I get this question asked all the time and that question is how
Starting point is 00:00:49 do I become successful, right? And just before we dive in, if you want to learn more about mindset lessons to help you master your mind so you can master the external world, hit that subscribe button that's down there in the corner. I put up new videos every Tuesday and Thursday. Now, we're talking about success. Success is a funny thing because success is different to everybody. And so if you want to learn how to be successful or get the steps to be successful, the first thing you need to do is you need to define success because what success is to me has changed a lot over the past few years, right? Success to me used to just mean monetary success, just money. As I've gotten older, success really means to me just being happy with myself every single day.
Starting point is 00:01:38 And who knows, in five years it might change again. And so it's extremely important to define what success is to you. So if you want to be successful, have you actually sat down with the pen and paper and asked yourself, what do I see as successful? If it's money, well, then you can put money down. If it's something else, put something else. But you need to define success. You'll never be successful, quote unquote successful, if you don't even know what success is to you in the first place. So once you figure out what success is, what you need to do is set a goal, right? Now that you know what success is, what is your goal to be successful? And you get extremely, extremely
Starting point is 00:02:18 clear on what that is, right? One of the biggest flaws that I see of people when they're setting goals is that their goals are very vague, someone would say in this year I want to make more money than I did last year well that's a great goal and all but if you make one dollar more this year you hit your goal but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be your goal is to make one dollar more right you need to know exactly how much money you want to make. Is it $100,000? Is it $200,000? What is it? You have to know the exact number. The more clear that you get on your goals, the more likely you are to get them because you can actually see them, right? Other people say
Starting point is 00:02:56 stuff like, I want to lose weight. Well, if you lose one pound, you lost weight. You hit your goal. That's probably not your goal. Your goal might be 20 pounds or 30 pounds. So if you're going to be successful, first off, define what success is to you because it's different for everybody. You can't just ask somebody who's successful, quote unquote, how to be successful because they might tell you how to be successful like they are, but then you might realize that that is not your term for success. That wouldn't be how you define success. So it's extremely important for you to number one, define what success is to you. Number two, to set a goal and get extremely, extremely clear on it. And then number three is to make a plan, right? Now that you know what success is to you, now you know the goal that you want to hit, the last thing and the last part of it is to make a plan to get
Starting point is 00:03:45 there, right? You need to make a plan. And part of this, now I know most people don't write down their goals in the first place and most people don't make a plan. And if they do make a plan, what happens is a lot of people forget the plan. The biggest key for being successful, if you have a plan, is to remind yourself of that plan every single day. So you define what success is, you make a goal, you make a plan, and then you remind yourself of exactly how to get there every single morning when you wake up and every single night before you go to bed. The more that you can remind yourself exactly how to get to where you're
Starting point is 00:04:25 trying to go, the more likely you are to get there. There was a Harvard study that was done back in the 1970s. And what they were doing is they were trying to figure out how many of their students had written down their goals or had goals in the first place. And what they found was that 97% of the students either did not set goals or they set goals but they didn't write them down. Only 3% of the students actually wrote their goals down on a piece of paper. And a few years later, 10 years later, they went back and followed up with all of the students after they did the study. And they found out that that 3% that wrote down their goals were more successful than the 97% combined. 3% of people were more successful than 97% of people.
Starting point is 00:05:11 So what does that show you? Well, if you want to be successful, you should follow in other successful people's footsteps. Maybe what that means is that I need to get a pen and paper. I need to define success. I need to set a goal. I need to make a plan. And then I need to remind myself of that plan every single day, every morning and every night. And then what you do, if you really want a big, big key to success and really helping yourself get there is to have a review session with yourself every single Sunday.
Starting point is 00:05:42 So every Sunday you sit down with yourself and you see how the last week went. You go over what went well, what went wrong, what you need to improve at, and then what you do is you look forward into the next week and you say, okay this is how last week went, how can I make this week better? And if you do this you will then improve all of your mistakes every single week and you'll be a completely different person by the end of this year than you are right now. Most people fail because they don't make a plan, and then the rest of the people fail because they don't follow the plan. So for you, if you want to be successful,
Starting point is 00:06:18 it comes down to getting a pen and paper, figuring out what you want, making a plan to get there, and then reminding yourself of it every single day. Because success is different for every single person. What success means to you might not be the same thing that it means to me. But that doesn't matter. Because what you want to be is to be your form of success, whatever success is to you. Maybe it's just happy. Maybe success to you is just being happy. And if that's the case, that's amazing. But then you ask yourself, how can I be happier? And how can I bring that into every single day? So in order for you to be successful, take it seriously. It's just like
Starting point is 00:06:56 budgeting your bank account. You get a pen and paper, you figure out exactly how to do it, and you do it exactly the way that you plan it to, it is that easy to become successful. If you follow these steps and you really follow up with yourself every single night and every single morning and then every single Sunday, you look back on how the last week went and you look forward to the next week, it's near impossible not to hit the goals that you set for yourself. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you become successful. If you like this episode, please do me a favor. Please share it with someone that you know and love.
