your brain now the reason what we're going to be talking about how to control
it is because most people don't even realize they can take control of it. Most people
don't ever try to take control of it. They just accept that it does whatever it does and that's it.
And it's crazy because if you really think about it, if you really think about this,
if you were just standing and out of nowhere your arm starts shaking, it starts going all over and
your hand's going crazy and it raises above your head and starts going nuts.
If your hand started going all crazy, you would look at it and be like, what the hell
is wrong with my hand?
Why is it going all crazy?
Why?
Because that hand is part of your body, and you are in control of your body and what happens
to it.
This hand freaking out would then cause you a minor freak out,. You'd be like, what the hell is going on?
Right?
You are in control of your hand because it is on your body.
If it went crazy, you would freak out.
Your brain is located in your body.
You are in control of what it does.
To not take control of it is just like if your hand started wiggling all over the place
and you didn't try to fix it.
It drives me crazy when people say, oh yeah, I don't meditate.
I've never tried it.
It's too hard for me because I can't slow my mind down.
Well, then you are not in control of your mind.
That should be the number one thing that you focus on right now.
If you're not in control of your mind, the number one thing you should focus on is your
mind and controlling it.
If you were driving a car and it started going out of control, nothing else in the world would matter except for you figuring out a way to control your car.
Your brain drives you in everything that you do.
It is the exact same thing.
Now, most of the time your brain, just so you know, is on autopilot.
Well, almost most of the time. Psychology Today
found out that 47% of the things that we do on a daily basis, almost half of the things that we do
on a daily basis, are actually not us doing it. It is our automatic brain. We're not consciously
thinking about it. We are just on autopilot as we are doing it. And so I'll give you an example. Sometimes you
can drive home and you get home and think, you know, how the hell did I just get home? I don't
even remember really driving. What happened was your automatic brain clicked on and said, okay,
don't worry, I'll take care of this. And the reason why is because your brain, although it
only weighs about 2% of your body weight, it consumes 20% of the energy that your
body uses on a daily basis. As far as one organ is concerned, it is the most
energy-consuming organ in your brain. The more that you have to consciously think
through something, the more energy that will be required. If you have to
consciously think through something,
you have to require, it requires a lot of energy. Sometimes, you know,
if you have a really hard day at work and maybe from 9 a.m. until 1 o'clock, you're in meetings, you're going, you're going, you're giving speeches, you're just literally using your
brain the entire time. By 1 o'clock, you feel like you're already done because you've used
so much brain power throughout the day. So what happens is your brain goes on autopilot. It tries to create patterns so that therefore it doesn't need to think, doesn't
need to use energy. This is a really good thing, but it's also a really bad thing. It's a good
thing because it conserves energy. It's a bad thing because you have unconsciously created patterns
that you do not want sometimes.
Sometimes you react to something and you think about it after and you're like,
man, I should not have reacted.
I should not have said that.
That was an automatic reaction that you have created.
The good thing is you can change and make new automatic reactions,
but you have to take control of your brain. The first thing I want to let you know is you can take control of your brain.
This is something that is 100% possible.
You have created patterns unconsciously.
Now let's fix those patterns that you don't like and let's create new ones consciously.
And so the first thing I would ask yourself is what patterns do I have, have I created,
whether that's I react to something in a certain way, I say something, I do something that
I don't like, these patterns and habits that I've created that I want to change. That's the first thing you need to figure
out. You can't change something if you don't identify it and find out what it is that you
want to change. And so that's the thing that you need to realize is that 47% of the time,
we are on autopilot. And so we need to figure out how we can get past this autopilot,
rewire some of the patterns that we have so that therefore we create new
habits that then are stored in the automatic brain and we automatically act that way.
I'll give you an example for myself. I know that when I was younger, when I was 21, I owned my
first business and it got to a multimillion dollar business by the age of 22 and that was stressful
as hell for a 22-year-old. It was was very successful but I had hundreds of employees that worked under me, I had assistants
that worked under me, I had receptionists that worked under me and sometimes things
would go wrong.
And when things would go wrong, I would get extremely stressed out and what would happen
is I would react in a way that I did not want to react.
And so what happened was I started realizing if I react in a certain way, I hurt people that are around me and say things that
I don't want to say. Maybe I should figure out a way to change that. And so what I started
noticing is that when I started feeling this pattern of stress, it was a physical feeling
I could feel come inside of my body. I would start to feel it and then try to catch myself
before I would react. I would feel the feeling and then and then try to catch myself before I would react.
I would feel the feeling and then I would try to catch myself before I would react in
a way that I didn't want to.
And I would try to change that pattern.
Now when something is very stressful to me, I actually am very calm and I sit and I think
about how to process it and how to get through it.
That took years to work through, but I worked through it because I wanted to not react to
stress the way that I was.
It's the same thing for you.
You can always do that.
The phrase that you need to know is this.
You cannot always control your first thought, but you can control your second thought.
You can't always control your first thought, but you can control your second thought.
The way you want to think of training your brain is the exact same way you want to think
of training a dog.
If you have a puppy and your puppy comes into the house and it poops on the floor, what
you're going to do is you're going to take the puppy, show it where it just pooped on
the floor, and take it outside.
And then it's going to do it again.
It's going to poop on the floor, you're going to take it, or it pees on the floor, wherever
it messes up, you put it so it smells it, and then you put it outside.
And you do it over, and you put it outside, and you put it outside, and you put it outside,
and you put it outside, and eventually the puppy goes, oh, this thing that
I'm smelling is not supposed to be here. It's supposed to be outside. And eventually that's
how you train a dog. It's the exact same way because their first thought is I'll just go
wherever I want to because they are animals and when they're outside, they can just go wherever
they want to. That doesn't work whenever you have a dog inside of your house. So its first thought is just to go inside. What happens though is it starts to
change its first thought. It starts to change its automatic brain. So your brain is the exact same
way. A thought might pop up or you might catch yourself doing something that you don't want to,
and that was your automatic pattern that you have created, not that's natural, that you have created,
right? If you're emotional or if you're stressed out, if you yell or whatever it is, that's not an automatic thing. That is
something that you have created by seeing your parents do it or because of the fact that you
realized when you were younger, when you were a kid, that got the reaction that you wanted or
you got what you wanted from your parents if you react that way. If you got really angry,
maybe you get really angry nowadays. If you get really angry, maybe you should think about when
I was a kid, did I get really angry with my parents?
If I got angry, did I get what I want?
Oh, crap.
Well, I developed a pattern that realized if I get angry, I get what I want from my parents.
And now I'm 30 years old, 32, 35 years old, however old you are.
That doesn't serve me anymore.
I need to get past that and figure out a way to reprogram your brain.
So you can't control your first thought because it's automatic right now, but you can always
control your second thought.
You can't control your first thought because it's automatic right now, but you can always control your second thought.
Your goal is to catch yourself in the middle of that first thought and change it to where
you want it to.
It's like the dog.
You start to notice the dog that looks like he's circling around, he's about to take a
poop on the floor, and before he does it, you take him and you put him outside and he
will learn quicker.
As you notice that you're about to go down this pattern that you don't want, you pick
yourself up, you put yourself outside, and you do what you want your brain to do.
You force it to be under your control because once again, if your hand was going all crazy,
you would take control of it.
Your brain is the exact same way.
It will learn.
If a dog is pooping inside and you want it to go outside, it will learn if
you just keep doing it over and over and over and over again. It might take
hundreds of times but eventually it's worth it because the rest of the time
that dog is alive you don't have to worry about pooping inside. It's the
exact same thing with your brain. It's gonna take time. It's gonna take hundreds
and hundreds and hundreds of time to get past this automatic thought pattern that
you have created. But you will be able to live the rest of
your life without that thought pattern, without process, that habit that you've created if you
work really hard at it right now. So control your brain because 47% of what you do is automatic
pilot. So that's what I got for you today. If you like this episode, please do me a favor,
