Today we're going to be talking about how to get rid of depression.
Before we dive into this, I do want to warn you.
There's two different things I think when I think of depression, okay?
The first thing, and really what this is, is this is a language problem.
We need extra words when we're talking about depression. So when we're talking about clinical depression, that is a chemical imbalance in your brain. Now, just so you know, 61% of people, this is an actual study that was found that 61% of
people that were diagnosed with depression were actually misdiagnosed and they weren't depressed.
So a lot of times you can go into a doctor and they can say,
yes, you're depressed, here's some pills.
But more often than not, they're actually wrong.
So we have depression on one side, which is a chemical imbalance of the brain.
On the other side, we have people that are categorized as depressed,
but really what
it is is more of a chronic sadness they are more sad they wake up each day and
things happen and they're sad and they've been sad for many days in a row
depression is a chemical imbalance it needs pills chronic sadness is what most
people think that you know most people that are depressed think that they are
depressed but they're actually just chronically sad. And that's what we're going to be talking about is
how to get past that chronic sadness, this depression that is out there. Now, if you do
feel like you're depressed, it is very, very important that you see a professional to see
if the professional thinks that you're depressed. But what we're going to talk about is how to get
rid of chronic sadness. So if you watch this and listen to this and you think to yourself, you know, maybe I should try some of these strategies and see if it helps
me. And if it does help you, then it's probably not depression. So it's probably just chronic
sadness. Now, when we look at the word depression, this is very important for us to look at. The word
depression comes from the root depress. To depress something is to push it down. So a lot of people
that have depression that's not a chemical imbalance of their brain are usually pushing
something down. And a lot of times, to be honest with you, it is emotions. So a lot of people are
depressing, pushing down their emotions, and that is why it starts to build up and build up and
build up until it gets to the point where it's like, this is too much. I can't handle this anymore. So if we're talking about that sort of depression,
where you're taking your emotions, you're bottling up, you're depressing them, and you're not saying
that to people, that's what we're going to talk about. That side of depression, that chemical,
the non-chemical imbalance, which is the chronic sadness. So there's four different things that
you want to think about if you think that you might be depressed Where this actually might help you so the first thing is your mind, okay?
The first thing is the emotions are you depressing pushing down?
Emotions that should come out now for me. I'll be completely honest with you
I grew up with an alcoholic father who ended up passing away when I was 15 years old from being an alcoholic I
Depressed my emotions when you're 15 years old from being an alcoholic. I depressed my emotions.
When you're 15 years old and you're in high school, you don't talk about your emotions when
you're a boy, right? That's just not acceptable in our society. It's ridiculous. It shouldn't be
unacceptable. It's something that we need to get past. But for me, I was terrible at showing my
emotions. So the first question I have for you is if you feel like you're depressed or chronically
sad, are you depressing your emotions? What emotions do you need to get out? So that's the
first question I have for you around your mind. Next thing I have for you is this, are you growing?
If you feel like you're depressed, you know, have you been stagnant for a long time? Have you been
stuck in the same place for a really long time? Because sometimes just the fact that you don't feel like you're growing, if you look at everything
outside, everything in nature expands, everything grows.
And if we don't feel like we're growing, you know, my old mentor, my very first mentor
used to say, you're either green and growing or brown and dying.
If we feel like we're brown and dying, we feel stagnant.
I always think the word
stagnant, I think of a stagnant lake. Just a stagnant lake would just be this lake that's
just covered in filth. It would have all kinds of mold on top of it. It would have mosquitoes.
That's what I think of myself sometimes when I think to myself, I'm stagnant. So have you been
stagnant? What is it that you want? Have you actually sat down with a pen and paper and asked yourself, what is it that I want? What is it that I want to improve
that? You know, if you're trying to grow your mind, things that would help with that. When was
the last time you read a really good book, sat down and tried to improve yourself? When was the
last time you listened to a really good podcast on improving yourself? When was the last time you
went onto YouTube and started looking at motivational or things that you're interested in things that that
lights you up from the inside things that you're interested in what was the
last time you went to a conference to learn more to grow to meet more people
that have the same interests as you so the first thing I ask you is if you feel
like there might be something wrong have have you been growing your mind? Have you been
growing your capacity to be the better person, to learn more, things that make you excited?
That's the first thing. You have to pay attention to your mind. The second thing that you want to
think about is your body, right? Are you getting healthy food inside of your body? Healthy food, not fried chicken,
not a bunch of hamburgers or anything like that. What type of food are you eating? Because the food
that you're eating is going to dictate how your body feels. So that's the first thing. Are you
eating healthy food, right? Fruits and vegetables instead of meats. Think about it. A fruit and a
vegetable is something that is still alive.
That puts energy into your body and makes you feel more alive. If you're eating a dead animal
and only dead animals or most of your meals are dead animals, that's something that is dead. It's
not going to make you feel alive, put more energy into your body. So that's the first thing to think
about when you're thinking about your body. Also, how often do you work out? And I realize when you're not in a happy state, the last thing you want to do is put on your gym
clothes and go to the gym. But if it's worth it to you, if your life is worth it to you and you
want to get better, get to the gym and force yourself to do something. Force yourself to move.
Movement of the body in and of itself releases emotions and physical things that we
need to get rid of, right? If you look at any animal, this is a crazy thing, right? If you look
at any animal that was just chased by a predator, maybe it got away. The first thing that it does
is once it's chased is it will shake. It'll actually shake off all of the internal things,
the built up fight and flight mechanisms inside of them. If you actually shake off all of the internal things, the built up fight and
flight mechanisms inside of them. If you're stressed out all of the time, when was the last
time your body moved and shook all of that stuff out? Because it emotionally stores inside of your
body. So when was the last thing you worked out? Moved, played a sport, did something that you like
to. Another thing you think about when you think about body is sleep. How is your sleep? This is something that most people don't really pay a whole lot of attention to.
Are you getting seven to eight hours of sleep inside of your room?
Is it completely black or is there light coming in?
Because the crazy thing about our body is our skin can actually see.
We have photoreceptors on our skin.
So if your eyes are covered, but your skin can still quote unquote, see light that's inside
of your room, you're not sleeping as well as you can. So if you're talking about your body,
what kind of food are you putting into your body? How much are you moving your body? And then what
is your sleep patterns look like? Super important. So first thing that we talked about was your mind.
Second thing we talked about is your body. Third thing we can talk about is your spirit.
You know, if you're a religious
person, when was the last time you went to church or temple or synagogue or any of those things?
If you're not religious, when was the last time you meditated? When was the last time you went
to yoga? Do you feel spiritually connected to anything? When was the last time you just went
out into nature and went for a walk? There's studies that show that just going out into nature
make people feel better. So we talked about mind, body, spirit
is super important. Do you feel like you're becoming the person that you want to be?
If you're sad, maybe you should ask yourself, what makes me happier? And make a list of all
of the things that make you happy. Put all of the things that make you happy on a sheet of paper.
And you know what could probably happen?
Is if you just look at them and start doing them, go down the list, you'll start to become happier.
Now, once again, I'm talking about for chronic sadness, which is also known as, and also misdiagnosis depression.
If you're clinically depressed and you have chemical imbalances, going out in nature might not make a difference. And so these are ways that you can try to use and move your body, your mind, your body, your spirit to start to figure out if maybe you're depressed and there's a chemical imbalance and you need drugs for it, or maybe
you're not. And you can actually start to make yourself happier by doing these things. So you
have your mind, you have your body, you have your spirit. And the fourth thing you need to think about is your environment around you.
Sometimes the people around you
are the thing that's making you depressed.
Do you have a lot of toxic people around you?
Do you have a lot of negative people around you?
When you want to become better, do they bring you down?
Do they talk down to you?
Do they constantly manipulate you?
If someone's not good for you, if they're toxic
or negative, it's okay to remove them from your life. I don't care if it's your best friend that
you've had since you were a little kid. I don't care if it's your family. I don't care if it's
one of your parents. It's okay because at one point in time, we all realize that we need to
only be around people that make us feel better, that support us, that help us.
So you have to realize maybe it's your environment that actually is bringing you down more than
anything else. Look at the people around you. What do the people around you make you feel like?
The next thing, what does your house look like? If you spend a lot of time in your house,
is your house really dark is it really messy?
Maybe you need to go and clean up see what it would make you feel like if your space because if you're if your space is cluttered
Your mind is cluttered and it's gonna make you feel worse. So what you should probably do
What does your environment look like as far as the house that's around you if you live with other people?
Do they take care of it? What does it smell like? The sight? Think about just your five senses. Just looking around. What you see
can offend you, defend the senses. What you smell can make you feel worse. What you hear the people
around you can make you feel worse. If you're constantly trying to fall asleep, like if we go
back to the sleep, if you're trying to go to sleep you constantly hear outside
Noises if you live in a downtown area and you always hear sirens and it's always waking you up think about your environment
And that way and the last one is your work. What is your work environment look like right?
Are you surrounded by people that constantly bring you down to work is your desk messy? Is there a bunch of crap everywhere?
You know there's a lot of crap everywhere? You know,
there's a lot of times where I used, when I used to have a job, I worked, I have worked at places where it is just a negative environment. You walk in and you feel how potent the negativity is,
and you don't want to be in that environment. So it's super important. If you feel like you
might be depressed, or if you feel like someone else that you love might be depressed, this is a really good exercise to go through to figure out.
Number one, once again,
I always recommend that you go and see somebody
and see an actual professional to see if you're depressed.
But if there's something inside of you that goes,
I don't think that I'm depressed,
but I think that there might be something else,
it could be, like I said, chronic sadness
because 61% of people are misdiagnosed
as depressed when they're actually not depressed. So if you're trying to get out of this rut that
you feel like you're stuck in, ask yourself this question, what's going on in my mind?
What's going on with my body? What's going on with my spirit? And what does my environment look like?
Mind, body, spirit, and environment. Think about those
four things and you might start to see if you make these little teeny tiny improvements, you might
wake up in a couple days and go, man, I feel better. I've been eating healthier. I went to the gym and
just got some sort of movement out. I read a book, even five pages of a book made me feel better.
And I went for a walk outside. A few of those can completely change your state.
If you've been in a depressive state for a long time, that's something that could help you.
And also, if you feel like you've been depressing your emotions, pushing them down,
talking to somebody can help you as well.
Talking to a friend, talking to a professional, even just writing it down in a journal
and feeling like you're physically getting it out of your body can help you in feeling better as well.
