Today, we're going to be talking about possibly one of the most important things in your life,
but also one of the most overlooked things that I found when I am coaching people. And that is this
energy, how much energy you have throughout the day and how you use that energy or don't use
your energy to your advantage. And it might possibly be the most important thing because
if you really think about it, if you want to do something special in your life, you're going to
have to have some energy to do it. If you have a lot of energy to do it, you simply have enough
energy to start, to complete,
and to completely finish the entire thing that you're working at. If you don't have enough energy
to do it, or you're not motivated and you don't feel that energetic push towards something,
you're less likely to start doing the things that need to be done. And you're also less likely to
finish what needs to be done. And so I'm going to talk to you about energy, the energy that you have
based off of your internal energy, your external energy,
your surroundings, everything that's around you. And then I'm also going to talk about how to plan
your energy throughout the day. This is something that I've never heard somebody else talk about.
It's just something that I realized for me, based off of how I feel at different times
throughout the day, I actually plan out what I'm going to do each day based off of how I feel.
And so you have to realize if you have energy, you can do what you want to do. If you don't have
energy, you can't do the things that you want to do. So there's certain aspects of your life that
I want to go through with you and consult with you on your energy. You ready? First thing,
obviously, if we're going to be talking about energy, the first thing that pops into everyone's
mind is what most of the time? Your sleep. Right. Of course, your sleep, which is part of your
energy, but it's not all of your energy. That's for sure. So how have you set up your sleep
environment to help you sleep better? Have you ever thought about that? How have you set up your
sleep environment to help you sleep better? And most people don't really put a whole lot of time
thinking about their sleep, thinking about winding down, thinking about everything they do before bed.
So like there's certain things to think about, you know, number one, obviously the mattress
makes sense. There's a lot of other things that people don't think about. If you drink before you
go to bed, if you have a glass of wine before you go to bed, I'm going to ruin some of you guys'
nights just so you know. Sorry, everybody. If you have a glass of wine before you go to bed, of course, it actually helps you fall asleep quicker, but you
actually get worse sleep because of the fact that alcohol actually changes your heart rate variability
to a negative, which also holds you back from getting the sleep that you truly need to.
So, I don't need to dive into that. If you want to research heart rate variability in sleep
and alcohol, there's a ton of research
that's out there.
Another thing you want to think about as well.
I used to take melatonin.
I have not, I will not take melatonin probably ever again, unless I absolutely have to fall
asleep for something.
I take CBDs before I go to sleep if I'm, if I'm not winding down, if my brain's not turning
off.
But the reason why is I follow a bunch of neurologists.
And one of the neurologists was talking about melatonin.
Melatonin is naturally produced in your brain,
which something that's naturally produced in your brain is called endogenous.
So melatonin is endogenous to your brain.
If you take something over and over and over again
that is endogenous to your body,
your body will stop making that thing,
which then makes it harder to do the thing
that that thing's made for.
So if you take melatonin on a regular basis, it actually holds you back from
falling asleep because your body stops making as much melatonin. Same reason why if somebody
decides to put chapstick on every single day, every single day, every single day, it will dry
out their lips. Why? Because your lips are so moist that it will actually stop creating the
moisture to come out of your lips.
Same thing with endogenous ingredients inside of your brain.
So that alone, some people are out there going, holy shit, I never even knew anything about
melatonin in doing that.
I never knew about the alcohol that I drink right before I go to bed to help me fall asleep
and to wind down, right?
So sleep is something that you should really pay attention to.
There's a bunch of really great books on sleep that you could if you really want to get better at
it. But if your energy isn't what you want it to be, the first thing I go back to is what is your
sleep like? What is your sleep environment like? Is your room trashed? You know, is it, how does
it look before you go to bed? Do you have nightly wind down rituals? Anything that winds you down
slows you or you, you know, fall asleep with the TV on, TV on. What is it that you do? How much darkness
is in your room? In case you didn't know, your skin has photoreceptors. Your skin has actually,
they're not actual eyeballs, but it's kind of the same thing where your skin, even if your eyes are
closed and you have some blindfold over your eyes, your skin knows if there's lights on in the room.
So your room is supposed to be pitch black. So sleep is a super important thing with your energy.
That alone, I probably could do an entire episode
just on sleep.
But if you don't have the energy that you want
throughout the day,
or you find that you're running out of energy quicker,
maybe sleep monitoring
and actually paying attention to your sleep
and reading a book
or listen to other podcast episodes on sleep,
you could definitely do that
and you'll learn a whole lot about it.
So sleep is the first thing I go to. Next thing I go to, and there's going to be a
lot of other things that you probably have never even thought about, is food. Now, most people
think, oh, well, I eat food for energy, right? Not necessarily because digestion is the number
one energy consuming thing that your body does. So if you're eating heavy, thick things throughout the day, it's going
to take your energy away because your body has to pull energy from your body to actually digest that
thing that you're eating. So for me, I have a really light breakfast and then usually I either
skip lunch or I have a super light lunch or I'll have a protein shake with a lot of calories in
that instead. And that's how I get it so that therefore I don't get energy pulled from me because energy for me is my most important thing throughout the
day. So a lot of times what I'll do is I'll eat, I'll have a shake, and then I won't eat again
until four or five o'clock. And the reason why is because for me, I can't get my energy stripped
away from me. I am so focused on what I want to do in the world that getting energy stripped from me
throughout the day is just not worth it.
And so I plan my day around what is going to take energy from me, what is going to give
energy to me.
So there's a lot.
The food that you're eating, does it give you energy or does it take your energy away?
And do you know what foods, greasy foods, fatty foods, really thick red meat maybe,
what actually makes you more tired? Do you have an
idea? Have you tracked that? Gluten. For me, gluten makes me super foggy. It's like literally
half drunk when I have gluten. And it's called brain, grain brain. It literally makes me feel
out of it. So I just don't have gluten. It's completely removed from my diet. So do you know
what slows you down and what speeds
you up? Just something to think about. Maybe if you eat something, you notice an hour and a half
later, oh God, I don't feel, I feel like I need a nap. Like I feel like at every, every day at 2.30,
I need a nap. Well, maybe you should start thinking about the food that you're eating for lunch.
I went years without ever even thinking about how the food I was eating was literally stealing my energy away from me because I always heard that food is fueled and nothing could be further from the truth
than that because food can actually take away a lot of your energy. So food's something to think
about. Now we're going to dive into things that you might not have ever thought about that steal
your energy or give you energy. Okay. First thing is your environment. How much have you actually looked
around and seen if your environment gives you energy or pulls energy from you? Right? So we
just moved from a condo that was in downtown Austin where we had no yard, nothing, and a much
smaller space to a house that's outside of town. We have over half an acre and I have noticed a massive shift
in my energy just from being in this house versus being inside of a condo. Now, some people love
being in the middle of downtown, right? I loved being there, but I didn't realize how it was
actually pulling energy from me. I like being in nature. Being in nature actually gives me more
energy. You might be that way or you might be the opposite of me.
So some people, nature and being around green grass and water and blue skies,
unless people gives them energy.
Some people being around other people in the middle of a city and sounds and movement and
energy that other people have give them energy.
It's all gravy, baby.
Whichever one gives you the energy is what matters.
But do you know what actually gives you energy? So think about your environment. Sometimes when you move
from one place to another, you can feel the shift in your energy and if the place actually gives you
energy or takes it away from you. So one thing I would ask you is your environment, the place that
you live, does it give you energy or does it take energy away from you? If it doesn't give you
energy, how can you figure out a way to either move or number two, make your place more energetic?
So maybe if you're like, man, I really do love nature. I've come to realize that. Like over the
past few years, I've really come to realize that I really love nature. I do. And so for me, if I
was in the middle of a downtown area and I was stuck there because my job was there, if I was
in New York City, I probably would try to figure out a way to get as many plants in that
apartment that I was in just to make me feel like I was more outside. So how is it for you?
Something to think about. So your house is the first thing. What about your car? What about
your bathroom? What about the room that you work in? Maybe you work from home right now. A lot of
people are working from home. What does your office area look like? Is it just thrown together and bootleg
looking? Or did you create a space that gives you energy when you sit down to work? Are you
looking outside and seeing trees? Are you looking outside and seeing the city? Or are you just
sitting on your couch with the TV on and your laptop's on your lap.
Hey, everybody, real quick, I've got to tell you about one of the favorite devices that I have in my house. It's called Theragun. It's a handheld percussive therapy device that releases all of
your deepest muscle tension, your knots, and it's scientifically calibrated combination of depth,
speed, and power gets your muscles loose where they're tight. And now it's as quiet as an
electric toothbrush. I have a funny story around it. I had a bunch of friends that were over at our new house today and we had everybody
trying it out and everyone was like, oh my God, I got to get this. How do I get this? Oh my God,
this feels amazing. It's like getting a massage. How do I get this? Everybody loved it. If you're
looking for some way to release your muscle tension and to get the knots out of your neck,
the knots out of your back, out of your legs, out of your thighs, to get rid of all of the
buildup every time that you work out and make yourself feel better,
I absolutely recommend Theragun. You can try it for 30 days and there's absolutely no substitute
for Theragun Generation 4 with the OLED screen and the personalized Theragun app. And it's as
quiet as possible and it has the power that you need. And it only starts at $199. And if you go
to theragun.com slash dial right now,
you can get your generation four Theragun today. That's theragun.com slash dial,
theragun.com slash D-I-A-L. Neither one is wrong. It's just whichever one is right or wrong for you.
So think about that. Does your environment, the place that you freaking sleep and hang out most
of the day sometimes, does it give you environment? Does it steal energy from you? Or does it give you
energy or does it steal energy from you? So many people don't realize that the place they actually
live and the way it's set up steals energy from them. Think about that. What is it for you?
What about your car? How does your car make you feel? Is your car freaking trashed?
Do you have last week's McDonald's in the back? Hopefully you're not eating McDonald's because
that's definitely stealing your energy. But do you have last week's food in the back and a bunch
of shit everywhere? Because if you do have a cluttered car and a cluttered house, it usually
creates a cluttered mind. So what if you were to completely clean it? The thing about a car too is cleaning it on the
inside, but also think about cleaning on the outside. One of my mentors completely changed
my mind with the car I was driving. And this is a crazy thing for me. I prided myself. I was like,
I will run. This was a few years ago. I was having a conversation with one of my mentors and
he's worth about $150 million. And he's like, yeah, I've realized. And actually,
this is after what I taught. Let me tell you what I told him first. And then I'll tell you what he
told me. I was like, he's like, yeah, well, what kind of car do you have? Because we were talking
about something. I remember it was like, oh, I drive a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe. And it was like
this mom. I had had it for like 10 years. And my goal was to, I took pride in the fact that I was
going to run that mofo down to the ground. I was going to put 300,000 like 10 years. And my goal was to, I took pride in the fact that I was going
to run that mofo down to the ground. I was going to put 300,000 miles on it and I didn't need a
new car. I didn't need anything to look nice. I didn't care about what people thought about me.
And he said something to me that really hit home and he was right. And he said, for me, I've
realized that when I have a nicer car and he doesn't drive like a Ferrari or anything like
that. He just has a nicer car. When I drive a nicer car, I feel better about myself and I show up
with more energy. I was like, oh my God, when I get in this 2700 Santa Fe, I fucking hate it.
I'm just trying to run it to the ground to prove a point or something. And so then I went and I
bought a brand new truck. And I was like, oh my God, I love this truck. This was a few years ago.
I was like, I love this truck.
And then a few months ago, two months ago,
I bought another brand new truck.
And it's the upgraded version of what I had.
I had the F-150.
Now I've got the F-150 Raptor
because I wanted to go off-roading
and be able to go up to Sedona and go off-roading,
which we did, and go to Colorado and go off-roading
and not have to worry about getting stuck
and go into the middle of nature because I know that nature gives me energy.
But I get so excited literally just to drive that truck. I never got excited to drive my
2007 Hyundai Santa Fe. So I'm not saying all of you have to go and buy a new car,
but even just making your car cleaner on the inside and the outside will make you feel better
and possibly give you more energy when you are driving that thing. So you have to think about it that way. Is your car giving you
energy or pulling energy from you? That was a game-changing conversation for me because then
I started thinking about my surroundings. Okay, if my car, if my truck can give me energy,
what else can give me energy? What else around me is stealing energy and I never actually thought
about it before? So then you go to another thing, social media. Nobody that I know of, I've never had a conversation
with anybody ever saying different than this, that social media gives them energy. I've always
heard that social media steals energy from people. Nobody gets on social media and then goes, oh God,
I feel so much better about myself now that I spent the past 45 minutes scrolling through people
talking about this guy, yelling with this guy and Democrats and Republicans yelling against each other and
people that are talking about the virus and not the virus and vaccine and not the vaccine.
People are just bickering and bickering, bickering, bickering. I'm so glad I spent 45 minutes
reading through all of that stuff. So how much time do you spend on social media? The average
person spends two to four hours a day on social media.
See how you feel after you get off of social media.
You don't feel like you have energy to go conquer the world.
It's usually like, oh my God, I'm like mentally tired
from all of that shit that I was just reading.
So social media for a lot of people that I've talked to actually steals their energy.
Okay.
Another thing.
What about
your morning routine? What do you do when you wake up in the morning? Does it give you energy
or does it take energy away from you? Do you wake up like right before you're supposed to leave for
work, take a shower, throw something in the microwave, you know, get the Keurig, make a
quick cup of coffee and you're out? Does that give you energy or does that feel draining to you?
What if you woke up and spent 30 minutes on yourself, an hour on yourself doing
things that you love, yoga, stretching, reading, journaling, whatever it is that make you feel
like you're growing. How can you bring more energy rich activities into your life and into your
morning routine to make you feel better? Okay, next thing. Here we go. You ready for this one?
This is going to hit home for a lot of people.
The people that you hang out with. Do the people that you hang out with, do they give you energy?
Do you feel amazing after you hang out with them? Or do you feel like you're freaking drained?
You know, I had an episode months ago that I did that was called, you know, batteries versus black
holes. You know, and there's literally some people that are like batteries. They give you energy.
You're around them. You're like, shit, I feel so good now. I'm so motivated. I want to go work on my business
I want to go work on my health and there's just something about the person's energy that you vibe with
And you're like that's what's up
I want to hang out that person more and then there's some people that you hang out with and you're like, uh, you're with them
20 minutes they leave your house. You're like god. I just need a freaking nap now. They suck the energy out of you
So who are you hanging out with? Are the
people that you're hanging out with giving you energy or are they stealing energy from you?
Are they taking it from you? Are people literally sucking away one of the most important aspects of
your day? And then what you do, if you really want, and I know like 5% of people are going to
listen to me and do this, but that 5% of you that do this, it's going to completely change your life.
The other 95% of you, it'll be a cool idea, but for the 5% that actually do it, it's going
to change your life.
For one week, I'm going to challenge you to do this.
And this is my assignment for you.
For one week, I want you to track how you feel from the moment you wake up to the moment
that you go to bed every single hour.
Have an alarm that goes off on your phone every single hour. And I want you to track from one to 10, how you feel
in that past hour that just went off. So let's say you wake up at six, from six to seven,
seven o'clock, your alarm goes off. Okay. How do I feel on a scale of one to 10? You track your
energy. Then you do the same thing from seven to eight, from eight to nine, to nine to 10, 11, on and on and on and on and on. And then what you do at the
end of the week, now that you've tracked your entire week, is you look at it and you start to
realize there's certain times of the day where you have more energy and there's certain times of day
where you don't have as much energy. And you can look at it and go, well, what it looks like at
this time, two o'clock every single day, I don't have a whole lot of energy. Okay, what did my lunch look like? How do I feel after I
eat these things? For me, I plan my day out. It's called, I called it energy planning. I plan my day
out based off of how I know I feel each and every day. And if you've been a longtime listener of the
podcast, you've heard me talk about this. I plan my day out based off of how I feel. When I wake up in
the morning, from the morning until 10 o'clock, I only focus on myself. Nothing else, not my
business, nothing. It's literally until 10 o'clock for me. And it might be different for you. That's
completely fine. Maybe you don't own your business. You don't do it until 10. Maybe you do it until
7. No worries. Whatever works for you, it's just important that you do it. So from the moment I wake up from four to 10, usually I work on myself. I get some silence,
I get some meditation, I get a workout, I do stretching, I do whatever it is I need to do
to work on myself. That is my me time. Three to four hours of me time. Why? Because I'm the most
important thing in my life. That's not a cocky or narcissistic thing to say because the better that
I show up, the better that I work on myself every single morning, the better I show up
every single morning with the people around me and every single day with the people around me,
and the better that I can impact their lives. The better that I am, the better they are. The better
they are, the better that I am. It's how the world works. So I should be focusing really hardcore
on myself first thing in the morning. From 10 o'clock until two o'clock, I do my most important tasks.
And the reason why is because for me, so like the morning time is my creative time.
I think about things. I think about podcasts. My brain's usually very philosophical and amazing
in the morning. And then from 10 o'clock to two o'clock, I turn on work brain and I just get
things done because I have the most energy from 10 o'clock to two o'clock. I don't know why.
It's just the way that my body works. So I plan the most important things so I could bring the most energy to the most
important things. From two o'clock to five o'clock, I just get other shit done. It's not my most
important things, but it's things that have to be done in my business. Maybe it's some phone calls
I got to get done with my team. Maybe it's phone calls I got to get done with someone else. Zoom
calls. It's certain things that you have to do when you have a team of 12 or 15 people. I've got people I've got to talk to.
So I don't usually have any conversations scheduled until after two o'clock, two to five,
six, whatever it is. That's my time to work with other people on my team, grow my team to grow the
people that are also there as well. Six o'clock on, I usually stop working and then I hang out
with my girlfriend. We do what we want then I hang out with my girlfriend. We do
what we want. We hang out with our dogs. We go do something outside in nature. We go get dinner,
whatever it is that we want to do. That's how I plan my day because that's how I feel throughout
the day. You might be different. I don't know. You might be exactly the same, but you won't know
until you track. So if you're really serious, I have an assignment for you.
And the assignment is I want you to track every single hour of the next week, starting
tomorrow.
From the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed, every single hour, right down
on a scale of one to 10 and start to notice.
There are certain times a day we have energy, there are certain times a day you don't.
There's certain things you eat that give you energy.
There's certain things you eat that steal energy from you. Certain people that you hang out
with. All of these things. Because what you start to do is you start to release the things and stop
doing the things and stop hanging out with the people who are stealing the energy from you.
And you start doing only the energy rich tasks. Eating the energy rich foods. Hanging out with
the energy rich people. And you become more energetic to work towards the life that you want.
become more energetic to work towards the life that you want. So take it seriously.
If you want to have success and happiness and joy and a million dollars in your bank account or cars and clothes or just whatever it is that makes you happy and success or just the freedom
to hang out with your children whenever you want to and travel with them to do the world
throughout the entire world, then you have to realize energy is a very important part of it.
You won't create the life that you want without the energy needed to create that life. So track
it for the next week. You can do anything for a week. Give it a shot. See how it works with you.
Send me an email. Let me know how it goes. So that's what I got for you for today's episode.
