It helps us more than you could possibly imagine. Today, we're going to be talking about the five
pieces that make up how to have the mindset of a winner. And I'm going to talk about two of the
greatest athletes of all time. We're going to talk about Michael Jordan. We're going to talk
about Tom Brady and what made them different than other people. This doesn't have to be just athletes.
This translates into high performers. But what I like to do is I like to look at people who are
completely outside of what's normal. When you look at Michael Jordan and a typical basketball player,
completely outside of what's normal. When you look at Tom Brady and all football players,
completely outside of what's normal. And so I did a lot of research
on both of them for this episode because I really wanted to figure out what's going on inside of
their mindset. What's going, what are they thinking about? What are they doing? What sets them apart
from everybody else so that therefore they can be, you know, given the title of GOAT, which stands
for the greatest of all time. And so we're going to go through the five differences. I'm going to
teach you exactly how those things work, okay?
Here's one thing I want to say though
before I go into these five things.
One thing that I have found with people
is that winners win, losers lose.
This is not something that you're born with,
which is important.
This is a mindset and a mindset can be shifted.
And it's really about the way that you look at things.
Winners win,
losers lose. If somebody just has this mindset of I'm going to win no matter what, eventually,
they're going to win. It's an important thing to understand. You know, it's like, I think it was Vince Lombardi said, I never, what was he said? I never lost a game. I simply ran out of time.
Right? So it's like, you have to have that mindset of I'm going to win no matter what.
So winners win, losers lose. How can you have the mindset of I'm going to win no matter what
in everything you do? Okay. So number one, first thing that makes the mindset of these people
so different from everybody else is they are obsessed. You know, I used to listen to Jim
Rohn a lot when I was younger and Jim Rohn calls it a magnificent obsession.
A magnificent obsession. Like, how can I be so obsessed with this thing? And so one of the things that's important is that I think a lot of people are not obsessed with what it is that they're
doing. It's like they're following this path because it's going to make them money, or they're
following this path because they think this is what they're supposed to do. With someone like Michael Jordan, someone like Tom Brady, it was an obsession for them.
And Michael Jordan's quoted saying, I never wanted to say I wish I could have done more.
And their whole life is dedicated to how can I become better? When you look at Tom Brady,
and you look at his entire life was built around how to become a better football player, his diet, his workouts.
And they said that throughout the season
and throughout the off season as well,
he would spend 12 hours a day
on either playing football or his body, 12 hours a day.
When you're 44 years old and you're playing football
and you get hit by 300 pound men,
you've got to focus on your body.
But it's 12 hours a day of how can he become better?
That is an obsession,
right? And so you don't want to have the idea of like, I wish I could have done more.
He said, I wish I would have, I never wanted to say in my entire life, I wish I could have done more. And so what can you do to find something that you can be absolutely obsessed with?
You know, like if you want to be a guitar player and you want to be a professional guitar player,
you need to be fucking obsessed with playing guitar.
I have a friend of mine who is one of the best guitar players
that I've ever seen.
And he is obsessed with playing guitar.
And when you see some of the best guitar players
that ever lived and you hear about them,
like I remember reading about Stevie Ray Vaughan
and they said that he was always playing guitar.
And he would like to the point And he would, like to the point
where he would take it to the bathroom with him.
Like he was so obsessed with this thing.
Can you find something that you could be that obsessed with?
You know, you don't have to take it
to the bathroom with you,
but can you find something that is your magnificent obsession
as Jim Rohn says, okay?
Number two is that winners don't see any other option, right?
Winners don't see any other option. It's just something that winners don't see any other option, right? Winners don't see any other option.
It's just something that winners,
they go in with,
I'm going to leave everything on the court,
whatever that is, whether it's a court,
whether it's a field,
whether it's your workplace every single day.
How can you go in with the mindset of,
I'm going to win
and leave every single thing on the court?
And this is something that I think is super
important is to go in there with the mindset and think, I'm going to make it. I'm going to make it.
I'm going to make it. I'm going to make it. I remember when I was a kid, I used to play
basketball. I was obsessed with basketball. I used to play basketball with the idea of,
I hope I don't miss. I was kind of a pessimistic child, which most people wouldn't understand
with me because
they think, oh man, he must've been optimistic all the time. No, I literally played basketball,
loving it, but hoping that I wouldn't miss. And so as a winner, you've got to see it as I'm going
to win. I'm going to win. I'm not going to miss. I'm going to make it. I'm going to make it. How
can you go into every single day with that sort of mindset of I'm going to succeed at this,
this business that I'm building, I'm going to succeed. This video that I'm making is going to be the best video that I
could possibly make with all of my skillset. The song that I'm going to write is going to be one
of the best songs I've ever written. And just go into it with, I hope I don't mess it up. Don't go
with that attitude. Go into it with, I'm going to make this the best thing I possibly can. Winners
don't see any other option but winning. How can you bring that into every single thing that you do? Number three, they
understand that messing up is literally just part of the process. They know. And their mindset never
wavers depending on the mess ups. Like, you know, they might go into a practice and they might have
a crappy day. Tom Brady might have a day where he just throws more interceptions
than he normally does.
He's not going to go,
oh man, maybe I am getting too old
or maybe this isn't for me
or maybe I'm not supposed to be doing this.
Maybe I should pick up volleyball
or something like that.
Their mindset never wavers.
They understand that you're going to have good days.
You're going to have bad days.
Your mindset cannot waver.
That's the biggest difference
is a lot of people that I see
when you go into starting a new business and you have one bad month, they think, oh, maybe this
isn't for me. Maybe I should go back to work it for somebody else. No, your mindset has to be,
I'm going to win at this. I'm going to screw a lot of stuff up and eventually I'm going to figure it
out. You know, for me, I train a lot of people who are coaches. Like one of my parts of my business is training coaches
on how to grow coaching businesses.
And one of the phrases I say to them all the time
is fuck it up and figure it out.
Like that's completely fine.
Like just understand that messing up is part of the process.
Messing up is part of the process.
I'm in the middle of getting certified
as to fly a plane, right?
And literally before my flight instructor knew what I did,
he's like, hey man, we're going to do takeoff and landings. I fully intend that you're going
to mess up a lot of times, but that's just what you have to do in order to get better.
I'm like, I know. That's what I train people and tell them all the time. You got to fuck it up and
figure it out. You've got to have, and he even says it, you've got to have some bad landings
so that you know what not to do the next time that you go around. And it's a feeling thing. It's not just like, oh, this is mechanical. It's feeling. Things have to
move and shift. And it's like, once you know what it feels like to mess up and you know how you
messed up, it makes it easier to avoid that the next time. They can miss the game-winning shot
over and over and over again, but they still want to take the game-winning shot the next night.
One of the famous quotes
that Michael Jordan says is he says,
I missed more than 9,000 shots in my career.
I've lost 300 games.
26 times I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot
and I missed.
I failed over and over and over again in my life.
And that is why I succeed.
And it's just, you know, the guy who started Honda,
Honda Motors, he literally says, one of his famous quotes is success is 99 I succeed. And it's just, you know, the guy who started Honda, Honda Motors, he literally says,
one of his famous quotes is,
success is 99% failure.
You just have to succeed 1% of the time.
They know that they won't be perfect.
They know that they're going to mess up,
but that won't change their mindset on anything.

So what can you think about that?
How can you do that?
How can you take that piece into whatever it is that they do?
Whatever it is that you do, excuse me.
Number four, they also surround themselves with winners, right?
They surround themselves with other people who are winners. And they They surround themselves with other people who are winners.
And they stop surrounding themselves
with other people who are not.
I remember a story about this is Kobe Bryant,
when he first came into the league,
he had what he called something called Goat Mountain.
And Goat Mountain was all of the best,
the greatest of all time in basketball.
So it was like Michael Jordan, it was Magic Johnson,
it was Hakeem Olajuwon,
and it was this list of some of the best players that had ever played. And what happened was a lot
of Kobe Bryant's friends, when they were friends in high school, he didn't hang out with them as
much anymore. And he really started to hang out with people who were older than him, who were
some of the best basketball players that have ever existed. And he started surrounding himself
with the people who he thought were on Goat Mountain.
And what he said is he said,
I knew that that would offend some of my friends,
but my true friends, the people who really love me,
would understand that in order for me
to be one of the best that ever did it,
I would have to surround myself
with some of the best that ever did it.
So you've got to think about that.
Who are the people that are around you
and what type of atmosphere are they creating for you?
Are they creating an atmosphere
for you to be a winner as well?
Are they pushing you to be better?
Are they motivating you to be the best version of yourself?
Are they challenging you
and calling you out on your bullshit sometimes
when you say, oh yeah, today I didn't work out
as hard as I wanted to
because I was just so tired from X, Y, Z.
And they're like, hey man, you've done that three times this week.
You need someone that's not going to just allow you to slip.
You need someone to push yourself harder.
So they surrounded themselves with other people who were winners.
So Kobe Bryant says Michael Jordan was basically like his older brother.
And sometimes he would call him at three o'clock in the morning. and he would say, hey man, I've got a question about this
turnaround, you know, this fadeaway jumper. What did you do here? How do you do this? How do you
get the defense off you when you're on your back? You know, and he actually started talking to him
all of the time. He knew that in order to become one of the greatest, you have to surround yourself
with the greatest as well. So that's number four. And number five, these people have hardcore discipline.
Hardcore discipline.
So here's the trick.
I've never heard people that were just like,
yeah, I just ended up becoming
one of the best there ever was.
And so if you want to have the mindset of the winner,
you have to understand that it's all about the process.
It's all about the process of doing what needs to be done.
Have you ever heard of the phrase,
it's all about the process and not the destination? It's all about the journey. Let me explain.
Dopamine is a chemical that's inside of your brain that makes you feel good. And dopamine is also
called the chemical of motivation. And so most people, they want to become a millionaire, for
instance. That's the goal they want to achieve, or they want to achieve winning a championship or whatever it might be. And what happens is they think to themselves,
and I hear people say this all the time, if I get, you know, I don't ever want to be satisfied
because if I'm satisfied, then I'm not going to work as hard. One of the worst ideas that you
could possibly have. Here's the reason why, because then you're holding dopamine. You're
literally holding out the dopamine, which is the chemical of motivation, which is released, which makes you feel good.
You're holding out dopamine until you become a millionaire. You're holding out the dopamine
until you win the championship. That's going to make it really hard to get motivated.
And so some of the best people actually, they don't know that they do this. They're setting
up dopamine reward systems around the process.
So for instance, Michael Jordan is famous for showing up two hours before everybody during practice and leaving two hours later than everybody else. And so his dopamine, I don't
think that he did this on purpose, but his dopamine reward system that he created for himself
was probably not a dopamine reward system that was built around winning the championship,
even though that was the ultimate goal. His dopamine reward system that was built around winning the championship, even though that was the ultimate goal.
His dopamine reward system was built around,
I'm going to show up and be there before anybody else.
I'm going to put in more work before anybody else.
And when he would wake up at four o'clock in the morning
and five o'clock in the morning,
he probably got dopamine from the fact of,
you know what?
I know there's nobody else working right now.
I know there's nobody at the gym right now.
I know there's nobody else that's now. I know there's nobody at the gym right now. I know there's nobody else that's working
as hard as I am right now.
And so instead of attaching his dopamine
to the achievement of the goal,
like winning a championship,
his dopamine was attached to knowing
that he was the only person that was showing up
at four o'clock in the morning
or two hours before practice
or staying two hours after practice.
What did that make him do?
Made him want to do it again the next day.
Your brain is comprised of chemicals.
And if you can just attach,
okay, I know that my brain is all chemicals
and I'm kind of like a drug addict.
You know, that's kind of how everyone's brain is.
You get attached to certain chemicals.
You get attached.
That's why misery loves company.
Some people get attached and addicted
towards feeling miserable and feeling terrible
and feeling stressed.
How can you make yourself become attached
to the feeling of falling in love with the process
and knowing, hey, there's no one else right now
that's making phone calls.
There's no one else that's up this early
building their business.
I'm the only one doing this.
And celebrating yourself for showing up
and actually doing it.
And having dopamine rewards,
not towards winning the championship and achieving whatever the goal is, but have dopamine reward
systems around the actual actions that needed to be taken to get there. So if you want to be
a millionaire, for instance, you're like, you know what? I won't be happy with myself until
I'm a millionaire. People think that all the time.
Instead of that, what is the processes?
What are the actions that you need to take
in order to become a millionaire,
in order to build that business to be a millionaire,
in order to get to wherever it is you're trying to get to?
Find out what it is.
Oh, you know what you need to do?
I need to wake up at four o'clock in the morning
and start building emails to find more prospects
for my brand new business.
Okay, perfect.
Well, then wake up at four o'clock in the morning,
get yourself some coffee and start to work towards it.
And then be proud of yourself for putting in the work,
knowing that no one else is up at this time.
And if you do this every single morning,
you're going to start to fall in love with the process
of the actions that need to be taken
in order to grow your business
to whatever it is that you need it to.
If you want to become a professional athlete,
instead of attaching your dopamine reward system
with getting into the NBA or getting into the NFL,
attach it to the process of the actions
that need to be taken to be one of the best
football players ever,
to be one of the best basketball players ever.
This is something that is super important.
It's a way for you to trick your mind
and trick your body into actually doing
what needs to be done.
Do not say to yourself, I'll be happy when I get there.
Figure out a way to be happy now.
And when you're happy now with the process,
you will eventually get there.
So those are the five mindset techniques that some of the
most successful winners in the world have. Number one, they are absolutely obsessed with what they
do. Number two, they don't see anything other than winning as an option. Number three, they
understand they're going to fail. They understand they're going to miss shots. They understand
that messing up is just a part of the process. Number four, they surround themselves with other
winners. And number five, and they have hardcore self-discipline
about doing what needs to be done
in order to get themselves to where they want to go.
So that's what I got for you for today's episode.
