to receive motivational and inspirational text messages from me, text me right now, 512-580-9305. Once again, 512-580-9305. Today, we're going to be talking about how to live
a purpose-filled life. And this is important because one of the things, maybe one of the
most common questions that I get asked is, how do I get motivated? How do I motivate myself to do more,
to be more, to create a life that's filled with purpose? And we're going to dive into that today.
And we're going to talk about how to actually worry about the purpose that you're putting
behind stuff so that you can become motivated. Because becoming motivated is hard when you're
doing something that is for yourself and yourself alone, and you're thinking
about yourself. And I'll be honest, I think that most people start their life and their career and
what it is that they're doing by thinking about themselves. And there's nothing wrong with that
in the beginning, but eventually what they find out is that their motivation will start to die
when they're constantly thinking just about themselves. And it can be fun in the beginning,
it can be motivating at first, but it can start to feel really hollow after a while if you're just constantly thinking
about yourself and what do I get out of it and what do I give out of it. And if you want to have,
in my opinion, if you want to have massive levels of success or happiness or joy or love in your
life, you've got to stop thinking about yourself and you've got to actually start to think about
other people. I mean, it's really common too. If you think about one of your biggest
successes in life, whenever you have success, whenever you do something that's amazing,
you make a big accomplishment. What is the first thing that you want to do? You want to tell
somebody else. You want to have somebody else to talk to and celebrate because success is only more fun and more rewarding when you have other people to
share that with. And it's also more fun to take actions for people versus taking actions for
self. And what I'm going to teach you today is something that one of my very first mentors taught
me when I was younger and it absolutely changed my life. And it changed my life because at the time,
I was about to go out and open my very first
office with this company. And I had hundreds of sales reps that I would eventually be training
inside of this office that I started. And he was talking about the concept of being on self
versus being on purpose. And that's what we're going to dive in today is how to be on purpose
and not on self. And so in every action that we take, we can ask ourself, am I on self or am I on purpose? And we'll dive into what the two of those are. So let me explain.
On self means that the actions that you're taking are for yourself. You're doing it for you and you
only. Maybe you think, oh, it'd be nice to change the world, but I also really want to get rich,
or it'd be nice to help other people, but really I want to become famous or I want to get my TikTok videos to go viral, whatever it is.
Or you just want to make money for yourself. And you can also take actions for yourself,
but you can also not take actions because you're too worried about yourself.
So there's two sides of it. It's number one is taking actions for yourself,
wanting to make money for yourself, wanting to have success for yourself, wanting to be famous for yourself, or not taking the
actions that you want to simply because you're too busy worried about yourself.
And let me explain what I mean by that one. If you know what I do, I teach coaches how to grow
coaching businesses. So one of the businesses that I have is we literally teach hundreds of coaches
how to grow coaching businesses through social media. And so they can get clients from social media. But sometimes
people have trouble posting on social media. And why do they have trouble with posting on social
media? Because they're too worried about themselves. And let me explain what I mean by that.
It's not because Instagram is down. They don't have trouble posting on Instagram because Instagram
is down. They have trouble because they're worried about how they will look to other people, how they will be perceived by the other people who are
watching their video or looking at their quotes or seeing their pictures. And so what's happening
is instead of focusing on the content they're creating and creating content for helping other
people, what they're worried about is how will I be perceived by other people?
And it's, you know, they'll think like, oh man, Mike, I didn't record a video today because my lighting isn't good enough.
Or, you know, I need to fix my makeup.
Or, you know, I'm just really tired today.
Or I need to go read another book about this subject so that I can make sure I seem, you
know, knowledgeable and I don't make a fool of myself.
I don't have enough knowledge in
this. Or what if, oh my God, what if I post this video and I get some hater? And what if I post
this quote and then my friends start making fun of it? And when you think about that, that is being
on self. I'm worried about what other people will think of me. And this happens all
the time outside of just people that I coach, but that are coaches, but it happens for people all
the time of like, well, I don't want to quit my job as an engineer and start my jewelry company
because my parents are going to be pissed because I went to college and spent a bunch of money
becoming an engineer. So now I have to do
this rest of my life. And I don't know what it would be like. I don't want to tell my parents
that I want to drop out and start, you know, become a social worker and go to school to be
a social worker because they expect me to be a doctor. And so instead of actually pursuing
their passion, which has purpose behind it, they stay in doing whatever it is that they think
they're supposed to be doing or whatever it is that will have people perceive them in the light that they
want to be perceived. That is the example of being on self. And so many people don't follow
their dreams simply because they're worried about how other people are going to perceive them.
Does that hit home with you? Are you one of those people? Are you too worried about what other people think of you?
Are you constantly thinking
about other people's perception of you?
And so you're not doing what you want to do
because you're constantly thinking,
well, what if I get a hater?
Or what will my mom say?
Or what will society say?
What will my friends say?
I can't go and start a podcast
because what would it look like for me
to start a motivational podcast or a health podcast
when all of my friends from college
used to see me get blackout drunk all of the time?
Once again, that is thinking from the perception
of being on self.
What are people going to think of me?
My biggest worry is what people are going to think of me.
That is on self.
It is worried about how I am viewed
and so many people don't take action
towards what it is they want
simply because they're afraid
of what other people will think about them
that is being on self.
And so many people are not succeeding
with the life they want.
They're not following their purpose.
They're not impacting the world
that they truly could
because they're simply just too worried about themselves,
what they will get out of it,
or what people will think about them. And I think that's the natural way that people start out. And some people never get past
that. They never get what they want in life. They never have their dreams. They never follow it.
But some people, I think that's natural in the beginning to think about yourself.
The next evolution of taking action is for the sake of other people. For the sake of,
I want to help the world. And so I'm going to do
this no matter how I am perceived. And if you look at every person that you really respect,
whether it's someone that you're close to, or whether it's someone that's massively famous,
or someone who's dead, but they were just an amazing person, they did something.
Usually, what they did is at some point in time, they realized that they have to stop listening to
the people around them. They have to stop worrying about other people's perceptions and other
people's opinions. And they need to just follow what it is that they feel like they're supposed
to do because they feel like it's right for themselves and they feel like it's right for
humankind. And so the next evolution is taking action for the sake of other people. People think

So if we go back to that simple example that I just gave you of being worried about posting something on social media, a video on social media, let's say that maybe you want to post
a video about anxiety and you feel like you're not qualified to talk about anxiety. Even though
you've overcome your own anxiety, maybe you feel like you're not qualified because you're not a doctor.
And so you're thinking to yourself,
oh, I don't want to be perceived as an idiot.
I don't want people to make fun of me.
I don't want people to say I'm not a doctor.
I don't want people to have their perception change for me
because they find out I have anxiety.
That is thinking about on self.
What would be the opposite of that on purpose
would be, hey, listen, on purpose,
I'm going to talk about and post a real and raw
video about my anxiety, the things that I've gone through and the ways that I've overcome it,
simply because I know that there could be somebody out there that is dealing with anxiety,
and this video could help them. That goes back to, I don't care what other people think about me.
I care about the one person that's out there, the two people that are out there
that might be dealing with the same thing
and how my video can help them.
See, now that switches from on self to on purpose.
Another example is like,
I'm going to talk about my addiction
and how I'm three years sober
because there might be somebody out there
that could see this video or this post
or this blog post about my addiction
that might be
completely addicted to something right now. And that video or blog post or picture or quote about
addiction might wake them up and help them in some sort of way. I don't care about how I'm
perceived about people who maybe not even knew about my addiction. What I care about is that
one person who I am going to help. That is on purpose, right? I'm going to talk about my addiction. What I care about is that one person who I am going to help. That is on purpose,
right? I'm going to talk about my eating disorder that I've been dealing with since I was 17 years
old and in high school and how I overcame it knowing that there's someone else out there that
might see this video. And if they see this video, this video could completely change their life
and maybe help them out in some sort of way. Do you see how posting, we're just
going to very simple example of posting something on Instagram can be seen as, oh my God, I don't
want to be judged. I want people to change their perceptions of me. I don't want people to think
differently of me. And we can think that way, which is on self, or we can think I'm going to
post this no matter what, because I want to help somebody else out. And I've been given my
struggles and my difficulties and my mess is my message. And I'm going to post my mess because I know there's someone out there
that needs to see it as well. That right there is on purpose. And so on purpose is the act of
doing something for just the sake of helping others. And when you're doing something for the
sake of helping others, you have so much more energy because it's just
so interesting. One of the things that will bring you the most energy in life is helping somebody
else out. When you do something for someone else, it's the reason why I literally end the episode
every single time I do an episode of Make It Your Mission, Make Someone Else's Day Better,
is because I know if you go out there and do something to make somebody else's day better,
it will give you more energy for life.
And so when you have the energy of, I'm going to live my life on purpose, I'm going to live my life
on purpose, I'm going to live my life on purpose and do things, as many things as I possibly can
to help other people, you'll realize that you're so much more motivated and driven towards a life
that you want to create. Now, here's the important part. I am not saying make yourself a martyr,
here's the important part. I am not saying make yourself a martyr, right? So some people will make themselves into a martyr and they will do every action for the sake of other people,
or they're telling themselves it's for the sake of other people, and they won't take care of
themselves. They'll forget to take care of themselves. The thing that I'll tell you about
is this. You cannot pour from an empty cup. And so if you're not taking care of yourself first
before going and living your purpose
and living a life on purpose,
you're going to be pouring from an empty cup
and eventually you're going to burn out.
And so I'm not saying be a martyr.
I'm not saying do every single action
from the place of helping other people.
What I'm saying is help yourself first.
And then when you go out into the real world,
make as many actions as you possibly can
towards the action of helping other people.
Because when you do that, you real world, make as many actions as you possibly can towards the action of helping other people. Because when you do that,
you'll have so much more motivation to create whatever it is in this world
that you want to create.
And it will become much more effortless
to find drive, to find energy,
to find will and perseverance
towards whatever it is you're trying to do
when you're thinking through the lens
of how can I go out and help people today?
I don't know what I'm doing today.
I know I've got my schedule in front of me, but how can I make sure I help people today? I don't know what I'm doing today. I know I've got my schedule in front of me,
but how can I make sure I help as many people as possible?
And how can you make being on purpose
and heading into the direction of helping other people
your North Star in life, your guiding light?
How can you make your guiding light and your North Star
wanting to help other people,
wanting to do what you need to do to help other people?
I'm, you know, I'm going to turn down my selfish thoughts so that I can help other people. I'm going to turn
down my ego and what my ego wants me to do so that I can help other people. I'm going to turn down my
judgments of myself and what other people might judge me on. I'm going to turn all of those things
on off just simply so I can go out and go towards
the position of wanting to help as many people as possible. And if you really think about this,
if more people in the world live this way, can we all agree that the world would be a much better
place if more people woke up and said, you know what? Tomorrow, I'm going to go out and I'm going
to try to help as many people as possible. I'm going to go to and I'm going to try to help as many people as possible.
I'm going to go to work. And on my way to work, even if you just work for someone else,
you don't have to be posting on Instagram. You don't have to be doing any of these things.
But if you just go in with the idea of, I'm going to try to take every action that I can today,
it won't be all of them, towards the position of helping as many people as possible. And I'm going
to let that be my guiding light to take me into the direction that I want to go.
That right there is going to make the world better if every single person listened to this right now
and decided that that is how they're going to live their life.
They're going to stop living their life on self,
worried about themselves, being selfish,
thinking about how much money they can make,
thinking about how, you know,
what they're going to get out of every situation.
Just say, hey, I'm going to put my ego aside.
I'm going to put my insecurities aside.
I'm going to put anything aside that's holding me back
from creating the life that I want to
and helping other people get something amazing in life
as I'm going through it.
It doesn't make anything wrong with you.
If you want to go out there and say,
hey, it doesn't matter what people think of me.
It doesn't matter what other people's opinions are of me.
I feel guided towards X, Y, Z, whatever that is.
And I know that if I follow my purpose in that
and I try to help other people while doing it,
it'll be great.
This is why some of the biggest companies now
that have been growing recently
have been companies like Tom's Shoes, right?
Where you buy a pair of shoes
and they give a pair of shoes for free.
So many companies now have some sort of purpose of,
hey, we're not just about profit.
We're also about when you purchase from us,
we're going to see how we can help other people
in that purchase.
So that it's not just,
hey, I'm going to try to make money
and build a massive company.
It's like, hey, how can I make sure that my company,
no matter what it is that you do,
you don't have to be a coach
or you don't have to be putting up stuff on Instagram.
You could be selling widgets,
but how could your selling widgets
benefit the world in some sort of way?
And if you have some sort of way that you can do that,
your company will grow massively.
I have a friend that's going to be on the podcast
not too long named Josh Bozzone.
And Josh just sold his company.
It was a massive company they built.
And the company, whenever you would check out
on his company, it was a company called Biotrust. B the company, whenever you would check out on his company,
it was a company called Biotrust.
Biotrust, whenever you would buy their protein,
whenever you would buy whatever their supplements were,
there was always an option to like every part of their proceeds
always went to Make-A-Wish Foundation.
And then at the end, when you were checking out,
you had the option to donate to Make-A-Wish.
And so it made it easier for him to be motivated in growing that business, which they grew to over $100 million their very first year.
It made it easier for him to grow that business because he was motivated towards,
how can I make sure that more revenue comes into my company? Knowing that, of course,
he'll benefit from it. His business partner will benefit from it. But at the same time,
who will benefit from it? The Make-A-Wish Foundation, all of those children as well.
And so they built that into their company
in what they were doing.
Because if you look at it from the surface,
yeah, they were selling protein.
Yeah, they were selling supplements,
all of that stuff.
But at the same time,
they were making sure that their company
was on purpose in some sort of way
and making sure that the earth
and the humans on the earth
benefited in some sort of way as well.
So if I can give you one tip,
start to live through the lens
of how can I live my life
on purpose and stop being worried about being on self. So that's what I got for you for today's
episode. If you love this episode, please share it on your Instagram stories right now and tag
