Today, we're going to be talking about money.
Everybody loves money.
And this past weekend, actually, excuse me, two weekends ago now, I went to an event where
there were six different millionaires who were talking and they were talking about mentors,
they were talking about how they grew up, they were talking about their success. And something that was said that
connects with me, it's something that I've heard many, many times, but it never really clicked.
I mean, it clicked with me, but not the way that it did this past weekend.
And the way it was said to me, it was from a millionaire who's had millions, lost millions,
had millions again, lost millions again, and now he's a millionaire
again. And what he said is that you don't want to focus on money. Live your life focusing on
providing value to people. And money will be your byproduct of value. If you add tons of value out into the world,
there's no way that you can't make money back. So let me explain this.
This is why our society and everything that we do is so mixed up and so incorrect.
Most people go into the workforce and they go into the world focusing on how much money they can make. They focus on going to school for what
will pay the most. They read about stuff that they really don't care about so that they can make more
money. And then when they get out of school, they take a job that pays $5,000 more than the other
one, but was longer work hours, but they don't enjoy it as much just because of the fact that it paid more, or they leave their current job in search of more money. It's all around money. That is the wrong
process. If you listen to anybody who is successful, anybody who has gone through the
process, what they say is they never focused on money. What they focused on was providing value.
So if you're in search of money, you're already going down the wrong road.
If you want to become rich and successful, it's very simple.
You need to focus on what you can do that will provide the most value to as many people
as possible in the world.
Money is then the byproduct of providing immense amounts of value to people's lives.
Peter Diamandis, who wrote the book Bold, which is freaking mind-blowing,
this guy makes me feel like I've accomplished nothing in my life.
Because he's insane, The stuff that he does,
he does just the craziest things that you don't even think that one human could do,
let alone multiple humans could do. But what he does though, is he breaks it down in his book.
And what he says is, don't worry about becoming a billionaire. Figure out how you can provide value to a billion people and then just charge $1 for that piece of
value and you have become a billionaire. So let me say that again. Don't worry about becoming
a billionaire. Figure out how you can provide value to a billion people's lives, and then just charge $1 for that piece of value,
and you will have become a billionaire. It sounds so simple, doesn't it? It's so simple when you
break it down that way. But we spend our waking hours stressing about and in search of money,
money, paper that you use in exchange for stuff. That's all it really is. And that's why so many people that become rich and successful or just rich are not happy is because they realize they
spent 10 or 20, 30 years going after green pieces of paper. They would be much happier if they changed people's lives in the process
and got those green pieces of paper as a byproduct. It is the most simple way to break
down success. But the one part that people never hear or they just never fully understand,
money is not the destination. Money is the payoff when you
get to the destination. Value is the journey and the destination you should be focusing on.
Value. What value can you provide to the marketplace that other people cannot? Or
what value can you articulate better than somebody else to the
marketplace? Or how can you just provide value to the marketplace? Another reason to focus on value
is because you're focusing on how you can impact others. Value inherently means that you are
helping other people out. You're focusing on helping people versus helping yourself. It's like my episode
where I talk about how many people do you want at your funeral versus how many digits do you
want in your bank account when you die? Just think about that. Do you want a ton of digits
in your bank account when you die? Or do you want a ton of people at your funeral when you die?
Because here's the deal. The more value, the more lives that you impact, the more people will come to your funeral. And in that
case, if you do it right, you will be able to make money or monetize however you are providing value.
And let's say that you become rich. When you die, do you want to be known as the person who was really good at making money
or the person who impacted other people's lives and just so happened to make a lot of money doing
it? Think about that. So when you're focusing on money, realize you're focusing on the wrong
thing. Stop yourself and stop focusing on money and start thinking, wait, if I'm thinking about
money, I'm not thinking about the value. Where can I provide value? If you're working for somebody
else and you know eventually one day you want to work on your own and have your own business,
ask yourself this question, what value can I provide to the market? And think about the value.
The company that provides the most value, the person that provides
the most value will also just so happen to be the one that makes the most money. Think about that.
Just let that sink in and use those words. So what I would say is get a pen and paper at the
end of this episode, not if you're driving, but write down what do I really want and how can I provide
value to as many people as possible? What do I really want and how can I provide value to as
many people as possible? And that just could be the ticket to your success. So if you like this
