Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor Podcast. I'm your host, Rob Dial. And if you have not yet done so, hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another podcast episode. And if you're out there and you want to receive motivational text messages from me directly to your cell phone, text me right now, 512-580-9305. Once again, 512-580-9305. Today, I'm going to be teaching you one really big tip to help you read faster and also learn faster as well. And I'm going to give you a really crazy, couple of crazy statistics to kind of make you understand how this is going to help you, but also make you understand how this is going to set you apart from everybody else in the world right now. And these are the statistics. Check this out. 33% of people who graduate high school
Starting point is 00:00:57 never read another book again the rest of their life. 33%. 42% of college graduates never read another book again their entire life. So almost, you know, if you're looking at that, almost half of the people who graduate college never read another book again the rest of their life. And 80% of US families did not buy a book last year. That means one out of five families bought a book. 20%. Four out of five did not. And here's the crazy part about it. If you want to set yourself apart, the average CEO reads 60 books per year. So let's look at that for a second. 33% of high school graduates never read another book again. 42% of college graduates never read another book again. And 80% of US families did not buy a book last year. But the average CEO reads 60 books per year.
Starting point is 00:01:51 That's more than one book per week. So what does it show you? If you want to get ahead in life, if you want to be more successful, if you want to set yourself apart from the crowd, this is an amazing secret because it shows you how you can get ahead. You just simply have to develop the habit and the routine of reading more often. Now,
Starting point is 00:02:11 when I say reading, this doesn't necessarily mean fiction books. You can read fiction books if you want, but when they're actually looking at these CEOs, these CEOs are not really reading fiction books, reading nonfiction books, business books, self-help books, fitness books, all of these things to improve who they are as a person. And if you're not sold enough of why you should be reading more books, reading also improves your focus, it improves your memory, it improves your empathy and communication skills, and especially important right now with all the stuff that's happening in the world right now, it reduces your stress and it improves your mental health. And the smartest and wisest people who have ever lived have all written books. All
Starting point is 00:02:53 of the knowledge that you want, anything you could ever want to learn is literally at your fingertips right now. All you have to do is just go and get books. Now, the cool thing is you can go ahead and you can read from someone that was, you know, 500 years ago, a thousand, 2000 years ago. They're not alive now, but you can still learn from them as if they are a form of your mentor. So if I didn't tell you enough on why you need to start reading more books or start reading books, period, I hope that I did at this point, but let me teach you how you can actually read faster and store more knowledge much, much quicker. And this is important because some people hate reading books. Like I've heard people say, I hate reading books. I'm not a fan of reading books.
Starting point is 00:03:34 If you hate reading books, this is also going to help you out a lot. It will help you read a lot of books, even if you hate reading books. Now, here's the key to it, okay? To start using Kindle and this thing called audible narration. This is something that I found a long time ago. I found it about five years ago when I was going to travel for six months with my girlfriend at the time, now my fiance, and we were going to travel and we're going to travel for six months in a bunch of different places and I couldn't bring books with me, but I did have an iPad. And so I started, I was like, ah, fine, I guess I'll go and I'll do some Kindle for a little while. And I used my Kindle because I had to, I didn't have a place to, you know, when you're traveling that much, you don't have a whole bunch of compartments.
Starting point is 00:04:16 You can put a bunch of books and bring them with you. So I started reading on Kindle. And the more that I started reading on Kindle, the more I started realizing there's a lot of secrets in Kindle that a lot of people, even people who use Kindle don't know about. Now, let me tell you this. I am not sponsored by Kindle in any sort of way. I wish they were paying me to tell you guys this, but they are not. But the good thing about it is you can use Kindle and then this thing called Audible Narration and it has it for almost every book. Now, what's the difference between, you know, an audio book and then Kindle with Audible narration? Let me explain it. This is what I do for every single
Starting point is 00:04:52 book that I possibly can is I do Kindle with Audible narration. Kindle is, you can read the book and you can literally just have it there and it's the book, but it's in, you know, on your iPad, it's on your phone, whatever it is. Audible narration is the audio book and it syncs up with the actual book itself. I'll explain what I mean by that. So you can go and you can buy the audio book by itself, but you just have the audio or you can buy Kindle. And then when you're checking out on Amazon, there's a little button for almost every single book. And it says, add audible narration for like $5, $6, whatever it is. What's crazy about it is that Audible narration is the audio book. And here's what's crazy. So let me explain to you. I went on and I was like, let me just pull up some books so I can kind of see the prices. The crazy part about it is that the audiobook itself is almost always around the same
Starting point is 00:05:45 price or more expensive than buying the Kindle and the Audible narration together. I don't know why it always works out this way, but even sometimes it's a couple dollars more. I'll give you an example. I looked up just real quick before I started this podcast, The Alchemist, amazing book. The audiobook for The Alchemist is $21. The Kindle is $11. And the Audible narration is $12. So you can have the audiobook for $21, or you can have the Kindle, which means that you can actually look at the words and everything and make notes, and I'll tell you about that in a second.
Starting point is 00:06:18 The Kindle and the Audible narration, which is the audiobook, for $23. So it's either $21 for just the audio book or everything for $23. And most times it's actually cheaper for some reason. I don't know why for you to be able to do it with the Kindle in the audible narration. Now here's the secret with this, you can speed up the talking that somebody does two, sometimes three times, depending on the book. And so while you're reading the book, this is the best part about it, is it highlights the sentence that the audio book is actually saying to you. And so what's cool is it's basically like having somebody read the book to you and you
Starting point is 00:07:02 can just sit back and read it with them. And so what's cool about it is that, you know, you're reading it, you're seeing it on the page and somebody is reading it to you because it's the audio book. So you're not just seeing it, you're also hearing it. So instead of just getting one sense, you're actually getting two senses. You're hearing it and you're seeing at the same time. Then what's cool is it highlights all of the words that you're on. So you know exactly where you are and you can speed them up to X so you can read the books twice as fast. Now you're reading it and you're hearing it as well. And here's what's
Starting point is 00:07:34 cool. I love one of the things I got into. One of my first mentors taught me is highlighting and underlining books. If you go through all of my physical books that I have in my house, I still have hundreds of them. They're all underlined and highlighted. And I put notes and I, you know, talk about how it's going to work in my life or what I can take from this. What's cool about Kindle, I should be, they should sponsor this podcast episode, but they're not. So the thing about Kindle though, that's really cool is you can underline and highlight stuff and take notes inside of the actual Kindle app itself. And here's what's amazing. Let's say that I'm sitting right here and I'm going to read in the morning.
Starting point is 00:08:10 I'm at the office right now, but let's say I'm reading in the morning in my house and I have to go because it's time for me to go. What's cool is I can be reading the book and listening to it through audio, you know, audible narration, and I can be reading it and I might be like, man, I'm like really into this book right now. I can go into my car, connect my Bluetooth, my phone to my car. And the cool thing about it, now I can use it as an audio book and listen to it. And if there's a part that I really like that I want to like highlight, I can push pause. And next time I get to, and I always do this next time I get to a stoplight, I don't do it while I'm driving. So please don't do this while you're driving. What happens is when I get to a stoplight,
Starting point is 00:08:46 then I go in and I highlight the part. I'm going to tell you why I love highlighting in a second, because it's super important. There's all these little tips. I hope you guys use this. I can then, when I get to the stoplight, I can highlight the part that I liked, push play again, and now I can just listen to the audio book as I'm driving. So instead of just having time where I can read, I can literally have time where I can read. And then when I'm driving, if I want to finish the book, and this is how I finish books like in a week, super, super fast, is that when I sit down to read them, I'm reading them.
Starting point is 00:09:13 And you know, someone's reading it out loud to me through the audible narration. And then when I get in my car, every single time I get in my car, I'm either listening to a podcast or I'm playing the book that I'm reading that week. And I get through books so much faster that way because I can have the actual physical version of it on Kindle. And then I can have somebody reading it to me when I'm driving as well. Hey, I'm excited to tell you about a fascinating podcast called Healthy Conversations hosted by Dr. Daniel Kraft and presented by CVS Health. Every episode, Daniel drives one-on-one interviews with people who are transforming healthcare in real time. Physicians, scientists, technologists, and above all, innovators. The show's dispatches from the future include insight into tomorrow's precision oncology treatments, news on the latest in guided genetic health, reports on evolution of value-based care, and the breaking news research that is redefining functional medicine. You'll hear from people who are creating tomorrow's
Starting point is 00:10:59 clinical insights today. It's been said that the future is already here, it just hasn't been democratized yet. Healthy Conversations from CVS does just that. It's available free wherever you get your podcasts. New episodes appear every other week. Subscribe, listen, and learn today. What's cool too is you can also have it on up to three devices, I believe it is. So I only have my phone and my iPad, but every book that I have is on my phone, but it's also on my iPad. So I read on my iPad. And then if I want to go and go for that drive, if I'm reading my book on my iPad, and then I go for a drive, it literally will automatically update to where I was before on my iPad on my phone now. Now, here's what's really cool as well. Let's say you go to a
Starting point is 00:11:41 doctor's office. This will help so many of you guys learn so much more and retain so much more information. When I go to a doctor's office and I'm in a waiting room and I have 20 minutes, 15 minutes before they see me, I can sit there and I can take out my phone and I can scroll on Instagram and see some funny videos or go on TikTok and see some videos that way. Cool. I can do that. And sometimes I do do that. But one thing that I prefer to do is take my phone out, go to my Kindle, and there's a button where you can read just your highlights from the book. And so instead of scrolling, what I'll do is I'll actually reread the highlights and notes that I took from books so that I can basically reread the entire book, the most important parts of it in the 15, 20 minutes that I'm waiting in the doctor's office. Tell me that's not the most amazing thing. So instead of wasting my time on
Starting point is 00:12:30 social media or just going onto YouTube and doing all that stuff, all those things are great at their own time. I can reread some of my favorite books from two years ago that I have completely haven't read in a while. And I can reread all of the highlighted parts and get all of that, remind myself of all of that information and literally have that at my fingertips at any point in time. I use it all of the time. I have like 200 books on Kindle now. And sometimes I'll be like, well, let me look at this book. I finished this book a year and a half ago and I'll go to it and I'll just read the highlights from that. So this is super important because all of these are tips where you
Starting point is 00:13:06 can, number one, read and learn so much faster. Number two, you store the knowledge better because you're not just using one sense, you're using two of your senses. And you can go back and continue to keep learning and learning and learning and learning and learning over and over again from these books without having to reread the entire thing. And this is super important because now you can read more. And what I'll tell you is this, I would give you a massive tip is to look at your schedule and see where you can do more reading. For me, I prefer the morning. It's part of my morning routine to do it. And now in the evening as well, as a replacement to Netflix. I didn't like that we were watching more Netflix than I thought we should be. So I was like, hey, what if we decided to literally just watch one episode of whatever
Starting point is 00:13:48 it is that we're watching? So if we're watching Peaky Blinders or if we're watching Yellowstone or watching something, we'll watch one episode of it instead of like, you know, three, four, five episodes like some people will do. We'll watch one episode because if you enjoy it, allow yourself to enjoy it, like enjoy your life, please, at least a little bit, but watch one episode. It's 45 minutes to an hour. And then with the rest of that time, allow yourself to go and actually read and use it as a replacement for binge watching Netflix. And but you're still at the same time, allowing yourself to get Netflix or Yellowstone or whatever it is that you want. You know, don't strip yourself of something that you love.
Starting point is 00:14:23 And what's cool is a lot of people reach out to me and they're like, hey, I want to wake up earlier. I want to create a morning routine, but I'm a night owl. I have trouble falling asleep. I have trouble waking up early. This is a really great routine for helping you fall asleep as well and waking up, fall asleep earlier, but also wake up earlier is have a certain time in your day where you turn off your TV and do not allow yourself to use your phone unless you're using your phone for your Kindle. If you have an iPad, use your iPad instead, whatever it is that you need to. Or if you actually have a physical Kindle, you can do that as well. But don't allow yourself to get on your phone unless you're using Kindle and have a
Starting point is 00:14:59 time that's like a cutoff time. So you're like, okay, I want to go to bed at 10 o'clock. I want to go to bed at 10 o'clock. That means that I'm going to shut off all electronics, except for my Kindle at 9 PM. And then I can't do anything else except for read at that point. And then you just allow yourself to read. So what you do is you go and you get ready for bed, get fully ready for bed. If you want to go to bed at 10, get fully ready for bed at nine, and then go to your bed and create a routine where you read in bed and allow it to have you go to bed earlier. Because a lot of people fall asleep when they start reading. I would say like 75% of people I've ever heard are like, yeah, I get so tired when I read. I get so tired when I
Starting point is 00:15:37 read. One of the reasons why people don't get tired at night when they're not reading is because they're watching Netflix and they're seeing the bright lights and everything and the flashing in their eyes, and that's keeping them up in some way. But when you're reading, usually it starts to tire you out. And so can you develop a routine where you figure out the exact time you want to go to bed and at least an hour before bed, you shut off all of the electronics that you can. And then what you do is you read for the remainder of the time until either 10 o'clock hits or you might get tired at 9 37 and you decide you know what screw it i'm going to bed at 9 37 because i'm tired and this way what's cool is all of the info goes into your brain right before you go to
Starting point is 00:16:16 bed and then your brain can start to store it in your sleep when you're asleep and so this is super important because i think every person that's listening needs to read more. I think every person needs to read more, period. But there's no difference. There's one quote that I really love that says there's no difference between someone who cannot read and someone who does not read because both of them lead to ignorance. And reading books are like the cheat code of life. All of the knowledge that's ever existed since humankind has been able to write stuff down and store this on paper or on stones too, all of that knowledge is available for you at your fingertips. And so if you decide that you don't want to read, that's your decision. But if you want to get ahead,
Starting point is 00:16:59 if you want to set yourself apart, if you want to become the best version of yourself, you want to live to your highest potential, if you want to get as smart and knowledgeable and be able to get better at conversations with other people, and because you know more, one of the best ways to do it is to read. And so there's literally no good excuse not to read. And this are all my tips that I have for you. These are all my tips that I have for you for how to read faster, how to store your knowledge quicker, how to make sure you retain more knowledge, and at the same time, be able to reread books quickly and be able to read books much, much faster than anybody else that's out there. So those are all my secrets for you. That's all I got for you. I don't have anything else. I wish I had some more secrets on
Starting point is 00:17:39 how to read faster, but that's everything that I got. So if you love this episode, please share it on your Instagram stories and tag me in it, RobDialJr, R-O-B-D-I-A-L-J-R.
