Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor Podcast. I am your host, Rob Dial. And before we dive in, I have one quick announcement for you about a live class that I'm going to be doing this week. I just had the idea. I had a whole bunch of people reaching out to me and saying, Hey, Rob, can you give me tips on 2020 and make it 2020 the best year of my life and all of these things. And I decided, you know what, what if I just do one time, just a live class, no replay. Okay, so what I'm going to talk about today, I want to be real quick. First off, Merry Christmas to those of you guys that celebrate Christmas. Happy holidays to the rest of you guys that celebrate something else. But I just want to talk about the holidays. And the reason why is because I get a lot of messages from people saying, how do I get through the holidays when my family drives me crazy? Right. And so I want
Starting point is 00:02:31 to talk about that real quick. As today is Christmas, a lot of you guys are going to be spending time with your family. Maybe you're listening to me while you're driving to go hang out with your family and you're excited, but there's a part of you that's like, oh shit, like what am I going to do? My aunt annoys the hell out of me. I know my mom's going to be asking me why I'm still not married yet or whatever it is that annoys you about your family. And the tip that I always give people is this, is if you have people that are negative, if you have people that are in your life that just bring you down or they agitate you in some sort of way or there's something about them and they're in your family and you can't get rid of them necessarily, how can you change your
Starting point is 00:03:10 mindset around them? And I want you to think about that. What I always tell people is this, can you view your relationship with them and the time you spend with them as a challenge? As if the universe was putting you in that place to see how much you have grown, to see how good you have become, to see, you know, can we test this guy? Can we test John and see if he still reacts to his mom saying that to him and see it as a challenge as the universe putting, it's just like a video game, right? The more that you grow, the higher that you go, the harder the wind blows. So the more that you grow, the more that you get to persevere, the more that you try to master yourself, you're going to notice that certain things still piss you off.
Starting point is 00:03:53 And that's the next lesson for you. That's the next thing that you need to conquer. Because all too often, we know that the people that we're closest to, they know how to push our buttons. Whether they mean to or not, they know how to agitate us quicker than anybody else in the world. So how can you see that as a challenge? And the other thing that I want to say to you is this. Spend time with them and love spending time with them by being as present as possible. Put your phone away. Your phone will be there. Nothing is happening on Instagram that is that exciting.
Starting point is 00:04:30 I promise you nothing as exciting as, you know, spending time with your family and seeing what's going on with them and being present and laughing and feeling the feeling of being around them. And the one tip that I want to give you for being present that's super simple, one of my mentors gave me a long time ago, is to take 30 seconds. And you could do this with me right now. Take 30 seconds and notice everything around you that you can see so look around you see everything that you can see see it all bring it all in look at the the colors look at the then maybe if you're driving you can look at the the car that you're in you can look at the cars that you're passing
Starting point is 00:05:01 the grass on the side of the road the trees the sky the the car that you're passing, the grass on the side of the road, the trees, the sky, the car that you're in. You can see the dashboard and you can see the air vents and you can see all of it. You can see your pants. You can see your shirt. You can see your hands. You can see your watch, your bracelets. You can see and just notice all of the things that you can see first off. And you give yourself about 30 seconds to bring into your awareness all of the stuff that you can see. And then what you do after you've done that is you try to bring in everything that you can hear. You know, if you don't hear a whole lot, can you hear the silence deeper? Can you hear the clock on the wall? Can you hear every single thing about the room? And try to help you have that bring you into being more present. And then the last thing you try to notice is the touch. touch of your shirt that's on your skin, the touch of holding onto the steering wheel, a touch of
Starting point is 00:05:48 your butt on the seat, the touch of your pants, the touch of your shoes, a touch of every single thing. And so you give yourself 30 seconds of each. If you're trying to become more present, if you notice that you're two on your phone, you're like, oh, damn it. I didn't want to be on my phone because I wanted to be present with my family. Okay. Put your phone down. What can you see and give yourself 30 seconds to get everything into your awareness that you possibly can. Because all too often, we don't pay attention to everything that's around us, right? We block out a lot. Then what can I hear? Bring in as many things I can into what I'm hearing. You know, even if I just hear just the breath going in and out of my nose, right out of my mouth, or, you know, the moving
Starting point is 00:06:26 around a little bit. You can hear the leather under your butt, whatever it is, you can see the sounds, bring it in and then everything that you can touch and do that. That's a minute and a half and slow your breathing throughout the whole thing. And this practice alone helps you become more present. So those are the two tips that I have for you. I just wanted to pop on real quick and talk to you guys. Number one, if there's people around you that are annoying you, can you see it as a challenge for you to not react? View it as just another level in a game and the universe is just testing you. So that's first off.
Starting point is 00:06:56 Number two, be as present as possible. When your kids are opening their gifts, put your phone away. You don't need to videotape everything. Just see there, be there with them when they're watching christmas movies or christmas story whatever it is that you're watching can you be as present as possible with them notice them laughing notice them being how can you be as present as possible that's what i got for you for christmas i hope you guys have an amazing holiday and once again if you do want to join in on the uh the live class this week, which is gonna be this Friday, December 27th
