Starting point is 00:01:34 and that's how you will win. So once again, 9spokes.com slash Rob Dial. Today what I'm going to be talking about is how life is like an ocean. You know, it's moving, it's everything happens and comes in waves. And we're going to be talking about you being a surfer. Okay, and just this, just take this visual for a second. And I'm someone I've been surfing since I was about 14 or 15 years old. I've almost died surfing. And I want you to think about this. I almost died multiple times surfing actually, which is not good. It's
Starting point is 00:02:06 scary as hell, but think of it this way. Think of yourself, you're out surfing and you're out in the ocean, middle of the ocean, and you see this big wave coming in, this big, we like to call it, we call them sets, this big set coming in, right? Massive waves. And you're looking at it and you get the realization that, holy crap, this is going to come and there's absolutely nothing that I can do about this, right? If you're in that situation, some of you might be like, some of you that are afraid of water or afraid of big waves or whatever might be, might be getting sweaty hands just thinking about the fact of this massive wave coming in, right? Let me ask you this question. If you have a huge wave coming into you from the
Starting point is 00:02:46 horizon, would you rather be a surfer who is skilled, who's been working on your balance, who's been working on everything that you could possibly, you've been working on your balance, you've been working on your breathing, you've been working on your paddling, on your standing up, on all of those things. Would you rather be that surfer or would you rather be the surfer who has no clue what the F they are doing out there when you see a big wave coming? Answer, it's obvious, right? Of course, you want to be the skilled surfer that's been working on your balance, that's been working on your breathing techniques, that's been working on how to go up a wave, how to go down a wave. If it starts to barrel, how to get inside of the barrel, how to do all of these things. That's who you want to be, right? Now, how does this really relate to life? It's the exact way
Starting point is 00:03:30 that you would think. Everything that happens to us in life comes in waves, right? Sometimes it's very calm. You know, it might've been calm for you for a little while where there's nothing bad's been happening. Everything's pretty good, but you might've just got out of a really bad set. This might've come in and might've destroyed you. It might've rolled you around a little bit. Life is like that. Life can be very calm sometimes like a very calm ocean, but life can also be crazy. It could be nuts sometimes. And the thing that you have to realize is this when life, whether it is calm or whether it is crazy, you want to be the skilled surfer. You want to be the surfer that no
Starting point is 00:04:05 matter what comes in at you from the horizon, you can deal with it. You know how to deal with it. Why? Because when it was calm or when you were on the beach, you were working on your skills. You were working on your balance. You were working on your breathing techniques, right? Because here's the thing. Sometimes you're out in the ocean and it's calm. Sometimes it's crazy. But what matters, the best surfers are not the ones who just surf the most. They're the ones who also put in the work when they're on the beach, when they're on land, they work on themselves as much as they possibly can. So how does this relate to your life? This is how it relates to your life. This is the reason why I personally believe that if you really think about it, personal growth is the most important thing that you can do. It's because it makes your life better. It makes everyone else's life around you better, right? The more that you work on yourself right now, you know, it might be calm for you right now. You might be, you know, on land, just like, you know, you're just chilling. You're looking at the waves. You're not in the ocean right now. You're just chilling. You're looking at the waves. You're not in the ocean right now.
Starting point is 00:05:09 The more that you work on yourself, you work on your psychology, you work on your emotions, your thought patterns, the way that you talk to yourself, your self-talk, the way you talk to other people, the way that you wake up in the morning and you meditate and you journal and all of those things, the more that you put into yourself right now, well, when those big treacherous waves come in from the horizon, the more skilled you will be as a sur, well, when those big treacherous waves come in from the horizon, the more skilled you will be as a surfer to go through those things. When the crazy things in life come at you, you can handle them because you've been working on yourself in the off season. You've been working on yourself when the waves haven't been coming in, right? Because that's really what life is about. Life is about taking
Starting point is 00:05:45 the things that happen to you, learning from them, making them into a lesson and becoming better, right? You can only become better if you're able to stand up on that wave and not just be the person that just takes the wave to the face and gets thrown all over the place. So you have to think about that. We have to realize that life is like an ocean. Sometimes it's flat. Sometimes it's crazy. But the best surfers are the ones who work on themselves all of the time so that when they have those big, huge, treacherous waves, it's fun, right? That's why self-development is so big because here's the deal. If you know how to surf, surfing is the most exhilarating thing in the world, right? It is the best thing in the world because you're literally on top of water riding energy. It's the most euphoric thing ever to ride a wave and that's why it's so addicting to people.
Starting point is 00:06:36 But if you don't work on yourself, if you don't know how to stand up on a wave, you will get your butt kicked every freaking time. And the ocean is not like some really nice thing. It comes in and it will kick your butt every freaking time. And so you have to realize the exact same way that the ocean works is the exact same way that your life works. You're going to have bad times.
Starting point is 00:06:58 There's a pretty good chance that by the time that you leave this planet, you will have at least one more really bad time or something happen to you. That should not get you nervous, right? You should work on yourself now so that when it does come at you, you can be the skilled surfer that can ride that wave and actually get something out of it, get positivity out of it that makes it exhilarating. Sometimes it's not great to go through those things, but if you are able to be a skilled surfer and to go and work with those waves,
Starting point is 00:07:26 life is amazing. Because you know that no matter what life throws at you, you'll be able to handle it because you're skilled. You've been working on yourself. This is why personal development and self-help is so important. You need to work on yourself, not just when things are bad. You need to work on yourself, not just when things are bad. You need to work on yourself every single day. You need to work on yourself every single day, right? When the plane is going down, you put the oxygen on yourself first. And the reason why is because if you put
Starting point is 00:07:58 the oxygen on yourself, you can then help everybody else out. You should never be quote unquote so busy that you don't have time for personal growth. You should never be quote unquote so busy that you don't have time for personal growth. You should never be so busy doing other things for other people that you don't work on yourself because the better you are, the better everybody else around you will be as well. So when life throws those things at you, I hope, I hope, number one, I hope you don't have to go through anything crazy. But number two, if you do go through those things, I hope that you've been preparing and making yourself better for when those times come. So life is just like the ocean.
Starting point is 00:08:34 But the question is, are you going to be a skilled surfer? Are you going to be the one that's completely ill-prepared and get your butt kicked? So once again, if you have not yet done so, put yourself into the drawing for the free month of one-on-one coaching with me. Go to 9spokes.com slash Rob Dial. Please share this episode with a friend.
