And if you love this podcast, if you've ever gotten any value from it, please do me a favor,

imagine because the more positive reviews that we get, the more that they show this to other people
and the more that we are organically found. Today, we're going to be talking about how your mind
changes your reality. And this is a fun one. And I always get people that reach out to me and ask
me like, hey, is the stuff that you talk about based in science? Everything that I talk about,
if I talk about it and give you statistics, any of that stuff, you can guarantee that it's based
in science. And what I'm going to be talking about today specifically is from a woman named
Allie Crum. And she is a professor of psychology at Stanford and the director of the MindBodyLab.
And just some of the studies that she has done on people
and their mindset and how their mindset actually changes their reality and in some crazy ways,
actually changes their body just off of the way that they think. And so we're going to be talking
about the placebo effect. And we're also going to be talking about something called the nocebo
effect and what that means and how you can use both of them in your life. So let me tell you a couple of studies just
to kind of give you some facts as to how, when you think certain things, it actually changes your
body's response. And so there was a study that was done that they did a few years ago and they gave
people a milkshake, right? And what they did was they measured the body's physiological response to a milkshake.
And they gave them, quote unquote, two different milkshakes, one one week, one another week.
And, you know, one of them was a high fat, high calorie.
If you can't see me, I'm using air quotes.
High fat, high calorie.
And one was what they called the sensible
low calorie shake. In reality, it was the exact same shake. There was no difference between the
shake. They gave them the same shake week one. They gave them the same shake week two. But what's
crazy is what they told them about the shake actually changed their body's physiological
response to that milkshake. So when they told them on week one, hey, we're going to give you a high fat, high calorie shake. And what we're
going to do is we're going to draw your blood before, we're going to draw your blood after,
we're going to see how your body changes. And so they gave them a quote unquote high fat,
high calorie shake, which was just a normal shake, about 300 calories. And what they noticed
was week one, they gave them the quote unquote high
calorie, high fat shake. The second week, they gave them the sensible low calorie shake. Once
again, the exact same shake. But when they ate or drank the high calorie, high fat shake,
the ghrelin in somebody, which ghrelin is the chemical that makes you feel hungry,
the ghrelin response in the people who had the, or thought they had the high calorie,
high fat shake, the ghrelin dropped three times more than when they thought they were consuming
a sensible shake. Basically, their bodies responded as if they had consumed more food, as if they had
actually consumed high-fat, high-calorie shake, even though it was the exact same shake, which
shows you it wasn't the shake at all. What was it? It was the person's mindset around what they
were consuming. Now, before we go any further
and tell you the other ones, this doesn't mean that you can just eat pizza and fatty food and
not the best food all day long and tell yourself it's good and that you're just magically going
to be fit. There's a lot more we could dive into with that, but it just shows you in this one
example that literally what they think about the shake changed their body's physiological response to the shake. Another study that they did was they went and found people who they thought,
you know what, what are some people who have jobs where they do a moderate amount of exercise,
like they do a decent amount of exercise throughout the day, and they might not know
that they have a decent amount of exercise. And at this point in time when they did it, the surgeon general minimum that they said
was that people should get a minimum of at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per
day.
And so what they did is they actually found a group of hotel housekeepers.
And they went to all of them because if you think of a housekeeper, they're on their feet
all day long.
They're going up and down stairs.
They're cleaning. They're lifting all of the sheets, throwing them inside washers. They're constantly
moving. They're doing much more than 30 minutes of moderate exercise every single day.
They went up to these ladies and they said, hey, if you were to rate yourself on a scale of one to
10, how much do you feel that you work out? How physical do you feel like you are? How well do
you feel like you take care of yourself? And on average, these women rated themselves a three out of 10 as to how they take
care of themselves. And so what happened was they randomized this group of women and they put one
into one group and one into another group. And they told one of the groups, group A, they told
them how great their work was to their bodies. They said, hey, look, if you look, the surgeon general
says you should do 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day. You're doing way more than that. You're
taking care of yourself and you don't even realize it. Your job is actually something that's keeping
you in better shape. These women's mindsets were like completely changed on it. They followed up
with them a few months down the road. And group A, the group that they told
that their work was great for them and for their bodies,
they lost weight and they decreased their blood pressure
by an average of 10 points.
And they also rated that they felt better about their bodies
and they felt better about their work.
And none of the women reported any differences
in their diet or their workout routine.
So think about that for a second. They were able to lose weight. They were able to lower their
blood pressure on average of 10 points, feel better about themselves, their bodies, their work,
and did not report any differences in their diet or their workout routine, which shows you that it
wasn't actually the physical movement itself. It was a way that they viewed the physical movement actually changed their body's physiological response
to the work that they were doing. Now, this doesn't mean you can just sit on your couch and
say, hey, I'm working out right now and lose weight because these women were actually doing
a whole lot of work. They were doing quite a bit of exercise through their work. But it just gives you
an idea of group A had a decrease in their blood pressure by 10 points. They lost weight. Group B,
there were no changes because nobody told them about the benefits of their work on their body.
And so really what this comes down to is something called the placebo effect. When we are told about
something, and the placebo effect, just to give you an idea,
the placebo effect is when they will have a drug that they're testing, they'll have a brand new
drug, and they'll give half of the group the drug, and they'll give the other half of the group a
sugar pill, which should do absolutely nothing. And what's crazy about it is that the sugar pill
will act, people will get a sugar pill and they will think, hey, this is the thing that's going
to cure my disease. And that sugar pill, quote unquote, that sugar pill will cure their
disease, but it's not the pill itself. It's that they actually think that they are being cured.
And through the thinking of being cured, they actually cure themselves. And the placebo effect
is required in all drug studies. There is more data on the placebo effect, which is somebody's
mind, than any other drug in the entire world. And the placebo effect is 33% of all medical healings.
People think that they're healed, and they're healed. How fucking crazy is that? I don't know
why people don't talk about this more. Because just by thinking someone is healed,
someone can heal himself. But you've got to think about that for a second. And then you've got to ask yourself, okay, if I can think myself to be healed, can I also think myself to be sick?
And the answer is absolutely. Hey, what do you spend on subscriptions each month? Most people
think it's around $80 a month on subscriptions, but actually we spend closer to $200 a month. Truebill is a new app that helps you identify
and stop paying for subscriptions that you don't need, want, or you just simply forgot about.
On average, people are saving thousands of dollars a year with Truebill. So you'll have
your subscriptions in one place, keep the ones that you want and cancel the ones that you don't
right from the app. And your Truebill concierge is there when you need them to cancel unwanted subscriptions so you don't have to. No talking to humans,
no difficult conversations. And I love Truebill because I saved my friend Eddie $144 on his
monthly subscriptions. Truebill has over 2 million users and helped him save over $100 million.
Like Matt B who says, in a matter of seconds, I saved $660 a year on my DirecTV bill,
saved $120 for the year on my SiriusXM bill, and saved $840 a year on car insurance.
So start canceling your unused subscriptions at Truebill.com slash dial. Go right now once again to Truebill.com slash dial. It could save you thousands a year. Truebill.com slash dial.
So when people are told about the negative side effects, when they're going and
getting a brand new drug and they're told really in depth about the side effects, they're more
likely to experience those side effects. People who think they have a fever have a three degree
jump in their temperature. So sometimes people think that they're getting sick and they can
create those physiological symptoms in their body. So you've got to think about that for a second. What does this show you? It shows you that what you think about everything in your life changes you and everything in your life.
everything in your life. It's like the Wayne Dyer quote, when you change the way you look at things,
the things you look at change. If you change the way you look at your body, your body actually changes. When you change the way you look at your relationships, your relationships change. You look
at your job, your finances, your happiness, your joy, your peace, all of those things change when
you change the way that you look at them. So it's not just the circumstances themselves in our lives
that make a difference, but what you think about the circumstances. It's like the story of the two sons who have an alcoholic father.
And then they fast forward 30 years, and one of them is a very successful businessman,
and the other one is homeless alcoholic. And they walk up to the successful businessman,
and they say, hey, why are you not an alcoholic? And he says, I'm not an alcoholic because my father was an alcoholic. And then they go up to the homeless alcoholic son and they say,
why are you an alcoholic? And he says, I'm an alcoholic because my father was an alcoholic.
They both had the exact same life circumstances. The difference is what their life became comes
from the way that they actually looked at the circumstances that they had in their life.
came comes from the way that they actually looked at the circumstances that they had in their life.
So you've got to start to think about this and ask yourself, what are you thinking about your entire life? What are you thinking about your past? What are you thinking about your present?
What are you thinking about your future? What are you thinking about your body? What do you think
about your relationships? What are you thinking about the people around you? What are you thinking
about your bank account? What are you thinking about your happiness? Everything. Because the way that you think about it actually changes the thing itself.
And once again, don't think that you can just sit around all day, eat shitty food,
tell yourself you're healthy and you're rich, and it's just going to make you thin and rich.
Like that's not going to happen, obviously. There needs to be the correct action that is taken in
some way. But when you change the way that you look at these things, the things you look at are actually changing. But what you tell yourself, instead of saying,
oh, I'm eating crappy food and it's going to make me healthy and I'm just so thin,
instead of telling yourself that, your mindset around the food that you're eating is what is
important. So instead of eating crappy food, you eat some healthy food and you tell yourself,
I am enjoying this food.
I am enjoying what it's doing to my body. I am enjoying that this food is giving me nutrients.
I'm enjoying that this food is making me healthy. I'm enjoying that this food is going to make me
live longer. And you will actually love the taste more because of the way that you're looking at the
food that you're eating. So some people are like, I can't eat healthy food because it just doesn't
taste good. No, that's not true. You're just so in love with the taste of the bad food and you're not allowing
yourself to fall in love with the taste of the good food. There's definitely some really, really
good healthy food. So when you tell yourself, I love what this healthy food is doing to me. I love
that it's giving me the nutrients that I need, that I'm going to live long, that it's making me
thinner, all of those things, you will be more inclined to go for the healthier food the next time around.
If you hate the gym, instead of just showing up to a gym and be like, I fucking hate being here.
I hate being here. This sucks. This sucks. I'm going to go ahead and do it anyways.
You tell yourself how much you love enjoying taking care of your body. Remind yourself of
how each set matters. And you can say to yourself, this is hard,
but I love that I showed up for myself. And what happens is you take the things that are the things
that are going to make massive shifts in your life, the taking care of your body, the eating
healthy, the showing up and making, you know, a hundred phone calls in your sales position.
You know, you don't have to love that, but you can love the outcome that will come from it and focus on that. You know, I remember there
was a last year in my mastermind, which is the people that I work with over the course of a year.
I was working, one of our people under our mastermind, Amar, he was taking a flight
to Puerto Rico with his wife and his four young kids, all under the age of nine. And I remember
the day before he left for the flight, we had a call, all of us did. He's like, this flight is
going to be a bitch. Because he was just thinking about taking his flight from North Carolina all
the way to Puerto Rico and how he had all of the kids and how it was going to be a bitch and how
crazy it was going to be. And I was like, my exact phrase to him that he literally wrote down and he
keeps in his office is if you think it's going to be a bitch, it's going to be a bitch. But I said to him,
hey, what if instead of that, you just reframed your mindset and said, hey man, how amazing is it
that I can afford to take my family down to Puerto Rico on a vacation? How amazing is it that I can
buy everybody first-class tickets so that we can fly comfortably down there? How amazing is it
that I can get to spend all of this time with my children? And you start to actually look and find the good in everything that's
happening. He came back from that trip and he was like, I can't believe it, but it was amazing.
He's like, the flight was amazing. The kids were amazing. The trip was amazing. People kept coming
up to us and telling us around the pool about how well our kids were acting around the pool and they
weren't going crazy. He's like, it ended up being amazing. But if I would have looked at it as if this is going to be really
hard, it would have been much harder. Well, there's an example. When you change the way you
look at things, the things you look at change. We get what we're looking for, but you have to
realize the power of your belief, the power of what you're thinking, because your belief changes
your words. Your words change your world. And what you speak, you speak into existence in this world.
And so don't ever say something like, I can't do that. I hate when I hear someone say, I can't.
You know, I had Matthew McConaughey on about a year and a half ago. And he said the third,
the third spanking he got was because he said, I can't to his parents. And that was like not
allowed inside of his family was to say, I can't. Don't say I can't. Say, I haven't been able to do
that yet, but I will. Or I'm improving at that. See how that little shift in the way that you
speak changes the way that actually you're going to show up to it? Instead of saying,
I'm not good at math, say, I'm improving at math.
It's a little shift. It's not big. It's a little tiny shift. And we're not lying to ourselves.
We're improving at math. Every time we do math, we're improving at it. The difference is
closing the door and slamming the door shut of, I'll never be able to do that thing.
Or I'm not good at math to, hey, I will one day be able to do that thing. I am improving at that
thing. I'm not good at math right now, but I'm improving at it. I'm working at it. I'm going to be better
at math tomorrow than I am today. If you can change your body's physiological response to
a milkshake, if you can get your temperature to raise three degrees simply by believing
that you have a fever, you have to realize you can change everything around you by the way that
you look at it. If somebody can cure themselves by having a sugar pill, which literally does
absolutely nothing, but they believe that it cures the disease that it has and the belief
is the thing that cures the disease, don't you think that you could use the placebo effect in your life? And so think about that. Where in your life are you being called to use the placebo
effect? Are you being called to focus more on the good versus the bad? When you're being focused
more on the future that you want versus the future that you don't want? Were you being called to
be the person that you need to be versus being the person that you have been? Were you being called to be healthier for yourself and
fall in love with the aspect of being healthy versus falling in love with the way something
tastes momentarily for the five minutes that you're eating it? You create your reality in
every single moment. And in order to succeed, you must first believe that you can succeed.
to succeed, you must first believe that you can succeed. And so you have to ask yourself,
where am I being called for more belief, more mindset shifts, and to use the placebo effect in other areas of my life? And if you can start to realize that what you focus on matters and
changes your world, and you use it at every single moment and every single thought, your world
will start to shift around you.
