Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor podcast. I'm your host, Rob Dylann. If you have not yet done so, hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another podcast episode. Today is Thursday, which means it is the business edition of the Mindset Mentor, which means that I am joined by my best friend and business partner, Dean DeVries. Dean, what's going on, buddy? It's another day in paradise here in the studio. Happy Thursday. Happy Thursday. Today, we're going to be talking about developing your awareness. And, you know, I always say that if I could give people a superpower, you know, people are saying like, you know, if you could give the entire world a superpower, what would it be? And I always say
Starting point is 00:00:44 extreme self-awareness? And the reason why I think that's important is because I think that all of the world's problems come from lack of self-awareness That's why self-awareness is so important I think it's the main issue in the world that's going on right now is that people aren't self-aware of themselves and lack of self-awareness causes even more lack of awareness around the people that are around them and people think they know themselves and they know themselves on a very surface level level, but they actually have no idea of the unconscious patterns that are driving their behaviors on a moment to moment basis. There's so many unconscious patterns that they've had since childhood that they picked up
Starting point is 00:01:23 to protect themselves from traumas that they could have had when they were younger. And they have no idea how those unconscious patterns are actually self-sabotaging them in their relationships, in their business, in their bank account, in every single thing that they do. Yeah. And this is really important because in order to have any sort of change or transformation in your life and your business, it all starts with awareness. Anything that is within your awareness is your choice. You can't change anything you're not aware of. Exactly. If it's outside of your awareness, there's no influence you can have over it.
Starting point is 00:01:56 And so what I'm excited to share on this episode is a practice that I have been using actually, you know, for the last 30 days and for a month straight, I implemented a practice that just, I'm a pretty self-aware person. I've worked a lot of my own self-awareness. Um, but it's helped me realize that there's an infinite level of awareness that we can, we can tap into. And it all starts with our curiosity, really being willing to look for it and allow every experience to be the classroom that we can get new awarenesses from, which can then spark new transformations and new changes that we make in our life to create the life that we want. Yeah. And that's why we love business. And this is, we're going to look through this mostly through the lens and the filter of business, but this could be for anybody
Starting point is 00:02:49 out there. You're going to listen to this and be able to get a lot from it because business. And the reason why I love it is because your business is like a mirror. If your business is failing, it all comes back to you. You know, if everything in your business is going well, but there's a portion of your business that's failing, it all comes back to you. And it also all comes back to whoever might be leading that portion of the business. But it comes back to you. It comes back to how you're showing up. It shows back to your leadership, to that person, to everybody else that's around them as well.
Starting point is 00:03:16 And that's why business is so important is because we really believe that people can grow their consciousness simply by running a business. Totally. And going back to that idea of that business is a mirror. I mean, think about the purpose that a mirror serves. Like when you look in the mirror, it's to gain a different perspective, right? You're kind of looking at yourself or looking at something from a perspective other than just looking straight at. It just gives a greater perspective or a different perspective. And the purpose is to increase awareness. And, you know, it's kind of like
Starting point is 00:03:50 in, in college, you know, when you get passed out drunk and, and, you know, you get the Sharpie on the face. Yeah. I had that on my, I had that on my 20th birthday, I got drunk and passed out on my friend's couch. And when I woke up, everyone was looking at me real weird and laughing. And I was like, I don't know what's so funny. Then I was walking around and people were looking at me and laughing. I was like, is it just funny that I've been drinking and I'm just so drunk on my birthday? And then I go into the bathroom and I realized they literally took Sharpie markers and painted my entire face with just black Sharpie markers. And so I just had scribbles all over my face and on my forehead, it said happy 20th. So that's what you mean by literally this being a mirror. It's a different perspective and how
Starting point is 00:04:34 people can see you through this different perspective as well. Yeah. And it's interesting because the thing about business that is that it's very similar to having the Sharpie on your face, right? Where you're getting this feedback from the people around you, your clients, your employees, and just, just your business in general, you can actually take your results and allow that to be a mirror as well. And, you know, so what we're saying is that if we're, if we're really listening to the feedback that we're getting, whether it's, you know, the people laughing, you know, with the Sharpie on're getting whether it's you know the people laughing you know with the sharpie on the face where it's like where's what what's everybody laughing about right and and being
Starting point is 00:05:10 curious about it versus like jumping to conclusions right we're just like hey i wonder why everybody is laughing at me hey let me let me really dig into this and then when you get in front of the actual mirror it's like oh that's why well it's the same thing in business. Hey, why are my clients not buying from me? Or why are my employees or my team not getting great results? If we allow that to be the mirror and have the capacity to be curious about it enough to make some sort of change. But again, the first thing has to be curious about it enough to make some sort of change. And the, but again, the first thing has to be the awareness, but looking at those experiences as a way to develop and to, to work on things. And so again, what, what,
Starting point is 00:05:57 if you know what needs to be worked on, if you know that there's something that is happening and you take full responsibility for it and allow it to be the mirror, you can influence it. Yeah. Yeah. And at the same time, you know, we've been the head of many sales departments. We have lots of friends and know tons of people who run sales departments or have salespeople in their businesses. And a lot of times people will be like, Oh yeah, my salespeople aren't selling. And I'm like, well, what are you doing to influence their lack of selling or their terrible results or anything that happens to be happening with them? It's not
Starting point is 00:06:28 their fault specifically, anyone who is in your company and you happen to lead, it is your fault, whatever the results are, whether the results are good. If it's good, it's also your fault. If it's bad, it's also your fault. And so, you know, if you have people that, if you feel like customers are avoiding you, or if you feel like some of your employees are avoiding you in some sort of way, or it just feels weird, it just feels weird, right? A lot of people would be like, Oh yeah, fuck them. You know, it's, you know, that, that client's always been, you know, an asshole to me. And you start making excuses as to why it's the other person's fault. When in reality, you could be like, Hey, well, how am I showing up to make that person not be nice to me? How am I
Starting point is 00:07:11 showing? It's like the phrase, you know, if you wake up in the morning and meet an asshole, you met an asshole. But if you wake up in the morning and you, all you do is meet assholes, you're the asshole, right? It's like people don't become self-aware of like, how am I, how is my energy and how I'm showing up influencing the people that are around me and the results that they're getting? Yeah, that's huge. Personal responsibility, which we did an episode on that a couple months ago, but personal responsibility is actually the precursor to awareness too. Because if, if, if you're looking at the world and especially business, if you're looking at the world, and especially business, if you're looking at everything as something that's outside of your control
Starting point is 00:07:47 and outside of something you can take personal responsibility for, you're not gonna be curious about what you can do to influence it. So yeah, I just think that's a really big point because when you do take full responsibility, and it's not that, I think about like the,
Starting point is 00:08:02 what's that movie, Glen, Gary, Glen Ross, where it's like, the leads don't suck. You suck. And like that's like kind of true. Right. It's like you got to take full responsibility for it. So.
Starting point is 00:08:15 So, yeah, I think I'd like to dive into and share an experience that I've had over the last 30 days. But before we do that, I just want you to think about, imagine for the next 30 days, if you're listening to this right now, and today's day one, if you just constantly expanded what you're able to influence, right? If you, if, if just more things became things that you could make an influence on, whether it's things outside of your business or inside of your business, right? If you can just change your closing percentage with your clients, if you could change the revenue immediately, right? If you could change the culture in your organization and imagine that you had 30 days of just constantly expanding
Starting point is 00:09:00 what you're able to influence, what could be possible. Yeah. And one thing I want to bring in here is that what Dean's going to say to you guys that he did and is in the process of still doing is, I know 95% of you are not going to do this. And I'm going to challenge you to do this because the reason why most people don't do this is because it takes a lot of work. And most people usually try to avoid work. So I want you, if you're listening, to be like, oh yeah, well, I'm going to show Rob. Well, show me. I want you to do this because extreme self-awareness is really needed. This takes a lot of work.
Starting point is 00:09:34 You'll start to notice things about yourself that you've never noticed before. But where this came from is we were having a conversation about how we should challenge ourselves, but also challenge our team. And one of the things that we brought up was just self-awareness in general. And I said, what if you and everybody on the sales team just decided to journal every single day for 30 days? And Dean went, well, what if I just journaled after everything that I do for 30 days? And so this is what we're actually going to dive into is how someone who has been working himself for over a decade, put hundreds of thousands of dollars into his own personal development, was able to gain more awareness for free simply by doing this act.
Starting point is 00:10:11 And that's what we're going to talk about. Hey, when it comes to recovery, performance, immunity, and feeling less stress, sleep is everything. And I actually found the answer to better sleep in a really, really delicious, healthy cup of cocoa. It's the Dream CBD Powder from Beam, and it's changed the way that I sleep. Starting point is 00:11:20 Hey everyone. If there's one thing I've realized in the past few years, it's that life is fragile and I'm not trying to scare you, but it's a fact that we never know when our time's really going to come. And that makes sense why people get life insurance, especially term coverage, which is surprisingly affordable. Why not pay a little bit each month just to protect the ones that you love? If you're asking yourself this question, then choose Ladder. Ladder is a 100% digital, no doctors, no needles, no paperwork. And when you apply for $3 million coverage or less, you need just a few minutes in a phone or laptop to apply. Ladder's smart algorithms work in real time. So you find out instantly if you're approved. If you do prefer to talk to a person,
Starting point is 00:11:56 their team of licensed agents don't work on commission. So they'll help you and not upsell you. There's no hidden fees. You can cancel at any time and you can get a full refund if you change your mind in the first 30 days. And ladder policies are issued by insurers with long proven histories of paying claims. They're rated A and A plus by AM best. And finally, since life insurance costs more as you age, now's probably the right time to cross it off your list. So go to ladder life.com slash dial today to see if you're instantly approved. That's L A D D E R life.com slash dial once again, ladderlife.com slash dial. Yeah. And one of the things that I realized through this process was that
Starting point is 00:12:37 there's so much wisdom in every single moment and there's so much wisdom inside of us. And what I realized is that wisdom doesn't come from just having an experience, right? It doesn't come from just the experience. It comes from the reflection of our experience because for many times throughout my life, I've also had experiences. I had a lot of experiences that I didn't necessarily, maybe I learned a little bit from it and it just kind of pieced it together to build some awareness. But man, these last 30 days have been so powerful for me because I've been really intentional about reflecting on almost all of my experiences. So the rule that I've kind of practiced for the last 30 days is if it's in my calendar to set aside even just two or three minutes. It doesn't take a whole
Starting point is 00:13:27 lot of time. It's simple and it's easy to do, but it's also easy not to do, right? Especially after a full schedule. We've been super busy lately with just preparing for our mastermind event and just the things that we're working on. So I'd be lying if I told you that I would, I, it was just like an easy process to do this. There were definitely times where my ego wanted to get in the way and get in the way of me actually doing this practice. But, um, but yeah, the, my, the role that I just, I, I operated by for the last 30 days was if it's in my calendar, I'm going to take at least two or three minutes just to reflect on it. And what I also found is that by just committing to two or three minutes,
Starting point is 00:14:12 sometimes it turned into 15 minutes because there's so much there. It's like, wow. And that's what I realized is that as long as we have the capacity to lean in, be curious about our experience and really reflect on our experiences, we can do something about it. We have so much bandwidth and so much awareness to be able to make an impact in different areas of our life and for my life that I didn't even think possible. life that I didn't even think possible. So I want to give you guys the exact journaling practice that I used for 30 days straight that led me to reflect on not just how I was showing up in business, but also ways that I was holding myself back. And I've, I've done a lot of work on myself on the, in this area, but there's still, you know, pain from past experiences. There's fear that gets
Starting point is 00:15:03 in the way, you know, it gets the best of me in the moments that, you know, pain from past experiences. There's fear that gets in the way, you know, it gets the best of me in the moments that, you know, I otherwise wouldn't have given any thought to if I didn't reflect on it because it's the little subtleties. There's a big difference going from like 50% to, to, uh, to like 95%, but that extra 5% is the difference maker. And so that's really what we're talking about. It's kind of like it's nuanced, but it's also what has been so profound for me. And, uh, and so I want to share this practice. Perfect. Okay, great. So just to, to be clear, uh, anything that is in your schedule at the end of getting done with it, you would take two to three minutes with your journal and you would just journal about it. And to be very clear on journaling, because a lot of people think
Starting point is 00:15:47 journaling is like, Hey, dear diary today, I just did this, or I just got off of a zoom call with X, Y, Z company. Like that's not really what it is. And so the best form of journaling is to ask yourself a question and then answer the question. That's the easiest form of journaling. Ask yourself a question, come up with the answer. So come up with the answer after it. And then if you feel like, man, there's more here, ask yourself another question around the answer that you just came up with. And the reason why this is important is because a lot of times we're very surface level in our life. We're very surface level with ourselves. We don't allow ourselves to get deep enough. And if we're surface level with just ourselves, we're really surface level around every single person as well. So what does this
Starting point is 00:16:28 journaling practice look like for you over the past 30 days? And by the way, what you just said was exactly my experience. I started off with some structure, which I am going to share the structure that I started off with, but it kind of ended up turning into this, you know, where the, the structure was kind of baked into the intention where I just I had more confidence going and going into the journaling which I also want to preface this by saying journaling has been probably the thing I've had the most resistance with with like you know the quote-unquote like personal growth practices just because I and I want to share this because I think this this could really resonate with a lot of
Starting point is 00:17:03 people being an achiever and being somebody that has always like been very oriented towards what my next achievement was. I used to think that journaling was like a waste of time. It felt unproductive to me because I'm like, I'm not doing anything right. I'm not, I'm not making any, any progress with these goals. There's no immediate sale coming in after a journaling session. And as a business owner, that's hard because you're like, I could be doing something right now to make money. So there's no immediate gratification from this. But there is delayed gratification of if you start to fix all of these little tiny things that are holding you back, then what does your business look like in a year? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:41 And by the way, learning delayed gratification also makes me a better business owner. So these are, there's, there's so much here. So, I mean, we could, we could literally talk for hours about this, but we're trying to keep this as concise as possible. So let me share this practice. I started off with just asking four questions. The first one was what was the outcome that I wanted? And part of this also is kind of an extension of the ritual that I usually have before, especially if I'm going into a meeting or a call or a conversation where maybe there's some high stakes. I'm going in with a visualization practice. So I always visualize the ideal outcome anyway.
Starting point is 00:18:22 But to actually reflect on it afterwards, this has been been new for me. But the question is, what was the outcome that I wanted? What was the outcome that I experienced? And so kind of just taking a check. And sometimes there was an outcome that I experienced that was actually better than what I wanted. But the next two questions I still asked regardless of if it was the outcome that I wanted or not and the third question is what could have caused that so what could have caused what what could have caused that experience to be or what what could have caused that outcome so if it was the outcome that I wanted what did Well, you know, what did I do to really create that? If it was the outcome that I didn't want, then I took full responsibility and say,
Starting point is 00:19:10 what, what did I do that that could have caused that? Yeah. And then the fourth one is how can I take responsibility for that? And what can I learn? I love that. And that's, this could be really good for anybody out there who is in sales or maybe in your business, you have salespeople. You can look at this and you can go, oh my gosh, I can literally implement this today with my sales team. You could go to every single one of them, say after every single enrollment call that you have, whether they buy or they don't buy, you're going to come up with this and you're going to say, what was the outcome that I wanted?
Starting point is 00:19:39 And I wanted a sale. Okay. What was the outcome that I experienced? It was a no sale. Okay. What could have caused that no sale? Well, if I'm being honest, I probably shouldn't eat. And the lunch that I did have is a little bit too heavy and I felt a little bit out of it. I wasn't as present as I could have been. Okay. How can I take responsibility for that? What can I learn?
Starting point is 00:19:57 Well, I could probably eat a salad instead. Maybe go get a shake instead so that therefore I don't feel like a drain in energy and I can be more present on my next phone call, which now I have the awareness built around the fact that I shouldn't eat that type of food so that I can show up differently. And maybe I'll have that place for lunch and have that place for dinner instead of lunch. Yeah. Or, you know, can look at it and say, what was the outcome that I want? I want to make a sale. What was the outcome that I experienced? I had a sale.
Starting point is 00:20:24 Okay. What could have caused that? You know what? I was really present with this person. I took a lot of time. We built rapport. There was a strong connection. I know that it's a lot easier to buy from someone that feels like a friend. I feel like they trust me. I feel like they felt like a friend and I feel like that that's what caused the sale. Okay. How can I take responsibility for that? What can I learn? I can learn that for this connection that I have had with them, I want to feel that at every single sales phone call. So I'm going to take more time to build rapport at the end of every single one of them. I mean, imagine if you're a salesperson or run a
Starting point is 00:20:53 sales team or you have salespeople, how much this will help. And this is originally why we did this is because we wanted our, our team, our sales team to develop more awareness as well. And this is how the whole practice started. Yeah. And once I started doing this, I realized how much I actually needed this because especially if you've got a really busy schedule where you're just like, you know, it's just like back to back to back. I mean, the last couple of months, both you and I, we've just been back to back to back. And so this is, I realized that I just really needed this because it was so easy to just, all right, let me close that one out. Let me start on the new thing here on my schedule.
Starting point is 00:21:29 And by taking a little bit of time to reflect on it and really holding that sacred, like having the standards of like, I don't care what is happening right now. This is the most important thing I can do to honor this experience. And the other thing that you just shared around like, Hey, how do I feel after that meal? Hmm. Maybe, maybe I should, you know, adjust what I'm doing. Like those types of awarenesses. And this is a whole other rabbit hole that we don't have time to talk about, but you begin to link how your experiences are going with the way that you're
Starting point is 00:22:00 prepping for them, how you're showing up the way that you're, you're thinking, maybe what you did the day before or the morning before, or, you know, a couple hours leading up to that experience. And it's helped me reinforce some of the habits that are really impactful for me and empowering for me. So you begin to, to have these linkages between like, hey, I got this outcome. Oh, wow. Yeah. There's a little bit of a pattern here that I'm starting to develop. And just in doing this, my habits have gotten so much better.
Starting point is 00:22:38 I'm getting more sleep consistently. I'm working out more consistently. I'm eating better than I ever have in a really long time. And just everything is getting better, even though most of the things I'm reflecting on are business related things. But there's so many awarenesses outside of that, that helped me just really show up in business a lot better. Yeah, I love that. And the thing about it is, let's go over the four questions one more time. So you guys all have this, if you're out there and you want to try this, write this down. I'm going to challenge you to do this for the next 30 days. Once again,
Starting point is 00:23:05 I know a lot of you out there, you're not going to do it. I'm challenging you right now to freaking do it. Number one, what was the outcome that I wanted? Number two, what was the outcome that I experienced? Number three, what could have caused that? And then number four, how can I take responsibility for that? And what can I learn? And this could be for everybody. Even if you don't have a business, like you could go, you know what? I had a conversation with my mom, needed to talk
Starting point is 00:23:28 about something. Okay. After the fact, you say, what was the outcome that I wanted? What was the outcome that I experienced? What could have caused that? How could I take responsibility and what can I learn? So we can constantly build this self-awareness. I want you guys out there listening to ask yourself this question right now. What would it look like if you were able to see every moment of your life as a classroom? Every moment, every good thing, every bad thing, every time that you're triggered, every single thing as a classroom, a moment for you to learn. Because in my personal belief, I believe that we're just here to experience and we're here to learn and we're here to grow. And I do believe that life is a classroom. And if you take this page out of Dean's book, which obviously you can see has had massive
Starting point is 00:24:08 awareness and massive change in his life from his life from it, it will be able to do the exact same for you. So last time I'll tell you the four questions, what was the outcome that I wanted? What was the outcome that I experienced? What could have caused that? And then how can I take responsibility for that? And what can I learn? Show up to every moment of your life like it's a classroom. I'm going to challenge you to do this. And I promise you yourself, your relationships and your business will all grow. So that's what we got for you for today's episode. If you love this episode, please do me a favor. Go on Instagram.
