from there. So once again, 9spokes.com slash Rob Dial. All right. Today, what I'm going to be
talking about is happiness because I personally believe that happiness is the most important
things that people should work for. And I'm going to tell you a story to help you understand a little bit of what I'm talking about. So there's a fisherman and he's sitting under a
tree and he's enjoying a nice cigar and it's the middle of the day and he's sitting in the shade
and a businessman comes up to him and he says, you know, sir, why are you here? It's the middle
of the day. You should be out fishing, making money and, you know, bringing more fish in.
And the guy says, oh, I've already caught enough fish for today.
And he says, well, why don't you, you know, it's the middle of the day. This is the perfect time for you to go out. Why don't you go out and actually catch more fish instead of wasting
your time and sitting here in the shadow of this tree? And the fisherman says, well, what would I
do by catching more fish? And the businessman says,
well, if you catch more fish, you could sell them, earn more money, and buy a bigger boat.
And the fisherman says, well, what would I do then? And the businessman says, you could go
deep sea fishing. You could buy a bigger boat, catch even bigger fish, earn even more money if
you have a bigger boat. The fisherman says, well, what would I do then? And the businessman says, then you could buy many boats, employ many people to work
for you and earn even more money. And the fisherman says, well, what would I do then?
And the businessman says, you become a rich businessman like me. And the fisherman says,
well, what would I do then? And the businessman says, you could enjoy your life peacefully.
And the fisherman asks, well, enjoy your life peacefully. And the fisherman
asks, well, sir, what do you think I'm doing right now? And the thing about this story is that the
businessman approaches the fisherman thinking that the fisherman, you know, he's angry that
he's sitting in the shade in the middle of the day when he could be working. But he's talking
about how he thinks the fact that if he becomes a rich businessman,
if he buys more boats, if he buys a bigger boat, if he employs people, he'll be able to live his
life and enjoy his life peacefully sitting on the riverside after. And the guy doesn't realize that
the businessman doesn't want any more from life. He's already happy the way that he is, right? He
doesn't need to earn more money. He doesn't need to become rich and successful. And the reason why I wanted to bring this story up to you is to make you realize that if you're
not happy at this moment or you find moments of complete unhappiness, it might be that what
you're working towards is actually not what you want. When you go on holiday, there is no finer
achievement than doing absolutely nothing. Nothing on the beach, nothing by the pool,
walking kind of nowhere and chatting about nothing. As an Expedia member, you can save up
to 30% when you add a hotel to your flight. So you can have a bit more money to go out there
with great ambition to do absolutely nothing. Expedia, made to travel.
Right? We all think that money is going to make us happier. Everybody wants more money. If you
listen to my voice, we all want more money. Let's just be honest. Let's not beat around the bush
because a lot of people are like, oh no, I don't want to make more money, but I just want to help
people and do those things. Yeah, of course you do. But if you can make more money doing it, you'd probably be more excited about it.
Right. And so you have to realize when you're on your road to success or through your life or
whatever it is that you're going through, it shouldn't be about how can I make more money?
How can I make more money? How can I make more money? It should be, how can I become happier?
Right. My friend
Noah talks about, he likes to engineer happiness. And this is one of my favorite things. I had to
steal this, the phrase from him, because I think it's the best phrase you could use.
What he does is, and this is what you should do. What I would recommend for you is take a pen and
paper and jot down everything that makes you happy. What are all of the things that make you
happiest? Is it going out with friends and going to the beach? Is it playing volleyball? What is it that
makes you the happiest, right? And make a giant list of them and try to put as many of those
things into your day every single day, right? You shouldn't, the reason why most people,
no, I don't want to say most people, a lot of people are unhappy is because they wake up
right before they need to get up and leave.
They take a shower, they brush their teeth,
they eat some food and they run out the door.
And then they go to sit in traffic for 30 minutes
and they go to a job that they hate.
And then they come back and they sit in traffic
for another 30 minutes.
And then they come back and they barely have enough time
to do anything that they actually want to do, right? So how can you take your day, whether you work for somebody or don't work for
somebody and engineer happiness? If you do work, if what I just described as you, how can you wait?
How can you put more time into, how can you, I'm completely messing up my words today. Sorry guys.
I get tongue tied talking about happiness versus money here. But. But if you wake up right before your alarm clock goes
and you have to go to this job that you hate
and then you find that you're not happy,
can you force yourself to wake up an hour earlier,
two hours earlier,
and do something that you love to do?
Whether that's just sitting on your back porch,
enjoying a cup of coffee with your dog,
watching the sunrise, right?
There's a few things that you could do
to make yourself happier. So if you're out there and you're listening to my voice and
you know, you're not always happy or there's, there's moments of, of complete sadness or
whatever it might be, or just, you just feel indifferent to life. Sometimes it might be that
you need to figure out what it is that you love more than anything else. What makes you the
happiest in this world, whether it's hanging out with specific people or whatever it might be. And put as much as that into your day as you possibly
can. Because ultimately, you're not going to look back at the end of your life on your deathbed
and go, man, I wish I would have made more money. Right? We all want to make more money, of course.
But what you're going to do is you're going to look back and go, man, I was really happy. I did all of the things that I wanted to do. And that's what's
most important. Because after making all of the money that you make, after all of that, right?
The only thing that really matters is that you could pay your bills and that you could feed
yourself. And that's about it. That's what matters the most. So you don't
have to make $100,000 a year. You don't have to make a million dollars a year. You have to pay
your bills, eat, and then do what makes you happiest. That's what really matters. Will making
more money make you happier? No. It might cause you the freedom to do more of the things that
you want, which is ultimately what we all think of money, right?
Buying more things is not going to make you happier.
If you do make more money, it allows you to have more freedom to do the things that you
want to do, right?
When you're able to have more money in your bank account, you don't have to worry about,
you know, if you're working for an employee or something going wrong or any of those things.
And so you have to realize money will not make you happy. It will buy you freedom to do things
that you want or to do more of the things that you want, but it ultimately will not make you happier.
So what you need to do is wake up every single morning, look at your list of what makes you the
happiest and try to put as much of that into your day as you possibly can. Just like the fisherman, the fisherman didn't need to make more money to be happier. He was
already perfectly happy and content doing exactly what he was doing. He was wiser than the businessman
when you listen to that story. So if you like this story, please do me a favor,
share it with somebody that you know, that you love, that would take something from this.
