Starting point is 00:01:21 coaching down for new members in February 1st, because I'm going to be just concentrating on the people who are in that group. All right. So today I'm going to be talking about other people's opinions and I guess more than anything else, you being a child and what you used to do when you were a kid. And to start off, I have a question to ask you, and I really want you to think about this. Do you ever miss being a kid? Do you ever feel the longing for, man, I wish I was a carefree kid again? What's the answer to that question? Because when we were kids, all we did was play.
Starting point is 00:01:57 We created, we sung, we painted, and we used our imagination. We were Batman or a fireman or we were Wonder Woman or Barbie for the ladies out there. And we didn't care what other people thought about us at all, right? We didn't care about other people's opinions because we were doing what we love to do and nothing else matters. And we didn't get depressed thinking about the past or anxious thinking about the future. No, we didn't care about any of that stuff. What we did was we cared about the present moment. We created, we did what we wanted to do, and we played all day long. And our creativity was actually the thing that was running us. Isn't it funny how that kind
Starting point is 00:02:38 of disappears over time once you integrate into society? Is that your creativity as a child is what's running you, but your creativity is what disappears as you get into society. So as a kid, everything was going from internal to external. Our creativity was in us and we put that out into the world. What made us happy was just this internal drive to do the things that we love to do. But as we get older, society tells us what we are and what we're not supposed to do. And we learn the rules and we learn that we're supposed to fit in or else. And we learn, we honestly learn arbitrary rules that are made up by people who are no smarter than you and I.
Starting point is 00:03:24 And we follow them. That's the crazy part. We follow rules that are made up by people who are no smarter than you and I. And we follow them. That's the crazy part. We follow rules that are made up by people that are no smarter than you and I. Because we want to fit in. We want to be like everybody else. We want people to like us. And we want people to approve of us. Right?
Starting point is 00:03:38 That is a tribal thing from thousands of years ago. And now our decisions are not based on what we love to do or what would make us happy. Our decisions are now based on what people think about us. So we've moved from what we love to do to who loves us. And it's not just relationships where we're searching for meaning. We're searching for meaning in our jobs. We're searching for meaning in our jobs. We're searching for meaning in our promotions, in the cars that we buy, in the houses that we buy, because it's got to be bigger, bigger, bigger, and nicer, and faster, and all of those things, and more luxurious.
Starting point is 00:04:15 We're searching for meaning in the clothes that we buy, and bottles at the club, right? Because we hope that those things will complete us, and that owning those things will make people like us. So now what happens is you're under the illusion that these outside things are what complete you. You're constantly thinking that you must acquire more money or more toys or promotions in order to be happy. And if you live your life that way, you will be miserable forever.
Starting point is 00:04:48 So your entire life has now shifted to external things trying to make you internally happy. But when you were a kid, what made us happy was internal things being put into the external world. When you were a kid, you weren't worrying about how to get the new car, the pay raise, or sitting in front of a computer for eight freaking hours trying to figure out how to do an Excel spreadsheet every single day. You're working on one person and one person only, you. And that made you happy. And if you think about it, the greatest humans to have ever lived on this planet, live the exact same way, the greatest comedians and speakers and actors and CEOs and everything, the greatest weren't slaving away, worrying about Excel spreadsheets. They had to get done.
Starting point is 00:05:37 No. What were they doing? They were working on themselves. They were working on their craft and they were working on making themselves better. They put their heads down and they worked on being the best that they could possibly be in their craft. And because of that, they became masters of their craft. They became amazing at what they do. They developed skills that made them stand out amongst everyone else. They became great. And that's why it's so amazing to watch these people in action. They are in flow.
Starting point is 00:06:07 They are doing what they've put 10,000 hours, 20,000 hours, countless hours into. And to watch them do what they do is the closest thing to God that humans will ever be. Because it looks effortless. They do these amazing things because it looks effortless. They do these amazing things and it looks effortless. And when you truly do something that you love and you get into the flow, there is something truly effortless about that. And by doing that, you're enjoying the process of working on yourself, which is in turn making you better, which is making you happier. And isn't that the actual goal of life? To do what you love to do
Starting point is 00:06:48 and to do that every single day. To go to bed every single night, a better version of yourself than when you woke up this morning. And some people might say, well, isn't that selfish to work on myself every single day? I have a family. I have children. Well, let me ask you this question. Don't you think that your children will grow up to be a better, more fulfilled human or humans if you have multiple ones? If they grow up with a mother or father that do what they absolutely love to do? Because they will do what you do. So they'll either follow in your footsteps of doing what they love or they'll follow in your footsteps of sitting behind an Excel spreadsheet for eight hours.
Starting point is 00:07:28 Because you have to do what makes you happy. What brings out the best version of yourself. Stop living your life thinking that all of these external things will create internal happiness and start focusing on internal happiness as the starting point and not the end point. And bring that internal happiness and your craft to the external world. So if you like this episode, please do me a favor.
