Welcome to the Mindset Mentor. I am your host Rob Dial. If you have not yet done so, hit
that subscribe button so that you never miss another podcast episode. And today is the
first day that we are going to have this be a daily podcast for the next two weeks. I'm
going to help you get a head start into your
New Year's resolutions into your 2020. And I'm going to be doing daily podcast episodes until
January 1st. Okay. So today I'm going to be talking about why you should stop setting New
Year's resolutions. Oh, you didn't think that I was going to be saying this, did you? You're like, Rob's telling me not to set New Year's resolutions?
No, I'm telling you not to set New Year's resolutions if one thing,
and I'm going to tell you what that one thing is.
And I want you to think about this.
How many times have you set a New Year's resolution goal and not hit it?
Think about that and be honest with yourself.
Think about that in your head.
Don't just listen to my words.
How many times have you set a goal, a new year's resolution goal
and not hit that goal? I bet you it's probably more times than actually hitting the goal, right?
You've probably set them and not hit them more than you have hit them. Now, this isn't me trying
to bring you down. This is me trying to be candid with you. If you know one
thing about my podcast, it's I don't bullshit you, right? I'm going to tell you how it is and the way
that it needs to be said. And I'm going to tell you bluntly. And what probably has happened is
that you have not hit your goals more than you've hit your goals, right? Now, I don't want you to
think that I don't like goals. I don't want you to think that I don't like New Year's resolutions.
I don't want you to think that I don't like goals.
I don't want you to think that I don't like New Year's resolutions.
I love goals.
I love New Year's resolutions.
But it's not about the goals.
It's not about the New Year's resolutions.
Do you know what it's about?
You.
It's about you.
You're not supposed to change your New Year's resolutions.
You're not supposed to change your goals.
If the problem is that you're not hitting your goals, it's not the goals.
It's you that is the problem. You must change yourself in order're not hitting your goals, it's not the goals. It's you that is the problem.
You must change yourself in order to start hitting your goals.
You know, Einstein says to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results is absolute insanity.
Well, think about that for a second.
You've been, you've been setting goals over and over and over again and go, well, I hope I do better this year.
That's kind of the idea that people have with New Year's resolutions. Well, you know what? I didn't
hit my New Year's resolutions last year. Hopefully I hit them this year. I didn't hit them two years
ago. Hopefully I hit them this year. I haven't hit them ever. Hopefully I hit them this year.
It's kind of like a red flag, isn't it? It's like if someone cheats on you over and over and over and over and over again,
and you just go,
well, hopefully they don't cheat on me next time.
No, you have to learn the actual patterns
and see the patterns that are happening.
If you're not hitting your goals,
it's because you need to change.
You need to change.
Your approach needs to change.
Do you wanna know what you need to
have in order to hit your goals? Number one, a plan. Number two, you have to take action. And
number three, you have to be consistent. People are very, very rarely consistent. You have to be
consistent with the action that you take. You set up the plan, you figure out what it is, you have
to be consistent, and you have to look at your goals every single day. That's part of the problem. One of the main reasons, if I'm being
completely honest with you, I've coached thousands of people over the years. One of the main reasons
why people don't hit their new year's resolutions goals. Do you want to know what it is? Cause they
forget about what they are. I can't tell you how many people I've talked to in October, November,
December. And I'm like, Hey, what were your new year's resolutions goals last year? And they're like, you know what? I don't even really know. And I remember because I seriously
remember the way I found out about all of this. And I kind of realized it. I had a friend that
was telling me her new year's resolutions goals. And, uh, there was three new year's resolutions
goals. And she was, this was probably about six years ago. And she was a little bit drunk because
it was on new year's Eve. She was a little bit drunk. She told me her six New Year's resolution goals. I was like, that's really cool.
Okay. Those are really great goals. And then I followed up with her about a month ago and I have,
I have a pretty good memory. I don't forget a whole lot. And I also don't think I was drinking
this night. So I was pretty sober. And she told me, she told me her goals, you know, about a month
before. And I followed up with a month later and I said, Hey, how are your New Year's resolutions
going? And she's like, Oh, um, I don't even really remember what they are.
I was like, are you kidding me?
Like, I remember what your goals are.
You don't even remember what your own goals are?
How do you think you're going to hit something if you don't know what it is?
And you have to realize that you have to plan it.
Number one, you have to decide.
You have to get very clear on what they are.
Number two, you have to plan out how you're going to do it.
Number three, you got to take action. Number four, you have to decide. You have to get very clear on what they are. Number two, you have to plan out how you're going to do it. Number three, you got to take action. Number
four, you got to be consistent. You got to consistently work at your goals every single
day. You got to write them down with pen and paper and you got to look at them every single
morning and every single evening. This is one of the main reasons why the Iron Mind 60 challenge
works so well is because you have 60 days to remind yourself every single day for the first
60 days. Because what happens most of the time is that people figure out what it is that they want,
and then they never actually remember what it is. They're like, oh yeah, you know what,
this is what I'm going to shoot for. And then they just realize a month, two months, three months
down the road that they're not on the path they want it to be, right? You've been setting goals,
thinking that you will do something different, but you're the same person. So you
have to personally change. And so what I want you to think about is this, what are the aspects of
yourself that need to change in order to hit your goals, right? Have you even figured out what your
New Year's resolutions goals are? Have you sat down and thought and wrote down with a pen and paper?
Hey, these are my New Year's resolutions. These are the things that I'm going to work for.
Have you thought about it? Because here's the thing, Harvard did a study and you've
probably heard me say this many times, but Harvard did a study in the seventies and they found out
that only 3% of their graduating class, they literally took the graduating master's class
and they found out that only 3% of them wrote down their goals. 3% wrote down
their goals with a pen and paper. They followed up with them 10 years later. And those 3% of people
were more successful than the other 97% combined. Let me say that again. The 3% of people that wrote down their goals were 10 times more successful than the other 97% combined.
Why is that? Because most people don't usually write down their goals. They don't figure what
they are. And when you don't write them down, they're just kind of abstract bouncing around
inside of your head. There's magic when you put pen to paper. You've heard me say it before.
So this is not me saying you don't need to set New Year's resolutions.
I want you to set New Year's resolutions.
I want you to set them big, bigger than you ever have.
And then when you write them down, I want you to look at them and I want you to think even bigger than that.
This isn't me saying I don't want you to set goals.
Of course I want you to set your goals.
But I want you to think about the person you that is setting the goals and what you have
done in the past, how you have done in the past,
how you have failed in the past, and how you are going to make sure that you come up with a plan
to get past the ways that you normally fail. That's the secret to hitting your goals. The
secret to hitting your goals is to look at who you've been in the past, find out what you need
to do to hit those goals, and then find out what you need to stop doing or start doing that you've done in the past
that'll help you get to where you need to be.
So it's not that I don't want you to set new resolutions.
I do.
But I want you to look at yourself first.
Look in the mirror and find out what do I need to do with myself?
What do I need to change with myself in order to hit these goals?
Because as Einstein said, don't forget about it.
What he said was that to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results
is insanity.
If you don't go into your 2020, a new year, a new decade without doing something different,
decade without doing something different, 2020 is going to look a lot like 2019 and 18 and 17,
16, 14, 15, 13, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, nine, eight. You know, it's going to look like every other year because you are the same person. That is why you need to push yourself and challenge yourself
to change so that you can be a different person going into this new year. So that's what I got
for you for today's episode. If you want more information on the Iron Mind 60 Challenge,
you're ready to change your life. You're ready to change 2020, making the best year of your life.
