Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor podcast. I am your host, Rob Dial.
And if you have not yet done so, hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another
podcast episode. And today is Thursday, which means it is the business edition of the Mindset
Mentor, which also means that I am with my business partner and best friend, Dean DeVries.
Dean, welcome to the podcast. Great to be here. My favorite day of the week.
And what we're going to talk about today is what we've learned, Dean and I, in coaching thousands of people and helping people grow businesses. And we're also going to talk about the number
one reason why we find people succeed as business owners, as entrepreneurs, as salespeople, and as just
normal everyday people as well, right?
Yeah, I love this conversation.
And the thing that we're going to talk about is probably not what most people are thinking.
Most people think that you have to be the most educated person or the most experienced
person.
We find that that's oftentimes the reason why people think that they can't succeed. And sometimes the reason why they don't even get started in what they
ultimately want to do with their life. And so, you know, experience is not the most important
thing. In fact, experience can work against you. And it's kind of like the, uh, the, the beginner's
mind versus the expert mind and having a beginner's mind, like that clean slate
of just open to all possibilities. That's actually a luxury when it comes to building a business.
And the reason why is because you're open, you're open to all possibilities versus the expert mind,
which is different than having an expertise, right? It's one thing to have an expertise and
to have data to support different decisions, but it's one thing to have an expertise and to have data to support
different decisions, but it's another thing to have the expert mind where you look at options
or look at ways to grow the business or start a business and immediately judge it and immediately
turn off those possibilities and have like these definitive predictions that, ah, that won't work. Or yeah,
I've, I've heard about that before that can't work for me. And, you know, I think that's,
that's one thing that a lot of people are held back by is that, you know, the truth is the world
is always changing and you have to be willing to change and transform with it. So the real reason why people succeed in, and this is like the X factor is
somebody's willingness to transform and most importantly, have the courage to step into the
unknown. Yeah. Yeah. That's a good point. A couple of things that you said there, you know, one of
the things that if you look at our business, the business that you and I run, you know, we've got
about 12 people that are full-time with us. We've got, you know, probably another 10 that are outsourced in some sort of
way. And, um, we have a very young company, not just the age of the company, but the age of the
average person in the company. Actually, you and I are the oldest people in the company at, you
know, I'm 35. We're the old guys. I'm the old guy at 35. Um, and everybody else is younger than us.
And we don't really look for people who have experience.
We look for people who are number one, really hard workers.
And number two, just learning to just willing to grow and willing to be sponges.
So when you say the beginner's mindset, like I have people, I know people who are broke
that won't allow themselves to have a beginner's mindset.
And I know people who are multi, multi,
multi millionaires, but are students all the time. And they're just sponges, right? So, so going back
to just that, like you were saying, you don't have to be educated. You don't have to have a ton of
experience. You just have to have the beginner's mind and open to everything. And the other thing
that you said is courage, right? Like I can fully relate to that. And some people may have heard me
say this before in the podcast before, but you know, for me, when I first started this business and it was just me
by myself, the podcast, and then growing the coaching business, I was scared shitless. I left
a job where I was making a couple hundred thousand dollars a year to literally make nothing at that
point. And for a few months I was making nothing. Like I had a little bit of money in the bank,
but I was making nothing and nothing and nothing. And there was the thought that came into my head of, should I go
back to what I was doing before? Like, should I go back? Like I'm in sales and I can always find a
sales job because good sales people always needed. And, um, and I remember my, I was, it was, let me
see, it was, uh, November of 2015. And I was back home in Florida for Thanksgiving. And my sister
was like, Hey, did I ever show you the box of dad's stuff? And I was like home in Florida for Thanksgiving. And my sister was like, Hey,
did I ever show you the box of dad's stuff? And I was like, no, I don't think so. My sister had
this box of all of my dad's stuff. It was a watch of his, it was glasses. It was a couple of t-shirts
of his. And then it was these letters. And one thing I don't talk about a whole lot is my dad
was in jail for multiple DUIs when I was younger and wrote a bunch of letters to us. And one of them was a
letter to my sister on her birthday. Mike Dow was a great writer and not a skillset that I got from
him, that's for sure. And he was this great writer and he wrote this amazing stuff. And in the very
last line before he signed off in the letter said, I hope you live your life with courage, love,
and laughter. And I read it and I was in such a fearful state. And we'll talk about fear in a
little while. I was in such a fearful state of, I think I should go back and work for someone else
again. And that word courage just like stood off the page to me. I was like, I need to get this
tattooed on my body. And literally the very first tattoo I ever got was my dad's handwriting on my
arm blown up. And it literally says, live your life with courage, love, and laughter, because I wanted to tattoo it on my body that no matter what happens, no matter how bad the fear
gets, I will not go back to working for someone else. And I will step into being as courageous
as I possibly can be. Yeah. I love that. Thanks for sharing that with, with everybody. And I,
you know, I know that story and it's so powerful because man, courage, that's the, that's the juice. Courage is, is the thing that, and that,
that is worthy of being tattooed on your body. Because if you live a life of courage and like
another word that, that really resonates with me when it comes to courage is boldness, you know,
or, or bigness, you know, like just giving ourselves the permission to be
courage, to be bold, to be big. That's, that's what makes somebody successful. And, you know,
the thing that, that a lot of people get hung up on is that people crave so much certainty.
Like we, we can't, we're kind of hardwired for it in certain ways, but we crave this certainty,
but before taking action.
Like, you know, and, and I know I've definitely been there before and we see this also time and
time again is the reason why people don't just be courageous and be bold is because they're waiting
and waiting and waiting. And ultimately their, their opportunities pass them by because they're
waiting for that certain moment. They're waiting for that perfect moment where everything is just green lights all the way down. It's like, okay, now, now it's time
to go. Now it's safe to go. Yeah. Right. And like this, this idea of safety is uncertainty. It's
kind of like, you know, I'm a parent, I'm a dad and I've learned so much from my kids and especially Denver. He's, he's almost two years old
and there's a, you know, there, there's moments where I'm like genuinely concerned. Like actually
earlier today he was, he was about to jump off of like a six foot like sand dune, but it was like a
steep, it was like, uh, i just saw it going really really badly
but there's also like an element of like man you know this this anxiousness and this this desire
for his safety actually takes away some of the adventure if i like let that part be overexpressed
so it's like we go we go through the entire house, cleaning out this perfect little area.
We baby proof it.
We have these rules where it's like, okay, you can go here.
You can't go here.
And we make it really safe.
But it robs him of the opportunity to make mistakes and to learn.
And I look at like the journey, especially of being a business owner, is we've got to make mistakes.
That's where the biggest
gifts are, because if we don't make mistakes, we don't build an awareness of how we are,
who we are in these different situations. So like, you know, who are you when things get tough?
Who are you when your vision isn't clear? Who are you when your experience is different than
your expectations? You know, who are you when, when is different than your expectations?
You know, who are you when, when you run out of resources or you don't have enough resources?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And that's, that's a good point with the, the resources side.
One of the things that we always say is, is, is it that you don't have enough resources or you're not being resourcefulness?
You know, like I, I would love somebody that's just resourceful.
Like, do you not have enough resourcefulness is, is, is the key.
Like if, if, if you're not, it's not that you don't have the resources, it's that you're
not being resourceful to find those resources for whatever it is.
And, you know, going back to what you were saying a minute ago with, with a child, the
thing that's funny about children and walking and all that stuff that that's, that's always
so comical to me is that
at no point in time, like I've obviously Denver was over my house not long ago. He can walk now,
but at no point in time did Denver ever go, yeah, maybe this walking thing isn't for me.
Right. So children, children don't give up. And so it's really odd for me to think like
giving up is actually a learned thing. Like no child is like, ah, yeah, this, this walking thing's not
for me. Right. But we're like, oh, I've been running this business for the past, you know,
60 days and I'm not bringing as much profit as I want to. Maybe this isn't for me. It's like, no,
you just haven't been walking long enough. You haven't been trying long enough. And it's the
idea of like failing forward. Like the only way to learn how to walk is to what fall a whole bunch of times
fall a lot. Right. And it's, it's the idea of not having to always play it safe,
you know, making sure that you, that you go, you know what, this isn't exactly what I,
what everybody else has been doing. I've never, I've never done this before. And I feel
uncomfortable doing this thing that I'm going to do, but that is something that you have to do. And I had a conversation with one of our team members earlier this week. And I feel uncomfortable doing this thing that I'm going to do, but that is something
that you have to do. And I had a conversation with one of our team members earlier this week.
And he's like, he's like, man, you know what I realized watching you, watching you work
is you basically just try everything and see what works. And I was like, yeah, that's literally what
being an entrepreneur is like. I am under complete awareness that the majority of the time, I'm just
going to mess a whole lot of stuff up and eventually something's going to stick. Like I'm just going to throw a whole bunch of
crap at the wall. Something's going to stick. And when it does stick, that's what I'm going to see
what works. Like, so for me, if we're, let's go to marketing, for instance, if we want to talk
about marketing, like I'm obsessed with trying to figure out different ways on Facebook and
different ways on Instagram. And I just love seeing what works and what doesn't work. So I'll try this type of post and this type of post and this one and this one and this one and
this one. I'll try a bunch of different ones and then just see what works. And then I'm like, huh,
it looks like this one did better than the other ones. So let me go ahead and see if I were to post
other things exactly like this, maybe this will work. And so if somebody goes to my Instagram,
you can see that my Instagram is quite different than the average person's Instagram. There's different things that we try
out. But the reason why is because it goes back to the thought of ready, fire, aim, which is the
way that I run the business, the way that you and I run the business, the way that we teach other
entrepreneurs and business owners to run their businesses is that people want, like you said,
the certainty of this is going to work before they take any
action. And that's ultimately completely ridiculous because there is no certainty.
You don't know unless you try. You can't walk until you fall. And so you literally have to
go out there and go, I don't know if this is going to work. I have no certainty on it,
but let me just go ahead and throw some stuff at the wall and just see if it happens to stick.
And eventually you find something that sticks. and the creative Honda says that success is sex success is 99% failure.
You just got to succeed one time.

Yeah, there's a lot there. Yeah. One of the things I really appreciate is, you know,
over the last couple of years, we've really built something special. And, you know, if the last couple of years we've we've really built something special and you know if i don't mind saying so myself we're pretty successful at this thing but what i've also
realized is that the level of success that we have is also perfectly matched to the long catalog of
all the things that we screwed up in the process so the screw-ups are about the screw-up list is
about 10 times longer than the success list. Yeah.
And, you know, the truth is that following the rules, staying in the box and staying safe, you know, that is if we play it safe, quote unquote, I'm like doing air quotes right now. Like if we're playing it safe our entire life and safety is like what everybody thinks that you should do.
And the thing that we're like indoctrinated to do, like go to college, get a job, not saying
that those things aren't, you know, aren't a path, but if it's not like fully resonance in
resonance with who you really are, that might not be your safest bet, but the safe, the safe bet
is robbing, robbing us from the adventure of really getting what we want.
And in fact, if you play your life, if you play it safe your entire life, you stand no chance in getting what you want and making a huge impact and really making a meaningful and authentic difference.
And, you know, you shared this quote with me, um, uh, actually not that long ago.
If you risk nothing in your life, you actually are risking everything. And I love that quote
because it's, it speaks to, if you're risking nothing, if you're just like staying in this
comfort zone, you're actually risking your biggest possibilities, your highest potential.
And so, you know, some people kind of get stuck in this, this mindset of, well, if I should be
doing this, I shouldn't be afraid. And that's like a total false judgment because the fear doesn't
go away. You and I can speak to that really clearly because there's like, there's times
where you and I like are on the verge of like crying where it's
like, man, we are terrified. Right. But at the same time, it's also, you know, it's, it's us
being courageous where it's like, yeah, but we're going to do it anyway. Right. So the fear doesn't
go away. The courage just gets bigger. Right. And so, you know, that's the, the biggest distinct
distinction is that successful people are terrified all the time.
They're uncomfortable all the time.
It's always going to be there.
You can't change it.
But the choice is, are you going to listen to the fear or are you going to listen to the deepest truth, the deepest passion and listen to the voice of courage?
Yeah.
Yeah, that's such a good point.
You know, it's like if you think about that, where people are just there, they they think that, oh man, you know, that successful entrepreneur, they must just be,
they must be so confident all the time. They must have no fear, right? And it's not even the case.
It's that, that you just get used to the fear of the unknown, kind of just being omnipresent.
Like it's just always there. So I think that when someone goes
and starts a business or decides to become an entrepreneur, the fear of the unknown or the
fear of uncertainty, the fear of possibly going broke or whatever it is that might pop up for,
for an entrepreneur or a business owner, they get to the point where they're like, oh my gosh,
this is, I'm not used to this. Just part of the deal. Right. Yeah. Like, but when you're brand
new, you don't even know. You're just like, like I was feeling when I had to get the tattoo. Right. I didn't realize that with being an
entrepreneur, like the fear was, was there of things can go wrong. There's people that I have
to pay whenever I get people on payroll and there's, you know, bills that have to be paid
and all of this stuff. And that fear, you just get used to it being around. And it's kind of like,
you know, I don't really notice, I don't really notice the temperature
of the room unless it gets really hot or really cold. Right. And it's kind of like just the
temperature of the room is set to 72. It's kind of like the omnipresent fear. And I'm a little
bit terrified. I'm a little bit comfortable all the time. It's just kind of there. And that's
just basically the way that being entrepreneur is. Then that's, that's okay. Yeah. And being an entrepreneur,
like you, you actually know you're on the right track when you have some fear, right? When you
have that discomfort where it's like, okay, yep, that's there. That's how you, that's like a clue
of like, Oh, I must be on the right track. And if you're not scared or if you're like, not,
not terrified, that's when you should really be concerned when you're too comfortable,
right? When you're, when you're like, ah, yeah, this is, this is pretty easy. That's when you
should be really concerned because that is, that's a journey that's not testing you. It's not,
it's, it's not giving you the clue of, Hey, this is where your highest potential is. And
your highest potential always be matched with the level of boldness level of courage.
And your highest potential will always be matched with the level of boldness, level of courage.
And so, Rob, you know, let's talk about, you know, how to actually cultivate courage.
Because I know this is something that you and I, we practice a lot.
We challenge each other on a lot.
So, you know, what are your thoughts on cultivating courage?
Yeah.
So the first thing that you have to realize whenever you're talking about fears is I always say there's a difference in type of fear. So when I say, what are your fears to somebody? They might say, you know, the fear of being rejected, the fear of failing, the fear of success, the fear of not being loved, the fear of being a bad parent. Like there's so many fears that are in there. Right. And I think that that the word is actually incorrect. I don't think that it should be fear, but we're going to use that.
Let me actually tell you the difference, okay?
I'm going to tell you why I don't think fear is actually a good word, but we're going to have to use it just because that's what's so common.
There are intellectual fears and there are primal fears, and there's a big difference
between the two of them.
An intellectual fear is other people's opinions.
Oh, what is, what is, you know, my mom going to think of me if I put up
this post about how I want to be a life coach or what's my, you know, my cousin going to think of
me or what's the, the, my friends from high school going to think of me if I make this post on
Facebook talking about how I'm going to open my first nail salon or whatever it is that that's,
those are all intellectual fears. The fear of, of success, the fear of failure, the fear of judgment,
the fear of opinions, right? Those are intellectual fears. A primal fear is what you're actually
really supposed to be afraid of, right? Because a primal fear, death is attached to a, death is
always a possibility and a primal fear, right? If I'm walking around outside in the dark and I hear
rustling in the bush, my body is going to have a physical reaction to that. What's interesting
though, is because of the fact that we don't have to worry about those things anymore. We don't have
to worry about walking outside of our house and being attacked by a, you know, a saber tooth tiger
or anything like that. That part of our brain, the amygdala still exists. And so it creates fears
for us. And so your brain is a fear
mechanism. It will create fears in front of you. You just got to say, is this an intellectual fear
or is this a primal fear? And to make it even, even, you know, more blatant, I don't even like
to call them intellectual fears. I like to call them, I like to call them scaries. I'm like,
oh, these are, this is my scaries. What if I put up this post and someone's like, I don't like your
post. This isn't a post that I like. Like, you know what I mean? Like, like, fuck that. Like, that's not even a fear. That's,
that is a, that's a scary, right? There's no death attached to some hater coming out and saying that
they don't like your Facebook posts. So like, let's get very clear on the fact that if you're
going to cultivate courage and you're going to talk about fear, is it an intellectual fear?
AKA, is it a scary or is it a primal fear of like, holy shit, I'm actually about to die, right?
Because primal fears are very, very, very rarely going to happen to you nowadays, right?
It's not a physical stepping into danger, right?
Primal fear has death attached to it.
And so that's the first part of cultivating fear is becoming very,
cultivating courage is becoming very clear of,
is it actually fear? Is it danger? or is it an intellectual scary for you dude i'm dying over here because of the scary uh literally like i'm actually imagining uh there's it's like a split
screen like on on the left side there's like oh'm going to put up this post and that's scary versus like somebody that's
like, there's a saber tooth tiger in front of them. It's like, that's scary.
Let's run. You know? And it's like this, it's like a true danger.
You've got to take your fear and realize that there's actually no real danger
attached to it. You know? Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Yeah.
And the other thing that comes up for me too, is that, you know, for,
especially for these intellectual fears and maybe even for primal fears too. I mean, if you live in
the jungle long enough, I would imagine that you develop that muscle of courage, but especially
for these intellectual fears of just like going out and doing something, the more you do something,
the more courage that you will have. It's kind of like a muscle that, you know, when you exercise that muscle of courage, that's the, the fear doesn't have as much power. And so all, and we don't have to be
attached to the fear completely going away, because honestly, that's probably unrealistic.
We always have fear. The fear is always there, but as long as we can allow that, that voice of
courage to be louder, it's, it's then easier to listen to and so like the
thing that that comes up for me is you know when when we listen to the voice of fear like how does
that cause me to show up well oftentimes it caused me to show up sort of like depressed uh not not
not like believing in myself uh thinking you know thinking about the worst thing that can happen. And then
when I think about like the possibilities that exist, if I listened to the voice of courage,
I feel like I like just by, by, by saying that I I'm standing up taller. I feel like I feel more
powerful. I feel more, more in tune with my greatest possibilities. And so I think that's,
that's a really important point
is that the more we do something, the more courage that becomes available because we're
exercising the muscle. And you know, the, the only way that fear will control us is if we're
focusing on our fears more than our courage and being intentional about exercising that muscle,
but also, and you kind of brought
this up earlier is when we fantasize about that fear actually becoming real, when we fantasize
about the fear actually happening. And this is, this is also like a really, you know, scientifically
there's, there's a lot of studies suggesting that anything that we can visualize in our mind,
our body doesn't actually know the difference. So we can visualize, like I can visualize eating like a really juicy steak right now. And I,
my body is like, Oh yeah. You know? And like we can do that with anything we can, we can visualize
whatever we visualize, we can actually attune our body to feel the feelings of being in that situation. So
when we fantasize about the fears becoming real, our body literally feels like it's in danger,
even though it just might be scary. Right. Yep. Yep. Yeah. And, and ultimately what it comes down
to, and the thing that I think we should really leave everybody with is that ultimately fear is
a choice, you know, or scaries are a choice.
They're a choice, you know, and as you said, we can visualize, we can fantasize about the fears actually happening and putting our body through that.
Or we can fantasize about actually succeeding about our business doing well, you know, and asking ourself more empowering questions instead of being like, oh, well, what if I fail with my business? Well, what if I succeed? What if everything goes right?
What if I become massively successful and influential and help change the world or
change my children's life? Right. Think about that. Like, is it possible for all of the opposite
of the things that you fear to happen? Yeah, absolutely. Well, you know, what would that
feel like to believe that? You know, how would you show up? How would that cause you to to happen? Yeah, absolutely. Well, you know, what would that feel like to believe that,
you know, how would you show up? How would that cause you to show up? If you believed
that like deep down in your soul, that everything good that could happen to you will happen to you.
How would you show up differently versus believing that the bad things are going to happen?
Right. What could, what could be possible when you show up that way? So the thing that you got to
think of is like, what is your choice? You're going to choose fear or are you going to choose
courage? That's the difference between a successful person, unsuccessful person is usually
an unsuccessful person caves into the feeling of fear and a successful person usually steps into
courage and decides, you know what? I feel the fear. It doesn't feel very good, but I'm going to step into this unknown anyways, because I know that my greatest potential,
my greatest life, the life for my family, the life for the world, the money that I can make,
the impact that I could have is on the other side of fear. And the thing that I'll leave you with
is one of my favorite quotes from Will Smith. And he says, I think that God puts everything
great on the other side of fear. So next time you feel the fear, step into it and realize that on the other side of that is
everything amazing for you. So that's what we got for you for today's episode. If you love this

than doing absolutely nothing.
Nothing on the beach,
nothing by the pool,
walking kind of nowhere and chatting about nothing. Nothing on the beach, nothing by the pool. Walking kind of nowhere and chatting about nothing.
As an Expedia member, you can save up to 30% when you add a hotel to your flight.
