Welcome to today's episode if you have not yet done so hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another episode.
And today I'm going to talk about the four steps to change your life.
I know I'm going to talk about the most stereotypical crap that a quote unquote motivational speaker or whatever the hell category
people want to put me into. I'm going to talk about the most stereotypical thing that I could
speak about considering that I'm in the personal development category. I'm in the motivational
speaker category. I'm going to talk about the four steps to changing your life. I'm going to make
this as simple as possible for everyone that's out there so that
if you've never, if this is your first time hearing my voice, if you've never heard anything
about personal development, you're going to go, oh yeah, damn, that makes a lot of sense. I think
I can do that. And just so you know, like I don't, I have nothing against motivational speakers. I
just don't consider myself a motivational speaker because I'm honestly not trying to motivate you.
What I'm trying to do is I'm trying to get you to
get off your butt to actually change your life. I'm not trying to sit here and go, Hey, you know,
you can do it. Go ahead and do it. Like I'm, that's not what I'm trying to do. I'm trying
to get you to get, get off your ass and really start getting stuff done and to try to give you
the tips, the tools, the strategies to actually do it. So nothing wrong with motivational speakers.
I just don't put myself in that category. So let's talk about the four steps to changing your life. If you have a pen
and paper right now, it'd be a really good time to go run and get them. Cause the first one that
you need to know and you need to have step number one is do you need to have a goal, right? And
you're going to listen to this and you're going to be like, damn, this is so simple, but this is so
profound that when it's just this simple. Okay. And I'm going to go through, damn, this is so simple, but this is so profound when it's just this simple.
Okay. And I'm going to go through each of these four different things. Number one,
you have to have a goal. Here's the thing that I realized with people in goals. I've coached thousands of people over the past 15 years. And what I have realized is that people do not get
clear on their goals. They just don't. They say, I want to lose weight. Okay. Well, that's a really
crappy goal, if I'm being honest
with you. And the reason why is because if you say your goal for next year is that you want to
lose weight. Well, if you lose one pound, well, guess what? You've hit your goal. But I'm assuming
if your goal is that you want to lose weight, you don't want to lose just one pound, right?
You want to lose 10, 20, 50 pounds, whatever it is. And so you've got to get very
clear on what it is. The way that I always describe it, you've heard me describe it many
times before, is I live in Austin. If I'm going to go visit my friend Mike who lives in Houston,
I could go and get into my car and type in Houston and I would get to Houston,
but I would not get to Mike. There's 5.4 million people that live in
Austin. I'm sorry. They live in Houston. That's, there's a pretty good chance. I'm never going to
find him if I just go knock on every single door. But if I, if the more clear I get with my GPS,
if I go and put in my GPS, you know, one, two, three, whatever Hill street, one, two, three, whatever, Hill Street, one, two, three, Hill Street,
let's say he lives there. There's a pretty good chance that I'm going to get exactly to Mike.
And the reason why is because I was very clear with my destination. That's what you have to do
with your goals. You have to be very clear with what your destination is. And you don't have to
just think it. You have to literally put it down on a piece of paper.
And this was a study. There was a study that was done in the seventies in Harvard with their MBA,
graduating MBA class. And they found out in the seventies, they asked, you know, all of them
what they did with their goals. If they wrote their goals down, if they just knew their goals,
if they had goals, only 3% of them actually had written their goals down. So 3% of the graduating class with their MBA
at Harvard wrote their goals down. 10 years later, they followed up with everybody and they found out
that that 3% was more successful than the 97% combined. Let me say that again real quick.
97% combined. Let me say that again real quick. 3% of people were more successful than 97% of them combined. And they were just, the only difference at that point in time was that they
had written down their goals. So the more clear that you can get on your goal, the more that you
can write it down and say by, you know, instead of saying, I want
to lose weight, you need to say, I want to lose 27 pounds by December 31st, 2020. And I want to weigh,
you know, 174 pounds. And I want to be at 10% body fat. And I've printed a picture of the person who
I think has the perfect
body. And this is what I'm working for, right? Do you see the difference between those two goals
between I want to lose weight in between knowing exactly what it is that you're shooting for
exactly with extreme clarity, what it is that you're shooting for. There's a massive difference
between the two. And I guarantee you this, both people can hit their goals and both people probably will hit their goals. But one
person's going to lose one or two pounds and the other person's going to get the perfect buy that
they've won their entire life. So which one do you want to be? You can't hit a target that you
can't see. So figure out what your freaking goal is, get super clear with it,
and write that damn thing down so that you have something to look at every single day.
So that is step number one, is you need to get clear on your goal. Next, step number two,
is you need to be intentional with every single day. This is where most people, if I'm being honest
with you, this is where most people really fall off. They don't know that they need to be intentional with
every single day. One of the things that I've really learned the most over my personal development
journey, my spiritual journey, my plant medicine journey is the power of setting an intention,
of going into something with the intention behind it. And what do I mean by intention?
Well, now that you know your goal,
you know what it is that you're trying to hit, you need to wake up every single day, listen to me,
every single day with intention of what it is that needs to be accomplished for that day,
what it is that you're working for in the end result that you're eventually going to get to.
You need to have intention for every single day. And if're eventually going to get to. You need to have intention for
every single day. And if you really want to get advanced, you need to have intention for
every single thing that you do. Intention is key. A lot of people start to figure out their goals
and they start to write down their goals and they start to work at them for a little while.
And then what happens? They fall off and they don't know what happened. Oh man, what happened? I thought I was doing so well
at my New Year's resolutions. What the hell happened to my New Year's resolutions? I'll
tell you what happened. What happened was that you didn't wake up every single day and focus
on that one goal and that one goal only. You didn't put all of your intention. You didn't
wake up and say, okay, my goal is that I need to do this. I need to lose 27 pounds by the end of the year.
My intention for today is that I need to eat this, this, and this. I need to eat as healthy
as possible. I need to drink as much water as possible. And after I get done with work,
I need to go and do a 45 minute workout. And this is what that workout's going to look like.
Then when I come home, I will not have a glass of wine.
I will not have a beer.
I will go ahead and I will sit there and I will drink the water that I need to,
and I will have a healthy dinner as well.
And then maybe what I'll do instead of watching Netflix for 30 minutes
is I'm going to go for a walk around the house or around the neighborhood for 30 minutes.
Do you see how that works? Do you see the difference of the power of the intention
that you're going into each day? You have to remind yourself. Here's the thing.
Humans, we're all super smart, but let's be real. We got a lot of stuff that's going on.
We have messages and notifications and people and kids screaming and things happening all of the time.
And if we don't constantly remind ourselves what it is that we're working towards,
why we're working towards it, and exactly what we need to do to conquer today,
then we might not hit it.
And that's just the truth.
So you need to be very intentional with every single day of exactly what it is that you're
working for.
Make a list of the things that need to be accomplished today.
Make a list of the things that you need to do.
Wake up and remind yourself.
You read your journal as to why you're working towards that goal.
You need to be intentional with everything that you do.
So that's step number two.
Step number three is obvious, but for some reason,
people forget it. You need to take action. You need to get off your ass and you need to do
something, right? There's a lot of people that believe in the law of attraction. I believe in
the law of attraction, but I also believe in the second law that is attached to the law of
attraction, and that's the law of action. The universe is just
not going to come through and save you. The universe will reward those who are daring,
who go out and actually work for the things that they want. I believe in the law of attraction,
but I believe that the second part that's often left out is the law of action. You got to get
your ass up. You got to work towards what it is that you want. And you got to freaking move towards that thing.
So you need to know your goal, right?
You need to know the goal.
You need to know the intention.
And then you need to have the action working towards it, right?
You can't say, oh, I'm going to lose 27 pounds.
And then you don't eat healthy.
You don't take that action.
You still eat the same crap and you don't go to the gym.
You don't take that action. You have to put the action in. Okay. So you got goal,
you got intention, you got action. And the fourth thing, and a lot of people leave this one out as Let me say this again. Time, slow and steady wins the race. Okay. Slow and steady wins the race because we live in a world where I can literally immediately find any answer to anything that I
want. You know, one of my favorite things to do when I'm talking with people about this is this,
you know, there was a time I remember I'm old enough to remember a time when I'm talking with people about this is this, you know, there was a time,
I remember, I'm old enough to remember a time when I was sitting around my friends and going,
man, I wonder how far the sun is from the earth. And then we'd be like, well,
we can go to the library. And then we'd go to the library and we'd have to go and look through the
encyclopedias, right? Or find a book. And
hopefully that encyclopedia that you need with the S, you know, the R S T U encyclopedia, hopefully
that one was there and it wasn't rented out. But now we live in a time where I can go, Hey Siri,
how far is the sun from the earth? According to universetoday.com,
the average distance of the earth from the sun
is about 149.6 million kilometers,
which is also referred to as one astronomical unit AU.
So that's immediate.
Life didn't used to be that way for me.
Even when I was a child in my lifetime,
it wasn't that immediate.
But we have this sense of we immediately need exactly what it is that we need now. And I'm going to tell you,
I'm going to be honest with you. If you're working towards the perfect life, you're not going to have
the perfect life right away. It's like Tony Robbins says, most people overestimate what they
can do in a year, but they underestimate what they can do in a decade. Let me give you a perfect
example. And this is not me tooting my own horn. So please don't take it that way.
But I remember when I first started my podcast, you know, it's been about four and a half years
that I've had the podcast. And I remember there were so many people because I met a ton of people,
a thing called podcast movement right before the podcast launched. And as I was launching the
podcast, I met a ton of
people that were at this, this convention is podcasting convention and tons of them had
podcasts and they were just starting podcasts and all that stuff. And the average podcast
lives for seven episodes, right? We're over 700 episodes on this podcast alone because I knew that slow and steady wins the race.
I know out of all of the people that I met who had a podcast at that time or who started a podcast,
one of them, one, still has a podcast besides me. One of them still has a podcast besides me.
I know that if I just slow and steady wins the race, I'll eventually
win. I'll eventually figure it out. So will you. It's the exact same thing. You know, I remember
that when I first started the podcast, everybody kept saying, how are you going to monetize it?
How are you going to make money? How are you going to monetize? How are you going to make money?
And I just said to everybody, listen, I don't care about making money from it. I know I'll
eventually make money. I'll figure out how to make money as you know, doing coaching and doing
all the stuff that I want. Like I'll, I'll figure out how to make money down the road. But my main
thing is I just want to grow and impact as many people as possible. Right. And I didn't try to
make any money off the podcast for eight months. And for some people, everybody thought I was
crazy. Oh my God. Well, how are you going to pay the podcast
and how are you going to get all the stuff and the production
and you got to put it up on the RSS feed and Libsyn, all these things.
I was like, I'll pay for it out of pocket.
I'll buy all of the equipment I need.
I'll buy everything that I need.
I'll pay for it out of pocket because I just have this feeling
that eventually it's going to work out the way that I want, right?
And then four and a half years later, I built a multi-million dollar business.
And once again, it's not me tooting my horn.
It's just that great things take time.
It took four and a half years for me to get to the point where this podcast and my Facebook
and my Instagram and my coaching business is a multi-million dollar company.
That doesn't happen overnight.
But everybody thinks,
I want to make a million dollars year one. Well, I'll be honest with you. I didn't make a million
dollars year one, but I knew slow and steady wins the race. There's a reason why the tortoise and
the hare was taught to us as children, because great things take time. So slow down and just
know what it is that you're working towards.
Because there's four steps to hitting your goals and getting anything that you want in life.
Number one is you need to know what the goal is.
You need to get very clear on it.
Number two is you have to be intentional every single day with your life and what you're trying to get out of each day.
Number three, you have to get your ass up and take action. And number four, you have to allow time for you to be able to build this.
So that's what I got for you for today's episode. If you love this episode,
please share with someone that you know and love. And I'm going to leave you the same way I leave
you every single episode. Make it your mission to make someone else's day better. I appreciate you
and I hope that you go out and you have an amazing day.
