everything that we put out here. Today, I'm going to be diving into the seven steps to accomplish
any goal that you set for yourself. A lot of episodes we've been doing recently have been a
lot of mindset, have been a lot of self-reflection, understanding yourself. This one's going to be
more strategy. And we're about halfway through the year at this point right now. And so my question
to you is how are those New Year's resolutions doing? Do you remember those things that you said
a few months ago? You know, how are they going? Good? Bad? Did you forget about them? Are you
exactly in the same place that you were a few months ago?
Or are you a completely different person?
Are you halfway to accomplishing your New Year's Resolutions goals?
And so no matter where you are, I love to go through this.
I've done a version of this episode a few times over the past nine, ten years at this point.
But I think it's really important for us to go, okay, let's self-assess.
Let's see how we are with our goals right now. Let's see where we're sitting with those New Year's resolutions
and realize we have about six months until the end of this year. How do I make sure that no matter
how the first half of this year is gone, I'm still going to accomplish the goals that I want. I'm
still going to get the body that I want. I'm still going to make the money that I want. I'm going to
have the happiness that I want. I'm going to be able to take the trips that I want. Okay. And so we're going to go through the
six steps or seven steps. The first six steps are actually not mine. They're from my favorite book,
Think and Grow Rich. But it is Think and Grow Rich is specifically around money. We're going
to be around anything that you want. And then the seventh tip in order to get there and hit
your goals is mine that I just threw in there for you. Cool? So let's go ahead and let's dive in,
right? Step number one, and the way that he says it inside of Think and Grow Rich is to fixate your
mind on exactly what it is that you want. It is not sufficient to merely say, I want to make a
lot of money, but define the amount that you want. So if we take
this and kind of switch it over to anything in life, not just money, you need to get very clear
on exactly what your goal is. Like, I mean, be very, very crystal clear. If you explained it to
a five-year-old, your five-year-old would get it. Because one of the things that I find with people
when they set goals is they set very, very vague goals, not because they're doing it on purpose, but because
they've never actually been shown exactly how to set their goals. And so a lot of people are like,
my New Year's resolution, my back half of the year resolution is to lose weight. Okay, well,
if you lose one pound, you accomplish your goal. That's probably not what you wanted though. If
you're like, ah, it's to make more money. Okay. Well, if you make one more dollar, then you accomplished your
goal, but I'm sure your goal is not to make $1. And so instead of saying it's to lose weight,
it would be in the back half of this year, I want to lose 10 pounds. I want to weigh 185 pounds and I want to be at 7% body fat. And here is a printout of
the picture of the body that I want. This is the man or the woman that has the body that I want by
the end of this year. And that's what I'm shooting for. And I actually printed out a picture of my
face and I taped it on this person's face so I can visualize it every single day. And so you get
very, very crystal clear on exactly what is it
you're trying to hit. Instead of saying, hey, I want to make more money, you're going to say,
hey, I want to make in the back half of this year $65,000. And you know the exact thing that you
want. Instead of saying, I want to be happier, the hell does that mean? What does happiness mean to
you? How would you know that you're happier? And what would that look like if it was expressed in your life? Right? So you want to figure out and get very, very clear. The better
that you can see the target, the more likely that you are to hit that target. And so that's the
thing is you got to get very, very clear on exactly what it is that you want. The second thing, which
is probably my favorite out of all of these, is to decide what you intend to give up in return for
hitting that goal. If you're saying yes to something, you're saying no to something else.
If you're saying yes to losing 10 pounds, you're saying no to a lot of things. You're probably
saying no to drinking alcohol on the weekends. Maybe you have a 12-pack every single weekend.
You're probably going to have to say no to a few 12-packs. If you're saying yes to losing weight, you're probably going to have to say no to sleeping
in some nights or some mornings because you need to wake up and go to the gym.
You're probably going to have to say no to being lazy.
You're probably going to have to say no to a lot of different things.
In order to get something that you've never had, you're going to have to do things you've
never done, and you're going to have to do things you've never done.
And you're going to need to give up certain things in your life. You might have to give up
potato chips and not buy them for the rest of this year. You might have to give up the carbs
that you're eating. You might have to give up ice cream. And just figure out if you're going to get
X, you're going to have to give up Y. What is the
Y that you're going to have to give up? And so if you're going to get something, you're going to
have to give something up in return. What is it? You know, if you want to make more money, you know,
you need to make that $65,000 by the end of this year, extra $65,000 from now until the end of this
year, but you've only made $30,000 so far this year,
well, then you're going to have to give something up. Maybe you're going to have to give up very
specific excuses. Maybe you're going to have to give up allowing yourself to come up short. Maybe
you're going to have to give up your fears of being hung up on when you make your cold calls,
whatever it might be. So you have to, number two, number one,
get very clear on exactly what it is that you want. And number two, you have to determine what you intend to give up in order to achieve that goal. Number three is to establish a definite
date of when you will hit that goal. So for some of you, it might be December
31st at the end of this year. For some of you, it might be three months from now. You need to give
yourself an exact date, right? Because a goal without a deadline is just a dream. So, okay,
I know what it is that I want. I know what I'm going for and I need to hit it by this date.
You know, there's always the phrase, I can't remember what it is,
but if you give yourself three months to do something,
it'll take three months.
If you give yourself three days to do something,
it'll take three days.
If you give yourself three hours, it'll take three hours.
So establish a definite date
of when you have to hit this by
and put it somewhere so that you see it every single day.
Every single day, you're gonna hit that goal.
You know, I remember in 2017
when my goal was to
move to Italy with my girlfriend at the time, now my wife, we wanted to be in Italy for six months.
I wrote on everywhere. I put it literally everywhere that I possibly could. I put on
the background of my phone. I put it on my mirror. So when I was brushing my teeth,
after I went to the bathroom, every single time I would see it. And it was by, and this was, I put up on January 1st, 2017, and it was by July 1st, 2017, I will
be living in Italy. And so it was everywhere. So I couldn't forget about it. Okay. So that's number
three is to figure out the definite date. And then number four, now that we know what we want,
now that we know when we want to get it and we know what we're going to give up in order to get there, now we need to make a plan for exactly how we're going
to get there. And we need to follow that plan. But we can't follow a plan if we don't have one.
And so what is your exact plan in order to achieve what it is that you want? And then what you need
to do is begin, as he says inside the book, begin at once. If you put the plan
together, don't say, I'm going to do it next week. Don't say, I'm going to do it in a couple days.
Do it today. Take the first step today because all too often we make a plan and then we push it off
and we push it. Oh, I'll get back. Oh, it's when I come back from vacation. Oh, it's when the
children get done with school. No, you create a plan and you begin at once. And the key to this is to make your plan as detailed as possible and understand that your plan will
move and shift over time. You know, if you're saying, okay, this is, you know, I want to lose
those 10 pounds by the end of this year. I'm going to work out, you know, three days a week. I'm going
to do meal prep every single Sunday. I'm going to get this amount of, I'll go over my macros. I'm
going to get this amount of carbs. I'm going to get this amount of protein. Well, it's going to
need to move and shift over the next few months as you get closer to, or maybe further away from
your goal. And, you know, maybe you get, you lose five pounds in the next month and then maybe you
gain a pound the one month after that. But it's to create a definite plan, a plan that you can execute immediately,
and then know that over the next six months, seven months, whatever it might be for you,
until you hit that goal, there's going to need to be a little bit of movement. But the key here is
to have a plan on a piece of paper. It's to start to develop the roadmap of exactly how you're going
to get there. So that's number four is to create a
definite plan. And then number five, what you need to do is you need to write a clear and concise
statement that summarizes one, two, three, and four. And so for instance, if you're going to,
it's going to, when I say clear and concise, people always ask this question, like, what do
you mean by clear and concise? It could be three sentences.
It could be 10 sentences.
I don't really care.
It's basically like, it ends up being like your mission statement.
And you create this mission statement.
You're going to say, I am going to lose 10 pounds by December 31st.
In order to do so, I am going to give up sleeping in till 9 a.m. every single morning. I'm going to get up
earlier. I'm going to do X, Y, Z. I'm going to give up ice cream. I'm going to give up alcohol
maybe for the next six months. I'm going to give up my excuses. I'm going to give up going out to
eat at this restaurant and this restaurant. And I am going to work out Monday, Wednesday,
Friday, and Saturday. And I'm going to do chest and back on this day. I'm going to do cardio
three days a week. I'm going to do legs on this day. And you come up with an exact plan and you
make it clear and concise, clear and concise. It's got to be very clear to you of exactly what it is you
got to do. It's got to be very concise. Not like you're not making this entire manifesto that's
12 pages long, right? Three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10 sentences, 10 at most.
And it is the exact plan where if somebody came over and said like, hey, what's your goal for the
end of this year? You could hand them a piece of paper. They could read it and they could go, got it. No questions. Can you write that out clear and
concise? And it's important to have this because what you're going to do, that's number five,
is number six, right? So number six goes directly with it. Number six is to read your statement out
loud twice daily, every single morning, as soon as you wake up in the morning and every single evening, right before you go to bed. And so that's why it's so important
to have this very clear and concise statement because you're basically going to brainwash
yourself through repetition to know exactly what it is that you want, when you want to get it by,
what you're going to give up and how you're going to get it, the exact plan of how you're going to
get there. Because all too often what happens is I've spoken to people before and it's like June, July, August. And I'm like, hey, what was your New
Year's resolution? They're like, well, what was my New Year's resolution? And they forgot this
thing that was supposed to be so important to them this year. And so when you read it to yourself
over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, you're basically brainwashing
into yourself like this is what I'm working for. This is my manifesto. This is what I'm, and once again,
I said, you don't need a 12 page manifesto, but this is like my mission statement. This is what
I am working for for the next six months. And as you start to read it more and more and more,
it starts to feel more solid. It starts to get you more excited and you start to feel driven
more towards that thing. So that is number six, is to, after you
have number five, clear and concise statement, number six is you're going to read it to yourself
every single morning and every single evening. Why every single morning and every single evening? I
mean, I would recommend you read it 10, 20, 30 times a day if you want to, but at least twice
a day, every single morning, every single evening. Well, when you wake up in the morning, your brain
is still kind of in something that they call theta state, which is dream state, which is when you are the most susceptible to being
able to access your subconscious, which is under the conscious mind.
And so what you're doing is you're basically speaking it into your subconscious every single
morning.
Then before you go to bed, have you ever like been scrolling on your phone 10 minutes before
you go to bed and like you see whatever, a house on a beach, 10 minutes before
you go to bed, and then you dream about a house on the beach and you're like, oh my God, it's so
crazy because I was just looking at houses last night. It's really not that crazy because the
last hour of you going to bed, especially the last 15 minutes, your brain is the most susceptible
when it is going back into theta state. So what if you read it every single morning,
into theta state. So what if you read it every single morning, infected, I guess you could say infected your subconscious, you infect your subconscious with this mission statement.
And then before you go to bed, what if you actually dreamed about this thing that you
wanted to accomplish? How much more excited would you get? How much more color could it give it?
And so that's really the reason why you want to do it at least twice a day, every single morning, every single evening. What I would recommend, just do it right
after you brush your teeth. It's called habit stacking. You take a habit that you do and you
just add another one on top of it. So you brush your teeth in the morning and then you read your
statement out loud to yourself because then you're reading it, you're seeing it, you're holding the
piece of paper and you're hearing it. So you're getting all of these senses at once. Not just read it, you know, in your head, read it out loud to
yourself so that you're also saying it and you're hearing it. And so that's what you're going to do
for number six. And then number seven, which is something that I always do, and I've mentioned
this many times, is when I used to work with one-on-one clients, I would always help them
come up with their goals. We'd figure out exactly what it was. And then I would ask
a really important question, which is how can I make this easier on myself? Because a lot of times
we think that our success, whatever that thing means, whether it's losing weight, whether it's
having a better relationship, whether that's making money, building a successful business,
whatever it is, we think that it needs to be hard. Like we have to struggle our
way to success. And that's, it could not be further from the truth, but we kind of have that ingrained
into us. And so the question I always ask myself is how can I make this easier on myself? You know,
knowing that I tend to, you know, the people who have the, I wrote this in my book, Level Up,
the people who have the highest willpower are not the people who are the most driven, the most committed. It's people who have designed
an environment around them that does not test their willpower. And so, you know, how can you
make it easier on yourself if you're trying to lose those 10 pounds, since that's the example
that we're rolling with? Well, I got an idea. How about you don't have any food in the house,
which is the type of food you're wanting to stay away from? You know, I know that for me, if I have something
sugary, I want more of that sugary thing. So if it's not in the house, I don't think about it.
And so if I do like sugary stuff, well, how can I replace ice cream with fruit? Like I would go for
watermelon. So how could I do that to help me? Because I'm getting the fiber as well.
So it helps me digest and it's not as bad as having the ice cream.
And so how can you make it easier on yourself?
You know, if part of your goal is you need to wake up early every single morning,
how can I make it easier on myself to wake up early every single morning?
Well, I can make sure that I go to bed earlier.
I can make sure I have a routine that's a wind down routine so that I can fall asleep easier.
I can, what else can I do to wake up easier?
I can take my alarm clock.
I could put it on the other side of the room so I have to physically get up.
There's an alarm clock that you can get that it's got wheels on it.
And when it goes off, it literally falls onto the ground and rolls all around.
So you have to physically get up and catch this damn thing that's running all over.
Maybe that makes it easier for you to wake up.
Get creative with it.
How can you make this easier on yourself
so it doesn't have to feel like it's so hard for you to lose the weight
or make the money or be happier or develop better relationships?
And so really that's what it comes down to.
It's not difficult.
It just takes your time.
It takes your attention.
And it takes you sitting down and planning these things. So number one is you have to figure out exactly what it is that
you want. Number two, you have to figure out what you intend to give up. Number three, you have to
figure out what date you're going to hit it by. Number four, you've got to create the plan. Number
five, you've got to write a clear and concise statement that summarizes one, two, three, and
four. Number six, you need to read it out to yourself every single morning and every single
evening at least. And number seven, you got to ask yourself the question, how can I make it easier
on myself to hit this goal? So that's what I got for you for today's episode. If you love this
