Welcome to today's episode.
If you have not yet done so, hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another episode.
And very rarely do I ask you guys to do this, but if you would do me a huge, huge favor,
if you've ever gotten any value from anything that I've ever put up, please go to iTunes,
however you listen to me, and give us
a rating and review of how much you like the show. Hopefully you give us a five out of five stars,
but give us an idea of what you love about it and all of those things because ratings and reviews
greatly, greatly help the page and the actual podcast itself grow because the more ratings
and reviews that we get, the more likely iTunes is to
show our stuff organically to other people. So I would greatly, greatly appreciate it if you would
go ahead and give us a rating and review. Today, I'm going to talk about something I've talked
about way, way, way in the past. And the reason why I'm talking about is because I'm just going
to be upfront and honest with you. Today, I did not want to record a podcast. I'm just going to
be honest with you. I did not want to do this.
And I thought to myself, greatness does not make excuses. When something needs to be done and something needs to be done right, greatness does not make excuses. Greatness follows through
and greatness does what it needs to do. I could take an episode from two years ago and repost it
and most people would have no idea. But I want this to be the greatest podcast that's out there.
I want to be one of the top 10 podcasts in the world.
And I want to impact as many people as I possibly can, including you.
And in order for me to do that, for me to impact those people,
I need to show up the best version of myself every single time.
And so when I get those crappy thoughts in my head, those thoughts of,
oh man,
you know what? You shouldn't, you don't, don't worry about it, man. Like you could put up an
old episode. You could do this. You could do this. The immediate thought comes in my head is greatness
does not make excuses. Greatness just gets it done. And the story that came into my head that
made me think of this is years ago, I interviewed a billionaire Priceline founder, the guy who started Priceline.com,
Jeff Hoffman.
And I interviewed him and I remember he told me this story that really impacted me.
And it's 300, not 299.
That's basically the premise of the entire thing.
And he was friends and really good friends with Evander Holyfield.
When Evander Holyfield, the boxer, the Hall of Fame boxer,
the guy who got his ear bitten off by Michael,
Mike Tyson,
I almost said Michael Jackson.
That would have been interesting.
But Evander Holyfield,
he was in his prime and Jeff was in the locker room with him.
He was in the gym and he was working out.
And he was doing this intense exercise
and he's like literally,
he did 300 reps of this crazy
intense long exercise and the long exercise was considered one rep and he did 300 of them
and that was considered his actual workout and you know Jeff admitted that he wouldn't be able
to do one rep and Evander Holyfield did 300 of them and he went up to him and Jeff was counting
it and he was getting to the end he was getting to the end he went up to him and Jeff was counting it and he was getting to the end.
He was getting to the end. He went up to him and he goes, Hey Jeff, was that number 300 or was that
two 99? And he's like, I think it was number 300. And he goes, was it 300 or was it two 99? He's
like, man, I think it was 300, but I'm not a hundred percent sure. He goes, Jeff, tell me,
was it 300 or was it two 99? And he goes, I don't know what it was,
but I think it was 300. And what he did is he went back and did one more rep. He's not sure if it was
299. He's not sure if it was 300, but if it was 300, he did 301. And he's like, man, what's like,
what's the big deal? You just did 300 reps of this thing. Like it's, and this is what Jeff is saying
to Evander Holyfield. He's like, what's the big deal, man? Like it's literally just one rep. And he looks at him dead
in the face, like looks him right in the eyes. And he says, look at me, look at me. The difference
between two 99 and 300 is the heavyweight champion of the world and every other boxer in the world.
And what that shows you is that the greatness, people who have this greatness mindset,
they're willing to outwork everybody. They're willing to do the things that they don't want
to do. I guarantee that the last thing that Evander Holyfield probably wanted to do
was another rep of this intense exercise when he had already done 299 or possibly even 300.
99 or possibly even 300. But he was, he's a hall of fame, like he's greatness embodied in a human.
And so he said, I'm going to do it anyways, because I know that, you know, the thing that I used to live by when I was younger, when I used to run a cut co-office was the person that outworks
you beat you, right? And he is going in there and putting his life on the line
and fighting these other guys. He needs to know in his mind that he's working that every single
other, he's outworking every single other person. He needs to know that the difference between 299
is the same difference between every other boxer in the world and the heavyweight champion.
And the reason why is because the best salespeople in the world out there,
the difference between the best salesperson in the world out there, the difference between
the best salesperson in the world and everybody else is that everybody else is talking themselves
out of making more phone calls.
The difference between the person who wins the fitness competition and everybody else
is the person who wins the fitness competition wakes up a couple extra mornings and does
the fasted cardio.
They go for that 30 minute run
around their house. They're the person who, you know, they end up eating exactly what they're
supposed to. They do what they don't want to do because that's what greatness does. It goes the
extra mile. And I remember when I started thinking about this a few years ago, I was on a treadmill
and I was at, you know, I was doing a 10-minute warm-up. I always put
the 10-minute warm-up before I go in to get my heart rate up. I put the incline up to 15%
and then I put it up to a level three. I don't even know what the level three means, three out
of 10. I don't know if that's three miles an hour, but whatever it is, I put it at three for that's
how fast I walk and I put it up to 15 for the incline. And I remember
it was a 10 minute, my goal is just do 10 minutes. And I was there, I was by myself. I wasn't working
out with anybody else. And I got to nine minutes and 50 seconds. And I was about to get off of the
treadmill. I was about to hit the button that says pause. And I was about to get out and start working out. And I thought to myself, hold on,
I'm about to stop at 10 seconds left. And I knew in my mind, I've heard the phrase and I've lived
by the phrase for so long that the way you do one thing is the way you do everything.
And I know that if I'm allowing myself to come up short when nobody else is watching at something that's so small that nobody in the world would know about it except for me and only me, then I'm allowing myself to come up short in other places.
If I'm allowing myself to come up short in something this small, I'm coming up short in other really big things in my life.
Because the way you do one thing is the way you do everything.
Don't ever forget that.
So, you know, there's always going to be people out there that will do 297 and that'll be
acceptable for them. They'll do 298 and that'll be acceptable. 299, excuse me, and that'll be
acceptable for them. But you need to make the mindset up right now that you're going to do 300.
You're not going to stop at nine
minutes and 50 seconds of a workout. You're going to go to 10 minutes. And I remember this thing
clicking in my head and I went, you know what? My goal was 10 minutes. I'm going to do 10 minutes
and 30 seconds. And the reason why is because I want, if the way I do one thing is the way I do
everything, well then I want to do everything just a little bit more, just a little bit more,
want to do everything just a little bit more, just a little bit more, just a little bit more than what I'm supposed to do. I want to create that habit of doing a little bit more versus
creating the habit of doing a little bit less because doing a little bit less is a slippery
slope. The way you do one thing is the way you do everything. And I know some people listen to this
and it's going to go in one ear and it's going to go out the other. But please don't be one of those people.
Because the way you do one thing is the way you do everything.
If you have a goal of making $100,000 for the year and you're at $97,000 for the year,
don't allow yourself to go, you know what?
It's only $3,000.
I already made more money than I ever have in my entire life.
No, your goal was $100,000. So if it's the last day and you're at 97,000, work your ass off to get the extra $3,000 because your goal was not 97. Your goal was 100. If your goal was to
go into the gym and do 150 different pushups, let's say, I'm not even going to say the gym, let's say it's do 100 pushups in the day. You just want to go in, you want to 150 different pushups. Let's not even say the gym. Let's say it's
100 pushups in the day. You just want to go in. You want to do 100 pushups today.
Don't stop at 90. Don't stop at 95. Don't stop at 99. I don't care if 99 when you go to push
yourself up is the biggest struggle that you have to use your knees. Use your freaking knees and
just get it done because greatness does not make excuses. The difference between 299
and 300 is every other boxer in the entire world and the heavyweight champion. The difference
between someone who stops at nine minutes and 50 seconds on their warmup and 10 minutes is the fact
that you, once you go past and you hit that goal, you will finally start to see that every little tiny thing that you do in
your life correlates to everything else. So if you stop at 9.50 and when you're supposed to go to 10,
you're going to stop at everything else just a little bit short. And you do not want to develop
the habit of coming up short. You want to develop the habit of hitting your goals, of going past
what you said you were going to do, because that is where greatness comes from. So what I want you to do is this.
I've done this, you know, and I have this inside of my office.
And when you walk out of the office, there's a whiteboard inside of my office.
And in the corner of it, there's literally a number and it says $2.99.
And then there's a slash, a red slash through it, like a red X.
Because every day I want to go through my life and think, did I bring my
best to today or was I just good enough? Was I every other boxer or was I a heavyweight champion?
Did I show up to this podcast episode and put everything that I have into it or did I just
half-ass it? I don't want to be known as someone who half-asses life. I don't think you want to be known as someone who half-asses life. I don't think you want your children to see you
half-ass your life because guess what? Your children are going to follow in your footsteps
and they're going to half-ass their life. So listen to me. The way you do one thing is the
way you do everything. So make sure that you're not coming up short and allowing yourself to come
up short and letting yourself off the hook. Make sure that you're hitting your goals. And if you can even go past your goals and
develop that habit, then you'll realize five years, 10 years from now, all of those little
teeny tiny extra reps, all of those extra 10 seconds, all of those five extra phone calls,
whatever it is that you do, made you greater than everyone else around you and made you greater than you
possibly thought that you could be. So that's what I got for you for today's episode. If you
love this episode, please share it with someone that you know, someone that you love, someone
that needs the motivation, the kick in the ass to get their life into gear. And once again, if you
do me a favor and go ahead and give us a rating review, I would greatly appreciate it. But I'm
going to leave you the same way I leave you every single episode. Make it your mission to make someone
else's day better. I appreciate you and I hope that you have an amazing day.
