Mentor, which means that I am joined by my best friend and business partner, Dean DeVries.
Dean, welcome to the show. It's great to be here, brother. Today,
we're going to be talking about how to live an epic life a little bit more in depth. We talked about it about a week or so ago, but now we want to talk about reflections from building an epic
life. Yeah. So pro tip here, every time that you run an event or have a meeting, whether it be a sales meeting or even have a conversation, it's important to debrief and reflect.
And so whether that's, you know, reflecting by yourself, reflecting with your team.
So we haven't had a chance to reflect on what we literally just got done with, which was our Epic Life live event that we ran.
It was a three day event, which was an Epic Life live event that we ran. It was a three-day event, which was an awesome event.
And we had over 2,000 people that showed up, which was really great.
So, yeah, I've got some questions for you, brother.
And we're going to dive into some debriefing and unpack some reflections from that event.
Yes.
And so we want to show you guys, number one, how we debrief.
For those of you guys that do have, you know, if you're maybe a manager,
you're in a leadership position, or you happen to have a company or a business or an office.
And then also we're going to tell you the key points and takeaways
so that you can learn a lot about yourself and your business,
whether you have one or don't have a business,
or you happen to be a manager in a management position.
So therefore you can learn and grow and see how we run our business
and behind the scenes and also grow from it as well. Awesome. So starting off, we called it the
Epic Life Live Event. So it all starts with, you know, the purpose. So Rob, how would you define
what an epic life is? For me, it is the means to be able to do what I want,
when I want, with who I want. I think ultimate freedom, I actually did a podcast on freedom,
you know, and what success means to me is freedom. I think that when people say,
oh, I want to become a millionaire, they don't want to just become a millionaire,
have a million dollars in their bank account because a million dollars in your bank account
doesn't do any cool shit. It doesn't give you any freedom. What they want is what they perceive
the life that money will give them. And so that gives them the freedom to do what they want,
when they want, with who they want, do anything that they want to in life. That's what people
want from in money. And so what I think, you know, what an epic life is, is ultimate success.
And ultimate success for me obviously means having a lot of
freedom to do what I want and also just impact a whole lot of lives and do something good in the
world and feel like by the time I leave, I did all that I could. I brought out all of my potential
to the world and changed the world in some small way at least. Yeah. Yeah. And you know, what I
really got from the event was, you know, how important a vision is and how the, and we can kind of unpack this as well in our debriefing here, but vision, also who we need to be in order to realize that vision.
And also what we need to do in order to become that person and ultimately realize our vision.
become that person and ultimately realize our vision. And I think a vision of freedom or,
and freedom could be one vision that's unique to you, but it, you know, a vision could also be,
Hey, this is, this is the type of family that I want to have. This is the type of business I want to run. This is the type of relationship that I want to have is the front, you know, the circle
of influence I want to have. So a vision really relates to so many areas of life. And that really,
you know, an epic life, everybody would define that a little bit differently. And so having a
vision is the most important thing. So what would you say, you know, the key takeaway that everybody
left with, which was, I guess, what was the purpose of the event? What was it that we were trying to get accomplished?
Yeah. So when we say Epic Life, there was three parts that we wanted to really get across to
people. So day one was the vision that they need to have. So one of the things that we find when
we work with business owners, you and I, is some of the reasons why businesses don't succeed is
because the owner doesn't have a clear vision of exactly
what it is that they want. And that's also the same thing for people in their lives. They just
don't have a clear vision for what they want in life. And I always give the example of,
it's like your mom asking you what you want for Christmas and you don't tell her what you want
and then getting pissed off for her because she didn't give you the gift that you want for
Christmas. And it's like, ask the universe for what you want, but the more clear and detailed that you are, the more likely you are to get it. So the first part is
just like the vision, getting extremely, extremely clear on exactly what it is that you want,
because when you know what it is that you want, you can see the target. It's easier to hit a
target that you can see. The second part was really changing people's perception on, it's not
about doing, it's about being right. And the embodiment of who they need to become in
order to create the life that they want. So, you know, when you look at that, you say,
I want to create this life. Well, in order to create whatever life that is and the vision that
we create on day one, you're going to have to be a certain type of person to create that life.
If I look at the life I have now, the person that I was when we first met 15 years ago would not
have been able to create that life. So I had to basically, in a sense, kill my old identity in order to step into
a new identity and an identity that I've killed many times and create a new one over and over
again to then be able to create the life that I have. And then day three today was just basically
the day of action, you know, figuring out exactly what it is that we need to do in order to create
that. So if you have a clear vision, you know exactly who you need to be. And at the same time,
you know exactly what actions you need to take. You're going to create the life that you want,
which in turn hopefully is an Epic life. Yeah. Yeah. I love that. And you know,
so many times when people set goals or create a vision, like, especially the goal of like,
Hey, I want to make more money this year. And if you make $1 more, you just achieved your goal.
For sure.
Right.
And it's like that thing that when you ask the universe, what you want, like, I want
to make more money.
You've got to get specific enough where it's like, okay, would, okay.
Would $1 more be the realization of that goal?
If the answer is no, get more specific.
Right.
Right.
So I love that.
Yeah.
It's like people who say they want to lose weight. It's like, well, if you lose one pound this year, you hit your goal, but I'm,
I'm guaranteeing if you want to lose weight, it's not one pound. Right. Exactly. So we talked a lot
about the, the purpose of vision. And you know, one thing that, that I really took away was that
the, the purpose of the, the vision is not actually to realize the vision. Can you speak to that a
little bit more? Yeah. So, you know, I always say this, like our goals are like the horizon.
You know, if I try to go towards the horizon in a boat, I'll never actually catch it. It'll just
get further and further away from me. And if you're listening to this podcast, you're probably
the type of person where as soon as you start getting closer to a goal, you start putting it
further away because you want to, you're like, I'm so close to this goal. I could achieve even more
for myself. I wonder what that would look like for me to have to achieve more and what I'd have
to do to achieve that. So the thing that, that, that's super important about it is to realize that
as corny as cliches are in saying, they're cliches because they're cliches. It's never
about the destination. It's always about the journey, right? So we're talking about the purpose of the vision.
The purpose of the vision is to realize that
accomplishing whatever that vision is,
is not the most important part.
What's important is who you need to become
in order to get that.
And when you have a very clear vision,
you get a lot.
Number one, if it's clear,
you have a whole lot of clarity
of exactly what it is that you're trying to do.
But you also get a ton of energy from it. There's a quote that I'm going to try my best to
explain it so everybody can understand, but I thought it was pretty amazing when I realized it.
And if you believe in God or the universe or something that's a higher power outside of us,
this will help. If you don't, then it still might help as well. And the quote was something along
the lines of, when you do something that is in
alignment with what you're truly supposed to be doing, the universe or God will give you the
energy to do it, right? But when you're doing something that you're not supposed to be doing
in your life and it's not fully aligned with who you are, you will have to personally come up with
that energy. So when you see someone, if you're sitting out there and you don't like your job and you don't like what you do, probably, and it drains you and it kills your soul,
it's because it's not what you're on this planet to do. That's why you're, you're struggling because
you have to come up with the energy. But when you're doing something that's fully aligned with
what you're supposed to be doing and your purpose and why you're here, something that makes you come
alive, it's almost like effortless. The energy just comes out of you. Like I said to
everybody yesterday when we were on the call, I had five back-to-back hour-long phone calls with
publishers about my book that's coming out because obviously these people want to buy the book. So I
had five back-to-back calls. Then I had two Zoom calls that told in another two hours. So that's
seven hours straight plus hopping on Zoom calls after that. So it was literally like, I realized that I was talking for a total of about eight to nine
hours straight yesterday, which if my voice sounds a little bit hoarse, that's the reason why.
But at the end of the day, I wasn't tired. I was actually really fucking fired up
because I was doing what I feel like my soul is supposed to be doing. And so the reason why
vision is so important is because when you find that vision, it gives
you energy.
It gives you inspiration to become the version of you because it excites you so much.
Like I've got to work towards that.
I want to become that.
It's so exciting.
Yeah.
The other thing that came up around vision for me was, you know, the, the practice of
connecting to vision and how important that is.
And that vision isn't something that you just do once and it's like, all right, I've got
my vision. Yeah. So what are your thoughts on that? What was your takeaway on that?
Yeah. I mean, it's basically like, you know, it's, it's basically something that you live in.
Like, like we live in air, we live in oxygen and nitrogen, right? Like we live in the atmosphere.
We don't get out of it unless we decide to, you
know, jump in a rocket ship and go outside of it. So it's like the same way that when I wake up,
when I'm in the shower, when I'm outside, when I go to bed, like when everything that I do,
when I'm in my car, I'm still inside of the atmosphere. Your vision should be the exact
same thing. Like you're inside of your vision at all points in time. It's omnipresent. It's
always around you. It's always in your head. It's not like I wake up in the morning and I attach my vision and then I go
to my shitty job and I forget about it. It's like, no, I wake up in the morning. I think about my
vision. I attach myself to it. I drive to work. I'm thinking about it when I'm at work. I'm
thinking about it. And it's something that literally it inspires me at every single moment
so that I have energy to go out and do this thing. Eventually, maybe I'm making a transition plan to
move out of my company in the next two years so that I can go after my vision.
Okay. Well then when I get home from work, well then I'm probably going to start figuring out
my transition plan so I can start doing that. So for me, it's like, it's not a thing that you do
once a week or once a day. It's like, I'm always in it. I'm always thinking about it. And it is
a part of my life. It's the reason why I'm here. And that's the important of having like a really
clear vision. Hey, is there something that's interfering with your happiness or preventing you

Yeah. Yeah. And the other thing with that too, that I got a lot from was this idea of that
vision is not a, like, it's not a firm thing. It's not a,
it's not a fixed vision. It's a, it's a constant, it's, it's fluid versus fixed, right? It's a
constant ever blooming vision and thing that we can connect to that the more we can connect to it,
the deeper relationship we have with it, but the more clear it becomes and the more it blossoms.
And sometimes vision actually changes. You know, sometimes we start with a vision that is,
that we're getting a lot of energy from because it's a direction that we're meant to move in.
And then when we move along in that journey to the point where it's like, okay, this is no longer my
vision. This is actually the opposite of my vision. I now know what I don't want. Sometimes
actually the opposite of my vision. I now know what I don't want. Sometimes realizing what we don't want is really important to connecting to what we really do want. The other thing that
pops up for me is this idea of we're moving towards the things that we think about and talk
about most. Right. And so by connecting to the vision every single day, as, as much as possible, you know, with our VIP crew,
we talked about the, uh, you know, the, one of the questions was how often should I connect to
my vision? And it's like as much as possible, because if we're moving towards the things that
we think about and talk about most, how quickly do you want to move towards it? Probably as fast
as possible. And if that's the case, connect to it as much as possible.
So, you know, one of the things that, uh, that I just want to touch on was the purpose of vision isn't to realize the vision, but it, the purpose of it really is to inspire us on how, on who,
who we need to be today. Right. So can you just unpack that a little bit more? Like, what do you mean by who you are
inspired to be today? Yeah. So we're, we're human beings. We're not human doings, right. But we
always think that, that change needs to happen externally when in reality, change needs to happen
internally first, when it happens inside of us, then we can go and change the outside.
So what we attach to when we talk about is like, one of my favorite quotes is Jim Roney says, success is something
that you attract by the person that you become, right? So when you become the type of person
who can create the life that you want, you will automatically create the life that you want.
Now, is it important to do things? Yes. But when you're automatically that person,
you automatically do those things.
Like it's just natural. It's part of who you are. It's just that type of person. So, you know,
the thing about becoming the person who you're inspired to be is number one, you figure out like
what your values are, how you want to interact with yourself in your own head, how you want to
interact with your family, how you want to interact with everyone around you, but also get really
clear on like what your standards are for every aspect of your life.
And I talked about this on a podcast episode earlier this week. And we talked about today
is that standards tend to be one of the most important things like habits matter,
but standards actually matter more because standards change the way you operate. You know,
habits are the child of the children of the standards that you have. So if you say, you know, habits are the child of the children of the standards that you have.
So if you say, you know, like I'm I'm the type of person that does what needs to be done and I'm very immaculate in everything that I do.
Well, then if I'm waking up and brushing my teeth and I haven't made my bed, then I'm immediately going to go, oh, yeah, I should make my bed.
Well, the bed is making is a habit. The standard is I'm a person that's in, you know, impeccable with every single action that I take.
You know, if I, if I go then and drink a coffee and, you know, sit out and journal and stuff like
that, and I finished my cup of coffee, I can place it inside of the sink or I can wash it.
If I wash it, would that make me more impeccable with every action that I have? Absolutely. So
yeah, cleaning up is a, is a habit, but the standard
is that I'm impeccable with every action that I take. You know, will you be perfect in this? No,
but it gives you a guiding light of like, is what I'm doing right now getting me closer to or
further from my goals? Is this action that I'm taking in line, like would the perfect version
of me 10 years from now be doing this right now? You know, if I'm thinking of, you know,
if I'm sitting there and I'm scrolling on Instagram and
I'm thinking to myself, would the perfect version of Rob that's impacting 10,000 people every single
time he hops on stage, would he be on Instagram right now? Probably not. Okay, perfect. Well,
then I need to stop what I'm doing and I need to ask myself, what would this version of me do?
So in reality, what it does is it gives me my habits, my standards, my values,
version of me do. So in reality, what it does is it gives me my habits, my standards, my values,
my operating system so that I can attach to that so that I can know in real time what I should be doing and how I can change myself to then become that version that I want to be. Yeah, that's so
money. Yeah, that was a big takeaway for I think a lot of people was the relationship between the
identity, which is like the I am this type of person, which is the identity is inspired by the standard.
This is the standard that I hold. I am the type of person that does this. And then from those
standards really births the habits. And that's why a lot of people, and this came alive in our
event over the last couple of days, is there's a lot of people that try to adopt
habits that aren't in alignment with the standards that they hold themselves to.
So they haven't done anything with their standards, but they're trying to do something with their
habits and they're finding that habits are really tough to form because they're kind
of going at it backwards.
There's people out listening that
have felt like they're at battle with themselves. It's because you're trying to develop a habit that
doesn't line up with the standards that you have. There's two sides of you that are literally a
battle at that point. Yeah. Yeah. And, and how to adjust the standards. Well, that's a whole
other conversation that we'll save for later. Um, so what, what was a high point moment for you
in the experience? Yeah. Uh, and let's go back to what we were actually just talking about, which is the IM. There was, there was a point where, um,
some, I saw two people in a row. We had 2000 people live with us for, for the days, right?
They were live with us at one point in time. So like the comment section is blowing up inside of
zoom, like ridiculously blowing up the people who were on it or like, yeah, I was going crazy.
Like you could, it was just like, you could barely see there were so many comments coming
through and two comments in a row said, I am lazy, two different people.
And there was a part, and literally I was like, should I talk about this?
Should I not talk about this?
And I was like, all right, I'm going to get to go.
I'm going to go in.
And I started talking about, you know, we're talking about the way that you speak to yourself
and the standards and the way you say I am.
I said, and I was talking about the level that we hold ourselves to and the words
that we use in being impeccable with those words and realizing that we never say a word after the
phrase I am, that is not the most empowering phrase that we can come up with. So is I am lazy,
empowering everybody out there that's listening is I am lazy and empowering phrase. No, absolutely
not. And the reason why that's important, you might be sitting
on there and be like, well, it's just words and stuff, right? My subconscious is listening all
points of time. I am Rob. And so I am identified with Rob and the actions that Rob takes. So if I
say the same way that I say, I am Rob, if I say I am lazy, what type of actions am I going to take to keep that identity?
I'm going to take lazy actions, right?
So there's never a time where I will say something outside of my mouth, except for,
you know, what I'm talking about on the podcast or teaching people that says I am,
and it's not the most empowering thing that I can possibly come up with, right?
You might have been lazy, but you're not lazy.
Another, and then I saw another thing that
popped out. It says, what if I am depressed? And I said, well, there are two aspects to depression,
but there is chemical imbalance in the brain, which they've actually found that 61% of people
who are diagnosed are misdiagnosed with depression. So there is that. So are there
people who are depressed and there's chemical actually imbalances in their brain absolutely 100 don't want to take away from them those are people who
need pharmacology actually help them in some sort of way on the flip side of that most people think
that they're depressed when in reality they have anxious thoughts they have fearful thoughts and
they call themselves depressed but they've never actually been depressed like said said that they've
been depressed right by a doctor so i do want to tread lightly when I talk about depression, cause it is a real thing. But when someone says I am depressed,
is that an empowering phrase or could it be something like I have experienced depression
before? Right. Right. I'm not saying that I am something that I don't want to be. Cause I am Rob
in the same way that I say I am Rob, I am cementing that
feeling of Rob in my body every single time. If I say I am depressed, I am also cementing that
into my body, into my brain, into my subconscious with every single thing that I do. So sometimes
people don't realize. We all have a friend that says, I am poor way too often. And they've been
saying it for 5, 10, 15, 20 years.
They're going to be poor forever until they actually change the way that they talk out loud
and the way that they talk to themselves in their own head, because it is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
They're creating that. And so I went really hardcore on like the, I am, because I was like,
I don't think people understand how important it is to be impeccable with your words and to be
impeccable with your thoughts at all points in time. Yeah. This is so game changing. Yeah. The, the, the, I am is speaking to the
identity and the identity is formed by the standards, right? They're re it's reinforced
by the standard. So I am lazy. Okay. My standard for things that take a lot of action or take a
lot of work is very low. Right. And we, you know, another thing that came alive too is we don't rise to the occasion,
we fall to our standards.
And so in those moments where there's like a calling
to take some action,
the identity of I am lazy
will then get filtered through the standard of,
this is my low standard for action,
which then creates a habit of either inaction
or just low level of action.
And ultimately we know what happens after that.
For sure.
Yep.
Absolutely.
So one of the things,
and we'll end with this is you talked about this idea of,
you know,
success being simple.
Can you expound on that?
Cause I thought that was really big too.
So I said,
I shared this today with everybody and this is,
this is the thing is that,
you know,
when we have people that ask questions, we're always like, well, now that we went through this, I have 13 new habits
that I need to create. How do, what tip do you have for creating 13 new habits? I'm like, you
don't, you create one at a time, right? I was listening to Dr. Andrew Huberman, who's actually
about to be on my podcast soon. I'm going to go out and interview him. And I was listening to him
the other day and it says it takes about a hundred days for your brain to make new neurosynaptic connections that hardwire and to get rid of old ones, or at
least to diminish old ones. You can't really get rid of them. And so that being said, why would I
try to get 13 new habits into my brain versus just having one at a time, right? Like I plan to live
for a while. I hope that I do. So if it's 365 days in the year, why don't I just
focus on my next hundred days on the number one habit that's going to be game changing for me,
not putting all of them on my plate. Cause I knew, I know that when somebody gets confused,
they're less likely to do it. Not two habits, not three habits, one habit, just do one habit for
the next 100 days. And I was, uh, I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday. I was over at his
office and I have this, this,
this men's group, the five of us get together once a month and we help each other with our
businesses and life and all that stuff. And I can't tell you who my friend is because the fact
that he's going through an acquisition of his company and he's about to, he's 39 years old.
He's about to sell his company for multiple hundreds of millions of dollars, right? At 39
years old, like that's life changing, right? Hundreds of millions of dollars are about
to drop into his bank account. And one of the things that he said is we were talking,
one of my friends that was there that's at the table with us said, it's really been eye-opening
to me this year, how much money I can make when I don't have to try to work as hard,
but I'm just fully aligned and that it doesn't take time to make money. It
just takes, you know, effort. And people think like more, I want to make more money. I have to
work, I have to work more like that's, that's built into us from the way that we're raised
for most people. And my friend who's selling his company for hundreds of millions of dollars said,
yeah, that's what they, we call that one, the success myth where it's like, in order to be
successful, you think you have to work more, but in reality, you just have to find out what it is you're supposed to be doing, like we're talking about
with vision. And you have to just be in alignment with that at all points in time. So if you guys
are out there, I have a friend who's selling his company for hundreds of millions of dollars saying
that it's not about working harder. It's about working smarter and being aligned with what it
is you're truly supposed to do. So if you're trying to make massive change in your life,
and being aligned with what it is that you're truly supposed to do.
So if you're trying to make massive changes in your life,
don't make it harder, make it smarter.
What do you do?
You work at the number one, look at the number one standard you need to change,
the number one habit that you need to change
and just be impeccable on making sure
that that one habit gets done every single day.
If you want to work out every single day for the next 100 days
and it's 1130 at night, and you forgot to do it,
you better get your ass out of the bed. And you better figure out a way to work out for 30 minutes
because you're trying to be impeccable with your word and not do anything else except for just make
sure you do that for the next 100 days. And if you do that every 100 days, you're going to get
three incredible habits built into your life every single year. And for most people, that would be
absolutely game changing for them. So success is simple. Just keep it simple. Yeah. year. And for most people, that would be absolutely game changing for them. So
success is simple. Just keep it simple. Yeah. Yeah. And the other thing and how this
relates to business is it's not about doing a bunch of different things, right? Sometimes people
have this misconception that, oh, I've got to have seven revenue streams, right? But if you
talk to anybody wealthy, it's because they got wealthy by doing one thing really, really well. So they didn't have 13
different things that they were working on to try and become great at. It's like, hey, I'm going to
eat really well for all of my meals this week. I've got 21 meals that I'm going to eat. So I'm
going to meal prep all 21 meals right now, but I'm not going to eat all of them. If I try to eat all of them, that's going to be very challenging, you know, and I
won't feel very good. I probably won't stick with it very long. So it's the same thing where it's
like focus on that one thing. So yeah, that totally came alive. Yep. So it was a great event.
What we would recommend is if you weren't at the event, obviously this is only a 25 minute episode.
We went for, you know, over an hour a day each day, over three hours of content.
So what we recommend is next time that we have an event, this is absolutely free.
We have thousands of people that joined us and we impact thousands of lives over the
course of it.
Join us next time.
It's worth your time.
I promise you that this was life changing for a lot of people.
