Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor Podcast. I am your host, Rob Dial. Today, we're going to be talking about the power of the momentum that you can get on your
Starting point is 00:00:45 side. This is really big. If you're a business owner, I've seen a lot of business owners get scared and not realize it when they start to have momentum because it doesn't feel right. When you're starting a business, it can really hold you back when you start to get momentum, believe it or not, because it feels wrong because you've been grinding for six months or a year and it just feels weird to have momentum on your side, even though I know that's what we all want. And it can hold you back if you don't harness the power of this momentum. And for those of you guys that are out there that aren't business owners, this will still help you out because you can find momentum in your job,
Starting point is 00:01:19 in your college, in your education, in everything that you do. There's in your relationships, in your joy, in your meditation, everything. There's the power of momentum that you have on your side that I think is not looked at enough and in depth of how to harness the power of momentum on your side for everything that you do. And so, you know, I have a friend who you've heard me maybe talk about him before on the podcast. and he went down and he lived with a native Brazilian tribe for 40 days. And when I say native Brazilian, I mean native, like, like native American, but native Brazilian, like these people, they don't see people from the outside too often. And so every once in a while when someone comes and lives with them and he
Starting point is 00:01:59 came and lived with them. And I mean, like they lived in teepees. He had to have a machete with him at all points in time. And one of the things that he said to me that was super interesting is he looked me dead in the eyes when he was talking about it. He goes, Rob, do you want to know one of the weirdest things about all of it? There was no depression across the entire tribe. And the reason why he thinks is because they always have something that they're working towards. They're always trying to go for getting momentum on their side for everything that they do. And so literally, like he said, they would go and they would go on hunts and the happiest days of their lives and their favorite memories are when they were able to kill something and bring it back to the entire tribe and everyone celebrated
Starting point is 00:02:37 them. And life is just so much more simpler. But he said there was no depression because they always had something that they were going for. It's kind of like Tony Robbins always says, progress equals happiness. They don't have time to sit around on social media. They don't have time to sit around and mope because they're constantly working towards the betterment of the tribe. So the thing about it and the reason why I bring this up is because they're always working towards something. You know, the women are taking care of the babies. They're going out, they're getting berries. You know, the kids, he's got a video of this, this kid, he's probably seven years old, climbing a 40 foot tree to go get berries from the top of this tree. And, you know, they were creating clothes and they were cooking and the men that they would
Starting point is 00:03:18 wake up before the sun rose, the sun came up and they would go out and they go in and hunt all day long. And then they come back and they would celebrate and they dance. And he goes, they would laugh so hard. You know, they would, they would rip farts and they would just laugh about how funny it was. And they would just, they were just cracking jokes all the time. He said they had so much fun because they always had a sense of purpose. And, and the reason why I bring this up with the, with the whole momentum on your side is because when you have this sense of purpose and you're starting a brand new business or you're starting to go into a new relationship, you're trying to shift an old relationship, we have to become very aware when momentum starts to get on our side.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Because a lot of times, let's just take business as the example. When you have a new business, it takes a while to get momentum going. Like to take a hundred pound rock and a hundred pound, you know, perfect cylinder circle, and you're just trying to push it. It's going to take a while to get that thing rolling. But once it's moving, it doesn't require as much effort. That's how business is a lot of times. That's how a lot of things are where it's like, it takes a lot to get everything going. And then once it starts going, it starts to feel pretty good. It feels like it's working. You feel like you can harness that power. So, you know, if you're taking action towards something,
Starting point is 00:04:29 if it's your business or whatever it is, and you're starting to get a little bit more momentum on your side, it's very, very important to pay attention to that momentum and to try to harness the power of it. Because a lot of people, once they start getting momentum here, number one, they give up before they get momentum. Or number two, they give up as they start to get momentum on their side. Cause it starts to feel like holding onto a rocket ship as it's taking off, you know? And I explained my business. It took about three years to get to that point where it was kind of pushing and pushing. It was doing well, it was doing well. And then at one point, it just took off. And it felt like, holy crap, this thing is exploding. We need to hold on and just make sure that we're steering it in the right direction. And for those of you guys that are out
Starting point is 00:05:14 there that are business owners, I want you to think about this. Is there a time when you've started to feel a little bit of a momentum on your side? Like you started to feel like you've actually, the ball is rolling. And does that scare you when the ball is rolling? Because a lot of times, this is super important for people to understand. A lot of times when things aren't going well for us, like then when they really start going well, we actually tend to move away from them because we're so used to things not going well for us. I know that I've done it many times. Many of the people that are business owners that I've coached, the exact same thing. I've seen this happen many times where people are so used to crappy relationships that when they have a good relationship and it's
Starting point is 00:05:52 working really well and they've got momentum on their side, it's so foreign to them that they literally screw up the relationship because they don't know what it feels like to be in a great, healthy relationship with momentum on its side. But you've got to be able to be self-aware and to take a step back and go, you know what? This is going in the right direction. This is moving. This is the way that I've always wanted it to be. This relationship is moving the way I've always wanted a relationship to move. This business is
Starting point is 00:08:39 finally starting to pick up. How can I harness the feeling of this momentum and to keep it going and maybe even get it to go faster? The way I always explain it is, you know, if we were to take a 15 pound bowling ball and take it to the very top of a hill, it's very easy if you let it go and then stop it two seconds later, right? Because it doesn't have momentum on its side. But if it's a hundred yards at the very bottom of the hill and you let go and you wait for a hundred yards and you're like, I'm going to try to stop it with let go and you wait for 100 yards and you're like, I'm going to try to stop it with my hands. And you put your hands out and it's been going down a hill for 100 yards. It's going to break a hand. And that's what your business will do. That's what
Starting point is 00:09:16 your relationships will do is they will get going so well that you've got to become very aware of when they're going well and harness the power of that momentum. It's like, you know, pushing a car at first. It takes a little while to get it going, but once it's going, it starts rolling. It's a lot easier to, and people get so afraid. And this is what they get. They get a case of what I call the, I deserve it's right. Let's, let's say that you have a, you're a salesperson, you have incredible month of sales, and then you get a little bit of fat and happy syndrome. You get a case of the I deserve it. So you have an incredible
Starting point is 00:09:48 month of sales. And then the next month you're like, you know what? I don't need to make as many phone calls this month because I crushed it last month versus keeping the momentum going. Anybody ever done that before? Where you just, you have such a great sales month, such a great month in your business. And you're like, wow, things went so well that you know what? It went so well last month. I can take a little bit of time off. And you actually stopped doing the things that you were doing that made you successful that month. Imagine if you just stacked successful months on top of each other though. How much difference would your business be? How much different would your sales be? How much different would your bank account be? How much different would everything around you be? If you notice the momentum, you kept the
Starting point is 00:10:28 momentum going instead of getting a case of the I deserve it. You know, another place where I deserve it's pop in a lot of time for a lot of people is their weight. You know, you see people who will lose 20 pounds and then they gain those 20 pounds back. And there's a lot of reasons why that is. But one of the things that they do is they get a case of the, I deserve it's, you know, they lose 20 pounds over, you know, six months, three months, whatever it is. And they stopped doing the things that got them there and they had the success with. And so, you know, they might, Oh, I'm looking really good. I've lost 20 pounds in the past three months. I, I deserve to take a night off. I'm not going to go. I was planning on going to the gym. I'm not going to go to the gym and they get a case that I deserve to take a night off I'm not going to go I was planning on going to the gym I'm not going to go to the gym
Starting point is 00:11:05 And they get a case of the I deserve it Oh I've lost 20 pounds in the past 3 months You know maybe I deserve to have some ice cream For dinner Instead I'm going to have ice cream I normally don't have a dessert after dinner But I'm going to have it anyways Because you know what I just lost 20 pounds
Starting point is 00:11:20 And they get a case of the I deserve it Honest question for everybody out there Have you done this before in some way Have you gotten a case of the I deserve it's. Honest question for everybody out there. Have you done this before in some way? Have you gotten a case of the I deserve it's? Well, you start doing really well. You start getting, like I said, that momentum on your side. And then what you do is you basically kick yourself in the crotch because you start getting a case of the I deserve it's. You stop doing the things that got you success in the first place. I see this so often. I've seen it so many times with so many business owners and so many different relationships and so many people
Starting point is 00:11:50 on their weight loss journey and their physical journey is you have to be aware when momentum is on your side and you have to be aware that when you start to get a case of the I deserve it. Here's the reason why is because your comfort zone, I always explain your comfort zone kind of like a rubber band. You know, if you were to pick up a rubber band, that's your comfort zone. And as you start to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, you start losing more weight than you ever have. You start working out more than you ever have. You start eating healthier than you ever have.
Starting point is 00:12:17 It's like taking that rubber band and pulling it a little bit, and then pulling it a little bit, and then pulling it a little bit, and then pulling it a little bit. And the further away that your hands get away from each other, and then pulling it a little bit and then pulling it a little bit and then pulling it a little bit. And the further away that your hands get away from each other, aka the further away that you get from normal, from your comfort zone, the more that rubber band is going to try to pull itself back. So the resistance gets stronger
Starting point is 00:12:40 the more that you pull the rubber band away from where it normally is. So the further that you push yourself outside of your comfort zone, the more that you're going to get away from where it normally is. So the further that you push yourself outside of your comfort zone, the more that you're going to get a case of the, I deserve it. And people it's, this is a, this is a real thing. You will subconsciously self-sabotage your success if you're not paying really close attention. And a lot of people won't even notice it until six months down the road. You know, they, they lose the 20 pounds, they gain it back. And then six months later, they look at themselves and like, what the hell?
Starting point is 00:13:09 Like I was doing so well. Like why do I have this weight back on my body? And then they look at it and they don't realize it, but they got a case of the I deserve it. They started allowing themselves to skip workouts. They started allowing themselves to skip meal prep. They started allowing themselves to have an extra dessert or to have pancakes in the morning instead of their eggs. They got a case of the I deserve it's
Starting point is 00:13:32 and then six months down the road, kicks them in the crotch. They didn't realize it, but that's what happened to them. Happens a lot for salespeople. I've taught, by the time I was 24, I taught over 2,000 sales reps. And it's so crazy how many sales reps will have incredible months and then shit months and then incredible months and then shit months. And they can't keep the momentum on their side. That's where you really
Starting point is 00:13:53 see the hockey stick of, you know, business going well, it's going well. And then boom, it explodes and it scales to massive, massive amounts is if you can hold onto that rocket ship and continue to keep doing the things that you haven't done before in the past and that your subconscious doesn't want you to do because your subconscious wants you to stay in your comfort zone. It wants you to stay where you currently are because where you are is safe. And the further that you push yourself, it doesn't know if it's safe out there. And so you have to become very aware when you're starting to get momentum on your side that you've got to keep the momentum going. You've got to keep your pedal on the ground. Otherwise, you'll wake up and realize
Starting point is 00:14:30 six months, a year down the road, like what the hell? How many times has this happened to you? It happens in so many ways. It happens in relationships. It happens with salespeople. It happens with business. It happens with weight loss. It happens in so many different places where people start to do really well. This happens all the time in morning routines. People are like, you know what? I'm going to do this morning routine. I'm going to keep this morning routine going. And they do the first day and it's amazing. Do the second day. It's amazing. And they finish an entire week and then they go into week two and then week three, four or five, they start to get out of it. And they're like, man, why don't I feel as good as I did a month ago? Oh yeah. Cause I've been hitting the snooze button instead of waking up at 5am
Starting point is 00:15:09 like I originally planned. And so it takes very hardcore self-awareness. I always tell people, people always say like, if you could give the world a superpower, what would it be? And mine is extreme self-awareness because if everybody was extremely self-aware of everything that they did, of everything that they thought, of all of the patterns that they're stuck in, our world would be an incredible place. And so you've got to develop the skill of self-awareness to know, all right, you know what? I'm feeling a little bit of momentum on my side. I have lost three pounds in the past week. I have made $5,000 in the past week. I've never made that much before. I have
Starting point is 00:15:45 felt really good in this relationship. My team is doing amazing. And to develop the awareness of, okay, what are we doing? What are we doing that's causing this? And instead of taking our foot off the gas, how can we keep it on the gas? What do we need to do to create a plan for me to continue to keep this momentum going? And instead of sitting there and thinking like, let's just keep going at the rate that we're at. It's like, Hey, how can we push even further? How can we push even harder now that I feel like I have, you know, push myself outside of my comfort zone with my weight and with my weight loss. And also with my dieting, how could I make it even better? How can I make it even, how can I support it? How can I drink
Starting point is 00:16:22 more water? How can I get more sleep to support my muscle growth and my fat loss? Maybe I could do a few extra sauna sessions, so therefore I can lose some more weight. Instead of giving a case of the I deserve it and going, you know what? I really do. I do want that pizza, but you know what? I'm not at the point where I feel like I deserve it. Maybe I set a contest for myself and I allow myself to have a pizza. This is actually what I do to show you guys. No, I get one cheat meal a week and that cheat meal Saturday. And it's always after a workout and it's always pizza, right? So it's like, how do you, how do you have a reward? And then you go right back to what you were doing and keep the momentum on your side versus falling off completely. And you know, you have to think of the, I deserve it. And when they spent, when they pop
Starting point is 00:17:02 up, you know, some people, this happens a lot also with saving money, making money, is people will make more money than they ever have. How many people listening right now? Say me if you've done this before. You know, you might be used to seeing $2,000 in your bank account. Let's just say it's 2,000, right? Whatever it is, it's different for everybody that's out there.
Starting point is 00:17:21 And then you get a bonus check that you weren't expecting. And maybe you get $4,000 in your bank account now and you're like, holy crap, I have $4,000 in my bank account. And it's not like you go out and you just blow it all on one thing, like a TV. And maybe instead of doing that, you're like, you know what? We're going to go out to eat because I just got a big paycheck. Maybe I'll order a couple of drinks because I got a little bit more money in my bank account. And you go from having $4,000 in your bank account. And because you got a case of the, I deserve it's, it gets a little bit less and it gets a little bit less and a little less. And six months later, you look back at your bank account and you're like, hold on, I've only got $2,000 in my bank account again. Six months ago, I had $4,000 in my bank account.
Starting point is 00:18:03 I didn't make any big purchases. I didn't buy a car. I didn't buy a TV. What the hell happened? What happened was that you got a case of the, I deserve it. Oh, I got a bonus. I have more money. I deserve this versus going, oh my gosh, look, I just got a bonus check. That's momentum on my side for money saving. What can I do to keep my momentum going for this money saving to get this even better, to save even more money? Maybe I can work a little bit harder, make some extra phone calls this week to get even more money because I like the feeling of having more money in my bank account. It would blow your mind
Starting point is 00:18:34 as to how often I see people get momentum on their side and then quit and get momentum on their side and quit, get momentum on their side and then quit. Success is not hard. You just got to keep going. Just stop stopping. When you get momentum, keep going. When you get momentum, keep going. When you get momentum, keep going. So many people get some momentum and then they stop. And then they get some momentum and then they stop. What if you maintained your momentum? What if you kept that momentum going? What if you harness the power of that momentum and go, you know what? I'm going to make my relationship even better. I'm going to make my sales even better. I'm going to make my business even better. I'm going to make my weight loss even better. In every single aspect of your life, how can you harness
Starting point is 00:19:11 the power of that momentum and realize that the further that you get away from normal, just like that rubber band, the more there's going to be resistance to pulling you back. But if you pull a rubber band and pull it and pull it and pull it and pull it and pull it, it eventually snaps. That is where you've broken out of your comfort zone and you create a new version of yourself. So harness the power of your momentum. Learn this and I guarantee you it'll be life-changing for you.
