Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor podcast. I am your host, Rob Dial.
And if you have not yet done so, hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another
episode. And today is Thursday, which means that this is the business edition of the Mindset
Mentor, which means that I am joined by Dean DeVries, my best friend and business partner. Dean, how are you, my friend? I am doing amazing. It is great to be here. The last day of
freaking 2020. I am so excited. Yes. 2020 is over and it is the very last day. Some people are like,
holy shit, I'm so excited that the last day of 2020 is finally here because in their mind, they mentally
think that now they get to turn a page. And I guess we do get to turn a page on a year,
but at any point in time in the year, somebody can just go, Hey, I'm going to turn the page
and it's going to be a brand new thing for me. But, but I want people to think about, and Dean,
I want, I want to dive into this. I want people to think about how was 2020 for them, right?
So if they were to rate it on a scale of one to 10,
if you guys out there listening were to rate this on a scale of one to 10, what would you rate
this year for you? Be honest with yourself. Would you rate it a four or five, a six, seven, eight,
nine, 10? Maybe it was amazing for you. Maybe it was terrible. What would you rate it?
And if you could attach one word to this year, what would it be? I want you to challenge yourself to come up with this word.
What would that one word be?
Would it be amazing?
Would it be terrible?
Would it be challenging?
Would it be lessons?
Would it be ridiculous?
Would it be out of control?
What is the word?
I guess that's a phrase.
But what is the word that you would attach to 2020?
I want you to think about that.
Yeah, and I think what's also really important about this
is to understand that 2020
is really just one chapter in your journey,
one chapter in your story.
And one of the things that I love about just being a human
is that we always have an opportunity to transform.
So we don't have to wait necessarily
for a new year, but just because it's the next time around the sun where we, you know, January
1st just seems to be like a clean slate. And Hey, if that's, if that's what you want that to mean,
go for it, go all in. And you know what I love about rating 2020 and like assigning that word,
it really allows you to
reflect on the story of 2020 and understanding that everything that you experienced in 2020
was exactly what you needed to experience to be ready for 2021. So what was that? What lessons
did you learn? What could you extract from 2020 that prepared you to have an even better and
even more amazing 2021.
Yeah. And I feel like 2020 was like the longest and shortest year ever. Like,
I don't know how it was possible, but it was like the longest year I've ever had.
It was also the shortest year I've ever had. Like if I think back to when COVID first hit
and I was locked up, you know, we were in lockdown in Sedona and we went through and
like binge watched Tiger King. That feels like it was forever ago.
But there's certain things that feel like it was forever ago. There's certain things that feel like it was not that long ago as well. And if I think back, that was basically the spring for me. But
if we rewind, I want to go back and literally think of all of 2020, because it feels like it
was so long ago and it feels like it was so short ago. But if we look back to the winter,
so if we say like May or excuse me, January through March, how was the winter for you
before COVID hit? Just think about that time. How was it? And what did you learn from the winter?
Because the tragic thing is that a lot of people go through life and they don't assign lessons or
learn lessons from everything that happens to them. And so I'm curious with everyone that's
out there and as you're listening, what did you learn from the winter?
What was it? What, what would you do learn from it? Put it down on a piece of paper,
pause it if you need to. Yeah, I love that. And, and, you know, probably the winter is a hard time to tap back into for many people, because to your point,
I feel the same exact way. Like this year was the longest and the shortest. I think part of that was
because there are so many experiences,
so many transformations, so many things going on that was just packed in one year. So it felt like
time was moving really, really fast, but also there was just so much that happened. And so,
you know, go back to before, you know, the, the world basically shifted. We can all agree that,
you know, the world has shifted. And, you know, if you haven't realized that, like, you know, the, the world basically shifted. We can all agree that, you know, the world has shifted.
And, you know, if you haven't realized that, like, you know, hello, get out of the, get,
get out from under the rock that you've been living under because, you know, things are,
um, are definitely shifted, especially from the winter. So reflect back on that time,
you know, what was important for you? What was exciting for you? What were you working on?
time? You know, what was important for you? What was exciting for you? What were you working on?
And, you know, I think it's just really important to go back to like that January 1st New Year's resolution, assuming that you had one, what did that look like? And how did you go through the
winter in alignment with that New Year's resolution? Yeah. So you have the winter,
we went through the winter. What did you learn from it? Now, if you move into it, let's go into
the fall or excuse me, into the spring. What did you learn in the spring?
You know, this is right when COVID started to hit, when lockdown, there was so much fear and
there was so much worry. We knew so little about it. You know, if you think about like how little
we knew when it first came out, what would you say that you learned from that? What lesson did
you learn from those months that we were in? lockdown first started? When the, you know,
for us in the United States, we locked down and it seemed like every single country locked down.
What did you learn from that? Did you, did you have some time to sit back and reflect of what
you actually learned from it? Okay. So now that you've learned from the spring and you've learned
from the winter, what'd you learn in the summer as we started to get out of this, uh, what seemed
like lockdown, you know, some countries are in, some countries are out. We're in and out,
we're in and out, we're in and out. It feels like, but in the summer, what did you learn?
There's a lot of stuff that happened over the summer here in the United States and
things got kind of tough and it got kind of heavy in the United States. There were some protests.
There's a lot of stuff that was going on. And then go into the fall. What did you learn into
the fall? And I want you to figure out if you were to go through the four seasons that we've
had this year, what were the four lessons that you could pull out of this year in every single season that we went through?
Yeah. And also reflect back on years past, like what, what was the spring, summer, fall, winter?
What were those seasons like for you in the past? And what, what was that time of year generally
representative of in your life when you look back before 2020?
And then what shifted? And certainly, if you look at the external circumstances, the world has
shifted, but also what shifted within you? I think that's also a really important point to just
honor is the fact that everything that we experienced in 2020 as a collective,
and I believe as a human species, we just needed to experience this so that we can
see a different part of ourselves come out. So what came out that maybe wasn't there,
or what came out that you can appreciate what came out that maybe you didn't like
and build some awareness around, uh, what those seasons were like for you and what was coming,
what was, what was going on in for you and what was going on in your
mind, what was going on within just your awareness and what was important for you in those moments.
Yeah. And to live through something as challenging or tragic or whatever it is that you want to say
that we live through, it would be really bad to not learn from it, right? Everything that happens
to you, every challenge that pops up
in your life, whatever it is, is some type of lesson if you extract the lesson. And what I
want to do is I want to think back of how this year was. And then what I want to do is I want
to just close the chapter. I want to close the book on what was 2020. And the reason why is
just because the past happened doesn't mean that it has anything
to do with your future. If you choose for it to, it does. Like if you want to say, oh, because,
you know, like for instance, people say stuff like, oh, because I've been broken up with so
many times, I must be terrible in relationships. And then what do they do? They go into the next
relationship and they're worse and they treat people worse because they're already terrible
at relationships and they sabotage their next relationships in the future because of the past. That's only because they've assigned
something to themselves and they're bringing that past into the future. You don't have to bring your
past into the future. Your past actually means literally nothing to your future. Nothing.
And your brain might think that it does because your brain likes to look at past results and try
to bring those past results and say, well, if this happened in the past, it's probably gonna happen in the future. But the way
I like to think of it is this, if you're on a boat, if you've ever been on a boat and you turn
around and you look at the boat behind the boat where you just were, you could see that there's
always boat wake. There's always the waves that are coming off the back of the boat.
Your past dictates your future as much as the wake of the boat steers it.
And it doesn't.
That's the beautiful thing about it is literally the wake of the boat behind it
does not steer the boat.
It just happens to be where the boat once was.
And so you would never look at the wake of the boat and say,
oh my gosh, we're turning east because of the waves behind us.
No, you're not.
And so your past has literally, absolutely
nothing to do with your future. Yeah. I love that analogy, dude. And, you know,
just going back to the analogy that life is like a story, just understand that your 2020 story,
like whatever that was for you, whatever 2020 meant for you, whether it was the best year of your life, and I know many people it was.
And I also know there's people that I've talked to that said that it was the worst year of their life.
And wherever you are in between those two polarities and how you view 2020, just understand it's just a chapter in your story. And the only difference between a horror story
and a hero story is that in a hero story, there's a transformation. There's a decision that's made.
And like what I love about what you just shared about the boat wake is that,
you know, what's behind you has nothing to do what's in front of you.

The way that we work changed massively in 2020.
If there's one thing that we've learned,
it's that you have to be able to adapt and pivot at any time in your business.
And it's also super crucial to maintain a strong digital presence at all
times. So how can your business plan for the future and operate virtually? Well, finding the
right talent can be time consuming and frustrating and also really expensive. That's why I recommend
Fiverr. Fiverr is an online marketplace that connects businesses with freelancers offering
hundreds of digital services, stuff like graphic design, copywriting, web programming, film editing,
and so much more. And I've been using Fiverr for the last five and a half years since I started my

Fiverr and receive 10% off your first order by using my code DIAL. Find all the digital services
you need at one place at F-I-V R.com code dial. Once again, that's
fiverr.com code dial. Yep. A hundred percent. And that's the thing is that you have to literally,
and it's hard for a lot of people to disconnect the past because we see it as one linear thing
as if it's just one thing, but you have to look behind you and say, never once has anything ever
happened to you in your present moment that has ever actually been changed because of something that happened
in the past.
Like it's, it's, you can't bring something that happened to the past into the present
moment.
And so with that, what that means is if 2020 is the past.
Now, if we're listening to this, the day it comes out, it's still the present.
It's about to be the past.
But if you listen to this any other day, it's the day this comes out.
2020 is basically the past, which means that we have a brand new opportunity.
I don't give a shit about how your 2020 was.
I don't care.
It doesn't matter.
You can attach amazing.
You can attach horrible.
You can tragic.
You can say whatever it is that it was, but it's time to turn the page on it, to look
into a new year and say, you know what?
is it was, but it's time to turn the page on it, to look into a new year and say, you know what? The beautiful thing is that I'm fully 100% in control of what happens in 2021. And I have a
chance to literally wipe the slate clean and say, I've got a brand new blank canvas. I'm going to
paint whatever it is that I want to in my life in 2021. Yes, dude. I love that. This is the beginning of a new story.
Personally, for a vulnerable moment here, I'll just share that for me, 2020 was probably the
most challenging year that I've ever had, but it's also been the most rewarding year that I've ever
had in so many different ways, so many lessons. So it was so rich in lessons.
And, you know, for that reason, I just feel like totally equipped to just go into 2021 to really
design something, design a life, design a business, design my relationships, my finances, my body,
my spirit, my mind. I can really design those. And I have more empowerment, more tools
that are in my, my arsenal because of everything that, that I've experienced this past year,
I feel more prepared, prepared and empowered to really create whatever it is that I want.
And I want to invite that for everybody that's listening right now, like this is your chance.
2021 is your blank canvas. Yeah. And the thing that I can say from, like this is your chance. 2021 is your blank canvas.
Yeah. And the thing that I can say from outsider's perspective is, you know, I've known you now for 14 years and I can say this is definitely the most challenging year that I've seen you go through.
That's for sure. So it was a challenging year for you. But the one thing that I can say is that
there was, you and I talk pretty much every day. So, you know, today we talked like five times
today, six times today. Like we talk multiple times every single day. And never once did I ever hear you complain or
act like you were a victim of your circumstances from 2020. It was always like, this is what's
happening to me. This is where I'm going. And this is what I'm going to do to get past this.
And so do you have anything to reflect on as far as, you know, sharing anything that you realized
about yourself and you don't have to go into details, but just anything that you realize
about yourself or pieces that you took away from 2020, knowing that it was, it was definitely,
in my opinion, from knowing you the most challenging year I've seen you go through,
but there was never a moment where you felt like this is happening to me and I'm a victim.
Yeah. And I think just that mindset and really, because it's, it's one thing to know of a concept, like that concept of it's not happening to me, but it's happening for me. And like when things are good, it's easy as shit to say that, you know? Oh yeah, no, it's, it's happening for me. Right. But like when shit's hitting the fan and you're in the middle of it and to root into that belief of like this is happening for me.
That's really where that faith and that concept and like knowing it or knowing of it turns into really knowing it.
And and that's that's also kind of the gift is, you know, and there's so many so many many examples of this just in, in previous years too,
where I'm like, yeah, I know of that, but I don't really know it. And so like, that's another thing
that I'm like really intentional about in 2021 are some of these, these things that are popping
up into my awareness. So I'm like, Hey, I didn't really know that, uh, in 2020 or in years past.
And so 2021, like I intend to really know that, how can I embody that? How can
I live that? And, you know, for, for me, it was just, it really was that belief of like, Hey,
this is, this is my perfectly crafted curriculum by my creator. I, you know, and, and the idea of
perfect. And let me just share this real quick, because this was a huge, just, this was a huge belief system that really gave
me a lot of strength throughout this year. And it's the concept of what we think is perfect or
what we think should happen. And, you know, I think we can all agree that nature is perfect.
It's literally perfect or else it wouldn't nature wouldn't be if it wasn't perfect so everything
that is everything around us everything the way that everything works is always perfect
however our definition with our you know our small human brains what we believe is perfect
tends to revolve around our ego and whatever's going to serve ourselves. And so, you know, the, the, the major
takeaway that I had from, from this year, just kind of going along with that, that idea of that
life is not happening to me. It's happening for me is I have to just look at everything around me,
look at all my circumstances, look at all my relationships, look at the consequences of all
my decisions and allow that to be perfect. And then my definition of perfection now comes
through, okay, whatever is shown, whatever is showing to me, whatever I'm experiencing,
obviously has to be perfect. Even if this is not what my idea of perfect was before this happened,
this is perfect. So understanding that it's perfect. Now I just have to show up to it and the best version of myself with as much integrity,
with as much love, with as much, you know, strength as I, as, as I have within me, because
I know that this is perfect.
And even though I'm not perfect, I'm going to try to be as, as much of that as possible
so I can overcome that challenge, whatever that might be.
Yeah.
I love that. Yeah. What if your business failed this year? What if that was perfect? And
the reason why it was perfect was because you needed to have that business clear out that you've
been dreading it, going to work every single day and working there because you just started because
you wanted to make money and you had to get rid of it. The universe had to get rid of it because
it needed to make way for the next thing that you're supposed
to go into. So something that you're truly passionate about, or what if you had a relationship
that, you know, COVID, you guys were in close quarters all the time. And because of the fact
that you're in close quarters, you got on each other's nerves and you ended up breaking up
because it was just too much. What if instead of sitting back and going, Oh my God, I wish that
would have gone better. You realize that it had to happen so that you could number one, learn from
it, what you do and don't want, do and do not want from relationships. But also at the same time,
it clears the way for the next relationship, which might be the actual relationship you're
truly supposed to be a part of. And that's what most people don't think of is they reminisce on
the past and they sit there and they wish, oh, I wish it was different. I wish I would have done
this better. I wish this would have happened versus looking at it going, I need to learn from this.
I'm going to learn from this.
I'm going to be a champion and not a victim of my past.
And I'm going to learn from it because you can literally see, as we said, everything
that's happened to you in your life as something that's happened to you or something that's
happened for you in 2020, no matter if it was amazing or whether it was a big old steamy
pile of shit was made for you
perfectly, but you have to accept that and you have to move on with it.
Yeah. Yeah. And, and just going with that, that frame, I mean, you know, that we, we live with
the consequences of our choices and the choices that we made in the past are also perfect. And so just, just because
it's set us up to put ourselves into a new set of choices, but to, to not learn from that and to not
learn it's every, every choice that we make in every consequence that we experience, we're always
just dialing in like, okay, is this getting closer or farther away from the life that I actually want?
Going back to your example about business, like if your business just ends up failing one day or just, it goes down the shitter
and it's like, what is happening to my business? It's also, you know, what I love about business.
And we talk about this all the time is always, it's always a reflection of what is going on
within you. So chances are that if there's something going on in your business, that's
not doing well, it's a direct result of something that isn't in alignment within you, whether it's, you know, integrity or whether
it's attention in a certain area or whether it's not treating people the right way or whatever the
case may be. There's so many different reasons that why that could manifest, but it's, I believe
it's the universe, God or creator, whatever higher power you believe in.
I believe that that is the, um, just the, the highest form of the universe showing us love
because it's like, Hey, I love you. I want to give you an experience that's going to cause you
to grow and to become better and to become who you are really meant to be. And so for that,
2020 was such a gift. And just in this reflection, and you know, one thing I just want to invite,
if you're listening and going through this exercise, if you haven't gone through this
exercise, like literally pause this and actually do this. There's something special about just
journaling about it and just writing it down. Like sure, you can go through it in your head
and you can think about it and just kind of, you know, think in circles, but there's
nothing like actually writing it down, putting it on paper, immortalizing it into, you know,
into physical form. And, you know, when you do that and you reflect, it's, um, it just,
it allows for you to really appreciate the fact that the universe has got your back.
Like everything is conspiring with you to move you towards where you're ultimately meant to be for your highest potential.
Yep.
Yep.
I love that.
And really what it comes down to everybody is it is over.
We can go ahead and we can take the final page of 2020.
We can flip it.
We can close that book.
We can throw it up on the bookshelf and we can go into a brand new empty book with no text on it.
It's a blank canvas. We get to create whatever it is that we want to create. And we can either look at it as if we're just dodging bullets the whole freaking year and that we're just trying to
get by and hopefully things go well. Or we can step up and we can say, this is my year.
I'm going to do everything that I possibly can to make it the best year of my life.
I will not be a victim anymore.
I will be a champion.
And the beautiful thing about it, everybody, is that the choice is yours.
It always has been yours.
It always will be yours.
We're just going to try to be here to hopefully keep you back on track.
So that's what we got for you for today's episode,
for the final episode of 2020.
We appreciate you guys.
We love you guys for being here, for listening, for being a part of this.
Let's make 2021 the best year of our lives.
And I'm going to leave you the same way I leave you every single episode,
making sure you make someone else's day better.
I appreciate you.
And I hope that you have an amazing day.
