Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor Podcast. I'm your host, Rob Dylann.
If you have not yet done so, hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another podcast
episode. And if you're out there and you want to receive motivational text messages from me
directly to your cell phone, and you live in the United States or Canada, text me right now, 512-580-9305. Once again, 512-580-9305. Today, we're going to be talking about one of the biggest
hangups that I see that stops people from taking the action that they need to in order to create
the life that they want. So if you feel like sometimes you somehow get in your own way,
maybe you self-sabotage in some way,
this podcast episode will really help you out. And if you can master this, it will be so much
easier for you to take action, to do whatever it is that you need to do to create the life that
you want. Because life is very simple. I keep saying this a lot. It's black and white as to
whether you get what you want to in life. It's not like you kind of get
what you want to. It's either you get what you want to or you don't, and that's it. And if you do these
things, you're going to stop holding yourself back. You're going to start taking action you need to so
that therefore you can create the life that you want. And so it's the idea of opportunity versus
obligation. The opportunity of something versus the obligation
of something. And what that means is the opportunity is the eventual end result that you will get
from taking the action that you need to. So the opportunity is the eventual end result that you
will get from taking the action that you need to. The obligation is what's in front of you,
the action that actually needs to be taken.
So I'll give you an example, right? Let's say, you know, the obligation that's in front of you
is lifting weight, you know, going to the gym, working out, actually picking up,
literally picking up weights and moving them around. That's the obligation that's in front
of you. The obligation is you've got to put your body under strain,
under stress. And the fact of the matter is it's easier not to do anything than it is to actually go and do something. And this is where most people don't take action because it's easier not to do it
than it is to actually get yourself, get ready, go to the gym, drive over there, and then put your
body under strain and stress. It's easier not to do, and that's where people usually mess up. But when you look at the obligation that's in front of you,
and you're only focusing on the obligation, it makes it much harder to take action because
you're only thinking about, oh my God, I got to get dressed. I've got to go to the gym. I've got
to drive there at 17 minutes. I've got to go to the gym. I've got to sweat. I've got to make sure
my water bottle's filled up. I've got to make sure I have everything that I need. I've got to make sure that I have my plan of exactly
what I need to do to work out. And you start to think about all of the obligations that you need
to do in order to get yourself into the shape that you want. That's the obligation. What's the
opportunity though? And what's the opportunity of me actually getting up, going to the gym
consistently four times a week, five times
a week, over and over and over and over again. The opportunity is, well, I could lose some weight.
I could get into the shape that I want to. I could, you know, for ladies, you might be like,
you know what? I could finally be proud to be in a bikini. I haven't felt good in a bikini since,
you know, I was 21 years old and it'd be amazing to feel great again. The opportunity,
guys, if you're a skinny guy, is if you go in and you lift weight and you lift weight and you push
yourself and you put your body under strain and stress and strain and stress over and over and
over again, is getting some muscle, maybe getting the six pack you've been wanting.
So when you look at it, the obligation still needs to be done. The lifting of the weight,
the going for the run, the heading to the gym, all of those things need to be done. But if you're only focusing on that,
it's going to make it much harder to go and take action. If you're only focusing on,
oh, now I've got to go to the gym. Now I've got to work out and I've got to do this and I've got
to do this. But if you're focusing on, you know what? I'm going to feel amazing when I'm on the beach
and I'm looking the best that I have in 24 years and I have the muscle I've always wanted,
I've lost the fat I look great in my bathing suit or my bikini. The obligation is still there,
but instead of focusing on the obligation, you're focusing on the end result, which is the
opportunity if you actually take some action.
Make sense? Let me give another example. Eating healthy is another example, right? The obligation is that you have to stay away from certain foods that maybe you used to eat. Maybe you love ice
cream and you've got to stay away from it for a little while, or maybe you've got to have less of
it, or maybe you've got to have less greasy food. And this is where people don't get healthy.
And the reason why is because they don't like change. They don't like having to
not have the food that they used to that might be not as good for them. And so they look at the
obligation. And then they also look at the obligation of, well, if I want to eat healthier,
I'm going to have to cook this. And then I'm going to think about the process of having to cook. And
I'm going to think about the process of this and this and this. And you're focusing on the obligation,
the thing that you have to do. Now, I want to be clear. All of these things, the obligations,
still need to happen. But instead of focusing on them, what you're doing is you're focusing
on the opportunity, the end result that you want. How about the amount of energy that you will
finally have when you finally start eating the food that you need to that actually your body thrives off of? The amount of energies you're
going to have is going to be amazing. What about the opportunity of being able to stay alive longer
for my children and be able to, when I'm in my 70s, be able to play with my grandchildren
at a rate that I can't even probably play with them right now, right? So you start to
think about what's the opportunity if I do take this action? Once again, you're not focusing,
you're still doing them, but you're not focusing on the things that you need to do. You're focusing
on the end result of what you will get when you do this, right? The fact that you're going to
finally have no joint pain if you start eating the food that
you want to, the stuff that you know that you should, start getting away from sugar,
start getting away from alcohol. Once again, the obligation, we all know what the obligation is,
but stop focusing on the obligation. Start focusing on the opportunity that's in front of you.
Make sense? Let me give you another example. Making phone calls, right? If you're a salesperson and you have to make phone calls,
I've made probably 100,000 phone calls in my lifetime
for different sales companies that I worked for, right?
Sitting down and making phone calls
is never something that I ever looked forward to.
And I would say 99.9% of sales reps
don't look forward to it.
The obligation is you got to sit down.
You got to put in the work. You've got to call people. The obligation is you've got to get
rejected on some of the phone calls. The obligation is that some people are going to say no to you.
The obligation is that, hey, maybe one or two people might actually hang up on you.
Oh, and you've got to feel that feeling of shit. I just got hung up on by somebody.
you. Oh, and you've got to feel that feeling of shit. I just got hung up on by somebody.
That's the obligation. What is the opportunity though, if I make myself sit down and actually put in the work? Well, the end result, making more money than I ever have maybe. How about
buying my first house? That's an amazing obligation or amazing opportunity that comes
on the other side of this. Maybe it's being able to
pay for my children's education. Maybe it's being able to buy the car that I've always wanted. Maybe
it's being able to take my family on trips, to be able to take my children to Italy so that they
can not just experience the world by looking at it through books, but I'm going to actually give
the experience of actually being in that physical place. I'm not just going to let them see the Coliseum through
pictures. I'm going to let them see the Coliseum physically in person and actually see what that's
like. And you start thinking about that opportunity versus the obligation of what it is that you have
to do to get there. And you start actually wanting to take action because you want to get to that
opportunity sooner than later. You know, the obligation of, oh yeah, I need to make my phone calls. I need to get up and make
phone calls and I need to make phone calls and make phone calls. But maybe it's the obligation
of, you know what? I promised my mom when I was a kid that I was going to buy her a car.
And that's been like one of my life goals. I just want to buy her a nice car because she's never had
a nice car. Well, then instead of thinking about the phone calls, now, once again, the phone calls are still being made, but I'm focusing on the end result that I
actually want to get to. The opportunity is when I make these phone calls, my mom gets the car that
I promised her when I was a kid. When I make these phone calls, I get to take my kids on a trip to
experience the world. When I make these phone calls, my children are going to be able to,
I'm going to be able to pay for my children's education if they do get into a really
good school. If I make these phone calls, I'm going to be able to buy my first house and get
my children out of this apartment that they live in. Once again, I'm still doing the obligation,
but instead of focusing on the obligation, I'm focusing on the opportunity of what I want to get
from taking the action that I need to take. It's hard to imagine, but spring is basically

Let's give another example. Let's go through a couple more. What
about waking up early, right? The obligation is I've got to get on my warm, comfortable,
amazing bed where I could sleep all damn day. And it's just so much easier just to stay in bed. And
that's where most people usually fail is they're just like, man, it's too comfortable. It's too
warm in here. This feels amazing. I don't want to get up.
I don't want to do my morning routine when it feels this good. And we start thinking about,
man, I've got to get up and I've got to get out of this warm bed. That's the obligation.
But what's the opportunity of you waking up early? Well, maybe how much better you're going to feel after an amazing morning routine. How about that? How much better you're going to treat
the people around you if you have
an amazing meditation this morning. You know, sometimes you wake up and you have an amazing
meditation and you take care of yourself. You have coffee and you get to hang out and you get to
chill in the morning. Then you go to work, then you go out into the world and you're just such,
so much of a better person, a better version of you. And then there's sometimes, I've done this
many times, where I miss it. I screw it up somehow. And then there's sometimes, I've done this many times,
where I miss it. I screw it up somehow. I somehow hit the alarm and I don't even realize that I hit the alarm and something went wrong. Maybe I got out of my bed, I turned the alarm off and then
I came back to bed. I'm like, shit, I didn't even know I did that. And now I'm rushing and I didn't
get to my meditation. I didn't get to my reading. I didn't get to my journaling. I didn't get to my
workout. And I go through and the rest of the day is just kind of like reaction. Like I'm just reacting to this and this and I'm reacting to this and this.
And I don't feel like I'm a hundred percent of the person that I could be, right? Instead of
thinking about having to get up, I'm going to start thinking about how I can actually impact
the world, how I can be different, how I can feel different when I do get up, when I do have my
morning routine, when I do have my workout, when I do have my meditation. So once again, the obligation
never changes. The obligation is always the same. The difference is the opportunity is what I'm
focusing on, which then inspires me to actually take action. So what's one more? Let's give you
one more example, right? One thing that I always say, if you know, I run a company for, you know, School of Online Coaches, where I teach people how to grow coaching businesses online, right? One thing that I always say, if you know, I run a company for, you know,
School of Online Coaches, where I teach people how to grow coaching businesses online, right? So,
you know, sometimes people, in order to get clients, they need to actually get on a phone
call with prospects and they need to talk to them. And sometimes that scares people because,
once again, there might be some rejection. Someone might say no to them. You know, on average,
people, you know, any sales position,
someone's going to say, you're going to hear no more than you're going to hear yes, right?
So the obligation is you got to get on some phone calls. You got to talk to some people.
There's some work that you got to do. And sometimes that doesn't feel good to be rejected.
Sometimes it doesn't feel good when someone says no to you. That's the obligation is that you have
to do that. But what happens though, is you get a client, you have some phone calls with them and you start to change their life. And then they get onto a
phone call with you two, three months down the road. And they're like, oh my God, you changed
my life. You literally changed my life. And you're like, wow, that's incredible. I can't believe I
literally just changed somebody's life. And then when you start to see that, then you stop worrying
about the phone calls that need
to be made and the people that you need to talk to and the fact that some people might say no to you,
and you start focusing on, there's people out there who need me. There's people out there whose
lives I can change. There's people out there who I need to go and find so that I can try to help
them out in some sort of way. Once again, the obligation, it doesn't change. The obligation
is always the same, but instead of focusing on the obligation,
because the human brain is going to always go towards a path of least resistance,
instead of focusing on that, I'm focusing on what the desired end result is.
And here's the thing that you have to realize.
I've been saying this a lot lately,
is there's always things in life that you're going to have to do
in order to get the life you want.
You're not going to wake up and then one day just have your entire life that you've always
wanted handed to you. That would be amazing if that was possible. You just wake up, you're like,
oh my God, I have this life. That's not, that's not going to happen. There's always going to be
things that need to be done in order to create the life that you want to. But at some point,
you've got to grow up and you've got to be an adult and you've got to put the work in.
I've been saying this a lot lately. Some people are like, well, how do I do this? What's the
secret to this? What's the secret to this? I'm like, do you want me to be honest? Just be a
fucking adult. Put in the work. You're going to have to do things sometimes that you don't want
to do. But when you do things you don't want to do, you will eventually get a life that other
people are not able to have. Because it's like the phrase, my very first mentor used to always say this, we will do things now that other people won't so that
later on in life, we can do things that other people can't. Which means that when I put the
work in, when I do the things that I know the majority of people in this world are not going
to do, they're not going to be able to push themselves to do this. They're not going to be
able to push themselves to do that. When I push myself and do the things that are the obligations,
the end result is I will have a life that is completely different than everyone else.
I will have a life that's completely different than every person that I know. Why? Because I
was the person that was willing to step up and do the things that needed to be done when they
needed to be done. I didn't make any excuses. I got it done. I took the action I needed to.
And one day that is when you're going to wake up, look around, and you're going to have the life
that you want. Not because it was gifted to you, but because you decided to get your ass up and
actually start to put the work in. No one is going to come and save you. You have to realize that.
You have to put in the work to get the life that you want. No one is going to come and save you,
but you are the person that has to wake up, put the work in, and eventually, if you do this long enough, you will wake up and you will have the
life that you've always wanted to. But what you got to do is you've got to focus on what it is
that you want. You've got to focus on the goal that you're working towards. You've got to focus
on the vision. You've got to look at your goals every single morning. You've got to rewrite them
every single morning before you go to bed. You've got to rewrite them every single evening. You've got to rewrite them every single morning before you go to bed. You've
got to rewrite them every single evening. You've got to look at your goals and focus on your goals
because too many people focus on what they don't want versus what they do want. But when you focus
on the outcome, the opportunity that you're searching for, it will make it so much easier
if you take the action that you need to in order to create the life that you want. So the end result
is what you need to focus on. Focus on the opportunity, not the
obligation. Still do the obligation and eventually you will get to the place where the opportunity
becomes a reality. So that's what I got for you for today's episode. If you love this episode,
