I'll send you some more information so you can check that out. Today, what I'm going to be talking about is delayed gratification. And the reason why I've spoken about this really quickly, but not as in depth as I really should. The reason why I want to speak about delayed gratification is because of the fact
Starting point is 00:02:03 that I think that we should live our life in delayed gratification is because of the fact that I think that we should live our life in delayed gratification. Successful people live their lives in delayed gratification. Now, most people nowadays, they want everything to happen right away because they have their cell phone right in front of them. They can give them all of the information that they want at any time, any second in everything in the world, it seems like at this point, except for success, is instant. And the problem is most people don't have patience with this instant gratification that they have. There's no patience to what they're doing.
Starting point is 00:02:37 And so the thing about that, that I want you to really realize, is that it's like Tony Robbins says, most people overestimate what they can do in a year, but they underestimate what they can do in a decade. If you want to build something great, if you want to build a great life or a great business or a great family or any of those things, a great bank account, that stuff doesn't happen just overnight. It doesn't happen quickly. And so most people overestimate what they can do in a year, but they underestimate what they can do in a decade. Great things, really great things, great companies. I mean, tell me an extremely great company that was built in a year.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Great things take time. And the reason if you're not successful, you're not where you want to be, the reason why you're not successful, you're not where you want to be, is because you're probably focusing on immediate gratification. People are always focused on what I can do right now. This is the reason why lazy people are lazy. This is the reason why procrastinators procrastinate. And to say that you're a lazy person is basically just saying that you're a human. To say that you are a procrastinator is to basically say that you're a human. To say that you are a procrastinator is to basically say that you're a human. Because if you think of thousands of years ago, it's like 105
Starting point is 00:03:49 degrees right now in Austin. If I was back 10,000 years ago, 20,000 years ago, what would I be doing right now? You and I, all of us, would be sitting in the shade and trying to stay away from all of this heat. So it's natural. It's inherent for a human to be extremely lazy. That's just the way that it goes. Now, that being said, it doesn't mean that you have to be that way. It doesn't mean that your life has to be that way. Just because you are inherently lazy and every human is inherently lazy doesn't mean that you have to stay lazy. And the reason why I say you're focusing on immediate gratification is because you're thinking about right now.
Starting point is 00:04:31 You're thinking about watching Netflix right now, what you can do tonight. You're living for the weekend, all of those things. And this is part of the reason why there's so many people that are overweight, number one in America, but also throughout the world is because they're focusing on immediate gratification. What that food tastes like right now, not what this food is going to do to their health if it builds up and happens over the next 20 years. They're focusing on the immediate moment, being lazy, procrastinating, watching Netflix, sleeping in. All of that is immediate gratification. None of that is delayed gratification.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Delayed gratification is working hard right now and having a good body in the future. Nobody can go to the gym. Think about your life and think about your business and all of these things as going to the gym. You're not going to see results from going to the gym one time. You're not going to see results from going to the gym one time. You're not going to see results from going to the gym for a couple of weeks. But if you go for a few months, you might
Starting point is 00:05:29 start seeing small results. And this is why diets start to happen a little bit and they start to work, but then they don't work long term is because people don't change their entire lifestyle. It's an entire lifestyle change. So delayed gratification is having a good body, being healthy, making money, building a great business, being successful, building a great relationship, building a great family. It's building. You have to start from the bottom up and you have to take your time in these types of things. The reason why people are not as successful as they want to be is because you're thinking about the immediate future. What's happening now? What's happening in the next 20 minutes? What's happening today? What's
Starting point is 00:06:10 happening tomorrow? You need to start thinking about what's happening in the next year. What's happening? What do I want my life to be in 10 years? By working my ass off right now, in 10 years, I might have more free time with my family. And that's one thing that people think about. Excuse me, they don't think about it. They say, well, I really want to build a business. And I know it takes a lot of hard work to build a business. But I don't know if I can do that because I want to spend time with my family. And that makes sense.
Starting point is 00:06:38 I understand that. But are you thinking about spending time with your family right now? Or are you thinking about building an amazing business to get freedom to have more time with your family right now? Or are you thinking about building an amazing business to get freedom to have more time with your family in the future? Think about immediate gratification or delayed gratification. Which one is it? And the crazy thing about it now is we're so obsessed with getting things immediately.
Starting point is 00:07:01 We have Google. We have everything at our fingertips. For those of you guys that are old enough, remember there was a time when you were a kid and you'd be sitting around and you'd say, Hey, I wonder, I wonder how far like the sun is from the moon. And then you'd be like, well, do you know how far it is? I don't know how far it is. And then you, if nobody around you knew it, you'd be like, well, I guess, I guess we'll never know how far it is from the sun to the moon. Like it was just, you didn't get answers right away. Or what you would do is you go, all right, well, let's go to the library
Starting point is 00:07:28 or let's go to one of our friend's houses. Let's find an encyclopedia and see if we could find this information in the encyclopedia. Now it's just immediate. Everything is just immediate. And that's what people feel that they want. And that's partially part of the reason why people say that millennials are, you know, they want everything right now. They're spoiled, all of these things. I don't know if that's necessarily true because there's
Starting point is 00:07:49 also 40, 50, 60-year-old people who aren't successful. So they're also focusing on immediate gratification. There's 40, 50, 60-year-old people that are 40 pounds overweight. And that shows that they're focusing on immediate gratification, not the long-term delayed gratification. So that being said, stop living in the immediate gratification and start living in delayed gratification. One of the best quotes that you can think about for this is Muhammad Ali used to say that he said, I hated training, but I told myself to suffer now and live every single day of your life as a champion. Suffer now and live every single day of your life as a champion. Suffer now and live every single day of your life as a champion.
Starting point is 00:08:33 That is the perfect quote to think about delayed gratification. Delayed gratification is what you need to think about. Live your entire life successful and rich and wealthy and happy. And with all of this freedom, if you work your ass off now, suffer now, suffer for a little while, but build the life that you want to. And also to do these things, you have to have the patience. That's why I did an episode a couple of weeks ago called Have Patience is because you have to realize great things take time. You know you can be great. Everyone knows deep down inside of them that there's an opportunity for them to be great But the problem is they're only focusing on the current moment. They're not focusing on the future. They're not focusing on what they can do
Starting point is 00:09:13 And most people will go home tonight after work and they'll choose a night of netflix every day of the week They'll choose a night of netflix every day of the week over being a millionaire in 10 years. Think about that. People will choose a night of Netflix every single day of the week over being a millionaire in 10 years because they don't realize they're focusing on instant gratification, not delayed gratification. Going out on the weekends, not realizing how that hangover will affect them over the next couple of days after that. And the question that I want you to take from this, the question that I want you to ask yourself constantly to get yourself to your goals is this, whenever you're doing something and you're trying to figure out, is this something that I should be doing? Ask yourself this question, is what I'm
Starting point is 00:10:03 doing right now getting me closer to or further from my question. Is what I'm doing right now getting me closer to or further from my goals? Is what I'm doing right now getting me closer to or further from my goals? Is sitting on the couch at one o'clock on a Tuesday, is that getting me closer to or further from my goals? Ask yourself that question. Is what I'm doing right now, is watching Netflix when I know I should be doing something like building the business that I want, doing the paintings that I want, writing the music that I really want to do. Is watching Netflix getting me closer to or further from that goal of being the professional musician, of being a professional painter, of being whatever it is that you want to be? You have to ask yourself these questions. That's the most important question that you'll
Starting point is 00:10:42 ask to get you to your goals. If it's far away, it's hard to get motivated for. I realize that. It's hard to motivate yourself in the current moment. But if you have a strong enough why of why you want to get to that place, it's a lot easier to get yourself there. So if it's further away, if your answer is, what I'm doing right now, getting me closer to or further from my goals, if it's making you further from your goals, stop immediately. Just cancel it out. Stop doing it. Because what you want is you want to build a perfect life. You want to build an amazing life.
Starting point is 00:11:14 But by focusing on just the immediate gratification, you'll never get there. So I want you to take that with you today and think about the little things that you do where you focus on immediate gratification. That Snickers bar is immediate gratification, but it's not going to build the health and the body that you want. Ask yourself, am I focusing on, by doing this, am I focusing on immediate gratification or am I focusing on delayed gratification? So if you liked this episode, please do me a favor, share it with someone that you know, someone that you love. And I'm going to leave you the same way I leave you every single episode.
