Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor Podcast. I am your host, Rob Dial.
And if you have not yet done so, hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another
podcast episode. And if you're out there and you've never given this podcast a rating and
review on iTunes or Apple Podcasts, please take 30 seconds to a minute. Take out your
phone, go to iTunes or go to Apple Podcasts. Give us a rating and review. It helps more than you
can know so that therefore more people can find us because when we get great reviews, iTunes goes,
hey, this must be good. We should show it to more people and grow organically. So I appreciate you
for doing that. Today, we're going to be talking about why pain is a good thing. Why pain
is something that is actually something that you should pay attention to, that you should listen to,
and why most people usually don't pay attention to pain. So pain is a motivator. People think that
pain is a bad thing. Pain is something that's always telling you something, though, is what
you have to realize. Pain is a lesson. Pain is something coming from's always telling you something, though, is what you have to realize. Pain is a
lesson. Pain is something coming from the universe telling you that something is not right. So,
you know, pain is just the brain receiving a message to stop what you're doing. And its
simplest form, that's all that it is, to make a change and to pay attention to the pain.
So, I'll give you an example, right? If you're walking barefoot and you're coming from the beach
and you have your shoes off and you're walking through the sand and then you get to the cement because
you're walking to your car and it's hot as hell and the bottom of your feet are getting fried off
like some fried chicken, what is that telling you? What is the pain telling you? The pain is telling
you to get off the freaking cement. That's it. Pain is just a message to make a change, to stop doing what you're doing. So it's either, hey, get off of the cement and go back into the
grass or into the sand, or you better run a lot faster to your car. It's really that simple.
The pain is a messenger telling you something. What is it telling you? Well, in that case,
it's telling you, get your ass moving, kid, because your feet are going to fry off. I'll give you another example. If you're sitting down at work for a really long
time and your back starts to ache and you get a whole lot of pain in your back, what is the pain
telling you? Pain's telling you, hey, man, humans are not supposed to sit for this long. You got to
get up and you got to get moving. Get some movement in, get in a different position, whatever it is.
Your pain is telling you that the position that you're in is not good anymore.
You need to move.
If you happen to be inside of the kitchen and you put your hand down
and you happen to put on top of the stove that is on, what is the pain telling you?
The pain's telling you, hey, get your freaking
hand off the stove because you're frying your hand like you're frying your feet. The pain is telling
you something. The pain is telling you that what you are doing is not right. It's not what you're
supposed to be doing. You're not supposed to be walking on hot cement. You're not supposed to be
staying in the exact same position for a really long time sitting. You're not supposed to be walking on hot cement. You're not supposed to be staying in the exact same position for a really long time sitting. You're not supposed to be putting your hand on something
that's extremely hot. The pain is telling you, you got to get moving because what you're doing
right now is not right. It's pretty simple. So what is the pain telling you in your life?
The worry, the frustration, the sadness that you might be feeling, the anxiety.
What is the pain telling you?
It's telling you that something is not right.
Have you identified what is not right?
Think about that for a second.
So if you feel pain or worry or sadness or frustration or any of those things, what is
it attached to? What is the
universe trying to tell you? All of those things are telling you that something is not right.
I don't know what it is. It's going to be different for every single person listening,
but something is not right. You got to get your ass moving in a different direction.
You got to go in a different direction. What you should be doing is saying, okay,
I'm feeling a lot of pain. I'm feeling emotional, intellectual pain. I'm feeling sadness. I'm
feeling anxiety. I'm feeling back pain. I'm feeling knee cramps. I don't even know if you
can get cramps in your knee. I think that's something that you get inside of your muscles.
I'm getting cramps somewhere in my body. My body, my brain, the universe is trying to tell me something. What is it trying
to tell me? To stop doing what I've been doing. Okay, what is that thing that I've been doing
that I need to stop doing? And it's time for me to make a change and do something different.
You know, I always, like, think about this for a second. Let's just make this as ridiculously
simple as we possibly can. Let's say one of your friends comes up to you and they're poking themselves in the eye
and not closing their eyelid. There's poke, poke, poke, poke, poke, poke. And they're like,
hey, every time I do this, it hurts. Ow, ow, ow. Every time I do this, it hurts.
What are you going to say to them? Fucking stop doing it. That's what you're going to tell them.
Just stop doing it then. If it hurts when you poke yourself in the eye, maybe you should stop
doing it. Well, if it's that simple, why don't you get the message? Why don't we get the message
that whatever it is that's causing us pain is a message, is a lesson to stop doing something that we're doing. The question is, what are you doing?
Make a move. Do something different. It's God or the universe or your own infinite intelligence
telling you to get moving, to stop doing it. You got to do something different. It's a messenger.
Pain is a message. It's a message that where you are, what you're doing is not right. A message of
what you're doing is not right. And so many people feel pain and it paralyzes them. They feel worry
or sadness or frustration or anger or something emotionally or intellectually, and they get
paralyzed from the pain. That's the absolute worst thing to do. That's like being like,
you know what? My feet are burning on top of this hot cement. Let me just sit here for a while and
think about how much I hate how much this pain is here. No, there's no way that you would do that.
You'd run towards the place where you're not going to be burning your feet. But so many people,
so many of us, myself included, I've done this many times, where we get into a rut,
we feel a certain way, and we stay in the exact same position because it paralyzes us to
get out of it. And here's what's crazy about it. This is the crazy part about being a human.
We can absolutely hate where we are, or not even just hate, because most of you guys out there,
you don't hate your lives. There's just something that's not right. You're not living up to your
potential. You don't feel right. Your relationship doesn't feel right. Your job doesn't feel right. Something doesn't feel right. And what we do is we sit there and
we think about it so much. And we can be miserable in a situation or really unhappy in a situation,
but we stay there because it's normal, because it's comfortable. And so many people are in misery
or they hate where they are. They're not enjoying their life, they're not living up to their potential,
but they don't like the unknown
and so they'd rather stay in the known
even though the known sucks
than actually get up and start moving.
So would you rather take a step into the unknown
and do something that maybe will get this pain away
or would you rather stay in the same place,
which is not what you want? The beautiful thing about being a human is that you get to make the
choice. There's no one else making the choice. You can't blame your spouse or your parents or
the government or the president or whoever the hell you want to blame. You can't blame anybody
else but yourself. We're all adults here. If you listen to this, we're adults. You have to be able
to go, you know what? Yeah, this is my fault. Whatever it is, this pain that I'm feeling
is my fault. I need to stop doing what I'm doing and I need to move in a different direction.

early decisions can make the difference between
success and failure in your business. One decision that thousands of successful founders have made
is choosing Stripe as their payments platform. Over the past decade, Stripe has made processing
payments simple and borderless, enabling ambitious businesses such as Instacart, Lyft, Shopify,
grow their revenue and expand into new markets quickly. Even here at the Mindset Mentor,
I've been using Stripe for years for our payments, as does the podcast network that we're a part of,
Cast, which has trusted Stripe since 2015. What we love most about it is their APIs and their
docs are incredibly easy to use, which help us integrate Stripe and start accepting payments
in a matter of minutes and not days. It's also freed up our team to focus on the business of
producing high-quality podcast shows
while Stripe handles the business of payments and money movement. So whether you're an online
or in-person retailer, software platform, marketplace, or subscriptions business,
visit Stripe.com to learn more about how Stripe can support your business today.
That's Stripe.com to get started today. And once again, the pain that I'm talking about is not just physical pain.
I'm talking about emotional pain. Sometimes you feel pain in a relationship. And there's that
pain. And I know that I'm about to cause a lot of breakups. Sorry, everybody. It's not my intention.
But you feel that pain of this. I don't know. I love this person, but that doesn't feel right.
I don't know. I love this person, but that doesn't feel right. And there's this pain of if I leave,
I mean, it's like, you know that it's not right. You know deep down that it's not right.
But you would rather stay in a place that's not right because it's comfortable than to actually make a change. I know. I get it. We've all been there in some sort of way. So it's not just a pain of a physical
pain of your feet burning or your hands burning or poking yourself in the eye. It's a pain of like,
I don't want to be here anymore, but I don't want to hurt this person or I don't want to go through
the emotional pain of having to move all of my stuff out and then being alone again. And I'd rather be
pretty unhappy, kind of okay, than go through that again so that I can find my real true happiness.
Sometimes emotional pain as well isn't just relationships with significant others. Sometimes
it's friendships. Sometimes being around somebody that you've been around for a really long time
causes you some sort of emotional pain, but you just don't know what it's like to not have them
in your life. So you'd rather go through the whatever it is, the emotional pain of having
them, of them bringing you down, of them being negative, of them shitting on your dreams or
whatever it is that this person may or may not do, but you just have that familiarity
with them. And the human brain will always want to go with something that's familiar because
the unknown means danger. And we think that there could be possible danger out there.
And you know that if you break up with somebody, whether it's a friend, whether it's a
significant other, you know you're not going to die from that happening, but it's an unknown.
And the brain tries to get away from unknowns because unknowns used to be danger 100,000
years ago.
Now it's like, well, what am I going to do without them?
I'll probably watch some romantic comedy.
Whatever it is that you do when you go, I don't know what you do when you go through
a breakup, right?
So it could be emotional pain.
It could be intellectual pain.
The pain of not living your purpose, where you know there's
something more for you, but you're stuck at a job that you hate, or you're stuck at a job that
maybe you don't even hate it. It's just like, it doesn't really light you on fire. You get one
life and you're telling me that you spend the majority of your days doing something that you
don't love doing? Why? For money? That hurts. I've been there before. I've gone into many depressions before
because I was like, I don't like what I do. I don't like where I am, but I'm stuck because
I'm making good money. I've got bills to pay and I've got a house to pay for. And I've got all of
these things I have to pay for. And I was stuck in a place that I didn't want to be. That is pain
to wake up and be like, fuck, I don't want to be here.
I know what it feels like, but that's the pain that the universe or God or whatever it is that
you believe in is trying to tell you, hey, it's trying to shake you up and say, hey,
this is not what you're supposed to be doing. Move, move, move, whatever that move looks like.
It could be the pain of knowing you're wasting your job at a life
that you hate. It could be, you know, going to a job that just destroys your energy, waking up and
you just don't enjoy. It could be so many things. It could be the anxiety. It could be the worry.
It could be the sadness. It could be the frustration. What is it that you're feeling?
What is the message that you're supposed to be getting from this?
You know, and I always say that the universe is speaking to you in some sort of way.
But the question is, are you listening?
Because usually it starts off as a whisper.
That whisper can be like, hey, you know what?
You should be doing something else.
Hey, you shouldn't be doing this as a job.
Hey, this person isn't treating you the way that you deserve to be treated.
You know, it's like a little whisper. It just barely comes in. And then it gets a little louder,
a little bit more than whisper. And then it gets a little bit louder. And then a year down the road,
two years down the road, it's yelling at you. And you wake up and you're like, I don't want to do this anymore. And there's just a pissed off feeling that you have. And then there's a feeling
that you bring with you your entire day. And then it seems to kind of creep through all areas of your life. And it used to just be like,
you know what? I'm unhappy with my job. And that's okay. At least I'm paying the bills.
And then it starts getting into other parts of your life. And you start being agitated when you
come home from work and you get into an argument with your spouse. That has nothing to do with
your spouse. And then you have a short temper with your children. That has nothing to do with your spouse. And then you have a short temper with your children. That has nothing to do with your children.
It has everything to do that the pain and the anger
and the frustration of doing something
that you don't want to be doing
the majority of your waking hours
is now creeping in and tainting
and poisoning other parts of your life.
It's getting into your relationships.
It's ruining your relationship with your spouse,
with your children.
It's making you feel like crap.
Your weekends aren't even enjoyable anymore.
So you drink so that you don't feel it, whatever it is.
And I always say the universe is kind of speaking.
You got to listen.
You got to listen.
And it's the example of the feathered brick truck.
You know, it's like I had a friend whose dad went to jail.
And he said, you know what?
It's like the feather, the brick, the truck.
He went to jail for drugs for years and years.
And he said, it's like the feather
is like the universe kind of tickling you.
It's that whisper.
It's kind of tickling you like,
hey, you know you shouldn't be dealing drugs.
Hey, you know you shouldn't be doing this.
And then it's like, boom, he gets his first arrest,
but he gets off.
It's like the brick, you know, he gets hit by a brick.
And then you want to get out of the way before
that. You want to make a change before the truck comes. And the truck was him getting locked up for
like 15 years. But if he would have just listened at the feather, he wouldn't have gotten the brick
and he definitely wouldn't have gotten the truck and his life would have been completely different.
So it'll whisper to you, the universal whisper, and it'll whisper and it'll get a little bit
louder and it'll get a bit louder. And then it'll just come and smack the shit out of you. And it's literally so much pain,
physically, emotionally, intellectually, whatever the pain is to tell you what you're doing is not
right. This could be for your health as well. If you're waking up and you're not feeling good,
your stomach is going crazy, and you got irritable bowel syndrome or whatever it is that you got
going on, it's your body saying, dude,
what's going on is not what's supposed to be going on. What you're eating, the way you're
taking care of yourself or not taking care of yourself is not the way that it's supposed to be.
It's just the way that your body will speak to you because your body can't just be like, hey,
hey man, yeah, you shouldn't be eating that. But it'll tell you in other ways. The question is,
are you listening to it? So it's kind of like it happens with health, where it's the feather,
the brick, the truck. It's like, you know what? I probably shouldn't be eating this food. That's
kind of like the feather. I probably should. It's like a whisper. I probably shouldn't.
This food probably isn't the best for me. And then what happens? Oh, well then I end up having
a little bit of a harder time walking up the stairs. My knees start to hurt, a little bit
more pain, a little bit more pain, a little bit more pain. And then what happens? Heart attack.
And then what happens? It could get even worse. And it's like the universe trying to tell you
that you've got to do something different. The question is, are you doing life the way that you
should be doing, the way that you want to be doing? Because the universe will come and it'll
smack you up if you're not listening and doing what you're supposed to be doing.
the universe will come and it'll smack you up if you're not listening and doing what you're supposed to be doing. It'll take your job away. It'll make you lose a loved one. It'll do anything
that it can to wake you up from the unconsciousness that you're stuck in in your life. It'll do
anything that it can to wake you up from the slumber that you're stuck in. Don't wait for the
smack. Don't wait for the truck. It sucks. It's not something to paralyze you.
It's not something to just sit there and start to think about it. So, oh, I don't know what to do.
I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. No, it's telling you, move, figure it out.
You know the answer inside of you. The problem is you're acting like you don't know the answer.
It's not something to paralyze you. It's something to get you moving. It's a message.
Are you listening? It's a lesson. Are you trying to figure out what
it is? Are you listening to the message? Get out a pen and paper and ask yourself,
where is this pain coming from? What am I supposed to be doing? What's the universe
trying to tell me? Too many people ignore the message. Stop ignoring the message.
Listen to it. Figure out what it is. Figure out where it's trying to tell you to move.
Usually, you know what you're supposed to be doing.
You know what you're supposed to be doing to fulfill your potential.
You know what it is that you want to be doing.
You know how you want to spend the majority of your days.
But you're just not doing it because it doesn't feel right.
Too many people ignore the message.
They feel the pain and they don't do anything.
And then they feel pain and they don't do anything. And they feel the pain and they don't do anything. And then they feel pain and they don't do anything.
And they feel the pain and they don't do anything. When they should be pushing through,
when they should be making a change, you have to ask yourself this physical, emotional,
intellectual pain. What is it trying to tell me? There's a message here.
What is the path I'm supposed to be going on that is trying to send me down?
Because I promise you this,
the truck's going to come at some point in time.
I don't want you to get there.
Make a change before it's too late and start creating the life that you want to.
So that's what I got for you for today's episode.
