The Misery Machine - The Horrifying Case of Hailey Marie Owens

Episode Date: September 17, 2026

This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Springfield, Missouri, to discuss the case of Hailey Marie Owens, a 10-year-old girl was abducted, sexually assaulted, and killed by Craig Wood. Her case sparked na...tional outrage, led to significant changes in local law enforcement response times, and inspired legislative reform regarding child safety alerts. Hailey Owens was walking home from a friend's house in broad daylight in northwest Springfield when 45-year-old Craig Wood pulled up next to her in a Ford Ranger. After pretending to ask for directions, he lunged from the vehicle, grabbed her, and threw her into the truck. Crucial eyewitnesses pursued the truck and successfully noted its license plate number, providing it directly to the police. Using the license plate details, law enforcement traced the truck to Craig's home. Upon entering the house hours later, investigators discovered that Hailey had already been raped and shot in the back of the head. It should be noted that Craig Wood was a local school district employee and youth sports coach. In 2017, a jury found Craig guilty of first-degree murder. However, because the jury deadlock occurred during the penalty phase, the final sentencing fell to the judge. In 2018, Greene County Judge Thomas Mountjoy officially sentenced him to death. Craig's legal team filed multiple appeals over the years, arguing ineffective counsel and challenging statements made during the penalty phase. The Missouri Supreme Court unanimously denied his final appeal on January 13, 2026, officially affirming his death sentence. He remains on death row at the Potosi Correctional Center.Support Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/themiserymachineJoin Our Facebook Group: https://t.co/DeSZIIMgXs?amp=1PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/themiserymachineOfficial Merch Store: https://miserymachine-shop.fourthwall.com/Instagram: miserymachinepodcastTwitter: misery_podcast#documentary #themiserymachine #truecrime 🚨 EDUCATIONAL, DOCUMENTARY, SCIENTIFIC, OR ARTISTIC CONTENT DISCLAIMER 🚨CONTENT WARNING: THIS VIDEO IS ABOUT A SENSITIVE TOPIC INVOLVING LOSS OF LIFE. Starting point is 00:00:03 Haley Marie Owens was born on August 18, 2003, in Springfield, Missouri, to parents Marcus and Stacey, who later separated. She had three siblings. The family spent time in Mississippi and Haley eventually moved back to Missouri with her mom and her brother when she was around four or five. At the time of the events of today's story, she was 10 years old. Haley loved painting her fingernails, watching princess movies and playing dress-up. Pink and purple were her favorite colors. She also loved playing in the mud and riding her bike through the creek. Her aunt, Chandra Calhoun, called her My Little Mini Me and My Little Shadow.
Starting point is 00:00:43 Haley stayed at Chandra's place on weekends and over the summer. They went shopping at flea markets and Haley would borrow Chandra's phone to take selfies and make videos. Haley adored Chandra's husband, Doug and loved to listen to his bandplay. Erin Herman, who was another one of Haley's aunt, said, She was a very high percolating energy. She was very bubbly. She could be in a conflicting situation and she had the incredible ability to not be affected by anything. She was absolutely just pure light.
Starting point is 00:01:14 She was pure love. Erin remembered her deep brown eyes and a smile that was almost always there. Haley spent weekends at Aaron's house too and the two of them bonded over shopping and baking. Haley helped make bread and the thing she loved making the most was cupcakes. Aaron said, She had a sweet tooth, bless her little heart. She loved her sugar. Craig Michael Wood lived on East Stanford Street in Springfield.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Worked as a paraprofessional and substitute teacher at Pleasant View Middle School, where he also supervised the in-school suspension room. He had been a middle school football coach for 16 years, as well as coaching high school. His parents, Jim and Regina Wood, lived out in Ash Grove, and he had a dog named Bear. He never married and he had no children and did not socialize much. much with his neighbors. Missouri court records show he pled guilty to possession of a controlled substance in 1990 and was convicted of, and this is the official charge on the record, the illegal
Starting point is 00:02:12 taking of wildlife in 2001, and no, I don't have any additional information about what he took for an animal or what the context was. On February 18, 2014, Haley was walking home from a friend's house. Carlos and Michelle Edwards were in their garage on West Lombard Street. They had just finished up some yard work. As Haley walked past their driveway, a Ford Ranger drove by, turned around, and pulled up alongside her. The driver allegedly wanted directions. As Haley started walking off again, he opened his door and called her back.
Starting point is 00:02:47 And that was when he pulled her inside. Carlos chased the truck down the street yelling at the driver to stop. He said that he might have caught it if it had not been for a drainage ditch. Michelle called 911 and gave the dispatcher a description of the man, in the truck and she gave them the license plate, 1YF-454. Craig's parents held the registration on that truck, though. Craig drove it most of the time.
Starting point is 00:03:11 Eric Reese was working his very first shift as a Springfield Police Patrol lieutenant that night. Sent to Lombard Street right after Michelle's 911 call. He said that, I spent five years working crimes against children, so I know that when you have a stranger abduction, you usually have no more than 90 minutes to recover the child before they're usually murdered.

At the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the request had been left sitting in a fax machine. When the alert did go out, one of Craig's friends texted him about it and asked, you haven't been hunting, have you? What's interesting about this case is that when you talk to people who knew Craig, it doesn't sound like many of them were surprised to hear that he had been caught. About an hour after he abducted Haley, Craig was caught on camera at Walmart buying bleach and drain cleaner,
Starting point is 00:04:38 and he went back a second time that night. He also bought a laundry bag and duct tape, and the receipt for it was in his truck. Around 7 p.m., surveillance video showed him putting Haley's clothes into a dumpster behind a strip mall near his house. A hair found on her clothing was consistent with his. The plate led investigators to Craig's parents out in Ash Grove, and from them to the house on East Stanford Street. Officers waited outside. About 8.30 that evening, Craig pulled into his own driveway on his way back from a Walmart down the road.
Starting point is 00:05:13 As he spotted the officers, Craig climbed out and threw a roll of duct tape into the back of his truck. It was jumpy, reeked of bleach, and told them he knew what they had come for. At police headquarters, Craig admitted that the Ford Ranger was his, but he would not answer a single question about where Haley was. He had a split lower lip with dried blood on it, and dried blood on one of his fingers. Red vertical marks ran across his neck and near his groin. His hat looked like it had bleach on it as well. Said he had been to Walmart twice that day for bleach and drain cleaner, that he had stopped at a laundromat and left his laundry sitting there.
Starting point is 00:05:51 That evening, Craig's father, Jim, turned down his driveway and saw police parked in front of his house. The officers told them they were looking for his son and why. He said, I know this man. This is beyond my imagination. He asked to speak with his son at police headquarters. Jim said, he assured me this was wrong, but I knew better. By that time, it was pretty obvious. Officers headed for the house to search it for Haley.
Starting point is 00:06:18 They went in through the back door. The smell of bleach was wafting up out of the basement and the steps in the floor were wet. A fan had been left running and a torn off piece of duct tape lay on the floor. Lieutenant Reese said that. He had a fan blowing from down there, up the stairs, and it was blowing bleach. You could smell the bleach. It was almost overwhelming. Then they went down the stairs.
Starting point is 00:06:43 According to Lieutenant Reese, there were these three perfectly stacked rubber made tubs right in the middle of the floor. Only one probably being big enough for Haley to fit in. Obviously, it stood out because everything else was wet and they really were. really weren't. We had a debate in the room. The CIS homicide sergeant decided that we back out, because if she was in there, she was obviously not going to be alive. So we better wait and get a search warrant and make it clean and do it the right way versus having an issue later on. I'm not going to say I fully agreed with the decision, but that was not my call. With a warrant, officers went back and secured the house searching every square inch. Craig's bed had no sheathed
Starting point is 00:07:29 or blankets on it. On the dresser sat a folder and inside it were two stories in his own handwriting, depicting a grown man having sexual encounters with 13-year-old girls. The folder also held class schedules for two students at the school where he worked in five photographs of girls who went there. In the basement, they found Haley. She was inside the one tub big enough to hold her, wrapped in black plastic bags with no clothes on. Rigor Mortis had already stiffened her body. Ailey was soaked in what smelled like bleach, and there was bruising on her lips, her cheek and ear.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Abrasions ran all the way around her wrists. A 22-caliber shell casing was lying on the basement floor. They had been fired from a rifle, which was subsequently found in a gun safe in the storage room. Tom Vanderberg of the Green County Medical Examiner's office observed the basement as well. He noted the room smelled like bleach and that Haley's body was cold, soaked through, that her hair was a tangled mess. When he moved her hair aside, he noticed what appeared to be a gunshot wound at the back of Haley's head.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Dr. Carl Stacey, the forensic pathologist, oversaw Haley's autopsy. There were blunt force injuries to her face, and Dr. Stacey said the abrasions on her arms indicated that she had fought against whatever was binding her. severe tearing and bruising in Haley's body was present consistent with S.A. Her cause of death, according to Dr. Stacey, was the gunshot wound to her head. He called it a loose contact wound, and the gun had been impartial contact when it fired. Dr. Stacey said the wound would have caused instantaneous unconsciousness, but could not confirm if Haley died instantly or not. At around 5.30 the next morning, Haley's stepdad called her Aunt Chandra.
Starting point is 00:09:27 Later recalled, I walked to the living room, and I just collapsed on the floor. I was crying, and I don't remember a whole lot for a few hours. Everybody said I was just kind of comatose, just out of it. Her Aunt Aaron got a call from a relative and got in her car and just started driving around Springfield. She said, I didn't have a strategy. I felt cold and dead inside. It was just going through the motions, praying, was praying for mercy. Craig Michael Wood was charged with first-degree murder, child kidnapping, first-degree rape, and sobate me.
Starting point is 00:10:00 He sat in the Green County Jail with no bond set, where he pled not guilty. When it came time for trial, the state went forward on the murder charge alone. The case was heard in Green County's 31st Judicial Circuit in front of Judge Thomas Mountjoy. And because of how much coverage the case had gotten in Springfield, the jury was brought in from Platt County. Craig was represented by two assistant public defenders, Patrick Berrigan and Thomas Jacques Winnow. Green County prosecutor Dan Patterson tried the case, along with attorneys Todd Myers and Elizabeth Kiesveter Fax. Before trial, Craig offered to plead guilty and take life without parole if the state would drop the death penalty. At the time Haley's mother, Stacey, wanted them to take it.
Starting point is 00:10:51 On April 1, 2017, she wrote a letter to Prosecutor Patterson, which read, I am writing to request your mercy, mercy for me, for my family, and for the memory of my daughter, Haley Owens. You have the power to end my suffering. Please accept a plea deal for life without the possibility of parole in Craigwood's case. Then I can focus on rebuilding my life. Stacey also told reporters, I don't want to go through the trial because I don't want to relive the nightmare.
Starting point is 00:11:19 I'm never going to be over it. But just re-seeing it is going to make it ten times worse. At a hearing before the trial, Stacey said that if she were put in front of the jury, she would tell them she wanted life without parole, that her answer would be the same even if the state insisted on going to trial. Prosecutor Patterson objected. He cited a Missouri Supreme Court case, which holds that a family member's opinion about punishment is irrelevant.
Starting point is 00:11:47 He argued that opinions for or against death do not belong in front of a jury. Judge Mountjoy kept it out, and no member of Haley's family ever told the jury what sentence they wanted. So to be very clear here, despite the victim's mother, pleading to not be traumatized by a trial and asking that her daughter's murderer get life without parole, the prosecutor said, no, let's traumatize you, let's waste taxpayer money, and let's push for a trial where your daughter's murderer could beat the trial and walk a free man or even a mistrial on a technicality and have to extend the process into a retrial. Now, I know the chance of Craig getting a not guilty verdict is astronomically low.
Starting point is 00:12:27 But what are we doing here? Is going to trial in this case really justice, especially when you have a guaranteed chance to make sure that this scumbag dies in prison? In the many years we've covered true crime cases, I have never seen a prosecutor essentially put the middle finger in a family's face and insist on wasting everybody's time. In his opening statement, Craig's defense attorney argued that Craig had not deliberated before killing Haley. Through the entire guilt phase, that was his entire defense, not that he really had much to work with anyways. The third day, Judge Mountjoy warned the room that the testimony was about to get graphic and asked anyone who might react to leave.
Starting point is 00:13:08 he said, there cannot be any emotional outbursts crying anything that will distract the jury today. Stacey was not there that day, but other relatives sat in the front row. Photographs of Haley's body were provided to the jury in a folder and were not shown to the rest of the courtroom. At least four of the jurors started crying after being shown her body. According to Prosecutor Patterson, the evidence showed them that Haley was on her knees and bound when she was killed. told the courtroom he deliberately executed her. The defense attorney spoke slowly to the jurors without notes or any visual aids. Called what Craig did horrible, awful, terrible, and said,
Starting point is 00:13:48 I can't even imagine honestly the suffering of this little girl's mother and family. He argued that a man with a plan doesn't take a child in broad daylight wearing no disguise. Stated claim that Craig picked the 22 because it was the quietest gun in the house. He actually had several guns in his. is safe of a larger caliber. The attorney then asked the jury, if you really wanted to be quiet, why are you shooting a gun
Starting point is 00:14:13 at all? According to the defense, no crime is excused by drugs, but drugs can explain how a crime happens. He said that the meth found in Craig's house brought out these demons he's been suppressing. His last question of the jury was,

Prosecutor Patterson got the last word in, and he told the jury that first-degree murder does not require a plan, and that binding a child, putting a rifle against her head,
Starting point is 00:16:15 and pulling the trigger is deliberation on its own. The jury only needed about an hour. On November 2nd, 2017, they found Craig Wood guilty of murder in the first degree. The penalty phase started the next morning. The state called on Haley's teacher, her great-grandmother, two of her aunts, her pastor, and the mother of one of her friends to provide victim impact statements. Her teacher, Tara Tharp said,
Starting point is 00:16:43 I didn't know what I was supposed to do. We can't just go and teach math. Just go and do a reading class. Haley's not there. Can't act like it didn't happen. Haley's great grandmother read a poem into the record called God Will Comfort You, which a woman Louisiana had sent to her. Stacey skipped that day and said she was afraid it would be too hard to sit through.
Starting point is 00:17:04 She had sat through dozens of court appearances over three and a half years by then. With the trial nearly over, she said she trusted the jury and would be at peace with either sentence. The defense called in Craig's parents, three of his friends, a priest, and two guards from the Green County Jail. His parents talked about his depression and his substance use, said he had always kept a job and had nothing serious on the record. The friends said his arrest made no sense to them, that this was not the man that they knew. and none of them had any idea he had fantasies about teenage girls. One of them said that Craig had pulled a man out of a burning apartment. The priest said Craig had come back to his faith behind bars and was reading scripture,
Starting point is 00:17:47 and that the two of them sat down regularly to go over what he had done. Guard said he had hoarded pills at one point and what appeared to be an attempt to remove himself from the earth, and apart from that, he gave them no trouble. In closing, prosecutor Patterson said, with your verdict, sentencing him to the ultimate punishment, you speak for Haley. The defense objected, but Prosecutor Patterson kept going. You speak for her family, even though the prosecutor himself couldn't even listen to her family when they begged him not to go forth with the trial. The defense objected a second time and argued that what he was saying
Starting point is 00:18:21 improperly attributes the decision regarding life or death to Haley Owens and her family. The judge overruled him. On November 6, 2017, the jury had unanimously found six statutory aggravating circumstances. The first was that the murder involved torture and depravity of mind, and as a result was outrageously and wantonly vile, horrible, and inhumane. Under that same circumstance, the jury found that Craig killed Haley after she was bound or otherwise rendered helpless, showing a callous disregard for the sanctity of all human life. They found that the murder was committed for the purpose of avoiding arrest and that it was committed while he was engaged in kidnapping.
Starting point is 00:19:01 The last one was that Haley was a witness or a potential witness in a pending investigation into her own kidnapping. The jury also did not unanimously find that the mitigation outweighed the aggravation, and they could not agree on the punishment. Missouri is one of two states, along with Indiana, where a jury deadlocking at sentencing does not automatically mean a life sentence. The jury cannot agree, the judge therefore decides. On January 11, 2018, Judge Mountjoy read all six aggravators into the record and said he accepted and agreed with every single one of them.
Starting point is 00:19:37 Found the mitigation was not sufficient enough to outweigh them. He said, I'd have to say there was, I think, in this case, a real factor of a death of innocence. The death of innocence of a 10-year-old little girl. But also death of innocence for a neighborhood, for a community, for a family. that the words of the jury and what the court has just read as far as those aggravating circumstances are not just words or hoops to be jumped through. They are, in fact, what happened in this case and what happened to this little girl. It is an exceptional case, an extreme case, I think, in all regards.
Starting point is 00:20:13 Then Judge Mountjoy asked Craig to stand and asked him whether there was any legal reason he should not be sentenced. Craig said, no, sir. Judge Mountjoy then told him, for the offense of murder in the first degree, the court assesses and declares punishment to be death for the murder of Haley Owens. It was ordered to pay court costs and a $68 civil judgment for the crime victim compensation fund. He was sent to death row at the Potosi Correctional Center outside Mineral Point. Missouri Supreme Court affirmed the conviction in the death sentence on July 16th, 2019. November of 2019, Craig filed a six-page motion on his own, and in March of 2020, with an attorney's help,
Starting point is 00:20:51 he filed a 231-page amendment that raised 22 claims. As Mountjoy came out of retirement in March of 2024 to hear three days of evidence and then denied it. January 13, 26, Missouri Supreme Court affirmed again seven to nothing, and a rehearing was denied in February. In May of 2026, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh granted his attorney an extension until June 24th to ask the Supreme Court. to take the case. Joe Bridges did not know Haley. He lived on the west side of Springfield and promoted music. He was raising his son on his own.
Starting point is 00:21:31 The night Haley was kidnapped, Joe used social media to help organize volunteers who wanted to go look for her. In the middle of the night, a police officer messaged him and told him to call it off. The next morning, while he was getting his eight-year-old son ready for school, the boy's eyes filled up with tears and he told his dad, you need to do something.
Starting point is 00:21:51 Once he was alone, Joe cried for 30 minutes. Then he made a Facebook event for a small candlelight march on commercial street for whatever friends might be feeling the same thing he was. He took a nap. When he got back up to his computer that afternoon, 3,000 people had signed up. Joe said, I was like, whoa, this is a little more than 100 friends. Over the next few days, Joe was meeting with the mayor and the police chief and answering questions on Facebook. He also had to deal with the Westboro Baptist Church, which had announced that its members would show up for whatever reason to protest a march for a murdered 10-year-old girl. Joe did not own a car, so on the day of the march, he walked to Commercial Street.
Starting point is 00:22:36 He said, it was so overwhelming. I'm walking up and down the street saying we're here for peace, love, and unity. Peace, love, and unity. Keep it positive. Haley's loved ones spent years working to change the way Missouri runs its Amber Alert system. Markes Owens, Haley's father, and Jim Wood, Craig's father, worked on it together. On July 11th, 2019, Governor Mike Parson signed Haley's law.
Starting point is 00:26:23 It requires the Amber Alert system to be run through what they call mules, Missouri uniform law enforcement system. That ends the handwritten paperwork and the faxing. Alerts can now carry clickable links, and the state's Amber Alert Oversight Committee has to meet every year. With a signing, Marcus and Jim spoke at a news conference back in Springfield. Haley's brother said in a statement, there was no excuse for Highway Patrol's failure to provide links to the public during these alerts. Haley's visitation was held at Ridgecrest Baptist Church and her funeral, was held the next day, with Pastor Pat Finley officiating.
