Free agency is here as Verno and Jacoby react to all the news, starting with the reporting that LeBron James is set to move on from the Lakers and join a new team next season. They then debate whether... Kawhi Leonard’s return to the Raptors actually moves the needle for them or the Clippers, and Verno then shares his disappointment with how Ja Morant’s time in Memphis ended. Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to The Mismatch. I'm Chris Vernon and joining me as he does every week from the ringer.com is Dave Jacoby. Jacoby. Verno Free agency has begun, but it does also feel like it has just begun. You know, it's weird because I think we were all expecting me. I think for so many years we got used to as soon as that free agency ticker hit, you were ready for the woe's tweets to just start dropping one hour. after another and Shams tweets and Mark Stein tweet.
Starting point is 00:00:50 And that is just not the experience we have nowadays at all. Things have changed. It's like drip, drip, drip, tripe, Keon Ellis, 18 million bucks. With the nuts. I mean, Kobe Sanders has signed with the clippers. It's like drip, drip, drip. And it's obviously, look, and I think that's in large part
Starting point is 00:01:13 because of the restructuring of NBA finances and the way teams do this team building, that now trades are the thing. And we have seen now an offseason that included an incredible amount of movement. It is not going to be via the free agency market, but as teams are restructuring their own rosters, we're going to have lamello ball on a different team, John Morant on a different team, Kauai Leonard on a different team
Starting point is 00:01:43 LeBron James on a different team Janice on Tocompo on a different team So it is not While free agency has not been some big splash And we didn't necessarily expect it to be What has been a big splash is the trade market And it very well may continue to
Starting point is 00:01:59 This episode of The Mismatch Is presented to you by WeatherTech Everyone knows winter is the MVP in making a mess You don't need WeatherTech floor liners in the summer unless you hit the beach or go camping, then you'd want a cargo liner. Or a road trip goes sideways. Catchup goes rogue.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Ice cream drips. Yeah, you'd be pretty happy about those weather tech seat protectors. So just to be clear, as the mud you're inevitably going to step in the summer, you don't need weather tech unless you plan on doing summer. So visit weathertech.com today.
Starting point is 00:02:40 We'll start with one that is not a trade yet, but will eventually be a free agent signing. And that is the news that came down that LeBron James informed the Lakers. He's done with the Lakers. I saw many O'Pine that he should be awarded father of the year after Brony James' contract of $2.3 million became guaranteed yesterday. And then he informed the team today that he was. is no longer going to be a part of the Lakers. But, you know, where there's smoke, there's fire.
Starting point is 00:03:15 There's been a bunch of this warrior stuff. There was the warriors have their sights on, you know, fancy themselves as maybe a landing spot for both LeBron and Anthony Davis and all this kind of stuff. And so I think by the time we got to today, though it was breaking news, it wasn't surprising to anyone after the Reeves contract last week. And then the news that had been slowly trickling out that LeBron James could very well be wearing a different uniform that that's where we're at
Starting point is 00:03:46 and I now everybody will just sit around and wait to find out where the biggest name of the free agent ends up. So you know I produced Game Over with Maskell and Mitch Paul. Oh, you do? And I do. And this information came out and obviously you start scrambling. And Rich is in London. He's at Wimbledon.
Starting point is 00:04:07 And I'm sure he's working his phone. I don't think it's a vacation day. for Mr. Paul. But he did sort of like a 10-minute hit with Max about this decision and how it works. And you can all listen to that tomorrow morning. There's a social clip out already. But one thing I found really interesting about it
Starting point is 00:04:22 is, you know, Rich chooses his words carefully. And I think the Lakers were the team that could offer him the most money. Birds rights, yada, yada, yada, cat space, yada, yada. And I think that he said that in LeBron's decision, he's going to prioritize happiness. And again, none of this is something that you can't listen to on Game Over.
Starting point is 00:04:42 I'm not like violating personal relationships. Prioritize happiness, not money, wants to compete for a championship. None of this is crazy. But I think the prioritized happiness part is interesting because the thing about LeBron, which makes this offseason so tricky, which is why I've said on this podcast so many times,
Starting point is 00:05:01 there's no like natural dance partner, is he's worth a lot of money. Like his production level and locker room leadership and on-court intelligence and just like numbers he puts up, like he is like a $30 million basketball player. But if you pay LeBron $30 million, then you sort of take him out of that compete area.
Starting point is 00:05:22 You know, there's not a lot of teams that could take in LeBron and still have a competitive roster to compete with the 2006 champion Nix and other teams that might also compete for the championship. So I found that to be interesting. It just sort of felt like a little bit of a concession of, you know what, maybe we're not going to get paid what we're worth, but happiness is the priority. And then you start thinking about happiness and the potential teams. We all know who they are.
Starting point is 00:05:48 We'll walk through them. But there are some leaders in the clubhouse. Well, let's start by just putting a bow on the ending of this in L.A. If you could all go back in time to the day after Luke Adonchich got traded. The end. No, but it was like LeBron and Luca together, and it was a dud. You know, they got mowed by the timber wolves. And then this past year, in the worst basketball series I've ever watched in my life,
Starting point is 00:06:28 the hobbled Lakers versus the hobbled rockets, they were able to get past them only to get mowed down by the thunder. But Luca was hurt, though. So I wouldn't call Luca and LeBron a dud. I don't think that's fair. No, no, no. Because Luca, it wasn't Luca and LeBron. But that is the way this goes, though, Jacoby.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Like, somebody is going to get hurt. I mean, I'm saying, at when they first got together, it's like, oh, my God, they're going to have Luca and LeBron. And what it netted was, I mean, two very mediocre seasons. And now they move on to the Luke there's good reason why they were mediocre season. It's kind of like Kyrie and James Hardin and Kevin Durant on the net. It's like, yeah, it never worked out, but they never played together. So it's not the players fault. It doesn't mean they don't work together.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Yeah, of course. They didn't play together. Luca got hurt. Right. And now it will be a Luca operation. I guess a Luca and Reeves operation in L.A. I disagree with the Reeves signing, but whatever, we can move on. And regarding what?
Starting point is 00:07:34 you think about LeBron James going forward and which of the teams you think would be, which is the best for winning and which is the best for us as the viewers? And are those the same? Two obvious answers. Okay. Winning is the spurs for vibes and like the NBA is the Warriors. Those are obvious clear answers. And you are not persuaded at all.
Starting point is 00:08:04 by a possible homecoming. The wrap it up in Cleveland. The third iteration. Incomeming in Cleveland. I'm not inspired. No. Okay.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Are you? Look, I am very intrigued by this whole Warriors thing, which was out there. And then we were dealt a bunch of news this afternoon saying the Wizards aren't trading Anthony Davis so it's like
Starting point is 00:08:41 well what was that all about like I think everybody opined oh clutch had something you know Anthony Davis and Draymond Green and LeBron James had this idea and LeBron Draymond and AD are all
Starting point is 00:08:57 clutch clients right and we had this idea and we're going to all whatever and like the I mean maybe what was forgotten is the wizards would have to say in this yeah
Starting point is 00:09:16 like take on Jimmy Butler yeah no actually we don't want to do that we would actually rather have Anthony Davis that's what we would prefer to do and so you do wonder if these like talks that you feel like were obviously had maybe when they were filming their hilarious prank video of Trayvon Green at one point on Anthony Davis's hit Turner show.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Which no one can name, including myself. Maybe those conversations, it all sounds great. And then even when it was being reported, it was like, oh, they're all going to team up. But there was never like this acceptance that like actually they're going to have to get cooperation from the wizards. Wizards. And then by this afternoon, it was very clear, there's no cooperation from the wizard. And then it turned into, okay, well, LeBron's just going to, he's just going to sit back and hear everybody's pitch. He's going to be a legitimate free agent.
Starting point is 00:10:17 And then he's going to lay it all out. Then he's going to decide. But be clear, based on happenings, not money. So don't try to offer him more money. Because this is a happiness decision. And so he's going to lay it all out and say, where will make me the most happy? And I do feel, just given as a follower of his,
Starting point is 00:10:44 this guy is so hardcore into golf right now. Oh. I think he needs to go somewhere he can golf. No. You know me? He said on the pot, he's like, there is indoor golf. so everything's on the table. He literally said that on the pot.
Starting point is 00:11:03 He did? Yeah. I mean, it seems like his passion right now is very clearly this sport that he has dove headfirst into. Yes. And so I think just having who can offer him the best membership slash golf course availability. If you are putting together a deck. So right now, Rich said he spoke to 12 to 14 teams. If you're putting together a pitch deck, there's page one should be like, here are your golfing opportunity.
Starting point is 00:11:33 Yes. These are the courses I can get you to. We have a helicopter. These are the other courses I get you to two within 30 to 40 minutes. Like, this will be your golf life. Okay, next page, let's talk about basketball. Right. So I think the Warriors have the lead.
Starting point is 00:11:48 Unbelievable courses. No, Bruno. Bruno. Wine country. Oh, and the other thing is that. Another passion. No, you're right. And he loves Curry.
Starting point is 00:11:57 and loved playing with him. All the basketball stuff is whatever. Oh, well, here's the other thing. I will tell you as someone who had friends on that Golden State staff for many years, these guys, that's one of the very few teams, like, even when they would come to Memphis, they would be at one of the local courses. Yeah, I think it was like an Igadala-led thing. And Curry, obviously, from anyone from the, if you're from a character,
Starting point is 00:12:27 Carolina State, you're graded golf. You're just born great a call. It's like having a jump shot being from Indiana. Kerr was part of it too, before the back stuff. Yes. Oh, yeah. They were all, even when they were at their apex, this is one of the teams that, like, they had a bunch of guys carry their clubs and they would go and play.
Starting point is 00:12:43 Even when they were on the road, they would play after shootarounds or they would just cancel shootarounds and they would go find a golf course somewhere. Like a month in advance, of course, would get a call. So, I mean, I think when you could very well see. LeBron James and Steph Curry playing just all, not only in NBA markets and filling up every arena they go to if they're healthy, also appearing on local golf courses in every NBA market throughout next season. Because they both have this extreme passion.
Starting point is 00:13:16 I'm kind of, I have no insight information. I'm kind of convinced it's the Warriors. They signed Porzingis. They sign Horford. Draymond declined, clutch client. the Jimmy part's interesting because to have that much money tied up
Starting point is 00:13:29 in an asset that is as distressed as he is, no fault of his, is a little tricky for a LeBron James championship run. Like, is he going to be healthy come late regular season? I don't know. Okay, what if I sold you on this?
Starting point is 00:13:43 What if I sold you on? And again, I understand they're older now, who knows? But what you could say is, hey, LeBron James gets you by for a long time and then you can nurse this Jimmy Butler injury back and then he's back for when it matters. As long as you can get a, you know, getting the mix and then by the time you get to that last
Starting point is 00:14:12 playoff run, the only thing that matters is that you've got four of them healthy. And even then, if you lost somebody by then, now you got Jimmy Butler coming back. I mean, I dig warriors too. I do. It makes a lot of sense. I'm honestly, like, I'm not joking about the golf thing. As someone who has gotten the same bug, like,
Starting point is 00:14:34 it takes over your life. He's prioritizing happiness. That's it. And that's what makes him happy right now. I think he wouldn't put it above family, but probably second. You know what I mean? He's playing every day. Every day.
Starting point is 00:14:49 He's at a golf course or at a range or somewhere. like it's become a passion. So I think so too. And the AD thing, obviously, you know, they weren't getting in a cooperation. I think that's just the Warriors front office be like, these are cute rumors and everything. But like, what's the package?
Starting point is 00:15:05 An intro Jimmy Butler and what now? Right. For Anthony Davis? Yeah. Like what? Like it's almost good for everybody else and everyone forgot to talk to the the wizards and be like, yeah. What's in it for us?
Starting point is 00:15:18 Okay. And I will say one quick thing. that it's very interesting is Brian Winhorse had gone on like a Cleveland radio station earlier today and said something to the effect of Cleveland is big game hunting. I'm paraphrasing here, but like, you know, they got some big things on the horizon, but I can't really say they're trying to make some stuff happen. And then I watched this ESPN free agency special that they put on tonight because I just wanted to hear at what point is Windhorst going to say something about this. And then it got like, they do this perk big board and Kendrick Perkins is, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:57 giving where he thinks guys should go. And at one point he says J. LeBron to the Houston Rockets. And then Win Hors stops him and walks in and he's like, what if we changed that to the cats? And I was like, well, hold on now. And then he's like, and they have been reluctant to give up Evan Mobile and even Evan Mobley and like a Jalen Brown deal. But what if I told you that you were they were trading Evan Mobley
Starting point is 00:16:28 and I think Sam Merrill was the other guy to make the money work to Boston and they would be willing to give it up because that would then give them the opportunity to get at the table with LeBron James and say is this
Starting point is 00:16:43 something you would like to do? And then they could give him the mid-level, whatever, the $6 million or whatever. The finances are really tricky for the calves. It is, but they figured it out. And I was like it almost, it sounded like Windhorst was throwing out there, was throwing out there that the calves, that that's a line of thinking. Like, you don't just come up with that out of nowhere, right?
Starting point is 00:17:10 That a line of thinking would be, if we could extract Jalen Brown, that would intrigue LeBron James when he's making. his free agency decision because if he's trying to win a championship and going back to home and, you know, that's the swan song, right? He's like he ends it in Cleveland and maybe, and not only ends it in Cleveland, but ends it in Cleveland with a chance, like a very real chance at a title, right? Yeah. If he's got that crew.
Starting point is 00:17:38 So I thought that was intriguing and it was it was worthwhile bringing up because that was because I do not think he would go to Cleveland. as currently constructed. It takes a ton of maneuvering on Cleveland side that I don't even want to get into to do that. It also decimates the front court to a point, and it makes it difficult to resign James Harden. He'd have to take way less money.
Starting point is 00:18:01 There's a lot that needs to happen for that to happen. It's not impossible, but it just does feel like the Warriors are sitting right there, and if you're LeBron James, is that a better situation in terms of happiness, not money, than the Warriors. The words just seem like a, it's Steve Kerr, Steph Curry, Draymond Green, knows his relationship there, and, you know, Horford, Prisengis, Pajemsky, and, you know, the young pieces that they have, like the posts and the, you know. I think I would be surprised if it's not one of those two, though.
Starting point is 00:18:34 I do. I love Bill's idea about the Spurs, to be honest with you. I just love it. I love it. I love it so much. It doesn't make sense. But I absolutely love it. But just like, let me just pitch.
Starting point is 00:18:44 So they can give the same amount of money, like the $15 million that the Warriors can give, the Spurs can give. Explain this to me. Why not? A little bit like Chris Paul did when he joined the Spurs. Be like, this is going to be the future phase of the league.
Starting point is 00:18:59 This is going to be sort of like the next goat conversation guy. This is a future top 10 all-time player projected. Why not get a little piece of that? Like, why not get yourself involved with this young, young Nuculus that just is looking for veteran leadership and a piece that's that's not Harrison Barnes to be the adult on the floor. I thought youth was a big problem for them in the finals, especially Wembe. And I just feel like they were missing what LeBron provides.
Starting point is 00:19:31 And he fits into that team so well. And they are poised for a championship run without him and add him, they're probably favorites. wouldn't that be a nice swan song to LeBron's career? I mean, it certainly would be an intriguing watch. It just feels odd. Why? Because of the, because he is the culture. He is, you know, he sucks the air out of the room, you know, because of his, I mean,
Starting point is 00:20:06 he's the all-time leading score in NBA history, that it becomes a LeBron operation. And that is not. Maybe that's good for Wemby. Maybe that's what Wemby means. But that is not what the Spurs have been. Their whole thing is no one is bigger than the program. That's their whole thing. And every star they've had has adjusted to that.
Starting point is 00:20:30 And every player they've had has adjusted to that. And anyone that wants to get outside of those lines is no longer within those lines. So it's not, they don't function. in the same way that other organizations do. And he would be by far, I mean, it is, look, there's a reason why today everything on the timeline is about LeBron James and why ESPN has done literally five consecutive hours of program. It's on my TV right now. This is hour five, and it's probably longer.
Starting point is 00:21:09 That's just when how long it's been on my team. to hour five of programming about LeBron James. What's interesting is like I, you know, I talked to Rich Paul and he said this into microphones. I'm not violating any privacy. It's going to be a process. Like it's not like they know what's going to happen. And it's like, all right, free agency's open.
Starting point is 00:21:29 Everyone put together your little decks and your toys and your monogram pillows and invite me over and put it together. Tell me where I'm going to be playing golf. The only thing about San Antonio from a happiness standpoint, point. I really had a great time there and I enjoyed it. It is a smaller town than San Francisco and Los Angeles. Kauai Leonard got traded. And LeBron James just like trumped that by telling the Lakers he's no longer going to be a Lakers.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Which isn't that surprising news. I didn't see him staying with the Lakers. But on any other day, it would be like, Quay Leonard is going to where he wanted to. championship. Kauai Leonard is going back to Toronto. Like, yeah, I know. He won the title and then just walked and then laughed.
Starting point is 00:22:20 You don't usually leave the place that you won the title and were finals MVP, right? And it was like, now he's going back to Toronto. And it was like, he just, if he's going somewhere, he wants to be somewhere, he's already been. I thought that was so funny. It was like, so San Antonio or Toronto, because he ain't trying to. to learn a new city. Well, I also think that he wanted to go somewhere where he was going to be offered an extension.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Oh, for sure. But also... I think that's where his head's up. Also funny that they mentioned the two teams that he had played for before, right? He does not seem like a, hey, guys, I'm new in town kind of guy. No, but it's also unceremoniously left
Starting point is 00:23:04 both places. Like, he... Right. He obviously won in Toronto, but it's kind of like, all right, you're welcome. Peace. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:23:11 And we all know how San Antonio ended. So it's not like he has great relationships with both of these franchises. Brandon Ingram, who had just a, like, monumental flameout in the playoffs. That was tough. It was tough. Just tough. Dick. We'll talk about Jalen Dern later, but, yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:32 Which at least we'll get Dick jokes in L.A. now. Love Dick jokes. Grady Dick has been a huge first round disappointment. so far. But Dick in the Dome is a whole different thing. You know what I mean? It's a whole different sensation. You have Dick in the Dome.
Starting point is 00:23:48 Two first, two seconds, and a pick swap. So. I mean, I just don't even, am I wrong here? I don't care about anything the Clippers got in that trade. I honestly, I'm going to say something wild. I don't care about either sides of this trade. I don't think this moves the needle really that much in either way. Oh, for Toronto, it does for sure.
Starting point is 00:24:09 It does. Toronto will be better this year than they were last year. They will be better, but I don't see them as competing for, I don't see them in the Eastern Conference Finals. Do you? I mean, depends. Do you? Are they still rolling out Jacob Pertle?
Starting point is 00:24:24 They're still rolling out, RJ Barrett, and they're still rolling out. Colomery Boyles, I love him. Quickly was hurt. Love CMB. I love CNB, you know, Barnes, you know, I like Darko. Barnes, C&B, and Kauai are kind of like different versions. of the same player at different ages. But I liked it, but they are very unique.
Starting point is 00:24:44 You know what I mean? But this is like them from three years ago where they were all six, eight wings. They put out five of them and like go ahead and deal with it. Yeah, I mean, like, it is like, I swear to God, CMB, Barnes, if you squit CMB Barnes and Kauai are just the same player four years apart from each other. Yeah. I will miss Matt Devlin saying the notorious B.I.3. I'm going to miss that.
Starting point is 00:25:09 It's the only thing about Brandon Ingram no longer being a raptor that I'll miss. Longer flight for Glorilla to get to games. But she'll be in L.A. more. He will be in L.A. more. Yeah. So it's probably going to, she'll be a frequenter
Starting point is 00:25:26 to the Intuit Dome. But this one didn't really like really change how I feel about each franchise very much. Really? I see. It does change how I feel about Toronto. If you quietly had a career I'm saying if he plays anything like that, that's a lot of good players they've got around him.
Starting point is 00:25:47 And if he plays anything like he did last year, that team could be a high seed. I really wish they had someone I believed in in the front court. Like just a rim protecting big. They didn't have to score. Like you put like Gobert there. Like no one's scoring on them. That pertal contract is just abominable.
Starting point is 00:26:08 It's just killer. It's an abomination. It's killer. It really is. Honestly. And I think quickly coming back is a good point because they were missing him and they missed his guard play. And RJ2. I think that team will be fun.
Starting point is 00:26:23 I think that team would be pretty good. I think so too. I would not be surprised if they were number three in the Easter conference at the end of the season. Somebody posted the graphic of like the Clippers lineup for next year. I was like, that sucks. Well, I think the Clippers. are not necessarily trying to contend this year. I think they're just trying to get out.
Starting point is 00:26:46 They're trying to age. They're trying to downgrade and age. Well, you've seen these two things about he's trying to flee the country. All the Kawhi jokes about him trying to flee the country. I mean, this investigation is just ongoing. God damn. And then?
Starting point is 00:27:02 Guess what? Guilty. They did it. The investigation over. How about this? The law firm of Jacoby Invernaus says it's over. He did it. Punish him. Do you see Pablo Tori? obviously, he started all this. But he posted one reminder about Kauai and Toronto. Outgoing Raptor's owner, Larry Tannenbaum,
Starting point is 00:27:21 is the chairman of the NBA Board of Governors. Per Michael Grange in last year, he wrote this. It will be Tannenbaum, who will presumably have a voice in what, if any, sanctions are leveled against Balmer and the Clippers. I don't hear anything about sanctions leveled against Kauai and his ability to play for the Raptors. I don't think they make this deal. I think that you don't make this deal
Starting point is 00:27:49 unless you have some sort of understanding, not a guarantee, but an understanding that he will be playing for the Raptors next season. And I think if there are sanctions levied, which there will be, they'll be against the clippers, it'll be draft capital and fines and whatnot, but it won't be like Kauai can't play basketball anymore.
Starting point is 00:28:08 What I'm saying is, do you think there is any coincidence that that's the team he went back to. When, when there, the original, the, no, the original thing that was floated was that, and this is what is alleged, the clippers gave him the biggest contract they could give him, but made him whole of what he would have gotten if he would have resigned with his team, with this cockamamie thing. I see what you're saying.
Starting point is 00:28:45 I think it's coincidental. I think it is coincidental. And so now it's like, oh, actually it's with the Toronto Raptors back after all. And the owner of the Toronto Rafters happens to be the Board of Governors who it was written a year ago is going to be the one that decides
Starting point is 00:29:03 whether or not the clippers should be leveled for what happens with Kaua Lenn, or what happened with Kaua Lenned? It is understandably suspicious, but ultimately coincidental. It's understandably suspicious, but ultimately coincidental. I'm not there. You ain't the only one with fingers,
Starting point is 00:29:21 Wynneux. Murno has fingers, too. Wendy has a little more, you know, 45 degrees. He's a little more antler vibes. I mean, come on. I know we live in a world of conspiracy theories, but that ain't a big reach. No, no, it's not a big reach.
Starting point is 00:29:37 It is suspicious, but ultimately, I don't, I don't, I think when you get to like high levels of collusion, I just don't buy it sometimes. You know what I mean? I just don't buy it. This isn't that high. I mean, this isn't,
Starting point is 00:29:48 this isn't, this ain't that many steps, brother. The team that lost him, got it back, and the guy that is making the decision on whether or not to demolish their franchise for these sins
Starting point is 00:30:01 happens to be the guy. I mean, okay, okay. John Morant got traded. What? Yeah. Bruno, I'm a layout.
Starting point is 00:30:13 I know this is emotional for you, and I know this means a lot to you and your fans and the people of Memphis. Just speak on it. It's not emotional. You know very well that there was a long time that I was hanging on and just wished it weren't so, right? I kept saying I wish this wasn't so. And I think that there will come a day where,
Starting point is 00:30:43 everybody takes a step back and wishes it would have all been different. And maybe the answer is it could have never been different. But the crazy thing is for three straight years, it, how do I want to sum this up? It's a very sad ending to what was an intense amount of fun. Right? going up until 2023.
Starting point is 00:31:18 In 2020 we're in the spring and then the gun video comes out. Keep in mind they're like the two seed at that point. I mean, they're cracking,
Starting point is 00:31:33 he's cracking, the whole thing's going great. And then the first gun video comes out. And then he gets suspended for eight games and then he comes back but everything's weird.
Starting point is 00:31:43 And then I think Adams got hurt. They end up getting run out by the Lakers, right, in that, at the end of that series. And then they come back and then in the summer, he does it again. Adam Silver says enough with that. That's 25 games. So he suspends him for 25 games. And then at the end of that 25 games, he comes back. He's unbelievable again.
Starting point is 00:32:09 And then he hurts his shoulder. And then he's out for the season. Then he came back the next year and he hated the offense. I was with you in New York City watching him stand in the corner playing Thummoors with McCall Bridges and I'm like, what is going on? I mean, he was just down the whole year. He hated that La Roach offense. He just was not himself, not himself at all, not like the happy go lucky guy.
Starting point is 00:32:34 Then I think in the midst of all of this, Desmond Vain got an extension, Sharon Jackson got an extension. And I think he wanted an extension. And so he went, you know, him and his representatives went to them and they did not give him an extension and he was pissed about it. And all the while, you know, it was like, prove yourself because you haven't been out on the court, lead us to victories, whatever. And that egos get involved. The whole thing falls apart. But honestly, like, you know as well as I do.
Starting point is 00:33:06 Three years is a long time. And it's been, so that's going back to 23. It hadn't been fun in three years, and he has not been himself in three years, whether it is in his ability to stay on the court, and then the happy go lucky, the guy doing the gritty, the guy bouncing around, the guy like, I mean, he was the most electric thing going in the NBA. And to watch it all deteriorate the way it did, and it played out for a long, long time. And then by the time they got to basically January, I was on the air locally, like every day.
Starting point is 00:33:48 Like, bro, if he, if they're not going to, like, sit down and work this thing out, this is this, the train is coming. Because they went and played those games in Europe. So Memphis always has a Martin Luther King Day game. Always. We started it. It's the biggest thing. I mean, we take great pride in that every year.
Starting point is 00:34:09 It's national TV. and a market that very rarely gets on national people. So they went over and played in Europe. They are featuring JAA. I mean, they've got Jai-N-K-Nike stuff, J-Suff, everywhere. They are featured in Berlin, playing against the Wagner, brother. Bro, he just fails. He just doesn't play.
Starting point is 00:34:29 He doesn't play in the game when they went overseas. He just failed on it. And that's, yeah, Adam Silver. I mean, there's a video of Adam Silver going and talking to him and his people. And he played the second game. It was like a good soul. And he played great. And they beat Orlando.
Starting point is 00:34:50 And it was like, wait, is this going to be okay? And then obviously he came back, then got hurt again. And I mean, he's played, you know, 70 games in three years. You play over two, what are that, over 240 something games. So he has not played. But it was just a super sad ending because I think that it's like, The highs were so high. He's by far the biggest name and the most famous player we have ever had in what is a small market.
Starting point is 00:35:21 And- Well, also just like, you had Marcus Saul and like Zach Randolph, but Jai would light up building and electrify a crowd and put butts in the seats and energize the youth. Like, Jod was just different from like a cultural impact standpoint. 100%. I coached my kids basketball teams. Jersey Day there would be a fight over 12. That's, there wasn't, if they had like a day at school, a Jersey day, there's, I would say no lie. There was a time where probably 70% of the kids at any given school had at least a Morant jersey.
Starting point is 00:36:01 And a lot had the shoes too. Like he, you know, and it was their guy. It was the guy. And to watch it all deteriorate and then end the way it did. I mean, it truly sucked. It was the longest breakup ever. And as someone who was always a believer in him, I hope that he is able to,
Starting point is 00:36:22 I think he has gotten tragically bad advice many, many times. And I think that he will look back and regret things one day and the way it all went down. But I think that the situation he's in now is, not good at all. I think he went to a place where he is not going to be able to be himself. He is not going to be able to earn that contract probably. He is never going to be the most beloved or famous person there
Starting point is 00:36:58 because that's Damien Lillard City. Make no mistake. Who's coming back to play? And this owner who is now today rumored to now they're worried about him moving the team elsewhere. I mean, the whole thing is just like, this is not, that's,
Starting point is 00:37:17 it's not the place. And most importantly, the basketball situation. Like, when they said yesterday, there was like that tweet that came out that said, John Morant and Damian Lillard, they fancied them playing in the back court together.
Starting point is 00:37:31 I mean, no. So Drew Holiday doesn't start? And also, that is a horrendous idea. Who's been a horrendous idea? Who's guarding the other point guard? It's a horrendous idea, honestly.
Starting point is 00:37:43 And also, he's a guy that needs the ball in his hands. Look, the return. Because they both do. But, I mean, if you would have told me, and everybody that listens to this show knows, I defended him for a lot of years, because I know him and I know all the people around him, and I don't think he is nearly as bad a guy as he has been portrayed to be. I think he has made a lot of mistakes. There's no way around it.
Starting point is 00:38:06 but I also think that that particular basketball situation is like if you were going to do the comeback season back to be in yourself, back to showing everybody like they've got Drew and scoot and again this can all get sipped it out we'll see.
Starting point is 00:38:28 It's the beginning of it's beginning of free agency. Yeah, we will see. I mean, but if you would have told me I mean, you can't imagine, if you would have told me four years ago, three years ago, you're going to say, you're going to look up in three years
Starting point is 00:38:47 and John Moran's going to be traded for Jeremy Grant and Chris, what was Chris Murray. Chris Murray. Oh, my God. I mean, I kind of like the Jeremy Grant fit. You could have not me over with the family.
Starting point is 00:39:01 I kind of like the Jeremy Grant fit. I kind of like the Jeremy Grant fit. I would, look. He's certainly a three and D wing that they can just put in the light up and play. And the weird thing is, the people that work in
Starting point is 00:39:16 Detroit were texting me how much I'm going to love and how everybody in the building loves Isaiah Stewart. And the people in Portland all hit me up yesterday. And they're like, you're going to love Grant. He's the best. And I'm like, what? Really? Really?
Starting point is 00:39:31 I do. I don't know. Edie? Oh, no. If healthy. Stuart Grant Boozer Okay Coward
Starting point is 00:39:40 I mean coward I think more wing I'm thinking like four or five guys Yeah yeah but like Oh yeah Okay Well alright that's a front court That's a front court Eating gets hurt
Starting point is 00:39:49 That's fine we got beef stew there Everybody Look everybody Especially after the boozer thing Was all excited about the future But this Moran thing Has been hanging out there And so it finally felt like
Starting point is 00:40:04 yesterday the Band-Aid was ripped off. Right? Finally. Watching from afar, I'm not as involved. I don't go to the games. I'm not watching every Griss's game. What it feels like is one of those things where you're just kind of like, this has to happen, but how do we get here?
Starting point is 00:40:20 That's right. Like, this has to happen. And I recognize that it has to happen. But like, why and how? And I also think that's a pretty good transition to the Jalen Brown situation. Yeah. Well, I actually think there is something very, in common in this.
Starting point is 00:40:35 And that is egos. And I say this because I am one, now you were one that was at a place for like 20 something years. I have hopped around a lot, like during my career. And I will tell you
Starting point is 00:40:51 I ran hot. Like if I felt disrespectful, if I felt you know what I'm saying? Like, I left places. I left places because I was Slam the door behind you. So I relate to the guys that get mad about that stuff.
Starting point is 00:41:11 Like, you're trying to trade me. You're trying to, you saw Jalen Brown. These people talking like this, these people doing this, you're going to create a monster, right? Like, I relate to that, right? I relate to the guy that take great offense to the fact that I understand. And I know me and you've been texting. and you're like, why trade Jailen Brown?
Starting point is 00:41:35 Because it's going to be untenable. Because you know what Jalen Brown thinks? Jalen Brown thinks that you're bullshit for even trying to put me in a Yonnas trade. I was the Eastern Conference Finals MVP. I was the finals MVP. And you are trading me. What do you want someone that's going to-
Starting point is 00:41:59 No, no, let me speak on this. No, I'm not done, motherfucker. You want to deliver me. You want to deliver a championship? What? Oh, you think he could deliver you a championship? I already delivered you a championship. I would understand being like, F you people.
Starting point is 00:42:14 I got it. I would get it. Also, it's like this was a gap year. Like, we were supposed to like soft tank. And we started off really poorly. It looked like we were going to be out of the playing. And I turned it on. And you know what?
Starting point is 00:42:27 It was my favorite year because we had no expectations. And we ended up as the two. We ended up as a lot of people's favorite to come out of the east at the end of the regular season. And do you know why that was? Two letters. M.E. It was me. And I'm an MVP as my best year.
Starting point is 00:42:44 And I didn't just keep us afloat while Jason Tatum was coming back. We thrive with me and a bunch of white dudes all the time. And it didn't always look pretty, but it always won. And we were short, what, three games behind the Pistons is the number one seed? And now I'm on the block. I am just saying I got it. I understand people getting their feelings hurt. And I think this is why I say that they are, this is what happens.
Starting point is 00:43:16 When egos get involved in, and business can be messy, there's no question that I understood. I did not think, I thought, and I think everybody would have thought, that if the Grizzlies gave John Moran a contract, extension before he proved he could stay on the floor and be his old self, that that would be silly. That is a wise decision to not do that. But that decision also made a guy look around and go, look around. Look at this crap. I'm telling you that I don't, it's not, this has not been verbalized to me. I am just telling you how I understand how a guy could feel like, look around. Look around. Oh, there's one Jared Jackson jersey.
Starting point is 00:44:06 Oh, look, there's a Desmond Baye jersey over there. Now look at the 20,000 Miranda juror. I'm the guy. You're paying everybody else but me. I'm the guy. And I understand.
Starting point is 00:44:24 And this is how this all happens. This is how every Jimmy Butler breakup happened. Jimmy Butler goes the team does not give him the money. They pay this guy. They pay that guy. And he says, oh, you got money for him and you got money for him,
Starting point is 00:44:39 but you ain't got any money for me to hell with it. And then he napalms the whole thing. This happens all the time. The Jalen Brown one's different because he's looking at it going, why me? Why are you? And I think if you're a guy like Jalen Brown, he thinks he's, I promise you,
Starting point is 00:44:59 Jalen Brown thinks he's better than Yonnes. He should. And certainly more available. He is himself, so he's not going to be 100% objectively self-aware. But a case could definitely be made that he's more valuable than pretty much everybody outside of like Shane Yonkins. So he, I think the people that don't understand why he would be pissed off about that is what's crazy to me. I understand that part. You pissed him off, bro.
Starting point is 00:45:31 If you're the organization and you're looking at these trades, like I went through it today, like some of the stuff, the return that they could possibly get back in the main teams, like the Rockets, the Blazers, the Hawks, the Kings, and the Nuggets, and like, I guess the calves or whatever. But like, when you look at this, you're like, so we're trading out Jalen Brown, let me look, who's the best player?
Starting point is 00:45:50 I guess Moble would be the best player involved in this, but you look at the Hawks package. It's like, so we get Cominga and Nikila Alexander Walker and some stuff for Jalen Brown. Right. No. I wouldn't make any of these trades. I went through the internet looking at all the potential trades. I wouldn't make any single one of them, not a single one.
Starting point is 00:46:10 Chengoon? What? I just think it's always very hard to have somebody in very public trade discussions. And then it just be okay. It's just, it's personality management. You know, it's, personality management. And it's just like, it's not what you do,
Starting point is 00:46:33 it's how you do it. And there is, I just feel like there is a way the selfies can fix this and keep him. Because what's being offered, according to the interwebs, I think it was like CBS Sports.
Starting point is 00:46:43 I wish I had the thing where I found these potential trades. What's being offered is just, no. I'm saying no to every one of these deals about myself. Hey, and you know what you sound like?
Starting point is 00:46:55 Chris Vernon in February 2026. When you and I, recorded and I was like, I don't want this crap. I know, but you were, you were emotionally invested as well. You just didn't want to see him go. But I also didn't want those deals. I know. And I looked up at the end.
Starting point is 00:47:13 Was Jeremy Grant the one you were holding out for? Oh, we get Jeremy Grant and Chris Murray. Trust me. Trust me. It went so far that it was like, look, by the time it ended up happening, that just couldn't bring him back. I know. By the time it ended up happening, you're like, at least I didn't give up a pick.
Starting point is 00:47:28 Yeah. I know. It's like, didn't attach a pick. Like, what does happen here? I just, listen, we'll pay attention to this Brown thing. And I think that it's always important to recognize that I don't know Jalen Brown. I haven't spoken to Jalen Brown. I don't know what his relationship is like with Tatum and with Missoula and with the owners and the front office and Stevens.
Starting point is 00:47:46 And I don't know what he's expressed off Mike. You know what I mean? I think that those are the things that really guide these decisions, information that we don't have. So I'm certainly saying, why would you trade him? but he might have said something in a private conversation that said, like, listen, this is untenable. And that's to the point where you're like,
Starting point is 00:48:06 I guess we have to do something. Because you hang up the phone, you're like, well, that guy's not going to be in the team in October. You know? Because look, when you are like smaller names, you got to deal with stuff like that. But he's always going to, he's always going to hold that over their head.
Starting point is 00:48:25 It's like if you went home tonight and you found out that Joe has been calling some dude all the time. I mean, what are we doing, Bruno? No, I'm serious, though. What are we doing? Hey, and you find his address, and I ring his doorbell, and I beat his ass. Right. Right.
Starting point is 00:48:49 And you wouldn't just let it go. No, no, I'm not letting go guy. When it comes to that. I understand. I'm not let it go. And I'm telling you, Jalen Brown, is not going to just let it go that there was a phone call
Starting point is 00:49:03 where they said, not Hugo Gonzalez. I love the idea that Brown is so disrespected, but Shireman and Gonzalez are walking to the locker and be like, I'm the one that they wouldn't give up for Yonis Dutte d'Kinpo. Shireman is like, I'm the reason
Starting point is 00:49:18 that Yonis is not on this team because I am so valuable. I mean, and if I were Jalen Brown, I'd be a prick about it too. I'd show up the training camp and be like, oh, are you sure they're not starting? Cover me. Cover me.
Starting point is 00:49:30 In practice. We're scrimaging. Cover me. I'll go with the backups. Hey, I'll run with the backups. Because that's who y'all don't want. That's who you got to make sure stays. We got to make sure those guys are good.
Starting point is 00:49:42 Again, like I always want to recognize there's information and conversations happening that we are not privy to. But on its surface, my biggest instinct about this is, are we sure we have to trade Jalen Brown for 50 cents on the dollar? Is that really where we are? Is that really where we are? I don't think it'll be 50 cents on the dollar. I think that's... Look at these trades. You want Sagan.
Starting point is 00:50:07 I know. Shagoon's like probably the best player you can get back. Or Mowgli, I guess. You can probably get some bonus. Sent him out to Sacramento. Yeah. I mean, these are fine players. No disrespect to these two gentlemen.
Starting point is 00:50:20 They're just not as productive as Jailen Brown. Hey, you want your own team? Welcome to Sacramento. You know what I mean? One of the big things about free agency, so we didn't have that many of these, but you know where feelings really get hurt, restricted free agency. It seems like Jalen Duren's already gotten pissed off because unfortunately the Pistons reviewed the playoff tapes and decided they did not want to give him the full boat. And so now he's got to run around and try to get the biggest offer sheet he can get from somebody and then have them. match it, which they have said they're going to match
Starting point is 00:51:01 it. I mean, that's been all the report of today. They said they're like whatever it is, we're matching it. Okay, but I got to tell you something. I feel like I am in bizarro world here. Thank you. I'm on the same page. I know what you're going to say? I'm on the same page. Go. Bro, how are we talking
Starting point is 00:51:16 about Jalem Durant's got to run around town finding a finding a deal somewhere when he is young and he was just on a 60 win one seed and was an all-star and I got it. Had a rough playoffs for sure, right?
Starting point is 00:51:35 But he was also part of big, big winning as their second best player all throughout the year for a team that won 60 games. And there are reports that Walker Kessler's getting in the high, like, what, what planet am I on? What planet am I on that people are offering Walker Kessler 30-something? the million dollars a year and Jalen Duren's like trying to go fight to get somebody
Starting point is 00:52:04 to sign him to an offer sheet. What? Well, it's not what I thought you were going to say. Really? What happened to Verno that was like you only have so many maxes that you can put on your team? Are you sure that Jalen Verdearn is worth one? Because that's kind of where I'm at too. I'm like, are we sure? Like, we have to match whatever
Starting point is 00:52:22 any other team puts up for Jalen Dern? I don't mind them being responsible about this and saying, hey, man, like life is leverage, go out. And because I don't think it's probably going to be. I don't think the offer sheet is going to be like the full boat. But they made their offer. He didn't like it. And in fairness, part of this, I would think, is the Kessler thing.
Starting point is 00:52:46 I would be enraged, enraged if Walker Kessler was getting a bigger. I think it's been established in Jalen Dern as a more valuable basketball player than Walker Castle. I think that's been established. I think that's been established. Walker Castle should ever won. By the games of basketball that they played, not just winning,
Starting point is 00:53:05 because they're good players and bad teams and don't get opportunities to play, which happens all the time, especially in Utah. But like, I mean, I think 100 of 100 people would choose Jaylen Duren over Walker Kessler. Well, I'm also a bit like,
Starting point is 00:53:19 Miff. And this even happened with Chet. It happened with Duren. It's happened with other guys, too, where it's like, you understand we're talking about their failings in the playoffs because their team is good enough to be in the playoffs because they are good.
Starting point is 00:53:37 Well, also, you just drafted guys that are his age. You know what I mean? Like a couple of guys in the first round went that are his age. Like, there is room to grow here if you're Jalen Dern. All right. Put me on record. Put me on record. Whoever gives Walker Kessler over $30 million is crazier than hell.
Starting point is 00:53:57 30 million for three years, I'll take it. 30 million for three years, I'll take it. You mean annually, obviously. Yeah. That is insane. Fine player. Fine. But LeBron's going to be playing for 15 and Walker Castle is going to be playing for 30.
Starting point is 00:54:15 Like, what? No way. And if I were, that is the one time where I was like, you know what, I don't think that necessarily they should be, you know, unloading. every bit of money. Like, if the price of doing business, there might be a limit to where you just say,
Starting point is 00:54:33 you know what? It's better for us to not sign that contract going forward. I am typically one that says, go ahead and match it. Everything is tradable. Yeah, and you can't. You drafted. And you can't lose the asset.
Starting point is 00:54:48 You're invested. You can't lose the asset. Yeah, I get it. But there is a thing, like, I've only been like a few like charity auctions or auctions. sometimes it gets to a point which is like, you're bidding against somebody
Starting point is 00:54:59 like, I'm out. Go ahead. You get the hotel in Barbados because I'm out. The other thing is what then becomes of the center position in Utah because everybody has projected this out.
Starting point is 00:55:14 I'm saying everybody that's projected, I'm telling you Jaron ain't a center, brother. No, I know that, but it's more like they're not competing for a championship next year. They're a great story. They're going to compete. They're going to be good.
Starting point is 00:55:23 They can make the playoffs. But you're not a champion. team so you run it you run it through and you see where you stand. It's just kind of odd that we've gotten to this moment where free agency starts and there's all these stories about how there's people evidently, at least a few lining up to give Walker Kessler this kind of money and these are the kind of offers he's going to get. And then the other stories are like the pistons are telling Jalen Dern like bring back an offer sheet.
Starting point is 00:55:58 But they already said they preemptively said they're going to match it, which is weird. Because here for another team, you're like, well, can't we just screw the pissens here? You know what I mean? Yes. It's exactly what you try to do. But that's a gamble in itself. It also feels like the center market is skewed because the Lakers have such an obvious hole there.
Starting point is 00:56:18 You know, it's like all these, all of these players are taking meetings or being rumored with the Lakers. Mitch, Kessler, Durant, If you're over 610 and you might be available, the Lakers are interested. Walker Kessler and D'Andre Aiton as your center rotation. Okay. All right. All right.
Starting point is 00:56:40 I'm a rapid fire all these that have happened. You stop me if you care about one of them. Zach Collins to the Chicago Bulls. What in the world? This happened since we've been on the air. That was big breaking news. Boy, you ready for the Zach Collins and Nick Claxton, Frontline in Chicago.
Starting point is 00:57:00 New era. New era in Chicago. But you told me to stop you when I care, so I haven't stopped you yet. This is not reminiscent of Samson and Elijah on to you, Collins and Claxton. I like Claxton. The new Twin Towers.
Starting point is 00:57:14 Luke Canard side with the Phoenix Suns. I love Luke Canohart. I like that. If they lost Grayson, they're like, we need the way shooter. From Duke, no less. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We need to replace that.
Starting point is 00:57:26 Yeah. Well, they do need somebody that could shoot because they just they just made that deal for Miles Bridges and it's like, geez, man, like, Booker didn't shoot threes that,
Starting point is 00:57:36 that well last year. And you look around and be like, all we's facing the floor here. Like, Royce O'Neill just stood in the corner and all he took was threes. There was a game against the Rockets where Lou Canard was the best player
Starting point is 00:57:47 in the floor. They included like KD and LeBron James. Yeah. Keon Ellis to the Brooklyn Nets. I like Keon Ellis. It's just the Nets part that literally lose my interest. Okay, Kobe Sanders.
Starting point is 00:58:01 I thought the Keon Ellis thing was going to be better in Cleveland. Okay, Kobe Sanders, resided to the clippers. Brandon Carlson, one year, $2.5 million to the Portland Trailblazers to go along with Rob Williams and Klingin. Tim Hardaway? That's your guy. I like Tim Hardaway, Jr., yeah. I did TV with his dad for months on end, so I rock with Tim Hardaway, Jr.
Starting point is 00:58:26 one of those guys where it's like you put him in the first quarter at the end of the first quarter you put him in and he either makes his first one and he's going to hit seven or he misses his first one he's going to miss seven times he's going to miss seven times and he's just like one of those real hot or not guys and i love him for that i mean for one year six point five million dollars as a guy take it you feel like he will be able to do that until he's going to score 20 like seven times during the regular season guaranteed yes and hit a game winner oh yeah and it really is if you're a coach if you're a coach it's like He either has it or he doesn't. And if he doesn't pull him, if he does, put him in. Bones Highland, back to Minnesota, D'Andre Jordan, back to the Pelicans, Usman Jane. What's DeAndre's number? Unknown. Okay. Yeah, he's just there to make sure Derek Queen.
Starting point is 00:59:15 They should just put Unk instead of his Jordan on the back of his number. Yes. He's jersey. Usman Jang, three years 175 to the bucks. Sure. Okay. A guy that I did love in his short time in Memphis But I, when it came across the timeline
Starting point is 00:59:34 When it came- No, when it came across the timeline, I was like, what? Bro, Joclandell got one year $14 million. I love Jocke Lendell. That's what LeBron James is going to get paid next year. It is really. That's what LeBron's going to get paid next year. And Jacques Lendell is going to get paid the same.
Starting point is 00:59:52 Great age of work. This is broken. This is broken. broken. I do like Jacolitan Delt. How about Time Lord getting three years, $44 billion? If you squint, time, it looks like a really good player. Like, it went healthy. Like, he, he contributes.
Starting point is 01:00:08 Like, 59 games last year. To stay with the, stay with the Blazers, right? Yes, stay with the Blazers. Is that 3.44? That's going to get you to what, like 15 a year, a little less than that. You have 14.3 a year? Sure. That's a good deal.
Starting point is 01:00:22 Sure. That's a good deal. Porzingis going back to the Warriors. I like that. I like Porzingis going to the Warriors. You do too. They're obviously going to add some sort of piece, LeBron James. And, you know, if Porzingis is healthy, like, there's something there.
Starting point is 01:00:35 Kevin Herder back with the Pistons, three years, $27 million. They gave up assets to bring them in. So I think they have to kind of sign them. Three years, 20, seven, so it's seven point three. Yeah, I mean, he was supposed, I know they say he was injured during the playoffs or whatever. But, like, bro, you can't get on the floor. You know what I mean? Yeah, it's like, we're.
Starting point is 01:00:56 needed you. They needed shooting and he was the guy brought in to be the shooter and he didn't shoot. No, like I need you to space the floor and knock down shots. Badly. Badly. All right. Julian Champany back with the Spurs on a great deal. Three years, $45 million for Champetti
Starting point is 01:01:13 is good. In two years, I can see that being one of the best contracts in the NBA. If he like really develops I mean, he started on the finals team. If they win a championship and he's like knocking down threes in huge spots, making $15 million a year,
Starting point is 01:01:30 that could be a great deal. That's potentially to be one of the best deals. Were you glad sham it wasn't a casualty? I've had a tumultuous relationship with Shannon. I know you have. I've had a very tumultuous relationship with Landers' Schaeman. Not, I mean, this predates the next 10 year. I'm very happy that he got paid based on his performance
Starting point is 01:01:52 in a single series in the playoffs. the Eastern Conference finals. Bro, he was like 13 for 15 from three. He was 13 from 14, dude. He missed one shot in the entire series. I think that's worth. I think that's worth six million a year. And there was a couple times, like,
Starting point is 01:02:08 he was getting closed out, and he would upbake and drive and look like a capable offensive player. He also was good defensively. Yeah. He's just like a, he's like Bridgeto. He's like Timu Bridges. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:02:20 It's like, sure. All right. Long guy plays defense. When Brintzes out, you put them in. We won't go through all of these, but were you surprised? I'm already bored with the ones we went through. All right. For as much conversation as this next player that I'm about to mention,
Starting point is 01:02:37 and as much air time as he took on every NBA podcast, imagine that we got to the point where it wasn't even a big story or deal when the Atlanta Hawks said, no, we'll just decline the comminga option. That's wild. he's like putting this thing the hawks package for Jalen Brown is like based around
Starting point is 01:03:00 Kaminga I'm like what are you talking about I'm hanging like what are we talking about Kaminga and Jalen Brown in a deal together what the team declined the option and just
Starting point is 01:03:14 I mean there we went from hold on was this just a Steve Kerr problem to then by the time it was done, it was like, oh, wait. Remember his first couple games in Atlanta? Steve Kerr's probably like smiling like a Cheshire cat watching the way this is playing out,
Starting point is 01:03:36 because now they don't want him either. Like, well, it's just, what a wild deal. I would not have expected that when they made that trade. I would have thought, like, yeah, it'll be there for another year. They just declined the option. They're like, no, we're good. he had some very productive games and he had some very forgettable games
Starting point is 01:03:56 and I always say that they know more about Kaminga than we do and they decided to decline the option. All right. The rest of these are boring. I'm not even going to go through them. Most of those are boring to begin. We talk about Joc Landell for 30 seconds, please.
Starting point is 01:04:10 Well, those are just the ones that happen like today. You know what I mean? The other ones happen. Very quick. Where do you think LeBron plays next year? Golden State. Where do you think Jalen Brown plays next year?
Starting point is 01:04:22 Cleveland. Huh. I'm only saying that because why did Windhorse bring that up? That was so weird. If you get Mowgli back, if you get Mowgli back, that's probably the, my thing if I'm the Celtics, I'm like, if I'm trading a guy.
Starting point is 01:04:38 It's a best player you can get back. Yeah, it's a give me back because we're not going to rebuild. I don't want a bunch of picks and like a young prospect. That's right. That makes the most sense. First of all, I wouldn't trade him. But like, getting Mowbly back, you can convince yourself that you are diversifying your stars
Starting point is 01:04:55 because Brown and Tatum are a little bit redundant. I can convince myself that it's going to make us a better basketball team from myself. I just don't. The reason I am saying that is because I was watching that show and I was like, what? And Wendy, you know, he's tied into the Cavs. Yes. And he walked right up to the Board and he's like, how about we switch this to Jaila Brown to the Cavs? And I was like, what? Jaylor Brown to the Caves. All right. Chris Vernon is reporting Jaylon Brown to the Cavins. That's a report. That isn't that. That isn't that. He's confirmed it with three independent sources.
Starting point is 01:05:31 It's gone through the mismatched newsroom, which is basically Jesse Lopez. And he's reported it. I am, the only thing I am confirming is that when you see this Walker Kessler news come down, it is going to be bozoerific. That's what I am confirming. There's always somebody that it's like, and there's going to be.
Starting point is 01:05:57 be nerds out there that like it. And I'm telling you, they're nerds. That is stupid as hell. You know what I got? And I'm not against Walker Kessler as a human being. This, I don't even want to discuss this, but this Bobby Marks thing just blew way out of proportion. Just way out of proportion. Oh, the analytics? Yeah. Someone told them, seven best player in the team. It's like, that's just ridiculous. That's just ridiculous. I like old school jocks versus nerds. I love that. I do too, but it's like, it's just so objectively not true that Jalen Brown would be the seventh best player on any team in the NBA. It's just like, I don't need to even like parse this out or open up a roster.
Starting point is 01:06:38 Like there's no team that he would be the seven best player on this is none. That's when you know, that's when you know he's running hot. He'd have just ignored that years ago. Yeah, yeah. He wasn't, he had time. He had time for that. He does. He's got time for everybody.
Starting point is 01:06:54 Who's Jalen Brown's best friend? Oh. Jailen Boundser needs a best friend to pull aside. Be like, hey, man, like, you know what? Let the internet, just like the discourse just like, they'll back you up. Like the, the environment will have your back. You don't need to have your own back here. Buddy, I promise you this.
Starting point is 01:07:11 You are never going to see me say one false word about that cat after seeing his dad. Bobby Marks? I've never seen Bobby Marks. Shailan Brown. Oh. Have you not seen this? No, I've seen him. Have you ever heard of Jalen Brown's dad?
Starting point is 01:07:31 No. Jalen Brown's dad who I had... Oh, whoa, okay. Lots of results are coming up here. I had no previous awareness. Marcel is Marci Brown? How do we say this? I had no previous awareness.
Starting point is 01:07:45 He was, he had 25 knockouts. Yeah, he's Debo. He's Debo. If you're listening to the podcast, it's basically a human Debo who's a boxer. He went on talking to. I might have a rap sheet. Hey, he went on talking crazy about Stephen A. Smith and Kendrick Perkins. And then Kendrick Perkins was like firing back.
Starting point is 01:08:05 And then I think everybody was like, uh, Kendrick, you might need to. Oh, wow. You might need to look this guy up. Yeah. I don't think that they were close. But I, maybe they're rekindling the relate. I'm just telling you this. I'm not familiar.
Starting point is 01:08:18 I can't report on his relationship with his dad, but I can't report on the fact that he's big and he looks bad. bro he was the WBO world champion i'd never heard of this until this past week looks mean as hell when he's talking about these guys too i'm like yeah that is not the guy when when perk is like i'm easy to find i'm like bro this is the trust me you might find this is the last guy you should make yourself a little bit more difficult to find out and you're going to find out a guy got stabbed in a parking lot over a parking spot. Allegedly. This is not, don't trifle with this guy, bro.
Starting point is 01:08:57 This is the wrong. This is the wrong one. This is the wrong one where you just got to be like, you know what? I'm done, woofing. Because this guy. It's like, the cop with Justin Porter is like, let's fight. It's like, no, thank you. Yeah, that's a mistake. I'm afraid to tase you. Yeah, big mistake. All right, we've had a ton of names already moving around the NBA. inevitably we'll have a lot more. We will reconvene next week. You know, this week, we got both California and Utah summer leagues going on this weekend before Vegas next week.
Starting point is 01:09:32 Oh, I did not know that. Oh, yeah. By this weekend, Cam Boozer versus Darren Peterson. This week. Oh, wow. We got a bunch going on this weekend from July 4th weekend. And then we will reconvene next week before Summer League in Vegas. Thanks to Dave Jacoby, thanks to Steph, Jeff, and Jesse as always, and we will reconvene next week.
