Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the Miss Ratch. I'm Chris Varnan, and joining me to see us every week from The Ringer.com is Dave Jacoby. Jacoby. You know what, Burno? We're not talking about the Knicks championship this episode. NBA draft was last night. And what a night it was for the Memphis Crisleys. So I was down at the arena.
Starting point is 00:00:39 They had a draft party, which tons of people showed up for. and one of the oddest experiences I have ever had was watching a crowd. So the way it works is the draft is on and everybody is watching it on the Jumbotron, right? And the audio is going through. And when they announce with the second pick of the NBA draft, the Utah Jazz Select,
Starting point is 00:01:11 Darren Peterson, He was drawn. Pandemonium. Pandemonium. I wouldn't make me feel great if I was a jazz fan. It was unbelievable. Like people really had their heart set on Cameron Boozer by the time that this thing came to fruition. And so, yeah, people in Memphis are super excited.
Starting point is 00:01:36 This episode of The Mismatch is presented to you by WeatherTech. Everyone knows Winter is the MVP in making a lot. mess. You don't need weather tech floor liners in the summer unless you hit the beach or go camping, then you'd want a cargo liner. Or a road trip goes sideways. Catchup goes rogue. Ice cream drips. Yeah, you'd be pretty happy about those weather tech seat protectors. So just to be clear, as the mud you're inevitably going to step in the summer, you don't need weather tech unless you plan on doing summer. So visit. WeatherTech.com today.
Starting point is 00:02:17 We knew that with these top four guys, one of the things that we talked about last week is you could sit down with somebody incredibly persuasive and they could persuade you to believe that any of these guys should be the guy, right? Whether it is, whether it is DeBonsta, and he's always supposed to have been this guy and he's got the superstar ceiling.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Same thing with Darren Peterson. You overlook whatever happened with this weird stuff at Kansas, and this guy's got the highest ceiling. Cameron Boozer, this guy has won at every single level. There is something to that, and he just was college
Starting point is 00:02:56 player of the year while being the youngest guy. And then obviously Caleb Wilson, who has these things that just, you can't develop what Caleb Wilson has, right? Yeah, he has this crazy-ass athleticism slash motor.
Starting point is 00:03:12 And so you have this, situation where one through four, and this is what we knew when the lottery balls were drawn, one through four, we're going to be absolutely, I think all four of those fan bases are absolutely thrilled with what took place last night. And I can only speak for Memphis, especially when you are moving into a new era. When you have cornerstones like Cedric Howard, who everybody loved last year and camera boozer it's like all right now we got two guys now build out around that obviously jack edie uh performed extremely well and don't forget about jane wells too who i think is and here's a question i have for you as i sort of digest all of this and we'll move off the grislies eventually i'm sure
Starting point is 00:03:57 uh is job around staying on the team nobody thinks so okay but it is but it feels like you were inundated with all manner of the the The Timberwolves are out and the Pelicans are out and the Kings are out. Well, who's in? Who's still in, right? And for what? You know what I mean? And why trade someone like Morant for 40 cents on the dollar?
Starting point is 00:04:24 This all makes for a very odd situation, right? Because you are in, it's like you're getting a divorce. It's long and drawn out. You're still living in the same house. But the new partner of one of them has. moved in. Yeah, a little bit. Who also happened to wear number 12
Starting point is 00:04:46 his whole career? You know what I mean? It is a little awkward. There's no way around it. And certainly, look, we thought that was going to be done in February. Now we're already to June and it's still not done.
Starting point is 00:05:00 So who knows? Who knows? Who knows? Right? Who knows what the market is? And look, you know very well. I told you on the mismatch way back then. I wish I could sit down with the kid and just tell him like whatever you want,
Starting point is 00:05:15 this ain't the path to get it. The other side of it is playing really well for the Memphis Grizzlies. Right. And this might be, he might start the season on the Grizzlies. Who knows at this point, honestly, because I think everybody was sitting there over the course of the past 48 hours waiting it out, especially after the Yonis thing came down, right? It was like, oh, okay, the Yonest thing is finally done.
Starting point is 00:05:38 So now any team that fancy themselves as a Yonis team, i.e. Miami, where he did buy a house, you know, once they got the Yonnas thing done, it's like, all right, that's over. So it's like, what's left? And like really the Julius Randall thing, because I always thought the Nets might be a place where John Moran would end up. It's like, well, yeah, right. You look around and you go, who wants them? Yeah. And then there's a bunch of point cards in the drafts.
Starting point is 00:06:06 then there's a, that means there's like three or four teams that just used a lottery pick on a point card. Including Sacramento with Darius A Cup. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Anyways, the way the draft played out last night, obviously, last thing on the camera boozer thing is, you know, we just talked about Jalen Brunson an inordinate amount over the course of the last three months for very good reason. No, we can still do it some more. You want to talk about Becky Hammond? You want to do that?
Starting point is 00:06:36 No, but no. But one of the things... I didn't see Jailin Bruns on the rundout today. One of the things was that they always talked about he's a winner. He wins. That's what he does. He wins. You could talk about this.
Starting point is 00:06:49 You could talk about that. Why does this team always win? And I think that is the thing that people are most excited about with Boozer. He is the winningest preps player ever. So you get to this point. He won four state championships. He won another. championship. Every time he played EYBL, his team won it.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Every time he put on a USA jersey, he won a gold medal. Like, it's like on and on and on. It's like, all he's ever done is won. So why? If his brother didn't turn the ball over, maybe he would have won the tournament. And I think you also have to look at that with, you know, and obviously they got people by St. John's in the end on that crazy, crazy ending to a season. you looked up and down
Starting point is 00:07:39 and like last year Cooper flag went one right and then Conchinipal went four and then Common Malawak went what like 10 something like that I mean it was a littered there was no other Duke guys in this first round
Starting point is 00:07:53 nobody went so how were they also how did they have a chance at winning the national championship you have to look at that and you go well geez I mean, how outsized is he? Because it wasn't like he was playing
Starting point is 00:08:09 with a bunch of other high-level NBA prospects, at least according to the NBA. Right? He was the one. You know, a lot of times you'll see these teams, the great teams, and they're littered with draft picks. Even Brunton's, for that matter, right? It was Josh Hart, it was Macaulde Bridges, it was Dante DiVincenzo.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Like, there was a bunch of guys off of those Villanobos. I love your enthusiasm, Verno. He's the engine. I love what's happening here. I can tell how much you love him. Like, not only is the new girlfriend lit. Like, your new girlfriend's walking around the house in lingerie. She is so hot.
Starting point is 00:08:44 There's noises coming from your bedroom. It's, I love your enthusiasm for this big. Here's the thing. There's nothing better than drafting a guy that you have literally zero concerns about. Yes. None. One of the concerns is like athleticism. It's like, I don't know, I watched it play basketball.
Starting point is 00:09:02 It looks pretty athletic. It's like, you know what I mean? I didn't look, because I did a little research for this, you know, because I've been locked into the Knicks. So I did a ton of YouTube dives. And I was like, all right, so let me see how like legitimate these like, he's not that athletic concerns are. Like, zero, zero. Zero. Yeah, maybe he can't jump out the gym and windmill dunk on people.
Starting point is 00:09:22 But like, he is just such a elite decision maker that it makes up all anticipation and processing makes up for athleticism. Here's the other thing, Jacoby. think about who we talk about as the best players in the NBA. And obviously Brunton has moved into that class. Brunton, SGA, Yokic, Luca. Like, it's not exactly the bad thing of above the rim. I would say Janus is sort of the exception there. He is sort of his physical gifts are sort of the key to his game.
Starting point is 00:09:55 But yeah, I mean, ask Yokic about athleticism. Yeah. And he's wildly considered to be the best player in basketball. Right. All four are super excited. I think the draft is really going to start at five. And I know that once news came out that Keaton Wogler had canceled, you know, workouts with some teams below,
Starting point is 00:10:15 then everybody kind of got the sniff that, okay, that's probably going to be the clipper. So he did end up going there. In fact, I guess six was the first time like, oh, because McKell Brown Jr. from Louisville went to Brooklyn. And my God, he looked depressed. he looked young I mean God he was so dumb
Starting point is 00:10:35 I was like how old is this I was watching with my wife and my sister-in-law who had know nothing about sports or basketball and they're just like how old is that child and one thing that I found odd did you see the Nets draft room celebration I did not
Starting point is 00:10:50 they stood up like they won the championship it looked like one of those teams that gets selected to the NCAA tournament that's like on the bubble like they're standing up they're cheering They're hugging, they're high-fiving. And I was like, guys, like, what do you know that I don't know?
Starting point is 00:11:08 Did they think that Brown was going to get picked before five? I don't know. I think it's, you know, you just have to be, you have to be excited. And the other thing is, I think. Don't forget, it's the same point of office that drafted five first rounders last year. Well, and here's the other thing. And this, this goes without saying, with A-Cuff getting selected seven, this has a, very real possibility of us looking back and going, how?
Starting point is 00:11:38 How did he go seven? What did he need to do? When you lead a loaded conference like the SEC, when you lead that conference in scoring and assist and become the first guy to do it since Pete Marevich and your coach who has coached literally half of the awesome guards over the last 20 years saying you're the guy.
Starting point is 00:12:08 And it's like he's coached Maxie and he's coached Gildes Alexander and he's coached Derek Rose and he's coached Devon Booker and he's coached and he's out there saying like, yo, do not pass on this guy. And then six teams did. So he's a,
Starting point is 00:12:24 the A cup is by far the most interesting of the, you know, and the king's got him at seven. but that is super fascinating to me because I think there's a very real possibility that A-Cuff comes in and especially on that team, which is losing on a regular basis, is putting up some pretty freaky numbers
Starting point is 00:12:42 and everybody's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. But I mean, look, we talked about this a couple of years ago. It's like, bro, just take the Califery Guard. You know, you've got a, you know, if I told you I've got a 80% hit rate, what kind of money do you want to put down on this blackjack table? You'd be like, all of it. I get all the money.
Starting point is 00:13:04 What marker can I get? Right? Yeah. And I mean, the hit rate is crazy. And a lot of times you end up with an all NBA player. And he's there telling you, like, that's the one thing that even if you want to say that he's a big talker, like Cal Perry has been an amazing evaluator of guard talent over the course of his career. And if you think about guys like a manual quickly even.
Starting point is 00:13:28 You know what I mean? Like, yeah. And again, who knows sometimes? And I know that there's going to be people that bring up like, you know, Rob Dillingham. That didn't work, right? No. But again, so there's always going to be exceptions to the rule, right?
Starting point is 00:13:42 This is going to, but over the course of time, though, and when they put up those stats at the end of the year when I was watching the SEC tournament, and they're like, here's A-Cuck's numbers. And here's all these frigging NBA, all-eat, NBA caliber players, and here's what they did when they played at Kentucky under Caliperi or Memphis under Calgary. And you're like, why are his numbers better than literally ever? It's crazy. And the eye test is like he jumps off the screen when you watch, especially like those tournament games.
Starting point is 00:14:16 It's just like, come on. Yes. I love Wogler and Brown too, though. You know what I mean? I don't know. I know. I think all these guys. Like I'm not looking at A Cup being like, I can't believe he fell to seven.
Starting point is 00:14:26 And I'm like, yeah, sure, I can totally, like, Brown is pulling up from so deep. It's crazy, it's crazy the way this stuff all plays out, too, because I, there's part of me that watched last year's draft class. And even if you go through last year's draft class and you're like, all right, find the guy who's not going to be good. And it's like, well, damn, man, they all pretty, they all pretty much for good. And it's like the same thing. I was like, Malawak that you know, who you mentioned earlier. see him. He just didn't really like,
Starting point is 00:14:56 no, I was kind of like, oh, I thought he was going to, they could use a big, you know. Right. But,
Starting point is 00:15:00 and he had the injuries, and he played in the G league a lot and whatever else. But also, the crazy thing is, there's part of me that thought, especially after seeing last years, that now, there's a couple things that are taking place.
Starting point is 00:15:19 Number one, they're playing college basketball. Like, there's, there's less. of the We don't know what you look.
Starting point is 00:15:28 There's one. The Knicks. The Knicks guy. We'll get there. Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. College. Oh, right. So they're going.
Starting point is 00:15:38 And even like, you know, it used to be, and there would be some of these guys, whether it was Christian Anderson, or it was Heinsteinbach, or Hayn Steinbach, or it was. Technically, your guy,
Starting point is 00:15:50 Kareem Lopez. We're going to get to it. Okay. Because we've got a big problem here with the mismatch. What? I mean, an enormous problem. I hope so. I'm going to get to it.
Starting point is 00:16:03 I love tension in my relationships. Well, there's about to be some very serious tension regarding that pit coming up. But it's hard to figure out. So there's two things going on. Number one, they're playing in college basketball. College basketball is loaded now with, because these international players, Like there's a kid right now who's actually going to be going to Arkansas next year. After we're done with the podcast, I would encourage anybody to go just type in on YouTube the Finnish freak.
Starting point is 00:16:36 And look at this son of a bitch that's going to Arkansas next year. And it is unbelievable. Like you can't. And you're like, that is the kind of guy that would just go to the draft lottery, right? and then we'd be talking about the finish freak. Go look at him. Watch some of these dunks that this kid has. Oh, the finisher.
Starting point is 00:17:00 Well, because now, so here's the deal. It's his finished freak, and the next one is Finish Freak basketball. I don't want to find out what the Finnish freak non-basketball is. It's probably fair. I mean, the highlights are ridiculous. This guy is, like, jumping from, like, inside the free throw line. It's like, what is this?
Starting point is 00:17:21 They're going to love his in Arkansas. Anyways. Oh. Here's what I'm saying. You can get... Live Jacoby reactions. You can get four and five million dollars playing in college now.
Starting point is 00:17:34 Sometimes maybe even more. And so if you're not a top 20 pick for sure, a lot of these guys are just playing in college. So here's what's happening. So there's two things that are taking place that I do think make it much, much harder to figure out the guys that are just, not going to be good. And I think that we are going to have less busts
Starting point is 00:17:56 than we have had in the past. Number one, you have already put an inordinate amount of money in their pockets. So the guys that are going to not, like that was the mountaintop. I have reached it. Now my, like that was what I was working towards. I accomplished my goal. Those guys now you're going to get to find out early. because they're all getting paid while they're in college and they're getting and they're rich
Starting point is 00:18:25 while they're in college. So you're going to find out who really wants it and who really doesn't. And then the other thing is because of the amount of money that is circulating through college basketball, guys are just going to go to college. And then we get to see. Like, so you're either going to get exposed or you are going to prove to be awesome on that level. And that's why I say, like all of these guys, again, I'm not telling you that they're all going to work. out, but I am going to tell you that unlike years in the past, all of them proved to be awesome. Like those ones that we have just talked about, like they showed, they played on that level. You put a bunch of money in their pockets and they still performed at an extremely high level.
Starting point is 00:19:10 And so there's part of me that does wonder, are we just going to, like, is the evaluation process getting easier? Well, don't forget that you can declare and undeclare too. So it just feels like the crop of players to choose from is just going to be elevated because all of the exposure, the fact that they've been evaluated and paid, and you can declare, work out for teams, figure you're going to go a little bit later, and then just go back into college, play another year,
Starting point is 00:19:35 and put more video on tape. Right. And there isn't going to be like the swing for the frances, you know, let's just say, like, Frankie smokes, who the Knicks once took, right? Frankie smokes out. I'm just saying, he comes to college basketball now and then we're going to find out if he's good or not.
Starting point is 00:19:54 You know what I'm saying? Like that's the aides that we're in. These guys from overseas are going and they're playing in NCAA basketball because that's where they can make the most money. You know? And there's also a network of coaches and scouts and, you know,
Starting point is 00:20:10 when you're sort of domestically in the system, there's been more information given to the people that make decisions. No question. And there was only, One of those guys, really, that is a like, we're not real sure. He was projected sometimes in the lottery early in this process or maybe even a few weeks ago in this process. And then I had the craziest experience last night.
Starting point is 00:20:41 The pump faking that went on. We taught, there were three different Grizzly's picks for at least. least 20 seconds. First it was Bennett Sturt. And then it's like, nope, they've traded Bennett Sturt. And then it was Abuca from, Stanford. It's like, nope, they've traded Abuca. And they traded down and they got five
Starting point is 00:21:03 second round picks before they went with 21. And this all leads into the one guy that I had not evaluated the most because he was playing for the New Zealand breakers. And he wasn't. He's the only one. Two years with the breakers. It wasn't like a one year thing. And also, like, not a college basketball player. Like, everybody else is a college basketball player. So, like, here is almost all of them.
Starting point is 00:21:27 You watch them in college and you're like, I know that translates. I know that translates. I know that translates. And this is one of those. This is like the old school NBA pick. This guy was playing for the New Zealand breakers. And then you go watch his breakers highlights.
Starting point is 00:21:41 And, of course, it's a mixtape of them. They look good. Yeah, right. I like that. This spring, Denham gets a. softer, lighter update. Introducing Old Navy's drapey denim wide leg, a new fit that moves with you. It's everything you want denim to feel like for summer.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Easy, breathable, and effortlessly cool. With a fit that creates natural movement and a wide leg that feels modern, not overwhelming. Plus, that signature, wait, for this price, moment. Old Navy's drapey denim wide leg. Shut. I watched the whole thing. But this is going to cause incredible tension. in the mismatch family. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:24 Bro, how did my team draft a Mexican guy named Lopez, and I don't get one text for a long-time mismatch producer Jesse Lopez? Oh, wow. Mexican Jesse Lopez. And Mexican Kareem Lopez drafted to Verno's team. The second Mexican guy ever, ever. to Eduardo Nahara, the first ever Mexican guy
Starting point is 00:22:54 drafted in the first round of the NBA draft. I don't get as much as a text. Not a single text. The guy has the Mexican flag inside. At the table. In-sci. No, it is inside his suit coat.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Yeah. It's a moment. Oh, my God. It's a, I mean, immediately I'm like, I can't wait. I can't wait for Jesse to see this. Also,
Starting point is 00:23:23 it's worth, it's worth noting that Jesse's on the West Coast. It's not like it's like too late. It's like 7.30. I thought for sure I'm going to get it. I better have my Lopez jersey by Monday. And I'd be like, say less.
Starting point is 00:23:36 Wow. A guy bearing his name from Mexico. Making history. Unbelievable. Not one. Not one. Not one. Not one.
Starting point is 00:23:49 who is it who is jessie jessie do you want to defend yourself who's a more important lopez to chris vernon turn your mic on the lopez is in your life turn your mic on jessie lopez you need to you need to answer for yourself on that he won't do it because i was hurt he was watching the world cup he was definitely watching the world i mean i thought he was a piston for like half an hour i was confused i don't think he knew either he was wearing a Pistons hat. Yeah, he didn't know either. So that's fair.
Starting point is 00:24:24 Fair defense of yourself. Jesse Lopez, you're back out of the doghouse. It's so funny because all these guys, like you had, you had all these guys wearing Grizzlies hat, none of which are going to play for the Grizzlies. It's like, I didn't. Sometimes this can't untangle it. I'm like, what are the Grizzlies doing?
Starting point is 00:24:40 Did they draft him or not drafted? Then they get the next pick. And they still, they still haven't fixed this. And let me tell you why they need to. fix this. Because as a, and I'm going to speak for all of the sports collector nerds out there like me, you got to change it because these rookie cards have that on there, right? I've got a bunch of Kevin Love Grizzly's rookies. And it makes no, and then the OJ Mayo, he's wearing the Minnesota hat. And it's like, this is stupid. Like, we got to do, we got to fix the hat thing the night
Starting point is 00:25:16 of the draft. We have to. Because Adam Silver is going up there. talking about the trades. Like, just give them the right hat. Well, also, they spent so much time on their hair. Right. You know what I mean? A lot of times the hat is just resting on top of the hair. It just looks ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:25:31 What are we doing? I can't believe I'm having to let Jesse off the hook for him thinking he was a piston. That's fair. That was a good defense. That was a good defense. He is wearing a piston's hat in the interview. However, it became pretty clear about four minutes later that he was, in fact, in Memphis Grizzly, and you could have gotten a text at that point.
Starting point is 00:25:49 That's fair. Also fair. All right. So we look, we went through A-Cuffton. Kingston Fleming's went eight to Atlanta. This kid had the best interviews ever, honestly. Like, Kingston Fleming's so impressive. And then Mores Johnson went nine, which is higher than a lot of people expected. And that's when you know a coach loves a guy. Yes.
Starting point is 00:26:10 Because Dusty May is obviously now the head coach of Dallas. And, you know, he went to bat for this kid. and everybody loved him. He's an absolute dog. Great to get to pair alongside Cooper Flag. And let me just say, I've got an interesting perspective on Dusty May because he might be one of the most unbelievable sliding doors moments in basketball history. Oh, please explain.
Starting point is 00:26:42 Okay, so a couple of years ago, well, this is several years ago now, Memphis basketball had a really good team and they played Florida Atlantic in the NCAA tournament and the game went down to the very end and there's a loose ball and Memphis tries to call timeout and they aren't awarded a timeout
Starting point is 00:27:02 and Florida Atlantic wins a jump ball and they go down they hit the game winner as you know Purdue had gotten knocked out so you get to play like the 16 seed in the next round right and it ended up
Starting point is 00:27:17 Florida Atlantic went all the way to the final four that year. And then based on them going to the final four, he gets the Michigan job. Yep. Does an unbelievable. And it's like, bro, if that timeout is awarded, that timeout's awarded, none of this happens. None of it.
Starting point is 00:27:40 But he went from Florida Atlantic. They end up going to the, you're right, the draw breaks. You end up going to the final four. And he also, and let me just say that, this guy is one of the best basketball coaches on planet Earth. Like, I, as soon as they hired him, I was like, whoa, now. Because I do think, I also think he has like the kind of demeanor for the NBA. And I'm just a huge fan of it.
Starting point is 00:28:05 What he did at Florida Atlantic and then going, taking a step up and going to Michigan, getting that job and winning a national championship there. Didn't take too long either. No, it didn't take too long. No, this guy is a great basketball coach. And also he gets in the building and he's just like, no one has more data, has spent more time with Mores Johnson Jr. than I have.
Starting point is 00:28:24 That's right. That's right. So just trust me on this one. I always said, like, when Reed Shepherd doesn't play, it's like, you know what, they've got a whole staff of people evaluating Reed Shepherd, spending all the time with Reed Shepherd, they know his weaknesses and strengths, and they decide not to put him on the basketball court.
Starting point is 00:28:37 So who am I to say, like, they should play Reed Shepherd for more. You know what I mean? Right. They have all the data. He has all the data on all three of those Michigan kids. He knows this kid. He knows he does. what he brings to the team.
Starting point is 00:28:47 He knows how to use him to get the best out of him. Like all of it. All of them. Then you got to 10 and it was Braden Burry's from Arizona who, again, like all of these guys were like top 10, top 20 high school players. Like they were always supposed to be good. Of course. They're top 10 picks in the NBA.
Starting point is 00:29:11 Right. And then they all, and it all kind of played up. But I mean, there was. Johnson went to Juco. there was no shock though there was nobody like even the morris johnson thing especially after they had hired dusty may everybody's sitting there going and also it tells you something when that's the one he took because there's three of them and he could have taken any of them he could have taken any of them and that's who he took mores johnson i love you and so that wasn't
Starting point is 00:29:42 surprising and then burry's going 10 i mean it's like all right burry's a still on the board. Like, the mock drafts had this nailed this year. Maybe it was a little bit of different order. Yeah, yeah. But, I mean, generally, I'd say all the way down to like 14, those were pretty much the 14 names in everybody's thing. But imagine being nine and going to play for your college coach
Starting point is 00:30:07 with a future star like Cooper Flag, Kyrie Irving is your point guard. and then imagine going 10 and going to the bucks with a new coach, a new locker room, trade rumors everywhere, perhaps some unhappy teammates. Big difference. It's a big difference. Where you get drafted is just,
Starting point is 00:30:30 it always is such a big difference. I think Tyler Jenkins will help a lot. And also, how about this for a crazy story? That story that was going around about John Shire being offered the Dallas job from Duke. So, like, they could have had Cooper Flags coach, possibly, if he would have left. But instead they've got their ninth fix coach, Mores Johnson Jr. Like, there is certainly a familiarity already with the guy that they just used the top 10 pick on.
Starting point is 00:31:00 And look, I both those guys are dogs. I mean, I would be so, I would be over, honestly, like, I would be super thrilled if I was a, a Dallas fan because I'm like, all right, going forward, I'm building around around these two guys who are mega competitors. You know what I mean? Look, the rest after, as I said, 14, unless you want to consider Steinbach, but I mean, everybody had those names.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Some of them were, some of them were like, you know, obviously some people had different order of these, but there wasn't a shock. there wasn't like a whoa moment in any of this. Or really like big trades. There were trades. You know,
Starting point is 00:31:47 like the Knicks moved out and Grizzly did some stuff. I'm glad you brought this up. There weren't like someone moved up to four. You know what I mean? Three first rounders in the future to move up to get a guy. I'm glad you brought this up because obviously this was a point of discussion last night. I had said many times,
Starting point is 00:32:06 as has everybody, that I wasn't particularly setting my sights on 16, which is where Memphis's second pick on, because they never take that pick. Like they always trade up, right? So what you do is you take, just like they did last year when they got such a coward. It's like, all right, we take our middle of the first round.
Starting point is 00:32:24 We give you another first rounder next year to be able to get up to get your guy. They traded down this year. And as you said, there was no movement. and I thought about this last night when I was talking to my friends as we're watching this all play out and I was like, I wonder,
Starting point is 00:32:43 and there's smarter people than me that are going to be able to say if this is true or not. Hard disagree. Yeah, maybe, you know what, you're probably right. There's probably not anybody smarter than me. Did the rules of the way things are going to be going forward? Yes.
Starting point is 00:33:04 impact that specifically, where it's like, bro, as of next year, this is all a crapshoot, whereas this year, this is my sure thing. I know for sure I am getting somebody, whatever, the 12th best available player in the draft, the 13th best available player in the draft. And that going forward, the fact that the traded picks are, also a crap shoot, right? So you would always look at these teams and go, do I want to bet against this team or not bet against this team?
Starting point is 00:33:42 Exactly. Right. And so now the betting against somebody in the future, right? Like, it was gold if you have a Sacramento or Brooklyn pick. Oh, yeah. Right? Because it's like that. And even next year when I think it's Houston,
Starting point is 00:34:01 Houston has Brooklyn's pick next year. Like that pick, don't look as good as it used to. Everyone said to me, they traded five first round picks for Michael Bridges. I'm like, yeah, but let's find out.
Starting point is 00:34:13 Let's look where those first round picks like end up being. Like what players those picks turn into? Because not all first round picks are created equal. That was the old system. Now it's, they're not all created equal, but it's flattened out a lot. It's flattened out a lot.
Starting point is 00:34:27 Right. Oh, yeah. And again, so I think teams like this was a sure thing. This is the last year of this. of this being like, I know where I'm picking. And I think there's going to be a big feeling out process to see how the draft plays out to know because you don't know
Starting point is 00:34:42 who's going to get lucky next year. Like there's no way to know. It used to be you could just bet against sorry teams. You can't do that anymore. Right? Because under the new system, the warriors who did not make the playoffs were bouncing the playing.
Starting point is 00:34:57 Right. Have a pretty good chance of getting a good pick. Right. You know what I mean? They're a good team with stars. You know, Jimmy Butler got hurt. You just can't. And so the point is you can't think about the draft the way you have always thought about the draft.
Starting point is 00:35:12 And so I think teams were much less likely to move off of those in the past. One of the things that was interesting was as the first round is playing out. And it was stark because a guy that I quite liked at Alabama, and I've mentioned a couple of times on the show, Le Baron Phylon, He was like ranked as Jay Billis' best available prospect. So that's always a terrible spot to be in, right? Because you know, you're the best available prospect. And then everybody keeps passing on.
Starting point is 00:35:49 But you're not getting picked. I mean, Shador Sanders had to live with the Mel Khyper's best available on the bottom for like two days. Right. So Phylon's wasn't nearly as bad. But Phylon is that. guy and then he finally gets selected by the Philadelphia 76ers. And the reason this was so fascinating to me is because I was going to be keenly aware not only of where Phylon went, but more importantly, who the Sixers took, and this is going to be one that you might have
Starting point is 00:36:21 forgotten. So one of the reasons when it all went down in the end with Darrell Mori being ousted from Philadelphia. There was a lot of, yeah, and look at what he gave up. Jeremy McCain. And now you look at it. And as of right now, it's LeBaron Phelon and two second round picks. And they kept saying, like, just let it play out. Let it play out.
Starting point is 00:36:50 We're not going to know the return until late. And it's like, you know, if you would have traded Jericho for Philon and two second round picks, that's not that bad. It actually looks like it's great. It's not that bad. Depending on what you think about, you know. And I think McCain has big splashing performances. Like, you know, he has those big ones when he's hot, but he's not always hot.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Well, and that could have looked super ridiculous, right, depending on who they took. Well, also the Thunder could be champions. And McCain could have, you know, 20-point game in a close-out. No question. That was really bad. It still might have been goofy, but it looks way better today than it did yesterday, is what I'm saying. Yeah. It's not time.
Starting point is 00:37:32 to run a victory lap if you're the Sixers' front office. But you're hoping Phylon works out for multiple reasons. Yeah. Other ones that stood out, Obaco, a Corey from Stanford went much higher than most of the mocks had him going. He went higher than mox had him going. A meant might have gone a little bit lower than people had him going. He was getting a lot of camera time when people were about to pick.
Starting point is 00:37:58 And I was like, let's spread this around. A daimara, I thought, could go, I mean, if he would have gone to the top 10, it wouldn't surprise me. And there's no question that when you saw a daimara pick, everybody immediately thought about Wembe. Of course. Oh, they took the 7-3 guy with a 50-foot wingspan. It's just a lot to put on him. Be like, you're going to fix our Wembe problem. He's like, dude, I'm 19.
Starting point is 00:38:23 You know what I just got to the league? No, and so they ended up with a... Do you think there's any... Do you think there's any of the heart-in-stained implications? Oh, that's interesting. I mean... I don't. You don't?
Starting point is 00:38:39 I mean... I mean, they're already starting to, you know, sift through that payroll. You saw them drop Aaron Wiggins and you saw that, you know, I mean, like where you're moving off guys. Isaiah Joe might go. Isaiah Joe, Lou Dort. I mean, again, you're just... And you've got a bunch of, like, obviously, young guy. Oh, Kendrick Williams.
Starting point is 00:38:59 It's another one. that they say they're not going to, you know. So, I mean, that, that roster is going to look significantly different. And the crazy thing is, you know, everybody forgets this. They took the gigantic guy from Georgetown last year. Sorber. Who didn't play. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:15 So they're just going to have like a... Chet, Mara, Sorber, Hartnstein, if they keep him. Yeah. Like, that's a front court. That's a front court. Play them all at once. It's going to be a... It's going to be a...
Starting point is 00:39:30 hell of a pitcher when they take it at media days. It's going to be like our four, four, seven footers all standing next to you. Harder's team might be the shortest. And he might not be on the team, but, because he's going to be expensive, but he had he had some of those big, big games against
Starting point is 00:39:45 Wemby, like game two where you were just like, oh, Hartenstein is the Wemby Stopper. Yep. This episode is brought to you by Weather Tech. Getting a little bit lower in that first round, I think the next surprise might have been Jaden Quaintens, who I've talked about before. This guy was, I mean, a major league recruit, five star, five star, five star,
Starting point is 00:40:52 also a guy that went, I think, at age 17 and went to Arizona State and was awesome, but he blew out his name. And all I'll tell you is there's absolutely a 0.0% chance that Jaden Quentin's goes 20 if he wasn't med flagged by a bunch of teams. Right. Because, I mean, it is, he is one of those that when you're trying to figure out like, all right, what translates to the NBA? And you watch him rebound and block shots and you're like,
Starting point is 00:41:27 uh, that. That part. Like, I mean, we've seen Mitchell Robinson. We've seen Rob Williams. We say, like he looks like so many guys where it's like, I can totally see him. And the good thing is he goes to an unbelievable situation in San Antonio where it's like he can be.
Starting point is 00:41:44 Do you know we need you to do rebound and block shots? No, the same way that you had Al Horford for once upon a time and he brought in Rob Williams or you have, uh, you know, Carl Anthony Townsend, you bring him Mitchell Robinson. You watch, he's the kind of guy that plays 16 minutes and has 12 points of 10 rebounds, just like those guys. Like, he's going to get the ball and he's going to block shots. And it's just, I mean, his knee must be mush because I, I, that's the weird thing.
Starting point is 00:42:14 He's like, he was at the point where it's worth it. You know what I mean? Once you get down to 20, it's worth it. But all I'm telling you is there's 19 other teams that had to have med flagged him because there's no way he drops to 20 unless it's... Well, they also get Terris v. Jr. Who I brought this up last week and the prospector's not even going to get to talk about these guys. I told you two guys... Where is the prospect?
Starting point is 00:42:41 He's coming. Okay. I told you two guys last week, though. And I said Zubi and Taurus Reed that there is going to be an impact. The NBA is ages and there's going to be these guys that were unbelievable in college
Starting point is 00:42:59 that proved to be unbelievable in college and that they are going it seems like much of a I know what I'm getting and people are much more comfortable doing the I know what I'm getting. I mean last
Starting point is 00:43:17 I told you that there's been an assembly line of guys that get conference players of the year, conference tournament players of the year on really good teams, and then end up being good in the NBA, and you're like, wow, I'm surprised at it. Well, I also think you detailed earlier in this pod,
Starting point is 00:43:35 which was intelligent because you are the smartest person, I know. You know what you're getting more now, just in general. Like, there's just less guesswork. No, I mean, what did you, go watch, even if you want to say, well, so again, Furman. Go look, type in Taurus, Tarish Reed-Ferman stats.
Starting point is 00:43:57 That was the first round of the NCAA tournament. I missed that game. Huh? I miss that game. Okay, I'm going to tell you, hold on, Taurus. Tars Reed Jr.
Starting point is 00:44:09 No, no, no, no. Furman stats. Okay. Here we go. Here it pops up. Tarris Reed Jr. posted 31 points and 27 rebounds while shooting.
Starting point is 00:44:21 while shooting 12 of 15 to lead Yukon over Furman in the first round of the NCAA tournament. 31 and 27. Like, what are we talking about? 27 rebounds. That is outrageous. That's a lot of rebounds. I was watching the game. 31 and 27.
Starting point is 00:44:48 Every basketball was his. it was outrageous. It is. It's interesting. If you think about the spurs and what they're trying to do, it feels like they're trying to replace cornet. I think they're trying to replace cornet.
Starting point is 00:44:59 They're like, also we've got a, we've got a tall 7-5 guy that needs a little protection and let's just, I mean, these guys are bruisers, both of them. Quaintance and Reed,
Starting point is 00:45:10 good luck, ball comes off the rim. Good luck if that's who's playing power forward and center. You ain't getting the ball, brother. Oh, you know what? One of the interesting is they would do. There's a lot.
Starting point is 00:45:19 of Wemby contests the offensive player shoots some crazy floater but it leads to an offensive rebound because Wemby contests and I think that they're going to shore that up.
Starting point is 00:45:33 Well, here's the other thing. And they weren't big. That was one thing about them and they were playing the Knicks. I was like, yeah, they've got a huge guy who's very tall but he's not strong and then the Knicks are kind of bigger everywhere else except point card.
Starting point is 00:45:44 Also with this team, like this is toughness for when you have to play somebody like Knicks. Also, like, when you know your major competition is Oklahoma City, hey, bring your 180 pounds seven footer and we'll bring these Rob Wylers. Because when they just got these guys, I'm telling you, these guys rebound rates are bananas. And they all get six fouls. And they're tough as shit. And so it's like, all right, we're going to bring the, we're, this suit, we're bringing to the party. That ball comes off the rim. Do I want,
Starting point is 00:46:19 Chaden Quaintens or do I want to die Mara? Because I'm telling you one of them is getting thrown in the third row. And I think they're basically... And no, it ain't Chaden Quentin's brother. I think they're basically just saying one of these is going to hit. Oh, yeah. Oh, and also they had a success with this. Years ago, they took a guy whose knees were wrecked in Duan Blair.
Starting point is 00:46:42 And he was helpful for him. Like, you played a pit and whatever. And it's like, you're in a position with them where it's like, bro, what if this guy. All right, let's say his knees go to crap after four or five years. Okay. All right. We got four or five years of every rebound. 27 rebound.
Starting point is 00:47:02 So they were super interesting. Like the way the Spurs, I loved it. I did. I thought it was interesting too. I loved what the Spurs did. I did. And it's also the Spurs and the Thunder, you just have organizational faith that they know what they're doing. No question.
Starting point is 00:47:19 You do wonder on some of these guys. You know, once you get past the top 20, that's the other interesting thing, is you wonder how many of these guys go, damn, man, I should have just gone and played another year at college, been big man on campus and made by $5 million. Okay, counterpoint. Because now I got drafted in the 20s.
Starting point is 00:47:42 Counterpoint. Or I'm still on the board. There's some of these guys that did not get drafted. So they don't have guaranteed contracts. counterpoint. When you get drafted 20 through 30, a lot of times you're going to a good team like the Spurs. Fair enough. You know what I mean? That makes a
Starting point is 00:47:55 world of difference. You know, going to an organization like the Spurs versus many other organizations that I don't need to name. And some of them might have done good with just the fifth, right? Like where it's like Coa P goes from Arizona and now he's getting to go down the street to Phoenix.
Starting point is 00:48:12 And he was the 30th pick in the draft, even if he slipped. CNAQ who was a massive high school recruit who went and played at Houston, right? He's going and playing in Boston. And so you're right. The play in development there. That's the thing is...
Starting point is 00:48:29 It might be best for your development. It's long term. You might get yourself a second contract because you are a contributor on a winning team that's playing national games. And then even if you don't get a second contract with that team, you might get one somewhere else. Yeah, I really thought, especially with,
Starting point is 00:48:46 with the apron, the second apron, with teams looking and going, here's how we, here's how we want to build out our team to compete next year. I thought there would be way more movement. Yeah, well. Also, also, no trades, no trades that involved players.
Starting point is 00:49:04 Yeah, none. Like NBA player. That's what was weird. Not a single one. If you look at draft history, even, I mean, they're not always big, huge blockbusters, but usually someone moves somewhere.
Starting point is 00:49:15 or future picks. I'm moving. Yeah, I'm moving this player and this pick. To go up four or five spots. There's none of that going. I think the flatten lottery odds had a lot to do with that. You do. I think they had a lot to do with that.
Starting point is 00:49:29 Just the unknown of the future. And just like, if you're in the playoffs or you kind of have an even chance to get the number one pick. It's kind of how it works now. Yeah, one ball, two ball, three balls, whatever, Lance Armstrong. But like, why are we, why are we like, the odds don't change that much? You know what I mean? Right.
Starting point is 00:49:53 And the next thing was weird. Can we just talk about the Knicks for a second? I know this one in the championship. And I'm whatever. But it's just weird to watch them just like move down, move down, get out, save money. Oh, man. And there's already a report there. They're moving out of 31.
Starting point is 00:50:07 They got the first round to second round. I think it's a second round. Okay. Sure. sure. Oh, I mean, look, getting second round picks is the most, it's like a smart thing your team can do so you have them.
Starting point is 00:50:26 Says the guy that got five second round picks yesterday. No, but it's not fun. It's only fun. It's only fun when your team then uses those. And it's like, all right, here's two second rounders for Aaron Wiggins. Here's two second rounders for Marcus Smart. It is how you attain a player that somebody's trying to offload. So they do come up and they are useful so that you can throw them and have them as, you know, interwar chest as trades.
Starting point is 00:50:55 But it's not fun to acquire them. No, it's not. But they're always sort of like the toy and the happy meal in a trade. It's like, you know, they traded such and such and two first round picks and a second round pick. You know what I mean? It's like, it's always that. Yes. So should have some happy meal toys.
Starting point is 00:51:10 Well, and also like if there is somebody that you're just trying to offload. Like, look, you can get Julius Randall for second round pits. Wild. That's how that works, though. I mean, you know I'm not a big Randall fan, but like. It's just somebody that's, you're, I figured you had already bought your net season tickets. No, too expensive. You're not going to afford those either.
Starting point is 00:51:32 They should just have on their media guide, him and Porter Jr. just fighting over the ball. Like, wrestling it away from each other. That is going to be unbelievable. Well, and honestly, like, that's why I thought John Morant would work because you could put him on the poster. You know what I mean? Like, you could put John Morant on the
Starting point is 00:51:51 poster, put a big, put his face in a big billboard outside of the building. No, they should just get at a poor Mackell Brown. He probably knew, like, bro, I'm never touching the ball. That's why he was depressed last night in the green room. It was like, oh my God. Because he's a chucker, too. They should go get
Starting point is 00:52:08 Cam Thomas back, dude. McHell Brown, I was, when I looked at the tape at him, I was like, Why doesn't this work? I'm like, he can shoot from so far away and drive. I mean, those finishes are going to be a lot harder in the NBA. Right. Sure. But he'll adjust.
Starting point is 00:52:21 I liked him. I really like the draft all of it. One loser from the draft, because I'm so used to seeing this man that it no longer jars me. But my wife and sister-in-law have not been exposed to Adam Silver and his presentation that much. It was a tough, tough living room for Adam Silver. You thought he looked like a villain. Yes. There was a lot discussed that was not respectful to our commissioner,
Starting point is 00:52:50 who is a very nice gentleman. I've happened to met a couple times. And I was just, it was interesting, because I'm just so used to it. You know what I mean? But it's interesting to see his presentation exposed to neutral non-MBA fans. Well, you know, when the kids say you get, you get maugged, right? That's like if I one up to you, like you got bogged, right?
Starting point is 00:53:11 right? This guy, he got mugged by Goodell. Because Goodell is like humping these guys when they get drafted. You know what I mean? Bill did a whole segment on it. Yeah, it's a lot. The hugs are getting longer and longer and longer.
Starting point is 00:53:28 And Adam Silver is still all business. It's like, bro, the guy from the NFL, he's like, I prefer all business. Oh, really? I prefer all business. Oh, I think it's way funnier if they like just, you know. act like their family. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:44 The Goodell thing makes me laugh so hard. I mean, he's dapping them up. Oh, yeah. Well, it's all coordinated. I think they coordinate.
Starting point is 00:53:50 It's like we're going to do dapp hug. Yeah. You know? Yes. Whereas he's like, yeah, he does a picture. He does a picture,
Starting point is 00:53:58 handshake picture. Yeah. A lawyer. Yeah. And also, if you get traded something, just come back out with a different hat. We'll take the picture again during a commercial break.
Starting point is 00:54:07 No question. All right. How hard is that? Look, we're going to have to get this podcast up so people can listen to it before. the second round of the NBA draft. I'm going to go get.
Starting point is 00:54:15 You're never going to believe who showed up at the house. And your house? Yeah, he's here. I'm going to go get him. The prospector? He's here. I'm going to go get it.
Starting point is 00:54:24 Oh, God. He's definitely in the kitchen, eating everything in the fridge because he's been hard at work. The prospector, we haven't heard from him for months. Do you want to know why we haven't heard from him for months?
Starting point is 00:54:33 Because he does more research on these prospects than anybody. He doesn't just go into YouTube and put someone's name in and watch a seven-minute clip. That's how I prep for the draft. The prospector, he researches, he hires private investigators, he talks to a large network of coaches, scouts, and he has a bunch of historical data that he goes into.
Starting point is 00:54:57 He also has medical information and 23 and Me genetic information on every single prospect, that he then runs through an algorithm that spits out. Where's that sorry-ass podcast? The prospector, ladies and gentlemen. My time to shine. Oh, prospector. So, yeah, I know you've been prospecting. I'd hardly hear you through my earbox.
Starting point is 00:55:21 Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it. We're here to listen. We're here to listen. We're here to listen. All right. Prospector. Obviously, the first round of the NBA draft was last night.
Starting point is 00:55:30 I know you're very prepared for this and you evaluate these prospects intensely. Were there any picks that you just sort of didn't love last night? Last time Golden State took a guy from Michigan, he got his ass beat. This guy will get his ass beat, too. Raymond Green is going to hate Jacksonburg. And you see that kid last night? He went and did the interview. You know what the first thing you said was?
Starting point is 00:55:58 I hate Stephen. I hate Sam. The prospector told you this kid was goofy. He told you the kid was goofy. You can go back to. months ago when the prospector was on. He said, Yaxel, get him out,
Starting point is 00:56:18 get him out, got no use for him. Who was the other one the prospector told you about months ago? You tell me. Nate, amen. Eat a sandwich. No chance.
Starting point is 00:56:30 It's like, hey, we just traded Yonis, have fun with this piece of crap. If anybody in the history of the world was a buck, it's Nate Amman. man, those poor saps, those poor saps taking Nate Ahman. Yeah, he'll be good in 10 years.
Starting point is 00:56:51 Unfortunately, he'll be in Europe. That pick sucked. He did see a little bit. Oh, man, exactly what I thought. Those are two that stood out. I can't believe they took them. And when the prospector's right, the prospector's right. The kid literally took to the podium.
Starting point is 00:57:12 and said, I hate it the greatest player in the history of your organization. Kerr's going to hate him. Graham's going to hate him. What did I tell you? Why does nobody listen to what the prospector said? And you should have known when Dusty May didn't take him. He's like, I don't want that goofy son of a bitch. And he's 24.
Starting point is 00:57:35 He's got no excuse. My God, he's 24 friggin' years old. No wisdom. No wisdom. Prosspector. Oh man. Those ones. Didn't like them.
Starting point is 00:57:53 The Prospector, first of all, just thank you for your presence and your insight. I know that you go deep and dive deep in your research when you're looking at these players. And it's not just about the first round for you. It's about the second round. The second round is this evening. That's where the prospector shines.
Starting point is 00:58:10 Please explain. in the second round that's where he shined well that's when you're digging for gold that's what I say you find some shiny rocks that's when you're digging for gold Jacoby
Starting point is 00:58:23 find some shiny rock you're digging for gold in the second round and that's where the prospector shines what do you look for in the second round there's a couple of different kinds of players in the second round that the prospector loved first
Starting point is 00:58:37 the I was always supposed to be good category. These are guys that were previously highly ranked, but now they have fallen for one reason or another. Another one is guys that were super accomplished, but they're seniors. And so the agist NBA holds it against them, but in the end, when they end up being good in the NBA, you're like, oh, well, this guy did do. this and they did do this.
Starting point is 00:59:13 Like, he showed us he was good when he was in college, but everybody had different reasons. We just saw a little kid who was once named Jalen Brunson win an NBA championship, and he said, what did they miss about me? Everything. And what I'm telling you is there's all manner of guys that get drafted in the second round where it was like, what did you want me to do? My team won.
Starting point is 00:59:41 I was mega accomplished. What'd you want me to do? So those were the kind of guys. And then, you know, obviously there's frets of nature. There's also beyond frets of nature. There's tough guys. Prospector always likes tough guys. Prospector love tough guys.
Starting point is 00:59:57 All right, well, now that we know the types of players that you look for in the second round, what specific players in this night's draft second round do you have that fit those profiles? Oh, I didn't do all that research. Oh, okay. What? Thank you.
Starting point is 01:00:16 Thank you for allowing, thank you for letting us know the type of player that you look for in the second round and advance in the second round. Yeah, yeah, we're just looking for time. That's how you dick for gold. That's a dick for gold. You just look for types. Just kidding. Prospector's got name. Oh.
Starting point is 01:00:30 Oh. Come on. The prospector. He'd been preparing for this moment his whole life. Now, guys that were supposed to be. good. Isaiah Evans was a five-star recruiting the 13th ranked
Starting point is 01:00:46 player in a loaded high school class. Played at Duke, can shoot the cover off the ball, still in the green room. I think he slept there last night he didn't get taken. He's one that applies.
Starting point is 01:01:02 Another one that applies. Malik Thomas, he is paying for the crimes of Rob Dillingham. Ain't his fault. Malik Thomas also ranked in the top 15 of his high school class, a bucket might be like a Malik Monk type. Right?
Starting point is 01:01:24 Malik Thomas, another Calipari Guard, by the way. So there's Isaiah Evans, Alex, Malik Thomas, and I'm going to give you the deepest cut of all of them. Oh, I love this. The deepest cut. This guy was ranked as a top 10 high school player. but nobody knows it. Because it happened like 10 years ago.
Starting point is 01:01:49 Dylan Mitchell. Dylan Mitchell. Okay. That's some work to do. He was ranked eighth in his class. Went to Texas. If he would have come out after his freshman year, he's one of those guys with high upside
Starting point is 01:02:04 that somebody probably takes high in the NBA draft. He's still sitting around in the second round. He cannot shoot. Oh. He can't throw a basketball through a 60- TV from five feet away. But here's the trick with Dylan. Guess what he doesn't do?
Starting point is 01:02:24 Shoot. The prospector loves guys that know exactly who they are. I don't shoot because that's not what I do. But he rebounds, he passes, he dribbles, he makes his teammates better, he defends like a condor, and he played for that good St. John's team, so you know he'll defend. And he was always supposed to be really good. I'd take a project like him. I'd say, look, I can teach him how to shoot well enough because he does all the other stuff.
Starting point is 01:02:59 Him and Trayvon Brazil from Arkansas, very Herb Joneses. You know what I mean? Where it's like another guy, the prospector, look, once upon a time. It's like, there's a place for you when you're a. a mega athlete that's long as crap and can defend. And so those are names to watch out for Dylan Mitchell, maybe even a little Brazel, Trayvon Brazzles. The other ones, so Brazzles kind of the freak of nature type more. He's more of the freak of nature, not like the huge high school.
Starting point is 01:03:34 And that kid, that poor kid blew out his knee or else he would have been a first rounder three years ago, too. So we got Isaiah Evans, Malik Thomas, Dylan Mitchell is the deep cut Then you've got tough guy Ryan Conwell, the prospector was watching the NCAA tournament where Louisville played Michigan State and they played them without the kid that just got drafted
Starting point is 01:03:56 number six overall, Mikkel Brown. Ryan Conwell was their best player and this kid hurt his foot to where he's limping around everywhere in the game and he has to go back and it's like oh god they are already playing without mckell brown now they lost ryan codwell right he comes out at halftime and the prospector wrote this down during the NCAA tournament because he never forget stuff like this they interviewed the kid this kid gets on the microphone and he said they asked him how are you feeling because he was limping around everywhere
Starting point is 01:04:32 this kid gets in the microphone he goes i'm good i'm blessed I'm going to give it everything I have no matter how I feel. And he went out there with the bump foot and gutted that thing out the entire app and the prospector wrote it down. Give me that guy. I want guts. I want guys like that. I don't care how I feel. I'm playing as hard as I can.
Starting point is 01:04:59 And then there's one more. There's two more. I'm sorry. Two more. Darren Peterson, AJ DeBonsta. Kingston Fleming's. Okay. There's like 15 of them that were all in the Big 12, right?
Starting point is 01:05:16 Mm-hmm. Who was Big 12 player of the year? Tell me. Jaden Bradley from Arizona. Mm. A.J. DeBonsta, Kingston Fleming, Darren Peterson, Chris Seenack, on and on and on and on and on. All played in the Big 12.
Starting point is 01:05:38 Who was the conference tournament player MVP? Jayden Bradley from Arizona. All the other Arizona guys have already gotten drafted, right? Yeah. All I'm telling you is this. I'm not going to be shocked if we look back and go, oh, wow, the guy who won conference player of the year, conference tournament player of the year,
Starting point is 01:05:59 and was on a team that was 36 and 3 in the best team in the country, turned out to be good. All I read, the prospector looks up what everybody wrote about, Jaden Bradley, and it's all just a list of crap he can't do. Well, how the hell does he have all the trophies? That's a great point. That's a great point, Prospectory.
Starting point is 01:06:21 If he can't do anything, how does he win? Sounds like Jalen Brunson. How did he get Player of the Year? How did he get conference tournament MVP? How did he get all of this shit? The guy has got a full trophy room, and everybody is listed the million things he can't do. what can he do?
Starting point is 01:06:43 Why does he win everything? He's still on the board. And then I'm going to throw out one other name. And this is just a, I do one thing, but I'm amazing at it. These are always good second round fines. There's one, and he's either projected to not go tonight or get undrafted. But his name is Tyler Bilidow. From UCLA.
Starting point is 01:07:15 And you say, who is that? It's a big white guy that shoots. Oh. These guys have spots in the league, right? Like we look up and there's Baylor Shireman and there's Duncan Robinson and Dean Wade and Sam Merrill or whatever. Like, I don't know if this kid can do anything else, but he is an unbelievable shooter. He shot 46% from three and he's huge. He's like 6-9, 6-10, Tyler Bilidot.
Starting point is 01:07:44 So it's like, all right, I don't know anything else. I know this guy can do this, and he can shoot. He can shoot it. So if you want somebody that can shoot the ball, and they may target him on defense, all this other crap, but there's a spot for a guy that can just knock down every shot. So, I mean, prospector. Prospector.
Starting point is 01:08:07 He just laid out the whole second round for you. Anybody else doing that? Nope. Nope. Nope. What happened to the prospector's life? What happened? Yeah, the prospector, he's just been working very hard. He's not prepared. I'm about to prepare for next year's draft by looking at an hour and a half of highlights of the finished freak.
Starting point is 01:08:25 And that's going to be it for the mismatch this episode. I want to thank Steph, Jeff, and Jesse Lopez. You're welcome. And I also want to thank the prospector for stopping by, Berneau. I'm glad you asked. I'll see you later this week.
