Starting point is 00:00:00 Here we go, Wednesday, August 7th. I am A.J. Hawks, sitting in for the great Pat McAfee on the Pat McAfee Show. Pat's in Connecticut handling some business with ESPN. All right. Here we go, boys. I don't know about you guys, but there was a lot of decent stuff on TV last night. Some great, some decent, I think. I think Hard Knocks, we all know, was fun to watch.
Starting point is 00:00:22 If you're a Bears fan, I think you have to feel pretty good about where they're at, where they're going, and really what it looks like behind the scenes there. Brandon Ayuk, boys, I don't know where he's going, what he's going to do. We're going to have Michael Lombardi. No, he's not going. Shut up. Yeah, we'll see.
Starting point is 00:00:36 It's not great for one member of the toxic table. Boston Conner, what's going on? So reports are Brandon Ayuk took himself out of the running for the New England Patriots, right? Can you explain what happened? So allegedly what happened was trade in place. Niners agreed to the trade terms that the Patriots offered them. And then the next step, of course, was negotiating a deal with Brandon Ayuk and his agent. That went well as well.
Starting point is 00:01:01 The offer was sent over. Schefter is not in this tweet, but allegedly in the $30 million range. And Brandon Ayuk and his agent were basically playing patty cake, saying, yeah, all right, we'll think about it. No, we're not going to play New England. Now, I can't fault the guy. There's a quarterback there right now on a one-year deal who's the starter, Jacoby Brissett.
Starting point is 00:01:23 Nobody knows what Drake May is going to be at, even though signs at the moment are very, very good, aside from the reports from people that don't know anything in New England. But, yeah, you can't fault the guy. He doesn't want to go to New England. Sounds like he only wants to go to Pittsburgh. It is a nightmare scenario for Patriots fans. We are in the official era of why the hell would I want to go play
Starting point is 00:01:44 for that poopy franchise, that poopy team. I don't feel that way, of course. I am all in on the Patriots this year, and the reports out of the Patriots camp is because of the fact that there was some kind of tomfoolery going around, some things where they
Starting point is 00:02:00 didn't feel like the reciprocation from IU's camp was very genuine. They were like, all right, you know what? Why are we even screwing around with paying a guy $30-plus million who doesn't want to be here? Forget about him. Let's go with Jalen Polk.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Let's go with Javon Baker. Let's go with the guys in our building. Focus on them. Now, hopefully, Kendrick Bourne returns to camp because he wasn't there yesterday. I assume he's there today, but also the biggest thing that could come from this for New England is just pissing off one of the players that is supposed to be leader,
Starting point is 00:02:31 cornerstone, kind of the guy that is going to carry this new era of Patriot football into the future. So basically nightmare for the Patriots across the board. We're not getting Iuke. There's a chance we pissed off Kendrick Bourne, our best receiver at the moment. And we wasted a bunch of time, and now we look like shit. So things aren't too good as far as being a Patriots fan,
Starting point is 00:02:56 but I have the utmost faith in Gerard Mayo, Drake May, and the entire staff and players over in New England. Oh, yeah, we know you do, Con. Darius Butler, what do you think here when you hear that IU takes himself out of it or doesn't really want to go to New England, just strictly because he doesn't really, like Drake Mays untested or he hasn't played in the NFL yet? We haven't seen him in any live reps? Yeah, we kind of talked about it yesterday.
Starting point is 00:03:15 We put those odds up, you know, where the Patriots are obviously expected to finish going from, you know, a contender, a title contender every year. And Sam Fram, I'm sure he wants to go somewhere where he feels like he can at least contend, win, get to the playoffs, do those things. I mean, being in the $30 million range, we said it yesterday, like at this point, we think he just wants to get paid. But obviously, he wants to go somewhere and win as well. And Kyle Shanahan, he said, hey, it's a possibility
Starting point is 00:03:38 this guy can still be here. We heard Christian McCaffrey yesterday kind of misspeak and say, oh, former teammate, and kind of fix it and say teammate. So it seems like he's definitely on his way out. It'll be interesting to see how it unfolds. I know Tone and Nick are pretty jacked up right now that he'll be in Pittsburgh soon, what it looks like. Yeah, let's go back to the Hammer Studios.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Tone Diggs, Tone, development for you, I guess. I know you're back there, as they say, going six to midnight. You can't see me if you look left, yeah. Yeah, whatever's going on, you're not around that corner, I guess. I know you're back there as they say, you're going six to midnight. You can't see me if you look left. Whatever is going on, you're not around that corner, I guess. That's how the movie magic works with all these cameras. What do you think? I hear your squad, the Steelers, all of a sudden we hear they're out of it.
Starting point is 00:04:15 There's no chance. We're not going to get Iuke. And then, bam, here we go. It feels like they're the frontrunner. Now, if you look at all the little signs and the smiley faces from Coach Tom when he's looking at the camera, kind of smirking, thinking, yeah, this is my guy. We're going to do it. Now if you look at all the little signs and the smiley faces from Coach Tom when he's looking at the camera kind of smirking, thinking, yeah, this is my guy. We're going to do it.
Starting point is 00:04:28 What do you think, Tone? Yesterday around 12-17, Shefty came on and kind of pretty much said, hey, Steelers are out of it, okay? Well, guess what? Why did that happen, Tone? Honestly, why did we think the Steelers were out? Well, the early morning report was that it was Patriots and Browns and that the Niners were looking for a wide receiver in return
Starting point is 00:04:47 and that the Steelers were not ready to meet the 49ers' demand so that they were out of it. That was the situation at that time. And then things changed. Things are very, very fluid in the NFL. Yeah. And apparently things change. But him wanting to come to the Steelers is what's being reported.
Starting point is 00:05:09 The only difference between the Patriots. Patriots and Steelers are both six Super Bowl champion winning five-star franchises. They both have quarterback questions right now. But the one is it's Gerard Mayo's first year versus Mike Tomlin, who I guess has a good relationship with Iuke apparently. Iuke's always liking Mike Tomlin's Instagram pictures, stuff like that. So Tomlin's got to be the difference in this. It has to be.
Starting point is 00:05:33 And that's Mike Tomlin football because that's what he does. I am pumped. I've been – this is – you know me. I'm a roller coaster of emotion. It's not a done deal, though. You're acting like it's a done deal. I'm far from it. No, actually, the longer it goes
Starting point is 00:05:46 on, it feels like he might just go back to Niners. It's kind of where I'm at right now. But if he comes to Steelers, I have now gotten to the point where I'll be very, very happy. Wow. Todd Schmidt, what do you make of this whole situation? Where do you think Ayuk ends up? Kind of like what Diggs just said, I feel like if this doesn't happen
Starting point is 00:06:01 kind of somewhat soon here, then he's just going to end up back in San Francisco. It seems like we get this a lot anytime there's a player who's pissed off and it's like a premier player like this everyone gets really excited because we love seeing guys changing teams we get all the you know tweets online of like the jersey swaps and stuff like that and then more often than not these guys end up just playing on the current deal and then maybe he'll be somewhere next year. But I don't know. It seems like, like D-Butts said, you know, with Christian McCaffrey, and granted he's not, you know, negotiating with Shanahan
Starting point is 00:06:31 and Lynch about trading him, but it seems like he does, he is on his way out, and when there's smoke, there typically is fire. But it does seem like the type of thing where, like, this needs to get done today, and if it doesn't get done today, then who knows if it'll get done tomorrow and end up just dragging on and on until eventually it's week one and he's playing with the 49ers regardless of how pissed off he is about not having a new contract because all these all these teams are gonna have to move on right at one point they're gonna have to be like hey you know we're tired of of we have to move on with the team that
Starting point is 00:07:01 we have so they're all gonna drop out. Yeah, and that's exactly what happened with New England. That was the entire report at the end of the reporting last night from both Shefty and all the insiders and Matt Maioco from San Francisco, NBC, of course. Maioco. But it does stink. This is the reality that the Patriots are in now, and a lot of teams. I mean, Cleveland's not in this exact same boat, and the Steelers aren't,
Starting point is 00:07:26 but there's just so many questions. What do they tell Kendrick Bourne? What do you say to him? Do you think they communicated throughout the process? Like, yeah, we're always looking to add guys. I'm not saying you're here. But, yeah, what do you do? Yeah, I think they were transparent with him, and they told him, like, yes,
Starting point is 00:07:37 this is something that we're pursuing, but it's not a done deal, obviously, if you don't want to be here today, if this conversation was yesterday. If you don't want to be here today at practice, was yesterday if you don't want to be here today at practice completely understand because there is a chance that you get moved it's not a guarantee uh and then hopefully kendrick bourne kind of understands that side of it and doesn't come back like oh oh oh am i okay now you still want me over brandon iuk is that is that fine but i assume when it when it is a player like Brandon Iyuki, it's not as if we're trying to trade for some unproven kind of schlub.
Starting point is 00:08:10 This is Brandon Iyuki. He was unbelievable last year. Ty said it yesterday. 75% of his catches were first downs or touchdowns. Come on now. There's levels to this shit. And I think also part of it is that we're not trading you to some bottom feeder. If you do get traded, you're going to the Niners.
Starting point is 00:08:25 You're going to have a legit shot to win a Super Bowl next year. You're already comfortable in the situation. Obviously, guys, you never want to be traded, and you want to feel like the team that you're on wants you and values what you can do, but it's not like they were. That's a pretty good situation to go to if you are going to get traded. Oh, it's a great situation. I think we go to the phone.
Starting point is 00:08:47 Zito says we got a special guest here. Let me see if it's actually. Boom. Here we go. What's up, Pat? There he is. My guy. What's up?
Starting point is 00:08:54 Boys, fresh out of corporate America, okay? That was some of the wildest stuff I've ever experienced in my entire life. We're sitting there. We're doing the whole learning stuff. There's decks and presentations and speakers. It was awesome. Something got a little long. I will say something got a little long.
Starting point is 00:09:14 I was pacing in the back of the room. I thought my head was going to explode at one point. Three hours into something, you certainly do a little toy. Is there Q&A? Can we give and take? Can you throw out possibilities? What are we like given can you can you is there you know q and a can we give and take can you throw out possibilities like what are we doing yeah funny you ask about that aj because you and i i think the only meetings we've ever been a part of that are something like this or like team meeting i don't know how you are aj i assume very different than me in these team meetings but i was an active participant you know in these team meetings so
Starting point is 00:09:42 something good say hell yeah hell yeah you know a couple of hell yeah hell yeah hell yeah a couple okay okay you know that's how yeah you keep these things alive you know you keep these things alive so early in this uh conference meeting yesterday you know i tested it like you know i just felt like back in team meeting yeah i gave a couple hell yeah hell yeah in the middle of something and boy nothing it was real quiet it was real quiet is kirk in there is kirk or some people that know like hey this is what you know pat's trying to you know bring some pizzazz to this thing yeah i think kirk's done this like 20 years so he knew when i was when i was you know like he he'd see me it was real quiet in there but nonetheless okay i learned a lot of things i tried twice too First one didn't go
Starting point is 00:10:25 But then I thought the room understood what I was doing So just like JB with his Who expect we expect Let's redo it Yeah so there was another moment That came shortly after And I gave a hell yeah hell yeah One of those same exact
Starting point is 00:10:40 Same exact You look around Tough crowd I was wearing a tank top Everybody had suits on Same exact. Same exact. Do you look around? You look around. Oh, tough crowd. What do you do? Nobody, huh? Yeah. I was wearing a tank top. Everybody had suits on.
Starting point is 00:10:50 I mean, it was. Sweet. All right. I had shorts on, a hat in this thing. I'm in the back. Hell yeah, hell yeah. And it's like. And good people, though.
Starting point is 00:11:03 I can't stress this enough. Sounds like a i i so a few speakers blew you away though sounds like you're impressed by a couple of guys that spoke d but listen you and i are on the same page for all this i think and anybody that's ever been a student human athlete that watched a lot of people profit and benefit off a lot of your friends hard work and then also knowing what a lot of your friends, like, where they come from and what ended up happening to them. And then watching, like, I watched West Virginia, both the university, the football program, the attendance, the enrollment, everything. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:37 Go through the roof with Pat White, Steve Slayton, Owen Schmidt, Darius Raynaud, Reed Williams. Like, Noel Devine joined, a couple of Jock Sanders, like, then Geno Smith carries it on afterwards, but, like, that crew that I watched, like, from a front row seat, being the lowest person on the totem pole, and what happened to everything, and then
Starting point is 00:11:57 what ends up happening with Pat White, and ends up happening with Steve, and ends up happening with Owen, and D-Ray played in the NFL for a bit as a returner and wide receiver and a running back, great player, but not like full long-term. And then you see what happens. It's just like I've always been a critic of the NCAA. That has been very, very apparent because of that type of stuff. Always felt like the NCAA was holding back student athletes
Starting point is 00:12:17 from profiting or making money. And now we're in this brand-new era, and I had zero hope that anybody was going to be able to figure it out. I'll tell you what. This dude, Charlie Baker, he set the new president of the NCAA, I think within the last year. Former governor of Massachusetts. I just learned this. I just learned.
Starting point is 00:12:36 I did not know he was governor of Massachusetts. So I do not know his political world or political experience or political decisions as governor of Massachusetts. But what he did in that room this morning, explaining and laying out the vision, acknowledging all the things that have been so stupidly done by the NCAA, also acknowledging that there's levels to this, but we need to care about everybody while also understanding the reality of a situation with big-time sports that generate a lot of revenue. With the salary cap and revenue- revenue sharing thing for the future and then
Starting point is 00:13:05 the hell it's like this guy 45 minutes and then he answered questions it was almost like whenever i heard roger goodell speak to the team before the lockout it it was phenomenal this dude said shit i think he dropped uh i think he said like uh he had a couple like shots at himself a couple shots at the ncaa like little quick little jabs while Pete Thamel, who was interviewing, Pete Thamel dropped a quagmire of governance. And I forget a couple other words in his questions. Literally, I said it in a tweet, like 200 times more optimism after the meeting than whenever I walked into that meeting about the future being figureoutable, if that makes sense. Because I just thought it was a task that was unfigureoutable. Yeah. It feels like there's some real work being done by Charlie and team to try to figure it out while not worrying about all the, like, minuscule ticky-tack bullshit that they seemingly have of the past.
Starting point is 00:14:03 It was very, very enlightening and comforting. Like, legit. It was really good. Like, I'm very happy I came to this. Because I listen to the refs speak. This guy, Steve. Steve Shaw is a weapon. He has his own logo.
Starting point is 00:14:17 I said it to you guys. He's the officials guy. Like, there was a lot of people that talked. I learned a lot at this thing. But, boy, a lot of learning. You know, know three and a half four hours straight of sitting down and just listening you know it's tough to digest i paid i went to the bathroom four or five times you know got it not didn't even have to bathroom obviously a couple times but let's go you hang out with anybody and go to dinner at least like i know they want you guys to hang
Starting point is 00:14:41 that's a that's a big part of it yeah so i was sleeping on a bus in a parking lot because i uh chose to come late to this thing sure so i wasn't at the same hotel as everybody but there was a lot of hangouts and break it was great it was good college football i think is going to be in a great spot going forward because all the people that are seemingly making decisions are acknowledging that a lot of stupid things have been done in the past. So I appreciate that. It's not like, you know what I mean? And they also,
Starting point is 00:15:09 I asked about college football, playoff guy, Lieutenant general, rich Clark from the air force is now the head of the CFP. He spoke. Hey, Hey, here we go. He's been on the job like two months.
Starting point is 00:15:21 Listen to him speak. I'm like, okay, we seemingly in the positions that we need them have wasn't terrible like them speaking out like that you're saying that's good that you're that you're positive and you feel like hey there's a chance because and you have way more confidence now before that like we people think the ncaa is going is going to be obsolete like did people ask him that like what do you what do you do what do you say to people that think
Starting point is 00:15:44 there's no room for the ncaa anymore and we can push them out and do something else so because of so they talked about the relationship between the ncaa and college football playoff like actually i did not know that lieutenant general rich clark head of the cfp was sitting he's retired obviously right in front literally directly in front of me until charlie baker gave him a shout out whenever he was asked about who's in control and everything and he said Rich and I I think he called him Lieutenant General
Starting point is 00:16:11 Rich and I have a great relationship and the guy waved and he was right in front of me and I'm like oh shit this guy runs the this guy runs the fucking college football playoffs of course he does and then he got the president of the NCAA I walked right by him Charlie Charlie Baker, before he spoke, he was sitting next to Pete
Starting point is 00:16:27 Thamel. I didn't know who that was. And I showed up. Let's say the thing starts at 8 a.m. I was there at 7.59. Sure. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. We might have to call him.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Connection. You got us? Might have to call. Oh. Connection. You got us? We might have to call him back. Zeke, I'm sure we'll pod him back up. I mean, that's great. Yeah, that's big. Yeah, that's incredible. I did not expect that. Would you have expected that?
Starting point is 00:16:54 Like, I know when Pat was texting, he tweeted that. Yeah, I definitely would not have expected that. This Charlie Baker must be pretty legit. He's a masked guy. I think you just assume that when it comes like the NCAA, even if it's a new guy, it's like, he's just going to tow the company line. Everyone kind of feels the way they do about
Starting point is 00:17:10 the NCAA. It's probably much easier just to continue to be the heel and be the villain than it is to admit all the faults. Granted, he wasn't the one who was doing a lot of that stuff, but still, I think most people would probably just assume this is what the NCAA is. This guy's just another figurehead to kind of do what they want to do.
Starting point is 00:17:27 But it sounds like that's not the case. That's awesome. Isn't it here? Is the NCAA here? Aren't they based out of Indy? Yeah. Do we have any idea how many people are affiliated with the NCAA or how many officially work for them? It is a massive building.
Starting point is 00:17:38 It's a bunch, right? Like, everywhere. Just think of all the sports that they cover. What do they do? 3,000 employees. I mean, think about the sports that they govern what do they do 3 000 employees i mean think about the olympics that are on right now like a lot of those sports we don't see that often but a ton of those are you know college like i think some colleges have like over 30 sports yeah 30 ncaa programs yeah exactly well that's why the whole thing with like college
Starting point is 00:18:01 football needing to be a little you know separate from the rest of them just because of you know what they mentioned the the tiers of it how the importance of college football versus other sports which is just the reality of the situation you need them though you need yeah of course basketball to kind of finance the other the other sports that don't you know that don't make money don't draw those crowds i know schools that have a powerhouse like how many schools have football powerhouse and somewhat basketball powerhouse? Can you think of any off the top of your head? There's not a ton. Bama's becoming a basketball powerhouse a little bit, but like, yeah, it's very.
Starting point is 00:18:32 Florida had it there for, yeah, in like the mid-aughts. Big deal. It's a big deal. Horford, Tebow in them. But, yeah, that is it. Why can't you do both? Ohio State, like while you were in school. Yeah, definitely, Greg.
Starting point is 00:18:43 Yeah, they definitely have. But I wonder, because you're usually either football or basketball school. Yeah, definitely, Greg. They definitely have. I wonder because you're usually either football or basketball school. Texas back then too. But now it seems like it is incredibly difficult. When I was in school, Michigan State was great at bowling. Yeah. Right. Texas, Tennessee.
Starting point is 00:18:58 UConn had a run, obviously. Well, we're talking about both. Yeah, both. You guys, I guess, yeah. Master champ, one of these men's, and then we were ranked when I was there. You guys, I guess, yeah. Master champ. Did you guys win? And then we, you know, we were ranked when I was there. Fair. Four draft picks in the top couple rounds. How long has Diana Taurasi been playing?
Starting point is 00:19:13 She's 42, 43, so probably like 20 years. Six Olympics. Yeah. Six. Six, yeah. She doesn't age either. She looks the same. She looks so young.
Starting point is 00:19:21 She still is killing people. Still an adult. Yeah. Nuclear weapon. She's fun to watch. And they're on their way. They played today. The U.S. woman do against Nigeria, I believe.
Starting point is 00:19:29 330, right? Yeah. Our U.S. men's team. How much did we win by? 25? 25. No, it was like 40, wasn't it? Yeah, more than that.
Starting point is 00:19:38 They covered. Yeah, it was 26 and a half, right? So now where are we? 122 to 87. Where are we now, Tone? Who are we playing next? When? What's going on?
Starting point is 00:19:44 They won 122-87. Where are we now, Tone? Who are we playing next? When? What's going on? They won 122-87. They move on to the semis against Jokic in Serbia. They play them again. Could be much different. France, Germany on the other side too. I mean, the final four is kind of exactly who we thought it was, aside from those
Starting point is 00:19:59 Canadians up north, pal. What's going on? What happened up there, Goomp? Jamal Murray. What's that? What happened happened up there, Goomp? Jamal Murray. What's that? What happened with your Canadian team, bro? Jamal Murray played like shit the whole tournament. Well, wasn't he already, like, not getting playing time early? I remember I saw him in an interview early on in the Olympics
Starting point is 00:20:15 talking about, like, hey, you got to be ready if you come off the bench, whatever's going on. Jamal Murray, no, he's starting the whole time. I know, but I know the whole team. He and Brooks were supposed to step up and help SGA, and they did not. SGA tried to do it all on his own, and he could not. Yeah, they stepped down. I mean, the real story yesterday was Cole the Hawk, Hawker,
Starting point is 00:20:33 tracking everybody. Talking about him at 1,500 meters, right? Yes, yeah. How many laps is that? I think it's four. Four change? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:40 Cole Hawker. We were watching this live. Indianapolis kid. Ponytail. You see him. He's trying to push through there, and then he's like, all right, here we go. I'm doing it. You can even see.
Starting point is 00:20:49 You guys see the clips of his dad? Oh, yeah. What the fuck? His dad is the man. Look, how difficult does that have to be after that long of a race, and he can pull away like this? He hawks him down. Look at the size of him versus the silver and the bronze, who bronze also an American,
Starting point is 00:21:03 but he is much shorter. This is a big upset, right? Yeah, he's like plus 2,000 to win gold, I think. Wow. And we got gold and bronze first time. We got two medals in 112 years at USA. That's pretty good, huh? We're dominating track and field. 200-meter woman. Also
Starting point is 00:21:19 Gabby Thomas, she won gold as well. And Brittany Brown won bronze. We are racking up the medals. We're first in golds now in the total medal category. Where are we left now as far as the events we have coming up? Do we have much track and field left? Oh, yeah. So you got it.
Starting point is 00:21:37 Like D-Butt said yesterday, you still have the 4x1, 4x2, all of those left. You still got the 200-meter men's final. You got a bunch. You still have a bunch left in the track and field. Pat, you back with us? We're talking some Olympics right now. I hear you might be back. There he goes. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Have we talked about the women's soccer team? What a goal. What a time. What a win. What a save. We haven't yet. I know you're a big fan. Well, I wasn't able to watch it because I was in the middle of a corporate meeting yesterday while it was taking place, but there was a couple people, I won't say any names because I don't want
Starting point is 00:22:04 to, you know, dry snitching, who had the game on their phones uh that were sitting a row or two in front of me that i could see the game pretty much and boy there's some real excitement around our portion of the room whenever they get a big win tony's done a great job on these olympic updates hasn't he oh yeah yeah thank you brother i appreciate it really really dive in you know what i feel like uh more cultured uh this summer than i ever have been yeah me too we we we exactly you know it's not just it's not just the usa athletes either the you see the uh the the cuban wrestler greco roman wrestler who uh me ian lopez i believe his name five straight gold medals first ever to do it wow any sport so good yes especially in such a
Starting point is 00:22:46 physical sport where you need to keep your like you know strength and i guess he went through being like young man strength new guy strength and now he's a dad strength and then like what a phenomenal run by this guy absolute dog he's absolutely is he 41 years old i heard yep so 41 wrestling so it's unbelievably difficult. Just to make the Olympic team year after year, let alone go there and win the gold. So this guy's an absolute freak. I don't think I know the, I don't know the style. I'm sorry, D, but I don't know the style of the wrestling.
Starting point is 00:23:18 Greco, which ones, are they hip tossing? Yeah, they can toss a little bit. It's wrestling, but whatever Greco Roman, there's a little different details. I don't know. I have no idea. I don't know either. Judging by the clips I saw. I think they're hip to hip.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Yeah, I think Pat's correct. And then judging by the clips I saw, I didn't see any ground. I didn't see any ground. You're trying to pin them though. I know the freestyle is the one that is like what we are used to when it comes to wrestling. That's what it is. We'll find out the difference. Yeah, Kurt Angle, broken freaking neck.
Starting point is 00:23:48 Bingo. I just watched that clip a couple days ago. That thing popped up. We got guys in that as well. We are still going with Spencer Lee and Kyle Snyder, I believe. We had a woman yesterday, 20 years old. She's the youngest Olympic wrestler to win gold for the U.S. And there's also
Starting point is 00:24:07 an Indiana girl wrestler, I think, who's doing really well. Let's go. I love it. Indiana's showing up. It is, big time. How about Hawker Hawking down the stretch there? I was watching that. He ran a setup, too. He ran a setup on that thing. He was right behind him
Starting point is 00:24:24 because in his qualifying, he got stuck behind a guy and just had to sneak in for third. So this time, he sets him up almost for this guy to think that he's trying to kind of weave and whoop-de-woom. And then, boom! Slingshot engaged. It's the Naws. It was phenomenal. And then that guy
Starting point is 00:24:40 from Great Britain, I think, is supposed to be the guy. So whenever he pulls away from him, what a play by the Indianapolis kid. Hawker, Hawkins, folks. That was awesome. Hopefully we get to see him do this in many more Olympics. But, Tone, we're going to pivot away from your Olympic talk. We appreciate it. We'll come back to your updates here shortly.
Starting point is 00:24:56 We have a great guest on the line, Pat. We're going to find a way to get us all situated here on the screen together and figure it out. But let's welcome Mr. Michael Lombardi to the show. What's up, Lomba? What's up, guys? How are we doing? How's everybody doing?
Starting point is 00:25:09 AJ, nice to see you in the big chair, man. I like it. Oh, yeah. Pat's got some – and he's in corporate America for the last couple days, so I come in here and get to sit in here and hang out. I need to find out what's going on there. You need an attorney? Are you good?
Starting point is 00:25:24 Well, no, I think I should be good. Not this time. Who might need an attorney? What's Ayuk doing? Lombo, we've asked you about him before. What teams are you going to? We hear these teams are in and they're out and they're in and they're out. We don't know.
Starting point is 00:25:35 What's happening? Well, I think the bigger thing is the Niners have basically threw up their hands and said we can't get a deal done. I think every time in a negotiation when when you try to get a deal done, the marketplace determines the deal. And with this receiver market, the way it's been, it should be an easy deal to do. DJ Moore got $27.5 million on an extension. He's had four years of 1,000 yards. I'm sure everybody in San Francisco is saying to Iyuka and his representatives, you know this is the deal that's out there we think you're worth this he obviously wants to get over that 30 million range which the numbers and his time in terms
Starting point is 00:26:16 of playing haven't allowed him to get there in terms of the production as it relates to these other guys so there lies the rub you know know, and I think the New England situation was, for me, confusing because I'm from the school, and I think teams have made this mistake, including the Raiders. When you're really a young team, you know, the last thing you want to do is put a lot of assets into a high-priced receiver because, as Bill Walsh would say, we can't get up the ball. He's only going to cause
Starting point is 00:26:45 problems from within the last position you handle on your team is the wide receiver that's a Walsh quote not a Michael Lombardi quote so I think to me the Patriots not getting involved is kind of probably the right thing to do why would they give up a second round pick which could be the 33rd pick overall the draft amen when you you need way too much so you know i think the tie up is are you agreeing to a deal i think the 49ers threw their hands up because they didn't want to trade them but to get them signed it's hard and at some point you just say help the guys being unreasonable eyes on i don't want to point out something uh but i feel like i have to i think we're all kind of on the same page that the niners had 100 control of this situation i
Starting point is 00:27:32 lost it you dare can you still hear me yeah i apologize i definitely think they lost it but lomba i think you can hear me? Yeah. Jeez Louise! We don't have service everywhere in the United States! I hear him. We got you, Pat. Great to hear you. Great to hear you guys.
Starting point is 00:27:58 Anyways, Lombo, it felt like the Niners had Aiyuk for three more years because he got two franchise tags after this year and they had all the cards. Then we saw in hard knocks with the Giants where we saw Joe Shane bring up, do we want to deal with Saquon Barkley and the public backlash of another situation like that? And we saw Jonathan Taylor last year with the Indianapolis Colts. Is this like another example of like, I don't want to say like superstars can basically dictate
Starting point is 00:28:22 what the hell they want to happen, but kind of? Is that starting to become the thing? And how many of these types of people you think are out there that are able to kind of dictate what happens with them from within if they're in a contract and they're not happy well i mean if i you can dictate it anybody can i it's not sitting there at the superstar level he's not randy moss i mean he's not jj jefferson i mean come on let's be clear he's a really good player but this is a lot about the clubs. Let's be very clear here. The collective bargaining agreement negotiated by the players union
Starting point is 00:28:50 and the owners said that if you hold out, you're going to get fined. Hassan Riddick, he's over a million dollars fine now. Why he's holding out, only God knows. The total just keeps coming up, and they can't forfeit it. But when you let a guy sit in, when you let a guy sit in and come into your building and not practice or not play or not participate and get away with the fighting, you lose all your leverage. The owners negotiated to make sure there were no holdouts. And these agents have done a wonderful job of this sit in. Well, okay, I come in, I pass
Starting point is 00:29:22 my physical. Oh, I don't feel good. I got a bad back. Jalen Ramsey, this is what happened. Do you realize how many people the Jaguars sent him, the back specialist, because he had a bad back? Well, he was sitting in and eventually he got his way. This is becoming, and somebody at some point has to stand up and say, you know what? I've had enough. Brendan, you either play football or not. If you don't want to go to practice, if you think you're hurt, okay, fine. Sit off to the side. But the more you give in, it makes everybody else say, okay, let me do that. Let me try to do that.
Starting point is 00:29:53 It would be like Hassan Riddick not finding them. They say they're not going to find CeeDee Lamb. He's holding out. Why? Why? The rules allow you to do it. Are you afraid you're going to get ripped in the media? If that's your problem, I mean, we all get ripped in the media every single day.
Starting point is 00:30:08 So I think you're just giving it back. I don't understand it. I mean, look, here's the reality. We're not a casino running NFL teams. We're not just hoping you have meals we want to comp you for room, food, and beverage and hope you play the slots. We're here to build a football team. And either you take that on or you don't.
Starting point is 00:30:27 D-Bud's got something, Lambeau. Yeah, Lambeau. Speaking of building football teams, a lot of guys who are at camp, we showed up, we've been seeing a lot of scuffles, a lot of fights with joint practices, obviously players. You've been around the game a long time. You've seen it a while. Memo was sent out, I believe, by the NFL last month to the teams
Starting point is 00:30:43 about potentially fining them, and now they have fined both organizations 200 grand. What's your thoughts on these fines going out to the Giants and Lions? I mean, I think the only way you get people's attention is through coin. You've got to fine people. Look, this is ridiculous. You can't have
Starting point is 00:30:58 fights. You're not getting anywhere. I mean, do you realize how either one of those players could have got injured? I mean, you're throwing punches at guys with helmets on. How ridiculous is that? You can break a hand in an instant. I think it's probably the right thing to do. We don't want to see the fights.
Starting point is 00:31:13 We want to work on being a professional. Being a professional is, look, we know football is a violent sport. We know there's a lot of hostility that goes in there. But part of understanding this is having poise. Part of understanding in the heat of battle, you have to control yourself. You can't have a penalty at the most critical time. And when you do stuff like this, this just lends itself to having a dumb penalty. You know, it's like, it's like Parcells used to say, we're too dumb to be any good. But we do stuff like
Starting point is 00:31:40 that. That's not worth it. And I think the league's right to find people. I really do. like that that's not worth it and i think the league's right to find people i really do bombo my biggest issue with that and i appreciate the fact the nfl is trying to get ahead of it because we've seen this over the past few years with the evolution of how many joint practices are taking place around the nfl seems like everybody's doing it now where back in the day there was only a couple teams that were doing it but we all know that are on this call like these coaches love this in some positions like some guys are questioning whether or not they're tough or whatever like will this guy be able to handle being in the nfl is he a dog that's the type of guy i want so whenever there's an opportunity for another team to potentially have a fight happen players
Starting point is 00:32:16 are going to take that opportunity i think every once in a while especially at the bottom half of the roster i understand composure and everything that's a real game these are practice situations everybody kind of understands it i don't know how you fix it i i know like the the finding of the roster. I understand composure and everything. That's a real game. These are practice situations. Everybody kind of understands it. I don't know how you fix it. I know the finding of the teams is certainly the start here for the NFL, but it's a tough sell, I think, for some guys, especially in the dog days of
Starting point is 00:32:35 training camp. I think it's going to be tough because the own teams fight each other. I think it's going to be tough, Lambeau. And I understand we're trying to make it so we can evaluate and everything. Yeah. Like that, that's uncalled for that cheap shots uncalled for. You got to have voice. And to me, you know, once a player does that, get them off the field, just send them off the field.
Starting point is 00:32:58 If you're going to act like this and act, react like that and push somebody like that, that's a 15 yard penalty. You know, you're a 15-yard penalty. You know, you're going to cost your team. You can't be that way. Look, you're either coaching it or allowing it to happen. I get what you're saying. People are going to be volatile.
Starting point is 00:33:14 People are going to be emotional. Young players want to show they're tough enough. But show you're tough enough between the whistle. In theory, that sounds good, I think. That's what I'm saying. We're all agreeing that in theory that sounds good I don't know how actionable it is though How come is that Right there look both guys are
Starting point is 00:33:32 Stupid They better tell him It better be open If you are going to fight Palm strike him Lambeau If you are going to fight Don't be throwing those closed fist punches To that hard helmet.
Starting point is 00:33:45 But I guess the guardian cat may help with that. Who knows? But do you think it Lambo? It's just the, the fact that we just kept these fights kept happening. We just, all of a sudden you, you,
Starting point is 00:33:53 you turn, you open your phone up. Boom. Here's another fight. Oh, it's the same day. Oh, the next day they keep fighting.
Starting point is 00:33:58 Is that why the 200 K came down? I would imagine other teams. Yeah. One little scuffle. They're not finding them 200 K. Well, I think the league basically said, since you guys can't handle it, I have to. It's kind of like, you know, you guys aren't going to handle it, we'll handle it. And I think that's what the
Starting point is 00:34:13 league did. And so now that $200K, I mean, look, you know, that might seem like not a lot of money to a billion-dollar industry, but I'm sure it does affect them. And it comes down on the head coaches. Like, I think to me, it's their job to ensure that this doesn't happen and i know that it's it's not they're they've coaching it they're they're asking their teams not to do it but there's got to be a way to get around it i mean you've got to have discipline and you got to have self-control two of the biggest requirements to be a good team i agree agree completely. And I appreciate that the NFL is looking out because I think a part of it is like player safety as well because to all of our points,
Starting point is 00:34:50 like somebody breaks a hand there, what do we even, you just cost yourself an opportunity at like potential life-changing career. But then I just think there should be a, there's going to have to be a conversation amongst the entire league and practices about it because I think there should be a, there's going to have to be a conversation amongst the entire league and practices about it,
Starting point is 00:35:06 because I think that is just a recipe for a fight at some point, every one of those joint practices, but this younger generation is much more well-rounded and not as archaic, I guess, as the teams that I was part of, you know, which hopefully is the case. Hopefully,
Starting point is 00:35:20 hopefully. Probably Lambeau. Hey, Ty Schmidt has a great question about some, something's going on in Philly. I know you're dialed in everything Philly, but Ty has a question for you. Probably, Lambeau. Hey, Ty Schmidt has a great question about something that's going on in Philly. I know you're dialed in everything Philly, but Ty has a question for you. Yeah, Lambeau, there was an ESPN article basically talking about the fractured relationship between Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts, and a lot of the sources were unnamed,
Starting point is 00:35:38 so you kind of have to take it with a grain of salt. But the juxtapose of it was that Sirianni basically was saying, hey, things aren't broke, so why would we try to fix them, while Jalen and Brian Johnson kind of wanted to take the offense to the next step, let Jalen Hurts have a little bit more control and kind of call things on his own. And it kind of sounds like, hey, these guys, they may respect each other, they may not, but at the end of the day, they're not really fans of each other. Let's leave it that way.
Starting point is 00:36:10 How big of a deal do you think this is going into this season? And will bringing someone like Kellen Moore in kind of keep this at bay? Or are they kind of screwed once this kind of stuff starts leaking out this early in the preseason? I thought it was interesting, Hurt's comment. He didn't really deny it. He kind of let it go and earlier this summer uh before during the junk during june minicamps they asked him what the offense was and he said it was 95 kellen moores so it's a little bit like he he doesn't seem like he's fully engaged in it i've watched some of the practice clips because i live here in philly he
Starting point is 00:36:42 looks really good he looks like he's moving way better than he did last year in terms of having more bursts and acceleration. I mean, let's face it, last year, you know, A.J. Brown went down. He was averaging 17 yards a catch. Two years ago, he went down to 13. Same thing with Jalen Smith. His yards per attempt went down. They weren't making the big plays. I think one of the key things to the article was, I think Jalen Hurts was really concerned about how people were defending him. And this is why we can't judge quarterbacks too early in their careers. Because what happens is defensive coordinators start to figure out how to play the quarterback. And I think what Jalen Hurts was seeing was he was getting a lot of pressure coming off the defensive left side, his right, forcing him to the left and trying to get him to
Starting point is 00:37:31 make a play on the move. And I think that created problems. Remember what Nick Bosa said after they played him. His eye level was down and he was looking at the rush. People schemed for that. And I think his call to Don Martindale to say what was going on why is this happening to me why am I getting pushed that way I think was really telling that the kids saw that he needed to find a way to improve but that's what's going to be the key here for the Eagles is can they come down the field make throws Kellen Moore takes over look what two years ago they had a great offense running the football you know they scored 204 points in the second quarter. They played from the front on everybody.
Starting point is 00:38:08 But when you have this push-tuck thing that they have there, and you know you have four downs to get a first down, every time they throw an incomplete pass, they're doing you a favor. Lomba, what is it like? Okay, their relationship is described as professional now. Now, I don't know. We don't really know what's true, what's not. We hear things from behind the scenes.
Starting point is 00:38:27 We hear anonymous sources. If it is a professional relationship, have you seen that in the NFL to where you can be successful and win Super Bowls if the head coach and the quarterback aren't super tight and don't have a very, very good relationship? I think it could work, but I think Nick has other issues. Nick's got to control himself on the sideline. Nick has always been an emotional guy, I think. Yeah, I mean, he's got to control himself. And then last year, the bigger issue, really, when you watch this team
Starting point is 00:38:55 was their conditioning at the end of the year. Their conditioning. Now, they've changed how they practice. They've speeded up a little bit. There's a little bit harder training camp than they had last year. It's been documented. And I think last year, when you look at that defensive front, whether it's Jordan Davis or Jalen Carter, there was a lot of weight gain going on there. And I think they've made some changes within the framework of their strength and development program to help that. That falls on Nick's feet too. You've got to condition the team for the stretch run. So I think there's a lot of pressure on Nick in a lot of different areas. I think what he's got to do is win the team back that he can correct the problems of last year and not have them face this year. I'm happy Big Dom's back on the sideline and also the new strength and conditioning coach over there.
Starting point is 00:39:39 The boys should be good going into the playoff push as opposed to what happened last year whenever they kind of fell apart. Talking about strength and conditioning and weight and everything, Lamar Jackson gave an interview from training camp and said he lost weight because he thought he looked fat. I believe. I didn't hear the clip, but I saw the tweet and the caption, and Lamar Jackson said he was watching himself and he thought he looked fat, I believe. Do we have the full audio of this?
Starting point is 00:40:01 Yep. You slimmed down two years ago. I was fat to me. years ago. I was fat, to me. I felt like I was fat. I just saw a video from two years ago of the Browns, and I looked like out of shape. Yeah. But I was in shape. You watch and you run.
Starting point is 00:40:17 Did you feel slower? Did you think that you looked slower? My eyes might be deceiving me, but I believe I looked a little slower to me but not now. Why did you decide to slim down? Was it was it simply for the speed element? Just so I can move around without getting fatigued that's all. I don't know if I was getting fatigued last year probably if I get a first down but I don't like getting caught if I do this out the run so yeah that's part of it. You know, we get a little slower as we age. You don't think it has anything to do with age?
Starting point is 00:40:46 No, not at all. No, I'm only 27. I'm still young. Definitely don't have anything to do with age. He said we are not in the same we here, pal, you and me. Let's not be having that particular conversation at this point. But he's slimming down. I think Tua did the same thing.
Starting point is 00:41:02 But for the Lamar situation, he's going to be faster, and he's got Derrick Henry and Patrick Ricard behind him. This feels like really good news if I'm a Ravens fan, what I just heard from Lamar. Do you feel the same way? Yeah, I do too. But I think the bigger good news is, and we're going to see it this summer,
Starting point is 00:41:18 is how they have to change. Derrick Henry is not an offset back in the shotgun formation runner. It's too tight for him to be there. That's not how he runs the football effectively. So this is going to be more of a team that's in the pistol or Lamar is going to be under center, which is what I believe he has to be. That's when he's most effective. Bootlegs, nakeds, force him to defend. Think about this, guys. The Houston Texans had one of the worst run games in the league last year and they had one of the best passing games in the league last year why because they were play action and people still play the run even though you can't run it their numbers running the football
Starting point is 00:41:54 last year were horrible but they made so many explosive plays because of that play action I think that's the element that Baltimore has missed and And it doesn't work as well from the shotgun. With Henry now, you've got to be behind center. He's got to be a downhill back. I think this run game will help them change, allow them to get into more play action, and use this guy's skills to move around and make plays. Look, I've been a Lamar fan since he came out.
Starting point is 00:42:20 I've watched him at Louisville. My son coached there. I'm disappointed he hasn't won a playoff game, but I think he certainly has the ability to lead an offense to win a Super Bowl with. Alonbo, I believe he may have won a couple playoff games.
Starting point is 00:42:36 I mean, I'm talking about the Super Bowl, yeah. The real one. Boston Connors got something. Yeah, Alonbo, they may not understand just because they never spent time in New England. The real playoff Yes. Boston Connors got something. Yeah, Alamo, they may not understand just because they never spent time in New England. You know, the real playoff game for the Super Bowl ones. But with that being said, a coach that has won a Super Bowl, Sean Payton, we've heard a lot from him about Bo Nix.
Starting point is 00:42:55 And their depth chart just came out, and Jared Stidham is the starter. Are you a little surprised that they haven't just handed the keys over to Bo Nix, or is this kind of just standard operating procedure for Sean Payton and a rookie quarterback with Bo? I think the most influential person in Sean Payton's coaching career is Bill Parcells. I think that relationship that started when neither one knew each other when Parcells was observing Sean as the quarterback offensive coordinator of the Giants and then he hired him in Dallas, really unknown, didn't know him. And that relationship has blossomed to really a lot of the philosophy that Sean coaches with comes from Bill.
Starting point is 00:43:34 And Bill would never just give a rookie a starting quarterback job. He'd make them earn it. Now, I think Bo Nix is going to earn it. So I think putting him third is very Parcellian, if you will. Put him there, make him earn it, show people. But I think Sean's completely vested in this young player. And I think he wants him to show that he can win the job. He's not going to give it to him, but he wants him to show he can win the job.
Starting point is 00:43:55 And I think Sean's going to choreograph this so that he does win the job. Look, Nix is very good. He was the second-best quarterback in this draft in terms of when the play broke down, he made plays. You know, I think to me, Sean will do a really good job of making sure he's successful, making sure his feet are in the right place to throw the football. And then I think what Sean was saying this summer, just listening to it, is Williams, their star running back from North Carolina, who was two years ago with the ACL, is back to being the same guy he was
Starting point is 00:44:25 before the injury and that is going to help Bo Nix a lot. Pat, what do you think about Bo Nix? Do you think he has any chance? And also, are you on a plane right now? I'm in the back of a bus heading to plane and I'm going to let you know my gripe with
Starting point is 00:44:41 service has certainly continued. Lambeau's face was a distorted clown look, and it's not fair for Lombardi. And I could barely hear any of that, but I assume what he had to say was, this is standard operating procedure. We all know that Sean Payton likes him, and he's probably been very transparent with Bo Nix, too, about the expectations, where he's going to be, how it's going to go. I feel like from draft night all the way through, Sean Payton has wanted the Bo Nix too about the expectations, where he's going to be, how it's going to go. I feel like from draft night all the way through,
Starting point is 00:45:06 Sean Payton has wanted the Bo Nix relationship to work very, very, very, very much. So I think he's very much focused on it because he knows with what happened with Russell and the amount they're paying in dead cap going forward, a lot of eyes are on him and who he picks and how he chooses it. So I think he's all premeditated and figured out. He heard it all. He figured out he heard it all he did he heard it i think i think the one thing about sean that he you know sean's not afraid of confrontation and sean's not afraid to tell the player what he needs to hear and i'm sure that he told all of
Starting point is 00:45:36 them look you're gonna i'm gonna play the best player and bo nix is gonna have to prove in these preseason games that he is the best player the The challenge always is in preseason is you don't have always a lot of good offensive linemen, so the quarterbacks kind of don't look as good as they need to look because the line breaks down. But I have a feeling Bo will look good. Look, let's face it. The coverages are going to be fairly simple. No one's going to do a lot of different things,
Starting point is 00:45:59 and I think they'll script this for success. Yeah, it should be. I'm interested to watch what his preseason snaps may look like. But, Lambeau, D-Butt has a good question for you. Yeah, Lambeau, at this point in the season, there are a ton of quality free agents out there. I saw a report of Justin Simmons, I think, should be on the top of that list. He was visiting the Saints either today or yesterday.
Starting point is 00:46:20 What's your thoughts on any potential landing spots for these free agents that are out there? Well, I think this is the best time to add players, right? I mean, look, last year, you know, the Baltimore Ravens in August added Clowney. And then in September added Van Noy off the show. That was 19 and a half sacks out of both of them. I mean, you have to constantly as a general manager, you've got to constantly look at how do I improve my team? What does my team need to have to be able to? Now, a lot of these guys are going to need medicals, right? But, you know,
Starting point is 00:46:50 you're going to have to bring guys in, give them a physical, see where they are, all that stuff. But the reality of it is, is you're looking at your team and being objective and saying, what do I need to do to get this team? Who was I counting on to be a good player? You know, we're counting on this guy, but he's been hurt.-oh maybe we should call mckay micah hyde to come in and play safety i think that's a lot that's what's going on now you have to constantly evaluate your roster the problem is when you get into some of these guys you got to be damn sure they're going to make your team and they're going to improve your team and they're not at the end of their careers because once they're on the opening day roster you have no flexibility to get them off because of the way the collective
Starting point is 00:47:28 bargaining agreement is so i think it's really important you know i always kid about this all the time on my podcast is you know this is the week before the preseason games every scout in the building every gentleman oh it's going to be so hard to cut this team we can't cut it we're going to be able to trade some of these guys for six and seven-prong picks, and then when the game starts, reality sets in, right? We're not as good as we thought we are, and that's when these guys start to get jobs. Nice.
Starting point is 00:47:55 Tone Diggs, you got something for Lambeau back there I heard. Yeah, Lambeau. Tomlin said this morning in his press conference that it is definitely an open competition still for quarterback one. Fields is going to start the first preseason game. I think that's just because Wilson's still coming back. But as an organization, who do you think they want to win the job? Because like, do they want to pay a 36-year-old Russell Wilson another year? Or do they want to pay Justin Fields off of if they think it's one good year of work? Who do you think as an organization they want to win the
Starting point is 00:48:24 job? They want the guy that's not going to turn the ball over, who do you think as an organization they want to win the job? They want the guy that's not going to turn the ball over. I mean, that's the thing they want because they've won 10 games last year, lost to Arizona, lost to New England at home, and still won 10 games. They're defensive-led, and their quarterback has to add value, not take value. And I think just listening to it, you know, Russell, that was one of the things he did really well. They were seventh in the league in Denver and not turning the ball over offensively when he played quarterback for them.
Starting point is 00:48:49 That was one of the strengths. So I think, look, they're excited about Fields and his ability. And we have to temper that. I think that one of the things that hurt Justin Fields more than anything is expectation. You know, expectation that he's going to be the MVP of the league. Expectation he's taking the next step. Look, he's got to play within the framework of Arthur Smith's offense, use his feet, get out of the pocket, make plays,
Starting point is 00:49:11 and then not turn this ball over, not make mistakes, not fumble like he did in Chicago. And I think if he does that, they will. One thing about Pittsburgh that I think you know being a fan more than ever, they're going to play the best player. There's no hidden agenda with Mike Tomlin. ever. They're going to play the best player. There's no hidden agenda with Mike Tomlin. Mike Tomlin's going to play the best player. And if Fields is the best player, he's going to play
Starting point is 00:49:30 and Russell's going to have to watch. Yeah, Lambeau, it's going to be exciting to watch. I mean, yeah, I don't know what's going to happen. With Russell continuing this calf injury, he's not full go. The more time you give Fields, it feels like here we go. He's building some momentum. If he can run through the preseason like that, it'll be interesting to see how everything plays out.
Starting point is 00:49:48 But, Lambeau, thank you. Well, remember last year? I mean, remember last year? I mean, Burrow's calf. I mean, the first part of the season, even though he got hurt, his calf bothered him all the way through. It wasn't until about the Arizona game that he actually started throwing the ball more effectively.
Starting point is 00:50:02 These calf injuries are really problematic for guys as they get older and they have to come back especially a quarterback who's going to use his lower body yeah what do you think he said he heard it pushing a sled was he at pittsburgh working too hard working too hard cares too much you're right it's tough it's a tough situation lambo, sweet background on your computer screen. So sick. Yeah, I got my man always looking over me. I got to make sure he's always looking over me. Two weeks from tomorrow, man, I'm going to be right there in Philly. Hopefully I can get a backstage pass to kiss the ring, but I'm trying.
Starting point is 00:50:36 I haven't worked that out yet. Okay. He needs to pull you up on stage. He needs to pull it for me. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Remix. Oh, no. We a remix going with Pat.
Starting point is 00:50:46 Hey, Lambo, thank you so much, though. Really appreciate your time, always. Ladies and gentlemen, Michael Lombardi. Did Pat's connection clear up at all, you think? Pat, your connection. Can you hear us? Yeah, he's doing what he can. There you go.
Starting point is 00:51:02 Yeah, I can hear you. Can you hear me? Yeah, there it is. We got you now better than it was We had the robot thing Boys, we're on the road To success Up here in Connecticut And having Michael Lombardi on to give us all the gospel is good news
Starting point is 00:51:17 I think the biggest takeaway In that Pittsburgh situation is Like they will play whoever's the best player Like Mike Tomlin will do that and also mike tomlin will tell us nothing the entire time i think that's the biggest conversation everybody's trying to read everything that tomlin says it's like tomlin's like the iuk stuff he's getting asked about hey do you want to add a receiver anything like that and they're reading his facial expressions it's like tomlin's a recruiter. Tomlin's beloved. Tomlin's a smart coach.
Starting point is 00:51:45 It's like, this guy is playing chess at all times. And it's like, so I have no clue how it's going to work out in Pittsburgh. But IU can just infuse. Oh, here we go. We might have lost him right there. And speaking of that, Pat, if you do pop back on, Pat, there's a clip. I don't know if Foxy has this thing potted up or not, but I don't know. What's it called? Tone, what's the
Starting point is 00:52:07 bar called? Where the coach is hanging? Dino's. I think they're at Dino's. Dino's outside of Latrobe. You see there's what? Brett Michaels, Jay Glazer, Mike Tomlin all in one spot. 200 people. Who do you think the line is for? Look at this. Look at Dino's, Pat.
Starting point is 00:52:24 My God. Yeah, I'll tell you what. I ain't never been to Dino's, but last night would have been a night to be here. There it at Dino's, Pat. My God. I ain't never been to Dino's, but last night would have been a night to be here. There it is. What is it? A wing spot? Looks like there's some good wings. Yeah, I don't think anybody on this particular call has ever been to Dino's, but I will say you get a chance to meet
Starting point is 00:52:40 Pratt Michaels and Jay Glazer, you think it's a dream come true. And then Mike Tomlin just housing a beer in the corner. What a day. What a time. Yeah. Dean knows his spot. I would assume Tomlin probably goes here every single camp.
Starting point is 00:52:53 Uh-oh. Oh, you got us, Pat? Yeah, I can hear you. It's pretty impressive. Connecticut football. Someone is throttling you. We've heard some sounds come out of that phone that we've never heard before. Whenever you hear that electric...
Starting point is 00:53:11 Yeah, the boing. What do they call those electric... EMPs. What exact... Can you explain those? What an EMP is? It just shutdowns all the electric capabilities in the area. It's kind of scary to think of.
Starting point is 00:53:25 It's an energy weapon. Are they using them already? Oh, yeah. People claim that. But are we saying, do people claim that they use them? Are they saying, hey, this was used obviously, but they won't admit it? Well, they use them in war. I mean, I would hope they don't use them in to shut down like all their, so, hey, you can't use your drones or you can't communicate because we're
Starting point is 00:53:41 going to shut it off. I would hope they're not just sending one up in Connecticut right now, so Pat can't talk on the show, but I get off. I would hope they're not just sending one up in Connecticut right now so Pat can't talk on the show. You have no idea. You have no idea. It's certainly possible. We should be paranoid like that because we know NFL coaches and college coaches are that paranoid. Oh yeah. I remember
Starting point is 00:53:57 being different places. You'd see if you're outside. We used to practice in bowl practice or if you're off site in the NFL practicing somewhere else, you got dudes like head coach telling the security guy, get some binoculars out there. I see there's some balconies two miles away where someone might be filming us. I wonder if anyone's ever gotten any good, like, say a random fan.
Starting point is 00:54:18 I don't know, Connor. Season team practice. I mean, Connor, you know about this, right? For the record, no, I do not. But it just happened at Panthers practice. There's some guy just flying a drone. Beautiful drone footage, by the way. Yeah, great drone, high quality. He was just flying it over.
Starting point is 00:54:30 I think it was their stadium, and he was just filming all of the offense, just getting it working. So it definitely does happen, but EMPs take out everything. It's not specific to one phone. I got to get that little chip or whatever so my phone's protected. You stick it on the back of the phone. I don't know. I don't think those help with EMPs.
Starting point is 00:54:49 Yeah, get yourself a generator that's EMP protected. You get them all. Yeah. Sat phone. Bill's got his whole house prepared for it. Oh, good job, Bill. Hey, let's see. I think Pat got his connection back.
Starting point is 00:54:58 They stopped throttling him. Oh, yeah. Boys. There you go. Boys. We're in the middle of it. We're in the middle of it right now. We're in the middle of it right're in the middle of it right now
Starting point is 00:55:05 I could hear half a Lombardi I don't know how people do our show On this side of it It is gosh I remember like Jordan Poyter Riding in the van with his family It was doing a similar thing It is weird when your phone decides to work
Starting point is 00:55:22 And when it doesn't want to work It's a small Connecticut small state It is weird when your phone decides to work and when it doesn't want to work. It's a small Connecticut small state. Yeah. Not as small as Rhode Island, obviously. Correct. Small state, though. I just assumed up here everything would be good, you know, hunk of dory,
Starting point is 00:55:43 because how small everything is, we can get service everywhere. But I guess I'm hitting the back roads here of Connecticut. i'll tell you what the well it's been raining up here it's been a little chilly up here the last couple days it's been really nice it's been a nice break from like the 97 degrees that it's been yeah so i didn't expect it to be like chilly and rainy but connecticut has certainly been a nice place went to hartford last night or west hartford last night at dinner beautiful beautiful time good food had an oyster for the first time yeah how was it uh it's just like mashed potatoes it tastes like whatever you put on top of it correct bingo was it the raw one that you like yeah yeah it's Yeah It's just a weird texture you gotta get over Texture and I didn't Completely Suck it in public and that thing wasn't coming out
Starting point is 00:56:34 He did not dislodge it I believe you said he did not dislodge it fully With the knife or whatever so it was kind of hanging on by a thread Perfect timing after throttling your system As we're up against the hard-op. But Hour 2 is going to come up on the other side, boys. You guys excited? So pumped, man. D-Bud's excited.
Starting point is 00:56:51 We'll get back to the tone back at Hammer Downtown Studios. It's going to be awesome. So make sure everyone sticks around. Hour 2 coming up next. Bam. Here we go. So Pat was getting throttled a little bit on his service when he was driving to the airport coming back from Connecticut.
Starting point is 00:57:10 He'll be back in his seat tomorrow. I was here yesterday. I'll be here today, obviously, for the first hour. I'll be here for the second hour moving forward after that. Really? I will be here. I don't think I'm going to leave before this hour is up. But, boys, it's time to get back. We need to figure out what's going on in America. What's going on in the USA?
Starting point is 00:57:27 What are we doing? How is the Olympics? What's the medal count look like? Let's go back to the hammer. Todd! Todd! Studios. Tone Diggs.
Starting point is 00:57:35 We almost nailed it there. Tone Diggs, what's the medal count look like? Any updates on what's happening? And are we just running away with this? Yeah, we have 24 golds, which is one ahead of China, who has 23. But I believe we have 88 total medals now. So one more just happened on that graph. So, I mean, we're dominating the total.
Starting point is 00:57:53 What did you say? It was a volleyball? Oh, my God. I just looked it up. Volleyball lost the poll in 3-2. We lost. We were just watching it. We were up, what, 2-1 in the fourth game.
Starting point is 00:58:03 We were up 11-4. I don't know how they lost. Damn. I don't know how they lost. Damn. I don't know how they lost. Damn. Is there any chance, though, that we don't have the most golds? Right now, we're one ahead of China. Does China look like they're going to continue to get some golds?
Starting point is 00:58:15 I was watching last night, and they still have diving. There's still some diving events. How are we doing on that? China's very good. I believe they won seven of eight golds in diving in 2020, and I think there's a few left, so I think they are going to get a few more. But we've got basketball covered.
Starting point is 00:58:31 We've still got a lot more track and field. We've still got wrestling, which we are dominant in. We are going to win the total and the gold. There's no doubt. When do the Olympics officially end? Sunday. There's not like a closing ceremony. There is. There is a closing ceremony. AJ, what is the issue?
Starting point is 00:58:46 They pass the flame on to TC. Oh, you're bringing TC. He's flying the flame from France, right? No, he's running and then swimming and then running again. With the flame above the water. I believe he's also base jumping with the flame and landing on the Hollywood sign. And then he's going to light it. Where's the torch?
Starting point is 00:59:03 That's for sure. Where do you light? Hold on. That's for sure. That's actually happening. He's going to land on the Hollywood sign. Bingo. Is this real? Yes.
Starting point is 00:59:08 This is actually. Not kidding. Usually we're screwing with you. This is real. I mean, anything you tell me that TC would do, I believe. Bingo. Really? It's Tom Cruise.
Starting point is 00:59:16 Tom Cruise. Yeah. I mean, the opportunities are endless. He already base jumped from the top of the Eiffel Tower to start it. I believe that. I did not. There's no chance he did that. I think I would have seen that.
Starting point is 00:59:26 They said there's two stunts. One of them is in Paris, which he's already completed, and the other one is the – Oh, so they filmed it? They have this recorded? We're going to watch him jumping off the Eiffel Tower? There is footage of him standing on top of the Hollywood sign, so some are speculating that he has already completed both stunts.
Starting point is 00:59:44 I mean, TC isn't just like, okay, I'll go try this once. He is a perfectionist, so he's going to make sure I need to land in the direct center of the Hollywood sign. He's probably done this stunt 40 to 50 times already. So he's landing by the Hollywood sign.
Starting point is 00:59:59 On top of it. How much space, how wide are those letters? They're huge. Have you seen the Hollywood sign? There's no way they're 40 feet deep. Yeah, but he just watched the balance beam and he's like Oh, I don't know. Does that look like a guy who's getting ready? Does that look like a guy who's maybe done it already?
Starting point is 01:00:16 Yeah, there's no harness, AJ. He needs to climb. What are we doing? This is like we're shooting drone footage and you got a boom mic. They're doing everything. I mean, this is how it ends, actually. But I think the last event is the men's gold medal basketball match. Sweet. I believe.
Starting point is 01:00:30 So, L.A., 2028 Olympics are coming to Los Angeles. That's right. When was the last time they were there? 92. Yeah, was it 92? That was Atlanta. Sorry. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:00:39 Probably the 90s. When was Salt Lake? I mean, do you mean in California? Well, 96 was Atlanta. 96 was Atlanta. And then Salt Lake City. But L.A. was back. I know 96? 96 was Atlanta. 96 was Atlanta. And then Salt Lake City was. But L.A. was back in the day. I know we had one in L.A.
Starting point is 01:00:47 I remember seeing the whole torch lighting situation there. So it's going to be awesome to have the Olympics here in America. Yeah, that's right. I think we talked about it yesterday or maybe Monday about how Ledecky and Simone Biles, this might not be it for them just because it is in America. Yeah, so what all venues? Are we going to be building a bunch of new venues? Are we using, like, obviously SoFi for a while?
Starting point is 01:01:04 The pool's going to be SoFi. That was already confirmed. I'm sure they're going to have to build a few. I would assume track and field will be at the Coliseum. But as Ty would say, they're going to have to get rid of some stuff. Nick says 1984. There's Los Angeles.
Starting point is 01:01:20 Okay, there you go. That makes sense. But they'll probably use the new Clippers Arena. The new Staples Center, Crypto Center, whatever. The 400 acres they clear out of tents. I mean, there you go. That makes sense. But they'll probably use the new Clippers Arena, the new Staples Center, Crypto Center, whatever. The 400 acres they clear out of tents. There's a billion venues they could use in L.A. Or just within a 50, 80-mile radius, probably. Yeah, I mean, they could probably. What Wendy said, like a two-hour drive.
Starting point is 01:01:38 I don't know how far Vegas is, but I assume that's probably. I think it's a three-hour drive. Yeah, that's probably. We'll do some stuff in Vegas. Surfing will probably be in San Diego because there's some pretty Narswells out there. Is there some Narswells out there? Is that the best Narswells are in Diego? That's what
Starting point is 01:01:52 they say. I wonder where the golf will be. The arena's probably Crypto, right? That looks like Crypto. The basin recreation area, what does that mean? That's probably where the golf... Or is that where the village, Olympic Village? Ooh, maybe. Could be be golf. I would imagine we'll be at LA country. We need to get some questions
Starting point is 01:02:08 about Olympic village so you can opt out of Olympic village. I think they're doing this. I think they're doing the triathlon at the LA River because they want to copy Paris the LA River doesn't even really have water. I don't think well they want it to be like they wanted to have like needles and stuff like that in it. So don't give us a version. That'll
Starting point is 01:02:24 be what we swim around. I thought they were going to fill up those like uh those massive concrete areas that's like that's the other river oh really yeah yeah so i carry the water right you talk about like aqua ducks yeah like gone in 60 seconds when he's running away yeah nick cage we know oh yeah that's i mean i've heard of all the hoity-toity or the Hollywood people talk about it. Yeah, you've gone there a bunch. I never have. I would try it. So, I mean, there's so many different sports.
Starting point is 01:02:51 They're going to be all over the state. They're going to be all over. There'll be a NorCal doing some sweet stuff probably. Probably, yeah. Do we have like mountain biking? Sure. I don't know. I mean, like we said.
Starting point is 01:03:00 I'm not sure about any of this. That's why I'm asking you guys. The surfing is so far away. I don't think they're worried about about where the events are going to be. There's plenty of space. Yeah, no one cares. No one truly cares. What if they did, honestly, what if they did the surfing in Hawaii?
Starting point is 01:03:13 Wherever the most gnar swells are. Banga. Well said. Is that Malibu? The boo has good swells. It depends on the time of year, right? We need those big storms. You got to chase the storms storms. 100-year storm.
Starting point is 01:03:26 Yeah. Is this the one with flag football being the first time? Yeah. So who's gonna be on? Are they gonna make some dumb rules to where the only people that are players are people we've never heard of? I mean, I would assume so because if they let NFL guys play in it, like, why even do it?
Starting point is 01:03:41 We'll beat everybody by 150. It'll be like three-on-three basketball. Same setup, I assume. You gotta get points throughout. But we will know who's playing. We will definitely know the players. There'll be guys that played in college or guys that were in the league. Hopefully. Or they're gonna make some weird certification thing where you gotta get to 15
Starting point is 01:03:58 different qualifiers. Maybe they pull it from that under-20 team we had that just got their asses beat at D-Bones. No, they won't do that. Isn't the NFL very involved in the flag football process, though? So if the NFL's involved, I would assume they could be like,
Starting point is 01:04:13 no, our guys are going to go play. Maddie Mahomes is QB. And for those guys, you get to miss two weeks of training camp. And win gold medal. I tell you what, that's better than the lockout year. You do that, that'd better than the lockout year. You do that.
Starting point is 01:04:26 That'd be pretty awesome. What about Snoop going to be back? I'm reading some stuff that Snoop is getting paid for this. Yeah. I assume. He should. He absolutely should. He is the greatest ambassador to the U.S.
Starting point is 01:04:37 and to, he's promoting the Olympics better than anybody, don't you think? Yeah, by then I think probably everyone who's associated with L.A. I bet Dr. Dre will be a huge staple in the- Snoop will be back for sure. Yeah. He's a huge hit in France for America. He's going to be a gigantic hit in LA. TC needs to be in the men's all-around. Gymnastics.
Starting point is 01:04:52 He'll be like 65 then? 64? They usually top out at 19. He ages the other way, though. His number age will be that. Is he drinking something? No, I don't think so. Ice cold Diet Mountain Dew.
Starting point is 01:05:06 Is that what it's called? TC likes Diet Mountain Dew? If I had to guess, yeah. TC doesn't put chemicals in his body. You know that. That's a good point. There's no chemicals in Diet Dew. Just God's nectar.
Starting point is 01:05:17 I don't know about that. Either way, good thing we're winning the medal count, right? Yes. We're winning in gold. We always win the medal count, though, right? Yeah. That's kind of the way it works. We're winning the medal. We're winning in gold. We always win the medal count, though, right? Yeah. Yeah. That's kind of the way it works.
Starting point is 01:05:27 That's why gold is what we're looking at. The world's getting a little closer. I feel like those margins are getting closer, getting better. Basketball's getting better and better. Getting better, getting more competitive. I'm hoping for a USA-France matchup. That'd be sweet. You know, obviously us against Wimby.
Starting point is 01:05:40 I'm sure that was, you know, great for the script going into the NBA season. So it'll be fun. It'll be exciting. Someone was telling me they want real American football, 11-on-11 tackle football, to try to get to the Olympics. That'd be sick. The rest of the world doesn't play football. Yeah, that's tough.
Starting point is 01:05:55 That's the thing. They do. They just stink. No, they don't even really play. They play on military bases for Americans living over there. I don't think many places actually play full-go American football. Even places, there's small states and people. I know Chad Greenway grew up playing like seven-on-seven high school football.
Starting point is 01:06:10 Like it wasn't eight-man, 11-on-11 or whatever. Oh, yeah, there's eight-man football in like Iowa and North Dakota. High schools don't have full-go 11-on-11. They play with the Nerf football. I think that's blasphemy right there. It is. That's what we used to say. But, no, the field, I think, is only 80 yards
Starting point is 01:06:26 and it's much different. Just because they probably don't have enough. Yeah, exactly. Leighton Van Der Esch, the middle linebacker who just had to retire. He played 7-on-7 football in high school. Did Brian Leaf even have 11-on-11 football in high school? I know he said he was the only guy
Starting point is 01:06:40 ever to come out of where he was from. Just thinking of people who were great players who came out of places that might not. Just thinking of people who, like great players, who came out of places that might not even have played full go tackle football. I would guess quarterbacks would be the one where it's like, hey, this is the easiest transition, at least, when it comes to that style of football. But it's like Greenway 1,000% played quarterback. Like they just put their best athlete at quarterback.
Starting point is 01:07:01 It's like, hey, you're going to run the ball 85 times today. Greenway's got a daughter, too, who's a stud basketball player. Already been offered by a bunch of people. Yeah, she's probably going to go to Iowa. Is she? There's a good chance. Yeah, and following her dad's shoes, who was a Hawkeye legend. Show a little respect.
Starting point is 01:07:16 Son of a bitch. Only respect for him and Abdul Hod. You kidding me? Abdul got drafted to Green Bay the same year. Yeah. We're all the same age, man. I even met Greenway in college. That dude was awesome. He always
Starting point is 01:07:25 was awesome. Always a mature adult, too, around us. Fun dude and then unbelievable football player. Abdul Hodge, absolute hammer. He still coaches for the Packers. Who? No, he's back at Iowa. He did for a little bit. Abdul? Yeah. He's coaching in Iowa. Tight ends coach.
Starting point is 01:07:41 Okay, nice. Abdul's the man. Now, who was the OC for Iowa this year? Tim Lester, one of the best in the biz. So, Coach's son. He's gone. ends coach in Iowa. Tight ends coach. Okay, nice. Abdul's the man. Now, who was the OC for Iowa this year? Tim Lester, one of the best in the biz. So, Coach's son. He's gone. He moved on. Starting his own program. He's starting a full college, a university.
Starting point is 01:07:53 Yep. In Iowa City. Like a charter school? Maybe. What's it called then, Connor? Tell me. I think it's the South Harmon Institute of Technology of Iowa. Pretty good movie that was, by the way.
Starting point is 01:08:03 Yeah, one of the best. Yeah. What do you guys think of Lambeau? Honestly. Lambeau have any hot takes today? Like anything that makes you, like say you're walking by, you have to stop and look at the screen and yell and say, that's not true.
Starting point is 01:08:14 I mean, I don't know about hot takes. I thought the Eagles, like Sirianni hurt situation is definitely something that you've got to keep an eye on. Yeah, what's happening? Like there's never, we never know. I don't like when it's anonymous sources talking. Of course. And there's a couple different in that story that got put out.
Starting point is 01:08:28 Like, D-Bo, what do you think? I don't like giving it money, like legs. Yeah. But usually, like we always do, dumb saying, where there's smoke, there's fire. Like, something's up. Everything's not 100%. Hey, we're cool.
Starting point is 01:08:38 Everything's great. Like, there's something going on. It may not be as bad as they make it sound. Yeah, and we saw it. You know, you don't start a season 10-1 and then just completely fall off a cliff without something going on behind the scenes. And the year before, when you lose two coordinators,
Starting point is 01:08:50 you know, you lose Shane Stuyck and you lose John Gannon, who are going to be head coaches. So, obviously, they're great coaches. You know, you've got to replace those guys. And, obviously, Philly had a big problem doing that last year, went through a couple different DCs, threw Matty P in there at one point. Brian Johnson, Jalen Hurts sounds like they never got on the same page.
Starting point is 01:09:07 And you don't really know unless you're getting, you know, the all-access like we're getting with, you know, hard knocks. You know, we talked about, you know, hard knocks a little bit. I didn't watch it, the full episode last night. Zito kind of dived in a little bit. But you don't really know until you know, and we don't know anything right now. So hopefully they show up.
Starting point is 01:09:22 You got Saquon on offense. That's a big piece. You got Devin White at middlebacker. That's a big piece as well, who kind of flew under the radar as a signing, who's looking to kind of reprove himself in the league. CJ, DJ. CJ, DJ. You got pieces.
Starting point is 01:09:36 So, you know, you hope Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis take the next step up front. You got to replace Jason Kelsey, Fletcher Cox, and those guys. So I'm interested to see. I still think they win that division with what's going on with the other teams. I don't know what Lambeau actually called it. He called the tush push something else when we were on. I don't know if you guys even noticed. I forget what he called it. I do not remember what it
Starting point is 01:09:56 did. I wonder how they're going to do without Jason Kelsey. Now, who's the new center? The young guy that he helped him. Landon Dickerson, right? They moved him over. They're still going to run it as much. We just don't know until they get there. Cam Juergens is the guy that takes Dickerson. Still got Lane Johnson out there. Still got Milata. Kellen Moore
Starting point is 01:10:11 will dial it up for sure, too. Kellen Moore, we're going to have some shots. We're going to try to score some points. They just have so many weapons. They had Saquon, too. Throw the ball to him out of the backfield, too. I'd run wheel routes. I'd try to get him on matchups all day long. That is one of the things it said in the article, though,
Starting point is 01:10:29 is last year, to Lambeau's point with A.J. Brown, his yards per catch going down, they were way more vertical. They were just taking shots, taking shots, taking shots, as opposed to getting A.J. Brown in space in the middle of the field and then letting him run after the catch, which he was so good at in Tennessee. But it's weird.
Starting point is 01:10:47 That article made it seem, too, like maybe this is – I mean, I'm sure Philly kills him, and they especially did last year when they went on that slide. But they're saying this is a prove-it year for Sirianni and that he is undoubtedly coaching for his job. And I don't know if that's because maybe a guy like Belichick's out there. We know in Philly how quick it goes, though. But they're two years removed from a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:11:07 Doug Peterson won the Super Bowl and comes out, and he's got a statue of him and Nick Foles, and then he's gone two, three years later. There was questions about Sirianni, though, last year. I remember we talked about it on the show. There was people who thought he might lose his job this offseason. Not the first 10 weeks. Not the first 10 weeks.
Starting point is 01:11:23 That's what I'm saying. That's how quickly you can go from bad to good, good to bad. Sirianni knows, hey, I got to get to a hot start. There's going to be a lot of heat on me, huh? Well, and if that's the conversation, too, it's not as if it's about how new offense, Jalen Hurts and Kellen Moore trying to mesh together. The fact that the conversation is can they bridge the gap
Starting point is 01:11:42 between head coach and franchise QB? That's kind of shocking. When head coach isn't even calling the plays, too, so you don't have to have that much interaction. And when Sirianni has been very loud behind the fact, like, hey, Jalen's our quarterback, Jalen's our quarterback. I didn't know that it was to this extent, and granted it might not be just because it is an anonymous source article, and we know in the past those have been completely fabricated but if there's even a little inkling of there being some disagreement
Starting point is 01:12:10 like sure at the end of the season if it doesn't go well especially with what you said like all the other teams in the division don't look like they're on the right path and the eagles are the one team with the most you know players coming And sure, they lost some big players, but their playmakers are there on offense. They got a lot of good guys back on defense with CJ, GJ, and Devin White to D-Butt's point. If it doesn't work out and they go 10-7 and lose in the first round again to a team like the Bucs or any team, really,
Starting point is 01:12:39 and you have the option of a Belichick to Ty's point or a Vrabel or some of these other guys. One of these college guys that wants to make the jump. Yeah, say Ryan Day. There's going to be some big college coaches, don't you think, that make the jump over the next couple years? I mean, if Ohio State doesn't win the whole thing and Ryan Day is getting
Starting point is 01:12:55 murdered, because he will if they don't win the national championship, which is such an impossible thing to do in the first place, but he's already going into the season like this is the greatest roster ever assembled for college football. Could you not see Ryan Day being like, all right, I'm done with this. I can go and get a job like Philadelphia where they paid all their guys already.
Starting point is 01:13:17 You're going there with two stud wide receivers locked in contract, a quarterback locked in contract, a running back locked in contract. It's definitely a job people are going to want. No question. For sure. Any college coach. I think any coach would be crazy if they knew, hey, I have legit head coaching opportunities in the NFL,
Starting point is 01:13:33 even if you're coaching at a giant college program. Lincoln Riley is going to be a guy, I think. He's going to be a good head. I think he's going to be a good pro coach whenever he makes that job. With Caleb gone now, too. They were talking about him getting the Cowboys job a couple years ago before they ended up hiring mike and it seems like like the expectations for usc like i don't know if they're ever gonna reach what they were when like liner and reggie bush were there like i don't know if they're ever gonna get back to that remember
Starting point is 01:13:57 that i mean obviously i'm old enough to remember that was when i was in college but that was like a golden era of us football. Just football. Just football in general. Like, everyone wanted to go to USC when those guys were there. There was like a five-, six-, seven-year run when those dudes are all superstar celebrities and you see everybody hanging out on the sidelines. Like, you don't get that. Maybe Miami back in the day. That's a similar kind of feel.
Starting point is 01:14:19 That's what USC had in, like, early 2000s. And that's another guy, too, like Prime, I assume, depending on what's going on with Colorado, who knows. But yeah, like if, you know, obviously Shadur and Shiloh, they're probably leaving after this year for the NFL draft. Definitely, actually. And if there was a job that were to pop up for Deion Sanders, you don't think he would be like, all right,
Starting point is 01:14:40 I might as well make the jump now too, if he wanted to. I know he said before. Do you think Deion would be opened up for any NFL jobs uh he said it a few times publicly like no but do you think do you think any teams are going to come after him I'm not sure it depends on how Colorado does not if they don't win this year I don't I don't think you can like with how many good candidates there are like I don't know if you can go four and eight and let's say they go even like eight and four this year like I don't know if you can give him a head coaching job after that. Yeah, I don't know if he wants to.
Starting point is 01:15:07 I know he's made comments like, no, I'm not going to be playing – I'm not going to be coaching guys that are making way more than me. Yeah, but we know how coaches' minds change, especially when you lose your son at quarterback who's going to be a first-round pick. We expect you lose Travis Hunter who will probably be a top five, top ten pick. If the opportunity comes, I'm sure he'll listen. And, you know, it's a lot, you know, going on around this program.
Starting point is 01:15:28 But, you know, we really look at it. All these top programs, there's always shit going off the field. Haven't been any arrests or anything like that at Colorado, but it's always something popping up. Oh, they got names. They got their names, their IG names on the back of their jerseys. They're showing this and they're showing that. So it's always a lot of noise around.
Starting point is 01:15:44 Always has been. Even when he was a player, he's always, you know, been kind of bigger than life itself, how he walks around. But it'd be interesting. I don't see him on the NFL level. Based off of what he said publicly multiple times, I don't see it. Maybe another college job. I know, you know, recruiting-wise, like that's always a weapon.
Starting point is 01:16:01 Somewhere in Florida or something? Oh, yeah, Florida, Florida State, you know, one of those, you know big he should didn't he think he should have got that Florida State job didn't he like weren't that didn't people assume he was getting that when that was up a couple years oh yeah before Norvell but if we're talking about Lincoln Riley could you imagine Prime like bringing that USC back like that would be a dude that could bring all those celebrities back to the sideline and kind of what it used to be when you were talking about like Leinert and all them yeah you gotta win you gotta win a lot and you got to win consistently, I think, to keep USC forward.
Starting point is 01:16:27 There's a lot going on out there. There's a lot of cool things you can do. Well, and now, like, you know, USC's picked to finish like fifth or sixth in the Big Ten this year. You know, it used to be like in those times it was like it wasn't even – even with Oregon, there wasn't even a discussion. It was like USC's going to win the Pac-10 without a doubt. Like, and now it's, you know,
Starting point is 01:16:45 if you have to play at least Michigan or Ohio State once every year, sometimes both in the same year, and then we'll still see how weird it is when they have to go play at Rutgers, you know, in November at like an 11 a.m. kickoff.
Starting point is 01:17:01 You don't want that smoke, brother. You're a big Rutgers fan, aren't you? They play tough ball, good schedule. What was the record last year, Gump? Do you remember? Do what? What's that? Did you say Rutgers could do what?
Starting point is 01:17:13 Look at their schedule, D-Butch. What was the record last year, Gump? I mean, Shiano's coming there, and Shiano's the right guy for that job, it seems like. Yeah, he loves Rutgers. He's got those boys buzzing. Born to coach in Jersey, but with the Big Ten, who knows? It was with Nebraska. Rule might happen.
Starting point is 01:17:28 I think Nebraska's going to be much improved, especially the guy with the little miniature Patrick Mahomes in there, Rayola. That guy looks good. And if he plays right away, that's three years of Rayola. Probably got some receiver recruits already that are seniors in high school now coming up that they see him, like, oh, we get a couple years with that guy. I can try to win the Heisman. That still what's so hard about like the midwest though is like you get those truly elite guys like ohio state and michigan are right there like i get
Starting point is 01:17:52 nebraska is going to be much better and they're kind of on the up and up right now but like it's same with iowa like those the way that they play and i guess we'll see with rayola like if they start throwing it more in their offense becomes dynamic but those guys don't want to go play in a pro style offense where teams run it 45 times a game and you might have three or four opportunities to catch a bomb or whatever. It's like, no, I'll go
Starting point is 01:18:15 play at Ohio State or Michigan where I'm going to have the chance to catch two touchdown passes every Saturday and that's just not how teams like Nebraska and Iowa. But will Nebraska pivot if they have a generational-type QB? Maybe. Maybe they will pivot. Wouldn't make sense,
Starting point is 01:18:32 but it just depends on rule. I can't wait for that. Rule's talked about even the weather. Yeah, exactly. I'm trying to think now. I can't recall one big-time receiver coming out of Nebraska. Obviously, the style of football that they've played. But like you said, a generational type player.
Starting point is 01:18:48 If he is what we crack him up to be at this point, we haven't seen him on the big stage. He looks good. Obviously, he looks like Mahomes. We saw him in the spring game. We'll see him when the real shots start firing. You know what's weird is all of a sudden he could go out and light up his freshman year and say like USC threw $10 million.
Starting point is 01:19:04 Exactly. Or any big school threw $10 million. Exactly. Any big school threw tons of money at him. I understand my dad played here. Here we go. I got a lot of ties to this, but this is a lot of money. That's a real thing if you light it up. Yeah, but who is it? D-Butt said yesterday. Not $10 million, but maybe
Starting point is 01:19:20 $3 million. It could be. We don't know, but there's also the difference. If he is that kind of guy, then you're thinking, hey, I'm potentially going to make $350 million when I go play in the NFL. You're not thinking like, oh, well, I can get $10 million to go play at USC. I mean, who knows? I guess that's all dependent on the kid. I hope not.
Starting point is 01:19:36 I love when – I mean, I don't blame guys for taking any money or going – if someone's going to offer you money, boom, take it. But it would be cool to see somebody like – if Ray O was like, no, I want to get this place back on the map. Drake May. Drake May could have left. He could have got whatever number he wanted to go to whatever big schools. And then he committed to Georgia
Starting point is 01:19:54 and Ohio State before he went. So does he have a big time year and go back to one of those big programs? Maybe not. If he has what it takes, regardless of what's around him, scouts can see it. These teams will see it and they'll take a chance on him. We'll see. We'll see what he does. That'll be interesting to watch.
Starting point is 01:20:10 Gumpy, who does Rutgers play and why are you so confident that they're going to go make a run for the college football playoffs? They're still in the Big Ten. I mean, yeah, they have tough games at the end, but they start with Akron, Virginia Tech, Howard. They got a pretty good start. We'll be tough at the end. La They got a pretty good start. Washington.
Starting point is 01:20:25 Will be a tough at the end. Law Tech is a sleeper in the ACC. Not against those Rutgers boys. I hope Luke has the boys rolling in Wisconsin. I can't wait for the season. I can't wait to see. How many days until college football? 17 days, actually.
Starting point is 01:20:38 How many days until NFL? 29 days. I can't wait to see what Bama is. Just the thought of, because obviously the boarder, Saban's gone, all that, but they still have Milrow. They still have Bama recruits five stars, and they lost Caleb Downs and a couple other guys to the portal, but it's still Alabama football,
Starting point is 01:20:54 and the expectation is still going to be to win. I cannot wait to see what they do. The only worry there is they don't have Grubb calling the offense. He went to the Seahawks. He was massive for DeBoer at Washington. Yeah. Caleb DeBoer, I like Caleb DeBoer at Washington. Yeah. I like Kalen DeBoer a lot. A great coach.
Starting point is 01:21:07 He seems like a great guy, too, when we have interacted with him. But man, he's stepping into a tough gig. Replacing Nick Saban. Impossible. That sucks. Replacing Saban. Saban's going around. He's on hard knocks, talking to his old pal. He coached Ibraflus in, what, 1990? What college
Starting point is 01:21:23 did Ibraflus go to? Toledo. Toledo. And that's where Nick Saban was his first head coaching gig, correct? I believe so. Was it Michigan State? I think he was at Toledo first and then Michigan State. He might have been. From the camera footage that we saw, I assume that was his first job.
Starting point is 01:21:39 Yeah, either way. Zito, I know you watched Hard Knocks front to back as we all did, but you're a little more invested than we might be. Where was he? Kent State, he started coaching. First head coach job. Head coaching gig, Toledo, boom, 1990. Eberflus was a young linebacker on that squad, correct?
Starting point is 01:21:55 He's a big son of a bitch. Young, but a massive dog. Talk about wrapping up. You're talking 1990 linebacker, like toilet bowl net toilet he had neck forearm pads and no rules never heard of cte and if you come across this middle guess what i'm taking your head off i'm sending it to your parents in the stands oh yeah that was when he played that was abrams football that's what he does good for him zito how'd the episode go i won't tell you rave reviews from everybody like I've watched most of it, talked to different people,
Starting point is 01:22:25 even people that are not Bears fans. Like, you know what? It was cool. They seem to like Caleb. They like Floose. They like, you know, obviously old buddy and the little Speedos singing. Great song. I give him a ton of respect, Canadian, doing that.
Starting point is 01:22:38 But overall, what did you think? I will say, like, overall, we planned that it wouldn't be, like, too much rookie stuff, and that was awesome. It was, like, just the right amount of floos, the right amount of Caleb. And, honestly, whenever they put the Chicago Bulls intro, that stole the episode by far. That was awesome. I don't know what his name is, the guy that does the intros.
Starting point is 01:22:59 Is that who it is? I don't know. Either way, he deserves credit because he's unbelievable at what he does. But it's good. What do you guys think? I know you're not a Bears fan, obviously, Con Man, but that's the tough thing about Hard Knocks. How do you get all these people that are football fans to care to watch this team when you're not a fan of that team, maybe?
Starting point is 01:23:15 I mean, they did a good job of just focusing on the shit that people want to see. It was Caleb. It was Floose. They did some stuff with Jesse Owens, right? Is that the right name? He was great. He was Floose. They did some stuff with Jesse Owens, right? Is that the right name? He was very fast. He might be the wrong name. Simone Biles' husband. Jonathan Owens.
Starting point is 01:23:35 They did some stuff with him, too. He went over the sensor in the garage door. Very athletic. He did a great job. His dogs were fantastic. But one of the best parts, I thought, was when they kind of showed how the DJ Moore extension got done. It was during practice. They, Poles, like, called down to the field. He was like, hey, very discreetly.
Starting point is 01:23:51 Awesome office, by the way. Yeah. Just looks over the practice. Fantastic. But he called down, like, discreetly, said, like, hey, tell DJ to come up Rosenhaus and all the boys are there. Like, did that happen when you were at camp? When people got, like, extensions?
Starting point is 01:24:02 Like, when people got, yeah, because immediately the vibes on the field, like him and Keelan Allen were screwing around. One of the old linemen was like, that just got done right now. We also knew that Drew flew in because he was like, am I going to be on hard knocks? Yeah, I'll be there. Smart.
Starting point is 01:24:14 Because Jason is his agent. Yeah, his brother. That never happened when I was in Green Bay, but it's a little different. There's no offices overlooking. The offices in the stadium we practice, it's where people ride their bikes down and work in practice. But if somebody just signed an extension, a monster deal or something, they come out to practice the next day, yeah, you know,
Starting point is 01:24:30 we'll cut a hole in the dollar. They got words yelling at them. Everybody got to give them some shit. Everyone's got something for them. Good vibes. I didn't know he was the highest paid bear ever. Me neither. You know, you just expect him to be some quarterback,
Starting point is 01:24:40 maybe Jay Cutler or one of these guys, but for him to be a highest paid bear in franchise history that was interesting he's done it without a consistent quarterback either right yeah dj more has been very consistently making plays but he's bet how many quarterbacks has he had career last year was his first year there first time yeah i mean that's what i'm saying like the guy that's good trade huh fantastic yeah not bad and they got c AJ, what did you do for your rookie show? Yeah, and don't do the, oh, I don't really remember. I don't think we did that.
Starting point is 01:25:10 I didn't do anything. We know you did. Big Snake doesn't do that. Luckily, my rookie year, thanks for the question, Tone Diggs. No problem. My rookie year was Big Mike McCarthy's first year as a head coach in Green Bay. That's how I put it on the show. And I was so happy to hear one of the first things he said to the team.
Starting point is 01:25:27 He said, we don't do hazing around here. We're not hazing. So he said, we're not hazing. He doesn't want to do all that stuff where, hey, the older guys pick on the young guys and do all this stuff. Yeah, I took the defense out to dinner and did all that stuff, but I did not have to do any kind of – McDonald's?
Starting point is 01:25:42 Hey, dollar menu only. It was a legit restaurant. It was a legit spot. It was a legit spot. You know, it's Green Bay. It's not Miami, though. Top five pick. That's different. They were fun.
Starting point is 01:25:50 Yeah, lucky Rob Davis. Appreciate Rob helping me out, kind of get everything set up. But, no, I didn't even have to sing, luckily, because I didn't – What? I mean, I had to sing my fight song once on Ohio State, possibly, but I don't even think we had to do that. Are you singing for us now? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:26:03 But I do know the words. I can sing. You got to clap. I thought you got up there and you did a Se He's singing for us now. I don't know. But I do know the words. I can sing. You've got to clap. I thought you got up there and you did a Seinfeld bit, you said. It was the deal. Yeah, I did not. That was pretty good. I did not.
Starting point is 01:26:11 That was pretty good. Okay, that's the problem, though. If I didn't get up there and did Seinfeld, but, you know, everyone's so young, too, they wouldn't even get it. No one knows who Jerry Seinfeld is. Well, in the NFL now. Well, back then, they would have. They would have a little bit, yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:22 Before I watched the Seinfeld locker room. Deebo, what about you? Did you have a rookie show? I absolutely bombed my rookie show. Me and Patrick Chung, we did it together. We sung a duet. In New England, right? Yeah, I booed Vince Wilford.
Starting point is 01:26:34 It's always one vet who kind of starts, you know, the snowballs. You know, starts throwing the decides, all right, if it's shit or not. But it was tough. And then we had, like, rookie skits. And we literally had to get up like 6 30 in the morning like like bill was like hey make sure you guys were meetings oh we to like rehearse and practice and then we had certain things you know it's a short list but like hey these three things are off limits all right you can't talk about wait who gave you the
Starting point is 01:27:00 who told you it was he it came i think it came from one of the vets. Can you give us an example of one thing that would have been awful? Like Spygate? We had some pretty big-time teammates and some things that was going on, so we couldn't talk about certain things or certain people. We kept it out. Coaches were fair game.
Starting point is 01:27:20 Coaches were pretty fair game. Coaches were pretty fair game. Obviously, you're going to have a Belichick bit and have some different things, some people making fun of Ernie or some different things. So we had a good time. We had a good time with it. Same thing, rookie dinner. But we did it as a team.
Starting point is 01:27:34 I know a lot of people, when I was with the Colts, we used to do it by position group. Some people do it as a unit, defense, offense. And we did it as a full team. I believe it went to Capitol Grill. We had a big draft class, too too so it made it easier on me it was I think four second round picks no first round picks on me Chung Ron brace guy arrested so and Sebastian bomber top four picks and um so we took the bulk of it we had Julian Edelman Brian Hoyer we had a big big Brandon Tate
Starting point is 01:28:03 uh Tyrone McKenzie we had a big brand to take. Tyrone McKenzie. We had a big class. Any of them good? Anyone put on anything good that you remember? Like, say? Like, rookie shit. Oh, I missed Rich Ornberger. So, he was. Richie.
Starting point is 01:28:13 Yeah, Rich, who was doing his thing. AQ's best friend. Yeah, exactly. Penn State, great. So, he was a young offensive lineman, but came into the league, forehead of great, great hair. But he was hilarious. He was kind
Starting point is 01:28:25 of like how pat was in our locker room like at any moment anytime whether we're waiting around to take a team picture and hey you know pat get up you know he got it get up and just yeah rich was just an all-time you know entertainer so he could stand up and carry so anytime you know we got hot and hey rich you know get up there that's awesome do something funny do something dance fat but then rich always did his thing thing, so shout out to Rich. I know DeBelichick makes sure that you guys knew everybody's first and last name. Oh, yeah. Would he call you up and quiz you, or would he just all of a sudden point at somebody
Starting point is 01:28:53 like, D-Bot, who's that? Call you out in the media, because we had on each side of the media room, so this side was the defensive side, this side was the offensive side, so we would have certain pictures of the guys. So it would be Matt Light or Vince Wood, Richard Seymour, whoever it was. And he would call the DB and be like, all right, who's this old lineman, number 71?
Starting point is 01:29:12 And tough names. You had to know the guy. You had to know what school he went to. So you had to know, oh, Matt Light went to Purdue. And if you didn't know, he would make you feel like, yeah, this guy, he only played in four AFC championships or did this or that, did that. So it was real important. You knew.
Starting point is 01:29:28 So after that first day, you know, when somebody get called out, it may not be you, but you know, all right, let me study this damn guy. So I know, you know, for him, it was like knowing your teammates, you know, knowing the history of your organization that you're playing for and all those different things. But it was fun. All fun. Was it fun? I mean, that's the thing people always think back to that day of New England.
Starting point is 01:29:46 Like, oh, was it fun? And people say, oh, it's fun to win. That's what the players say. Was it a cool atmosphere? Did you enjoy it? I mean, it was tough, especially coming in. It was tough, you know, Monday through Saturday. You know, but the best part about it is when you're out there
Starting point is 01:30:01 tunneling Sunday, you expect to win. It definitely was tough. But at the same time, Belichick did certain things where he would show his personality he would make it light hearted we had great vets too we had Big V we had Matt Light and you know vets really kind of obviously Tom and Randy Moss like Kevin Falk like we had OGs kind of in that room who kind of set the tone of the locker room so it wasn't like over the top hazing we didn't do a bunch of bullshit I saw on Hard Knocks you you know, sliding through the water. Everybody had to do that.
Starting point is 01:30:28 You know, you just spray the water. Everybody got to do a slide. Rookie coaches, rookie trainers, rookie players, everybody kind of had to go through it. Fight song, signing bonus, all that type of shit. But it wasn't too over-the-top. Was there anything that did kind of shock you in New England, like when it came to just being a pro versus, you know, the college team?
Starting point is 01:30:46 Because, I mean, you've talked about it before. You go from UConn, you're the best player, like, in the history of the goddamn team. And then you go to, like, a New England. Like, what was that biggest change for you? I mean, just the level of professionalism. Like how, you know, like you got – I mean, yeah, you had Billy O running the practice, but it was really, you know, Tom Brady running the practice. Somebody jumps off sides, like the whole defense that's on the field is taking a lap.
Starting point is 01:31:08 So just, you know, level professionalism every day. We practice, like, hard. It's like Fulgo tackling to the ground. Sometimes. But wouldn't you, I know you guys sometimes will do one-on-one tackling drills, like you and the running back, even after practice sometimes, right? Yeah, so every day, every day we had an open field tackling drill and we didn't always take guys to the ground but it was uh you know four cones set up and you would have to kind of come in at an
Starting point is 01:31:34 angle either from the right side left side and kind of get a good you know tag off or thud or whatever it was and you know you everybody did the drill so it would be randy ma and randy mossy but kind of coast through it. But you have Wes Walker. You have Fred Taylor. You got dudes juking. Oh, yeah, juking. You're trying to get a good tag off. But obviously, you know, open field tackling was huge for Belichick.
Starting point is 01:31:53 You know, regardless of what we give up, hey, you get a guy to the ground. That was big. And then, yeah, I had to, you know, you miss a couple tackles in the game. Yeah, post-practice for a couple weeks, you're going to be going full tackle with Ben Jarvis, Green Ellis, the law law firm after practice so i had to go through that after missing four tackles on one play in my first game as a rookie at one play one play last play the game i believe you've said you mentioned this to me have you said this on the show have you told the story monday night football yeah monday night football missed four tackles on one play gets the buffalo bills who were stacked
Starting point is 01:32:23 that year lee evans terrell owens roscoe pare Parrish Fred Jackson yeah a bunch of dogs on the field but uh it was good man and once I moved on from New England my second year I kind of got in the doghouse and hated and I was I couldn't wait to get you know to another place been a high draft pick got cut you deal with all those different things and then I went on to somewhere else and you see it was completely completely different. But weren't winning. Went to Carolina. First year, Ron Rivera.
Starting point is 01:32:49 Cam Newton's a rookie. Like, damn, maybe that New England shit wasn't that bad. Then you go on to the Colts with Andrew Luck in that new era with Chuck Pagano. We won, but didn't get to that level. We fell short in New England as well. My last year in New England, we went 14-2, I believe, and then lost in the divisional round, I think, to the Jets, I think. And we had – Sanchez.
Starting point is 01:33:06 But, yeah, we had blew them out, you know, maybe three or four weeks before. Was that the light fumble year? No, no. That was maybe a year or two earlier. So we fell short a couple years. But moving on, I kind of look back. When I got kind of like year five in the league, I was like, okay, now I kind of understand why Bill will put us through all that different shit
Starting point is 01:33:24 throughout the week and why it shows on Sunday, why it wins conditioning every day after practice. That's something I didn't even do in college. And then coming to the NFL and doing that was crazy. It's a big deal knowing when you're practicing and you know, and football players especially, even basketball. In basketball it happens too. I go, how many suicides do I have a day after practice?
Starting point is 01:33:43 But when you know, hey, I got maybe a two-and-a-half-hour practice where we're going full speed, full tilt, we're hitting, but you know we're running afterwards too. Like, man, you think we're doing maybe 10 hundreds? I don't know, maybe five? You never knew. No one would ever tell you either, would they? Never knew how much.
Starting point is 01:33:58 He would just stand on the field, and maybe he'll stand at the 40-yard line, and you run, and then he'll back up 10 yards. And you just never know when it's going to end. Just keep going. There's something about that never know, because that's exactly my growing up, too. That's the same with me. High school, college, we never knew what the run was. You're always trying to ask them, what are you going to do?
Starting point is 01:34:16 You never know. When you don't know when you're finished, I think it helps you. It sucks in the moment, but it gives you a mental edge. Were you one of those guys who wanted to know the full work I already got this, I want to know running, lifting. I'll lift all day long. Running, I always got. It killed me all day.
Starting point is 01:34:33 The run always killed me. Our test at Ohio State was 20 half gassers. And shout out Bobby Carpenter. His 41st birthday a couple days ago. He runs 20 half gassers in the same time that we had to run it in college that's 19 for the first 10 8 or 18 for the first 10 i think maybe 18 seconds the whole time with 30 seconds break and he did it film the last one um so i would we would get up to we'd run like 24 26 half gasters leading up to the test throughout the summer and i'm not a strider and you kind of
Starting point is 01:35:02 got a burst stride there's a whole science to how you're gonna run that and that would that would mess me mess me up mentally when I knew that was coming sure well you have bad knees too uh with the Patriots one of the big conversation with Bill was always like practicing in the elements instead of going inside was that something too that you did that was like all right what the hell are we doing here once again though we had on Sundays to show up so like practice it sucked because you know especially if you're a vet i was a young guy so i didn't care but rain sleet and we could be playing in you know miami that week and we're still outside still outside of cold rain it's like all right i don't get this one but then it was a game it was one game my rookie year actually
Starting point is 01:35:39 tennessee uh we beat him like maybe 59 nothing that or something. That's when Brady threw for like six touchdowns. It was like a flash blizzard out of nowhere. So, like, Tennessee, we saw them pregame, and we just knew, like, oh, we're going to beat the hell out of them. Looking at the snow like, oh, shit. No balls and shit. And we didn't know it was coming either, but we were obviously more prepared than they were. So, you know, practicing in the elements, once again,
Starting point is 01:36:00 it showed up on game day. But as a player, you hate it. All that shit you got to put on. Some guys are out there in hoodies and different thing and bill he didn't care he was like hey you know get you some shit get you some cleats that work come out here ready to pray it's new england at any point in time that was a big advantage for them when they got in the playoffs you know it was always going to be some type of shit that happened at foxborough and gillette stadium um that usually benefited the patriots because, you know, more times than not, they were more prepared for it.
Starting point is 01:36:25 Do you trust, like, a dome team? Say you're playing a dome, you play indoors. Do you trust that team as much as you do an outdoor team? Like Kansas City, we know they play in all the elements. But let's say a team like Detroit makes a run, they continue through the regular season. Do you trust that they can go on the road in the playoffs and win in, you know in cold, windy weather?
Starting point is 01:36:46 Even though they've done it in the past, but their home spot is not there. It just depends on the top seeds, right? I mean, if the Lions or the Niners are the top seed, it's like, okay, well, they play in good weather and won in a dome, but if Green Bay is the one seed,
Starting point is 01:37:01 like, yeah, you got to favor them over a team if they were to play them in a dome. And the schedule. It's like the Bills. The Bills, their whole thing, like, yeah, you've got to favor them over a team if they were to play them in a dome. And the schedule. It's like the Bills. The Bills, their whole thing was like, hey, we play outside. And then in the biggest moments, it hasn't, you know, gone to their advantage. Like, it's so different, I feel like, even when you look at the previous Super Bowl winners. Like, Tampa, they're not a dome team, but they still got it done.
Starting point is 01:37:22 Yeah, and they played. Do they have home field or did they go on the road? I know the Super Bowl was on the road. They went on the road. They beat New Orleans in New Orleans in Green Bay and Green Bay when it was tough. How many picks, right? But Scotty down the sidelines before halftime. Remember that?
Starting point is 01:37:40 Kevin King. Sure do. That was like a throwaway play. That was nuts. Yeah, remember he was off the field and then took his jacket off and ran back on. Were they going to spike it or kneel it? What were they going to do? They were going to do something.
Starting point is 01:37:50 They were punting. They were kicking the ball. I forget if it was a field goal or something, but Tom legitimately took his big, heavy jacket. Oh, that was brutal. Yeah, devastating. It depends on the quarterback for me. Tom, obviously, was Tampa, but it's Tom Brady.
Starting point is 01:38:04 That's when I think hand size comes into play. You know, we talk about hand size going into the combine, and they always want to talk about it. I think there's something to it when it comes to cold weather games. Oh, yeah. It really is. I don't know how big anyone's hand is actually in the league, but I guess, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:38:18 Well, it's like the thing with Purdy or Mahomes. Mahomes doesn't have that big of a hand. Really? Yeah, that's always the conversation. Like, oh, well, this guy's got a 10-in-one hand. What's Mahomes's? And then you look at it and it's not as big as you think. You've got to test their grip strength.
Starting point is 01:38:30 I've got a grip strength tester at home. A little digital readout. You squeeze it. So maybe if I could send that around to all the quarterbacks. Yeah, that actually would be fun. You think that would help? Yeah, it would be a huge help. I wonder where Aaron would claim that he would have the –
Starting point is 01:38:40 He's got monster mitts. Giant hairy knuckles and hands. Yeah, his hands are gigantic. So, yeah, he holds NFL football and just engulfs the thing. Yeah. Like hardball. Have you guys seen the clip of hardball throwing? Bigger Caleb Williams' hands.
Starting point is 01:38:51 Yeah, he did have big hands, right? He's like 6'1". Massive. Really? I'm not sure. Oh, geez. Okay, Zeke. I don't know if I can believe much of what Zeke says about anything to do with Chicago,
Starting point is 01:39:01 but I'll believe you. So I'm just seeking out back here. Yeah, if we get a list of the top hand sizes in the NFL, but I'll believe you. Yeah, if we get like a list of like the top hand sizes in the NFL, but I mean, it doesn't actually matter unless it's the other. Some guys can do it, some guys can't. But that was Lambeau's big takeaway with I mean, Tua, not to bring up Tua,
Starting point is 01:39:16 about like Tua in the rain. Has he done it in the rain or in the cold? Has he proven? I think it was like two years in Tennessee maybe, Gumpy. You can probably speak better to it, but there was a game in Tennessee where it was raining and he couldn't hold on. Playoffs on the line.
Starting point is 01:39:35 Well, it's on the refs to give us dry balls. What are we doing? Well, I mean, they got granted. I mean, I know we do not play well in the cold. I understand that. But that Kansas City game in the playoffs last year, good fucking luck, dude. I don't know who's marching in there and playing that game. Finns are 0-10 in their last 10 under 40 degrees.
Starting point is 01:39:53 Like I said, we suck in the cold. But, I mean, that game in Kansas City last year was absurd. We had no defense. Everybody was hurt. We trotted out who Bruce Irvin we signed like two days before the game. He's a good player. Yeah, he's a good player. A few years back for sure.
Starting point is 01:40:11 Speaking of that, there's a bunch of free agents out there. I want to see if we can pop that list up. We have it somewhere. I was looking at this list today, D-Bud. I know I was talking to you earlier about it. A lot of these guys I thought were on NFL rosters. There are some some really really good football players on this list i can't believe are not free agents i would imagine lambo so this is
Starting point is 01:40:30 the best time he feels like to add guys like this so we saw what justin simmons is see if a workout we said yeah he's working out with the saints uh jimmy graham is retired uh is he officially retired yeah he did i know he's rolling around though i know he's training oh did he do a whole retirement yeah yeah he did a whole i think i know he's rolling around, though. I know he's training here for... Oh, did he do a whole retirement? Yeah, yeah, he did a whole retirement. I think I'm going to give Jimmy a roll. I think he might come out of retirement. Sure, absolutely. What do you think the first three guys off the board?
Starting point is 01:40:53 I mean, the fact that Larry Guy is a free agent is an asinine thing in the history of the NFL. He's one of, if not the best in the NFL. I played with Larry Guy. I know. Yeah, exactly. Me too. Talking about three heads in here. Nobody QB pressures like Larry Guy. Amen. You're, exactly. Me too. Talking about his head. Nobody QB pressures like Larry Guy.
Starting point is 01:41:06 Amen. You're right. Press them like a son of a bitch. It's going to be Justin Simmons, D-Butt. It's going to be Steph Gilmore. How is Tannehill not a backup somewhere? Tannehill's going to be on the Raiders, hearing everything that's coming out of Vegas about those two quarterbacks.
Starting point is 01:41:18 How is the Bills not brought Micah Hyde back with their current safety situation? Hunter Renfro is not old. Micah might be coming to Miami, I think. Maybe here. I mean, we heard Gus Bradley speaking about the safety position. He didn't sound too happy about that. Was that a safety today that brought Josh Downs to? It was.
Starting point is 01:41:35 It was. Nick Cross, second-round pick, brought Josh Downs. And we've been talking about practicing and practicing like a pro. And I haven't seen the clip, so I don't know if it was preventable or not. Sometimes you do get in an awkward position where it's like hey if i try to keep you up i may hurt myself so hey we just gotta go down to the ground it's football buddy but uh you hate to see that happen at this time of year especially with a weapon like um josh downs but it it happens but um it would be interesting but those those names though what about pat p is pat peterson he's
Starting point is 01:42:01 still he still wants to play right i think so i think. I think so. I know Latavius Murray. I was with him a few weeks ago. He's in great shape. Adory Jackson, I'm surprised. He's got to be younger than Harrison. Michael Thomas. I mean, is Michael Thomas healthy? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:42:15 Bakhtiari, you figured he would have signed somewhere, but he might be another guy. A lot of these guys, I would imagine, it'll be toward the end of camp when you realize, you figure out what your roster is. Okay, we need some some help here we lost a guy there like that's usually what will happen yeah like Bakhtiari and Donovan Smith there's so many offensive line injuries I feel like throughout camp that we're just at the point where there hasn't been many yet like those guys are going to be on NFL teams this year yeah but some of them are definitely going to be on like
Starting point is 01:42:41 Lombo said after the first week of the season, so their salary is not guaranteed. Yeah, yeah. If you're a vested vet, if you're on the roster, the opening day roster as a vested vet, your salary that year, you can fully guarantee. That's most of these guys, right? Yeah, you can only do that once. You can do that once.
Starting point is 01:42:56 It's like termination pay or something. You can do it one time. Okay, might be. Is Bogatari still injured? No, I think he said he's good to go. Didn't he a couple months ago? Yeah. Why?
Starting point is 01:43:04 What do you ask that? Is he good on any hikes or anything? I don't know. I think he said he's good to go. Didn't he a couple months ago? Yeah. Why? What do you ask that? Is he good on any hikes or anything? I don't know. I think he's good. I thought he was all right. Something with the derby, he seemed to be doing well. Trey White, too. Is Tredavious White signed anywhere?
Starting point is 01:43:16 Yeah, he's – damn, I just saw him interviewing with someone. Is it Rams? Hunter Renfro is like 26 years old, isn't he? 27? Yeah, he's young. He's young, yeah, because that was the first time he got paid when he got cut from the Raiders. You have a guy like Ngakwe who's kind of just been like a mercenary
Starting point is 01:43:30 the last several years just being with a new team, but he always produces. It seems like he's had at least eight sacks. You could get Gilmore now too. Yeah. Lock him up outside. I hope he comes back to New England, honestly. If all the guys on here, Gilmore would be kind of the one.
Starting point is 01:43:43 X slowed a little bit, but he can still ball, man. I love it. What about Dalvin Cook? Is someone going to bring Dalvin Cook in? I don't know. Running backs are still here. Kareem Hunt is up here, too. That's a tough position, because especially coaches and general managers, they feel like
Starting point is 01:43:59 they're a dime a dozen, get them anywhere in the draft. Like you mentioned, having them fully guaranteed, Vesta is compared to a, you know, fifth or sixth round pick who, you know, you don't have to pay much. So it's tough, man. Some good guys on the street. Great guys, yeah. Great players.
Starting point is 01:44:13 Great guys on the street. That's why it shows you, too, like in the UFL, XFL, whatever they call it, there's great players all over America. A lot of guys that have NFL reps and have made plays in the league that are playing because you see guys like this that can't get a job right now. It shows you, I mean, they can. It's a timing thing, no question, but it shows you how good football is,
Starting point is 01:44:30 I think. How good the NFL is, how much talent there is. One of those UFL QBs just signed with the Chargers, I'm pretty sure. Really? I forget which one. Luis Perez? There it is. He just signed there. When do you think Herbert's back? First game? Well, it sounds like that's a pain thing, right? Like, is it going to be one of those?
Starting point is 01:44:45 It feels like, to me, when people have had it, you just want to find a way to make sure it's not lingering throughout the whole game. Yeah. But how much time is that? What does that mean? I mean, there's so many new pieces in play in L.A. You obviously want them in there. I would think he would be healthy.
Starting point is 01:45:01 I think they're slow playing. It'd be super, super careful to get him there week one. But that's tough, man. It will. That bothers the guys that I've known that have. That bothers them their whole career. Yep. They got to work through it, certain treatment.
Starting point is 01:45:12 Like turf toe kind of. Yeah. Turf toe is something that is crazy painful. And if you don't take like the full, if you don't get it fully healthy, it'll be nagging you and it'll be super painful all year. Plant foot, too. So right here, the quarterback, when he's dropping back. It'd be so much better if it was his left.
Starting point is 01:45:26 Yeah, a lot better. But it's tough. Quarterback, you're going to get tackled. You're going to go down in awkward positions. So your franchise quarterback making $55 million a year, you want to slow play it and make sure, especially with the receiving quarter. They don't have the greatest receiving quarter around them.
Starting point is 01:45:41 So you want to make sure Justin Herbert is healthy. It's possible. Big, strapping QB. He looks like an NFL quarterback. Yeah, I mean, the whole line, too. We need some more Joe Alt highlights. I want to see that big set of a big body. I'm sure they're going to be doing plenty of goal line over there,
Starting point is 01:45:56 don't you think? See him as an absolute road grader. Yeah, Harbaugh likes to bang, so it would make sense. Harbaugh was slanging the ball. He was throwing that thing around the yard. Yeah, I mean, I forget. Here we go. Look at his step.
Starting point is 01:46:06 Boom, boom. On time. Receives the snaps. A little wobbly, but on time. Yeah, I would have expected a little more zip on it, to be honest. Do we hear the news about Harbaugh? What? Spend it.
Starting point is 01:46:16 Year. Who? If he goes back to college. Oh, is that what they said? Yeah, yeah. If he goes back to college. If he goes to college, he has to sit out a full year. You're bad.
Starting point is 01:46:23 Yeah, it all shucks. I mean, I don't understand how that works. You never know. This is not the sign-stealing scandal allegations. This is for the previous recruiting violations. Cheeseburgers. What recruiting violations can you have now? Are there recruiting violations now?
Starting point is 01:46:40 I guess if you contact them when there's certain non-contact times. I don't care about recruiting violations. Who cares? You can't talk about the guys you recruit. If you do that or you write them a letter when you can't write them a letter, you send them a text at the wrong time, okay. Come on. I mean, it's all a bunch of mumbo-jumbo.
Starting point is 01:46:55 I thought there's no rules left. Once you opened up NIL, I felt like there's not a whole lot of rules. It was the COVID dead period recruiting allegations, allegedly. COVID dead, okay., allegedly. COVID dead. Okay. I mean. Well, technicalities. Yeah, that's how it works.
Starting point is 01:47:09 Well, that's what the NCAA is working through, and that's what Pat said. Hopefully we're in good hands. Yeah, exactly. What's his name again? Chuck Baker. Chuck Baker. And it sounds like his, another, the playoff guys is great too.
Starting point is 01:47:19 If you hire good people, good things will happen, right? That's what they say. That's Chuck Baker's MO. Steve Jobs? Yeah, he said it. Did he? Amongst others. Who's the best leader ever to live in America? Bill Belichick. Right after Eisenhower. Might be right.
Starting point is 01:47:34 General George Patton. George Patton? Maybe. I haven't seen much on him. I might know of him, of course. Oh, so you don't know anything about military history? He died before my time, a little bit. Before I could truly study. Most people did. I mean, Lombardi, both Vince and Michael.
Starting point is 01:47:49 Bruce Springsteen. The boss. Shang-Chi. I forgot about Shang-Chi. Shang-Chi. Art of War. Who? Shang-Chi.
Starting point is 01:47:56 I think that's... Shang-Chi is not... I don't think that's what he's going for. Shang-Chi is a Marvel character, Tony. Oh, no. Tony, how you doing back there? Hammer down. Time.
Starting point is 01:48:08 I'm doing great, AJ. Are we good on the medal count? Obviously, we have a hard out coming in about 40 seconds or so. No change in the medal count yet. No. Yeah, what about corrections for today? You have anything? Probably not.
Starting point is 01:48:17 I'm going to need more than 40 seconds. What happened? Just give us a quick, you know, Cliff's Notes situation. Let's do it after the break. Well, okay. Well. It's going to take some time. Do you want us to correct your Sun Tzu comment?
Starting point is 01:48:29 Or is that a self-correction? You guys already did that. Okay, we did. Hey, what a great tease, Tone. After the hard out, we will make sure we come back to your corrections. That should be something. So stick with us on what? YouTube, Tech Talk Live.
Starting point is 01:48:42 Yeah, all the socials. All the socials. That'ss. All the socials. That's what they say. All the socials. We can't wait. ESPN Plus, boys. Had a great time with you guys the last few days. Pat, obviously, is on his way back to Indy.
Starting point is 01:48:52 Should be fun. I'll join you from the attic tomorrow. Can't wait. Everybody else, appreciate you watching. We'll see you later. Nailed it. Nice. Well done.
Starting point is 01:49:00 We hit it. Nice. Well done. I think we may have got close, right, Z? We get it? Nailed it. Thumbs up from Ed. All right, T got close, right, Z? We get it? Nailed it. Thumbs up from Ed. All right, Tone, what's this about?
Starting point is 01:49:07 Let's go back to Tone Diggs. Why are you slow rolling us here on that? I wanted to get you on ESPN to give corrections. Well, no, I mean, there was just a plethora. I don't believe that. During the TC talk. Jesse Owens is not his name. It's Jonathan Owens.
Starting point is 01:49:23 Jesse Owens. The one thing that you guys did get right during TC Talk, Mountain Dew did look it up. Mountain is the nectar of the gods, as Connor did say. Good thing we got that cleared up. Cam Juergens is going to play center for the Philadelphia Eagles, not Landon Dickerson. Oh.
Starting point is 01:49:43 It was nothing that we need to bring up. That was only 40 seconds, by the way. We could have done this, Tom. We could have done this a little bit ago. Jesse Owens died in 1980, by the way. I'm just talking about Jesse Owens Stadium in Ohio State, the track stadium.
Starting point is 01:49:58 I knew that. That was the first name. It's J. Owens. Olympic, still. You can say it. So, I'm at Owens. Olympics, too. Yeah, I get it. Yeah. You can say it. Thank you. So, Simone Biles' husband, Jonathan, is that correct?
Starting point is 01:50:10 Yeah. He's a DB. When was he drafted? By Green Bay? I don't know if he was drafted by Green Bay. So, I mean, he's going to be on the roster for the Bears, right? He got repped last year, though. He did play.
Starting point is 01:50:20 He got a deal. He got like a million. The Bears brought him in. Yeah, so good. So, she'll be going to Bears games. Oh, yeah. For sure. How tall is Simone Biles?
Starting point is 01:50:27 Not tall. 4'8", I believe. Is it really? 4'8"? Yeah, for sure. My sister-in-law, she was an Olympic gymnast. She's barely five foot. So, like, you have to think the gymnasts and how they are.
Starting point is 01:50:39 Your sister loves Mary Lou Retton? No, her name's Alicia Sacramone. She was in the Olympics. Winchester State's from great. She got a sweet video in college. She's South Pole. She knocked a dude out. The dude asked her to hit him.
Starting point is 01:50:51 She clocked him. He kind of fell face first. Is there anyone in your family who isn't some superstar athlete? She just got back from Paris, actually. She picked the Olympic team that won. She was a big part of picking the team, I guess. Yeah, it is weird how it's all connected. Don't you just got any like schlubs for brothers-in-laws or sisters-in-laws?
Starting point is 01:51:10 I don't know. It's a good question. Answer, no. Just like a guy who's like a mechanic? No, because there's not that many of us. Can we get a goddamn mechanic? Can we get a ball? We need a mechanic, actually.
Starting point is 01:51:21 We could use one. You got a Stanley Cup champion. You got a gold medal. So you got Brad from Home Improvement. I don't know if you have one related there. Keep going. ZTB, Zachary Todd Ryan. Brady Quinn.
Starting point is 01:51:34 Next VP. Alicia, his wife. Brady married a gymnast. Vance is your brother-in-law, right? Who? JD. I'm not related, actually. But I hear some people tell me he looks eerily similar to you. I've been tagged.
Starting point is 01:51:47 He's taken some shots. Is he really? From the new guy, right? He did take a shot. I did see that, actually. From the D.C. I was going to say, that's the state champion head football coach, formerly in Minnesota.
Starting point is 01:52:04 Oh, really? And he tweeted, great day to enjoy one of the greatest drinks of all time. Hashtag diet mountain dew that someone brought back up. Yeah, people were saying. Oh, so he's just taking shots all over the place. Oh, yeah, big time. Okay, it should be a fun debate season. Sure.
Starting point is 01:52:20 Are there debates coming up? Should be entertaining. I think that's a debate in itself. If there are going to be debates? Yeah, I think so. I think that's a debate in itself. If there are going to be debates? I know there's an interview Monday. Walters? Is there an interview Monday for who? Elon and Trump are doing an interview.
Starting point is 01:52:36 They're interviewing each other. That should be good. I'm being dead serious. Did you guys watch Bryson with Trump and his break 50 thing? That whole thing is hilarious. How it works. I'm being dead serious, yeah. Did you guys watch old Bryson with Trump and his Break 50 thing? Yeah, Break 50, no. That whole thing is hilarious, how it works. I was thoroughly impressed with his golf game. I know.
Starting point is 01:52:50 He was smooth. Bryson is such a cartoon character. Just hitting the ball 5 billion miles. Like, he's awesome. He's doing great. You still watching Liv, Tone? I've never. You said you only supported Liv.
Starting point is 01:53:05 What, D-Butch? Why don't you watch it? You can't find it. And then, Foxy, you want to tell them? Yeah, I've tuned in to a couple Live events because those leaderboards are incredible. The last event I watched, it was like five, six guys in contention, all great golfers, all people we know.
Starting point is 01:53:27 And there's no easy way to say this. The production is just really bad. They've got to fix it. They've got to get like we see on Sundays with the PGA tournaments. How does that happen that when they have what seems like endless money, you've got to pay for the great production? That's why I'm shocked because I just don't understand it. And maybe, you know, they're still trying to work out the kinks,
Starting point is 01:53:49 but it's just not the same, and it makes it a lot harder to watch. And, like, the big moments aren't big moments because of that. Yeah. They have everything. He did. Or Liv. So, Rom won on Liv, and it looked like he was sitting shotgun going to win a gold medal, right?
Starting point is 01:54:04 He was. He ended up with nothing. That would be tough. That would be really tough. I mean, not as tough as, who was it, Kim? Yeah. You saw that, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:54:13 So if he medals, he is exempt from military service. Correct. Do they have to serve like two years? Two years. I believe so. You think they'll give him an exemption still because he was close? No. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:54:23 In these times? I don't know. So he's going to have to leave the tour, boom, go? I also believe he's been living in the United States since he was like 10, so he's like basically a U.S. citizen. Come and get me? What'd you say? Come and get me, guys?
Starting point is 01:54:33 Well, I don't know if he's going to do it. I mean, BTS, who are like the biggest stars in the world, they're like, hey, guess what? Yeah, what do they do? You're not going on tour anymore. You're going to fucking serve. Are they? They just got done serving for, I don't know if all of them did, but a couple
Starting point is 01:54:46 members just ended their mandatory military requirements. That makes sense because I guess I was seeing them all over the place popping up and then I haven't for a little while. That's why. Yeah, because they've been laying scum. I don't know about what they do, but I know they're gigantic.
Starting point is 01:55:01 Those guys took over the world. Massive. Biggest pop stars in the world. Did Markkinen have to serve? Markkinen served, yeah, for Finland. He did a summer last year for his service. Really? Uh-huh. Just got, what, $230 million? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:55:14 All right. Thank you for your service for Finland. Utah Jazz. Utah Jazz. Our guy Ryan Smith. Shams broke it yesterday. Shams did break it yesterday. Yeah, he knew.
Starting point is 01:55:21 I remember that. Always does. Do you? Yeah. Shams was talking other stuff before the call. I think he was talking about a couple hockey players, maybe. Shams is trying it yesterday. Yeah, he knew. I remember that. Always does. Do you? Yeah. Shams was talking other stuff before the call. I think he was talking about a couple hockey players maybe. Shams is trying to branch out. He could if he wants to.
Starting point is 01:55:31 He's broken NFL picks before. Shams is like 25 years old, isn't he? He's very young and he's very young. He's a young gun. He's embedded as one of those NBA, what do you call them, insiders, newsbreakers. Sure, sure. He's an old soul. Is he? Oh, yeah. Why do you say that? Best friends with Le sure sure he's an old soul is he oh yeah best friends with lebron too shams yeah shams and we have boat we have two of lebron's best friends on the show
Starting point is 01:55:51 well i mean like wendy yeah when he's teammate you know confidant if you will i saw so i used to watch when i was in high school i watched lebron's team play and i played with sheehan cotton who unfortunately in the picture that you guys put. What? You put the head on there. He never played. You put it right over Sheehan Cotton's head. And I played, he was a D-line in Ohio State right there. I think that's pretty sure it's Sheehan Cotton. I think you're thinking of the wrong year, AJ.
Starting point is 01:56:13 I don't know. That's Windy, brother. Yeah, well, in that spot maybe the year before was Sheehan. That's his hand. So either way, that's definitely his hand. That's definitely Windy's left hand on coaches. From banging the paint. But I saw, I used to watch Wendy.
Starting point is 01:56:27 So LeBron, of course, breakaway dunks, boom, killing it. I watched Wendy do this sweet, like he looked like Dominique Wilkins in high school. Dead serious. He may have jumped from the foul line. And over the top, on top of a dude. I'm pretty sure he like teabagged the guy on the way down. That sounds like Wendy. And then he looked up in the crowd and he gave the wink and a gun to somebody. I don't know he teabagged the guy on the way down. That sounds like Wendy. He looked up in the crowd
Starting point is 01:56:45 and he gave the wink and a gun to somebody. I don't know who. It wasn't me. Wendy Football. The place went crazy. People fell out of their chairs. LeBron, I think he was standing right there on the court. Was he left tackle or quarterback on that St. Vincent? He threw 15 touchdowns to LeBron in two
Starting point is 01:57:02 games. I thought so. Still a state record. Didn't play at Centerville. Did Wendy, honestly, though, like, other than being an all-state basketball player, did Wendy play anything else? No, I think Wendy was an All-American writer in the offseason. Was he? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:57:16 Wait, did he go to Akron, St. Mary's? Did he go to high school with LeBron? I mean, what is reality anymore? Nothing is real that we see going on in the world. And now I never know anything, especially being in Ohio and trying to figure out what the hell is true or not from you guys. I mean, that's kind of a game, brother. It's a game, brother. Speaking of that, you play the wrestling game anymore?
Starting point is 01:57:39 Yeah, I've been cutting my teeth trying to. Okay. Yeah, there it is. He did. He attended St. Mary's James School LeBron would later attend I used Golden Flash He graduated from Kent State in 2000
Starting point is 01:57:52 You're telling me he played with LeBron LeBron graduated high school in 2003 So they gave him an exemption to come back What is this guy not understanding What are you not understanding I don't know AJ took him under his wing, brother. I guess I'm trying to understand the role that Windy played on this team.
Starting point is 01:58:08 He was his teammate. Glass eater. He was the star, brother. He didn't have a role. I guess LeBron wasn't on the team yet. From the free throw line, it was at UD Arena. Great place. Dayton Flyers.
Starting point is 01:58:20 I guess I shouldn't question it. During the game, Windy would be like, all right, that's their best player. I'm going to lock him down LeBron, you can worry about scoring this game You don't have to worry about both ends He's smacking the floor That's Wendy football Yeah, it is, I guess
Starting point is 01:58:35 For real though I watched LeBron play in high school a few times That was fun, that was an event Whole arenas, 15,000 people How much did it cost to get in? Good question. Did they up the prices? No.
Starting point is 01:58:47 Prices were up a little bit, but it's like the OHSAA or whatever. He played at the Pete. He's tone. What? No. Tone, but Ohio high school prices. No, he went. They played at the Peterson Event Center at Pitt for some reason.
Starting point is 01:59:00 I don't know why. And I went to that one. I can't remember. It didn't crush my allowance for that week is what I was thinking. Wendy killed it, though. Didn't Wendy kill it? That'll never happen again. Watching LeBron play against high school
Starting point is 01:59:14 dudes, some teams where their tallest guy was 6'3 and slow-footed, that's not fair with LeBron. I would sit there and watch those games and be like, LeBBron do not take one outside shot. You go to the hoop and dunk every single play which he kind of did at times
Starting point is 01:59:30 but he was killing it from all over but I remember a few like full court fast break dunks LeBron had in high school at UD Arena. I remember I was sitting in the end zone view watching one time and he has like a 30 foot head start on everybody and he did have a monster like classic lebron dunk dude in high school it was yeah it's because
Starting point is 01:59:51 lebron like you see what he looks like now that's kind of what he looked like in high school he was a man back then on the front page of uh slam like 16 or something like that was crazy and then over at oak hill was it mellow and yep their was stacked. I remember some games seeing them or seeing some shit from ABCD camp. Like, LeBron was, like, that hype that he had, we had never, I don't think we, I know Zion had it, but especially for that time without social media, like, he was wild. Everything he did, it was crazy. It was, like, right before social media and everything kind of took off.
Starting point is 02:00:22 Bryce Harper was kind of like that a little bit when he was in high school. And both those guys have exceeded their expectations. Yeah. Yeah. LeBron has absolutely exceeded what we – Yeah. No one's ever had those expectations placed on him, I don't think. Ever.
Starting point is 02:00:35 That LeBron had from, like, 14 years old. Yeah, ever. We all knew of him. Yeah, maybe, like, Kareem. But way before our time, like, he was unbelievable in high school. Won, what, three national championships, shit like that. But, like, as far as, like, LeB LeBron, everybody expected him to be the next Jordan when he was 17 years old.
Starting point is 02:00:49 A lot of pressure. He had six 8.240 in high school. What are the odds, too? You talk about things being wild. All of a sudden, Cleveland, they get the first pick and they draft him. He's from right down the road like that. How's that happen? Well, a lot of people say that was kind of, you know, they said it.
Starting point is 02:01:03 They think old David Stern. Yeah. You think he was it the was it the the balls were they yeah picking balls out of the thing i mean you can make the same argument with one b like with the three teams that were being decided that happened in hockey as well blackhawks got the first pick over somebody else right nick last year two years ago yeah i remember talking to somebody about that someone said don't worry it's between these two teams chicago is gonna have the first pick.
Starting point is 02:01:25 Happened with Derrick Rose in Chicago. Funny how that works out. He ended up being the number one pick. We thought it was going to happen with Zion. Everybody thought he was going to end up in New York, but he ended up in New Orleans. How's he doing? Zion?
Starting point is 02:01:38 Amazing. Great. When he plays, he's unbelievable. But how healthy was he? He actually had a good year last year. It was not the same. He needs to win. We need to see Zion making playoff runs every year.
Starting point is 02:01:47 We'll see. What do you mean? I mean, the league. Or get him on a team that happens. Yeah, the Spurs with Wembley are actually. J.J. Redick. What is J.J. Redick going to do as the Lakers head coach? I grew up a Duke basketball fan.
Starting point is 02:01:59 I love watching J.J. Probably be okay because he has LeBron and Anthony Davis. And they're not going to win a title. How long do you think he stays there? Until he gets fired. That's true. Is that two years or is that ten years? I don't know.
Starting point is 02:02:12 It depends. I mean, Shams has been saying, hey, listen, LeBron's only going to play two more years. He's just as good now as he was 15 years ago. So LeBron should just play another ten years. He should. He should play until he literally can't walk anymore. not and that's what he has said he's been like hey i'm i'm gonna do it like tom brady until my body gives out but lebron is such a physical specimen that nobody can go to the hoop like him like when he decides like okay i'm gonna go score like i don't think you can stop him even like passing
Starting point is 02:02:41 passing you know he i think he shot 40% from three last year. He developed post-game. And then you see him on Team USA, and it's like the best young players, the best old players, and he's 39, 40 years old, still the best player on the court. Obviously, he looks like still the best player in the world when you see him all together. So, I mean, I don't think we'll ever see anything like that again.
Starting point is 02:03:01 Obviously, football is a different sport. It's physical. But those big dudes, we've gone to games and sit courtside. You see how big these guys are running up and down that hardwood. 82 games and then he went to the finals damn near every year for a decade. So that mileage, it's crazy
Starting point is 02:03:16 what he's been able to do on the court. Insane. I want to watch JJ and see how they do. It's got to be an interesting spot. Need to trade for Luka Garza. Where is he now? Who holds his rights? Yeah, I want to watch JJ and see how they do. It's got to be an interesting spot. I need to trade for Luka Garza. That would help. Where is he now? Who holds his rights?
Starting point is 02:03:27 Minnesota just signed him to a massive new deal. Oh, they gave him the max. Marking a deal. Give him a max. Not the max. Because he won a team. He's like, no, no, I want you to sign other players, too. Yeah, he's good with whatever.
Starting point is 02:03:37 He said, give me two years, like $800,000. Just get me on the court. Two years, $800,000? You think this guy's fucking playing for popcorn and peanuts? For real, though. Get the fuck out of here. How many NBA games has Luka Garza played? Well, I don't know. He had the most
Starting point is 02:03:52 points per minute in the playoffs. I'm trying to figure out because I remember Luka Garza in college very well. He's fucking unbelievable. He just needs to spot and get in the game. How Ty talks about him, like this guy gets in and averages 28 a game, but I don't know how many games he's been on an active NBA roster. I mean, every game that
Starting point is 02:04:08 he played, they won this playoffs. What is that? How many? He would just come in and do blowouts. What? What do you want the guy to do? He plays two minutes, he scores eight points and fucking has four boards. Does he get in, though? Does he get in for two minutes? He would get in for the Pistons and just get
Starting point is 02:04:24 dunked on in the first two minutes. He's a liability on defense. Last year he played 65 games, averaged 30, 10, and 5. I don't know. Is that good? Where was this? Go back to him for corrections. What team was he on?
Starting point is 02:04:41 The Minnesota Timberwolves. He averaged 30 a game. Yeah. 30, 10, and 5. Correct. Are you sure, Tone? Where are you getting his stats? Google.com.
Starting point is 02:04:50 Okay. All right. I stand corrected, Ty. If he's averaging 30 a game, that's on me. I mean, if he was in the pick and pop with LeBron. Oh, my bad. Hold on. See ya.
Starting point is 02:04:59 Hold on. That was – See Kobe Shaq. Good luck. Old news. That was if he was given the amount of minutes he should have been given. So if you extrapolate what he was doing over the course of a full game. 32.
Starting point is 02:05:10 But in reality, it might be like 1.8. Because he played five minutes a game and scored four points. So you do the math. You tell me. So four times. I stand corrected, I guess. He just needs more minutes. Guy just needs a shot.
Starting point is 02:05:23 Just needs a shot. He could easily average 25. His plus minus might not be great, yeah. He just needs more minutes. Guy just needs a shot. Just needs a shot. He could easily average 25. His plus minus might not be great, but. Oh, here we go. Let's see if we have any stats. See? There's the math. So this past season, 25 games played.
Starting point is 02:05:35 So what is it? When you say 25 games played, is he being pulled up like midway through the year? Yeah. He's on two-way. He's on two-way. So does he go up and down throughout? Yes. So do you go play?
Starting point is 02:05:43 And he goes and plays in the G League. Does he? Like, no bullshit. Kills actually. Lights it up. So it's just a matter of time before he breaks out. No. Probably not.
Starting point is 02:05:52 Probably not, unfortunately. Why do you say that? I mean, when Foxy said that he played for the Pistons and got dunked on like every other trip down the court, that's why it hasn't really worked. We can teach him to play D, right? We can't teach anybody to score like he can. But we can coach him to play D. There's a man that would be a three-on-three Olympic legend That is a good point
Starting point is 02:06:09 He averaged 37 a game for the Iowa Wolves 12 rebounds, 3 assists Two blocks per game MVP if he would have stayed the whole season Okay Well, maybe next year, right, Ty? No, he doesn't need to be playing in the fucking G League. What told JJ to make a trade for him?
Starting point is 02:06:29 I just did. Oh, you just did. You guys ever go to a game at the old Staples Center, Crypto? Win like Kobe or anybody? You ever see anyone play? Yeah, I've been to Staples. Staples is a good environment. Kind of dark in there. TD Garden is probably, I watched that finals. I've never been there.
Starting point is 02:06:44 Yeah, finals, Celtics, Lakers finals, Kobe, all peers. TD Garden is probably I watched that I've never been there Yeah Celtics Lakers Finals Kobe Paul Pierce Those games were Unbelievable
Starting point is 02:06:52 Fucking nuts Yeah I saw Kobe play In Miami I believe I don't know how many years ago He had like 44
Starting point is 02:07:00 The game went to triple overtime And I remember saying I hope it goes to 10 overtime You just made that up Dead serious Dead serious. Dead serious. Are you sure? Yeah. I am sure. Don't lie. Why would I make that up?
Starting point is 02:07:11 Triple overtime. My brother got food poisoning and puked walking up the stairs. See? It's a lie. I gave too much info. Yeah, you did. Alright. I'm just telling you. I was there. That one's not a lie. Could it make up a fucking rookie year story in the NFL where you could make up some bullshit about Kobe Bryant. You could make up a story about Kobe scoring like 44,
Starting point is 02:07:29 and they lost the game, though. After talking about Luka Garza averaging 30, but then Tyquist should do about Kobe driving 40. You're lying. You're lying. Luka Garza may have been in there. May have been guarding Kobe that game. He scored 45.
Starting point is 02:07:42 Should have been. I tell you what, if he would have been, Kobe wouldn't have scored 44 that night. Luka Garza lock you up. Fucking amen. I mean, okay. This thing's coming to an end today, Ty. I think it was in the Luka Garza situation.
Starting point is 02:07:56 But obviously, Kobe did not lie about him. Tone Diggs, one more time, the hammer. Time! Any update on the medal count? Did we take a giant lead over China? Where are we? No, there's been no golds given since the last or any medals given since the last.
Starting point is 02:08:15 I don't believe. 200 soon. Coming up. Yep. 200 is coming up here very, very shortly. That's the semifinals. The men's 400 finals at 320. The steeplechase finals 343.
Starting point is 02:08:25 So there will be some. We'll have a new medal count for tomorrow. Women b-ball playing at 333. We're going to win by like 80, right? I would think. For sure. A lot of WME players, they're trying to not do as much now. They would go overseas and play in the offseason because they can get paid money.
Starting point is 02:08:41 It'd be the winter. But is it all Americans over there? Because shouldn't the rest of the world in women's basketball have the, you know, shouldn't the competition be, have risen like the men's has? Like men's, we say like there's all these internationals all over that are great. Do we see it in women's? I don't think as much just because the women's leagues in other countries pay pretty well.
Starting point is 02:09:03 And I don't think they're full year-round, but I think there are other options for them. That's why I like the unrivaled league with Breonna Stewart that she's starting, the three-on-three league. That's like kind of a replacement in the winter. Who just signed to that? Paige Buckets got an NIL deal from them. And they, like that league, she came on and talked about it on the show.
Starting point is 02:09:23 That league is going to be paying those girls good cash, too, right? And equity. So Paige Bucket's got equity in a team. Can we watch it somewhere? I think they're still figuring all that kind of stuff out. And they're going to play this winter? Will it be the first season? I think so, but I don't know.
Starting point is 02:09:37 Man, that's a tall task. That's a big deal to take that on. Where are you going to get all the revenue from? I had investors. Oh, yeah, they did have investors. Yeah, it sounds like some good investors and players. TV, no travel. It's all in one location.
Starting point is 02:09:51 So that's a massive part of it. By running plays, some trick plays, baby. Strike while it's hot. What's that about? Remember the Titans. Is it? I do have an update, actually. I just found one.
Starting point is 02:10:03 Oh, is it Sun Tzu? It's weird. It's weird, though. I just found one. Oh, is it Sun Tzu? It's weird. It's weird, though. We did just get another gold. Okay. Yes! But it's the... Speed climb?
Starting point is 02:10:14 No, the Olympic figure skating team event. USA just got gold. They are in Paris, but it's from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics because they just suspended the Russian team. So we just got gold. So we got awarded gold. From Tokyo? Yeah, but I don't know. So we got pity gold? But if that's for the Winter
Starting point is 02:10:32 Olympics, though, can we claim it both in Winter and Summer Olympics? I don't know. It's not a summer event, so I don't think so. But they are in Paris celebrating it. Oh, they're actually celebrating it? Because the Russians, were they doping or what happened? Did they tweet with this? Yeah. They just... Because the Russians, were they doping or what happened? Yep. Go ahead, Zeke.
Starting point is 02:10:48 Can you search figure skating team event? Yeah. Is it part of the doping scandal or no? Yes, I believe so. I can confirm, Tony, speaking the truth. We don't have all the details as to why and how, but this did happen. How'd they just get caught or why did they just get caught? I mean, there's this whole entire thing about how the
Starting point is 02:11:04 Chinese, when they were testing, allegedly they were kind of just sweeping a lot of the ones that didn't pass the test just sending in oh yeah really yeah phelps just spoke on this and they brought them they brought them to paris to give them the gold medals today i mean i guess it's kind of it's cool i'd be pumped but then i'd be like all right well i didn't really win did i absolutely looks like they brought i guess you did It looks like they brought all the teams there from that 2022 Olympics to give them the different medals. So whoever was in fourth, did they give them bronze? It looks like it.
Starting point is 02:11:34 Yeah, pretty sure. All right, yeah, okay, good for you guys. Think about how many people were talking shit to this whole team about not winning and now, two years later, being like, what did you say, bitch? Yeah, what happened? You guys suck. You only got a silver medal. Yeah, you see this around my neck? What is
Starting point is 02:11:48 this? Gold, bitch. Yeah, I had a bronze medal in my house. Is that Nate Chen? Yeah, I believe that is Nathan. Nate Chen. Hell yeah. Our boy wonder. Nice. He's our pony. Good for them. That's awesome. Yeah, it is. I saw, I don't know what Olympics it was, but I got a bronze Jack Johnson. My brother-in-law,
Starting point is 02:12:03 he had bronze or silver he has from the Olympics that he had in my safe for a long time before he could put it in his house. I don't know what it was, what Olympics it was. I think he's playing a few of them, though. Oh, yeah. When was Sochi? No, 16 was Rio. So would Sochi be?
Starting point is 02:12:21 Sochi was winner. Yeah, so Sochi would be, what, 14? 14, maybe. Yeah, because 2010, I believe, was when we lost. 2014 was Sochi be Sochi was winner Yeah so Sochi would be What 14 14 maybe Yeah cause 2010 I believe was When we lost 2014 was 14 Rio was when Lochte
Starting point is 02:12:30 That whole situation Yeah Bingo Lochte That was so 2016 You guys ever been to Brazil Nah Brazil
Starting point is 02:12:37 Nope Are you Packers game yeah Oh nice You're going Not No I'm not You're not going AJ
Starting point is 02:12:43 Why'd you do that AJ said he was going Why'd he do that? Why'd you fall for it? It's on a Friday. We got a show. You seem so genuine. I thought you were tossing out the first ball or something. You're delivering the game ball to the squad. That'd be cool.
Starting point is 02:12:56 You guys did it in Iowa? Did you have that in high school in Ohio? A lot of times the local news guy would fly the news helicopter in and he'd deliver the game ball. He'd land on the 50 and they'd say, oh, Mike Hartsock, who's been there for 50 years forever, they would fly him in on the news chopper and he'd land on the 50 and hand the ball to the ref and then he'd wave to the crowd
Starting point is 02:13:17 and he'd take off. No, that sounds like a huge waste of money in terms of community resources. Well, he was coming anyway because he got to film the highlights for football Friday night. For Eagles Packers. That would make sense. When he hands the ball, he just stands in the middle and goes, this is Brazil. And then he stands there the whole game. The whole game?
Starting point is 02:13:36 You got to play around him? Yep. We got to practice that. We got to get a mannequin and stand up there and practice around it. Way heavy. Belichick, he'd figure it out. He'd hire somebody to stand there. Yeah, they and practice around it. Way ahead of you. Belichick, he'd figure it out. He'd hire somebody to stand there. Yeah, they'd practice all week. And he's doing that. And then Pitbull has the naming rights to FIU.
