Hello beautiful people and welcome to our humble abode the thunderdome on this hey coach wednesday
august 14th 2024 this program starts now football he's the greatest and today we have two coaches
uh in the nfl joining us matt iberflues of the chicago bears will join us in a second hour and
offensive coordinator for the pittsburgh steelers arty smith will join us now the second hour and offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Artie Smith will
join us. Now, we do believe he will still
have his mustache with him. If not, we will
kick him off the show immediately.
We have a relationship with Coach Artie Smith
that goes back to last year where he joined
us damn near every week as he was the
head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. It did not
go as fantastic as everybody
had assumed, but now he's back in an
offensive coordinator role
with a team that is very near and dear
to the style of play that he likes to have.
And now with the success that he had at the Titans,
with the buzz around the Steelers,
with the defense they have,
if he can bring the...
back.
Boy.
Pittsburgh Steelers fans will love this guy
and wait to hear him talk.
I can't wait to get his take on training camp at St. Vincent, the new kickoff.
He's going to have thoughts on the new kickoff, the Guardian caps, everything.
We can't wait to chat with him.
And then later in this hour, we'll have Mike Greenberg joining us to chit-chat
about one of the biggest stories happening around the NFL,
which is obviously Hassan Reddick is still not at the New York Jets practice facility.
He's never been there, except for once.
I had to do a press conference when he got traded from the Eagles
to the New York Jets.
And the reason why he got traded from the Eagles,
even though he's an all-pro player and a phenomenal football player,
gets in a passer.
Oh, yeah.
A lot of sacks.
He's got one of these.
He's got a couple of these.
He does all of this.
Some of this.
Some of that. Some Phelps. Yeah, and he's got a cool helmet. You know, he is a couple of these. He does a little of this. Some of that.
Some of that. Some Phelps.
Yeah, and he's got a cool helmet.
You know, he is a real good player.
But the reason why the Eagles had traded him
and why he didn't want to play for the Eagles anymore
is because they weren't going to pay him a contract.
And he knew that one year left.
The Eagles say, okay, we can probably get something in return.
And they did.
Okay.
They certainly did.
Good haul.
With the New York Jets for this.
And then you would assume,
especially because of what's going on with the IUC situation,
if we live in the modern day, everybody on earth understands that, hey,
for the IUC trade to go through, what would have to happen here, you see,
is the team would have to give the San Francisco 49ers enough for the 49ers to go,
okay, that's enough for a guy who's going to be your number one wide receiver.
And then also you've got to get a deal done with IUC, you see,
because his deal is up after one year.
So that would happen before the trade. Correct. That would happen before the trade would happen. And then also you've got to get a deal done with Iuke, you see, because his deal is up after one year.
So that would happen before the trade.
Correct.
That would happen before the trade would happen.
We all kind of know that right now because of this Iuke situation.
Hassan Reddick got traded.
Deal was not done.
Still not done.
He's so pissed.
Trade me out of here.
So he told the Eagles, you're not going to pay me.
Get me out of here.
He tells the Jets now without ever stepping foot into a walkthrough,
into a practice, into a meeting, into anything for the New York Jets.
I don't even know if he's ever put a helmet on.
I don't even know if he's ever put a New York Jets helmet on.
He's working.
We know he's working, so he's had it.
Pros, pros. Coach Sala said that whenever he was missing the mandatory OTAs
alongside Aaron Rodgers.
Unexcused, both of them unexcused.
That is on in the dictionary.
So we understand that that entire situation.
But this has become very – we'll talk to Greenberg in 27 minutes.
You have to.
Can't wait for that.
The IUK situation is continuing to boil.
We'll definitely talk about that.
The Talks at Table is here at Boston Corner and at Ty Schmidt.
We howling at the moon right now, pal.
Yeah, you know, might as well.
We're getting real, real close to football now, 22 days to the NFL,
10 days to college.
So, yeah, it is kind of the end of the summer, howling at the moon,
and then the fall's here, baby.
Cannot wait for it.
I love everything about football season.
Yep.
You know, put a long-sleeve shirt on, felt okay with it.
Yeah.
Because the weather seemingly did break, although I saw Al Roker this morning.
He's in front of the alive.
Jeez.
He's, whoa.
Jeez.
Al Roker.
Let's not dance with the mic that quickly.
I'm not going to look that way.
Yeah, let's not.
I like the addition of it.
It saved us when the power went out.
Right.
But we don't need to pull the trigger that quick.
He was pointing out, I guess there's a lot of heat coming over here in America.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, no.
I guess there's like a heat, real, real heat coming.
Okay, wave.
And then down here, Florida, east coast down to bottom is bad.
And then Texas, Louisiana.
Sure. I guess there's some real heat coming because there's a hurricane coming up from the Caribbean up the right side.
They believe it's kind of spraying a little bit.
But what we're in right now, and Al Roker even said it, dream days.
Pretty comfortable.
It is wonderful here in Indianapolis, Indiana.
And Tone Diggs put out a tweet about this the other day.
The other morning you woke up, you go outside, there was like a little, you could sense it.
Truly.
And it's like with all this football news happening, football games taking place,
and a show that has captivated our lives for what seems to be like 20 years now
is airing every single Tuesday night on HBO, on Max, sometimes on time, sometimes on time.
If you have cable, you didn't cut the cord. You have HBO East.
You were able to watch it last night
at the proper time that it aired. I think
9 o'clock. But on Max, they didn't upload
it for an hour and 35 minutes until after that.
We assume there was a technical glitch.
Let's remember these things do happen in
big ways nowadays. But this
Hard Knocks episode in series
with the Chicago Bears, I think Hard Knocks,
the training camp one, we're all kind of desensitized to it. I think Hard Knocks, the training camp one,
we're all kind of desensitized to it. I think we see social media clips and we kind of know
these guys from all their other content that what Hard Knocks did was certainly innovating,
groundbreaking and trailblazing, but we've seen it all before. So what is Hard Knocks good for
if you want to watch? Well, obviously access that you can't get anywhere else, but you learn about
these players. You learn about players.
And last night, the Chicago Bears,
I feel like there was a showcase of a few of their players
that are top-end guys,
and that's Jalen Johnson and DJ Moore.
Now, granted, Caleb obviously had a massive, massive night on the show.
Ibra Floose as well.
And Colin Johnson we celebrated because, obviously, how big he was there.
But whenever you talk about two studs on their team, both of them got got paid I do believe uh yes yeah I believe both of them have been paid
now that's what I took away from last night's Hard Knocks episode I know you watched last night
nine-year NFL vet Darius J Butler your thoughts on Hard Knocks yeah obviously you know you want
to see a head coach you want to see some of the under uh under you know unknown rookies you know
making their name for themselves Caleb but um seeing DJ Moore, Keenan Allen going at it in practice,
seeing him look – I'm sorry, DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, and Jalen Johnson,
who's an absolute dog, one of my favorite corners.
It was kind of almost like seemed like his episode,
kind of getting a glimpse of him.
Obviously, we saw some comments he made last week when the top 100 came out.
He wasn't on it.
Had some comments about Aaron being on it.
He definitely should be on, I think, a top five corner.
But to see how they compete.
You know, some guys, you know, one-on-ones.
You know, some guys, maybe, okay, this may be the period I go get my wrist tape.
I go do something else if I'm a top guy.
But to see the top guys compete with each other and obviously take that into the game.
Kenan Allen, look, hey, I know there's probably some editing going on.
I don't know.
But he's got to start winning some of these reps.
He's an absolute dog.
DJ Moore, love seeing him getting after it,
talking about how he loves football, getting banged
up in the game, and obviously Rome, too.
Rome had some glimpses in there as well.
He should be a top guy, top
target this season. I'm excited about these
Bears, man. I know Zeke's all Zeke'd up
back there. I'm excited about these Bears. Excited
to talk to Floose today, but high
expectations for the number one overall pick in the
team this year. Yeah, absolutely.
Caleb Williams is showcasing to be a veteran
in every sense of the word here.
And I think Keenan had him there,
ball in a different place, maybe he has a catch.
But this entire segment on Hard Knocks last night
was Jalen Johnson beating Keenan Allen.
Yep.
And Keenan actually coming out and saying,
I don't think I've got one.
I don't think I've got one on him.
And to Jalen Johnson, I believe there was
like a five-week stretch there where he had a pick in every single game.
Might have been four straight or whatever it is.
He was on everything.
Did be a lot.
Yeah, he was.
But he's a fifth-year guy.
I didn't.
So I didn't.
I hadn't known much about.
I do apologize.
That's 100% on me for not knowing much about him.
Please bear this.
Last night watching this Hard Knocks episode, it's like, oh, this is like guy-guy.
This is around like week.
Because Keenan Allen gets open in a phone booth.
Like that is what Keenan Allen is.
He's a third down guy.
He's always going to be on.
He's the guy who gets open.
And it's like, it was locked down.
And normally NFL films on hard knocks will try to balance it out.
Right.
You know, like, so we don't make any enemies here.
The balancing out for the pro Keenan Allen film was ball hit him in the arm.
And then Jalen Johnson made a toe tap interception.
It was like there was no baby face turn for Keenan Allen in this.
It was just Jalen Johnson doing his thing.
And you mentioned DJ Moore there.
And, by the way, we know Keenan Allen's a great player.
Great player.
All pro.
He'll have 100 catches.
Bingo.
Yeah, we are not saying that.
I just say, like, Jalen Johnson, that was phenomenal.
Then DJ Moore was spotlighted.
You brought up what he said.
So there was some news out of practice at the Chicago Bears
is that DJ Moore was banged up and limping a little bit
after a play along the sideline.
They were looking at his right ankle.
And then there was a follow-up tweet that was like,
excuse me, don't worry about it.
He's back on the field.
And I think if you watch last night's Hard Knocks,
DJ Moore as a wide receiver that not a lot of people know,
whenever he gets paid, remember the conversation wasn't about DJ Moore getting paid in Chicago.
No.
It was like, Iuke needs to get paid here.
Tyreek wants a new deal down in Miami.
Nobody even really thought about DJ Moore in Chicago.
That news comes out of nowhere, massive number.
It's like, okay.
And then you start reading the stats.
It's like, damn, this guy's a dog.
Here's him last night in the middle of a game.
You know, there's nothing.
Williams, buying's nothing. Williams.
By DJ Boyd.
Muscles for more.
I like football!
I like football!
Yeah, so that's what everybody's looking for.
Oh, yeah.
You hear all these coaches and scouts before the combine and the draft,
and you ask them, what are you looking for?
You're like, I just want somebody who loves football.
Especially in this day and age, there's going to be distractions.
There's going to be money available in places.
There's going to be ways to maybe not be the best professional football player
you could be.
But if you love football, you'll spend time doing all the other shit.
You will spend time watching a film because, once again,
you love watching film.
You'll spend time in
the weight room why because you know that that'll make you a better football player the love of
football is something that if you don't have it will show up at some point dj moore seems to be
the guy and then jalen johnson on the other side it's like and then caleb's doing he looks like a
10-year vet the way he's talking on the sideline it's like are they chicago and that's what hard
knocks has done over the years.
You watch it.
Bingo.
And you start, like, learning.
You're, like, falling in love.
But last night's episode made me do that for sure with the Chicago Bears.
And DJ Moore, obviously Jalen Johnson, those guys just got paid.
So, typically, a lot of times you see an NFL guys have a contract year.
They get paid.
Maybe they start, you know, not really bringing it.
So, them bringing that intensity, obviously,
every day in training camp with the competes.
You see him getting hit in a preseason game.
Like, he's obviously played in some big games.
And he's been productive, too.
In Carolina, he was productive.
Last year with Justin Fields, everybody had different opinions about Justin Fields.
Obviously, they moved on from.
DJ Moore had a career year.
And then, you know, earned himself a new contract as well.
You got Rome, obviously, a young guy who's going to be learning from DJ Moore and Keenan Allen every day. And then you have
a young quarterback like Caleb Williams. You have
those guys. And then Cole Komet. Cole Komet should be
a weapon as well. You got Swift. So they've done
all the right things this offseason.
Swift on that.
I mean, that play. There's a gear
he hits that he still has.
Still very much has it.
And he's just added into a culture that
seemingly was built at the tail end of last year.
And remember, they didn't earn the number one overall pick.
No, no.
That was not theirs.
That was Carolina Panthers.
So you've got a team that is not the number one overall pick with the number one overall pick.
Getting a guy who is seemingly worthy of a number one overall pick.
For sure.
All signs thus far.
We shall see.
Now, they're worse in the division last year.
Well, let's go to hammer dad todd ton did some uh research ton what do you have pal yeah pat uh
the hard knocks is giving the bears fans a lot of hope okay and that's what you know hope is one of
the strongest things you could ever rest your your yannis on okay yeah we've talked about that and
there's a lot of hope in the nfl every off season that's you know why pat because 19 of the last 21 seasons a team has gone from worst to
first in their division it being the houston texans last year who did it who afc south i
believe they had two wins a year before and then they won it last year and that's happened year
after year after year after year so it gives we talk about the draft
giving hope and this gives hope every single year and you see the eight teams here that were last in
their division uh last year and a lot of them there was there was injury issues with the Cincinnati
Bengals and LA Chargers or a lot of teams were just bad okay you know Panthers, Commanders,
Cardinals, Patriots were pretty good but their offense really really stunk and that that list
is actually sorted.
The Bengals are at top because they are plus 150 to win their division.
They are behind the Ravens.
And then all the way down are the Patriots,
who are plus 2,500 to win their division in the AFC East.
And that's probably because the AFC East is a very, very hard division.
Why are the Panthers above all those teams?
Well, because a lot of people say the NFC South is the least hard of the divisions.
And it wouldn't be completely shocking,
even though the Panthers were the worst team in the league last year.
But there is a good chance, Pat, that at least one of these teams
is going to go from worst to first in their division this season.
Okay, I can't wait to see which team it is.
Is it the Bears?
Huh?
I don't think so.
But I think they're going to be good.
Is it the New England Patriots, huh?
All right, all right.
Let's talk about real ones.
The Bengals is the easy one.
Well, that's because Joey B's back, and I was listening to him talk on the pivot.
Sounds like Joey B's ready to go.
Oh, yeah.
For sure.
This is a mature, I think, calloused Joey Burrow at this point.
And very, very pumped to see how they figure out the Jamar chase,
and we just assume that will.
Maybe.
I have no idea.
If they can get T. Higgins' proper photo on NFL.com on the roster,
maybe that will help out too.
Yeah, they have a wrong photo.
How many years?
Fifth year.
Very good in all those years.
Could it be the Carolina Panthers?
Well, new coaching staff, new everything down there.
Same old David Tepper, but knew everything else.
Well, they have a term.
Well, a video hit the internet yesterday of, you know, we see it on Hard Knocks.
Obviously, we hear stories from guys that played in the league.
There's a rookie show.
You know, whenever you're a rookie on a team, you go to the front, say your name, signing bonus, and then you sing a song.
And you either get your ass booed out, or it's like, okay, we don't hate that guy.
Now, middle of training camp,
everybody's miserable with normally a tough crowd.
Head coach of the Panthers said,
I'm a rookie here, aren't I?
He signed up for it.
Whoa.
Yep, here it is.
Dave Canales, I'm the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
No signing bonus.
Ah!
Small team meeting man.
Rise up this morning.
Smile at the rising sun.
Three little bursts.
To sing on Northwest.
Singing street songs. Sing on my northwest wing Singin' sweet songs The melody's pure and true
Singin'
Please don't cut my ass from this team
Somebody sing it now.
Singin' don't worry
About a thing
Come on, come on.
Cause every little thing Gonna be alright Come on, get in there.
Love it.
I don't know.
They got after it.
This could have been their first meeting of the day.
Wake up, coach.
Wake up, coach.
Now, he's a veteran of the game, obviously.
Been around a few training camps.
Always want to pick a song that others know.
Yeah.
Okay?
Because if you bring enough energy and hype, they will help you out.
Sure.
Now, if you go up there thinking that you are, let's say, you know, Bob Seger.
Okay.
You know, and think you can write your own song, which I've seen before.
Sure.
Crushed, I bet.
I've gone up there and thought that we were in the middle of like, you know, spoken word.
Yeah, slam poetry.
It's like, hey, that's not, that's not what we're, hey.
Some energy.
Yeah, we need, this sucks what we're doing right now.
Okay, everybody's tired.
Everybody's sore.
You're new here.
We'd like to learn about you.
Do the song and dance.
Everybody else has done the song and dance everybody else has done the
song and dance and move on we had there was an era there and i i assume that era is over because
we get a glimpse into chicago bears where we had four or five guys who thought that telling their
story as a poetry as a poem was going to be a banger. And I'll tell you what, I've never felt more uncomfortable.
We don't care.
Not at all.
We don't care.
Not at all.
Hey, you should hear his story.
Hey, why don't you tell him your story?
Get up there.
Shut up.
Get up there.
It was so uncomfortable.
I like the fact that it feels like Roma Dunze.
Oh, yeah.
And this particular generation, I saw them.
Canadian offensive lineman.
Rips his pants off.
Kind of understands the entire gig.
Listened to Rome last night with Chris.
Chris Brown.
I forget the name of the song.
Chris Brown.
Go Bob.
Kiss Kiss.
Okay, with Chris Brown here.
Look at Roma Dunze bring it to the team here.
That kiss kiss in a mind she fantasized about getting with me.
With energy. They hating on me.
They want to diss this.
Cause she mine is so fine.
Thick as can be.
I'm a country boy from Tappahannock.
The A is where I reside.
So I'm starting to understand.
And see this band and the hanging.
I'm like a bandit.
Like, like a bandit.
Bandit.
Uh.
Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. Woo. bandit. Bandit. Oh. If you've been in love. Woo. Never give me.
Woo.
My seats.
Woo.
You'll never see me.
Woo.
Got it.
Yeah, that is the perfect.
Hey, Rome, way to go, bub.
Well done.
So with Rome doing this, Caleb looking the way he's looking, Jalen Johnson doing his
thing, DJ Moore getting up screaming, I love football, and Ibraflues being a defensive
like accountability culture.
Why not the Bears?
And with the way Canales hit that tune
early in the morning.
That's a team meeting down there?
I don't know. I didn't like much about
that.
The team meeting room didn't look great.
If that wasn't the head coaches,
that's the kind.
Tomato, tomato, tomato.
But to your point, I'm glad to see us coming back around with the players, getting energy.
You got to obviously have energy.
You got to have some confidence.
But you got to get to some good ad-libs.
Once you get the ad-libs, the teams are brought in, then you get to the chorus.
Okay, now we're good.
Then we get out of there.
One chorus, you get out of there.
Ain't no mountain high.
Ain't no valley low.
You just, you don't even have to do much
there you just deliver a little bit of energy at the beginning everybody yep bang in on that song
and everybody knows the song too you know some songs are uh i'll say culturally dividing sure
you know and uh sometimes you'll see like a group of offense alignment you know that all have
You know, and sometimes you'll see, like, a group of offensive linemen, you know,
that all have massive jaw in there.
Yeah, one of them went up there and sang,
I wish I should have been a cowboy.
And I'll tell you, there was a lot of people in the room that did not know what it was.
And then in the back of the room, I should have learned to rope and ride.
Coaches, no lie, coaches. Yeah, this is it. But that's ride No lying coaches, man.
Yeah, this is it.
But that's the beauty of football, man.
That is literally the beauty of football.
And I think you can learn a lot about a team whenever you see those clips.
Legitimately.
I think you can learn about the culture.
I think you can learn about how they feel about each other.
I think that's a very important part on if you're going to have success or not, too.
And that's why this Hard Knocks thing, man.
Chicago. We'll talk to Ibrafl not, too. And that's why this Hard Knocks thing, man. Chicago.
We'll talk to Ibraflux, obviously, here in a bit.
But it's like, is Green Bay a little bit worried?
Because Matt LaFleur said, in the wide receiver room,
every time I'm pulled, I don't have a number one or whatever.
I want to vomit.
I want to absolutely vomit whenever people keep bringing this up to me.
What does he mean by that, Ty?
And how do you feel about the conversation that I didn't even know was taking place around the Green Bay Packers is they don't have any wide receivers.
It's like, so this is the conversation every year?
Or do we forget that all these dudes are like in their first and second year and are dogs
and have proven to be dogs and have played in a lot of very important games
and have kind of already matured?
I guess they're just not household names.
Is that why?
Yeah, I suppose.
I think it's just the way the NFL is right now
with how much certain receivers are getting on their contracts.
Like, you look, I mean, like, yeah,
the Packers don't have, like, a $30 million to $35 million guy
on their roster, but they're, like, legitimately 5 to 6 deep.
Like, it's actually going to be very interesting to see, like,
which cuts they make because they have a bunch of guys.
Like, even last year, like, in Week 18 the bears and and this game against the vikings
like they were bringing guys up from the practice squad who ended up having like six catches and
scoring touchdowns like they have guys who they'll rotate every year but yeah they're super young
romeo dobbs i think would be like the the number one guy if you had to say that yeah exactly most
targets but jayden reed was unbelievable uh last year christian watson if he can stay healthy has like the attributes to be a
number one guy but it doesn't matter i mean they're like they jordan love was very good at
spreading the ball around to everyone last year and i think that's actually like when when rogers
left like that was kind of what hampered him a little bit was the year with Devontae. It was basically like, hey, if Devontae doesn't have
12, 13 catches a game and two touchdowns, we're not getting much
production from anywhere else. Last year, it was like death by a thousand
cuts. You'd have four different guys who'd have five or six catches
and that's why they were so successful. In terms of just the Bears and everything,
listen, Jordan Love had one possession last week.
He threw two passes.
He threw a 65-yard touchdown.
To who, though?
You don't have anybody?
Dontavian Wicks, who is a guy who, yeah, no one's talking about,
but that's what D-Bot was saying.
Like, hey, if this guy's going to be their third or fourth receiver,
he's going to get a lot of favorable matchups this year.
So I think they're in a perfect spot.
Yeah, you obviously would love to have a guy like justin jefferson yeah but i did see that it wasn't a like the pin i don't know a little behind him i don't know
turn his shoulder i don't know that was kind of kind of writing the number oh you said he
looked to say look to safety off there oh he was worried he couldn't put it in between his safety
that's a dot so That's a dot.
So, no, I wouldn't say the Packers are too worried.
But, yeah, they definitely don't have, like, a bona fide number one receiver.
But they have a bunch of guys who I think your Packers fans are comfortable on third down.
Like, hey, this is a guy who can definitely go and get them a first down.
So, no, not worried.
But, obviously, like, you look at Chicago's receiving room and, like, and like it is stacked with like household names and guys we know but i i assume that the packers are kind of going to
make that jump this year with several of the guys that they have yeah let's go through uh obviously
jordy yep donald yep davante james johnson there for james jones excuse me there for a little bit
cob randall cobb uh quarterback from k from Kentucky comes out and becomes punt returner,
returner extraordinaire, and third down receiver.
Opening kickoff for a touchdown on his first play in the NFL.
Dog in those eyes.
Yeah.
So cool.
He's got that.
He pierced through your soul.
They really do.
They really do.
What a legend.
Congrats on a great career.
He said he's not done?
I think he officially retired.
He did TV.
Somebody took a TV job or a media job, then they announced his retirement and then he was well
hold i don't remember if it was cobb yeah they announced that he retired and he said hold up
he said i'm taking the tv job but if someone reaches out i'm still open to the idea of playing
all right if you don't play ever again though cob hell of a job hell of a job well job well done for
what you did to uh you know the sport as a whole
that whole because you go through the packers aren't known that was the big conversation about
aaron yeah it's like when was when did you ever spend a first round pick on a weapon you know
guys are first rounders because they run four fours and they run four threes and they're big
that's like a lot of the reason that people are up there. If you are big, fast, strong, doesn't matter how, you know,
like great your college season, going to have to be good.
But if you get to that combine and you just, what is this?
You're probably going to get taken more early than the other,
just because the coaches think they can get the best out of you.
That size, that speed, can't coach that, let's do that.
So that's why the conversation of them never spending a first rounder on a weapon was a question but it seems like the
green bay packers have eyes on who can become a good quarter or wide receiver and spend their
assets other ways and develop them it's like that's kind of been the packers since the beginning
oh yeah and they've always found the guys and like davante adams you know coming out where he was in
the draft like he wasn't a guy that was expected to be like a Jamar Chase coming out but the wide receivers they come in kind of
all different shapes even Justin Jefferson like he didn't run a 4-3-40 he didn't do anything
special at the combine but obviously he's been productive and to the point about the package
receivers you all you you do want a guy to ultimately emerge and be like okay this is the
go-to guy that we want in the big timetime situations. But to your point, like he spreads it around.
So that's tougher on the defense when it's third and five and we can't say,
all right, one double Devontae, we take him out, make somebody else beat us
when you have all these different weapons.
And you have a quarterback who's willing to throw to everybody.
So now you have the receivers and the effort on every route is going to be full speed
because they want to take advantage of every target.
So I'm excited about this really second year with Joy Love
and his wide receiver crew.
How are the floor's eyebrows this year?
Good?
Pinpoint.
So sweet.
Really?
I mean, that graphic with the shades he had on, holy shit.
Not hair out of place.
He is just so.
Oh, yeah.
He's a good-looking cat.
He is.
He is.
And he looks so cool on a sideline when he's getting the crowd.
I don't love that, but, you know. But you live the crowd. I don't love that, but, you know.
Go!
But you live with that.
I don't love that, but you live with that.
I mean, the crowd gets good.
Oh!
Is this this year's headshot?
Look at the hairline.
That's straight out of training camp.
Look at this guy.
Perfect tan.
I know.
Man, he got some cool coaches in the NFC North.
Talk about floos and that.
Obviously, MCDC.
They talked about that in Hard Knocks with the barber, the whole thing. The whole song and that. I see MCDC. They talked about that
in Hard Knocks
with the barber,
the whole thing,
the whole song and dance.
His hair looks very cool.
He looks...
Showed him a photo
of Ryan Reynolds.
Said, hey,
make it happen, bitch.
And to the barber's credit,
he did.
We didn't expect it.
Nope.
We did not expect it.
Did you see RG3 yesterday
apologizing to his barbers
in Florida and in Texas
because of the croissant picture
and his French barber?
What happened with his... I saw the croissant picture and his French barber.
What happened with this?
I saw the croissant photo.
Did not see the apology.
Yep.
So I saw the croissant.
Everybody saw the croissant photo.
Yeah.
Everywhere.
That thing was huge.
That was a big croissant.
I didn't see it. What was he doing with it?
So him and his lady were eating the largest croissant I've ever seen from both ends.
And I think they were trying to do the noodle.
Yeah, Lady and the Tramp.
Lady and the Tramp.
Yeah, Lady and the Tramp. Oh, they were going from the ends, not from the middle? Yeah, they were going from both ends. And I think they were trying to do the noodle. Yeah, Lady and the Tramp.
Oh, they were going from the ends, not from the middle?
Yeah, they were going from the ends, which I think Lady and Tramp,
once again, that is how that whole thing works.
That's correct.
But because they're in France, they did it with the largest croissant of all time.
Huge.
Honestly, could you imagine putting some eggs in that?
Oh, man.
With some bacon.
Cheese and bacon in there.
Nutella.
Oh, my God. Stuff it. And run that thing thing that's the photo right there that is a photo and nobody really complimented the size of the croissant in the
bakery that made it over there in france nobody really talked about the great views in the
background all anybody to talk about is the way rg3 was shoving that croissant into his mouth
impressive well that's the thing i think that was that was the eagerness to get the croissant in there.
I think there was a lot that was taken out of it.
There was a lot of memes, you know, obviously taking place.
What nobody noticed because of the croissant was hair.
Not like that is not, you know what I mean?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
It's like you got a big cut.
Yeah, I didn't notice this either, but I guess some on the internet did.
And certainly were loud about it.
So then RG3 said he apologized, one, to his barbers, because his barbers were taking shots on his shit.
Sure, really?
His barber was like, it was a French barber.
What is that?
So now he is all the way back, which is great, because, yeah, here it is.
Oh, nice.
This is the barber.
The barber was actually holding the scissors behind him.
Okay.
Telling him, put it up.
Tell these people.
Yeah.
Apologize.
Now.
I'm happy he's got it figured out.
Good sort of.
Good fade makes you feel good.
Oh, yeah.
Without a doubt.
Changes the game.
I bet you Ibrafalus's mindset is so much different with that fade.
It's when they started that run at the end of the season.
Potentially.
Legit.
Then he's got the Maestro's Roman Reigns beard going, which seems to be the go-to for beards right now.
If you can grow one of those, you really
do. I saw a fucking
big one.
But like
properly. Like Joey Sly.
Yeah, I saw one like Joey Sly in the wild.
And I'll tell you, it is like
wow. Are you
like, do they
straighten that?
Yeah, take a comb.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, for sure.
Like, Gumby's got an incredible beard.
Remember, his was getting long.
It was.
And we all thought, kind of Amish right now.
And he even thought that as well and kind of tightened that thing up.
But there's some people that have those big, burly ones.
Thick.
Is Iberful who's going to grow a playoff, like a season?
He should.
I don't know, because does that change his coolness if he does change his beard? I don't know.
Speaking of coolness, we need refs to have better
eyes. For sure.
Can't be having refs just
blatantly miss things that they're standing feet away
from. Especially now. Especially right now.
Well, maybe now is the time to actually
miss it because it is training camp. Everybody's getting
better. Sure. There is video
surfacing from Baltimore
Ravens camp. i believe the video that
we are using is destroying yeah donald okay shout out absolute dog in the kicking community
hopefully he's healthy with the injury that he sustained in the ufl and i'm bummed that he didn't
get a chance to showcase uh for the team and inevitably what happened continuing to give back
to the football world they love destroying he was at baltimore ravens camp and uh justin tucker
gonna go down as a goat uh when it's all said that already is hits the cleanest best ball anybody has
ever seen the the most made kicks of all time just right down the middle and there's no questioner
68 yards in practice let's see if the old man still got it. Tucker hits it. There's somebody returning him back.
A little disrespectful.
Wow.
Returner says good.
Right ref says good.
Left ref says no good.
Hold on.
Really?
Are we sure about that?
So you watch it back again, and then all of a sudden it's like,
how do you tell if it's good or not?
Well, you stand right underneath the upright, and you keep an eye on it.
Clearly.
Okay?
You keep an eye on it. The you keep an eye on it the player boom i mean yeah that's obviously good so field goal so justin tucker absolute beast absolute beast still got it love it keep going tuck you're the absolute man
and he can sing he's an opposite that's right multi-talented individual big time obviously a
beast but the ref on the right side love it love that you saw that that was good player originally that's good he's celebrating
his teammate here justin tucker then as soon as he turns around he's on the defense tucker's on
the offense sees the ref he goes no good he goes up well yeah you're right no good no no good in
there so you know he's on defense side tucks on the offensive side we can't be having rest miss
that though no i mean that's you know? Well, I mean, that
ref needs to stick to his guns. Thank you.
To a training campus floor.
Boom, you failed the test.
But that's what we've been talking about
whenever we need a ref
pool. Yeah. Because I don't know.
If this guy, who cannot...
I mean, come on. I mean, that's
six inches away from him.
Now, he'll say the middle upright is in the way was like well then look at the other person who
has it right you got a teammate over there you know and they immediately go nah i don't know
i mean it's right in front of you i might not be able to that's no good it'd make that anyway 68
yards no way no so as they they're relying on looking in his eyes like there's no way yeah
blinked all right yeah don't even have to this. We know what's going to take place.
We need that to be fixed before regular season
because if we got guys making 68-yard
field goals and then they're saying
it's not good, is that even reviewable?
It better be.
That would make sense for the chip and the ball
deal. I feel like that'd be a very
you put one on the upright too then
or map the upright
and then boom. We'll never get one of those wrong
ever again. The ref
closest to us was way worse. He's
going to be in a game this year and see something and know
what he saw and then because he gets
peer pressured, he's going to change
his call. Yeah, we don't like that either,
huh, Tom? We don't like that either. No, I think the ref
closest... I don't know which one's
worse because you got to see two feet
from you, but you also saw
it go over, gave the good,
and then were like, hey, your friend said no.
He just rolled over?
That guy's probably done a lot of drugs in his life.
Guess what? Teams are not allowed to review
if a field goal or an extra point was made or missed
if the ball goes over the uprights.
Hey, Rog! Can't have that one.
No. Can't have the left upright one
ever doing it. That'd be an NFL record. Yeah. Bingo. Can't have the left upright one. It's embarrassing. Ever doing it.
That'd be an NFL record.
Yeah.
Bingo.
And that's the tough one when it goes over the top.
That's the tough one when it goes, you know, come on now.
I was on a sideline beat for the Boca Raton Bowl.
Sure.
Ah.
Good bowl.
Prestigious bowl.
Boca Raton is a beautiful area.
Beautiful.
What did we say?
Got a room at the
boca raton club or something yeah it was awesome it was right on the ocean yeah that wasn't the
hotel that was booked for the job no but as soon as western so yeah bingo as soon as we heard
ashtray outside cockroach inside biggest upgrade of all time end of season i'm i'm i'm not i'm not
fucking doing this i'm gonna go and then i saw pictures on my phone of this Boca Raton glow.
I'm like, I'm going there.
Let's go.
How much is it?
Very pricey.
Sure.
Very, very pricey.
That's Boca, baby.
For good reason, though.
I mean, that was maybe the most beautiful place I've ever stayed for work ever.
For sure.
Anyways, do the Boca Raton Bowl.
I'm bored.
I'm a silent reporter.
Not allowed to talk really
i have to like hit a button ask for permission to speak did not know that's what i was signing
up for whenever i did it like just on it so i literally the one time i took i went out with
the refs whenever they did a kick like with my microphone live game just walk out and do the
thing and then i realized like not as easy like not, not as. You can tell. There is, like, a weird.
It's a weird.
Because if you're off just a little bit, then you're staring.
And then if you look out this way, then you're looking, like, this way.
In the football, for the uprights, if it's directly over, no good.
But if it's a third on the inside, it's good. So, like, those ones that are above the uprights, I do not envy these refs.
With that being said, can't be missing layups.
No.
Not at all.
Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen,
a man who's been setting the tone for the sports conversation for the last 30 years.
He's in two broadcasting Hall of Fames.
Do we know which ones they are?
No, but we know they're super important.
Yes.
Because this guy accepted the nod,
and he wouldn't accept anything if it wasn't absolute class.
Host of Get Up, Jets diehard fan, ladies and gentlemen,
Mike Reber.
How are you, bud?
I've been dreading this call.
From the moment Hassan Reddick demanded
a trade, I have said,
oh, I'm going to hear from McAfee on this thing.
I'm not going to lie to you.
I thought this bet would at least make it
to the trade deadline.
The idea that Reddick is not
going to show up is a the most ludicrous miss by any team i've ever heard of yeah this is new a new
low even by jet standards um and be just a terrible way for me to lose a wager before it even begins. Okay.
Thank you.
I'm pumped.
I'm excited.
Yes, partially, you know, a victory lap as we continue to go with this big brain of sport.
But speaking of big brain, is there none of those?
Like, what happens?
Because you just talked about how this is the dumbest thing maybe in Jets history, and the Jets have done a lot of stupid things.
But like, doesn't this feel kind of, I don't want to say Bush league because that would be very rude, but it is amateur. Doesn't
this feel like kind of an amateur situation to take place, especially with the whole world right
now at this point in time. Now, maybe not when the Reddit trade was taking place, but at this
point in time, because of IUK, everybody knows like, got to get this deal done before the trade
takes place. Before you give anything up, you got gotta at least know it's gonna happen how does that slip through the cracks and like honestly has this happened more than
i can recall as a person who's been around sports for a long time in covering i mean the explanation
that i'm constantly being given is that reddick told someone whether it was joe douglas or someone
else if you make the trade yes i'll show up and we will negotiate, but I will be there
to do it. And now has changed his mind or gone back on his word or whatever other way you want
to look at it. And I guess if there's a lesson in all of this, it is that a gentleman's agreement
doesn't really count for much when we're dealing with millions and millions of dollars. It would
be like someone trading for
Jamar Chase right now. Ayuk is actually a better example because Chase has two years left on his
deal. It would be like someone trading for Ayuk right now and then being surprised that he wants
a new contract or he's not going to show up. It's inexcusable. And the Jets can say anything they
want about it. And I still have not given up hope that
Redick will eventually show up because at the end of the day if he wants to get paid anything to play
professional football this year the only place he can do it is with the Jets so I still hold out
hope that he will show up but either way it is a terrible look it is a terrible embarrassment
for a franchise that just continues to be unable to get out of its own way
yeah i mean shots to the foot are at an all-time high for the jets it seems like for a team that
doesn't an organization i guess that doesn't have a lot of foot left to shoot through nope you know
over the decades of this entire thing and we assume the reddick situation will get figured
out and get sorted and we hope it definitely works out but has this changed anything and you know Sala and Aaron have both come out and said like we'd love to have him
here but not a distraction me and D-Butch both kind of agree because nobody's seen him nobody
has felt him nobody knows what his energy is in the practice locker room it's not like anybody's
missing out on it like they don't know like nobody knows in the building so I don't think it's a
distraction I do just think it makes the organization look bad.
Do you agree with that?
Yes.
It can't be a distraction.
None of them have met him.
Let the record show that if he ever shows up,
he and Aaron Rodgers will have to introduce themselves to one another
because unless they've met at a Pro Bowl,
I have no proof they've ever been in the same room at the same time.
So the distraction.
I think here's the thing, Pat.
I don't care if it's a distraction they need the player the jets the jets brought in an undrafted
rookie okay a kid named bryce huff and they developed him into a star he had i think the
best pass rush win rate in the entire league last year whatever it was he was unbelievable
the jets let him walk philadelphia signed Jets let him walk. Philadelphia signed him.
They let him walk out of the building and instead traded a third-round pick to bring back Hassan Reddick.
So they could have just kept their own guy
and paid the guy they developed.
So they have lost the guy who was their best pass rusher last year.
So it doesn't mean...
Yeah, but this guy's going to be good.
So good.
This guy's going to be so good. Leader. This guy's going to be so good. Reddick is's gonna be good so good this guy's gonna be so good
leader this guy's gonna be so good he's gonna be good well that's my point so they need the player
it doesn't make any difference if this is a distraction they need the player now first of all
now another thing i would mention is the jets have drafted a ton of pass rushers the last few years
they drafted jermaine johnson in the first round they drafted will They drafted Jermaine Johnson in the first round. They drafted Will McDonald IV in the first round. The fact that they still felt they needed to go out and
make a trade like this suggests they aren't thrilled with what they've gotten from those
first round picks. They also can't, the reason that they're not signing Hassan Reddick to a
long-term deal is because they have so many good young players they're going to have to sign soon.
They're going to have to sign Sauce Gardner and garrett wilson and breeze hall and all these other guys so they are really stuck they
don't want to give him a long-term deal they somehow convince themselves or he convinced them
that he would show up and this wouldn't be a problem when here we are august 14th it is a
significant problem yeah i mean significant problem with no end in seemingly excited especially with
what you're laying out about having to pay all the rookies in the future.
I think there also goes into play, like, who's going to be there next year if they don't win a Super Bowl?
Yeah.
You know, if they don't have success this year, who's all going to be there?
Like, is this coming from top down?
Woody's like, we can't.
Joe Douglas, no offense.
Coach Sala, no offense.
Like, I have no idea who's going to be leading the ship
whenever it comes to next year.
So can you pay money into this?
I don't know if this is going to be next year's vision.
So there's a lot at play here.
And it feels like Hasan Reddick has been to Japan.
He's been to a press conference.
And it seems like he's going to end up on another team.
Maybe the Colts.
Maybe come to the Colts.
But you're going to have to get a deal done beforehand.
Obviously, I think is what we've learned.
Speaking of that, how do you feel about this entire IUK saga?
How do you think this ends?
Because me, newer to the game, you know,
been doing daily sports for what?
Four years, five years now?
We have been.
Yeah.
Four or five years.
Five years.
Five years or so.
We've been doing daily sports.
And, you know, not as versed with all this shit you know so
when something new pops up we have to experience it for the first time and hopefully learn from it
going forward rarely do but you get it in this entire thing the iuk situation feels like it has
been a bunch of mumbo jumbo okay feels like it's been a bunch of bullshit greeny and i i was at the
college football conference uh up at bristol last t, and the boys were covering the IUK situation.
And there was a little bit of a situation where Schefter said he doesn't see there's any chance he ends up at the Steelers.
Then more information came in later.
It was like, whoa, whoa, maybe he is going to be a Steeler.
And I sat back as somebody was speaking for the third hour or so.
I sat back, and I thought to myself, this all feels like a work.
This all feels like a work. This all feels like a work.
Do you think that's what this has been?
What are your thoughts on the IUK situation?
And how do you think it kind of ends?
And who's been driving all the, you think, agent, player, team?
Like who wins from this, you think, from all of it?
Well, so I don't know who's been driving it.
Generally, everything is a work.
Everything that you hear
out there is stuff that is being positioned by someone. Usually, if you can figure out who that
someone is, then you can figure out what their intentions are. It seems to me that Brandon Ayuk
wants everything and he's not in a position to get it. he wants to be a free agent and he isn't one yet so from what i understand new england was willing to basically give him and the 49ers what they want
but he doesn't want to go there cleveland was willing to give him and the 49ers what they want
but he doesn't want to go there the steelers i'm not sure it makes sense for the steelers it
certainly doesn't make sense for washington which is where I think I really wants to go to play with his buddy,
Jaden Daniels.
Why would you give up?
Let's just say a two on a three or something like that for a player that you
can sign next year as a free agent for the same money and not give up anything
to get him.
The only team that it makes sense to do that is a team that is Brandon Iuke
away from winning a championship right now.
So I ask you, is New England that?
Certainly not.
Is Cleveland that?
Maybe, which is why that made sense to me.
Is Pittsburgh that?
That's a really interesting question.
Because while I remain a Justin Fields fan, I have to acknowledge at some point the doubt creeps in.
have to acknowledge at some point the doubt creeps in and the the steelers may have replaced one bad quarterback with two bad
what has happened here um and and but if i'm wrong i would love to be wrong because i am a
justin fields fan supporter believer and and i continue to hope that things work out well for him.
The best thing that could happen there would be if they go out and trade for him.
It would be very unstealer-like, but that feels like the one situation that remains.
To answer all the way back to the beginning of your question,
I don't think he's going to get traded.
I think if he was going to get traded, it would have happened already.
Tone!
Jeez!
Shots!
I initially took offense
to what Greeny was saying, and
then I thought, if anybody
knows bad quarterback play,
it's Greeny, because he's a New York Jets fan.
So I kind of have to respect his opinion on it.
He's got a good eye on that stuff over the years.
He certainly has had a good eye on it.
Look, the only quarterback who has been sacked
more in the last two years than Justin Fields
is Russell Wilson. They have the two most s sacked more in the last two years than Justin Fields is Russell Wilson.
They have the two most sacked quarterbacks in the NFL.
That's not a lie.
They're going to go a lot.
That doesn't matter.
That doesn't matter.
Yeah, and Artie Smith's going to take care of him.
He's on show in the next hour, obviously.
That's all going to get taken care of.
And I know you do have some sort of allegiance, though, to Justin Fields because of your Chicago tie.
Speaking of, Ty has a question for you.
Yeah, Greeny, how are we feeling about uh your beloved wildcats northwestern this year obviously we're seeing all the different photos of their stadium that
they're going to be playing at before the new stadium gets built uh pat has it up right here
he he asked you and i think it's a fair question what would you put percentage wise that they're
actually going to be able to fill this thing up? Sure, early on
people are excited, but
we get to November. Northwestern
is not doing very good. It's
10 degrees and the wind chills
negative 10 coming off the lake there.
How many people are... What's the
average attendance going to be like at this point?
How many games are you going to, Green? That's also a great
question.
I try to go to one game a year.
I try and make it to one game a year every year.
And I will still have – my son is going to be a senior this year,
so I will still have a student there.
So we'll go out there for one game this year to see him for sure.
So let me explain something to the people who don't know the situation
with Northwestern football.
We generally fill the building.
The problem is it is always the fans
of the other team. Got it. Bear in mind, we are playing in the Big Ten. You guys are good hosts.
You got a great host. The stadium is filled with Wisconsin fans, Ohio State fans, Michigan fans,
all these other schools that travel so much better. I actually think that this much smaller
stadium, and I did respond to you guys yesterday on Twitter.
I didn't see you. I must have you muted.
I actually think this is going to be a huge advantage because there won't be as many seats.
Our students will actually be able to fill this place up or come close to it.
So I think Northwestern will actually have something that we have historically never had dating back to when I was a student there in the 80s.
We may have a real home field advantage, which we have never had. I will also add,
we've been pretty good. I mean, over the course of the last 10 years, we made a lot of bowl games.
We had a very good year last year. We made a bowl game last year. And I think we have a very
good chance to be that again this season. We have a new coach everyone is excited about.
He started last year, David Braun, took over under impossible and terrible situation and and
wound up acquitting himself ridiculously well we had a much better season than anyone expected
so i actually think it is an advantage to play in this smaller stadium where the students are
going to fill it up and it will not be packed with michigan's fans and all the other schools
yeah i'm excited to see the purple run a lot oh yeah brother boy it is gonna be chilly oh you
remember when uh minnesota uh the vikings played on what university of minnesota's yeah yes the
gophers and it was the coldest game of all time snowinging. And I assume the wind is wild there, but that one seems to be set up for just like,
who's the kicker in public?
Imagine kicking, yeah.
For a Northwestern.
I mean, there's nothing blocking anything there.
When I was a student, guys, there was a bridge.
So the campus has changed a lot.
Yeah, we jumped off.
There was a bridge right here where that is.
No, like a little bridge.
There was a bridge right here where that is.
No, like a little bridge.
And they had ropes that you could hold on to so that you would not be blown into the lake while crossing it. That is a true story, that on a windy day, you would hold on to the ropes so that you would not be blown into Lake Michigan.
Those ropes were probably right around the 25-yard line
of this new stadium. So on a
windy day, it's going to be like a four-club
win. Let's put it that way.
That's field goal, 25 and in.
That's where field goals are. And I don't think the
bleachers go deeper
than that. And so that
is, man,
kids are going to be trying to win one for
their team. A lot of fake punts.
A lot of fake kicks.
Yeah, a lot of this.
A lot of handoffs.
That ball is seemingly going to be on the ground a lot against Northwestern,
which I think favors that Northwestern team.
Hey, those Wildcats are gritty on the ground.
Let's get back to the NFL.
Big news with the highest-valued franchise in the world at $10-plus billion.
Go ahead, D-Budge.
The most popular, obviously. Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones,
obviously, C.D. Lamb, kind of the motor that gets that offense going,
over 180 targets last year.
Jerry Jones has made some comments.
Hey, you know, he's not missed.
He is missed.
We don't have necessarily a sense of urgency to get this deal done.
I think we all expect the deal to be done at some point before the season.
But what's your take on what's going on out there in dallas right now cd and obviously you know dac you talked about the leverage that he has and then we know mike is
down the road as well look i want to start by saying i have a lot of respect for jerry jones
he's a brilliant businessman he has been um very significant in the unimaginable growth in marketing and popularity of the National Football League since he has been a part of it.
And he is one of the very few owners who are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and he deserves to be.
He bought the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 for $140 million.
They're now worth, as we saw yesterday, over $10 billion dollars which renders what i'm about to
say hard to understand but it is true they are cheap they are a cheap franchise oh they're cash
spending every single season look this up text my boy hembo and have him send you the numbers. Every year, their total cash outlay in players is the lowest in the NFL. It
was the lowest last year, the lowest this year, and projects to be the lowest next year. They don't
spend money. Jerry gets into these poker games by trying not to spend money on players, and he loses
every single time. He desperately needs a different game he needs to
try gin rummy or some other card game because he's not good at poker it goes all the way back to
emmett smith he got he got his clock cleaned in that negotiation it goes back to him chasing
zeke elliott down to cabo it goes back to the way he has mishandled dac into dac becoming at some
point soon the richest football player
that ever walked the face of planet Earth. He should have signed C.D. Lamb a year ago at this
time, and he could have signed him for $25 million a year. Instead, now he's not going to get him for
$35 million a year. He mishandles these situations regularly. And so those are just facts. I don't
say them disrespectfully because he is someone I have a lot of respect for. But those are just facts i don't say them disrespectfully because he is
someone i have a lot of respect for but those are all facts he has mishandled many situations
like this one and they always wind up costing him money of course cd lamb will eventually be there
without him their offense it would be like kevin Kevin Clark said on my show the other day,
they're like the University of Iowa offensively without C.D. Lamb.
That's how bad their offense would be.
Of course they need him.
But it will cost them so much more than it needed to.
He has completely mishandled this situation. You can't have the Dallas Cowboys becoming a team that's unwatchable,
which is what he just basically said right there.
I think Jerry would be okay with not paying C.D. Lamb
and still winning 10 games this year, winning the division.
I think he'd be okay with that.
Do you think they win 10 games without C.D. Lamb this year?
No, I'm just making a comparison.
He's an Iowa fan, so you buried Iowa there.
Oh, I see what you mean.
No, listen, Iowa wins a lot of football games.
I'm not knocking it.
But, you know, it's not scintillating to watch, right?
We all understand offensively they're not the greatest show on earth.
For the purists.
For the football lovers.
For the football purists.
Speaking of football lovers, before we let you go,
what are your thoughts on the new kickoff? What are your thoughts on the new kickoff what are your thoughts on new kickoff and the hawkeye
technology i guess just both of the brand new it's going to take a lot of getting used to
by the way the the the field goal that was miscalled by justin tucker that you were showing
right before i came on we need to look more closely into that the rule that you put up on
the screen said that what is not reviewable is whether the ball was above the upright.
It did not say whether it was above the crossbar.
That better be reviewable.
Interesting.
Because God help us if a Super Bowl is decided or a playoff game is decided because they get this wrong.
If the ball is above the upright, which means it's all the way up.
Pat is a kicker.
You obviously know what I'm talking about.
The upright are the two things that go up like this.
If the ball is above that,
then that's a little bit more of a judgment call.
This is not a judgment call.
This is something that can easily be determined
by instant replay.
And if that's not reviewable,
and I will admit, I don't know if it is or it isn't,
but if that's not reviewable, and God will admit, I don't know if it is or it isn't, but if that's not reviewable,
and God help us, a playoff game has
decided that one of those being
wrong. Hey, that would be on the
Today Show. That would be on, that would
make the, you know, because
I think you told me one time,
I forget what it was, there was some rule or something
that happened that somebody,
I forget who it was, somebody that's in the sports media world
was like, the NFL doesn't love being on like the Today Show and things for things that
are just like, because that's a bunch of people that aren't sports fans
learning about their league and it kind of looking not great.
Like when you're on the Today Show for the billions of dollars of charity,
philanthropy, obviously good, but whenever it's like ineptitude,
which that would be, could you fathom if that happened?
That would be everywhere. That would be if that happened that would be every that
would be the biggest that would be talked about it's like the worst call in history in history
yeah we need to confirm that because the rule you guys popped up correctly said upright um i don't
know about whether the crossbar did it say uprights or upright i can't remember now but it
popped up right before i came on because Because if it said upright, singular,
they could be talking about the entire
metal structure. If they
said uprights, then they could mean
specifically the two things
that are going up. I mean, just get it right. Look up
and get it right. Yeah, I'm
actually interested in the answer
now. I don't know. Teams are not allowed
to review if a field goal or extra point was made
or missed if the ball goes over the
uprights. Okay, so that's over
the uprights. That's above the height
of it. Because they just assume they could tell.
But I guess it could be considered over
now because the uprights
are where it is. So you probably couldn't review that.
Oh, what a technicality
that would be. Oh, and then the ref would have
to... Oh, that guy.
Yeah.
So, uh... I quit. would be oh and then the ref would have to oh that guy yeah uh so uh i quit yeah game is over on the jumbotron up there if that was if that was the home team that obviously
misses that throwing throwing trash and bottles and stuff onto the field right dude because the
the stadium replay people would slow-mo, just like
destroying, slow-mo
that thing. Okay, so we're saying
in the reaction for any other play, it's like,
oh, come on, and then they move on.
We're moving on. Sorry about it.
That, at the end of a game, can't have it.
Can't have it. Alright, you know what we can't have?
More Mike Greenberg.
Hold on, hold on. From the rulebook.
Field goal or try attempt.
Whether a field goal or try attempt cross above the crossbar and inside the uprights is
reviewable, but only if the crossbar crosses the plane of the goalpost.
Thank God.
All right.
Hey.
We're good.
There we go.
We're good.
That ref can be that terrible and we can move along.
Now, I've heard that ref makes other good calls.
This is just not, you know, bread and butter.
That's why he's working in training camp.
You know who doesn't need any work at anything?
This man at hosting the show.
We appreciate the hell out of you, Mike Greenberg.
It's all the way back, so football is obviously the topic of discussion,
and we can't thank you enough for allowing us to do this for a living.
The time is fantastic, and it's only getting better.
The weather is kind of broke here in the Midwest.
We're getting a chance to feel a little football weather, a little football air.
We got storylines.
We got players.
We got hard knocks.
Life is fantastic.
We hope you feel the exact same way.
The Talks Table is here at Boston Connor and at Ty Schmidt.
A nine-year NFL vet, host of everything DB, good D, bad D, Darius J. Butler.
Live from Hammer, Don, Ton, is Ton Diggs.
And joining us live from an attic in Ohio is a college football national champion, a Super Bowl champion,
a Ryder Cup winner, and a man who was the all-time leading tackler for the Green Bay Packers,
but also the trailblazer on the Guardian Cap era.
Wore pillows on his helmet before anybody else.
This man never had a documented concussion.
CTE-free, A.J. Hawk.
Yeah.
A.J. Hawker.
Do any of us really know if we're CTE-free?
Well, I actually saw A.B. and Le'Veon Bell talking about that on on the CTE ESPN podcast, I believe.
Excited to hear their answer on that.
He also, CTE ESPN
also reported that
Brandon Ayuk only wants to be a Steeler.
And I will say, CTE ESPN
has been
in the know before.
AB
does know a lot of football people.
He's saying that he wants to be a Pittsburgh Steeler
and will not accept any offer from the 49ers.
We shall see if CTE-SPN is accurate in their reporting.
Have been before.
Have been wrong.
Have been accurate before.
The IU situation is continuing to just cook.
All roads seemingly lead to him going back to the 49ers. This is on
Reddick stuff, though. Mike Greenberg
just said, lowest low in the history
of stupidity for the New York Jets. Pretty upset.
He's down the dumps, wasn't he? Bro, he's
a little bummed out, isn't he? Yeah, very.
He's bummed out about it. I don't care if it's a
distraction. We need the player.
That position needs
to be upgraded if we're going to have
any success this year.
We let our good guy go for this guy.
Yep.
And this guy doesn't want to be here.
So now Greeny obviously has never been in a locker room, and that's not his fault.
His chosen profession that he's incredible about is talking about the locker room.
Distractions in locker room do matter.
That does matter.
And you definitely want a team to be, we all want to be same direction of course
hey everybody anytime any unit is cohesive it is gonna be better at
whatever it's doing football is no exception especially with how hard
physical and what you have to do for each other alongside of each other not
that it's the only job that does that but it is a job that does that so a team
being together is a massive part of them having success, them being terrible, or them being meh basically every single year.
So distractions matter.
This is not a distraction to that locker room because they probably think it's hilarious.
I'd assume the locker room thinks it is just as hilarious and ridiculous as we do.
Right, AJ?
I'd assume that is how they are viewing it.
And when he gets there, it'll probably be like a hilarious.
Okay, good to see you, man.
Happy you're here.
You know, we thought this was going to be sooner.
Like, this is not a distraction, I think, locker room wise.
So I think that's good news, at least for the Jets.
Yeah, because he hasn't really been in the locker room.
So how can it be much of a distraction for them?
Yeah, I'm sure they have to answer some questions about his situation,
but they don't really know.
We don't know who knows anything.
But is there a deadline for any of this for Ayuk, for Hassan?
Is there any kind of deadline where they're going to make a decision
one way or the other?
The teams are saying, hey, we've got to do something.
Deadlines drive decisions is what they say.
San Francisco 49ers will let that thing ride.
Oh, yeah.
Right?
They'll let that thing ride.
But they want him back to play for them, though.
They want him getting some reps at least sometime before the regular season,
right? Certainly. You certainly
would want that, but I think they have proven
they'll let it ride. They'll do that.
Hassan Reddick has proven that he
will get me
out of here. Will it hurt the Trent situation, though,
with the San Fran? Isn't that kind of
the number one thing that they're worried about?
Or are they changing now and going back to
IU? So, depending upon who was leaking the information of stuff and how it was,
it could be other teams, could be agents, could be other players' agents,
could be so many different parties.
Eight to nine.
Not the Niners.
They don't leak information.
Never have, never will.
Never have, never will.
Nope.
Only organization in the NFL.
They won't leak it.
What do you mean, Tone?
I was just told one day, but I can't remember who it was.
It was Adam Sheffield. It was Adam Schefter.
It was yesterday.
Whoa, just yesterday?
Did he double down yesterday from last week?
Niners don't leak information.
I think that was a triple down, maybe a quadruple.
Right there is Bubba Gumpino, one half of the Hammer.
Darn.
Cowboys.
Thanks, Gumpy.
Rocking a – he's not in Hammer downtown.
He's not in Hammer downtown.
He's not.
He's in in Hammerdown. He's not in Hammerdown. He's in the back.
He's wearing a 1996 David Beckham England tarp with the collar popped.
And he looks cooler than anybody.
He should be the next representative from Canada, USA, or Australia from the way it sounds like it works.
In the breakdancing.
He looks so cool today. B-Boy Gump. This is B-Boy In the breakdancing, he looks so cool today.
This is B-Boy Gump.
Gump, you look so cool today.
I just want to let you know that.
Might be my favorite tarp I've ever gotten.
Forget the tarp.
How about the pants?
The cargoes, yeah.
What are they?
They're like baggy cargo pants.
But then they're kind of tight at the bottom.
It is very B-Boy, AJ.
And then I think you got Samb And then he got Sambas?
He got Sambas on?
Nike Dunks.
Oh, okay, Dunks.
He does look like he's good.
Yeah, he's a bod-mon, pal.
Have you learned about that Ray Gunn situation
down there in Australia?
There's a petition of a 15,000 signature saying,
hey, this is all for gays.
Her husband, allegedly, via the petition,
we have not done enough research,
so once again, we have found ourselves in a situation where, allegedly, what is happening in Australia is her husband, B-Girl Ray Gunn, was the coach of the breakdancing team.
Allegedly, there's a relationship with the head of the Olympic Australia team with Ray Gunn.
And then Ray Gunn had to win qualifiers to get to the Olympics.
And I think the people she's friends with were running it, allegedly.
Dr. Gunn.
Allegedly, they were running the events.
And they showcased an Australian woman who she took on in her first round, I do believe.
Holy Molly.
Holy Molly, yeah.
Beat girl, Holy Molly from Australia.
And she was doing, like, actual stuff. You know Australia. And she was doing, like, actual stuff.
You know, like, she was doing, like, the stuff.
She was break dancing.
She lost first round to Regan.
So they're saying the books were cooked down there.
And they're looking for a full investigation into the entire Australian team, Olympic team.
How they manage funds.
Where it's going.
This coach, obviously, conflict of interest. That was the petition we read, where it's going, this coach, obviously conflict of interest.
That was the petition we read and it's certainly stirring some shit.
I think the breakdancing community also rather frustrated from the petition that I read because you made a mockery out of our...
Yeah, you're killing us.
It's the first time it was put into a...
You got no respect now.
And now everybody's like, okay.
The Aussies don't break.
Yeah, not only the Aussies, like this can't be in the Olympics. Yeah, ies don't break. Not only the Aussies.
This can't be in the Olympics.
This is not going to be in the Olympics again.
That is kind of what people started saying.
And then obviously it's not in LA.
And then will it be in Australia?
We'll see if Ray Gunn is able to kind of cook it back in.
There's some real drama around being a Ray Gunn.
How does this happen in the Olympics?
How does it get that far?
For real? I don't know because I was told
that the Olympic Committee
is the good ones. Remember?
It was a couple weeks ago.
Compared to other organizations, the Olympic Committee
is the
one.
They're just ripping a bronze
medal off of Jordan Childs' chest.
Give it back. It's bullshit.
Chopping it up, melting it down. We got potential tomfoolery They're just ripping a bronze medal off of Jordan Charles' chest. They're giving back. It's bullshit. Can't have that.
Chopping it up, melting it down.
We got potential tomfoolery in Australia for the breakdancing position.
Yeah.
How many other sports have all kinds of situations happening?
Round world.
Bingo.
We need a full investigation of everything.
We know shooting is good.
Shooting's okay.
Yeah, we don't need to go into that one.
Yeah.
The way countries are selecting their snipers, I'm sorry, the shooters.
Good job.
Yep.
Once again, we do think the United States of America should be taking alongside the trend that is happening globally.
We should be getting our best murderers, our best killers that our government hires and sends to places.
Jack Carr should potentially be shooting in the next Olympics. Somebody. Jack Carr should potentially be shooting in the next Olympics.
Somebody like Jack Carr should potentially be shooting in the next Olympics.
Somebody that's off the grid, you know, like they did, like old buddy.
Right.
They said his name was Yusuf.
That's not his name.
Fake.
No joke.
There's no way that's his name.
No.
He's definitely got at least one passport with that name on it.
And also, bingo. And that thing's already been burnt. Exactly. Yusuf is his name. No. He's definitely got at least one passport with that name on it. And also, bingo.
And that thing's already been burnt.
Exactly.
Yusuf is so dead.
Yeah.
He's got a new face now.
Yeah, that's bingo.
That hair is completely different.
He probably doesn't rip that face off right after.
Yeah, glasses.
Yeah, right.
This guy's got 20-10.
Has since he was a kid.
Yes.
That is on top of a mask that's on top of his head.
Blonde.
And he couldn't even win the gold because he was too good of a shooter.
He won silver. This guy went to the Paris Olympics as a person that's on top of his head. And he couldn't even win the gold because he was too good of a shooter. He won silver. This guy went
to the Paris Olympics as a
person that doesn't exist
and did something
that it was exactly what he was intending to do.
Be good, but not too good. We can't be
having people sniff around.
Was probably doing some wet work over in Paris
and was just like, ah, fuck it. I'll stop by.
Zito said that
he thinks he read.
Now, once again, this is a legend.
He's an accountant.
So then you start doing the math.
See that Ben Affleck movie?
Yeah, that's probably what Zito read.
If I had to guess, there was probably a picture of Ben Affleck next to this guy.
This is actually who the movie is going to have.
So we do not think that is true, obviously.
Thoughts in Paris for Ben, by the way.
I don't know if you guys have seen him lately.
He's fine. He's about to play Hulk you guys have seen him lately. He's fine.
He's about to play Hulk Hogan.
Don't worry.
He's on the up and up.
That's not real.
There was a video.
I don't know how recent.
Well, there's rumors about the marriage, but there's video of him getting out of a car
or a van with her for a red carpet.
Boy, does he look happy.
Yeah, but isn't that kind of his look?
Yes.
But there's Ben Affleck, and then there's Ben Affleck.
Legend of divorce rumors.
You sound like Dan Orlovsky when he's describing,
there's accuracy, and then there's ball placement.
Well, I mean, there's happy Ben Affleck,
and then there's Ben Affleck, you know,
with the Dunkin' Cup smoking the cig outside with the back tat.
That's the only Ben Affleck I've ever seen.
The paparazzi.
He doesn't like the paparazzi. I get it.
There's Ben on the sauce and there's Ben on the
snake is what Ben's trying to say.
Hey, Ben,
we hope you find your happiness. If you're not happy,
I just assumed that was his thing.
Like, just not happy. I think it is. I mean, that's
kind of a Boston thing. So I just figured he
was just continuing that on forever. I thought that was his
gimmick. And then when I'm watching movies,
I'm like, oh, that's the unhappy guy. And then it's like, that
is his thing. And he'll be happy again because Connor
is right. He's about to win an Oscar for portraying
the Hulkster very soon.
Have they shot that yet? No, he's
going to go full method.
So I think he's going to do... Is he getting all jacked up for real?
He was at the live thing where
Hulkster asked the crowd if he was
the best in the world.
Hulkster's been doing a lot of speaking.
He's pushing at a real American beer, man.
There it is.
Is it a light beer?
I would assume so.
Hulkster can't have a figure like that drinking high-calorie beer.
Hulkster might be able to.
Might have a heavy end to light beer.
Troy Aikman's got his beer.
His beer, I think, is doing good.
Yeah.
I thought beer was out, but now seemingly beer is in.
The light beers are coming back.
IPA stuff isn't around.
IPA, I feel like that's died down a little bit, hasn't it?
That came in strong.
I was never able to really get in on it
because my taste buds
just were like, I don't need to taste everything.
Me too.
I appreciated the amount of passion
that everybody had for beer.
People had home kits.
Oh, yeah.
They were going to breweries.
You mail those 17-ounce bottles, like three of them, to your buddy over in Nebraska,
and then they send you something back.
Yeah, like the Moonshine game has been figured out by the Appalachians.
That has been figured out.
So the homemade booze, I think, is okay, acceptable. You do what you got to do. The homemade booze I think is okay. Acceptable.
You do what you got to do. The homemade beer though
that became uncomfortable because
you had to act like
this might be your calling.
Is this pumpkin pie? It wasn't.
It looks good. Save me
some.
So much of that.
When you order vodka
or whatever, who made this oh this is
shit well the bartender sucks when you're drinking a beer with the person that turned their basement
into a fucking room yeah it's like you gotta like peter calling you have to tell people that oh i
dropped that this might be your calling like so oh no good job bud you got this and i chugged that
thing as fast as possible to get it over with oh yeah oh so good man another you know
well you made it right it's supposed to be like a that was really i think you missed your calling
then i would just kind of skirt out that happened to me four times i was like i'm so i would start
asking if somebody had a fucking their own am i going to be drinking the person's just actual
beer because i'm going to tell them I'm sober. And that was not –
That was a good move.
That was – yeah.
Turns out, Pat, you look like really high right now.
No, I'm sober.
I should have slept for three days.
Tired as hell.
Call him.
Yeah, thanks.
I wish I could drink.
I heard yours is better than every – heard you missed your calling.
Did you see any of the hard knocks last night, AJ?
Oh, yeah.
I think – honestly, I'm entertained.
I really am.
I like seeing, like, I don't know.
I like seeing the game footage when you get to hear guys that are mic'd up during the game
and kind of see how that all goes.
Yeah, for instance, like the DJ Moore clip of him saying,
I like football and I love football after getting de-cleated against the Buffalo Bills
in a preseason game, in a preseason game, after getting paid a massive amount of money.
Here's DJ Moore.
game after getting paid a massive amount of money. Here's DJ Moore.
I like football! I like football!
Okay, so you see that, and that is all anybody is looking for to be on their roster,
let alone be one of their superstars.
Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen, is a man who has cultivated his culture seemingly in the Chicago Bears organization
and maybe have the monsters of the midway all the way back.
Fresh-ass haircut, ladies and gentlemen, head coach of the Chicago Bears,
Matty Rufus.
How's it going, guys?
Hey, I saw on Hard Knocks the story with the barber and the whole thing.
Right decision.
You feel that way, too.
You look damn good with the new look, Eberflus.
Well, a lot of people are saying I look like you, so I think I stole the look off of you,
so that's a good thing.
Okay.
Okay.
So that means I look good, too.
So every compliment to Eberfues. Hey, if you could
send those anytime you get them to me, that'd be fantastic. I love the way you are seemingly
running your operation up there in Chicago. Is it fair for us to say that at the end of the year,
your culture seemingly wasn't like fully implemented, but felt like the entire building
was bought into the Eberflues culture
because that's kind of how we were describing it towards the end of the year,
watching your team do what they ended up doing.
Yeah, you know, you look at the end of the year,
I really feel that the guys started to buy into it.
And it was really important that, you know,
the guys just really worked day in and day out, you know,
and that's what it comes down to.
What we do on the grass is what matters, you know, and the execution on the grass and how we work through the course of
the week. And that really started to pay off in the second half of the year. So whenever you add
sweat, right, I think that's who you brought in and then you pay them mightily. I know there was
conversations not by us directly, but on this program and many other programs, it's like, well,
whenever you bring somebody in who hasn't done anything for your team and then you pay them, that could
potentially, you know, ruffle some feathers around the locker room. Instead, it felt like he paid
them and he, like the entire team, like he became one of the pillars of your team. Do you feel that?
And was that a massive move to get to where you guys are now? Yeah, it was a massive move. And
Ryan did a wonderful job with that whole situation. And really, he bought into us in the way we work right away. We're all about respecting each other, working hard, and doing our work and really buying into the partnership you have with your teammates.
and had his best year of his career when he came to us.
And guys were excited for him.
He was very encouraging to other players as he went about his business.
So I think he really fostered those relationships as he went,
and it kind of built upon itself.
Every time we zoom out, you have an incredibly great backdrop, first of all.
I don't know who did the lighting.
Phenomenal stuff.
I mean, absolutely.
This is a 10 out of 10 backdrop right here. This is Damian during COVID yep backdrop type stuff high brace but then up in the top left corner there's
a PTZ just sitting on one of your shelves right there and for those that are that's a pan tilt
zoom camera okay that is controlled by somebody somewhere else they have an actual joystick where
they are that they can control where that's headed where that that's looking. That's NFL Films, obviously with Hard Knocks. What I've learned about your team through this Hard Knocks is like, wait a minute, I'm all in.
Jalen, all your stars seemingly are the type of dudes that you want in your program. That DJ Moore,
I like football. Do you watch Hard Knocks? Did you know he said that immediately after getting hit?
Jalen Johnson, Keenan Allen, the way they're interacting. Are you watching Hard Knocks and seeing that or do you get to experience that on
a day-to-day? It feels like your culture is one of loving football and hard work. And are you
watching Hard Knocks and are you proud of it with how it's turning out? Yeah, you know, we wanted to
just be authentic, you know, in the process. And I told the guys once the announcement came that
we're going to have Hard Knocks. I just said, guys, be authentic, be yourself.
I said, we're already doing the things the right way.
We respect each other.
We work hard.
We've got great relationships in the building, and we honor that.
And just be yourself, and that's going to be good enough.
And the guys have really just done that.
You know, no one's done anything.
They're playing up to cameras and all those types of things.
We're really focused on our work, and our work is getting ready for the first game.
And, you know, I think we're 25 days away from it right now. So, you know, we got every day's got
to count. We got to make make them, you know, and improve every single day. We got a big day
tomorrow with Cincinnati joint practice. So that's what our focus is. Yeah, well, it feels like I
don't know how much of it you get to see or how much you get to say of it. You can tell your
culture is there and it feels like a locker room that i would want to be like i think that's like maybe the biggest compliment you can give
as former player watching hard knocks it's like that feels like a place that i would want to play
in a team that i would want to play alongside of from my version of watching hard knocks thus far
go ahead aj coach uh i don't know if you ever saw the show the real world back in the day where they
would you know plant these cameras in there and a lot of the people, the Miz, the great wrestler
who was in there back in the day, said
sometimes eventually they forget
the cameras are there. Are you at that
point? Are your players at that point? Or do you ever say anything
and you're like, oh man, they're definitely going to use that
next Tuesday? Is this something that
you're still on your mind daily?
No, I really don't. I think
Hard Knocks does a wonderful job of really
staying in the background
and letting us do our business.
And I think they've done a wonderful job so far.
And we have the ability to edit some things if we want to,
and that's been a seamless process.
We have Ted Cruz in here who's part of our PR department,
does a wonderful job with us.
And, yeah, so it's been pretty seamless there.
Man, Ted Cruz hates us. Oh, buddy pretty seamless there. Ted Cruz hates us.
Oh, buddy.
Formerly, well,
not Texas Ted Cruz.
PR Ted Cruz
was who we were talking about. I completely forgot
about the other Ted Cruz. He's got a beard, I see.
He's working PR.
That's the...
Okay.
He's formerly Kansas City, right?
Then he's at Chicago.
A lot of NFL experience.
A lot of NFL experience.
And whenever I say he hates us, that's not true.
He's just like a, he is a guardian of the ship.
You know, like he is.
He's been around NFL a long time.
And the fact that the NFL films are so good at what they do, you know,
we don't need to give out any strategy stuff.
We don't need to ruin any moments.
But I'll tell you, last night, they made a couple superstars in Jalen Johnson, DJ Moore.
And that quarterback of yours seemingly is the right one.
D-Buck got a question for you, Coach.
Yes, it was a lot of shit surrounding Caleb Williams when he was in college.
But I know from the outside looking in, I've just absolutely loved everything I've seen,
especially with hard knocks and behind the scenes.
Saw you sitting with him, kind of going over the refs with him,
seeing him in team meetings.
Just seems like a seasoned vet, even watching him on the field.
Has there been anything that has surprised you so far
about Caleb Williams and working with him?
Yeah, it's been a pleasure to work with him
all the way from the pro day at USC until now.
And what I've noticed about him is that he accepts all challenges.
And we've been challenging him in terms of learning the offense
and leveling up every single chance over the summer every single week that we've been
in training camp now and he's accepted those challenging challenges and he's so he's improving
every single day and now I can start to see him building the relationships and really the continuity
inside the offense as he learns and starting to get more feel for the receivers, more feel for the offense,
and he's starting to really take a hold of that leadership role.
What I saw last night with him talking to Roma Dunzac,
his first preseason game.
So normally I think a fair way of judging a rookie quarterback
in the first preseason is do they look comfortable?
Can they handle the call, the huddle, the snap?
Is there a couple completions? And obviously he did what he did on the field, but then Hardenock showed us
him talking to Roman Dunzey, like, hey, when you run that, I want you to do this. It's like,
this is his first year in that offense too. That's like a 10-year vet quarterback. Like Aaron
Rogers, Garrett Wilson were having that conversation, I think last week on the internet,
everybody was talking about it. It's like Caleb's already having those convos,
and then it came out that he was telling the boys,
clean up the locker room.
It's like, is this a 40-year-old man?
Is this a 40-year-old man in there?
Yeah, I would say that he's very mature for his age.
I think the experiences that he's had in football,
with the NIL and winning the Heisman
and having a lot of that attention, really helped him, you know, to prepare for this moment to be a starting
quarterback, the first pick in the draft. And, you know, and where he is right now,
he's always going to be where his feet is. He's very comfortable in his own skin
and he's very confident in his abilities. And again, we got to play well around him,
you know, receiving core, the protection, the tight ends, the runners, the defense, the special teams.
You know, this guy is a rookie.
We got to play well around him to make his job easier because he's got the
hardest job in the world, which is playing NFL quarterback.
So we understand that as a group and we're doing everything we can to support
him.
Hell yeah. And we appreciate that.
And I think we've all acknowledged that too,
even before the draft and before the pro days
because there was some conversation by some
people in the media, which is always going to happen every single
draft. It's like, this is the worst
spot that Caleb Williams, a
once-in-a-generation guy, can go. You heard it.
We asked Poles if he heard it. He said he did
hear that as well. But then once you
started looking into it, it's like investment
weapons, running
back, proven, offensive line, defense, very very good. It's like investment uh weapons running back proven offensive line
defense very very good it's like this is almost like maybe the greatest position a number one
overall quarterback has been dropped into in some time now i have not done the research on who else
has done it but the way you guys have built that team seemingly is set up for success now speaking
of being set up for success you gotta've got to do good due diligence.
And we've seen you with a new haircut doing some of that on Hard Knocks.
Go ahead, Ty.
Yeah, Coach, we also saw you sit down with Nick Saban.
And, you know, you guys were kind of just talking about different things
with Caleb Williams.
Obviously, you played for him at Toledo.
How heavily do you lean on him for advice?
And also, how much has your relationship
changed with him? Because he seems like the kind of guy who, even though you're a full-grown adult
now, it's still kind of like, hey, you're his player and he's your coach. So do you lean on
him a bunch? And how has you guys' relationship changed over the course of the last 30 years?
Yeah, it's been great. Coach Saban's been one of my mentors, and I have a few
really good ones, you know, guys that are in the College Hall of Fame like Gary Pinkle and,
you know, Coach Marinelli, Coach Kiffin, all those guys that I was with. You know, Coach Saban is
definitely up there, a guy that I've stayed in touch with, and I lean on him heavily
for a lot of things because he is a defensive-minded head coach, and he's worked with
quarterbacks over the course of his career.
And I was really just trying to get him to come up here once he retired.
I said, hey, coach, anytime you want to come up and visit, you know, come on in.
And he had a speaking engagement up here and he stopped by for like three hours.
And we had that talk and it was really good to glean that information from him in person,
talking about, you know, Tua and Jalen and different things
and how he worked with those quarterbacks
and really helped him along in terms of development.
It's going to be about the development phase of Caleb Williams
learning through performance and through experience every chance he gets.
And we've got a lot of these competitive reps against our one defense.
We've got competitive reps tomorrow against Cincinnati in the joint practice,
you know, in these games coming up.
And he has to level up and get better
just by learning through the performance
and the experience every single chance he gets.
And I think that with the offensive coordinator,
we have Shane Waldron and myself
giving him a dual education in terms of,
hey, this is how we operate in the offense,
but also, hey, this is what the rules for the defensive players are, and this is how we can scheme against these things,
is really going to fast forward his education process, I believe, in a really quick manner.
They talk about that with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick as being one of the biggest weapons,
is every Monday he would sit down with Bill. Bill would break down the defense,
the defensive coordinator, where the defense coordinator came from, what the entire scheme is kind of prefaced off of.
And then Tom Brady, obviously, on the offensive side,
was doing his thing with McDaniels and all the boys over there,
but then he was also learning defense.
And we got Caleb Williams doing a TB12 thing already.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Uh-oh.
Uh-oh!
I know you have something here in a matter of moments,
but we have one last question.
Obviously, it's a big talking point around the entire NFL.
Go ahead, Con Man.
Yeah, Coach, biggest adjustment right now for this season obviously
is the new kickoff and kick return have you been looking around the league and trying to pull ideas
from other guys and seeing what other teams are doing or do you feel comfortable at your guys's
strategy and kind of where you're at with it and just hoping that shit doesn't hit the fan you get
one of those phantom safeties yeah I believe that that we're on point in terms of where we are right now,
in terms of the research and what we've done so far.
But again, it's kind of an unknown so far of what exactly is going to happen
in terms of the scheme and scheming up on the kickoff return side of it
and also the kickoff phase of it.
So I believe we're in a good spot.
I believe in our process.
I really believe in our special teams coach, Richard
Hightower and myself, and his assistants are working diligently to get that. We've added more
periods during the course of this training camp so we could take a look full speed and really in
pads to be able to see how you take on these blocks, how you block these players that are so
close to you. And I think it's going to be interesting to see how it develops during the
course of the season. Coach, I don't want to get too much info off you. And I think it's going to be interesting to see how it develops during the course of the season.
Coach, I don't want to get too much info off you.
Two quick things, follow up.
30-yard line being the touchback, are people just going to kick it into the end zone still
like they did last year?
And are we going to see more scrapers, you think, like a linebacker type coverage where,
you know, more layers to the kickoff coverage as opposed to just one flat line?
What are your thoughts on it?
Yeah, I believe we'll see both those things.
I really do, Pat.
I really think that, you know, depending on the returner,
who you have back there, I think you're going to see some more,
you know, kickouts, touchbacks.
But I also believe that you're going to see a lot of scheme try,
you know, with crossing and, you know, having guys live,
pulling the guys out, you know, in terms of who's the safeties and all those things that we've typically done.
But I do think we'll scheme up some things on a kickoff for sure.
All right.
I can't wait to watch.
We appreciate you.
Have a great rest of training camp and continue being a hard-knock superstar.
Tell your barber we said what's up.
And maybe I need a cut.
You know, might be able to help me out.
Ladies and gentlemen, head coach of the Chicago Bears, Matt Eberflus.
Thank you, Matt.
Hey, coach.
People are telling me he looks like me.
I can see it.
When you guys were side by side, I was like, oh, yeah.
I hadn't thought of it.
He's an incredibly handsome man.
I mean, he's what, like 56?
If he looked that good in, you know, 20 years?
No, no.
I look like I'm 56.
Well, that's what I mean.
But also then.
I've looked like I'm 45 since I'm about 16.
That's a good sign. Which has worked'm about 16. That's a good sign.
Which has worked out.
Yeah, it's a good sign.
It has worked out a lot for me throughout the years, you know,
especially with older brother.
Just had a birthday.
Happy birthday, Jay.
August 12th, 1983.
You know, I know his social security number, everything.
Gee.
Face was.
What was it?
What?
I still got it.
I walked in completely.
The only time it didn't work for me Is I didn't know his sign
Remember up in Canada
Yeah but I mean
I don't even know mine
That's crazy
Who knows
I know what it is now
I knew what it was immediately afterwards
And I gave the guy a
Bravo bud
I've used this
I've used this thing a hundred times
I think it's illegal to ask that in Canada
What if I would have said Because i could have dropped uh we're not
getting into it well i actually i i i'm more of a taurus i think yeah because that would have been
the only one that i would have known different error which is mine yeah that they looked at
looked at that i mean my brother's shorter than i am so it's kind of the problem i hit a growth
for two weeks ago what do you want me to do well i use that a thousand times yeah panama city i
actually had two big x's on my hands because bouncers down there during spring break used to
be the root of the root you know barney fife they were the kings they were the kings down there i
give id pulls id looks at it puts it in back, puts two X's on my hand, says, your honor, 21,
have a good time. And I go,
no, I'm not.
And I was already intoxicated, obviously.
So, no, I'm not. Feeling a little
courageous. Guy says, you want me to bring those cops
over right now? I go, yes, I do.
Yes, I do. And you're like, are you sure
you want these cops to come over here right now? I go,
absolutely. Boom.
Birthday, address, social security number, what the parents do sure you want these cops to come over here right now i go absolutely boom birthday address social
security number what the parents do for a living you want me to break it down what were they the
entire thing sign then go back get the thing cops guy i do believe he was good he did hit a gross
and this entire thing because that was the entirety of it brave then i asked god to erase
the x's off my dog obviously the bouncer take him him off. For getting something? He goes, I'm not doing that.
I'm like, did you take him off?
He goes, get your ass out of my car.
So I got escorted into the bathroom to erase them all.
And he said, you're good to go.
I'm like, thank you.
And then we had a night in there.
Spinnaker, I think was the name of the place.
Boy, we had a blast.
You tell him on the way out, gotcha.
My name's Pat.
Ha ha!
All of you. All of you. No, I always try to keep it as professional as possible you don't
want to start too much but if you know everything about the person i mean it's pretty good
locked in there was one time we were actually thinking about trying to just me go because you
can get an identification card and a driver's license so once i learned about that little thing
i was like oh jay give me your driver's license. I'm going to go in and take the picture for the identification
card. So then there's not even
any question. We
both decided that probably, why are we?
Let's not get too greedy here.
Go too far. What is the modern day?
They're probably making fakes.
So good. Buy fakes on the
internet, yeah, everywhere. We don't
think that's a good thing. I mean, it is if you have one
in your friend group every once in a while but nobody should be doing underage anything
okay we stand firmly on that stance and be safe out there but nowadays how does any bouncer know
they had like the scan was the big thing and even when i was in high school it was like hey they got
these fake ids that even when they scan them like you're still good to go yeah i don't know how they
would ever now it's yeah we had to scan at college too like the first week of football camp the seniors like hey this is the
guy's number you go get this it scans it it has the holograms on yeah they used to have like
business cards on what they're able to create i can make your passport if you need it but
don't try tough countries i believe they're developing like a almost like a QR code for IDs that's like with your government
I didn't even think of that being a huge problem I mean there's no way that is regulated no how
could that be regulated I mean these days we've seen the younger generation you can you can kind
of tell sometimes by the eye test like all right there's no way there's some very young looking
I think that was what I learned from college game day the most is like uh i feel like and once again i've looked like i'm 40
for a long time and it's helped me out but it's like they look they look young like kids college
yeah some yeah college they're kids yeah like high school they look very young just kids are
they are they moisturizing at a younger rate what is sun, maybe? Less sun?
I think it's probably because they know so much more about
what they should be eating and not eating.
How much they should be... I think that's helping
society. Not just athletes. We're getting
faster, stronger, better at sports.
I assume humans are also, if they pay attention.
I've seen kind of the opposite, though. We've been on the field
for some of these field passes. We see these teams
running. Oh, yeah. Players.
The athletes.
These D-linemen. D-linemen, line these teams running. Oh, yeah. Players. The athletes. Like, damn. Team.
NFL.
These D-linemen, linebacker groups.
Oh, my goodness.
You see them come out for warm-ups,
and every one of them seems to be 6'5 and above
and just can move like a deer.
It's unreal.
True freshman.
And then you talk to the strength.
Yeah, you talk to strength.
You're like, hey, so the biggest thing I've ever seen on a football field,
what do we need to know?
40 times.
4'8".
Yeah.
That guy runs 4'8".
Yeah, faster than Peyton and Tom Brady, that guy right there.
19.
He's 395 pounds.
Yeah, that's what we're saying.
He's not going to play at all today, though.
Probably won't for the next two years.
Yeah, he's got a chance in a few years.
Yeah, he could be a guy.
He could be a guy.
We'll see.
Yeah, could be.
Yeah, okay.
Why didn't he transfer to West Virginia?
You know, college football, right around the corner.
And we're going to be celebrating the first game, week zero.
Okay, there's only four games.
One of them is Georgia Tech, Florida State, over in Dublin.
College game day is going to be there on Saturday.
On Friday, we're going to be live in Dublin.
Drum roll, please.
On the date of 23-08-24, 5 p.m. local time in Dublin, we'll be live from a pub titled
J.R. Mahon's Yeah JR Mahan
I'd like to thank the entire Mahan family
Who certainly have done all of the leg work for this
And have reached out to us
And told us that this was possible
And that this could happen
And we could do it at their pub
We were not planning on going over there
Was going to do the show live from here
Hop in a bird, get there, do game day
Get on out of there, fly back. But instead, Robert Mahan of the Mahan Family Hospitality Group that owns restaurants in
New York City, Dublin, Irish lad, just has done this entire thing, reaches out and says, hey,
we got a place. We got people that have cameras and everything you could possibly need. We got
the internet and we would love to host you could possibly need we got the internet and uh we
would love to host you lad and uh we've gone through it all i can't wait to get over there
yeah this is going to be awesome yes so far i am uh we are in a irish like this is not a
there's not going to be a big stage this is not an amphitheater this is not a theater
we are going to be live you're saying we're an authentic Irish pub? Not a parking lot either.
Yeah, there's no parking.
Yeah, it is.
No, no, no.
We are in the pub.
It's awesome.
That's how it should be.
Yes.
And I think there's going to be this place.
J.R. Mahan's has like four floors, I believe.
We're not on the basement floor.
We're on the ground floor.
I think it's like 100 people at that particular floor.
So we're going to figure out how it all goes.
I assume we'll be there beforehand, too too to say what's up to people if anybody shows up outside gonna have to
bounce at some point to go do a program we'll obviously have special guests we're gonna have
some people from ireland to stop by who've been massive pieces of the football over in europe and
in ireland specifically i believe there's going to be 40 to 50 guinnesses Guinness and I. I don't know. In this entire thing. Whoa, whoa, easy.
Jesus.
What was that?
Talking Olympics again?
No, I'm talking Guinnesses, plural.
Oh, okay.
That's on me.
We're not talking about the country.
I'm already thinking about being in Ireland.
Yeah, yeah, of course.
Yeah, sounds like it.
Yeah, it certainly sounds like it.
But it should be fun,
and we're very grateful and thankful for all of the seemingly hospitality that we have received thus far.
Should be a blast.
But yeah, we are not 100% sure how many humans will be showing up at this.
So we picked a spot that we wanted to have a good time at.
Yes.
Yeah, and there are four.
Yeah, yeah.
So this show was put together, I don't want to say over the last few weeks,
but certainly over the last few weeks.
Yep.
And the mindset was strictly on our end.
Can we enjoy this?
Can we enjoy this?
Can we enjoy this?
Because we're about to kick off a very long season.
We're very lucky to cover football, very thankful that this is our job.
But the Friday before the season kicks off,
that's a pretty big moment here.
We're about to dive in to 20-some weeks
straight of all football.
It feels like from what we've learned,
there's going to be no better place to kick off
football than at J.R. Mahon's
on 23-08-24.
Well said.
5 p.m. local.
Cannot wait. It's going to be awesome.
Been looking forward to this basically since
it was birth. This Mahon guy is a weapon. This Robert guy's going to be awesome. Been looking forward to this basically since it was birth.
This Mahan guy is a weapon, this Robert guy.
Just an absolute weapon.
I do appreciate, and I've got to meet some Irish folks through the WWE,
a lot of superstars from Ireland and WWE.
I do like that just all of their language, just TH is just not.
Nope. So anytime, I think you should, the amount of I think's that have come from
Robert Mahon throughout this entire
thing. So how would we go about
doing this? I think you would have to, and then I think you would
and it's just like, I can't wait to get over there.
I can't wait to shake their hands. I can't wait to
see the way it goes. And I can't wait for
the Guinnesses.
Ah, me too.
Lad. Is that how you say it?
Is it Guin-I?? Is it get high?
I think it's get high.
That's just me, though.
Look it up.
I think get high is very okay, even though you were trying to make it.
Oh, no, no, no.
I was leaning either way.
I was just making sure when I say it, I don't get accosted.
Yeah, you're right, because that does happen to you.
Yeah.
Hey, congrats, Coach Dutch Danger, winning the national championship.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
What a great game.
That was a big game, dude.
He almost gave it away.
It was a three-point game, fourth quarter.
Got sloppy.
I saw the jubilation once he won, though.
Man, it was amazing.
He really did bask in that championship for a while.
He did.
Just sitting there, promises made, promises made.
That's right.
Champagne shower.
The ring door.
We did it. Rings of two or five. Back to recruiting. Recruiting right after that, I promises done. That's right. Champagne shower. The ring door. We did it.
Rings, two or five.
Right back to recruiting.
Recruiting right after that, I'm sure.
Call and recruit.
I mean, yeah, call and recruit.
Trying to get Joey Hammer to transfer to Ohio State with me.
Trying to get him to come along.
6'5", 315.
Talking about high school.
People still playing college football, 2K?
They are, but I have heard, actually, very good news about the Madden.
Madden got released yesterday.
Played last night.
I can't confirm.
Yeah, there you go.
D-Buck played.
How was it?
Good game.
Good game.
So the thing about college football, the tackling, the pursuit angles are absolutely terrible,
which you see in college football.
You see it on Saturdays.
That's coaching.
On Sundays, much better AI players, much better tacklers.
But it's a good game.
It was smooth gameplay.
I'm about in week six right now with the Colts.
Then we're four and two.
We're going into week seven.
Four and two.
Just played the Steelers.
And the quarterback, starting quarterback for the Steelers was Justin Fields.
Wow.
Yeah, he was out there.
Did you win or lose?
We beat him.
Well, that's not real.
We beat him.
Video game classic.
Nail biter. Is that game in Indianapolis? Yes. Yep. Well, that's not real. We beat them. Video game classic. No biting.
Is that game in Indianapolis?
Yes.
Yep.
Man.
It's going to be tough to get a win in Pittsburgh.
It's going to be tough to get a win in Indianapolis.
We lost the AFC Finals banner, though.
That was one of the things that people did.
What's that about?
We didn't know that was leaving.
Did not know that was leaving the stadium.
Last Steelers game, there was a lot of fans here.
So, I don't know how tough.
You're talking about Yinzers? Yeah. A lot of Yinzers travel over here. Yinzers was leaving the stadium. Last Steelers game, there was a lot of fans here. So I don't know how tough. You're talking about Yinzers?
Yeah.
A lot of Yinzers travel over here.
Yinzers took over the stadium.
Browns fans took over the stadium.
Washington fans.
Anyway.
They didn't know.
Yeah.
No.
Nobody told the Washington fans that came to the Commanders game that their team name
was the Commanders.
No.
We were just talking strictly merch walking around the stadium. They kept their old merch. They didn't throw away their team name was the Commanders. We were just talking strictly merch
walking around stadium. They kept their old merch.
They didn't throw away their old merch and get a new one.
It's almost like it was a problem. This is how long I've been around.
You see the rips
in this shirt.
I go way back. That's what they're saying.
It was everybody. I did not see one new
merch.
A lot of
as there should be.
Did they change that statue?
I doubt it.
Oh, man. I hope.
I doubt it.
Not all statues are the same.
No Commander's merch? Even with the song?
Did not.
Put your left hand up.
Who are we?
The Commanders.
Yeah. You thought that would push a lot of merch?
Yeah
Shout out T-Pain
That was not T-Pain or Wale
What?
Yeah
This is not
Fooled me
Wale
Thought he produced it
Wale was not part of it
Oh
But I do
I think I've seen on the internet
Wale's back
I think Wale's making music again
I think
That's great news That'd be cool Welcome back the internet that Wale's back. I think Wale's making music again. I think. That's great news.
That'd be cool.
Welcome back, Wale.
Love Wale.
Yeah.
Great brain.
Went to school in Pittsburgh.
Also front row mania.
Yeah, he's a mark, too.
Yeah, big, big wrestling fan.
Absolutely loves it.
I enjoy the Wale.
I hope he gets back.
Hey, Wale.
Come on.
Got a long football season coming. Yeah, we do. I need some. We're starting that thing in Dublin on Friday. Hey, Wale. Come on. Got a long football season coming.
Yeah, we do.
I need some.
We're starting that thing in Dublin on Friday.
Hey, let's make sure we get proper rest.
Yep.
Proper waters.
Sure.
Let's make sure we, you know, understand and experience the Dublin culture.
Okay, when we're over there.
Oh, yeah.
Let's not embarrass the program.
I think we can do that.
I think we can, too.
You might have slanch, slant just launch a slant
i was gonna say i don't know how early i could get to that bar because i'm worried about
what what proceeds after getting there you'll be good if it starts at what because it's five
o'clock over there for us right yeah five to seven it is literally happy hour time on a friday yeah
so when our show is going to be live from a pub right and i guess that area there is a high
traffic yeah high volume.
Even if they're not, yeah.
There'll be plenty of people that don't even know anything about the show.
That'll be jammed no matter what, right?
Bingo.
And we will take credit for those people.
Without a doubt.
That do not know that our show's there.
I am worried about the amount of Irish fans that we have over there.
But I don't know the lay of the land enough.
Will people travel from other countries to Ireland?
Is that one of those countries?
Fox, you've been over there more recently than I have.
I'm sorry.
What was the question?
We just got some big breaking news here.
Do people travel?
Fuck it.
We'll see you.
We will see you in.
Oh, no.
From Tom Pellicero, Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy
will miss the entirety of the 2024 season
after a torn meniscus repair today by Chris Larson
at Twin Cities Orthopedics.
There's a rap sheet and Pellicero at this point in the year one,
but repair gives McCarthy the best chance at a long career.
We talked about this yesterday with the meniscus.
A.J., you actually brought it up.
Are they removing it, cutting it, smoothing it, or repairing it,
which involves like stitches and putting it back together,
which obviously takes a longer time to heal.
To announce that he's out for the entirety of the season at this standpoint
is wild to me with what we read yesterday and everything.
But, man, what a bummer because he looked the part.
He certainly looked the part for Minnesota.
This is Sam Darnold's team this upcoming season.
I'm bummed out for J.J. McCarthy.
Yeah, it does suck. They say in there the repaired meniscus. Yeah, I don't know exactly how it all
works, but I know maybe the doctor got in there and thought he could, I don't know, repair it and
give him a nice future when it comes to his knee health. But yeah, that's the whole season already
to think, and it wasn't a ligament or anything. I guess – I mean, I give credit to the doctors for looking out for him long-term
and not thinking short-term, like, hey, we need to inject this guy back in the field
in four to five weeks.
Is this the first time I've ever heard of a scope surgery before a season?
Ending in a season-long –
I'm a rookie, too.
That's surprising news.
But, I mean, obviously once the doctors got in there, you know, every knee,
every injury is different. So, you know, every knee, every injury is different.
So, you know, you got to get in there and see it.
And we saw, I feel like now, especially with these young quarterbacks,
you know, doctors and the teams are airing more the side of caution.
We saw it with AR last year.
He had the shoulder issue and, you know, who knows how much say he had
into, hey, shutting it down.
But, you know, you invested the first round pick into him.
You got Sam Darnold there.
It's not like, you know, this is new to Kevin O'Connell
dealing with different quarterbacks.
So you got to get somebody there to back up Sam
that's going to be ready if need be.
But this is definitely disappointing news for J.J.
Godspeed, J.J.
Godspeed and peace.
That's a bummer, man.
Scope for a season.
Yeah, and to your point about long-term,
the meniscus is a big comfort thing in there.
And the discomfort is not – it is –
It's not growing back.
Once they take it out, it's not growing back.
Yeah, and it is a painful experience for the rest of your life pretty much
because they haven't really figured out how to put it back in.
And, you know, whenever your bones are doing this one.
Okay, so JJ's going to be back better than ever.
Sam Darnold's going to be in the KFC offense.
Speaking of offenses in the NFL, ladies and gentlemen, joining us now.
Yes.
A man who's an offensive coordinator in the great city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Arthur Smith.
Yeah!
What's going on?
Good to be back.
Hey, you know what else is good to be back?
That mustache.
You have a phenomenal mustache.
You know that. You shaved it. We saw you at the Combine back? That mustache. You have a phenomenal mustache. You know that.
You shaved it.
We saw you at the Combine.
We were worried.
Oh, we got suit.
Corporate, Arthur Smith.
You said, nah, nah, nah.
When football time comes, it'll be back.
How do you feel?
This is one of your best mustaches to date, I feel like.
Yeah, it just, you know, being in Western PA,
I feel like it grew back just a little bit thicker.
Speaking of being a little bit thicker,
that offense that you have is a little thicker thicker. Speaking of being a little bit thicker, that offense that you have
is a little thicker at the quarterback position. Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Russell Wilson
working too hard before training camp starts. So Justin Fields is going to get all the reps. All
we're talking about is that. Is that what you are focused on and worried about? Who's going to be
the quarterback? What is your main objective here throughout training camp as you're trying to implement your offense and should we be worried about who's
playing quarterback as much as we are outside looking in well i mean obviously there's no more
important position in pro football than the quarterback i mean it's been shown throughout
the history of this game certainly last 60 years but um that's part of it obviously it's a big
piece of it but we've got a lot of
competition going on in other spots um you know we drafted three offensive linemen there's been
great competition inside uh you know going into camp whatever the plan was you know with the
competition uh russ getting injured certainly put a wrench in it but it was more opportunity for
justin russ has been back lately and uh it's been awesome i
mean the whole vibe up here the culture uh with mike and the whole organization it's been fun
being up here how's st vincent college you loving it up there oh yeah the latrobe is is you talk
about the history here um you know gone to dino's a few times i don't know if you've ever been out
there i had a pit stop there actually got to uh to go out for beers with Brett Michaels one night.
I mean, there's not many places like it.
So you were there with Jay Glazer, Brett Michaels, Mike Thompson, that whole crew.
We didn't see you in the shot.
You were hiding from the camera.
That's smart stuff, Artie.
Yeah, I didn't want to mention his name because I don't want to give my brother the dopamine
hit, but I wasn't trying to get noticed.
Where were you at?
London?
He was in London.
He positioned himself in a perfect spot.
They had a great earnings call.
He's probably sitting here
waiting for you to mention his name, so we'll just say
my brother.
Congrats to FedEx.
Congrats, FedEx.
Obviously, your family is one of massive success,
and you've been around football and chose to do football
instead of putting your feet up on a desk.
And we've talked about this a lot,
but grinding away with the Tennessee Titans,
sleeping on couches,
all the shit that you had to do when you didn't have to
is one of the reasons why we love you so much.
But now that you're back,
just being an offensive coordinator,
are you enjoying ball more?
Are you finding, like, old-school Artie Smith back again
after the head coaching experience in Atlanta?
Or how do you kind of feel in the position that you're at right now in Pittsburgh?
Yeah, I mean, it's a completely different job.
You know, people have asked me, and everybody's different.
Every organization is different.
It was awesome.
You know, I'll always be grateful for my time in Atlanta.
I love the players, the staff that we brought in there,
and wish those guys well, certainly after we play in week one.
But, yeah, they're just different roles,
and depending on what your job description is behind the scenes,
and you've got to know yourself and tons of lessons learned,
and this has been refreshing.
It does feel you realize what you don't worry about
when you're calling the game.
And you get to focus on the offense at nothing but time
to go back and get creative, study a lot of film.
You know, I was sitting in the South Side
in that Spring Hill Suites during the week all spring
when my kids finished up school.
So it was kind of refreshing, and it's been fun.
Pittsburgh will do that to you too.
You get back in there, you just feel the football everywhere.
I mean, football is the lifeline of that entire city.
I'm excited to see what you end up doing with that offense.
They're looking for something and have been for a while.
Go ahead, AJ.
Coach, I don't know if you know this,
but a lot of times when you guys have open training camp practices,
media will evaluate your players for you sometimes.
I don't know if you read it.
They might let you know exactly how your guys are doing.
Is that something you ever pay attention to?
And how do you truly evaluate guys?
I know sometimes the media may think a quarterback is playing out of his mind
or something and coaches will bring him back to earth or something.
Like how do you evaluate players and do you actually pay attention
to how maybe some other people might view your players?
Well, I mean, it's just the modern NFL, you know, with the access and the digital era we're in and between social media and everything, you know, everything's filmed, video phones and whatnot.
I mean, it's there's a lot of ways to look at it.
It's awesome because people care about what we're doing.
And that's what makes the NFL so great I mean you talk about you know football and the fan interest um you know and you don't want to be arrogant with it I mean you know you get sometimes
and people say some smart things sometimes it's you know you're whatever but the only time it
you know you ever feel the need to bring it up when you feel like all these players,
well, I say all of them,
but a lot of these guys look at,
they're very in tune to what's being said about them.
And you know how it is, AJ, you're in a one-on-one and somebody runs a choice route
and you're playing outside,
later trying to play the call
and there's 30 yards of grass inside
and everybody's willing to hide.
They may have broken down what would be a sack
and six Mississippi and he launches it
and they're like, wow, what a good throw.
I mean, it's all perspective you know if it affects a player you know that's the only
time i'd ever bring it up to try to keep that perspective there's a lot of things we're working
on you know sometimes even in the preseason you know what you're showing uh you may have a
philosophy going in the game hey i'll get this concept called we need to see it live you know
and sometimes you concede some possession downs that you normally
wouldn't have. You still need to execute it
so it's not an excuse, but there's
a lot going on depending on your
strategy in the preseason.
But yeah, they love the football
up here and it's a fun part of the job.
I mean, the amount of people that are here every day is
unbelievable to me. They'll judge you too.
Don't you worry about that. You injured no ball.
As we continue on YouTube and ESPN+,
we'll see you tomorrow on ESPN.
I think I got it all in there. Anyways, we're still live.
People are still listening. We're just no longer on ESPN2.
Little League World Series on ESPN1.
I think a kid just hit a dinger.
Kid's having a dream. I believe I just saw that.
We're on YouTube and ESPN+.
Coach, people will hear what you have to say.
I appreciate that you feel obligated
to maybe correct a narrative that's being built off of maybe a practice rep that's being seen because you have to say. I appreciate that you feel obligated to maybe correct a narrative
that's being built off of maybe a practice rep that's being seen
because people have to work on stuff.
They have to work on stuff.
People are allowed to practice and get better.
We saw a one-on-one.
What team was that?
Drag route.
I think it was Chargers.
Yep, Derwin James.
So it gets Derwin James, one-on-one, wide receiver, cross field,
all the way to the others.
Herbert was just sitting, chilling, and then,
oh, beats Derwin James. That's impossible. That's impossible, but you can't explain all of that.
For you guys, your offense, do you feel like you are now in the perfect city with the perfect,
I don't want to say tool set, but like the players that you have, does it feel like a
perfect setup for an Artie Smith offense right now? And for Russell and Justin, is it two different offenses or are we
installing same offense? No, I mean, you got to think of the other guys too. I mean,
you're operating it. It's an unusual situation. There's very few comparisons where both
quarterbacks are new first year. And there's a lot of, a lot of things, a lot of change here
offensively. So, you know, a lot of times you of things a lot of change here um offensively so you know a
lot of times you get these quote-unquote competitions and a guy's been drafted in the
first round and then you know a guy may be a veteran bridge starter we've seen that narrative
played over and over and uh this one is truly unique where both guys are here uh here to compete
uh one's you know obviously played longer than the other. So it's a very unique situation.
And then at the same time, you're also building offense
to the strength of your O-line and the other skilled players you've got.
They're similar in certain ways, but obviously there are certain things
that Russ does that we lean into, and same thing with Justin.
Yeah, and that's just on you to decide which plays, I guess.
We'll put in our plays and then which plays for which guy.
Lies on the man with that stache right there.
Speaking of staches, a guy that should have one, but he doesn't.
Live from Hammer.
Don!
Don!
Diehard Steelers fan.
Tony Diggs has a question for you, Artie.
Yeah, Coach.
Can't thank you enough for coming to BDLC.
I can't.
As a Yanjar, I am very happy.
And I have said, if we start well, there will be a mustache on this face,
just a mustache.
But you talked about –
Jawline tone.
Yeah, yeah.
Maybe.
Maybe.
No pressure, coach.
No, we talked – or you talked about the position battles
and drafting the young guys, especially on the O-line.
And their reports have been that Broderick and Dan Moore and Fatana
have been rotating at the tackle position,
and then Herbig and Frazier are at the center position the end of the day before week one will that be your
call on who goes um and how much leeway has or how much freedom has coach T given you to basically
run the offense how you please yeah I mean obviously those are big decisions and you know
that's what the previous job has taught me. If anything, you understand more why Mike and this organization do a great job of collaborating,
but ultimately those are his decisions and the organization's decisions.
You get plenty of input, and Mike's given me plenty of leeway here, but the same thing I did in Tennessee.
I never wanted the head coach and me not
to be on the same page and mike's been awesome awesome because you know his experience his
history uh you know certain things maybe how you want to attack a defense or you know how he sees
something that's daily communication and uh you know it's not like there's just independent
contractors and we're not going to be in sync with the defense or special teams and and mike does a terrific job doing that same thing braves did in tennessee and and that's why to me it ran
so smooth for me just from a play caller's perspective but you know those are those are
big decisions and um you take input from everywhere but you know that those are the decisions that
mike and the organization will make and and uh that's that's the beauty sometimes of being the
coordinator um where you get to just coach ball and try to give them your objective opinion and and the organization will make. And that's the beauty sometimes of being the coordinator,
where you get to just coach ball and try to give the objective opinion. And once the decision is made, we're rolling full steam ahead.
We understand and know that your offense has been very successful running the
Rock, you know, and especially with Naj there.
If we can get Naj going down, it's always there.
Yeah, always there.
Get Naj doing his thing with that offensive line and the young guys performing well, it's going to be good.
But you got weapons, obviously, on that team outside.
And maybe another one.
You know, every other day, seemingly, there's a chance that another one's being added.
But D-Butt's got a question for you.
Yeah, maybe, Coach.
And I'll stick with the coach speak.
I know you're worried about the guys that are there.
I know Roman Rookie's banged up and Pickens is a button superstar out there.
But how's the rest of that wide receiver room shaping up out there with you right now?
Yeah, those guys have done a good job.
You know, Van Jefferson's a guy that's had a terrific camp.
You know, we had Van.
We got him from the Rams last year.
I've known Van.
I worked with his dad.
I watched Van play in high school.
A guy that had his big moments in the Rams.
And, you know, he's healthy. healthy i mean he's had a great camp uh in calvin austin i mean these guys
i mean there's scotty miller uh despis patrick you know they're all quez walkins they're all
competing and um you know that that where it feels a lot more like tennessee where you know
everybody's getting involved we got different you know the things that we'll do now that maybe I've done in my past,
not even as an OC, but as a tight ends coach.
Because we've got a unique offensive line here.
And you don't ever want to get stale and you want to play the strengths.
We have an identity in our style of play.
That's what's made this job so fun so far.
Let's move in a little bit.
Ty has a question for you.
Friend of the program here. We're a big fan of this guy.
Yeah, Coach, you just mentioned being a
tight ends coach, and obviously you've coached
a couple really good guys, but a couple
of the beat reporters we've talked to from
the Steelers have said how good Muth
has looked so far during
camp. How excited are you
to kind of, I guess, how
good has he been so far, and how
excited are you to see him
once we actually get some live action here?
Yeah, it's another weapon offensively.
And, you know, asking him to do different things,
there's things that, again, no player's the same,
but, you know, when you can have historical references
or you go back, you know, a lot of things I looked at in the spring
that even when I was in tight end coach
that we had done with Delaney Walker, you know, lot of things I looked at in the spring that even when I was in tight end coach that we had done with Delaney Walker you know skill set wise and you know every player is
different but you know it allows you to be creative and you have that historical background
or you watch other players around the league and you think it fits the skill set and you push them
and Pat that's a weapon in this offense and that whole tight end room is I mean don't forget about
Darnell and and Michael and Connor Hayward.
Those guys have all, they all have their roles,
and they've done a good job.
I forgot about Darnell there.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
He's blocking his ass.
He is so, and he can, he's got hands, too.
I mean, he seems to be a mismatch regardless.
And Moose, I don't think he's ever really been taken advantage of,
which I'm excited to see what you end up doing there,
unleashing the Friar Moose out there.
Now, A.J. mentioned it, some of the beat writers having an eye on the program.
Great Mark Caboli told us weeks ago, move.
Big move to be wide receiver two out there this year.
Expect big things from him.
Did you guys have a moment of silence over there for Mark Caboli
getting fired off the beat?
I know he's highly regarded around here, and I know he's a friend of silence over there for mark aboli getting fired off the beat i know he's
uh highly regarded around here and i know he's a friend of the program as well and had some brief interactions with him and you hate to see that happen to anybody but i'm i'm i'm which i'm not
but if i was betting i'd betting that you'll find a way to have success yeah we've already hired
that you know what i mean yeah yeah you wouldn. You just can read people, feels like.
And when you see that Kaboli, you know, destined for success.
Gets fired, doesn't matter.
We'll bounce back strong.
Guy tore both of his Achilles in one NFL season.
Didn't miss a beat.
Still dealing with it.
Do you know that, Coach?
I did not.
He didn't go on IR, right?
No.
Hell no.
He actually –
A toilet seat that same year, too.
Yeah, broke a toilet seat because, obviously,
a best Western wasn't the highest of quality at that particular time.
Both of his killies weren't necessarily the best,
so he was flopping down on those things and broke the seat.
Clogged the toilet.
Tosh ended up –
But that's what he did to cover the Steelers for the Ingers everywhere.
That's why you've got to hire him.
You've got to hire him immediately.
We have hired Mark Caboli.
I do believe he has accepted
the terms that we've sent over.
He is available to have other jobs, though.
We just get first priority. If we wouldn't talk
to Caboli, we get first priority.
Lifetime supply of man. He's going to grill
you, coach. Yeah, he is. He's getting
back in, too. Big Bert, obviously one of the
greatest PR people in the history of the NFL. Bert
Lawton over there. Great yinzer. Great man.
I said, hey,
Bert, can we get this guy a credential again to be
with the team? It's kind of his thing. Bert said,
we'll figure it out. And then I don't know if Bert
knows that we have officially hired a man. We need to figure it out.
Now. But this is a public so we'll figure it out. And then I don't know if Bert knows that we have officially hired a man. We need to figure it out now.
But this is a public proclamation that Caboli's going to be A-OK.
He's going to be covering the Steelers and the NFL as a whole.
Yes.
National right.
And the NFL as a whole.
Last question here from us, and we can't thank you enough, Artie, from Con Man.
Yeah, Coach, how awesome is it going up against the Steelers defense in practice every day?
Is it tough sometimes because of how dominant they are?
And do you have to kind of curtail the play calls that you have because of TJ
Watt and Minka and all those guys, or is it more so just getting about,
you know, getting those good looks from, you know,
those guys that you have versus some of the top tier players in the NFL?
Yeah, those guys have been awesome.
I mean, you talk a an unbelievable football culture here
and that you know and it's in the guys that come back and watch practice and the history of this
place i mean we had uh james harrison out here the other day i thought he's gonna get in the drill
i'm jack somebody up but uh tj those guys been awesome uh pat queen landon roberts cam hayward
highsmith minka i mean, you have real conversations.
They're great guys, but they take this job seriously.
You see what's made them great.
And absolutely, you know, I always joke with TZ,
I'm not going to let you wreck practice today.
So you don't want to be stubborn.
And sometimes he gets a little pissed, you know, if we don't, you know,
we scheme around him.
But I just, hey, I'm not going to be an idiot
and just let you, again, wreck practice.
Hey, we got to work too, bud.
Come on.
Do you chirp during practice or are you quiet?
No, we go back and forth.
That's why I appreciate those guys.
And there's things you pick their brains.
I mean, I've always signed up with players and coaches
and guys that have huge impact.
When I was a quality control, I was telling somebody the story the other day
how much I learned from London Fletcher when I was a defensive quality control.
I mean, you learn from everybody if you just listen.
You know, what are we doing that's obvious?
You know, how do you see this?
When you got real dudes that we have here, that only makes me better at my job.
Real dudes, they've been able to just win games
without having really any offensive efficiency for so long.
Now, Artie Smith bringing that big brain and that great stash.
I couldn't think of a better city to have Arthur Smith back as offense coordinator.
I can't wait to see what you do over there.
What's next on Docket for today?
Are we done with camp?
Is camp over now?
Kenny Wood?
We're winding down.
We'll be back outside tomorrow.
We're practicing the bills in the stadium tomorrow afternoon.
So you're going back to the suites?
No,
my kids,
my wife and kids are finally up here, and
we're real full
time up here now. So hopefully,
I've got two sons, and whatever
your buddies did that made you the
free spirit degenerates, and I mean that in the highest compliment,
hopefully that rubs off my two boys up here.
Okay, I think the water will do just fine,
and I will take that as a compliment.
I appreciate it.
But what A.J. said –
Bingo.
I understand that.
What A.J. said, though –
Have they gone to Kennywood yet?
You need to get them to Kennywood yet?
Yeah.
We had a –
In the spring, one of the days,
they had a team outing at Kennywood and they loved it.
Yeah, they did.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Free food, done.
Hell yeah.
Yeah, it was awesome.
Now, I just want to let you know there's been a lot of slander towards Kennywood on this particular program over the last couple weeks.
I have been the only person alongside Nick, Anton Diggs, Pittsburgh residents, obviously grew up going to Kennywood, idolized Kennywood.
We've shown pictures and videos of Kennywood.
Seemingly a lot to talk shit about, but I know the experience is wonderful.
Were the rides open?
How was the potato patch?
Did you stop by the potato patch?
I did not, but it took a whole quarter to my daughter.
We rode the roller coasters.
They had the park just open for all the Steelers players and coaches and their families.
And it was cool.
That's awesome.
I'm happy to see Kenny Wood still taking care of their people.
Yeah, well, it wasn't just open for the players.
It just happened to be the only people there.
Okay.
A lot of people came in there when they opened the gates.
Thank you, Art!
That's boots on the ground!
All the workers.
That's boots on the ground.
Good luck.
We appreciate you taking the time, man. Great to see you again.
Great to see you all.
Thanks for having me. Hey, new kickoff. What are your thoughts?
I just worry
about the offense, Pat.
There's your answer. Ladies and gentlemen,
Coach Arthur Smith.
Yeah, Coach!
What are we doing?
I'm not even. I don't have to.
Let Danny worry about that.
Special teams coordinator
been in Pittsburgh
from Pittsburgh.
Chews more gum than anybody.
I couldn't even imagine
what he's doing
for these kickoffs.
Excited to watch his brain work
and him go down the sideline
with all his shit.
Pittsburgh Steelers
are entertaining.
Artie Smith going there
is like the perfect,
you know,
because Matt Cannon
obviously was what he was.
And when you follow that up, you're in a good spot.
Yeah.
Let alone if you're like a relatively entertaining person who your comedy fits in the city very well.
And understanding and your style of football being what the city loves feels like a perfect,
literally feels like a marriage.
And they've been looking for an offense that could do anything.
Right, Tony?
I don't want to speak out of pocket for you Steelers fans, even though I know,
I feel like I know a lot of them.
It does feel like a perfect fit there, Tony, doesn't it?
Yeah, I mean, because Artie's a smash mouth guy.
What's the thing we've been talking about the last few years is that the Steelers way
has kind of been lost
especially on, mostly on the
offensive side of the ball. And Artie's
the perfect guy to fix that. And yeah, literally
any offensive help
will help that team. Yeah.
People have been chanting for it around
the entire country for some offensive help for the
Pittsburgh Steelers. Artie Smith's coming in
and doing it. Saw him light up whenever he
heard Nodge's name. Oh yeah. Did you see that that tone his eyes got bright where he brought knowledge I'm not gonna
I'm not gonna say it yet but I mean nage is a he's a big six three running back who you know he kind
of resembles a running back that he in the past and maybe he can rejuvenate similar number and
I think nage is in his best they said best shape he's ever been in.
That's good.
A contract year because they didn't pick up his fifth-year option.
If not, Jalen Warren's a dog. I was going to say he's very good.
Jalen Warren, yeah.
Jalen Warren, yeah.
Give him the ball as well.
And then GP on the outside is going to be –
I mean, they got players.
When he went through the defense as well, like everybody on their defense,
I feel like their offense has a lot of weapons.
We just got to figure out if Russ or Justin Fields,
who's the guy, and what do they look like
once they're in there? Need IU.
Tannehill's still out there. What's that? Need IU.
If you get IU there, that's a game changer.
Mike Greenberg said,
are the Steelers really a one-year away
from... I don't think so.
No, he said that's an interesting question.
It's a good question. Boy, I was out there burying the quarterbacks, too. Yeah, he said that's an interesting question. It's a good question. Well, I was actually buried
a quarterback, so... Yeah, he said
you went from one bad quarterback seemingly
to two bad quarterbacks.
Yeah, but if you get
Iyuk and then, you know, if these quarterbacks
don't work out and you get Dak... Iyuk, bro.
If you get Dak next year... I want to let you know
whenever... Yeah, okay.
Which is possible. Free agent. Whenever
Foxy said, we have massive news
I was like, Ayuk
Me too
In my head I was like, I thought it was all bullshit
And then JJ pops up there
I'm like, oh, bummed out
Not bummed out about it not being Ayuk
But like, oh man
That's sad news
That is very, very sad news.
Ty, I think, you know, Sam Darnold is obviously going to be able to run
that Kevin O'Connell offense in a beautiful fashion.
Justin Jefferson is going to be able to get his.
B-Flow is obviously going to have a good defense.
We have respect and appreciation for everybody over there.
You look at the Chicago Bears after watching Hard Knocks, hold the phone.
Look out.
Could be a team.
Detroit Lions, nobody's talking about them.
Only got better.
Only got better this offseason.
Yeah, but that beat writer did say that Jameer Gibbs,
like granted it's only a hamstring injury,
but hamstring injuries, when you stack them up,
typically need to knee injuries.
So there's a good chance Jameer Gibbs is probably going to tear his ACL.
What?
That is what a Detroit beat writer basically does.
You're saying you did not say that.
I did not say that.
He said we all know hamstring injuries lead to knee injuries.
Jameer Gibbs.
Do we all know that?
We don't know that.
I think what he meant to say is hamstring injuries potentially lead to more hamstring injuries.
He said ACL.
Yeah, but I think he meant to type hamstring.
He actually said ACL?
Yes.
In a post, yeah.
MCDC came out actually this morning and said Gibbs will be fine.
He'll be just fine.
And there was a doctor.
I also saw a report that tweet wasn't made by a real person.
Could have been.
I also saw Sam Donald throw an interception to Andrew Van Ginky off the edge.
Yeah, but Van Ginky's got an eye for the ball. He's a magnet.
Oh my God. I bet on him to win
defensive player of the year. I'm just saying. Van
Ginkle? In Flores' defense?
Yeah, I'm thinking Van Ginky's going to fly,
brother. Good odds. Clay
Matthews back in the NFC North by
the name of Van Ginkle. Fortunately,
his career kind of took off when Flores
left, so I don't really know why he
landed in Minnesota, but I wish him nothing but the best.
It was the foundation building.
It's wonderful, and, you know, I've seen the chirping about the show
potentially ending a little bit early on some particular days.
That's because, you know, there isn't a lot of shit to talk about,
and we need to rehash the same stuff. And I've learned over the last couple of months that when
we're just, you know, going, there's a chance we bring a lot more negative to the show than
positive to the show. But now that we are all the way back in this football stuff, it is easy to get
up on this microphone. It is, I don't want to say pure excitement from the moment I wake up
to the moment I go to bed, but kind of.
Because of how much I enjoy
chit-chatting about the greatest league on
earth alongside A.J. Hawk,
the Toxic Table, at Boston Corner,
and at Ty Schmidt. Ty, Yankees,
do we suck or what are we?
No, they actually have the best record in baseball.
The Yankees do?
Yeah, they went on quite the schneid there for a little bit,
but then started hot.
Juan Soto actually hit three homers last night,
first time in his career he's done that.
Aaron Judge leads the AL in basically every major statistical category.
So, yeah, I'd say things are okay right now.
I think somebody just told me that the White Sox losing streak
actually broke on a Yankees win.
It did not. It ended a couple days before. But then, yeah, you're that the White Sox losing streak actually broke on a Yankees win. It did not.
It ended a couple days before.
But then, yeah, you're seeing the White Sox series.
Okay, three easy wins.
And then you get beat 12-2 against the White Sox.
Not a great start.
Oh, you guys suck.
They hopped.
Nope.
They bounced back last night.
Anyways, what am I talking about baseball?
Is Paul Skeen still playing baseball?
Don't bring that up.
Don't bring him up.
Paul Skeen's on a bit of a bring that up. Don't bring him up.
Paul Skeen's on a bit of a schneid last couple of stories.
No, no, no, no, no. What?
You went into L.A. and the Dodgers got some good wood on Paul Skeen.
Yeah, it's Shohei's team.
We know that they got good.
Paul's just fine, okay?
We're in dog days of summer right now.
The Buccos.
The Buccos have fallen apart.
They have.
What do you mean? We're going to win this year.
Jared Jones, we got the Hundo
boys. Yep, the starters have been great.
It's Connor Jover for the Buccos.
The starters have been great. The bullpen blew about
five or six games in a row that they lost by
one run each time. They just can't win one
run games. I mean, Red Sox
are on the up and up. Are they?
Oh, yeah. Just one back-to-back
against the Rangers, brother. All right. I wasn't able to play in Are they? Oh, yeah. Just one back-to-back against the Rangers, brother.
All right.
I wasn't able to play in either of those games, obviously.
How come?
Because it was a chirping situation that took place.
Fucking Drake Mays' dad.
Well, that's Boston for you.
What a wild thing to happen in the world that we're in right now.
And then for that to take place.
And then obviously everybody's like,
let's compare that to everything else
that has happened
in the entire world.
Not just in baseball.
Oh, yeah.
In the entire world.
Wild time.
Let's all get along.
Let's keep it moving.
Let's remember baseball
at this standpoint
matters.
Almost.
Does it?
Still going on.
It does.
Still going on.
That's good.
It does.
Paul Skeens is going to be back.
You know,
Paul Skeens has his football season,
so he's a little distracted.
Exactly.
Next year, he'll be back. No, this year, he's going to be back. Paul Skeens has his football season, so he's a little distracted. Exactly. Next year, he'll be back.
No, this year, he's about to get it.
How many more starts does he have?
Let's see.
We've played about 111 games, about 51 games left.
I don't know where he's at in the order right now.
He's probably got about eight to nine starts left.
Okay, good.
So he's about to go eight, nine, no into the offseason.
He's rookie of the year favorite by far. And we're going into postseason, right? Every team makes the playoffs? No, no, no. Okay, good. So he's about to go 8-9-0 into the offseason. He's rookie of the year favorite by far. And we're going into
postseason, right? Every team makes the playoffs?
No, no, no. Pirates will not.
Is that how it works now?
Neither will Sox, though. Whoa, whoa.
We're a game back from the wild card, brother.
Don't you put the card before the board. That sounds like a made-up thing.
No, no. I read it on the
bottom line. You've been looking into the Boston
Red Sox as of late, huh? Big time, yeah.
Yeah, trying to learn about the team, yeah.
A lot of people have been learning a lot about that team.
From what I heard, a lot of people are doing that as well.
Nine-year NFL vet Darius J. Butler is here.
Good to see you, pal.
Great work this week.
Hey, there was a man that retired yesterday
that was legitimately one of the most
that was legitimately one of the most fire-igniting players to ever step foot onto a football field.
His college highlights at the West Virginia University are top-notch.
Ranked among greatest highlight tapes of all time
for what he did alongside Geno Smith.
His speed, absurd.
Then he gets in the NFL, same damn thing.
Highlights all over the place.
Tavon Austin has retired.
How should we remember and talk about Tavon Austin?
Obviously, as a West Virginia human, I'm a big fan.
Even though he took a punt 99 yards on me,
Tavon Austin took this punt right before in the second quarter.
Obviously, they're up 14-0 at this point.
Things are not going well.
That's supposed to be down to one. And Gunnerner was gonna get there and then all of a sudden yep yep yep you're
on tayvon austin's highlight reel i got tripped i would have tackled yeah okay uh i got tripped i
would tackle it i would have got tackled to try to draw a penalty instead all we saw was tayvon
austin dancing in the lucas oil stadium end zone He calls it off smart play, high IQ, which is always a part of these highlights.
Oh, man.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Pretty fast.
Pretty fast.
Take your move.
Good morning football ranked his NFL plays,
and obviously it would be impossible to do that to his college plays,
but this was the number two one.
And I will say, with my knowledge of Tavon Austin,
the goal was to not have him touch the ball
which is why that ball was so aggressively punted you know if that's a touchback we're okay
if that thing is going in there we're all right but instead he takes that thing all the way to
the house 99 yards ruins that ruins life and uh I gave away a car at halftime of this particular
game he had two touchdowns in the second quarter so So that was a Tavon Austin game in Indianapolis.
They beat the hell out of us.
We were down a lot quick.
What a game this guy had.
Are you kidding me?
That was his game.
He single-handedly beat us.
Yeah, and a lot of people say it was the punt that certainly set the momentum.
But the thing about Tavon is it felt like every game that could have been the Tavon Austin experience sometimes it was and then when it was everybody knew about it how should we
be viewing Tavon Austin's career and I think everybody in football has said thanks to him
for all the highlights he's provided all he was electrified I think it was Naheem Hines I think
they had some joint practices or maybe pre-game when he had a conversation like hey man really
look up like he was he was one of those guys that kids looked up to
to see his highlight tapes out of high school, college.
Like you probably got to put him Mount Rushmore.
I mean, across sports.
Like his highlight tape was that.
You put his top ten, I think, against.
Against anybody.
Against anybody.
I think so.
I mean, he was just so fast, so quick, obviously small.
But if you're that small, you get drafted.
I think top ten, like you don't get drafted.
Broke that guy and this guy quit.
Ah, fuck.
That's just one play.
He was different.
Congrats on a hell of a football run, Tavon.
Have no idea what you're going to do next.
Tavon, obviously, at West Virginia was a superstar.
There's the Orange Bowl where they just cooked.
I mean, just absolutely cooked.
Noel Devine was obviously at west virginia before jock sanders was there uh before tayvon got there
and then tayvon obviously just continued the trend of being a little bit undersized but better
football than you and uh that is the tayvon awesome story what a run aj you would have been
able to tackle him guardian cap on or not you know no i would i mean it's like watching the old school like and one mixtapes when you see his his highlights of
what he can do and how he makes other like defenders look yeah like this guy absolutely
scary every time he touches the ball yeah yeah i just i mean look that how do you how do you pursue
like when you how do you pursue a guy like this when he can just stop full speed and cut back
across the field and then a hezi a full-on it stop full speed and cut back across the field. And then a Hezzy, a full on...
It looks like they're speeding up the
video.
Yeah, but you're somehow only speeding up one person.
Yeah, right. Side to side
too. So how does he get...
And also as I'm watching this, Morgantown
at night, Penn State look out.
Here we go.
Just look out, pal.
That's Oklahoma there.
There's been a lot of teams.
I forget what the record is for West Virginia at night, at home, as underdog.
Like the last – I forget what it was.
Coach Blaine Stewart read us the stat or whatever.
But people get got in Morgantown. It is not an easy place to get to or easy place to play.
So you factor in all those things.
In the big moment, it's like
they got Penn State top 10, obviously.
A lot of hope. I got nothing but respect for
James Franklin and what they've built. Obviously,
it's been Ohio State and Michigan for
however long, and Penn State has a great year until
they run into them, and that's a bummer. Got Penn
State friends. A.Q. Shipley, good
friend of the program. He's a Penn State
legend and everything like that. But boy,
that's first week. And that sets
the tone for both of them. If West Virginia
gets a win over Penn State in that Big 12,
in the Big 12, which looks very
different, there's going to be so much...
I mean, that is going to be a hype machine
after that game. And if Penn State
was to lose to West Virginia that opening night,
oh my God. Long season ahead. It would get
so, so, so loud about
the biases and the big... All of that feeds into the conversation.
But if Penn State gets a massive win there,
I do fear they won't get enough credit, you know.
Probably not.
Penn State won't get enough credit for the win either.
It's kind of like a double-edged sword in the entire thing.
And it's awesome, too,
just because of how much that would flip the entire season on its head
just right off the bat.
Like, we need at least one of those top 10, top 15 teams
to go down to an unranked squad like West Virginia just to,
hey, this is how this season's going to be.
It's not going to be the typical, all right, Penn State is going to beat
a bunch of teams and lose the late games, like you guys always say,
and then be 10-2.
Like, if one of those teams does end up like a 6-6.
Chaos.
Yeah, madness. Oregon going into Michigan. Bingo. You know, Michigan gets a those teams does end up like a 6-6. Chaos. Yeah, madness.
Oregon going into Michigan.
Bingo.
Michigan gets a win over Oregon.
That's a huge.
Huge.
Texas.
Huge W.
Texas going into Michigan week three.
Yeah.
It's like there is early big games, which I think,
and people are worried about the state of college football.
I don't think you have to worry about the state of the primetime games each week.
No.
Like in all the primetime. There are going to be massive games every single week.
Love that.
Me too.
As a college football fan and watcher, I love that.
But I do believe that the mid-range stuff is going to get a little bit, I don't want
to say diluted, but I think it is going to be a little bit, but I think every primetime
slot, like I think ESPN 330 every saturday on abc
has an sec game and the schedule is like stupid and they can move they can shuffle so i believe
if i listen to it right and i don't know if it's been reported so i'm not 100 sure it was during
the programming speech from the head of programming gave a good speech good presentation good deck
okay a good deck first time i think that espnPN or Disney has had to give them like a certain schedule of
when things are gonna happen during the SEC deal.
I think 3.30 on ABC is the SEC, like every single week.
But I think they are able to flex that, like throughout the year.
Yeah, smart.
I think they are.
I think that's what I heard.
Once again, it was like 32 minutes in to programming
stuff, and he was doing everything he possibly
could to go through what he had to go through.
But it was like a class that you just kind of have to
take, and we were all learning it. But I think
you said there were a lot of flex that, too.
I think there's... So you're talking like
every slot is going to be
fucking, I think, huge. And then you think about
Big Noon. Big Ten has
massive ones. And that's their
massive spot. So you've got SEC
and then Saturday night on
ESPN is always going to be good.
So it's like college football has a chance to have
the primetime games and the main event
games every week being
fucking gigantic. And I think that's going to be a real
benefit to the whole thing. Yeah, Tony probably knows
the specific games, but there's this
Saturday in October
and it is actually... October 12th.
October 12th. There it is. It is Murderer's
Road. Tony, do you know those exact games?
I'm holding it up right now. Yeah, but it is noon
like a top 10 matchup and then
3.30, two or three of them
and then obviously night game also
top 10 matchup. Ohio State working that week?
Yeah, it's Ohio State,
Oregon, Ole Miss, LSU, Penn State, USC, Florida, Tennessee.
There's just marquee everywhere.
It's like every game is like marquee, marquee, marquee, marquee.
It's like everyone, you're like, no.
And they have a chance.
And not that college teams don't have a chance.
That's the beauty of college football is everybody has a chance,
which is why college football is Saturday football
and then there's Sunday football.
Not that there isn't that, but in college you see crazy things happen.
And it's like now you're about to see crazy things happen
with biggest names every single week, seemingly in prime positions,
which is good, but there's going to be teams.
And we talked about it yesterday whenever we went through the stats.
How many years, 20 out of the last 21 years?
That were top 10 and then fell out of the top 10, unranked, sorry.
Yeah, and then 28 out of the last 30 years, what happened?
An unranked team has ended up in the top 10.
And that would be college football playoff.
And with 12, with 12 teams, it's like I'm getting very,
very excited about college football.
Hopefully so.
Last year, Mizzou was the team that was unranked that finished in the top 10,
and then USC was the top 10 team that ended up unranked.
Yeah, Caleb looks like he's going to be good in the NFL.
Yeah, he might have already been there last year.
Are you thinking about it?
Well, he had that sweet penthouse, 10 million bucks to be in L.A.
Living. That's probably why he's so mature. Been there, done that. sweet penthouse, $10 million in L.A. Loving it.
That's probably why he's so mature.
Been there, done that.
Different college experience, huh?
That's like Leinart and Reggie Bush back in the day.
Yeah, the fact that you could juggle all of that going on around you
in your college experience and still win the Heisman and play like you did,
it's pretty impressive.
College football is about to be awesome.
It's going to be nuts.
To your point, three of those four games where you just pulled up, they're TBD.
Of course, if Oregon and
Ohio State are where they are, that'll probably end up being
the night game, and then either
one of those could go anywhere.
Also, just in years past,
a lot of these games, talk about
as a fan base, you lose one of those games,
your season's over. The chances
of you actually going to be
one of the last four teams, that's not the case anymore.
We've talked about it. So if you lose in the middle
of October or in September,
hey, we could still go 10-2
and make the playoff. Or 9-3.
Or shit, who knows?
If your schedule ends up, some of those teams in the SEC
are playing
seven ranked opponents. Maybe you lose
four games and still slip in at 12 or something.
And that's going to be a loud conversation at the end of the year
that the college football playoff committee would be having.
Yes.
It's not ESPN. I thought it was
Kirk Herbstreet.
Kirk Herbstreet does not have a vote.
Now, when Kirk Herbstreet retires
from college game day
15 years from now, and he still looks
so young. Maybe 25
years from now. Whatever it is. young 25 maybe 25 years from now whatever it is will he
inevitably end up in that room i assume he will should but the people that are in that room
they have a lot of their own opinions ideas confidence pride egos yeah so just assuming
it's kirk herb street making decisions like have you seen who's in the you think they're just like
oh yeah okay kirk said it that's what that's not know, it is, so I think this year the college football
playoff committee, from what I learned once again from that college football,
they're going to be much more
throughout the entirety of the year as opposed
to just at the very end.
It's going to be like, here's what we're thinking, here's
how we're thinking so that we don't have the
full-on
Kirk Kirksey. Kirk Kirksey's killing college football.
This is the guy. How big is the
committee? Twelve people, right?
I think so.
By then, too, 15 years from now, it might be a 2014 playoff.
Like, without a doubt.
Hey, these are the best teams.
Okay, so that's a whole other thing that got brought up, I think.
Because they said it was growing again already.
Yeah.
I think that is not true.
Okay.
I think that has not been confirmed.
From what I learned.
Once again, this is college football conference.
Twelve, at least, for a couple years, you think? That's what it seemed like, yeah. Like, nothing has been been confirmed from what I learned once again, this is college football conference. 12 at least for a couple years you think? That's what it seemed like yeah like nothing has been this is what we're doing this has not been a there's been a lot of conjecture I believe.
16 right wasn't that the conversation like hey they're gonna go 16 two years from now.
They were already thinking about it. The Lieutenant General Rich Clark I think is his name Rich Clark.
I believe so. He was good man he was, and he was ready to take on like,
hey, this is obviously something a lot of people care about,
which is a good thing, but we know what that means,
so we're going to try to be as transparent about the process as possible
as opposed to in the past.
He just got hired like two months ago.
So it was reported that it's expected to expand from 12 to 14 for the 2026 season.
You're saying that is not a done deal.
Yeah, that felt like the way it was taught.
It wasn't directly mentioned,
but it was like, this is what we are.
Nothing else has been agreed to.
Like this is whenever the 12 team playoffs
are being talked about.
So he was seemingly inferring
like the other expansion stuff is not,
that has not been agreed to.
Maybe it's been brought up.
Just like in the NFL, 17, 18 games
has been definitely brought up by all parties. It's been brought up. Just like in the NFL, 17, 18 games has been definitely brought up by all parties.
It's been brought up how you go about doing it,
how would you do it.
I like the 17 game season, I really do.
But boy, as we battle against an off season
of without the Olympics, like the Olympics really helped.
Adding two more weeks, you know,
cause if you had a bye week and an extra game and two
more sets of prime time games and two more weekends of you know watching and carrot and it's like
important games as a fan as a fan i'm like games that matter boys let's yeah let's do 18 with an
extra buy and if it's joey b that has to run with it and make it happen,
it's like as a fan, I'm like, cool with that.
Players Association is going to push hard.
Very, very, very, very hard.
But like fans in the NFL, I assume, very eager to make that happen.
Yes.
We'll see what happens with one college football playoff with 12 games.
See how it goes because I think it is going to be.
Oh, man.
It's going to be gigantic.
Are you kidding me?
Games that matter. Win or go home.
That's all they care. If you're
a network and you're carrying the games, those are the ones you want.
And I don't want to
poke fun at any
environments, but some of these big
games get a little sooty, a little corporatey.
A little sooty, a little corporatey.
Not in stadiums. That first round.
The home environment.
That might be some people's first time watching college football
all year.
Maybe they're like NFL fans or football fans or casual fans,
but they hear playoffs and whatever.
The environments that are going to be spotlighted are going to sell college
football to people just like that.
So whenever you see that, it's like maybe we can add, right?
Maybe we add another one of those.
Like that conversation I think is going to naturally happen,
but I think they're focused on the 12 being great.
And I think it's going to be.
Yeah.
I think it's going to be.
Yeah, without a doubt.
And when you bring up the NFL too, like just looking at these next couple weeks,
like they could easily do the two preseason, not have that, you know,
week gap where there's nothing.
That week one of the college football season when
texas a&m is there's no nfl football there like if they were to move the nfl football season up to
september 1st or the last weekend of august whatever day that ends up falling on like
that would be so awesome well then good though said if you do that then obviously the end of
the season falls actually on like flag day or something so the monday is off after super bowl anyway so then
we technically have the monday after the super bowl off yeah we've thought you know haven't
thought about it i haven't thought about it but all your questions are answered seemingly with
one move and the amount of money people are paying for one primetime game i couldn't even imagine
adding two more weeks of that the nfl would certainly want to do that. Adele, when he talked about the 18th game, he was like, the preseason?
That might just be out of there altogether.
I'm not a fan of the preseason.
Doesn't bring in any money.
Also, do we want people watching?
If we have people's eyes, we want them to...
Good game, maybe?
We had to cut the price of the tickets. He told me that because I was like, yeah,
you guys are charging a full price for the preseason.
We cut that.
We heard you all.
We think it sucks too.
So we got the price. We didn't like it. We did it for a few
years. Pretty good little gimmick.
Pretty good. You got to respect it.
But we got the price on that last year because we all
agree we need to get rid of it. But then obviously that came
with a bunch of people saying, if it wasn't for those preseason games
i wouldn't be here this person would be here so there's always going to be uh you know there's
always going to be a give and a take you know thing just have one or two one or two preseason
games well in those joint practices like that thought too like i want to be here if those you
know preseason games didn't exist but like you're telling me all these joint practices like another
gm wouldn't have seen
and this is a bad example
because he turned into an all-pro player, but
Adam Thielen, who is just a
special teamer, you're telling me none of those
other GMs wouldn't watch a joint
practice, see Adam Thielen, who
was a nobody, run in routes and be like,
that guy might be able to play
receiver for us? Brother, some people are just
completely off the radar.
You know, like that Kyle Albright kid, the punter,
who has been camping outside of the Miami Dolphins for the last few weeks. Yeah.
I called a couple special teams coordinators, and I was like, hey,
should I – how do we feel about this dude's actual potential?
And they told me, like, yeah, not even on, like, top 40 for most people.
Now, is that scouting? Is that because
of him? Like, a lot of people didn't even know.
Like, I think a lot, which probably goes back to his point
of, like, hey, nobody knows me.
With that being said, if I was Jake Bailey,
it feels like you are targeting me. This kid's
from Ohio, went to school at Middle Tennessee
State, picks the Miami Dolphins.
I think they just paid Jake Bailey, too,
like, another $1.5 million or something.
He's on a two-year 4.25 right now
So this guy literally is like that guy's job
I'm gonna go get and it's it's very interesting if I was Jake Bailey
I would have gone out so I would have we would have talked and probably I
Mean, I don't want to like hey, let's go like let's go actually hit some balls here
You know just so maybe you could feel it like, Like, you know, so there is a reason to this.
But I think Jake Bailey's probably just trying to be, like,
as professional as possible with the whole thing.
But if I was Jake Bailey, I'd be like,
this guy's calling, there's 32 teams.
Yeah, what made him choose the Dolphins to go there?
Nice down there.
I get, I mean.
I suppose.
It's nice everywhere right now.
Go out there and, you know, do your thing.
Go play around the golf.
Go hit the beach.
Back out tomorrow.
Maybe a pit bull concert?
Yeah.
Maybe go stop by FIU.
Absolutely.
Stop by FIU.
Yeah.
But I was watching that all happen, and I was kind of torn on it because Jake Bailey,
I have massive respect for.
Jake Bailey murders footballs.
Now, Grant, I think there was a time where he was injured.
He did it with the Patriots,
which is why I left the Patriots.
He kind of lost his flow a little bit,
but with mine,
like they just paid him.
He's been around.
He's he demolishes footballs wherever he is.
It's like at some point that's got to come to a head.
And,
but I think now like bloggers and stuff for dolphins are like pushing for
this guy.
Right.
Like in journalists are like pushing for him to get an opportunity.
Yeah, there's a bunch of beat reporters in Miami
that were like retweeting his stuff.
Also, Jake Bailey, before Jake Bailey got there,
Jason Sanders had his worst year kicking.
And after he got paid, once Jake Bailey got there as his holder,
Jason Sanders was lights out again last year.
Good holder.
People don't think about the holding in the entire operation.
Well, you would also know more than
any of us, obviously, but when it comes to
bringing in guys for camp, the Packers
brought in five guys to kick.
Is it different for punting?
Camp legs happen. That's what I mean.
If he was in a top
40, he'd be in a camp somewhere.
There's other ways to go.
If he ends up getting a job out of this, more power
to him.
Watching it all unfold, I was just watching it all unfold.
I've just been very fascinated by it because, like, I started thinking,
if that would have happened to the Colts, like, how would I have felt?
I mean, it is like a handpick and like, hey, I think I'm better than you.
I'm going to come down here.
Yeah, my natural reaction is like, okay, okay.
I appreciate what you're doing.
Let's go ahead and figure this whole thing out.
And, you know, that was something that if you had a strong leg,
I'm not the creator of this.
Mike Cyphers did this to me whenever we played against the Chargers,
whenever I was a rookie.
He stood five yards behind me, every single one,
and just let me, like, feel what was happening. And he was a grown fucking man, and he hit balls so far.
I mean, it was the sound that was coming off of that.
And then his ball would go, and then I would go,
and then my ball would land, and then his would come down after.
And then he would just have casual, so how are you feeling?
And it's like, not good.
You warm yet?
Yeah, I'm not.
I'm not.
I'm not.
Shit.
Yeah, I do not.
This is not good news. Feels like you have quite a head start on me here. And'm not. Go to shit. Yeah, I do not. This is not good news.
Feels like you have quite a head start on me here.
And he was best in the game.
I think he should be considered for the Hall of Fame.
There will never be enough punters to go in to actually put in, like,
the great Shane Leckler ran the era.
You know, like, that is how it is.
And he deserves to go in.
I fucking love Shane Leckler.
He and I had a similar situation on the field as well,
where I think I earned Shane Leckler's respect, actually,
which was a cool thing. But it's like, I would do that to people, too situation on the field as well where I think I earned Shane Leckler's respect, actually, which was a cool thing.
But it's like I would do that to people, too, on the other side.
Let's do a little game because I felt how it felt with Cyphers.
I'm going to that game like, why am I on the field?
What am I doing here?
And then, like, you don't want that mindset as a punter
as you're going out to catch the ball.
It's like, ah, you know.
So I was never scared to like, like hey let's check a little bit here
kicking and punting and that whole thing i don't know why jake bailey hasn't done that already
don't just be like hey listen there are levels to this and i respect what you're doing and i
appreciate what you're doing but also you should go somewhere else but until that happens i guess
it's just going to continue to take place and jake bailey hits two three bad balls all of a sudden
there's a guy parking yeah but with all this attention he's bringing himself he very fucking good yeah yeah
very good which I assume he is he's got a lot of confidence which is I mean
almost the whole game of kicking and putting if you have strong enough leg
but that's an interesting situation has developed ever never had one might bring
him in someone could bring him in for a workout yeah i mean that's yeah ufo like a stampede
i don't know because now there's so many different ways to get like seen yeah you know they'll find
you they'll find you out there yeah there's a lot of camps uh what's his name this is not good
this is not good kicker or punter okay so carney John Carney. Tom Tupa. Was Tom Tupa a legend?
Obviously punted a long time, but he is not investing
back in kickers or punters, to my knowledge.
Carney worked at that Charlie Smith kid.
He's out in San Diego, California. He has
a kicking camp where he works with people.
But a lot of NFL teams reach out to him
and say, hey, do you have anybody at your camps?
Jamie Cole is a guy who
has a setup in Texas.
He's originally from Iowa, has a setup in Texas where he has a bunch of guys he works out.
And teams will be like, hey, do you have anybody there?
Then obviously the UFL, there's a bunch of jobs over there.
Bates just got signed out of the UFL to the Detroit Lions.
He's going to be their kicker.
So it's like in a time where there's so many different ways to get seen,
the camping outside of the facility is certainly an aggressive one.
And if it works out, maybe we'll see some more of it.
But also, if I'm Jake Bailey, I do take that as a massive sign of disrespect.
But I'm a little bit more petty probably than Jake Bailey.
Is Jake Bailey good?
He was good for you guys last year?
Not great on TV.
Oh, no!
He was good.
I mean, he was good.
And like I said, Jason Sanders was lights out.
But, like, he did.
He hit a couple short ones that people were upset.
Like, people don't love Jake Bailey, Dolphins fan.
Oh, so this is like a perfect setup.
And maybe that's why this Kyle guy went.
Yeah.
You know, it feels like.
Like, I like Jake Bailey just because Sanders was lights out again.
Like, that was my thing.
But also, they let Morstead walk to get Bailey.
So that's why Morstead was very good for us.
Morstead would have been one of those guys who,
if there was somebody camping outside, would have been like.
I don't know why Morstead walked to the Jets.
He was unreal for us.
He's still going.
Oh, yeah.
He's still.
He was drafted the same year as me to the Saints.
And he's still going.
And the workouts he posts.
He is jocked.
Absolutely.
Huge.
Yeah.
They need to fix sanders is madden
oh my god yeah that's what i thought you were gonna bring that up about the madden is how
shitty the graphics were yeah bad bad bad really i mean oh yeah marvin harrison jr looks hilarious
uh there's a bunch of people that look hilarious but jason sanders the kicker for the miami dolphins
like they i don't even think they attempted to make it look like him.
They did.
Yeah, he looks like one of Sandman's boys.
I forget which one in particular.
Rob Schneider?
No, not Schneider.
The bus driver from Grown Ups.
I forget his name.
Yeah, that's what they did to Jason Sanders.
Wow.
Yeah, so you got Jake Bailey taking an attack via land outside,
and then you got Jason Sanders getting a digital attack
from the people of Madden.
Special teams units down there.
Got to be mentally tough in Miami.
They did Jordan Poyer's journey as well.
Jordan Poyer is just a Chinese guy.
Oh, yeah.
Jordan Poyer?
Yeah, I'll find him.
Oh, is a Chinese guy.
This is Madden?
This is the game?
This is the game?
That was the go-to for safeties, I believe. Chinese guy because Blankenship from the Eagles is the Chinese guy. This is Madden? This is the game? This is the game? Yeah. That was the go-to for safeties, I believe.
Chinese guy.
Because Blankenship from the Eagles, also Chinese guy.
Yeah.
For sure.
So, whenever you think about game graphics and development.
There he is.
All pro-po.
Holy shit.
That's Jordan Poyer?
Spitting image.
Post-Iowa.
Jordan.
Fresh off his sitting, I think.
Yeah, that was post-ceremony.
Oh, no.
What?
That's how he looked.
Also, Jordan's neck is much bigger.
Jordan should be offended by the neck they gave him.
Well, I think he's got other fish to fry.
Let's FaceTime Jordan Boyer.
He's probably in practice or a meeting right now.
Has a hurt thumb, I do believe, down at training camp for the Miami Dolphins.
Miami Dolphins defense, obviously going to be called into question.
New defense coordinator. A couple new additions.
Calais Campbell and this man.
Of course.
Oh, yeah. There's Poyer.
Hey, Jordan.
I mean, after
looking at that. Who signed off on it?
Someone had to sign off on it. And this is normal? This is what happens?
This happens every year and then
people will shit on them big time on Twitter
and then they'll put a patch out and then they they'll actually have Poirier in the game.
So they do it on purpose?
I don't think they do it on purpose.
I think there's so many players that it's like, oh, no, this one slipped through the cracks.
We thought no one would find out.
Turns out it's a guy who a lot of people know.
We shouldn't have made him a Chinese guy.
So Jordan Poirier did not answer.
He's probably at the front gate at EA Sports.
On the phone with EA.
Get the guy face scan.
Come on.
Come on.
Yeah, that's.
You guys know WWE2K.
Exactly.
But that's the thing.
Like, I don't.
I feel like you don't even need to do that these days.
If it's like.
All the head shots.
He's been in the game for like 13 years.
How about T. Higgins?
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
That's why.
That's nuts.
That is very wild.
That's just Cincinnati Bengals football. Yeah, but all it takes is. And weins. Yeah, exactly. That's wild. That's nuts. That is very wild. That's just Cincinnati Bengals football.
Yeah, but all it takes is, and we've got to learn about this,
and we will as we continue to move on in our dealings with people
and other companies and expectations of stuff and everything.
All it takes is one person that isn't really, you know,
that's put in a position that shouldn't be or isn't really invested, you know,
and that can really for the, for the
totality of thing. I think a lot of us, I will speak for me, uh, you know, that person, I don't
care. Fuck them all. You know, like that, that is how I have operated, uh, throughout a lot of
times in my life. And then you go to a, uh, like a campus where a place is and you see that there's
thousands and thousands and thousands of people and it's like oh okay how things slip through the
cracks okay so there is all right so you look as we get older as i get older more mature that it
is kind of happening and we need to remember that with something like the nfl and this game that is kind of happening. And we need to remember that with something like the NFL and this game that is nowhere near accurate on numerous players that we all know.
Correct.
It happens.
Well, with that being said, fix it.
Have it happen.
Fix it.
Especially to a game like Madden that people are like actively,
tons of money, people are actively bitching about how they don't want to buy the game anymore.
It's like, hey, stuff like this would be a very easy thing to just,
hey, of course all the players look like themselves.
That's easy.
Speaking of players looking like themselves,
so much so players are studying video games.
Alabama, allegedly, utilizing college football 2K NCAA 25
to learn a new playbook.
Okay.
Okay, you get extra reps. You know, people say get mental
reps, get mental reps, watch film, watch film. Well, what happens if I just actually go through
a simulation here? You know, what if Milrow sees a cover two that shades down into against a
defense? He's playing week three. He can go ahead and slot that away. He's getting more reps than
anybody else because he's allowing college football 2k
ncaa 25 to kind of teach him the ways i love this move and i'm happy they're open about it because
i assume there's others that are doing absolutely love i think tyreek hill might have came out last
year and said this is how he scouts some defenses some guys i know as a player when i was playing
i would definitely go to a roster you know check speed you know check certain things not necessarily
a playbook because you know how or how they look those change you know, check speed, you know, check certain things, not necessarily a playbook because you know how those change, you know, but yeah, speed, awareness, you
know, let me see strength.
Let me see how I jump in abilities, all these different things.
Obviously they're more accurate with some than others, but young kids are playing games
a lot.
So, I mean, if you're, if you're using that time to also get better at, you know, keeping
the main thing, the main thing got no problem.
Yeah.
It could be an incredible excuse too.
You know, it's like people that try to write off taxes,
and they're like, I'm an athlete, so my shoes.
Well, I'm actually getting mental reps.
I'm playing video games.
You kind of go the other way.
Love the excuse.
But I do think it helps him.
Watching Dutch Danger do his thing with Notre Dame,
having to read a defense,
and which play you're going to make, making an audible.
Oh, yeah.
I do think there is real football to be learned.
Yes.
While you're playing those games, real decisions that have to be made,
things to look for.
Now, you're at a Sky Cam, so it's a little bit different than on there.
But I think you can learn some shit from these games.
And that is my biggest takeaway from watching Dutch do his thing.
Oh, and the huge part of college football 2K NCAA 25 was that every single
playbook was was very similar,
if not the playbook of the team that you're on or you're playing or whatever.
Really?
I feel like, yeah.
That's what they're saying.
That's what they say.
And obviously there's iterations, whatever.
But I feel like I know Ole Miss and LSU's offense like the back of my hand.
I feel like I could go and call that off.
You're Dart.
Bingo. I feel like I could be Lane K that off. You're Dart. Bingo. I feel like I could
beat Lane Kiffin and Jackson
Dart at the same damn time. I'll tell you what, in that
national championship, there was a couple
decisions that we were watching
long ago. For sure.
A couple wrong buttons clicked maybe
on a few throws when I was supposed to throw it
high, but I instead threw a little
liner, of course, and that's going to happen.
Situational football, we thought you were
fumbling a bag, called a timeout very late.
Had to, had to. I mean, look, two-minute warning,
Lee Cruz is on the football field, what do you want Coach
to do? Gotta have muck. Gotta get your guys
on the field on the fourth down. Yeah, bingo, and you were
almost thinking about running the play without your guy.
We were literally down here going, timeout,
timeout, timeout. Get one here, get one,
get one here. And what did I do?
With half a second left, you did.
It was like, damn.
Jeez.
But you made the right decision.
And because of the fact that I have worked and worked and worked that playbook,
I knew exactly how much time I had on the clock.
It's not like I ever had a worry that I was going to get a delay game.
I'm not some fucking asshole.
Can you imagine getting a delay game at that time in that game?
In the red zone.
In the red zone where you need one to go up by two scores what if you can feel gold they're only up by six of
the national championship no no you gotta go yeah and what did we do we went forward and we won and
I think you ran Zone and then a couple bubbles oh yeah but I I lean on the RPO because the RPO just
puts the defense in the spot and these are the things that some of these kids at Alabama are
probably learning I bet Jalen Melrose like hey need to fucking get a little more RPO in
this because sometimes we put that outside backer in a pretzel like this.
It's automatic first downs all day.
Literally watching you is like watching the West Virginia team that I was on.
You know?
Yeah.
There was four plays left, four plays right.
And they could have been 16 plays.
On any day.
On any given time.
At every position, we had
the guys.
There were a couple positions where maybe we weren't as strong.
Able to disguise it.
That little thing
to Darius Raynaud.
Steve Slayton was obviously there.
We had one of these to Darius Raynaud.
He had the hardest cut.
He was like a running back.
Yeah, he did hit the dead leg on everybody.
He was a returner in the NFL. We just had
it. So I was watching you and you were just
bubbling the team to death. It was like,
oh, that's Pat White football right there.
Bingo. Yeah. And that is
Pat White football right there. I mean, it's what college, you talk about
with Rich Rod all the time. Like that is such
a, that is college football now. Like so
many of these guys can move at quarterback. I mean, obviously now it's in the NFL too. But like that, you can do that all the time. That is college football now. So many of these guys can move at quarterback.
Obviously, now it's in the NFL too.
Did you guys know that whenever you were playing against us?
It was like, hey, they got – at the end of the day,
there's like four plays, but they could be 16 different outcomes
every single time.
Yeah, the menu was very small with West Virginia.
You knew it was going to be a zone read.
It could be some type of option, but it just takes one guy to be out of a gap,
especially in that zone scheme where you find a lane, lane and if it's steve slate and pat white
they're gone for 60 and then it's not a passing offense so you're you think you run run run so
you get that hard play action you hit reynold or the big tall ass receivers you guys had uh
what's the idea what are you guys like and then that's that's the play that breaks your back and
even with the game i know they've gotten more realistic with –
Jello.
And it helps – yep, a bunch of dogs.
With, like, the defensive front because a lot of 3-3-5 in college now.
Some people run the 4-2-5.
So having those defensive front, looking at, you know, Alabama, Notre Dame,
Ohio State, whoever it is, they've been more realistic with that too.
That college football, it was fun to watch you dissect defenses.
Because literally at the snap, you're watching the coverages,
and then you're making the decision off of it.
I don't want to say realistic because you're doing this whole thing.
It's as realistic as it can get.
So watching it as film, I don't think it's just like a hilarious excuse.
I think it's actual benefits coming from it.
What if Kalen DeBoer is like, everybody, two hours tonight. Yeah. NCAA 2K25 college football.
Well, and like defense.
Like what if he's telling the defense like, hey, we're playing LSU this week.
I need all you guys to play as the LSU Tigers on offense going forward for this entire week.
What are the trends?
What was beating us?
Play against us.
What do you think was beating us?
And then whenever you're playing defense, actually, which you started to do this last season, I think.
Fucking sucks, brother.
Yeah, but you literally just got to play your role.
Yeah.
You got to fill your gap, baby.
Like, literally.
Go hero ball, brother.
1-11.
I was just trying to, like, I was trying to play,
and obviously I played, what was it, like, quarter and a half.
I get it.
Scored a touchdown.
It was awesome.
Played a little defensive.
GG.
Recruited, tried to.
Fuck those kids.
My God.
Recruiting.
Hey, look, I'm with you now.
Six seasons in, recruiting really is a fucking thorn in my side.
Who has the time in the entire game?
How many houses can you set?
But whenever you're playing the defense,
you literally just got to do your job.
Do you play DN?
What's fun?
Do you play DN to rush a quarterback?
Well, yeah, but every play call you make,
they put you as a different person,
probably like the person that's kind of starting the drink.
So then I'm trying to get to the D end job just so I'll edge your quarterback here.
Bull rush.
I mean, I'm doing one or the other.
But then they got you as a safety because you're doing some cover two maybe
or something like that.
So then you've got to get to the D end, but they don't just get you there.
I think I hit the thing fucking eight times.
I was on eight different people.
And when the ball snapped, I was on the corner.
I was like, this is not.
And all of a sudden, you think you're the GM,
so you flick down, and then boom, you've got a wide open receiver.
Yeah, so that was a little bit
frustrating. That was tough to
kind of figure out, but yeah, the end is where I was
trying to get to every single one.
We're just setting the edge.
Well, and that's what's crazy,
because you dip and rip inside, and then
the computer's so good, the quarterback's rolling out to the right, and that's what's crazy Because you dip and rip inside And then the computer's so good
Core back's rolling out to the right
And all of a sudden, there's nothing but space
Not in what we play
What do you play?
Don't give these marks
There's only so many times
I can pause the game in the middle of the game
And show everybody what difficulty I'm on
And it's Heisman, and I turn the fucking CPU sliders up
Which makes the Which makes the other CPU sliders up, which makes the
other team even better. Oh, so you're going
max lifting with the rubber bands hanging off you.
Yes. I'm on Heisman plus plus.
That one.
People are yelling I'm on JV.
Okay. Who's saying that?
Heisman plus plus. Who's saying that?
All the marks in chat.
Fucking pissing me off.
I got no backup in there either.
You need to interact in the chat a little bit.
Play against people, Con Man.
Why don't you play against people online?
Because that's not fun either.
I'm trying to win national championships.
I'm not trying to win exhibitions online.
What the fuck is that about?
You got rings around here.
What are you talking about?
I'm going for gold, baby.
I'm not going for, hey, look at my online record.
It's pretty cool.
How about you get a champagne shower yesterday?
Oh, my God.
Nothing better. I mean, I couldn't sleep last night because i was just thinking about that
it was truly like an adrenaline rush the boys thought of it whenever that game started yep
long before the game started actually it was a long preparation for that well and then i i heard
at 21 18 i throw that pick you guys start pouring that water down the drain. Well, maybe that is when we had a little doubt.
Uh-huh.
Well, hey, look, rightfully so.
How could you not be worried?
I do appreciate that you're – so, Con Man records up here, and it looks like the room –
It looks great.
It looks sweet.
It's a good room.
How about him having a cloth over top of something right behind him?
And then things just like stapled onto the wall.
It's that room up there, you know, next to the perch in which Jack Carr saved the world.
Yep.
Where the rifle that he used will be memorialized forever.
Because what could have happened then, people don't even realize.
No, they don't.
With Arthur I. Intelligence.
No, Fishel. Fishel.
Fishel with AI intelligence. So he's up in that room. But his game is literally 30 seconds ahead of us. Intelligence. No, Fishel. Fishel with AI Intelligence.
So he's up in that room,
but his game is literally 30 seconds ahead of us.
And we're watching down here on the stream,
but he can hear us.
The, oh noes.
Oh no.
Yesterday, he had already gotten a pick.
He had already reversed the thing
while we were dancing on his grave.
He fired back.
So fuck you.
Fuck you. They don't even know. They don't even know. Oh back, so, fuck you! Fuck you!
They don't even know!
They don't even know!
Oh, yeah, right, right.
It's a fun, it is a very enjoyable experience here
to watch, to experience pretty much sports take place.
Yeah, and there's a few other games
that have been floating around there.
I don't know about Madden, but, you know,
I've been playing a lot of MLB The Show.
Oh, boy.
Yeah, you know, I'm sure that's something people,
we watch that, right?
It's a little more entertaining, honestly.
More entertaining than what?
No, definitely more entertaining than you would think.
But I think the next game.
It might be the best game ever.
Yeah, it's a great.
What?
I kept a PlayStation for years just to play the show because they wouldn't put it on Xbox.
I was an Xbox guy.
And then the show, i always had to keep
my place literally just for the game there's a baseball thing oh yeah it's unbelievable it's so
fucking i i guess for me specifically it's so fucking hard to hit a baseball holy shit what
do you mean you gotta figure out like you gotta you gotta aim where the ball's gonna go and then
you gotta swing and it is very difficult but i i think uh nhl nhl i would say is over the course of my life
bless you is my thank you thank you is my best game is the game i'm most skilled at would be
nhl so i think that might what about fifa is fifa because nhl i know similar to fifa right
yeah if you know how to play yeah but fifa was big because like you had to actually play like
there had to be strategy i think like people got very good at it because they actually knew.
NHL is similar too, right?
You've got to pass.
You've got to actually play.
You have to set up your lines on the specific style,
like behind the net, crash the net, overload.
You've got to set that up as well.
My brother and his friends played a lot of the NHL stuff.
The issue I have as somebody that can't play is if your team's going this way
two periods, you're in a much bigger advantage.
Yes.
So unless you really work on coming this way,
because I would argue I was almost better coming down.
Okay.
So for me as a spectator, it looks like much easier.
We're going up.
We're going up.
Definitely easier.
But if you work it enough where you can be good coming down,
that's where you take advantage.
Okay.
Then you really have a leg up.
Can you do a sideline cam?
Oh, hockey.
Not in hockey.
What are you, a psychopath?
Back in the day, they did old school hockey games, I believe they do,
when you could fight and everything.
I'm thinking Vince Vaughn and the Swingers, actually.
Hold on.
I think, funny you say that, I think Vince Vaughn's on the program tomorrow.
Yep.
Wow.
Huge.
Oh, yeah, he's got a new show on Apple.
Yes, he does.
He was on Hot Things with Sean.
Sean.
Sean.
Guy's a monster.
Sean.
He's great.
Great idea.
Evans?
Sean Evans.
Sean Evans.
There it is.
Hot Ones.
Sorry, Hot Ones.
He had that brilliant how big and how good in the
clips that have come from that through the era in which it did and Vince Vaughn was on there talking
about the future comedy yeah that was the big clip from the entire thing I'll be excited to
get his take on everything what he's dropping what's coming out next because boy an ad-libbed vince vaughn scene
there's not much you know there's not much that keeps up with that and that is no that's our era
too yeah and they really aren't making movies like that anymore i mean like seth rogan kind of like
that whole like the apatow thing but like the vince vince vaughn you know owen wilson especially
when they were just like ad-lib in a bunch. They just aren't making movies like that anymore.
So quick, so fast, so natural.
Just so funny. So entertaining.
When he was on Game Day, I was like
a bit starstruck.
You know?
Holy fuck.
Want to give a hug? Not too loud?
I started thinking of all the absurd scenes
where he just started like, obviously that is not a script.
That is clearly not the way you were... Unless you're the greatest thespian of all the absurd scenes where he just started like, obviously that is not a script. That is clearly not the way you were –
unless you're the greatest thespian of all time,
there's no way that that is from a script.
It's just coming from your brain.
He'll be joining us tomorrow.
Excited to talk to him about everything.
He's a big college football fan.
Oh, yeah.
He's a big Notre Dame guy.
Yeah.
He's huge.
Yeah, he is tall.
Yeah.
Athletic.
Charming.
Funny.
Funny, obviously.
Funny. Todd Diggs, any corrections today? Live from
Hammer. Todd! Todd!
You guys have been pretty spot on this whole
week, to be honest. How about that college
ball book you got right there on your desk? I'm proud of you.
This one right here?
Yeah, it's pretty cool.
Figure out your signature
yet for it? We got a printout?
Yeah, I signed one. I signed one for Pat.
Did look like
when you signed a yearbook.
Oh, sure. I like that.
I think I said, trust the climb.
Faith family football.
Tundex.
Tundex.
Still available now?
I'll sign yours too, H. Don't worry about it.

It's legit.
It's legit.
It's not like – I told Tone,
it feels like this would have taken 10 years to put together.
So I give Tone a lot of credit.
It's a legit, real thing.
Agreed.
It is something that Tone did every single weekend pretty much
for the last two years because of college game day.
And it's like the amount of information he had, it was like we should piece this together going into the season especially
with the brand new year and tone put it put the work in the research in typed it all out and
became a published fucking author proud of you tone thank you i appreciate the idea from you and
you know next year will just be bigger and better yeah and the hard copy there that he has you gotta go the extra mile and kind of create that
for yourself it's just PDF file it is just PDF file you'll get from store dot
pat Mac for show calm and I think tech the technology of it has worked there's
been a couple I think go easy for me it was super easy for me phone computer
it's everywhere we assume that was gonna be a massive headache yeah we're not
saying it was user error or whatever but yeah there was a couple people who lost their download
or whatever i had to send it to but a couple people i guess that whenever they filled out
their email wasn't the actual email so it didn't get sent to that hey i never received it well it
wasn't the right email which happens all the time not your fault literally shit happens that is the
way it goes but the store has held up pretty well with it yeah and the tech has worked very good how about it which usually never happens how the baby Phil yeah
all right let's get the out of here okay okay exactly three weeks from tomorrow before
we leave though Gumpy needs to oh yeah oh yeah yes b- yeah. Yes. B-Boy Gumpy. Oh, please.
B-Boy Gump.
Dude.
The 1996 Beckham tarp representing England in the World Cup with the collar popped is just an appetizer.
People think that's a show stealer.
Wait till you see B-Boy Gumpy.
Hey.
Oh.
Hey. Oh, hey.
Can we get a zoom in on the cargos into the...
Good, coach.
Sweet fair.
The shoe's fresh on the body.
I feel like Gump wears every shoe one time.
He never re-wears.
Gumpy's incredibly fresh all the time.
Thanks, Bex.
It's a pleasure.
Got the collar popped because you have to.
You look so cool, dude. I'm happy we got this on air. Way to go, Gump.
That's the greatest internet splunker on earth.
I like those pants.
They're joggers. They're straight out of Paris. They're straight out of the breaking
I think that is actually team worn cargo joggers.
That's for whenever you do that knee slide
bang, you can put the pads underneath
so you can slide.
They do check to make sure you don't have any metal plates
because the metal plate on the ground
would, and also the sparks would be like
whoa!
You're not able to use metal, I think.
We don't know if the sport's coming back because of Ray Gunn,
but I do know that there's a chance that there's a couple pads on her hair.
And I was thinking maybe Gumpch had one on,
but obviously they haven't arrived yet.
On the way.
Obviously.
And the shoulder pads and the blazer.
Gumpy, you're literally the best on earth at what you do, pal.
You know that?
Ripping clips, posting clips.
It's crazy. Rip, clip, post. Bang at what you do, pal. You know that? Ripping clips, posting clips. It's crazy.
Rip, clip, post.
Bang, pow, boom, boom.
Other people are like, we need to put our clips up
at the same rate that it's happening at that studiary program.
How do we go about doing that?
Well, you've got to find a shit painter from Canada
that is able to lock in somehow,
ear on one thing so that you can properly quote it,
post it, and also know which one probably should be posted.
And then you need a character named Bill
in the background, slicing, dicing, sending, chopping.
Not people.
Lucky to do it.
Oh, yeah, clips.
Very lucky to do it.
Yeah, he's like slicing, dicing, chopping.
Clips, clips, content. Clips. Content.
Just want to clarify.
Just clips, not people.
Although that has been said.
Bill, you don't deserve that.
Bill's got a camera out now.
Obviously, we're done slicing, dicing, clipping.
He doesn't do people at the Thunderdome.
He saves that for his house.
Hey, you see those legs right there on Bill, AJ?
Motherfucker was under the bar this morning.
Yeah.
I walked into the Hawk House.
He was squatting 225.
Low.
Low.
Low.
Shoes off.
Shoes off.
Shoes off barefoot.
I was grounded.
Heeled to ground.
Or ass to ground.
Yeah, nuts.
All the way back up.
Front squat?
No.
No.
Putting the bar on his back.
Getting under bar.
I actually, I was right next to him.
I'm like, I feel like I got to fucking put the bar on his back. Getting on your bar. I was right next to him and I'm like, I feel like I gotta fucking put the bar on the back.
Lifted it.
Did two three-quarters things.
Get me the fuck out of here.
There's no way I'm doing that again.
Bill, you're an absolute
brick shithouse, Bill.
Stacked right now.
The Bill Gump tag team is really
undefeated. The best Gump tag team is really Undefeated
Always will be
How's team chemistry?
Never been higher
Me and Bill get along pretty well to be fair
To be fair
Bill doesn't show up in the gym in the morning
I mean that's it
That's when you know it's a bad day
We gotta help each other
We're accountable here That's what. That's when you know it's a bad day. Dump ribs. Hey, hey. You know, we got to hell each other accountable here.
We certainly do.
That's what we got to do.
I've been on a wall.
It's real early.
You were there this morning.
What are you talking about?
Yeah, early morning.
You got under bar.
Yeah, the issue is like that has become like Mackenzie hangout time.
Yeah.
You know?
So it's like I love that little girl.
Oh, yeah.
It's the best.
Dude, it is so cool.
Yeah.
It's a wild thing, like, not ever wanting to have a kid.
You know?
I was like, ah, lonely.
Die.
By myself.
Keep it moving.
Okay with that.
That didn't sound great.
I was okay with that, though.
I'm tough to deal with, dude.
Like, I am a tough person.
You know, I'm a lot.
A lot all the time.
Like, it is. This is how this is going to go. I'm going to be alone. No kids. But, boy, I'm tough to deal with, dude. Like, I'm a tough person. You know, I'm a lot. A lot all the time.
Like, it is.
This is how this is going to go.
I'm going to be alone.
No kids.
But, boy, I'm going to be a blast.
You know, like, people are going to say, this is a good time.
This is a good time.
This is a good time.
Probably going to die young.
We keep it moving.
You know, like, that is literally just completely okay with that.
And then now, like, experiencing Mackenzie, it's like, what the fuck was I thinking?
What was I? You just don't know until you actually have a kid.
Yeah, good point.
You have no idea.
And then it's like, oh, yeah, this is fucking awesome.
Well, then this first three weeks happen and you go, wow.
Yeah?
Yeah.
What is happening here?
This is how it is?
And then now, you know, in every single day,
watching a human develop such a basic thing,
like just the most basic of things,
developing it is like so cool
to watch. It's like, yeah, yeah, you're doing great. And then every once in a while, you know,
she'll showcase a great stubborn attitude. And I'm like, yeah, let's keep that, you know, let's
keep need that we need. Let's keep this up. She'll be loud, you know? And I'm like, yes,
yep. Let's, let's, let's not be, let's not be scared to, you know, talk a like yes yep let's let's let's not be let's not be scared to you know talk a
little bit let's not be scared to have energy let's not be scared to you know be a little
stubborn and an she'll take that food and she'll look at you and then she'll take it like
this and then she'll go like this and then she'll just drop it to the dog. And it is hilarious.
And I laugh every time.
Sam, obviously, you know,
come on, we gotta, like, she has to,
I will, I will become a parent
that is gonna hold her accountable.
I will, okay?
That will happen.
But it does seem like at this stage,
I am a very entertained father.
Everything that she does that is seemingly, you is seemingly not great for maybe other parents,
I'm like, yes, let's keep doing that.
No diaper on?
Well, you're going to pay for that.
I'm going to piss right here.
It's like, I love that you did that.
I appreciate that you were like, hey, this is on you.
This is on me.
Going to be a lot to handle.
I think teacher's probably going to, you know know that's on them good i do appreciate them but like everything that and i
think the reason why is when i was a kid everything that i did was basically said like this is not
dude don't don't be like hey slow down stop that slow down be quiet like that's what usually kids
hear yeah but like my mom was all like the one who went to bat for me like everywhere like nah
let's keep them nah let's do that so like i want to make sure that like my daughter knows like hey if you got something to
say fucking say it confidence teaching confidence like breathe somehow like i'm always trying to
like infuse confidence into all my kids yeah respect though you know i will will want mckenzie
to have more respect than i had for people that is something that i did not just automatically
have for a lot of people and that is on me that is a as i don't naturally just have respect for
people that i think uh it's been that way my whole life too i real problem real problem it's okay what
do you mean that's okay they gotta you know you gotta prove they gotta earn it yeah but as a
sixth grader you're a real fucking asshole to be like, this person has to earn
my respect.
I could see how, you know what I mean?
Like there is, I had to be impossible to deal with.
If I had to guess it all ended up working out, but like, I can't wait to watch her continue
to grow like every day.
And I'll go to work or something like college game day, game day is coming up.
So I'll miss her for a day every week, you know, which was also a massive piece of the
entire decision-making process. It's like, do I want to do that or not? And it's like, when I get back
from like a day trip or two day trip, it's like, is this a new, what are the new tricks? Oh, we
got a new sound. Oh, we're real curious now. Okay. Here we go. Oh, we're dragging me around the house
now. Like every single, we can take a few steps. Don't have confidence yet. Need to build up the
confidence until I get to confidence. So you need to get your fat ass up because we are running laps
around this house i'm like yep we need the energy let's keep the energy going i don't know how you
have 10 kids like you but like yeah it might as well be 10 though that sounds like 10 in my head
i don't know how anybody does it but it's like the coolest thing it is the coolest thing it's yeah yeah i never
thought about having kids until we had our first my daughter yeah i you have no clue until you have
them and then you're like oh okay this is what i was supposed to do yeah legit right it does feel
like that and then she's she looks too much like me we need to stop that she needs to look like
your mom okay that needs to happen but whenever you do see your face, and, like, there'll be, like, some features that, like, I remember, like, from looking in the mirror when I was a kid.
It's, like, a very weird, it's, like, a very weird, like, oh.
Like pictures, you see old pictures of yourself.
Oh, shit.
Look, exactly.
Yeah, and then I go back to, like, the, there was, like, a 3D ultrasound that was made of her.
And it's, like, i look at it i'm like
you can see her in there like you can you know what i mean like from her whenever she was a
profile you can see the profile a little bit at times like their nose what it might look like
yeah and you go back to like baby photos like when she was you're like oh i can see her like what
she's beca and then now i'm like trying to project like what is she gonna look like needs not look
like that how do we change that is there anything we can give her to drink going to look like? Needs not look like dad. How do we change that?
Is there anything we can give her to drink?
To not look like dad?
She houses milk, bro.
I mean, we're taking bottle upside down.
Oh, yeah.
Build those bones.
Head flipped back like this.
It is sweet.
Yesterday, we have a lot of dogs.
She's been watching dogs.
We need to stop that.
She picked up the bottle with her mouth and flipped it upside down and then started drinking it's a good trick i was like stop taking shots stop paying attention to dogs let's let's slow down a little bit this goes in um
we'll give away 10 copies of ten's book okay i love that and what that'll be will be a gift card
for the store for $5. Perfect.
So you won't be able to buy anything else other than a book.
Yes.
Congratulations to 10 people.
It's a good idea.
Tony, anything to say to these people that are potentially going to get gifted this phenomenal guide that you put hours of work into?
I normally don't root for you to make these for the giveaways, but this feels like the proper amount of money to give away to the people. A lot of the boys don't like money exiting company for others.
Would rather keep money in company, which I do respect and appreciate.
But the people are a part of the company, aren't you?
Aren't they?
They are.
Aren't they, AJ?
Oh, yeah.
We're all one big family.
Yeah, some of the winners not, though.
Like some of the winners.
Definitely not.
Yeah, some of them.
I remember.
Most good, though.
Remember when we moved to East Bend? I remember. A some of the winners. Definitely not. Yeah, some of them. I remember. Most good, though. Remember when we moved
East Bend?
I remember.
A lot of things said.
The North was.
People were pretty mean.
Pretty mean.
Oh, yeah.
And then we said,
just wait until these people
get over it.
Then realize we don't change it.
That means that other side
is going to come then.
And they did.
They did.
And they have.
And they still are.
And they certainly are. And they certainly
are. There was a lot of that
Austin Rivers reel that went up. There was
a lot of people thought this show was going to change
on ESPN. And then I saw some
people say, this is who they fired people
for. Yeah, so it's never ending.
Never ending. Fun to be here. Great to be here.
And when our time's up, we will acknowledge it and
disappear. That's right.
Oh, no! Football season. Yeah, I know. and when our time's up we will acknowledge it and disappear that's right oh no football season
football season yeah i know yeah this one you saw a step dude oh yeah you're right you know
Oh, shit.
That was... Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
Ten people will win a gift card to buy the guide that Tone Diggs wrote about this upcoming
college football season from store.patmackfyshow.com.
Tone, great work in here.
We're down time, buddy.
Thank you.
You as well, boys.
All you have to do is repost this video, say something nice to somebody, and yeah, we'll
reach out to you via DM and make that whole whole thing happen probably come from bruce or phil you know those
will be the people uh fulfillment for this one should be pretty quick but normal fulfillment
whenever it's 500 about a week or two you know because there is a little bit of a traffic jam
with some of these apps and how much money we can hand out and how much we can't but we're
incredibly lucky that everybody watches us and allows this show to exist so we always do giveaways even though comment I don't love
a great show today thanks well do D butts what a week out of you boys in the back way to go
people way to go bill a graphics crew really don't it yeah mm-hmm we're almost completely
out on the graphics crew remember that oh yeah We're almost completely out on the graphics crew. Remember that?
There was almost a whole new graphics department.
But instead,
answered the bell,
came all the way back, crushing it.
Going into the season two.
Innovative, new ideas, making things look better and bigger.
We can't thank...
Hey, we're humming right now.
Here we go, boys.
It's goal time.
Close. Be a friend. Tell a
friend something nice. It might change their life. We're in this thing together.
Team on beat. Team on three.
One, two, three, team. Goodbye.
