Hello, beautiful people, and welcome to our humble abode, the Thunderdome.
On this prime Arlen Eve Thursday, August 22nd, 2024, this program starts now.
Football!
Is, uh, I don't know.
Real football that really matters in a real championship hunt is happening in two days.
Here we go.
Okay?
Let's all look alive here.
Let's not just tap on our microphones and cause a disturbance to everybody.
Let's look alive.
Ladies and gentlemen, here, college football national champion,
live at the Thunderdome, A.J. Hawk.
Hawker!
That's a microphone, A.J.
You know, people can't hear it.
And just like whenever you were playing rock band back in the day,
when you just play the drums on that son of a bitch, we do hear it.
So you are loud and clear, AJ.
So are your hands on that entire thing.
But football, college football, kicks off in Ireland in just two days.
Now, tonight there will be a couple preseason games.
And this game taking place in Ireland, in Publin.
Cannot wait to get over there.
Our show will be live from J.R. Mahon's tomorrow, 5 p.m. local,
on a Friday in Ireland.
So, I mean,
5pm Friday,
okay, anywhere. So, you're gonna find it.
5 o'clock tomorrow.
Come on.
Yeah, boom. Right there.
But then you just drop it. Oh, it's in
Ireland. Yeah, but where? In Dublin,
Ireland. It's like, okay, we understand
what's about to take place.
Can't wait for that.
We're going to celebrate football being for real the next day.
And we hope you'll join us if you're over in the area, J.R. Mahans.
Mahans.
Mahans.
I still don't know how to fucking pronounce it, but it is that place.
And it looks awesome.
Zito's over there already with Foss.
They've run through a little technical run. We're going to be able to make a connection work.
We did blow out all
of their power supply.
With our shit, too much.
Had to get a converter, had to dumb it down, had to
get the generator, but obviously
we were wasting energy, didn't need it. The Irish
had the perfect amount of energy that was needed
because the stream that we got run through the Thunderdome
this morning from over there, fantastic.
The bar looks amazing.
It is going to feel as if we are
in an Irish pub because
guess what? We will be.
And there will be a lot of those. But tonight
there's a couple preseason games happening as well.
The first one on prom
of the year. Obviously Al Michaels
and Kirk Herbstreit and the entire team are back.
Hardtongue on the sideline. The kickoff show
I believe with Carissa Thompson,
Big Witt, Richard Sherman, Gonzalez, and Fitz. We'll be doing their thing with all
the reporters and all the stories. They get their first run at this particular
NFL season. We can't wait to watch the Colts beat the Bengals in Cincinnati. Out
of the two games that are taking place, the Colts are the only team that will be
playing their starters. This is the third preseason game.
Shane Steichen, I assume, would like to see a little bit more.
Haven't had as much production from
the starters. And then yesterday's story came
out of Cincinnati that the
boys on the Bengals were laughing the Colts off the
field because how bad they were at football.
I don't love that. Not one bit.
But tonight, that can all change with Herbstreet and
Al Michaels on the call. And then Kansas City
will be playing in the other preseason game against the Bears.
And Carson Wentz is going to be on TV, so that means it's going to be must-watch.
Yep.
You have no idea what he's going to do.
His highs are incredibly high.
His lows are incredibly hilarious.
So in there is a lot of entertainment, especially for a preseason football game.
And that dude, West Virginia boy, Bagant, Bajant, whatever his name is, Tyler,
great hair, good moxie, good flow., whatever his name is. Tyler. Great hair. Good moxie.
Good flow. Teammates love
him. Saw hat crooked.
Hair out. Quarterback
back up. Sitting down.
Holding court. Having a conversation. This dude
is beloved in the locker room.
And if you heard the way his dad talked on Hard Knocks,
you'd understand why. This dude's a dog.
We got a couple real games
tonight. We'll talk about college ball we'll talk about the
talks at table being here and looking amazing at boston connor at ty schmidt con man heading back
to the homeland pal how do you feel yeah truly cannot believe that we are here i've been looking
forward to this for at least a month now and it really is a perfect storm of sorts in dublin you
mentioned it friday five o'clock i mean there'll be some special guests that'll be coming by too that
are going to be incredible and just the
backdrop. You guys were doing your call earlier
kind of laying out the
scene, if you will, of where
we're going to be specifically at
J.R. Mahan's and the backdrop's
fantastic. It's going to be
biblical. I cannot wait. I need to get
over there right now. I'm just looking forward
to being in Ireland because it really is a lot of people don't talk about it
when you're talking about countries just in europe you can put it there at the top i'd say
i feel like especially you know some countries like italy uh you know even like a sweden those
countries sure they might be cool they might have a lot of history it's not like ireland
so obviously you're an Irish fella.
My name's Patrick McAfee. I, too, also...
You get it, man. I think that
particular country, small
in land mass, think about all the
creations. Just
go back in time. The amount of
mix that are running
around everywhere.
It's a beautiful thing. Can't wait to get back over there. I think I'm
going to learn a lot about my potential family's history over there as well
as we kick off the college football season for real.
Speaking of the college football season for real and the NFL season for real,
let's go to one half of the hammer.
Don, Cowboys, Tone Diggs.
College ball obviously starting in a few days.
NFL preseason still taking place.
What should we be thinking about?
Yeah, NFL preseason tonight.
You mentioned the Colts are the only ones playing.
Their start is a quarter and a half going against the
Bengals. Jake Browning, who was the
came in after Joe Burrow
last year, he will also not be going for
the Bengals because he got hurt. I believe
it's Logan Woodside will be getting the start for the
Bengals tonight. So something to look for
there. And then as you mentioned. Six and a half, huh?
That's all? We got guys going a quarter
and a half? Yeah. They got the third stringers
going at six and a half.
Are the sportsbooks listening to what the chatter is around these joint practices?
I hope so. Probably.
I don't like that at all.
This feels like a good one.
This feels like a safe one.
I mean, the Colts, if they go AR and then Flacco and then Ellinger has just been dominant in the preseason the last few years.
And then, you know, the guy out of Kansas, the man, the myth, the legend.
I'm starting to think Bean needs to actually grab the bean pole
and start climbing up the gap chart.
He is awesome.
If you just so happen to be sticking around until the fourth quarter
of a Colts preseason game, which I have the last couple weeks.
God, times are tough, man, huh?
We're pounding the drum for the four-stringer here.
We got the baby, you know, the wife.
We got a big, busy season.
We did it last year with Malik Cunningham.
So we're hanging out.
Amen.
Of course, but we're hanging out.
Yeah, he was great, too.
They're going to change the entire offense for that.
But if you're hanging around to the fourth quarter, okay,
and watching the Colts preseason, it's been a treat
because Jason Bean has been phenomenal.
We're talking throwing darts,
like absolute darts to people that I've
obviously never heard of, playing against people I've never
heard of, but everybody talks about, well, the competition's
four stringers. Who's he playing with?
He's not playing with, and he has
walked them. I'm talking
Shane Steichen has to be like, yeah, this is what I'm supposed to
do. This is literally. Got our party.
I love Joe Flacco. Joe Flacco's going to go on a run for
the Colts, I assume, this time.
At some point this season, just because of how long the season is
and potential injuries that have taken place all over the place.
But, boy, I really like this bean.
I mean, I'm liking the bean, dude.
Give him a chance.
He's a playmaker.
He really is an absolute dog.
And then there was something else that was happening around the college football world.
Kind of big news in the college betting world, college football betting world.
West Virginia Mountaineers
last week were
like plus 10.5, plus 11
at home to Penn State.
It's down to 8. Mountaineers are now
minus 8 in Morgantown.
Plus 8, yeah, I got it.
You said Mountaineers. It's Penn State's favorite
but it's still on the road in Morgantown.
For now. They might be State's favorite. Correct. On the road in Morgantown. For now.
They might be minus eight by next week.
It might drop down. What does this mean?
What does this mean, though?
People love the Mountaineers against Penn State in Morgantown.
What happened?
What changed?
Nothing that I know of.
What the fuck's your problem?
Just let them compliment the Mountaineers.
I just need to know what changed.
I mean, that's a drastic change in line.
Almost three points.
How about this?
Did someone get hurt?
How about this?
I don't know if this is going to change anything. I don't know if this is going to change anything.
I don't know if this is going to change anything.
Our show will be live in Morgantown, West Virginia on Friday.
Okay.
Okay.
Our show will be live in Morgantown, West Virginia next Friday
right before Penn State tries to walk into Morgantown
and get a home opener.
Biggest home opener for the West Virginia Mountaineer football team since 1998.
Wow.
1998.
For Y2K.
This team has got bingo.
That was all a big steal, which feels like there's a lot.
But nonetheless, a lot of years since somebody like Penn State
tried to walk in.
Opening weekend?
You have got to be kidding me.
They don't even understand what these Morgantown Faithful are going to be like.
Our show's live noon Eastern.
I think we're going to be near the Life Science Center building.
It's where the original stadium was in Morgantown, West Virginia.
This all kind of came together a little bit late,
so some of the spots not necessarily great,
but that is a very easy to get to spot.
And it's right near the old Mutt's.
Which is a place that I almost ended every single night of my life in Morgantown at.
And it's near the new Mutt's, which I had no idea existed, but it's still holding the entire thing down for all of Mutt's. So next Friday we'll be live there.
Then we're obviously going to have to hop on a plane, go to Texas A&M,
because that's where College Game Day is on Saturday.
But in our eyes, obviously, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, massive.
Penn State, West Virginia is a huge game.
Implications for the rest of the season on both sides.
Yeah.
On both sides.
West Virginia beats Penn State week one.
Oh, my God.
James Franklin.
James Franklin, this is another year of this.
And in the Big 12, which is wide open, everybody's saying,
hold on. This West Virginia team that doesn't
have anybody in the top 100 players
list that Neil Brown is pulling from
and talking shit to. Even though we've got a couple
first-rounders on there, we've got a lot of returners.
We've got Garrett Green, who has a lot of successful football
under his belt. And they've got to
come into Morgantown. That's going
to be maybe a tough game.
Now, if Penn State blows out West Virginia,
now we're all...
What was the score?
It's in Morgantown. Don't worry about the question.
It's a different game.
33-18.
It's not bad.
33-18, we'll take that.
Well, we will not take that.
It was a noon kick, though.
It's going to be lively.
Yeah, so that is an issue.
I thought this was a night game all along.
Sure.
Like literally the entire time.
And my goal and plan was, okay, we'll do a show in Morgantown on Friday,
fly down to Texas A&M to do game day meetings and game day or whatever,
and then flying back to Morgantown to watch this Penn State-West Virginia game
in primetime.
But it's noon.
It's a noon game.
It's a big noon kickoff.
It's the noon game.
So, you know, not necessarily
pumped that I won't be able to see it.
Don't love that it's not at night in Morgantown.
Different world down there at night.
But also, I mean, if you frame it
in a different manner, AJ,
which I know you would never do
because it's the Mountaineers,
Penn State might not even be awake yet.
You know, at noon.
Might be tired.
Yeah, they come out there, like warm-ups.
It might be – you played a few of those games, right,
where it's kind of hazy.
You go out there for a noon kickoff.
There's like 19 people in the stands.
For warm-ups, not for the game.
Yeah, not for the game.
Just for warm-ups.
Like I'm saying 90 minutes before the game, 60 minutes before the game.
Then all of a sudden, you know,
maybe you can get a team on their heels a little bit.
They've come out a little dead like, man, we need some juice.
We've got to bring our own juice today.
Maybe they don't bring it.
Yeah, not that West Virginia needs any advantages.
That's a home field advantage.
Hold on.
That is one of the advantages.
But that stadium is going to be rocking.
Absolutely.
From, I think, 10 a.m. allm all the way through pat when they come out for
warm-ups they're going to feel the par you're right you know of that west but you might not
want to because then penn state might get engaged in oh here we go guys this is it you're saying
don't wake them up don't wake them up maybe just stay a little subdued or stay in the parking lot
until the last minute and then fly in there for the kickoff anyways everybody seems to love uh
west virginia i guess at this moment and morgantown's a tough place to play and i think if you look up the records of like a double digit
point favorite verse wvu in morgantown over like the last however many years it's a tough place but
a lot to be said for that now let's also talk a little college football uh controversy
now as we try to get the authority on the phone to really break this down from a nuts and bolts
standpoint, all I know is
the tweet that I read. Iowa Hawkeye
football team cheating.
Ty? Oh, no.
What happened? What's going on in Iowa?
I thought Iowa was...
By the book? Is it their book?
What book? Honorable. It's got to be their book,
right? Is that what they think? So it's not by the book?
Their rules? It's by their book
what's going on in iowa kirk is suspended whoa erroneous on all counts i mean i've i tweeted
it is a daggum witch hunt i don't like it it's bullshit uh so basically you know what happened
was when kade mcnamara transferred from michigan to i Iowa. He committed to Iowa like three days after he transferred,
so I think they're saying, hey, there's some improprieties
in how you guys contacted this guy, how you went about doing it.
Someone doesn't just decide to go to Iowa three days after they transfer,
unless you play in the Big Ten.
You know what brand of football Iowa plays, and obviously you will.
Which, Cade?
Yeah, exactly.
And also, this happened two years ago.
Why the hell are we suspending Kirk now?
I mean, there's got to be some sort of statute of limitations on this.
It's bullshit.
Also, if you cheat, you should be able to get away from it for so long.
I mean, it'd be one thing if Dylan—
He's cheating, yeah.
Cade McNamara was wanted everywhere, wasn't he?
Oh, yeah.
But he said—
That is not true, and you know it.
Cade McNamara said, you know what?
I will reach out to me first.
Before I was even close to transferring, Kirk Ferentz called me and said,
why don't you hit that portal, kid?
We got something for you.
Is that what they're saying happened?
I mean, essentially.
You know, it would be one thing if Dylan Gabriel transferred to Iowa,
you know, instead of going to Oregon from Oklahoma.
I mean, you've seen the footage of Cade McNamara so far.
Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen,
is the man who probably has a little bit more intel on the entire situation,
the authority of college football, Pete Fanwell.
Yeah, Pete!
Pete's in public!
Pete, before we go any further,
I would like to show people a photo that I got from Ireland.
Pete's been at Peter's Pub. We don't know what's going on with pete this might be a little loosey-goosey authority
but we do appreciate the hell out of you uh calling from ireland you look amazing pete
how's the weather is it good uh it's like a late october south bend uh autumn mist oh nice
we got a lot of rain jackets coming on from
our side. Autumn mist. Sounds like we'll need it.
Yeah, well, you know, Pete didn't come prepared
I guess like a lot of the boys here are going to be
toting their rain jackets around town.
I can't wait to see how it works out.
Pete, I know this is back stateside
that's happening in the heartland
in Midwest and Iowa.
Kirk Ferentz was cheating?
Is that what i heard
why is he suspended a game and this seems pretty petty doesn't it with everything else that we've
kind of heard or where's your stance on this pete what do we need to know about it so my sources
have told me that ty had an elaborate scheme with corn syrup that he was selling on the black market
and funneling cash to the iowa wow wow i would yeah yeah actually it was just kind of run-of-the-mill Oh! Wow. Wow. I would. Yeah, absolutely.
Actually, it was just kind of run-of-the-mill tampering.
I think we're going to see a few of these as the season heats up here.
Look, everyone tampers, and those who get caught, it's hard to get caught,
but they clearly have gotten caught enough to, I think,
where they saw the caliber of the opponent in the opener and said,
you know what, we'll fall on the sword here,
take the game suspension, and then move on to pick 10 play.
So I know all of your Illinois State fan audience might be offended by that,
but that seems to be what happened here.
They were –
Roll birds.
Exactly.
Roll birds.
Zito actually, Illinois State, not student, but he lived on campus
and told people he was a student.
Never enrolled, never had to pay for those stupid classes, but he got a chance to do the college, just not actually do any of the education.
Yeah, he kind of figured it out.
He's an interesting cat.
He's in Ireland right now as well at J.R. Mahon's.
I think you should stop by, maybe buy him a pint.
You said that this is kind of run-of-the-mill tampering.
It's going to happen to a lot of people. We should be expecting to hear that relatively soon because this is from
two years ago. So is this all just going to kind of unroll and then hopefully the NCAA is excited
to move past this as more rules are kind of set? Is that kind of the framework here we need to
think about it? Yeah, so Alex Atkins, the offensive coordinator for Florida State, is suspended for
the first three games. And we're seeing a trend with the NCAA that they don't have a lot of arrows left in their swivel for punishment.
They used to say, OK, you can't take official visits. You would limit things in recruiting.
But all that stuff can get paid for now in this free market NIL era. So the game suspension is
literally one of the few things they actually have left as a punishment. So I'm not going to tell you that we're going to see like a flurry,
but I would think an assistant coach here and there who's been jammed up on
tampering stuff, we'll see some suspensions here as, you know,
with the season really kicking off, but with the full slate of games in,
what is it now, eight, nine days.
So I just think it's sort of cost of doing business at some places here.
And we'll see some consequences from that.
Okay. Nobody's going to remember this about Kirk. Nobody in consequences from that. Okay, nobody's going to remember this about Kirk.
Nobody.
In the grand scheme of things, nobody's going to remember this.
We're going to move on unless the birds come out and make a massive upset
because Kirk couldn't get them all riled up.
Ty, do you have any counter to anything you just said?
Would you like to clear the air before we move to the next subject?
Because there's somebody holding this camera for Pete right now in Dublin.
Sure.
I would just like to say, Pete, first of all, the whole corn syrup thing,
that's a little bit of a low blow, so I don't appreciate that.
I am very front-facing when it comes to putting money out there
for the Iowa program.
But in terms of a long-term issue here, Pete, do you see this kind of –
Iowa, obviously, maybe not going back to the transfer portal
because Kirk doesn't want to get pee-pee whacked again and miss a game or two
because everyone knows Kirk's an upstanding citizen.
He's one of the true good guys in college football.
Listen, and I don't know, you know, I mean, are they going to come at this guy
for being too much of a baller, maybe taking private jets for different recruiting visits?
That's what I'm concerned about, Pete, is does this basically, I don't know, and too much of a baller, maybe taking private jets for different recruiting visits.
That's what I'm concerned about, Pete.
Does this basically, I don't know, does it hamstring Kirk Ferentz recruiting in the portal in the future?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
I don't believe, Ty, it will hamstring Kirk from recruiting in the future. I think this will be a blip on a long, distinguished career,
and he will be back to recruiting
a preponderance of linebackers and
defensive tackles.
As we have known...
Preponderance.
Jeez, preponderance. Good for
you over there dropping in. Last question
here from Tone Diggs.
Is there big money?
Is there about to be?
Tone has a question for you.
Yeah, I do, Pete.
There's been an incredible line movement with Penn State and West Virginia today.
What?
I'm talking about prime with Saudi.
Oh.
Big money.
Yeah.
Big, big.
So we're talking bigger money.
Big money.
Yeah, that's what it is.
Yeah, there was a report that came out today that Colorado was looking for some Saudi money
for their NIL to go out and do what they need to do in the NIL world.
Have you looked into that?
What's going on there in Colorado?
That's a move.
So I have not looked into that specifically, but we're in an era where private equity is kind of circling around college athletics right now.
I remember coming on your show a couple months ago.
There was a Super League plan that is sort of predictably fizzled.
on your show a couple months ago there was a super league plan that is sort of predictably fizzled uh
the private equity market recognizes inefficiencies and how college sports are run and they recognize a lot of athletic departments are running debts and partners they have you know over 16 sports
that are essentially funded by one sport so it's sort of a massively inefficient model and uh as
long as this model continues there'll be financial issues and as long as there's financial issues
there'll be private equity wanting to insert itself okay and uh i appreciate just trying to
figure out how we can go about keeping up with some of the bigger places if you're not and you
don't have as much funding but boy if you get a never-ending supply of cash that feels like a
good thing to have in college sports and they said it's coach prime was a coach prime who
did the business who's was an incredible businessman.
Is it the AD?
Is it school?
Who's thinking?
I'm sure everybody's getting creative.
I'm excited to see what's real and what isn't all year long with the authority.
Pete Thamel from College Game Day.
Thank you, Pete.
See you tomorrow.
Hey, how was the flight over?
You know, from Boston, it wasn't bad.
It was five and a half, five hours basically so uh that's awesome
baby yeah that's not bad all right we'll see you over there it was it was good living have you
guys have you been having uh have you been having a couple pints over there 10 to 12
i uh i did uh i did a tour of the guinness factory yesterday and i've sampled uh i've
sampled more than one pint it is quite delicious over here as they say it tastes better right i
would i would agree with that assessment I'm happy that you've had
a few pints over there. Did you get the certificate?
I didn't get
the certificate. I didn't do the pouring.
Do you know about splitting the G, Pat?
No.
Will you please inform me
of splitting the G? I saw Stanford Steve
splitting the G. Yes.
We all learned this yesterday from
John Anthony, one of the gentlemen who runs the game.
So it says Guinness on the pint.
And if you take three gulps in one sip, your beer will settle right in between the G,
where it says Guinness on the pint.
And that is called splitting the G.
So three gulps, one sip in one pool?
Or is that like multiple pools?
Yes, in one pool.
No, in one pool.
You start it with the three gulps in one sip and put it down.
And you see where it achieves.
All gulps created equal?
So you drink it.
So you drink it.
All gulps are not created equal.
Yeah.
Well, that is fair.
What does that mean?
Three gulps.
Three gulps.
Some people can take one pint down in one gulp.
Yeah, well, I know one of those people.
He would be gulped.
I believe what happened was. I need more. can take one pint down in one gulp. Yeah, well, I know one of those people. He would be gobsmacked.
I believe what happened was the
Guinness Museum guy
that was running it, John Anthony, he
eyeballed Pete Thamel and said, you're going to need three
gulps and a sip.
I think it is a...
Maybe two. Yeah, it's like a playbook.
They kind of read the play. That's awesome.
Next time, two gulps, Pete, especially if you're hanging out at Peter's Pub.
Ladies and gentlemen, Pete Thamel.
Thank you, buddy.
Pete!

So it sounds like a big nothing burger with Iowa.
Yep.
That's right.
Like with Charlie Baker and stuff,
like isn't this the kind of stuff where they could probably just like,
does he need to be suspended for that? Like if it just like oh we're gonna have a bunch of this stuff like
isn't there a different way that they can kind of smack these guys on there i mean granted money
just take money that's all you can do that's what i mean but like uh you know missing the first game
of the season obviously isn't that big of a deal but like if if it's happening everywhere then like
why does it even need to be a thing? Why did
they have to? It's from two years ago. This seems
exactly like what the NCAA doesn't
want to be dealing with. Petty
seems very
low-hanging, especially with
what happened with Cade and has
happened with Cade. It's like, you think you could
just accidentally, oh, I don't see that file
anymore. The amount of tampering
or whatever they call it going on.
Of course, you're not going to
enter the portal unless you have a good beat on
somewhere else you might go. Yeah, so we would just
like to let the Iowa Hawkeye faithful
know that although we did talk shit too tight
relentlessly about Iowa
on a regular basis, we have
to. I mean, that's how this goes. That's the way it works.
That's the way this goes. But like
also, this is kind of bullshit.
Yeah, for sure.
Is it at Illinois State or at home?
It's at home.
But, again, it's one of those things, too, with, like, yeah, that.
But, like, he's going to get the wave.
Home opener, he should be in.
Yeah.
Yes.
Boom.
Coach.
He's going to be watching through Benox.
No, I think he should be.
Yeah, he should be waving back to the boys.
He will.
Yeah, absolutely.
And then give him a wave. Yeah. He will need it. What if he starts coaching from up, he should be. Wave it back to the boys. He will. Yeah, absolutely. And then give him a hit if you need it.
What if he starts coaching from up there?
He will.
A couple pass sets.
That'd be awesome.
Or maybe put him on top of the water tower, maybe.
Yeah, maybe.
Maybe on a zip line over top of the stadium.
Yep, exactly.
He just goes back and forth.
Is he suspended from the airspace?
You don't know.
No way.
We'll get to Charlie Baker.
We will ask Charlie Baker if he's allowed to be in a helicopter.
Well, I guess it's no-fly zone.
True.
Above stadiums.
But maybe we can try to get a license to get that.
Him just flying over top.
Make a call.
Put a call.
Blow horn.
Bull horn.
Yeah, bull horn.
Bull horn.
Hey, boys, it's me, coach.
Look up!
Like, we are.
Yeah.
Flying 100 feet above the fucking field, coach.
Yeah.
Anyways, Kirk will figure it out.
He will.
And I don't like that that happened.
Me neither.
Joining us now is a man who could potentially give us a little bit more insight on how many
more of these types of things he thinks is going to happen.
Pete Dammel just said that you could see a slew or a litany or a plethora of assistant
coaches potentially get, you said pee-pee whacked,
with the same as Pete Thamel.
So it's kind of all coming together.
But assistant coaches potentially get this tampering thing from years ago
because the transfer portal seems petty.
Kirk Ferentz is suspended for a game.
Joining us now has been the voice in the face of college football for the last 30 years.
Obviously mainstay on college game day.
Now he's also kicking off every NFL week on
Thursday night with Prime.
Ladies and gentlemen, Kirk Herbstreit.
Hey, Herbie!
How you doing, Herb? What's up? You got AJ
in the building. Yeah, a couple
Centerville Elk Legends on the
show right now.
One in the Thunderdome, one at home.
Home game tonight. You didn't even have to
go anywhere. What a run for you.
What a start for the prime season, huh?
I'm loving this.
Get to see your Colts here in this preseason game.
Actually, starters will play for the Colts, not the Bengals,
but the starters will be out there for the first quarter and a half,
maybe the first half total.
So that'll be good to see.
Colts got a good ball club.
If they stay healthy, it's all going to be about Anthony Richardson, obviously.
And we know that he's big and strong and athletic.
And having he and JT healthy, well, they had two snaps all last year.
So having them together, all going to come down to,
can he consistently read coverage?
Can he consistently deliver the ball accurately and make good decisions?
Because with this group of
receivers, along with the
threat of him and Taylor, Jonathan Taylor
running the football, there's a lot to be
excited about this team.
You're
high on the Colts, right? You're fired up about them?
I'm a little worried.
No more banner in the stadium.
What about beam?
You still got your suite down there?
What's going on?
I heard you guys, you get sideways down there?
Time, schedule, like, do I, you know, just a lot.
I got a lot going on with life right now, you know?
So, like, do I?
You get sideways with them?
I'm in an interesting predicament with the entire situation because, like.
What's going on there?
I'm going to be AJ. Since he's there, I'll be AJ. Thank you, Kurt. It's just, there predicament with the entire situation. What's going on there? I'm going to be A.J.
Since he's there, I'll be A.J.
Thank you, Kurt.
There's a lot, man.
And then, like, the most recent, it's like,
they got laughed off the field, allegedly, tomorrow at joint practice.
It's like, what is that even?
Did you hear about that?
Did you hear about that?
No.
That happened yesterday, I guess, at joint practice.
That was the report.
I was at the joint practice.
What do you mean laughed off the field? The reports were. And if you, oh guess, at joint practice. That was the report. I was at the joint practice. What do you mean, laughed off the field?
The reports were, and if you, oh, hey,
this is a big deal. If this is not
the case, you are going to, allegedly,
the Bengals, I heard, were talking
a little bit of trash about making him throw the
ball. All he wants to do is run. You talking about that?
Well, then, Coach Lou Anarumo
and the defense laughing hysterically
as Joe Flacco decided to run one
because they weren't getting enough work, pretty much.
Bro, Joe
Flacco, I don't know how
this sumbitch just keeps going.
Silky, silky
smooth. Yeah, very happy he got signed.
That's footsteps.
What a job of signing that guy.
Just in case, never know.
I mean, AR, we're all excited to
see what he's going to do, but if he gets hurt or you've got to go to a backup, never know. I mean, AR, we're all excited to see what he's going to do.
But if he gets hurt or you've got to go to a backup,
you had Minshew last year, this Joe Flacco,
he looked great the other day throwing the football.
And like I said, once Downs gets back,
because they're kind of playing around with that slot position,
once Downs gets back and he's healthy from the ankle.
So anyway, going back to the laughing, I didn't see any of that i think that's a bunch of bs um i i i think the bangles dbs might have been just clowning
a little bit having some fun but it was nothing at all okay good about anybody laughing okay i
want to let you know that settles uh that settles a lot of uh potential feelings about everything
how it's going because you know now now now, now. Joe Burrow looks really good.
Oh, great.
Colts secondary is good.
Joe Burrow.
Joe Burrow looks...
I don't want to say scary good, but...
Yeah, okay.
I don't know.
And Jamar Chase...
Even without Jamar, right?
Remains to be seen when Jamar Chase gets out there.
Okay, so he's locked in.
It feels like Joey B is on, like...
Joey B.
Keep in mind, dude.
Go back to his rookie year 20 with COVID
and then you go all the way through his entire career.
He's never had preseason, you know,
because he had the appendectomy.
He was recovering from an ACL.
He had COVID.
He had the calf last year.
First time that he's had a chance to actually be in camp.
And this guy is not like,
I'm Joe Burrow.
I don't need the reps he's like pat you
know he wants to work and he likes to grind and this is the first time now the one the one thing
is he hadn't been touched since the surgery to the wrist he's not been touched he's not gone down
you know you know how often a quarterback even gets hit after he throws it you go down the right
hand goes down to just kind of catch your fall hasn't done that so that's the one thing is he's got to get through but as far as
execution as far as ball out as far as the way he looks keep in mind this is a team that struggled
remember that calf last year they're kind of playing with one arm tied behind their back
would they start one in three until they kind of finally got him healthy?
So I think they're very, very optimistic about the offense
and the way Joe looks right now.
We won't see it tonight.
They're not, you know, Miles Murphy went down with a knee.
He's going to be out, you know, for about a month.
And so when that injury happened in that joint practice with the Colts,
I think Zach Taylor was kind of like, okay, shut it down.
We're shutting everything down.
We're not playing anybody on Thursday night.
Yeah, and it's the third preseason game.
I think that's going to be a trend for a lot of people.
Excited that we're getting the Colts starters tonight.
Hopefully they'll be able to get things going, you know,
because Bean has been the show for preseason thus far in fourth quarters,
Jason Bean out of Kansas, who we obviously love.
And going back to Joey B, like, they always have a slow start.
That's what they say.
Cincinnati, slow starter, slow starter.
Then you bring up the point, like,
that's like the start of his preseason normally at the beginning.
They're a different team whenever he gets rolling.
Excited to see if they can do that from the beginning.
And he's an Ohio guy.
Yes.
He'll be able to handle those for sure.
Yeah.
Teddy Karras brought up a good point.
He's the center for the Bengals.
Keep in mind, he's been around.
He's obviously with New England, and I know you guys know that.
But he brought up a good point about this camp's been more of a grind
as far as longer sustained drives for the first unit,
just out there, like make them go 12, 13 play drives and intentional
about that to just try to get them used to getting ready to go out and play in September,
you know, and I think they're pretty optimistic. Again, it all comes down for all these teams and
camp. Who's going to stay healthy, you know, especially up front at the line of scrimmage,
but, you know, the Colts are a team uh flipping it back over
to them i think their strength going in is going to be the line of scrimmage you know i think that
the defensive line and the offensive line i think the continuity now in the second year with shane
third year with gus bradley on the defense i just think the players especially these second year
guys they're playing faster there's less thinking going on, as you've seen,
being around this league for so long.
So there's both these teams, I think,
have reasons to be optimistic as they head into this season.
Hell yeah.
Can't wait to see how it all unfolds tonight on Prime.
And then immediately after that game,
you're going to be preparing to fly to Dublin, Ireland
for the kickoff of college football, which I am...
Yes! Hell yeah! We are pumped,
Kirk! We are pumped!
Two days into... Are you guys leaving
tonight? When are you leaving? We're leaving in
two hours. We are leaving in two
hours. And you're
doing a show. You lose
five hours, so you land...
5 a.m. You land 5 a.m.
And you're doing a show, right? Tomorrow?
Yeah, but we actually have a pretty
clean setup tomorrow.
So when we land, we're going to be able to sleep for a bit
and then we won't go do brunch or lunch
or go see some sights.
We can do that. Then we got game day
meeting. Then we got
head to J.R. Mahan's
and then 5 p.m. local on a
Friday show in Dublin,
and then right after that show, we just
kind of see where Dublin takes us.
We just kind of see where Dublin takes us.
Wow. That's going to be
great. Yeah, tomorrow, today,
I guess right now through
Saturday, straight shot.
Straight shot. Should be a pretty sick
Who's the leading
candidate to be burying those Guinness? Who's the leading candidate to be burying those Guinness?
Who is it?
I think everybody.
I think it's the plan.
Yeah, we got Seamus flying over with us from the WWE.
And he requested cans of Guinness for the flight.
Cold, please, obviously.
So I believe this man will probably be the Guinness king, you know, if I had to guess.
Yeah, I'm putting my money on him.
He looks like a winner.
Yeah, but I heard he doesn't drink anymore.
You know, that's what I heard.
Yeah, that's what people are saying.
I heard about that.
I heard he doesn't drink on Thursdays or Fridays, which is great.
That's a really good news.
Doesn't like beer.
Yeah, we're drinking waters the whole way over there.
So the only people that drink Guinness probably Coach Saban, who's already over there. Yeah. You know, probably Coach Saban, who's already over there. So the only people that are drinking Guinness probably Coach Saban,
who's already over there.
Yeah.
Probably Coach Saban, who's already over there.
Pete Thamel splitting the G.
Three gulps and a sip.
Look out.
Three gulps and a sip.
He's splitting the G over there at Peter's Pub.
Stanford Steve's donning some Guinness.
I mean, if any of us make it to Saturday, full strength.
I think that is a win in of itself.
But can't wait to celebrate college football starting.
Let's talk some college football, shall we?
Kirk, okay, you and I both heard Charlie Baker speak at that college
football conference. Phenomenal.
Like, made me
go from massive critic of the entire NCAA
to like, alright, I believe this guy
can figure some shit out. I believe this guy's
brain... You were sitting right next to me. We were
in the back back there, and I think we were both
kind of elbowing each other like,
like, what's going on here? We were expecting yeah did he did he did he and i think
you even grabbed the mic and said no one's been a bigger critic of yours than me yeah you know and
he kind of got a kind of laughed about it and then we were just yeah i think everybody of the two days
we all walked out of that seminar thinking, what's going on with Charlie Baker?
I mean, he was an impressive guy. At one point, he was sitting like this, just so we can get this
point clear. Suits are taught how to act, okay? You go to school. How are they supposed to act?
Well, you're supposed to do this, and you're supposed to not say anything, and you're supposed
to just repeat thoughts that you've been told and send those things out there.
You're not supposed to have any self-awareness
or feel. Don't worry about the moment.
It's all in execution. Don't worry about anything else.
Charlie Baker, open to the room,
turn sideways on his chair,
leg on
armrest
like this
while he was talking.
Cool dude. It was fucking awesome. I'm like, this guy, he's a human. Feels like he while he was talking. Cool dude. It was fucking awesome.
I'm like, this guy, he's a human.
Feels like he's an actual human. That was like
30 minutes in.
It was a pretty long little stay.
I walked past him on my way and didn't
know it was him. I had no clue it was him.
Knew that, who did the interview?
Pete? I think Pete did the interview.
Pete Thamel. I think Petey Thamel
brought that one out. Yeah, so I come into the back of this room it's like a you know
like a presentation type room uh let's say like 100 people in there okay 100 people seats for 94
about 100 people okay so that entire thing is uh you bring some seats from the hallway and you do
that so we're in the back room we're in the back of the room near one of the entrances perfect by
the way perfect once we pull those chairs in perfect set up for us in the back of the room. Near one of the entrances. Perfect, by the way. Perfect. Once we pulled those chairs in, perfect setup for us in the back back there.
Bathroom was right around the hook.
I could get up and kind of pace because I was losing feeling in my legs and my brain at certain times.
But all of it was very good information.
So let's say this thing starts at 8 a.m. or 9 a.m.
I forget which one it was.
I come in 59, whatever it was before.
And I see Pete Thamel all suited and booted.
Of course. He's in the authority.
And the only reason why I'm there is because Pete Thamel was speaking.
I didn't know who he was speaking. I thought you were
day one guy and out. I
was shocked that you came back
day two. Thank you. Pete Thamel was
the only reason why. Pete Thamel, I didn't know he
was doing a Q&A with Charlie Baker. I knew
he was doing whatever he was doing. So literally
as I walk in, I see Pete Dammel handshake
you're going to fucking kill it. And then
I just walk and sit down in the thing.
He was in a circle. That was
Charlie Baker that I literally
backed and shook hands.
Did not know it was Charlie Baker. Did not know the NCAA guy
was going to be there. But then as soon as I think you were
the one that told me he was going to be talking to Charlie Baker, the NCAA guy
and I turn and I see him and I'm like, oh this guy
has to think I'm the biggest fucking asshole but for everything i've said and then wow
so is there a new rule on the f word it seems like that's flying here between 12 and 2
i've been unplugged here for a bit is that is that right yeah it's kind of like a new
we just kind of let that i i thought you guys used to keep track like oh that's one yeah we did
and then we get then we slash i just we we started
getting killed for everything so then it was just kind of like all right fuck it yeah so that is
that yeah so i just that's how we got here that that's how that's how we got here what do you mean
i don't mean to interrupt you charlie big what do you mean you get killed for everything oh you know
you know which leads to uh anyways he gave a speech yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah you know. You know. You know. Which leads to, anyways,
he gave a speech.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You know,
do one of those too.
Do one of those too.
Because there's,
yep,
I don't think,
yep.
How come the balloons
sometimes go off?
They're watching you,
Kirk.
It's technology.
It's potentially Florida State.
But nonetheless,
that guy hated me on the way in
for sure,
knew of me.
NCAA is headquartered here
in Indianapolis. And I've been very NCAA is headquartered here in Indianapolis.
And I've been very, since college, I've buried these people.
Literally.
Like as much as possible, loud as possible.
Since college, I've been very consistent with hating this NCAA.
Why do you hate them in college?
Because Pat White, Steve Slayton, Owen Schmidt built that entire place.
Couldn't get a dollar.
If they happen to get a handshake maybe at a bar so they could buy 100 rounds of shots,
Pat White, Steve Slayton get in trouble
and they're done even though everybody's
making millions of dollars off them. I thought that was
bullshit. They made us do a five-hour meeting
before every single season telling us
how terrible of people we are
and how we have to act in their code
when everybody else who's making money off of this
isn't doing that at all. I thought it was
all petty. I thought it was stupid.
I thought it was out of touch.
You think that's what drove you to your business
and the way you run your operation now,
just being that experience?
Selling cigs in fifth grade,
I think that kind of leads.
I've always had a product.
Let's move it.
Let's sell it.
Let's do this.
Really?
Value, always.
Yeah, always wanted,
because I wanted grape juice, Kirk.
I wanted the a grape juice kirk yeah i wanted the goddamn juice what's that but i just mean just witnessing that whole experience of
seeing because you refer to that a lot people making money you know all these guys are making
money we're not making any money you're making the rules we're kind of falling in line it just
seems like that one really dug in deep for you yeah tim mcfee woke up at like 4 a.m got back at
like 6 30 p.m. every single day,
then drove me to practice,
which was like an hour and a half away,
and got paid shit.
And then I see like his bosses
who are not grinding away like Tim McAfee,
living like kings.
And they're very nice people.
And thank you for the work in that entire thing.
So I think it all comes from that.
Lay away things at Hills
that cost like 70 bucks for Christmas,
watching my mom go through that entire thing with how much work she put into
as a secretary.
It's like,
that's where it all comes from.
But nonetheless,
I fucking murdered Charlie Baker for a long,
long time in the NCAA.
He gave one speech.
And I think the future is going to be very,
very bright in the NCAA,
but this Iowa Hawkeye thing,
this feels like petty and dumb to do the Kirk Ferentz suspension for one game
for something that happened like two years ago.
And one of the things that Charlie Baker told us in that speech that I loved
that he was giving to us, it was like he basically was like,
we're done doing the petty stuff.
Like I'm sick of us having to deal with the petty stuff.
Whenever this injunction hits, we're going to be able to move forward
and all this other stuff that kind of makes us look bad
and looks like we're over punishing for things just to and then this happens to Kirk
Ferentz this morning it's like this is from two years ago with a player that hasn't really done
anything and we assume everybody has been doing the exact same thing they just so happen to be
the ones that got caught up in this conversation like what exactly was the violation um he was
tampering allegedly with Cade McNamara before he hit the transfer portal.
So they investigated because why in hell would anybody say?
I heard AJ say everybody, most guys, not everybody,
because there's a lot of guys sitting in the portal with nowhere to go.
But most guys, you know, them or their parents or their agents,
somebody's talking to Iowa as an example. And, hey, you know, you or their parents or their agents, somebody's talking to Iowa as an example,
and, hey, you know, you guys got an opening there.
I'd love to come in there and compete.
Hey, you got to enter the portal.
And once you enter the portal, that happens all the time.
Agreed.
That's the way.
Maybe there's more to it.
Maybe there's more to it.
I don't know.
Ty, do you know?
Ty, is there more to this?
I don't think so. But, Kirk, ty is there more to this or is that i don't think so
but kirk you would know more than a lot of people like how how revered kirk ference is and in college
football how good of a guy he is like truly is the best yeah not a piece of shit he's a great guy but
when i was reading this like and and pat said all the like these things about charlie baker and how
the ncaa is trying to turn things around do you think part of it though is that the ncaa kind of craves scandal because like last year with like the michigan stuff like that
crosses boundaries and gets people who aren't you know who couldn't care less about college football
like they're at least kind of paying attention to it like it gets into like the cultural landscape
like so i feel like while they can try to eliminate some of this stuff like at the end of the day like
this kind of stuff has been going on in college football for so long and i think that is part of what a lot of
people who maybe aren't a huge fan of what happens on the field like that's why they they like
following college football because there's always this type of shit on the fringes yeah i i don't
know about that they're intentionally trying to do that. I do think that they still have some archaic rules that Charlie talked to us about trying to eliminate.
I don't know the specifics here.
I don't know if Iowa is the one that, you know, whatever they did.
You know, I think it still kind of falls in that area of this is the way of the new world.
You know, these guys that leave these schools,
I mean, I talk to coaches that they're worried
when the game is over and they go to shake hands
that the other assistant coaches are talking to the backup players
on the team about, hey, man, I got you.
I'll hit you up after the season.
You know, if you're not happy, we got, like,
there are coaches currently in college football that say that happens. how is that not tampering um and think about it feel
stupid yeah it does i mean you know the biggest issue to me and then we can move on i want to
watch you and aj do like a sumo wrestling thing there on the court but i i definitely don't
understand i still have a problem with the't understand i still have a problem with the
collectives i still have a problem with hey let's all put 20 million dollars into a pot
and let's go bribe high school players and pay them as much as we can to get them to or let's
go get a player from a smaller school and he don't want to stay let's just say bowling green or
southern miss let's go get him he's an all-american Let's go bribe him. And like that, that I don't get.
I get C.J. Stroud being a superstar, name, image and likeness. He can make a lot of money. Caleb
Williams, superstar, make millions of dollars off name, image and likeness. That's what the
rule is intended for. But I wish they'd focus on these collectives and these guys bribing kids
to come pay for their
schools that that has to go in college sports so there was like a mountaineer collective at West
Virginia they asked me uh to if they could use you know my name image and likeness on the board
of the entire thing for West Virginia and I was like what do I what do I need to do they're like
ah no we might just have you reach out or whatever. We got a big donor
that's going to do it and money that's going to do it
and then we're just trying to even the playing field
with the big schools on
being able to guide money. Now, I think
they were doing it and have been doing it for players
on the team, trying to manage
the roster and keep people on
the team, but I assume there has been some recruiting
that has happened with it all
and it's like, I think that's why this injunction that's supposed to be approved by a judge
in Q1 gives like the actual salary cap. And people have been saying it's 20 million,
20 million, 20 million. I think he said 20% of the school's revenue, I think,
I think is what I heard. I don't remember, but it's 20 million is what
everybody's saying it is. I think they're hoping that that ends up becoming this.
That'd be great. Wouldn't it be great if NIL still was there with the rev share? Like the
rev share has to happen. It's great. It makes a lot of sense. Do it. Let's just argue for now.
Let's just say it's 20 million that you have now to basically look at your roster. And the roster
goes from 85 scholarships eventually to, you know, you can have up to 120 on your team.
Now you're going to go from 85 scholarships to you could go all the way up to 105, but you can't have 106.
So you're now going to have a ceiling on your roster of 105 with the ability to go up to 105 scholarships instead of 85. But you won't have
the walk-ons if you go up to that number. The hope is with the rev share that the NIL will go
back to being what it was intended to be. I can't imagine it. These schools that have been bribing
kids, you're going to tell them, okay, you can't bribe kids anymore. They're going to keep doing that, you know, until there are actual consequences. But then there's the threat of
litigation. And anytime anybody threatens to get sued, oh, whoops, OK, you're right to go do
whatever you want to do. So I don't know how we're going to get there unless you get a collected
bargaining agreement between this new entity, the world with some kind of players, you know, representation,
whether it's the union, whatever it is, have some kind of CBA and agree on NIL, transfer portal,
dates, times, whatever it is, then I think you can make some sense and kind of get your arms
around it and then make consequences have to be severe when guys break the rules. And it's hard
to do that right now because there's different rules
from one state to the other, from one conference to the other.
So it's hard to be consistent for the NCAA right now.
And it's really hard to govern these states
because everybody has their own rules when it comes to NIL.
Going to need a commissioner to do that.
You doing it? Is that you?
No, I think Nicky Saban would be fantastic,
but we don't want to lose him on game day.
He would be, and if it can't be him,
I think Greg Sankey would be fantastic.
He could be good.
Yeah, I think Greg Sankey, though, loves that SEC, doesn't he?
He does.
He said all these other conferences are making these stupid ass decisions.
I know, but in our head, it's better if he does.
You know what I mean?
For those that don't know, and there's probably aass. I know, but in our head, it's better if he does. You know what I mean? For those that don't know,
and there's probably a lot of these people,
Greg Sankey, friend of the program.
Very good friend of the program.
And we are immensely impressed by everything he has done.
If Greg were in charge of, instead of the SEC,
all of college football,
like if they went to a commissioner one day,
then he would set his sights much broader.
But right now, he's set his sights much broader.
But right now he's, you know, he's, he's an SEC.
He's the head of the SEC.
We're the best conference owner.
Every sport.
We're talking football right now, obviously.
And obviously we're every day.
And congrats.
They had a good run in the Olympics too.
Olympics.
They talk every sport.
Baseball.
And he starts rattling it off. He's just like, yeah,
people don't even really talk about our gymnastics teams
or our volleyball or our golf team.
It's like he does love the SEC.
If he was able to do that for the entirety of the college football world.
You know where they suck?
Hockey, because they don't play it.
They don't have teams.
Hockey's a good sport to have.
And Greg Sankey said, but if we were able to create ice at all these schools,
we would beat the Michigan Eagles.
They would be great.
Let's talk about college football as opposed to just all the business
happening around it, although it is a very important conversation
with college football.
Give me your 12 teams, dude.
Nope.
You'll find out on game day.
I sent mine in.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I sent mine in.
How many you got out of the Big Ten?
Three.
I got three.
Three.
How many you got out of the Big 12?
Two.
Can't believe it.
How many you got out of the ACC?
Two.
You got Notre Dame in there?
Wait till Saturday. Don't worry about it.
Don't worry about anything.
And then how many you got out of the SEC?
Don't you worry about it. Just do the math. So let's move along.
Why don't you wait until Saturday, pal?
Okay?
Need this in yesterday.
This was supposed to be sent in yesterday.
You know that for game day.
They need it yesterday.
Of course.
Oh, of course.
E-O-D-W-E-D.
End of day, Wednesday.
Can we have these in, please?
Herbstreet gets Thursday.
Hey, that's what happens.
I'm mixed up on Dublin time.
Oh, yeah, of course.
I'm excited to see yours.
I'm excited to see yours.
Wait till you – my presentation.
I know you're going to have some crazy ones in there.
Besides WVU, you're going to have some curveballs in there.
What are we even –
Smart.
We'll get into it on Saturday.
Okay, we'll get into it on Saturday.
Speaking of Saturday, Tony has a question for you.
Yeah, Kirk, with all due respect to last year's
game, Notre Dame-Navy was a blowout.
Well, before that, Northwestern and Nebraska,
neither of those teams were supposed to be good. This game feels
like a legit game for Week Zero.
Georgia Tech and Florida State, even though
the spread is 10, Georgia Tech scored
30 points per game last year, and they bring back basically
everyone on offense, and then Florida State
had 10 guys drafted. They lost a lot, bringing
in DJU. I think it's going to be a a really really good game um because I think the Georgia Tech can
score and I'm interested to see if Florida State can with DJU what are your thoughts early thoughts
heading into this game Saturday first of all dude again I just appreciate your college football
knowledge hell yeah thank you I just I just really appreciate you roll up your sleeves on this sport, and you love it.
I know you're a Steelers guy, Pittsburgh guy, but, man, you're all over it.
I think Haynes King is, to me, the wild card in this game.
With DJU, of course, we're excited to see what he can do coming into this offense.
I talked with Mike Norvell just a day or two ago about the matchup and about his team and and with the portal and
with all those losses I think he's incredibly fired up not just about what DJ can do within
this offense but I think the skill that they have around him they lost great players a receiver
Benson in the backfield but the way he recruits you go back to his days at memphis the way he's able to put
skill in he knows how to coach offense as well as anybody so the mystery as we look at this video
dj young last year when oregon state's offense he did a really good job of running an offense
that was really more about 12 and 13 personnel very it wasn't like caleb williams at usc like this was an offense that
was based on physicality and then they complemented that physicality with him throwing the football
now i feel like he's going back into kind of like what he did at clemson where they're going to have
to be able to be a team that relies on him to to spread people out and make plays with all the
skill that they have and i just can't wait to see how he plays.
I think the Clemson experience really humbled him.
I think he went out to Corvallis, put in that work,
and everything that happened with the Pac-12,
now it's go time with Florida State.
But I think your intuition about Georgia Tech,
I think I'm feeling that.
I think Haynesnes king his ability
to run and throw memory left a and m went to georgia tech we saw what he could do last year
when this kid is healthy he is fantastic i i think that they've they got a good running game around
him i think it's just going to come down to overall speed oh you know special teams field
position who handles all the travel well uh i think it's a hell of a matchup to start the season to overall speed, you know, special teams, field position,
who handles all the travel well.
I think it's a hell of a matchup to start the season and have to travel all the way over there and play a conference game.
It's going to be a lot of fun, but do not just assume
you look at the two brands, oh, it's Georgia Tech.
Brent Key's doing a good job of getting these guys to buy in to his system,
and I think it's a competitive game.
I think Georgia Tech can hang around.
Speaking of the two teams that are playing,
not Georgia tech.
Let's talk about the other one.
They're big fans.
AJ has a question for you,
Kirk.
What are you expecting?
Like game day atmosphere there,
like for Florida state,
what are you,
are they going to travel?
Well,
like Georgia tech,
who,
who brings more fans?
Do you think also like,
are you hearing what this,
what the game day atmosphere may be like?
So you can still get,
you're just going to go there even though you're there?
You're still going to just act naive today?
What do you mean?
What are you talking about?
What are you talking about?
That's weird.
I don't know.
I think it'll be very festive.
Why were you talking about it?
I'd like to be part of an inside joke.
What's happening?
Oh.
I don't know.
Tell me what's going on.
That would be fun, wouldn't it?
Yeah. Yeah, what are you talking about? I's going on. That would be fun, wouldn't it? Yeah.
Yeah, what are you talking about?
I'd love to be a part of one someday.
Well, it'll be – all I'm saying is it'll be a festive atmosphere.
I think Florida State's bringing – I talked to their athletic director
for about 45 minutes.
Oh, he talked to you?
I think he's expecting 25,000 to 30,000 Florida State fans.
They're fired up, excited to get over there.
Hopefully they all make it over to the game day set.
That would be a great setting around the show.
Throw tomatoes at you.
No, yeah.
We worried about that.
Have you thought about that at all?
Because their lunatic fringe, obviously, is a real thing.
And the Florida State people were very loud at the end of the year.
And then now we're in a different
country. You've obviously
thought about it numerous times, the irony of this entire
thing and how this whole thing could go.
I'm excited. I'm excited to see how it will go.
What do you mean how it could go? What do you mean?
Well, you know, because you
are super babyface all the time.
You're a super babyface all the time because good guy.
Ohio guy, love college ball. But you
certainly took a lot of shrapnel. So know if there's a lot of you know there's a lot of people microphones you know
that you know have their own thoughts you know in this entire thing so like i am pumped about it
because if i'm from florida state and i think you've said this on the record before they're
not gonna let's do it i can understand why they were pissed like yeah so if i was on the team if my kid was on the team if i was an alumni student anything
like that i would be pissed i understand that completely but the way it was it's like this is
what happened and like i think that it was right you know in the end well you say pissed pissed at
who just pissed at the situation or no because you made the decision remember you were the one
that actually kept florida state out that's how it was viewed at the time has it changed
like legit question here you're talking to the ad that's kept Florida State out. That's how it was viewed at the time. Has it changed? Like, legit question here.
You're talking to the AD.
That's awesome to hear.
You're talking to Norvell.
I think your relationship with them has always remained great.
Fantastic.
My relationship with the coaches and the universities, outstanding.
But, you know, the fans, to me, it's going to be a great way to jump back in.
You know, it's going to be a great way to get a reminder of why college football
has the passion
that it has. I didn't realize 25,000
Florida State fans are going to be
heading over there.
I think
you understand this. You watch a lot
of college football. I probably
watch more than anybody in the United
States. And so when it gets
done, I just like to have a place to have an opinion on who I think the better the teams are who and
doesn't mean you agree with me but it's never a conspiracy theory it's never an agenda it's
nothing like that it's just what I happen to think so this if I would have liked Florida State and
said that they were one of the top four teams
then whoever got left out then they would have been upset and georgia probably had as much right
as anybody to be upset you know what i mean yes so reigning champions yeah and they were they were
the number one team all year by far and then they lose a close game in alabama it's like now they're
they go from one to six, whatever it was.
So, you know, everybody, it's an inexact system.
It creates passion.
But I've never, this is my 29th year on the show,
I've been sideways with fan bases every year, including my own, my own school.
I don't think I've ever received the consistency of the vial
that Florida State provided for me for about eight months so with that in mind I'm assuming it's going to be pretty aggressive and
pretty passionate no no no we got a chance to start anew let's do that let's look at this as
a positive not as a negative you know let's let's well that's how we're Let's look at this as a positive, not as a negative.
That's how we're going to look at it.
We get to address it.
It's week one, different country.
Here we go.
Let's go ahead.
It's a new year.
Kirk, and I think you'll hear this from the college football playoff committee,
Kirk actually does not have a vote. And the people that are in there, if you think of the humans that are in there,
I don't want to say that they're a lot of pride or ego but like the people that are in there are very excited that they have say in who
gets the experience it's all them it's up to them legitimately so like whatever you're like kirk
herb street's making the decision there is some suit that's actually in there that is so big that
you kirk i'm making it you know so it's like there's just so many levels of it now that i've
learned about it.
But once again, we can't reiterate enough.
If we were Florida State people, we would understand why you would be pissed.
That is a very legitimate argument.
But 12-team playoff, the sport's bigger, better than ever.
Ratings are going to be higher than ever because sports are the greatest thing on earth,
and everybody is starting to re-realize that, I think.
It's a
beautiful thing, Kirk, and I heard everything,
not everything, but some of the things that you said about
me on Jimmy Trena's podcast,
you are far too kind, you need to never do that again,
but I appreciate the hell out of you, you hear me?
I really do, I genuinely do, and I can't
wait for this year with you.
You don't like when I give you compliments, so I go
to other places and give you compliments,
and I won't repeat it to make you compliments. So I go to other places and give you compliments. Yeah. You know, I won't repeat it to make you uncomfortable.
Thank you.
Okay.
I appreciate you.
I appreciate Du Bois.
Have a great flight over there.
It's going to be a lot of fun.
And then you're going to stop for a little dinner, you think, post-show?
I think so.
We're going to try to find a spot in Dublin, you know,
kind of have a little steak before we fly back to Indiana
because we're going to get back at a terrible time and feel terrible anyway. So should we have a dinner? We probably should. You know, like there's a – we'll do Dublin a little steak before we fly back to Indiana because we're going to get back at a terrible time and feel terrible anyway. So should we have
a dinner? We probably should.
We'll do Dublin a little bit and a game.
We're going to do it. Let's do it.
I'll let Kinley know
that that's a play.
I'll tell you.
Yeah, Kinley.
Kinley has let me
out there a little bit.
Yeah, we'll let D know that.
But I do love Andy, please.
Andy, please.
All right, all right.
We'll see you in Ireland.
We appreciate you.
We're coming back on in about 30 seconds or so.
You're the best.
See you, boys.
So is Kinley.
See you.
Kirk Herbstreit.
Yeah, Kirk.
Kinley is Kirk's security guy.
Dog.
Dog.
He is a dog.
The man.
Absolutely.
But he works for Kirk.
Yeah.
And that is certainly something.
You know, because I've been, uh-huh.
And it's like, yep, we are.
This is on you. It's not on me.
It's happening all around the
globe this weekend and
this evening. We can't thank you enough for allowing
us to do this for a living.
We are so incredibly pumped about our trip taking place immediately after the show ends.
Over to Ireland to enjoy the hell out of the kickoff of the college football season as Florida State takes on Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland.
We're going to be there tomorrow live from a pub called J.R. Mahan's.
It's Mahan's, guys. You know what I mean? You're not saying it right. Mahan. Mahans. It's Mahans, guys.
You know what I mean?
You're not saying it right.
That's Dianne Sheamus,
former world champion,
WWE Hall of Famer,
celebrity guest picker
from Dublin, Ireland.
It's J.R.
Mahans.
J.R. Mahans.
You know, like,
Mahans sounds like
Pogue Mahone.
I was like,
kiss my arse,
which is a kind of
very famous Irish thing. Pogue Mahone? Patrick Mahomes? You're making it sound like arse. You know what I mean? Pog Mahone. I was like, kiss my arse, which is a kind of very famous Irish thing.
Pog Mahone?
Patrick Mahone?
You're making it sound like arse.
You know what I mean?
It's Mahans.
They are Mahans.
Okay, so Pog Mahone is kiss my arse in Irish.
Kiss my arse, yeah.
That's awesome.
What?
Pog Mahone.
Let me teach you a few on the plane ride over tonight.
Yes, I can't wait for that.
And we did hear that you're only drinking water now, which is good news, right?
We've agreed.
Talks on the table.
At Boston Corner, at Ty Schmidt.
We've talked about how it's great news that Seamus,
this Irish lad who has been in the WWE for 15 years,
physically fighting people.
If you watch any of his matches,
just beating people up and getting beat up at the same time,
night after night after night for 15 years.
Afterwards, drinks waters now.
That's not true.
I told you I'm not getting on that plane unless there's Guinness on it.
Yeah, you did.
That was the agreement, right? Corona premiere.
He did say that.
My lawyer threw it over to you.
There was a contract signed.
There has to be Guinness on that plane or Seamus is not getting on it.
Okay, I respect that.
I like the third person there.
AJ, this guy is an absolute beauty.
An absolute beauty.
What's going on?
I know you're dealing with something right now.
Just angry Englishman just kicked the crap out of it on Monday night, you know?
That happened?
Yeah, because you had the shillelagh to the hand last week.
And then he went to town on it.
And then, of course, he came out for the high five or the mid five or whatever it was on Monday night.
Distracted me.
And then, of course, you know, he saw the video.
Did you see it?
Yeah, I did.
Oh, yeah.
It was on WWE's Instagram.
There was a moment
where I was
jacked up. He just announced Sheamus is going to be
the first guest picker of the year
for College Game Day in his hometown of
Dublin. That's awesome. That is a very
cool thing. I can't wait for it.
And in the middle of the match, he's right near me.
I just fucking give him one of
my hands.
We're living good life right now. I just fucking give him one of those. You have to.
Tap it up.
Hey, hell yeah, Seamus.
We're living good life right now.
I turned around and got his ass beat.
Yeah.
Yeah, immediately.
So I was distracted. A drop kicked in the face.
That was the reason.
Right in the face.
That's on me, but this trip won't be like that.
It's going to be a great time.
Obviously, the flight over there is like forever
and you've done it the entirety,
but you're from Ireland and you requested Guinness.
That's not how it went with Australia, right? What was that?
Foster's? Foster's, yeah. Foster's is Australian for
beer. I used to drink Foster's. It actually was
pretty good. Bigger pounder.
Yeah, big can. Bigger pounder. It had
a good taste to it, too. There was a good flavor
to it. I'm not drinking it every day.
And then Australian people are like,
never. That would never happen. You Irish
lad. Bingo.
That one person actually told us in Memphis about the Foster's Australian for beer and also the city of Memphis.
What did he say?
Yeah, basically, you know, if you go down the road down there, you're going to get your throat slit.
And, you know, maybe you drizzle that piss all over your slashed neck and it'll, you know, I don't know, heal it.
Because we don't drink that shit over here.
The most pessimistic Australian human on earth sat right next to the boys in Memphis
and basically told them they should go to their hotel with security right now.
Yes.
With how drunk you guys are and how you guys look, you are prime targets.
Isn't that what that guy said?
Yeah, absolutely.
But before you go, make sure you try the piping hot garlic knots here.
They're unbelievable.
Good man. Hated fosters. Australian man.
I was told that was Australian for man. Hated Fosters. Australian man.
I was told that was Australian for beer, actually.
Fosters.
Guinness.
Castlemaine Forex was the one when I was growing up.
They were the commercials.
Castlemaine Forex was supposed to be the tough Australian beer.
But the Irish beer is Guinness, and you guys like it?
You enjoy Guinness? That was great, man.
Low calorie, full of iron.
You know what I mean?
It's like a meal and a milkshake just in a glass.
It's amazing.
You've had it before.
You're telling me you've never had Guinness before.
I've had
10,000 Irish car bombs
probably in my existence. That's not the same.
It's right there. That's literally the base
of the entire thing.
You're mixing it up, man.
You're tampering with the chemistry of
the pint that is
pure Guinness, you know what I mean?
Okay, so we really hold this thing in high regard over there.
Absolutely, yeah, of course.
It's a great creation.
It's the Lord's nectar.
It's great, dude, I'm telling you.
Okay, so splitting the G.
We just heard from Pete Thamel that it's three gulps and a sip.
That's right.
Is what he was told for the thing.
Splitting the G is one pull off of the pint,
and then you've got to get the Guinness right in the G.
Yeah, you've got to get the line right across the G, yeah.
So this is like when you drunks just were like trying to get,
we drink so many of these things,
we gotta create something here?
How long has this been around that you know of?
It's actually new, to be honest, for me,
but I think it's more like, you know,
because it's so easy to knock a pint back in one go.
I think it's just kind of like,
it's just a trick to try and make people enjoy the pint more
and not like, you know, knock it back.
Oh, so you guys are just making them disappear too quick.
Making rules to stop us knocking the pint back as quickly as possible.
Okay, so this is what streaming TV did whenever they started just releasing one show at a time instead of the entirety.
Yeah.
Because these doofuses are just watching it all straight through.
We need to at least have this be a couple weeks.
So now they release two shows at a time for a 10-10.
Bad monkey. Bad monkey ep-10. Bad Monkey.
Bad Monkey Ep 3 delivered.
Keep going.
Have you watched it yet?
Oh, yeah.
I watched all three episodes so far.
It is a fantastic show.
All right.
I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I saw it advertised last night.
You'll enjoy it.
It's great.
Good show.
He's bought on his best, yeah?
Yeah, I'd say.
He's throwing heat still.
Good man.
He is a good man.
By the way, he's about seven foot tall.
They did a wrestling with my family movie a good man. By the way, he's about seven foot tall.
They did a wrestling with my family movie a couple of years back with WWE,
and I just couldn't believe how tall he was.
He's literally like 6'6". Fifteen years in WWE, who's the most ridiculous person that you've met?
Because I've only been there a few times throughout the last five, six years,
a few different rounds.
And the humans that just come through the WWE that you get to meet and see,
15 years there through the er WWE that you get to meet and see,
15 years there through the eras that you've lived,
I assume there's been some pretty insane happenings backstage?
I think the biggest lunatic I met was a nice fella, a lot of personality. But when I first started, his name was Ricky Ortiz.
He was just kind of out there, man.
He didn't know what he was going to do, you know.
But it was about 2009, 2010, yes.
Like, really nice fella, you know?
Riddle is another one.
Matt Riddle was another man who just kept you on your toes,
you know what I mean?
So in your matches, you guys beat the shit out of it, right?
Oh, yeah.
I mean, this is, as a person that has been a fan of the product
while watching it, then getting in there,
you know, there's different terms for different things,
you know, the way things work. And we we know these matches are not predetermined and it is best
man or women in there will win and do that type of thing we know that okay and that's how we speak
of it and always will so in your answer know that that is who you're talking yeah please but your
matches they are like like it is a violent altercation that is happening in front smack in
the mouth and in a punch in the face
happening back-to-back moments on this past Monday.
And it made me realize you've been doing this for 15 years.
15 years you've been doing this.
So, like, your style different than most people?
And how many people wrestle your style of wrestling?
Well, I mean, when they step in there with me,
they have to wrestle my style.
I have no choice.
I just love the physicality of it, man. I've always had
like, I play Gaelic football, which is
something like... What is that? It's basically, it's
kind of, it's one of the, it's Ireland's
sport, right? National sport. That and hurling. You know
about hurling. Hurling's awesome.
Is that the ball? It's the wooden
stick in the slitter.
Oh, I'm thinking the big long
telephone pole. We just saw the guy.
So we just saw a buddy. He caught one, like a snag.
The ball, right?
It's like a small text bar.
Yeah, then he ran, and then he hit it off his stick,
and then he put that thing top, Chad.
You remember that one?
Oh, yeah.
And the net.
That's like your sport?
No, so there's two of them, right?
The same sort of rules, the same goal with the post on top.
It's a soccer goal, a post on top, right?
So you put the ball in the back of the net.
It's three points.
You put the ball or the slitter, whatever it is, over the bar.
It's one point.
So the score will be like 311 or 211 to whatever, 110.
What shape's the ball?
So the football, it's a football for Gaelic football, right?
So you're allowed to use your hands, but you can't run with it.
Like if you take a couple steps, you have to bounce the ball
and you have to use it. You have to drop it onto your foot. You have to solo it back into your hands. Is it can't run with it. If you take a couple steps, you have to bounce the ball, and you have to drop it onto your foot.
You have to solo it back into your hands.
Is it a round ball or oblong?
It's a soccer ball.
Oh, it's a soccer ball.
It's like a soccer ball, yeah.
Like speedball?
Have you ever played speedball where you can take three steps,
and then you've got to stop before you throw it?
Or you've got to bounce it.
You've got to bounce off your foot or the ground?
You've got to bounce off the ground and on your foot.
You can basically only bounce on the ground one time,
and then you have to drop it onto your foot, right?
Or you can just use your foot
the whole time,
solo it back into your foot.
So you can juggle it
all the way down the field?
With your foot, yeah.
Just drop it onto your foot,
back into your hands,
back into your hands,
and then you can score a goal.
But then can't you come
take my head off
if I'm trying to juggle it
onto my foot?
Shoulder stuff.
Shoulder stuff.
Not like in football or soccer,
like where just everyone goes down.
We got a video here.
Oh, we have, yeah.
We just pulled up a video here.
Holy shit. Only in Ireland? it's played in america too like some of the cities
like new york and boston and uh philly and even tennessee they'll have like local gaelic football
teams that compete around the country that'd be three points right you have to use your foot to
kick it in if you have it in your hands or if the ball is coming in high you can punch it into the
goal man so some some Irish person watched soccer
and said, this could be so much fucking business.
Watch this.
That's what happened there?
This is better than soccer, mate.
Look at all the guys in the net.
A freak hit.
Oh my God, Borda!
So these are all like soccer players
that were probably too big.
No, no.
They probably never played soccer.
They always probably grew up playing.
You grow up either with a football in your hand
or you grew up with a,
actually,
a hurling stick in your hand.
And the thing about it is as well,
you know,
some counties in Ireland,
you call them states here,
but counties in Ireland,
some of them are like better at the hurling,
like Kilkenny,
Cork,
Tipperary,
they'd be hurling states,
you know, or counties. Hurling states or counties,
whereas Dublin and Kerry, they'd be more like football.
You know what I mean?
They'd be more football states.
Just real quick.
Look how fast it is.
Look how fast that is.
This is a sport you played?
I played this growing up.
I played for Aaron's Oil for years, yeah.
And we're seeing all goals right now.
What is the defense like?
We're bodying people?
So there's a player on each team that's one-on-one.
So you've got a defensive player marking a forward player.
So it's 15 players on each side.
So one goalkeeper and 14 outfield players.
Do you tackle them or no?
Yeah.
You can punch the ball out of their hands as they're dropping.
See why he's bouncing it there and then kicking it?
You can knock the ball out of his hand and full shoulder stuff and all.
It's crazy.
Some great videos, man, of fights going on.
Do you have to shuffle it like it's rugby?
No, watch him, watch him.
So, look, pass the ball out of your hand with a fist.
Punch, like Aussie rules football.
Yeah, basically.
We actually play the Aussies.
We did, anyway, as far as I know, every year,
an Aussie rules, like an Ireland versus Australia match.
The Aussie rules football we learned about during COVID.
It was fucking awesome.
Impossible to watch.
Look at the skill.
So that's one point?
That's one point once it goes over the bar.
The skill involved is insane.
Is this happening right now, this season?
So they just had the season's over.
The All-Ireland's over.
They have the All-Ireland.
So all the counties play each other.
And Claire won the Hurling, which is where my mom's from
middletown malibu on the west coast man what a sport how about all this shit think about
because ireland's so old right like i'm obviously my dad like we're learning about i think i'm
gonna learn about my genealogy or whatever whenever i go over there i think somebody's
looking it all up on you find the town you're from? Yeah, County Cork,
I guess. Oh, you're a Cork man, are you?
Yeah, I think. From what I've been told,
I don't know. I can learn. Hold on, hold on.
I wouldn't go around telling people that, you know what I mean?
Oh, no!
No, I, like, so
somebody wanted to do,
it was presented via the College Game Day
folks were like, hey, this person asked
if you would want to know your family's, like, history over here or whatever.
Yeah.
And, like, the person that presented it to me, as soon as they said it, I was like, yeah, I want to know that.
And then I was like, why do you even, like, we want to know that, right?
And then he was like, maybe not.
Like, I don't know.
He gave, like, a second guess.
And I'm like, that is fascinating.
I do.
So now I'm, like, kind of intrigued by it all.
But, like, Ireland is such a, it feels like all those places over there are so old.
Everything's so old because of the amount of history it has.
Like, over here, everything's relatively brand new.
Like, that sport right there, I assume that – I don't even know how old that sport is.
It's ancient, man.
There's, like, stories of Cullum as well playing, like, mythology stories of Cullum playing call him playing Hurling, you know what I mean?
The Coup and all.
Just like ancient, ancient sports.
And when did you come to America?
I came here in 07 when I got signed by WWE.
I went to Tampa, Florida to go to FCW, which is now called NXT.
One of the founding fathers.
I, too, NXT legend.
People forget. I've seen some footage already, yeah. Come on. I too, NXT legend.
People forget.
I've seen some footage all right, yeah.
Come on.
Huh? You're a good man.
Thank you, I would never, just by the way.
Whenever you wanna step in with me, Paddy, you know what I mean?
I told you that the other day.
I'm a big fan, I'm never.
Just wanna let you know that's never gonna be.
But you don't think the physicality is great?
That's what I love about it.
Yes, I love it.
I love when someone steps up to me, you know?
And, like, they bring it,
and it's something they haven't seen before,
and I'm just smacking them,
and then they're smacking me back.
Like, there's all these rules before of, you know, wrestling,
like, taking liberties.
People just say, oh, you're taking liberties,
where you just try and beat up their opponent.
But for me, it's not that.
I want to fire them up, you know what I mean?
I want to bring out something
that hasn't been seen yet in their career.
And afterwards, like, you know, it's awesome because, like,
we share that kind of, like, you know, we've been through a war.
The fans on the outside love it.
You know what I mean?
They've seen something physical they don't really see.
Every arena loves it.
This is awesome chance every single –
Yeah.
Every single – because you're, like, you feel it.
When I'm sitting at the ringside, you, like, actually feel it.
You're, like, damn.
And the whole night you're seeing it is a vastly different style than everything.
I've had the opportunity
now, because of the
WWE, to talk to a lot of OG
professional wrestlers. And the way
they book shows.
Everybody has an idea of how the show should be booked.
And obviously, they have questions about everything
that's taking place. They're like, it should feel like
it's a buffet. There should be a little of
this, a little bit of this, a little bit of that.
We can't jeopardize anything.
Basically, every person that's been through wrestling
kind of has the same mindset whenever it comes to that.
There's only one little bucket at the buffet
that is what you do.
And it is like everywhere it hits, literally.
And it's because you, 15 years you're standing there.
Watching a fight.
Yeah, punch me in the face. Yeah, I'm going to punch you in the face. That's the toughest. And it's because you, 15 years you're standing around. Watching a fight. Yeah, punch me in the face.
Yeah, I'm going to punch you in the face.
That's the toughest steak you can eat.
Go ahead, Conor.
So do you like going up against guys similar to you then?
Like when you go up against like Gunther.
That match was absurd.
So is that something you'd rather do?
Or like when you're doing Pete, Butch, Dunn,
where he's kind of a different style,
you're kind of introducing your own style versus his. look that the Gunther matches to me were very were
special you know what I mean and uh that match wasn't even supposed to happen it was it was going
to Wales and at the time I don't think I was doing anything so you know I talked to talk to Hunter
about it and spitball back and forth and then you know then he went and made the match I pitched
that match in Wales and he's like, you know what I mean
and fair play to him, he went behind it
and made it happen and to me
the physical, the matches I had with Drew
him, you know
Daniel Bryan back in the
day
Mr. Danielson
Mr. Danielson
and then obviously Cesaro
and all, I just love that aspect
and you know
Pete the other night too
he's got an opportunity
I think when
other talent get in with me
I think they realise
they don't have to worry about
you know
the other guy complaining
or moaning about it
they just know
they can go full tilt
because that's what it's like
for example
Pete Dunne the other night
he went in there and got stuck in you know what's that mean? he got stuck in? and are moaning about it. They just know they can go full tilt because that's what it is. Like, for example, Pete Dunne the other night,
he went in there and got stuck in,
you know?
What's that mean?
What's that?
He got stuck in?
He got stuck in,
you know what I mean?
He brought it,
like he brought an intensity he hasn't been able to,
or we haven't seen from him before.
And it was, you know,
and that's what made the match,
you know?
And I honestly think,
I told Regal this the other day,
I think when I look at Pete Dunne as well,
it kind of reminds me of,
as you said, 15 years, it's mad, right?
It's like, it's gone so, sometimes I feel
it's gone quick, sometimes I feel it hasn't
but one of the things that
really set me off in my
career, you know, after I'd gone through John Cena
and Randy and
Hunter and all them, I went in with
Daniel Bryan, you know?
Daniel Bryan, Daniel
was great and I see the same traits in Pete Doan
because he's got a very creative mind,
but he's also aggressive.
He just needs to let go.
And he let go on Monday night, and it was awesome.
Ludwig too, man.
Ludwig's awesome.
I was talking about Ludwig like,
oh, he's just a ring announcer for Walter.
I was like, yeah, let's show them.
Let's show everybody what we can do.
Gunther.
The artist formerly known. Yeah, it's Walter. It's Gunther. Oh, let's show them. Let's show everybody what we can do. Gunther. The artist formerly known.
Yeah, it's Walter.
It's Gunther.
The real Gunther.
Jeez.
Jeez.
That shows the respect of the heavyweight champion.
That's all right.
Gunther, sorry.
I have a brain fart there, you know.
I'm already thinking tomorrow it's going back home.
Hey, listen, everybody does.
Questions from the back.
Nick Moraldo, lifelong wrestling fan as well.
The fact that you called Pete Dunn butch is, I mean,
there is a reason Pete Dunn's been pissed off.
Why did you name him that?
That wasn't even me.
Hey, hold on.
I mean, you're keeping him alive.
Pete Dunn said it was you, pal.
That's what he said.
AJ has a question for you, Shane.
How do you, like, not cross the line and become reckless?
I'm sure there's wrestlers that some people don't want to get in there with because they could be reckless and get you hurt or whatever.
You want to be physical, you want to put on a great
show. Do you ever cross the line and just get
reckless or feel like you see
red and you go crazy?
Biggest thing is safety, obviously, right? Because we're on
the road every week.
Sometimes five days a week, including live events.
You have to, you know, safety
is very important.
I was out there last year with a neck thing that didn't think I'd even get back,
you know what I mean? So everything going forward now for me is a blessing, but always
safety. But, you know, like get them, you know, shots. I've had my nose broken a couple
of times, probably asked for it. But, you know, as long as you're not like doing stuff
that's going to, you know, injure people, obviously, you know, badly.
What do you mean you probably asked for it?
Like, you were too physical?
I think I was.
I think I fired a guy up too much.
It was Humberto.
Were you there for that?
You weren't there for that, right?
What, at SmackDown?
I think it was a Raw.
It was Raw.
It was actually in the Thunderdome when we were in the Thunderdome.
And I was kind of egging this guy.
I wanted to get something out of him.
I turned around.
Before I could even block a shot, he came in with a full elbow.
And my nose just went like that, right across my face.
But, like, I wasn't mad at him because I kind of got it out of him, you know?
But safety is very important, man.
You know what I mean?
You don't want to put anyone out of action.
But body shots and hard hits, you know what I mean?
That's Dublin, babe.
That's Dublin, babe.
Breakthrough Superstar Raw, November 23rd, 2009.
We just Googled Sheamus' greatest moments.
Kofi Kingston in the middle of a Royal Rumble doing something awesome.
That was like a 15-year run.
He eliminates Randy Orton.
Oh, my God.
RKO.
He's got a big match in Berlin against Gunther.
Against Gunther.
Against who?
Gunther.
Gunther, yeah.
I didn't know.
Do you?
Follow the product. Sheamus eliminates Kofi. Royalter, yeah. I didn't know. Do you? Follow the product.
Yeah.
And Seamus eliminates Kofi, Royal Rumble champion.
Your skin.
You used to paint it?
You still paint it?
No, no, no, not really, no.
I just didn't go in the sun at all.
I was living in Florida at the time wearing hoodies and just, I live in like a vampire,
basically.
I wouldn't go out during the day.
Okay, so that, you have never altered your skin color to be whiter?
No, never.
Ever?
No. That is your actual, you are? That right skin color to be whiter? No, never. Ever? No.
That is your actual,
you are?
That right there
is my actual skin color, yeah.
Highlighter?
It's not, yeah.
Whiteboards,
you know what I mean?
Mark's pretty good.
You were always
going to be a wrestler, yeah?
I loved it, man.
I, uh,
so,
talking about being old, right?
It's like Ireland being old, right?
I grew up in a Georgian house
in North Great Georgia Street. It was a tenement house basically when all the english left uh
ireland they had all these great georgian houses you'll see them i'll bring you around and show you
or if you have time and uh my family grew up on the bottom floor like there was two communal
toilets outside it was like an old house but like basically families were living them sometimes with
seven kids you know what i mean in one room and uh the house is like the house is probably over older than this country the house is like was like
built in like maybe late 16 early 1700s like late 1600s you know what i mean so but there was there
was a lady upstairs um and she had like she had all six channels that we had at the time and i
used to watch world of sport which is in england And then Sky came in and they brought in WWF at the time, now WWE.
And I remember watching Macho Man Randy Savage walk out and
doing the thing with Georgie Animal, Steele and Elizabeth.
And right there, man, I was hooked.
I was like, what is this?
And the same thing, it just overnight, I think it hit every kid in Ireland,
which just like was glued, was talking about the next day in school.
It was just, it was a phenomenon.
And ever since then, it's what I wanted to do, and here I am, you know?
How old are you?
46.
46 years old, so you're a little bit older than I am.
But like, that attitude, Eric, caught all of America.
Oh, yeah.
Like, it was the time.
But now, every building's sold out.
Every single building is sold out everywhere that the WWE goes.
And the crowd in Florida the other night was phenomenal.
I did not expect that.
I did not expect that out of Sunrise, Florida.
Even though it's called Fort Lauderdale, they still got behind me and
I was like, yeah.
Everybody was out there saying it.
They're like ten people were like, here in Fort Lauderdale, Fort Lauderdale.
I'm like, I think they call it Sunrise.
I think the area is Sunrise, but I understand it is part of Fort Lauderdale.
But, yeah, they got behind you because of what you do, man,
and how long you've been doing it.
A lot of respect, obviously, for the old Seamus.
And we can't wait to see this water-drinking animal that we've been doing.
No water drinking.
There's no water going on.
Maybe, yeah.
I said that Guinness house.
Is that Guinness on the way?
Is any sign of that coming?
There it is.
It's not here.
It will be waiting for you, though, in the chariot, you know.
Hell, yeah. Boy, what's though, in the chariot. Hell yeah.
But what's the crack in the royalties here?
You're saying the post-Malone, this banger after banger stuff,
the Malones coming out.
That's royalties coming?
Yeah, but I gave Seamus voice.
Did you see I said Seamus voice?
All right, yeah.
I gave banger after banger after banger, which is what his matches are.
We just talked about them.
And it is banger after banger after banger, 15 years of it.
I don't know how your body
has held up. That's that Irish toughness.
Grew up in a house from the 1600s.
That's no big deal.
We got some real toughness here.
College game day going over there.
American football going into Europe
as a whole. I know that you
haven't lived there while this has all
taken place seemingly over the last 10 years
you've been on the road and working here.
But American football getting into Europe,
feels like it's a great sport for Irish people to love.
And has the NFL and football as a whole been something
that Irish people have watched for a long time?
Yeah, so there was a huge phenomenon too when I was about 12, 13,
so probably the early 90s.
Everyone was walking around with Raiders jackets and Bears jackets
and New York Giants. early 90s, like everyone's walking around with Raiders jackets and Bears jackets and
New York Giants.
It was, when I was a kid growing up, it was on TV.
American sports were huge.
Like, obviously the Boston Celtics.
Hell yeah.
Obviously, you know, that Irish connection, huge.
What's the story with Upside Down?
I don't get the Upside Down.
Gummy got it for me.
It's just a cool hat, man.
It's fashion.
It's fashion.
Yeah, it's just what the cool kids are doing
these days it's fashion but uh yeah you know like obviously i think what the whole that the first
real college thing is obviously notre dame obviously the fight in irish is it's it's i
mean last year did you see some of the pictures of like notre dame they changed dame street which
is one of the most popular streets in dublin they changed the notre dame street it was just
the whole the whole city was taken over. Do Irish people
like that or hate that? They love it, yeah. Actual Irish
people, tell me.
Some of them
just like their peace and quiet, you know.
But there was a lot of people there who love it.
They all welcome it in. Listen, the city's buzzing, man.
The crack is 90, you know
what I mean? And people love when
people come to Dublin or Ireland to have a good time.
Crack is 90. Crack is 90, yeah.
Crack turned 90.
The fun, man, the fun.
But when people come to Ireland
to have a good time,
they're embraced, mate.
They're embraced.
They want to bring them in,
have the crack,
enjoy the city,
enjoy the culture, you know?
It's great.
Foxy and I went to Ireland.
Huh?
Separate trips.
Who?
Foxy, the guy in the back there
cutting cables.
Yeah, Seamus.
They were not too kind to my family when he was there. Yeah, he's behind the fern. Yeah, he's behind the fern. Ireland huh separate trips who Foxy the guy in the back there cutting kids yeah Seamus they were
not too kind to my family yeah he was behind the face behind the Fern yeah it's real you water that
thing every day the grass is greener where you water it that fern grown strong you know
what I mean gotta keep you know what I mean you know what I mean how many Irish how many Irish
things will you teach us like teach the man as you want. What was the one? Pokemon?
Pokemon.
Pokemon, bitch.
That's why you're making that virus sound like...
J.R.
Mahans. Mahans, yeah.
Mahans. I mean, look.
You just have to complicate everything. It's easy. Mahans.
It's Mahans. Are there any American
things that you can't really say
the proper way? No, not really. You've been here a long time. It's our problem. Do any American things that you can't really say The proper way No not really
It's our problem
Do you have an American accent
Think
Thought that they
You guys fuck that one up every time
Yeah well you know
When I do go home for a day or two
Even if I'm around my dad
After about two hours my accent comes back fully
Just when I'm over here, for the first
six months of the year,
no one could understand what I was saying.
I was trying to pay bills. I went into those
online bills, you know, trying to get stuff done, your phones,
whatever it is. The automated
system couldn't understand what I'm saying.
My phone still, I say something on my phone
when I'm driving and I press the, you know, the dictaphone
thing. It just doesn't
work. It doesn't work.
You need to buy an iPhone over there in Ireland. You need to buy, I think you need doing, if I'm driving and I press the, you know, the dictaphone thing, it just doesn't... It doesn't restate.
You need to buy an iPhone over there in Ireland.
You need to buy... Buy an Irish iPhone.
But we're going to pick up an accent, too.
I can't wait. I am so excited.
Do you have an American accent?
I don't have an American accent. Can you do, like, a Cole impression?
Michael Cole? Michael Cole.
Oh, God. Why would anyone want to do that?
I agree. Hey, I'm with you, brother.
He's over, brother.
He's going to miss you, man.
And that's what I'm going to miss, too.
I'm going to miss.
To be honest with you, right, I'm not doing a shill thing here,
but one of the best parts of my entrance,
even when we were at the Brawling Brutes and to now,
is his introduction of me of a fight night.
Unbelievable, man.
Thank you.
I hear it on the back.
That gets me pumped.
Okay, I'm happy to hear that, because
sometimes I've lost air completely and I didn't time
it up right. I thought I messed it up,
but like, it is a good, me
and Cole, obviously, I'm a massive fan
of Cole's, have been, and I said
this the other day, like, he's been there
27 years, I'm 37, so like,
how many memories do you have before the age of 10?
I assume a few, I guess.
I don't know what the normal is.
But basically every memory I have of WWF, he has been there or a part of or involved with in some sort.
So to work next to him, it's stupid.
It is absolutely stupid.
His relationship with everybody, too, everybody kind of sees him for what he is.
He's Michael Cole.
He is a special type of asshole, obviously, a hilarious one, but somebody that really loves his job,
really is dedicated to his profession,
and the best of all time, and never misses work.
Ever.
Ever misses work.
It's like, he's a legend.
He's an icon.
But we have a blast down there.
Thank you for interacting with us with your sweaty ass.
Are you the sweatiest guy that ever wrestled?
Probably, yeah. I'm the sweatiest guy, yeah.
My wife gets on to me about that.
It's like, how are you sweating?
Like, we're only in the gym like two minutes or whatever it is. I'm the worst sweater ever. Celtic, warrior. Workouts, which, you know, you. My wife gets on to me about that. It's like, how are you sweating? Like, we're already in the gym, like, two minutes or whatever it is. I'm the
worst sweater ever. Celtic warrior
workouts, which, you know, you're going to be on.
Let's hit the microphone there. But you're going to be on, right?
Yeah, definitely. I've seen
the workouts before. I would love to do that.
We're pretty channel-backed. You're all welcome
to come on, man. I think AJ should be the guy.
AJ should be the first. I don't know. I don't know if my body
can hold up. I mean, you guys are a lot stronger than me.
No, AJ, shut up.
It's not about that.
Celtic Warrior Workout's not about that.
It's about, like, the journey.
Everyone's own individual journey.
And it's unbelievable.
I started with a camcorder and just started doing a couple of workouts.
And I did it on myself without the company.
And it's basically, it's some of the comments from people who have, like,
just changed their lives.
They start working out.
And it's all, like, it's all basically. You feel like an asshole? You like doing that? You like doing that? I love it. That's pretty cool. have like just changed their lives. They start working out and it's, it's all like,
it's all basically,
you feel like you like doing that.
I mean, that's pretty cool.
Changing people's lives.
I mean,
the Bobby Lashley one was nuts.
It's awesome.
And it's not about weight.
It's not about going in there and lifting crazy weights and doing crazy.
It's all about like the different journey.
Everyone has their own type of workout and I end up doing it.
And I'm the one who ends up with egg on my face at the end.
I'm the one who's like sweating,
being like on the ground while the person I'm working with, like they're grand, you know? So I do everyone. I basically do everyone else's end. I'm the one who's sweating, being on the ground while the person I'm working with,
they're grand. I basically
do everyone else's workouts.
That's the whole key to it. It's a great vehicle
to do an interview. Kevin Hart has
cold tubs, and obviously there's this type of
stuff, but then having golf
as one, hot ones as one.
There's always a lot of different avenues
for good conversations,
getting people relaxed.
But doing workouts, you know, you see people strain a little bit.
You see what they go into.
And I think the conversations, and he talked about Bobby Lashley,
the story, the journey is fucking awesome.
It's a great show.
You should be proud of it.
I am.
And AJ will do the workout with you. So you're a bike or you're a Peloton guy?
Yeah.
Nope.
I'm pretty basic, pretty meat and potatoes.
Hey, we're talking chicken and rice. I'm not basic. Pretty meat and potatoes. Hey, we're talking... VersaClimber. We're talking VersaChicken and Rice.
I hate that, man.
35, 40...
I'm not running any distance.
I will not do any distance.
35, 40 minutes VersaClimber.
This guy.
No, no, no.
Like 15 seconds at a time.
You know, it's funny.
I was telling Pat the other day
we were at TV at Raw.
I was like,
every time I watch the show,
you're just there.
I was like,
I just see you as the straight man.
You know what I mean?
The whole time.
You never laugh at anything he says.
I laugh at everything.
And then you never clap. Yeah, you laugh all the time. Well, no what I mean? The whole time. You never laugh at anything he says. I laugh at everything. And then you never clap.
Yeah, you laugh all the time.
Well, no, I'm not their dancing monkey.
Like, they want me to do, like,
they try to goad me into doing stupid things.
No, it's just to participate.
Which I do.
I say football.
I say I.O.
I participate.
Professional asshole.
That's kind of his thing.
That's the thing.
You had it right whenever you were reading.
He's a big prick.
Every show needs a straight man.
You know what I mean?
They need someone there to keep it grounded.
Is that hand going to be okay, Bob?
Because I saw Pete Dunn putting those fingies in his mouth in that match during the commercial break.
I didn't get that.
I didn't understand that part.
You let him loose?
The crowd was like, bleh.
Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the general managers in the NFL,
a man who definitely knows who Sheamus is.
He's probably very pumped that Sheamus is on at the exact same time as him.
The Houston Texans have obviously had a turnaround so quick
that it has befuddled damn near everybody,
especially people that are in the same division
that potentially used to be the kings of the division.
Watching them go from dumpster, not even fire, just dumpster, to talk of the town, them go from dumpster not even fire uh just dumpster to you know talk
of the town super bowl conversation immediately has been through the vision of a man who's a
bison formerly at new england now in houston ladies and gentlemen nick casario fellas no
definitely you guys upgraded from darius if seamamus is in the studio today. Holy cow.
Big day.
A part of bringing D-Butt to the New England Patriots, obviously,
so it has a relationship with him now.
And my fellow golf partner as well, so we can talk about that later.
He is golfing.
He's getting great.
Have you played with him recently or no?
Yeah, we played at the Live event, and the program was myself and Bryson,
and DB can play.
Yes.
Very smooth, very skilled.
We had a blast.
It was he and I, and we played with Bryson for nine,
and then we played with Thomas Peters for another nine.
So it was a great day.
It was an awesome day.
It was great to be around DB,
has embraced golf for somebody that hadn't played it for a long time.
But he's just so talented.
He's such an athlete, and, you know, it's fun to be around him.
So, but, I mean, I'm not – he's – like, it'd be probably a contest.
Who's a better athlete, him or Sheamus?
Yeah, okay, yeah.
He's gotten by a few pounds, but we'll see.
Of course, yeah.
And Sheamus and DB, Darius could be a phenomenal WWE superstar.
Absolutely.
If he – like, just because the way he is, he is built.
He is absolutely stacked.
And you're talking about to the athlete point.
We've been saying about Darius for like the last year or so since he's picked up golf.
It's like, oh, he's going to be a scratch golfer like eight, nine months because of how athletic he is.
And this dude, when he comes up to Indianapolis, his travel schedule is crazy during the football season.
He's here, then he's in New Jersey, then he's back home.
Back home, South Florida.
That's a far flight. A lot of movement. Yeah, in New Jersey, then he's back home. Back home, South Florida. That's a far flight.
A lot of movement. Yeah, and he's committed
and he's kicking ass, and we're very grateful and thankful
for that entire thing. But when he's here, if it's a
nice day at all, show's over,
hang out, let's talk about what's happening tomorrow.
He's golfing like three, four
times a week. Oh, yeah. And he's getting
very good. He's got Phil Mickelson teaching
him shit, too. I mean, like, he is
going to be great, and we all understand that.
Is Phil teaching him how to gamble on the golf course, too?
Oh, geez.
Hopefully.
Geez.
Probably.
I'd assume that DB has pressed a few times in a few different matches.
All right, Coach, let's talk about being great at something.
And I guess the people that knew you before you got the GM job knew that this was going to happen or assume this took place. But for us, and we've told you this story,
and we're very grateful for you still talking to us after it all went down, the Houston Texans
were a dumpster fire. They got no control of what's going on. People want out of there.
The things that are happening, this place, just not good. You get called in. Another coach goes away. GM has headphones on during the game
to the sideline. So like me, Indianapolis coach former watching, it's like Houston, Texas, just
this place is continuing to be the Houston Texans. Then boom, all of a sudden you start making plays.
You find your culture. D'Amico Ryans comes in. CJ Stroud becomes a guy. Now you're pulling the
trigger on Stefan Diggs. You re-sign Dalton.
I mean, it's just like everything starts going in the right direction quickly.
Everybody assumed that was going to be the case.
But now that you sit going into a season where you are Super Bowl contending,
Super Bowl conversation team,
how does that feel as a person that had never been a GM before?
And it's like there's no way you knew this was going to happen this quick?
Or was this the vision all along, which, you know,
would make sense as well for somebody that's had success that you've had?
Yeah, I think anytime you're a part of a team, it's a calm, it's an effort.
You know, a lot of people are involved in the process.
So, you know,
I was fortunate to be put in a position that I was in when I was hired by the
Texans.
And like anything,
it just takes a lot of work and a lot of purposeful effort.
And it's just getting the right people with the right mindset in the building and just getting
them to perform on a day-to-day basis and establish some level of consistency, establishing a standard
of performance and what the expectation is. And it's just, in the end, it takes work. It's not,
I don't want to try to oversimplify it, Pat, but it's about the work that you put in.
And anything over the course of time, it's through consistent habits that you just – and if there's some trial and error, you're going to learn, you're going to figure things out.
And there's never a template for when you show up in a building, here's what's going to happen.
So you try to apply your training, some of the things that you learned wherever you were.
I had a tremendous experience. We've talked about this in New England, learned a lot of the things that you learned wherever you were. I had a tremendous experience.
We've talked about this in New England, learned a lot of great things, was around a lot of
good people, saw what good football looked like.
So when you walk in a building, you just got to assess, kind of figure out, all right,
where do you start?
Get started somewhere and just have repeated actions over the course of time.
And it took work to get to a point.
But, you know, with the support of ownership and you
know multiple people in the building and i'd say the hiring of domico was i mean certainly a big
part of that as well because i think when we've talked about this when you're around him his
mindset his mentality what the expectation is from the players the respect that he garners
as soon as you walk into the room so in the end it's about the players the players win games it's about the players. The players win games.
It's about the coaches putting the players in a position. Quite frankly, my job is to kind of just stay out of the way and just support the head coach
and support the people that are in the building and just try to, you know,
do my part, be a fiduciary and it just be supportive and just be a part of the
team effort.
So I think that's the mindset that we have here and that's what we want our
players to have. And anybody that comes in the building,
that's what we want them to possess.
Massive respect for the, everybody has their role.
They just got to execute mindset,
which I assume you did learn up in new England alongside everybody that you
worked with, but like having everybody buy in,
and then also having the,
your concept and idea of what it should look like and who should be in those
positions is a talent that not everybody possesses because some teams go from
nowhere to somewhere.
And then some people go penthouse to outhouse whenever ideas change and minds change yours has gone up pal
so you should be incredibly proud and you talk about D'Amico Ryans I've never been able to be
around him as a coach I've never been on a field to watch him do his thing former players you know
the question is like are they going to be able to hold players accountable or are they just going to
you know brother-in-law everything with the the players are they going to be able to be able to have a strict regimen that it takes to be
successful in the NFL attention to details D'Amico has that in everything it sounds like and whenever
your roster changes or whenever you get a rookie in there how quickly is the buy-in to D'Amico and
is D'Amico going to be able to be a guy who's going to be able to maintain this for the next 20 years?
And if that's the case, fuck you.
Because, you know, this is supposed to be
Indianapolis. We'll just make you
a Texans fan. I'm hearing
word on the street that you're
slowly but surely converting.
Good idea. I know we have to go
into your old house week one, so
you probably can't pull the ripcord.
Alright, watch it. Watch it, Paisan. Okayord just all right all right watch it watch it paisan okay yeah watch it watch it watch it paisan you guys have been incredibly
good to us but no for real though like piecing those things together D'Amico Rines is the pivotal
hire you think to to really extend the entire operation and how does he operate with players
and when did you notice that he was going to be a great head coach yeah he's outstanding I mean
instant credibility as soon as he walks in the room.
And I would just say this.
Like, players want to be coached.
They want to be held accountable.
They want to be held to a standard.
And I think what they're looking for is consistency on a day-to-day basis.
So coaching is teaching.
So are you providing them the information?
Are you giving them the resources that they need to be successful?
Are you consistent with your words?
Are you consistent with your message? Are you consistent with your message?
Do you fix problems?
Do you find solutions?
And I would just say, like, D'Amico was that way as a player.
There's a reason that he was a captain when he was a player.
And just he's so consistent day to day.
And I would say he has a little bit of that old school mentality where, I mean,
we're not running a soft program here.
So you come here, you work.
We're not for everybody.
Everybody's not for us, and that's okay.
And I'd say part of the team building is you have to have a discipline
with the types of players that you identify.
And if you say you have a standard,
you want to hold yourself to that standard and be consistent,
and hopefully the players that we bring in the building reinforce our messaging.
So it all fits together.
It all ties together.
I can't say enough great things about D'Amico. It's an honor and a joy to work with him on a day-to-day basis.
And he absolutely holds the players accountable because we need their best and he's been in their
shoes and we don't have a lot of rules around here. You know, there's about two or three rules.
It's basically be on time, be a good teammate and protect the team, which means just make smart
decisions. So we're adults. We're
going to be treated like adults. There's a standard of behavior and performance that we expect each
day. And in the end, it's about the players because they're the ones that are going to win
or lose games. And they have to lean on one another. And I think our experience actually
in between the Hall of Fame game and the Pittsburgh preseason game where we played the Hall of Fame,
we stayed in Cleveland, we trained. It was just there was nobody else so that was an opportunity for the team to kind of be together and be around one
another and in the end i mean it's not a cliche but it absolutely matters and it's important and
i think we just want the best version of whoever the person is and just go out there and do your
job and execute at a high level understanding you know this league's hard and we're going to run
into some bumps in the road but how we handle that and how we bounce back
ultimately is going to determine how successful this program is.
God, sounds like a great building.
Yes, it does.
Sounds like an incredible program.
Great culture.
That really does sound like a perfect culture.
It's huge, especially the NFL team.
It's also huge.
I mean, that sounds like a perfect culture, to be clear.
That early, too.
And everybody pitches that shit up on the board, too,
you know, when they're getting interviewed.
Everything that you just said is like –
It's usually garbage.
They usually don't follow through.
Bingo.
That's what I'm saying.
So for it to happen as quickly as it did,
you should be incredibly pumped and proud.
And if you're not there and you're in the A's and South –
If you're in the division, boy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay.
Shit show.
Let's talk about one of the pivotal parts, though, I think,
for this entire thing.
You talk about being coached hard.
Somebody that's been through a bunch.
AJ has a question for you.
Nick, yeah, C.J. Stroud obviously played unbelievable last year.
You hear when people talk about quarterbacks going from year one to year two
and these big jumps that they make.
What have you done with C.J.?
What has he maybe done as he looked out to other people around?
Because there's not a whole lot of people that have stepped in day one
and played as well as he did for you guys.
How is he going to make that jump from year one to year two?
Yeah, it's going to kind of go back to what I talked about a little bit earlier.
It's going to take work, and it's going to get harder.
Like anybody that is in the league year one and has some success,
what you have to realize is what happened that previous year,
in the end, doesn't have any bearing on that current year.
But I would say I'd say where he's probably improved the most is his just
leadership and ownership of the offense of the team.
He wants to be great and going back to holding the people accountable,
establishing a standard. I mean, it starts with the quarterback.
And then I think the big thing as well is just that position. I mean,
you touch the ball in 99.9% of the plays. I mean,
other than if you're getting, you know, wildcat or something like that,
but you have to be a good fiduciary to the team, take care of the football, make smart decisions,
and sometimes do simple great.
And I think sometimes it's hard for just quarterbacks in general
to understand that concept, but mitigating risk is a part of your job,
but also understanding there's a balance.
You want to take some shots, you want to move the ball down the field,
but you want to make the smart play.
But, you know, CJ's a great kid.
He works really hard.
He cares about winning. He cares about football football and i think his relationships with his teammates not only on
the offensive side of the ball but the defensive side of the ball as well has continued to grow
so it's going to take all of us the quarterback is certainly important position on a team but
he's just one part of the group here and everybody just has to go out there and focus on the things
that they do well and then you know we'll see where we are at the end of the game each week everything that
happened at ohio state like set him up perfectly to be an nfl quarterback yep he was mentally
emotionally physically meant everything uh football iq wise with the way they run their
offense over there it's like he was the guy we saw him and i assume it happened for you whenever
you're scouting and i think you told the story of him coming in and talking to the entire scouting department
and not changing at all from the person you had talked to before to that person to the next person.
He knows exactly who he is.
So, like, as a human, you got a chance to learn that then.
We just, as football doofuses, we saw him take on Georgia in Georgia.
Yeah, in Atlanta.
In Atlanta, and it was the first three snaps, I think,
we were standing on the field.
And as somebody who had a front row seat
to a lot of NFL football,
you're not the position of punter.
It's like you watch him move right in front of you,
and it's like, oh yeah, that's an NFL guy right there.
And then you see him,
just an actual flick of the wrist
with where he was putting the ball
and off balance and how big he is.
It's like this is the guy.
Then they try to send that bullshit out about that S2 test
and all this other shit, and it's like he's just big.
None of that matters in the end, how you play.
And I would say just your emotional stability or emotional control
and the ability to handle ups and downs.
I mean, look, everything's not going to be perfect in this league it's just not designed that way so how you're able to push through those things i mean honestly that'll probably be the biggest
thing for our team how we measure ourselves is can we you know deal with the ups and downs
understanding that you know things went well last year but what happened last year doesn't necessarily
have any bearing on this year and you know we certainly have a big challenge in front of us, including
week one against Indianapolis.
Just take it one week at a time. I know it's cliché,
but your emotional stability and
emotional focus and control ultimately
is going to dictate how much success
you have, along with your ability to go out there and play
at a high level and execute.
There's a 45-year-old who happens to be the best teammate
of all time. He came and did our show live whenever we were
in Houston, wearing his teammates' clothing line you know could wear anything onto the show
knows he's going to be on the show he's like oh yeah this is d tackles clothing liners never heard
of it before i think you do great work you look incredibly cool but he'll probably have his own
clothing line at some point i assume he's gonna have a lot of shit yeah as we go forward in the
marketing world with how great he is and how good of a talker he is. Everything about him screams
lead man for the Houston Texans.
Now, you strengthened the roster
around him, seemingly. Big move
this offseason. Con Man's got a question for you.
Yeah, Nick, one of those moves was bringing in Stephon
Diggs, and you just mentioned with D'Amico and the
culture you guys are building. Do you
kind of go through that with
every single guy that you're either trading for
or bringing in with free agency?
And then with Diggs specifically, how did the one-year contract decision come to be?
Is that you talking to Diggs about what he wants,
whether he wanted to continue out his contract that he signed with the Bills,
or was it more so like, hey, this works best for both of us
if we just make this thing a one-year deal and we just go out there and win a Super Bowl?
I think the big thing is anytime you engage in contract negotiations,
it's a two-way street, right?
And I think at some point both sides, a good agreement,
a good final resolution is where everybody kind of feels like, all right,
it's fair for both sides.
So every situation is different.
It's case by case.
As we approach that one, you know, we worked through it
and we felt that was the best way to handle it and approach it. You know, we, you know,
obviously talk to different people on other teams or other players.
You know, case Keenum, who's here with us,
had experience with, with Steph in, in Minnesota.
I would say since he's been here in, in March, I mean, he's been,
he's been great to work with his attitude, his consistency, his work ethic,
his competitiveness, his leadership,
his ability to just go out there and focus on his job.
And we've talked about this a little bit on the show.
When people walk in our building, just be yourself, all right?
We're not going to force you to be something that you're not.
And what happens somewhere else, in the end, we're the Houston Texans,
so we can't worry about what happened in some other locker room,
in other situation.
None of us are in those buildings.
All we can do is focus on our team, our situation.
And some of it's organic, like how it evolves and how it develops.
And if there's something that needs to be addressed or discussed, then, you know,
that's where we just sit and talk and, hey, you know what, a little bit more of this, a little bit less of that.
And, again, treat them like adults and treat them like professionals.
And I think we just try to establish an environment where you're your own person,
be who you are, we trust, we believe in who you are,
and if there's an issue, we'll address it like adults.
And it's just conversational.
It's not adversarial, if you will.
Yeah, we're trying to win here.
That's right.
We all have the same mindset.
We're trying to win.
Let's enjoy who we are, be who we are,
but let's also win. We think this is a better
way to go about doing that. And if you keep the
open lines of communication, I think that's where
that's probably why the success has happened
so quickly for you. Because those uncomfortable
conversations, potentially viewed by some people,
are things that you have obviously
not been scared to have.
Like, for instance, did you chit-chat with the owner when he
shotgunned that beer? Oh, yeah.
Because he dumped a lot of the beer out.
I told him I don't know how to do that, so more power to him.
Yeah, well, he didn't either.
A lot of beer was getting dumped out at the top, but I appreciate the effort.
I appreciate it.
And the hat.
It sounds like a really good concert, so I'll leave the shotgunning of beers to other people.
That's not my cup of tea.
I'll stay with him.
Maybe one day, though.
When it's suitable. Yeah, let's not rule it of tea. I'll stay with him. Maybe one day, though. When it's suitable.
Yeah, when it's suitable.
We'll see.
Yeah, you got that parade through Houston in the middle of February.
No parades.
We're a long way from any parades taking place.
So we're just trying to get on a bus to fly to Indianapolis in a couple weeks.
So that's what we're worried about.
You better strap it up, too, bro.
Speaking of strapping it up, a man who has done that for 15 years in
WWE is here. Seamus
has a question for you, Nick Casario.
Yeah, Nick, come on, man. What's with the attitude?
You know what I mean? You're going in there. You're going in
the first game of the season, man. You've got to be thinking about
the end game. You know what I mean? You've got to think of where you're going.
You know what I mean? You've got to be pumping that open.
That goal obviously is the Super Bowl, right?
That has to be it. Yeah, absolutely.
Well, I think everybody has goals and in the end, everybody plays to Super Bowl, right? That has to be it. Yeah, absolutely. Well, I think everybody has goals,
and in the end, everybody plays to accomplish something, right?
So when you get into WWE,
your goal is to win a Universal Championship.
So that's the goal.
So how do you get to that?
That's gone now, Nick.
That's gone.
Whatever it's called.
I got rid of that Universal thing.
Whatever it is.
But in the end, you have to focus on what's in front of you and it's a combination
of short term and you know look everybody that plays competitive sports they want to you know
ultimately you know they have a goal in mind and in each sport there can only be one winner so
it just takes a series of events over time and but i would say if you have those goals
what are you doing in the interim to get
you to that point? So that's where you got to focus on, all right, that might be the big picture, but
do we have a good practice? Can we make the corrections? Do we come back the next day? Are
we consistent with our habits? Are we consistent with our mindset? Can we go out there and have
the right work ethic and do the right things that are conducive to winning? So, I mean, you get into
sports to to compete and
ultimately everybody has the same goal, but in the end, the end of the year, there's only one team
that can do it. So, you know, we'll all be judged on how we perform and it's going to come down to
how well we execute on 17 Sundays. And if we put ourselves in a position, then ultimately the rest
will take care of itself. Let's talk about putting yourselves in the position. Great question,
Seamus. Let's talk about putting yourselves in that position. Great question, Seamus. Let's talk about putting yourselves in that position. Joint practice, right, today?
I think it was the last one.
Yeah, no, it was great.
It was awesome.
Yeah.
So this is going to be a combo question here.
At this stage of training camp preseason, third preseason games kick off tonight,
Colts playing starters first quarter and a half, Bengals are not.
I believe Kansas City and Chicago both not playing their starters.
How do you view the third preseason game? How many, I don't want to say like spots are available, but like these
joint practices and then this third preseason game, very important to some of the people
down there in Houston right now? Yeah, no, it all makes a difference in the end. You're probably
talking about realistically the last, over the course of the preseason as you get closer, the
last six or eight spots. So how are you going to allocate X number of spots, the 53 on the roster?
And then we're very proactive with the players on the practice squad as well
because at any week they could be available to play.
So we just got to make sure we're giving the players a good opportunity
for a good evaluation.
You know, today was actually the last training camp practice, if you will.
Training camp, you know, is over.
We'll play the preseason game against the Rams.
It's actually our fourth game because we pull all three and a half because we got lightninged out of the second
half of the hall of fame game but we we got really good work with the Rams done today I think there
was 85 90 plays on each side of the ball for so we'll go back and evaluate that and Sean and his
group are really good to work with so and then we'll figure out what do we need to get done in
the game and then ultimately we'll flip the page and what do we have to do to get ready for week one against the Colts?
But every opportunity you have to go on a field and work with another group,
it's invaluable.
And we were able to get a lot accomplished today in a short period of time.
So we're glad that the Rams are here.
How much are you talking to D'Amico about, like, hey,
obviously roster construction, but also, like, hey, these 10 guys,
these 11, 12 guys is who we need to, like like see some from in practice or in the preseason game.
Is that a conversation that's taking place?
Absolutely, Pat.
I mean, we talk about the team probably every day and you're mixing and matching.
You know, you probably have less questions.
The guys that you have less questions about, it's like a draft.
Like once you're done, put that player to bed and move on to the next one.
So just make sure that we make good, sound decisions
and have enough information where we can make an educated decision.
So absolute matter of fact, we talked about, you know, what's today?
Wednesday, Thursday.
We talked about it Monday.
We talked about it Tuesday.
We kind of talked about it.
All right, what do we need to do for the game?
All right, this group.
Maybe this group doesn't play.
We're going to see a little bit more of this group.
And then the hay is in the barn to some degree.
So we're going to take all the information you know we'll have to cut the
roster to 53 on tuesday before the practice squads and then we'll have a couple practices
and everybody get the long bye which will be good kind of everybody get away everybody's put a lot
of work we've been in camp since july 16th or 17th you know because it's a hall of fame game so
our players done a great job they've shown up every day with the right mindset so it'd be good
to kind of get through uh, you know, another opportunity
for some players, cut the team,
and then get ready to go for your Colts.
Hey, good luck
out there. You're going to need it, okay?
They got a good team.
They got a good team. Coach,
or sorry, not coach, Casario,
the
reports out of the joint practice yesterday with Cincinnati,
we got some room.
We got some room to grow.
This is an opportunity.
This is not a bad thing.
We were ridiculed and mocked by quotes from the other team
and from the media.
This is a builder.
Everybody's going to be ready whenever the season starts.
Amen.
Hope so.
Do you keep track of anything going on other places?
You have to, I guess, right?
Don't you?
To a degree.
To a degree.
So our pro scouting staff
they'll go through kind of the entire league they'll watch they we have three or four scouts
they have X number of teams where they're watching players who may get released so looking at that
cohort of players relative to maybe some of our players and then from my perspective I've actually
worked on in the preseason the first three opponents so go through Indy go through Chicago
go through Minnesota it's just part of my process so that once training camp is over we kind of know understand what those
teams what their dynamics are who's on the roster so everybody is working on different things at
different points so we got a great group um but those conversations are absolutely taking place
and it's all about just being prepared putting the work in and then putting ourselves in a position
where we give our players the best opportunity for success, you know, on Sundays.
Yeah. I saw JJ Watt walking around. What are we?
Uh-oh.
What are we doing?
He was at Pittsburgh too.
JJ walking around. So when you have him on the show,
I'm sure you can ask him what his plans are.
That was so Italian of you. Did you hear the way he answered that?
I saw nothing. I don't know what you're talking about.
You can ask him if he wants to talk about it. Have a great season.
Forget about it.
Exactly.
Hey, we can't thank you enough for the time today, man.
Good luck the rest of the way, and we'll see you this season, hopefully, a bunch.
Always great to be on with you.
I really appreciate you having us, Pat.
No problem, man.
We'll tell Seamus that you don't follow the product and don't know the title.
All right.
Ladies and gentlemen, Nick Casario.
He's a good dude.
He's been very good to our show.
Yeah. Texans as a whole. Very, whole very very good like the nicest out of everybody and digs friend of the program
yeah add another one cj friend of the program he's so good on our show yeah
when cj was up there talking on radio Row and Burt Kreischer came in.
Oh, man.
Muscle hamster?
What is this?
Started talking shit.
He started burying Burt Kreischer,
who was having a good time that morning.
You know, he had a couple Gs.
He split the G a few times.
Yeah, he did.
Had some of the pos oros or locos.
Porosos, I believe.
No, pos locos.
You might be right, actually.
I think it is Porosos.
Los Pocos.
That's on me.
Tom Segura, Burt, I'm a big fan of them, but I don't think CJ necessarily is.
They've been great to our show.
They're very good.
Too quick.
Too quick.
They got too good.
Good quarterback.
And that's out of Ohio State because you guys tried to kick him out of town, right?
I'm telling you, the first game I
saw him play in person, CJ, first ball
I saw him throw, I was like, oh, uh-oh.
This is it. This is our dude.
What about this year? Who's the guy for Will Howard?
Will Howard, he's a big old dude,
man. Big, tall, physical guy that can
run and throw. I'm excited for him. I know
the problem is if Ohio State loses a game,
they're going to point to him most likely.
Greatest roster in a decade or something like that,
I think is what Urban Meyer... Never. That's what they say, but
everyone knows great rosters
don't win you championships. No, great performances
do. Hell yeah. Will these boys be able
to do it? Coach Dutch Danger's been coaching Ohio State.
He was in a dogfight last night against Michigan State.
Go green.
Tough loss. Tough loss against
Penn State. Tough loss. You lost to Penn State
after Michigan State? Uh-huh.
Oh, my God.
I mean, look, sometimes the game games.
And the game was gaming yesterday, okay?
I mean, Tommy Wabah, my star middle linebacker,
who actually kind of schemed his game to A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter.
He had posters.
Yeah, kind of a combination of the two.
I mean, he tackled a guy in the backfield.
Guy breaks a tackle, goes 80 yards for a touchdown.
Got to make the tackle.
Tommy Wabah does not miss tackles.
He doesn't.
That's when you know the game's gaming.
Their first touchdown was bullshit.
And then, once again, I mean, a deep ball at the end of the first half.
Creed Malecki can't kind of find the connection with Eli Chance down the
sideline with zero.
Who comes up with the names for real?
They do.
They do. They do.
Yeah, it's all generated.
So it's all just generated.
There's that PJ Hawk, I think.
Could you birth a kid and grow him up from birth to 18 and get him a scholarship?
In real life?
Well, that too, but also in the game?
Yeah, I think so.
In the game, you can, if you want.
Feed him, give him extra protein, let's juice him up.
Yeah, work him out.
Performance enhancers when he's in high school.
Extra practice.
Oh, so that's when you did it? So you did it in high school.
31 tackles, three games. Can you imagine dudes
juicing in high school? How unfair it is.
What was that? Benny and the Roids was the
documentary we had to watch in
health class. Benny and the Roids. That was
Vince Vaughn. I forgot to ask him. He was a part of like an
after school program show
where I think he and... Magic
School Bus. Him and, was it Aflac, took
steroids and were like banging their shoulders.
It was the funniest.
It was not supposed to be funny.
It was an absolute comedy show.
You didn't take steroids, right?
Because of that.
No, not because of that.
That did not scare me away.
By the way, you're not on trial right now.
Yeah.
You know what I'm saying?
No, I didn't.
No, I didn't.
But it got me thinking, though.
Kids could absolutely juice in high school. Did they test you in high school? Did you get tested? No. I didn't. No, I didn't. But it got me thinking, though. Kids could absolutely juice in high school.
Did they test you in high school?
Did you get tested?
No, not really.
I don't remember getting tested.
Kids in the league that I played in in high school, they got busted for taking steroids.
You guys got drug tested in the league you were in?
Like, it was very player-specific.
So it was kind of like how the MLB, you know, the story Kevin Ukel has told,
where, like, guys will come in after the offseason, and, like, clearly they are much different.
So the school tested them then?
Yes.
Yeah, yeah.
Not like the league.
There's no league in high school.
Not the eyes of the league, no.
I lost friends that way.
I walked in the locker room, and I saw him inject himself, and I said,
man, we can't be doing that.
We've got to play the game the right way.
And, like, I had to tell the coach, and the coach had to leave.
What movie is this?
Is this Benny and the Roids?
I don't know. Is this Benny and the Roids? I don't know.
Is this Benny and the Roids?
We watched that in high school.
Is it a program?
It's partially Benny and the Roids, and it's partially Remember the Titans.
But that was because he wasn't blocking.
No one was juicing in Remember the Titans.
No, I said because he wasn't blocking.
You talking about Ray?
Yeah, Ray wasn't blocking.
Yeah.
Seamus has to be so confused right now.
We're talking about a video game.
Coach Dutch Danger at Ohio State, five-time. Seamus has to be so confused right now. We're talking about a video game, coach Dutch Danger,
at Ohio State, five-time national champion.
Soon to be sixth.
We're talking about actual Ohio State football this upcoming season.
And then we're talking about a movie.
Well, Seamus was watching the TV up here to the right instead of the ginormous one to his left
or across from him above your head as well when Casario was on.
Yeah, I just like to make things awkward for myself. know what i mean well you beat the out of that microphone today
banger after banger after banger after banger now that's so that was your hand in the microphone
today was it then how about it you don't have to have the option just to turn it off whatever i
thought just comes on when i speak no i'll just say ah okay yeah we didn't tell you though you didn't tell you though i didn I thought it just comes on when I speak, no? I was just saying. Ah, okay.
We didn't tell you, though.
We didn't tell you, though.
I didn't even expect to be on the show this morning, to be honest.
I just flew up this morning to jump in the jet to go to Dublin, so I didn't even know I was going to be on the show.
Well, we're happy you're here, bud.
Well, we're getting to Dublin.
Yeah, dude.
Just, yeah.
Just him saying that.
I can't believe we're actually going.
I'm so fortunate.
A couple of hours, right?
Yeah, two or three.
So far.
That's fine.
How far is it seven hours eight I
think that's not bad it's easy yeah okay I've driven driven longer than that yeah but you're
in a professional wrestler yeah but still like it's all the other lads are not driving they're
having to crack you know what I mean everyone's well it's a camaraderie party camaraderie we're
gonna have a camaraderie crack oh yeah okay wait we. We're going to have a camaraderie crock.
Oh, yeah.
I can't wait.
We get there five minutes. All the lads get to ask you for raises and stuff.
You know what I mean?
You know what I mean?
That'd be good for the boys.
That'd be good for the boys up there, 40,000 feet above the line of coach.
That'd be a good car.
That probably happened.
Play some cards.
We got some Guinness.
Anyone bringing any cards?
Yeah, we got a couple of decks.
Always got cards.
What?
You don't have to.
You're not fucking playing.
Is Foxy?
First, I'll do whatever.
But Foxy, you want to.
Foxy's a great partner.
Partners, yep.
Let's go.
Okay.
Yep.
All right.
Yeah.
Seamus, here's the deal.
You don't know the game.
We've already talked about this.
But you're a quick learner.
Okay?
So you'll figure it out.
There's a game called Euchre.
It was created in Pennsylvania.
Ohio.
Michigan.
Okay. It was. I mean, It was created in Pennsylvania. Ohio. Michigan. It was
created by the Amish. I think we're taking
valor from the Amish.
Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Dutch actually.
A lot of Amish in Michigan. Yeah, they
moved. Nothing was fucking created in Michigan.
We know that. Cars. Pennsylvania
is literally where the Quakers were founded.
Bingo. I think that's the same as the Amish.
Welcome for the Quaker Oats too. That's from us. And Heinz Ketchup. But anyways, a game called Euchre. Bingo. I think that's the same as Amish. You're welcome for the Quaker Oats, too.
That's from us.
And Heinz ketchup.
But anyway, it's a game called Uyghur.
Great game.
You're Amish?
I'm Irish.
All right, okay.
All right, if you say so.
Well, we are going to learn.
We're going to find out when we get there.
We're really going to learn.
I'm 0.01% Italian, too.
Let's not get, you know, twisted in this entire thing.
So, and then I think there's a lot of German from my mother in there.
But this genealogy report, I'm kind of freaked out about.
Like, now that I've overthought it, I can't wait to learn about what some member of my
father's father's father's father's father, what they did, how they did it.
It'd be cool.
Is it?
Yeah, it's good.
Depends what they did, I guess.
And what's the worst thing they're going to be like? Oh, yeah, your fucking
great-great-great-great-great-grandpa, he was a
fucking piece of shit.
That's happened to a few people. Okay, he's dead now.
Good.
Glad he died. You want to talk about heritage?
But anyways, I'm not Amish.
Don't talk
to me
about heritage. Isn't that the reality is?
The reality is, yeah, you don't want to talk to him about heritage.
Anyways, the Uker, great game.
I'm not Amish, but the Amish, I do believe, created it.
It's spelled in an interesting fashion.
E-U-C-H-R-E, I believe, is the way the game is spelled.
I didn't learn about it, though, until I came out here to Indiana.
Great game.
You can eat up five hours, just like.
You're going to find out.
Yeah.
You're going to say say five i don't know
what's that we're gonna find out because we got seven and a half so ty i'm excited to see what
performance you put on oh i think you know what performance i'm fucking licking my lips already
i'm ready to he was he was basing it yesterday in the uh in the office just kind of getting ready
we know you're gonna we got enough waters on board for you, Seamus.
We're landing at 5 a.m., though,
so you've done this trip before.
Legitimately, what do we do?
How do we...
We try to sleep when we get there, I think.
I'm trying to stay up, I think, this whole flight.
I think that is the goal.
Let me try, for sure.
The time you get from the airport downtown,
it's going to be 45 minutes, right?
So are you going to sleep the whole day or are you just going to enjoy the city?
I just enjoy the city.
I just keep going.
Oh, you're saying that I should maybe take like two hours on the plane?
Second half, perhaps.
I just think you just enjoy, do as much as you can before you leave.
Because what are you guys flying back?
Sunday, is it?
Saturday night.
Late Saturday.
After a game and dinner and stuff like that so you
think no sleep even though friday night we're we're gonna have one after the show yeah so what
would your plans so you're saying be up for 48 to 72 straight hours and that's why you always say
what's the crock like it seems like we might need the crock it feels like she wants to go banger
after banger after banger after banger That's right I'm just saying
Just enjoy as much
Of the city as you can
You know what I mean
When are you guys
Going to be back you know
Like you got to experience it
You know
If you got crack
Just tell us brother
Because I mean
I can buy in
If we're talking about it now
It's with a C man
It's with a C
Yeah
Yeah
Dull
Oh the end is with a C
Yeah C-R-A-C
C-R-A-I-C
Oh
Crack
Some crick
What's the crick What's the Craig?
That's the Craig.
But no, listen.
Craig.
Do what you want to do, but I'll be home.
Are you going to sleep on the plane?
I don't know.
I don't trust any of you lads.
Let's see what happens.
See, that's the thing.
Trust me.
I'm going to wake up with no eyebrows or something.
I'll be sleeping on the plane.
Cards, though, this guy.
Can't.
You don't do cards?
No, he cheats.
I'll play Euchre sometimes.
The entire time.
He's a great partner.
I'll sleep if I need to, though.
I'm not scared.
I'm not going to mess with anybody if they sleep, too.
That's not my thing.
We've got life to live over there.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But no, I love Euchre.
Especially Foxy back there behind the fern that you saw earlier.
Yeah.
He's a very positive, great Euchre partner.
AJ's a great partner as well.
Yeah, they cheat.
They cheat together.
Take a little time.
AJ's the enforcer.
AJ will look at your hand.
He will attempt to look at your hand. He will
deal from the bottom of the deck. Like the things you
hear out of the movies. I wish I could. Exactly.
Like rounders. These things you hear out of
the movies, like people don't actually try that type
of stuff. Like people are just going to try to look at your hand.
People are going to grab your hand to
pull your card so they can look at your hand. It's like
nobody would ever do that in real life in cards.
AJ does all of them. All of them.
You'll see. You'll threaten to fight you too. What are you going to do? Nobody would ever do that in real life in cards. AJ does all of them. All of them.
Threaten to fight you, too.
What did he do?
Fight me?
That's what he said. He said that before.
I go, stop grabbing my cards.
You want to fight me?
He's like, okay.
Okay.
That was really what he said.
He did.
Many times.
That's right.
Where are these rules?
No, it's because you guys, I struggle when people say, you can't do that. Why not? Why can't I do that? Because it's a rule. And then he goes, where are these rules? No, it's because you guys, I struggle when people say, you can't do that.
Why not?
Why can't I do that?
Because it's a rule.
And then he goes, where are these rules?
No, but it's not, though.
It's like you usually say that when it's like a gray area and it's not actually a rule.
Yeah, but then he says, if you can find where these rules are written down, I'll play by them.
So then you try to search it.
You find it.
He goes, look up a different state's rules, though.
There's different rules.
And it's like, okay.
So now there's no rules, I guess.
And then what?
What?
You fight me?
Okay.
Okay.
I don't fight anybody.
Yeah, but you would, though.
No.
Yeah.
We're not playing for money, by the way, either.
I would never.
They act like.
True, true, true.
They act like I would never do that one.
Like, I understand that.
A lot of pride in the sky.
Yeah.
Pride for points.
I'm not cheating.
So the games I played, like, so I don't even remember how the rules sky. Yeah. Pride for points. I'm not cheating.
So the games I played, like, so I don't even remember how to rules anymore,
but I remember playing Gin when I was a kid.
Trying to score points.
And Rummy.
That was another one.
Good games.
There'll probably be one of those games on the flight, I assume.
Slapjack.
I'm just so out of it. Go Fish.
Go Fish, yeah.
I just Snap.
That was the...
What's Snap?
Snap, where you have one card and the other card, and you Snap,
and you take the cards
War
War
They call it war over here
Yeah
Just hire a card
And then you reshuffle
And you go again
And again
And again
You can do that at casinos
For like
A never ending amount of money
That's a real deal
They really take advantage
Of people that are just like
Oh fuck it
I think my card
Will be higher than yours
A thousand bucks
And that person's been me
Before walking by
One card
First one card
Yeah A thousand bucks Let's see how this goes And inevitably you tie Then they gotta burn three There's $1,000, and that person's been me before walking by. One card versus one card.
Yeah, $1,000.
Let's see how this goes.
And inevitably, you tie.
Then they've got to burn three, and you've got to match.
And then we're doing another one.
And then if it's another tie, you're off and running.
You lose, actually.
Tie goes to the deal.
Every time.
Every time.
It's a good game, though.
It is a good game.
Snop is what you call it.
Snop.
All right, we're not going to play any war, but we should get on a plane.
Cannot wait to get to your home country of Ireland.
Excited that you're traveling with us.
I think you're going to be a part of our program tomorrow,
and you're going to be a part of College Game Day.
I think we're just hanging out with you, Seamus, in Dublin.
Yeah.
That should be a lot of fun, a lot of waters, obviously.
Boys, let's travel safely and be smart.
Absolutely.
And to the people in Ireland,
we can't wait to experience your country.
And to the people that are traveling over there to watch football over there,
we can't wait to enjoy the city
of Publin alongside of you.
Let's enjoy it all. Let's put
some G's, boys. Hell yeah. Sounds good.
Three gulps and a sip for Pete Thamel. Who knows what it is
for everybody else? Do it in one, man.
Hold on one. Amen. One gulp.
Big gulp. How many ounces
would that be, you think? 16?
No, to get to the middle of the G. Eight?
I don't know.
Like about six ounces or so.
Probably.
I'm not an ounces guy.
It's more towards the top.
What are you?
The top three quarters.
You like quarter pounds?
No, it's more like ILA, you know?
Kilos?
Protea INA.
So how many ounces are in a pint?
16?
16?
I believe so, yeah.
16 ounces?
16 ounces in a pint.
So that's probably like four ounces, I'd assume, down to the G.
Looking at the drink that Stanford Steve posted, it's probably about a quarter of it. Sounds probably like four ounces, I'd assume, down to the G. Looking at the drink that Stanford Steve posted,
it's probably about a quarter of it.
Sounds about right. Yeah, I'd say so, yeah.
So you gotta do about four ounces.
That's easy.
You got loads of time to practice anyway.
What, on the flight over?
Do we actually have Guinness glasses as well?
Plenty of Guinness.
I don't know if we have the-
Do you have the Guinness glasses?
That's what we need,
because that's where the Guinness is on.
I mean, this guy and the things he needs
Jesus Christ
Playing won't take off
Alright let's enjoy the shit out of this
Ireland we will see you soon
Well a long time but soon
And then tomorrow we'll be live from a pub in downtown Dublin
I think it's going to be worth it
I think it's going to be worth watching
And then college football kicks off for real
And then we're in it We're in football season Let's go. I think it's going to be worth watching. And then college football kicks off for real.
And then we're in it.
We're in football season.
Let's enjoy it all.
All right.
Be a friend.
Tell a friend something nice.
It might change their life.
We're in this thing together.
Never forget it.
Football, baby.
It's back.
Let's go.
Team on me.
We hope you heal up.
Team on three.
One, two, three. Team on me.
Team on me.
Team on me.
