Hello, beautiful people. It is Thursday, July 28th, 2022, and a lot is happening in the world of sports.
This show begins now.
Let's ride.
Okay, maybe that's getting played out because everybody's doing it, but we will continue to do as such because it's such a good vibe setter.
Such a good momentum starter. It is such a great day to be a sports show yeah absolutely it
is you know i understand that the politics world get a chance to chat about things year round and
there's always some hot topic for them to yell at each other about and i understand the news world
is always having something happening but in the sports world especially a football show the off
season is real thing the off season is something where you wake up in the morning if you're one of
these hosts of one of these shows, and you
get in the shower, and you actually think to yourself,
fuck. Yep.
What?
What? What?
Am I talking about today? No, I'm not talking about it.
No clue. Numerous weeks, it was all
hearsay and rumors and lawsuits and
allegations and bullshit, and now
we are happy to inform you that
the NFL is in full swing.
And this is four straight days of me saying that,
but we can never forget what it was like just a few weeks ago
where we had to basically deal with a bunch of bullshit all the time.
Now there is going to be bullshit throughout the NFL season,
like injuries, which has already taken place,
and a very big spot for a very important team.
There's also many of other things that are negative,
but the positives way, way, way outweigh the negatives
when we're in the football season.
And we are very thankful that you're here watching and listening
wherever the hell you may be.
The fact that you allow us to be a part of your day,
we are eternally grateful for.
Joining me every single day in the studio from the Talks at Table
at Ty Schmidt at Boston Corner.
How you doing, pal?
Doing great. Like you said, pal? Doing great.
Like you said, I mean, football's back.
You know, we talked with Darius Butler yesterday.
You asked him, hey, early in camp, the defense is always going to be way ahead of the offense.
First day, Raj, 1-0 against the defense.
Packers are back, baby.
We might not have Devontae, but I am feeling fantastic today.
Aaron Rodgers said it's, you know, always going to be difficult whenever you go Hall of Famer to Hall of Famer
with Alan Lazard becoming the new number one in the room
or perceived number one.
Nice little joke back at Devontae Adams
who in his interview with Josina Anderson said
there's always going to be a transition
when you go Hall of Famer to Hall of Famer
when he was talking about Carr and Aaron Rodgers.
Had to walk those back, obviously,
because Carr might be a Hall of Famer.
We don't know.
Don't think he's cemented his past yet into the Hall.
There's a chance he could, especially with Devonta Adams
and the way that team has gone all in.
So Aaron Rodgers obviously never missing a moment, never missing a beat.
Goes boom, Alan Lazard's our guy now.
Let's go ahead and move on and do it.
But isn't it kind of scary to you whenever you hear something like that?
This is just like the fans at training camp.
Fans at training camp are awesome.
And we'll take a look at some of the fans around the NFL
that have been to training camps
and other training camps that don't have any fans.
But there's always a big cheer for the offense having success.
And I remember me, Vinny, Overton, special teams guys standing on the sideline watching this happen.
It's like, hey, this is two, three weeks straight now where there's a lot of celebrating from the crowd.
two, three weeks straight now where there's a lot of celebrating from the
crowd. And you want
to turn around to the crowd and be like,
hey, that's our
fucking defense getting smoked.
Absolutely smoked.
The Packers' defense is supposed to be
maybe the power of the team at this point.
Now, you have Aaron Rodgers on the team, so the offense
is always going to be considered great.
A.J. Dillon, who got bodied by that cop
in Green Bay, who probably doesn't have a job anymore,
at the Manchester United, and Aaron Jones, and Alan Lazard,
and they got that big country of Indiana State, what's his name?
Yeah, Bob Tunyon.
Big Bob Tunyon, and I believe Big Dog's back as well again for another year.
So they still have some pieces, but the defense is supposed to be like the thing.
Right.
And early in training camp, see ball, get ball, defense is normally good.
So you liked Aaron Rodgers saying, hey hey one of those chumps over there does that mean that all the hype about
the defense is not worth a single fuck or is that just because aaron rogers comes into green bay
and can still sling the pill and got everything in all the right pieces yeah i mean i think it's
more so that you mentioned it i mean if you have rogers like guess he's gonna get the defense you
know i mean it's not like you got drew lock out there and he's torching your your defense no shot at drew
lock but i'm just saying it's aaron fucking rogers i mean we could you imagine being the gm of seattle
and saying that yeah it's true lock we got playing quarterback geno smith we ain't got we ain't got
aaron we ain't got like paths on i mean this is fucking drew lock and gino yeah that's what the
vikings gm just yesterday yeah That's what the Vikings GM did.
Yeah, that's what the Vikings GM did after giving a $40 million deal to Kirk.
So I think you're allowed to say whatever you want.
You're 100% right.
I think the resume proves it.
What you're saying is, hey, Aaron Rodgers is probably going to have his days.
And also that a lot of guys were hurt on the defense last year.
So, you know, I mean, we've got a couple new first-round picks who are going to be out there.
Like, they're going to have time to come together.
But, yeah, anytime I see something like that where it's like the defense gets burned from
camp you just fucking amounted to like oh yeah rogers is out there just slinging the pill so
it's kind of a double-edged sword well and fans get real excited every single time the offense
scores right every single time i i mean i remember our d we had our ones in and they were going
against our twos at one point and for some reason our ones defense were not having a good day
and the offense is scoring
and it was like guy who ain't ever gonna be on the fucking team throwing to another guy that
ain't gonna be on the fucking team they score a touchdown crowd goes crazy our guys are out there
that are gonna be on the team and i'm just like hey don't be so fucking basic up here like what's
but that's the game the offense is always going to bring the applause, and the defense is just going to be expected to do their job.
Hopefully the Packers, D, can maybe, you know, staring down the goat,
having a time.
Maybe they're able to get even better.
Maybe iron sharpens iron.
Maybe that defense will do everything they thought they were going to do,
or maybe Aaron Rodgers will continue to do what he has done to everybody,
basically, which is slice and dice at this point.
How many more years will that Packers team need to get back into the Super Bowl?
Yeah, got to go now.
All eyes are on this year in Green Bay.
Boston Connor, we have a massive show today.
Hey, we have a massive, massive show today, Connor.
Huge.
Tommy Kern, I believe he's boots on the ground, too, in New England.
Love to hear from him.
That's right, Connor.
Anybody else we have going on yeah of course you know rick stride and aq okay and dr alan sill whoa hey that's pretty
big put a little bit of fucking emphasis whenever you're saying dr alan sill of course did not know
you were gonna unveil everybody that was coming either but you are the right guy to do it the we
have a new segment coming here in like 10 minutes called feel the beat and we're going to beat
writers beat reporters that are at training camps to see how things are going.
Tom E. Curran up in New England, he will stop by live from camp.
Rick Stratt, live in Tampa Bay, will join us.
Then we have AQ Shipley because that'll tie back to what Rick Stratt will probably talk to us about because that's a big deal.
And it was what we kind of led off the show with, and let's dive into it.
And then Dr. Alan Sills the nfl's chief medical officer uh we don't want to like just pinpoint one particular thing that
dr alan sills has done because i don't know a lot that dr alan sills has done but i do know there
was a time and we were all there when dr fatch was saying that football cannot happen in the
middle of that and dr alan sills actually came out and said, hey, shut the fuck up.
We're playing football.
And then the season just went off without a hitch.
There was a couple of delays.
There was this.
There was that.
There was little outbreaks in every single team in the outside world that is much smarter than the sports world, by the way.
Much smarter than us.
That is what's going to happen.
Nobody died from what we will ask Dr. Alan Sills if any NFL players died from COVID,
which we hope was not the case or anything like that.
But he took a stand, and that's where I think we really got introduced to this guy.
Ever since then, now he's got the Guardian capsule.
He's put in for the helmets on top for offense alignment, defense alignment, tight ends, and linebackers.
But some teams are even putting him on running backs, wide receivers.
I believe everybody's having him.
I think the rule only states offensive line, defensive line,
tight end, and linebackers.
But it might be a, hey, if one person has to do it, we're all going to do it.
It's all be safe.
We'll talk to him about that.
We'll talk to him about everything else going on in the world
and that decision he made in the middle of COVID to have the NFL going.
We also, in the field of beat, Mark Caboli?
Mark Caboli.
Is Caboli?
I mean, I don't know.
One head shaking yes who knows the person.
One person who doesn't know the person
is in my ear telling me a correction.
I mean, Mark's joined us.
He's at the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He'll be the third.
What's that?
12-40.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So he's a part of field of beat. He'll be the final. He's live at Pittsburgh Steelers, he'll be the third. What's that? 12-40. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
So he's a part of Feel the Beat.
He'll be the final.
He's live at Pittsburgh Steelers camp where there is a quarterback competition happening.
So we got segments today.
We got guests today.
We got stories today.
We got doctors today.
Here we go.
We got fucking everything happening.
I'm excited for it.
AJ Hawk will join us in the next hour.
At Tone Diggs, what's going on, pal?
Don't worry.
Yenzer said caboli, caboli, caboli, caboli.
It doesn't matter.
Well, I mean, the people behind the glass had no idea that their little debate in my ear
while I'm speaking is just not wanted by anybody.
But I do appreciate the fact that we had six different answers
at one different time.
And I've never met the guy.
I should know who the fuck the guy is, though.
He's Steelers beat reporter.
Is that who this guy is?
Yeah, for the athletic, he's very good.
Okay, let's go, Mark.
There you go.
Let's go, Marky.
Let's go, Marky.
Behind the glass at Nick Morado doing some booking.
Zito doing a lot of booking and wearing a lot of hats.
I appreciate you, Z.
I mean, don't need a full debate in one ear while I'm speaking on what the guy's name is.
But massive respect for both of you.
It's actually pretty funny because I literally said, how do you pronounce it?
And he said, Bali.
So I don't know anymore.
Okay, thank you.
Mitt is here.
Z, you're doing a great job.
Mitt is here on the ones and twos.
We appreciate that
And also
Dirty sitting in the back
Need to have him on the show
Because this is
The whitest show
We've ever had
Okay
Dirty we appreciate you
Dirty
Hey Dirty
We appreciate the hell
Out of you pal
I appreciate y'all man
No you're doing great
Graphics are awesome
And also Dirty
Was the one to point out
All the white
Very white show
Thanks a lot, Dirty.
Hey, Dirty, we appreciate you, pal.
We appreciate the hell out of you.
We have requests for others to come on the show today, too,
so it might be packed out.
It should be a glorious day.
Let's dive into it.
This morning, a terrible situation occurred in Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp.
This is something that happens at every training camp at some point.
This is something that happens in football.
You just have to hope, A, that it's not career-ending,
and B, that it isn't like the most important parts of your team.
Now, that sounds incredibly shallow, but that's the name of the game in the NFL.
The injury bug will hit every single team.
It's who it hits and how deep are you in that position.
Ryan Jensen down in a huddle screaming this morning at training camp practice, same practice that we saw videos of tom brady throwing great balls to julio julio looks explosive coming
out of his cuts looks excited he's not the one guy he's gonna be like three guy four guy who
knows what they're gonna do camp it looked like it was going swimmingly ryan jensen though ends
up tearing his acl i don't know that's right her knee's knee. You can put that tweet back up there, Mitt.
Buckcenter, Ryan Jensen just went down.
A golf cart came out to get him
and all teammates huddled around him. He's heading
to the training room. Todd Bowles, that's from Jenna Lane.
Todd Bowles, head coach of
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, came out in his press conference
and said it was a knee injury. I don't want
to say, I mean, I guess I just kind of said
in ACL, that's what kind of everybody just assumes
when something like this happens. Ryan Jensen has been a pretty pivotal part of that Tampa Bay
Buccaneers team. Not only as a tone setter, as a great player, he made the Pro Bowl All-Pro.
He just came back because Tom Brady basically said, hey, need you back. That is a devastating
loss for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We hope it is something that we don't assume it is. We hope it's
just a couple of weeks, maybe a tweak, tweak maybe something happened but anytime a big bad tough motherfucker like jensen in the offense line and ends up going
down he's heard to be screaming right i think people said and the entire team huddles around
and that whole thing happens you have to obviously assume the worst and i hate that for the tampa
buccaneers now aq shipley will join us in about an hour, front of the program, former backup center for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
knows Jensen very well,
and also has been training Robert Hainsey out of Notre Dame,
who's the backup center for the Buccaneers in Arizona all offseason.
Can't wait to chat with him about the whole situation,
but this fucking stinks.
The center, obviously the leader of the offensive line,
very important.
We're day two of training camp.
This is fucking a bummer.
Yeah, and you
mentioned it earlier like this is why all the fodder that we've been talking about doesn't
mean shit because stuff like this happens you know during training camp where a team kind of
completely changes and i don't know you know the bucks are probably going to be fine they still
have brady and all those weapons but jensen's such a massive part of that old line like that's a huge
hole that they have to fill but i mean if anybody can get the backup ready, it's AQ Shipley.
AQ Shipley been a center for like 10 different teams been around.
He got into coaching.
He was coaching this guy one-on-one basically all off season.
So I don't want to say like perfect timing for Bob Hainsey to get an
opportunity,
but it feels like Bob Hainsey is probably more prepared than he's ever been
for this.
Stinks about Jensen,
all pro talent,
definitely a leader beloved. I think by fucking everybody in tampa bay not only in the roster are in the locker room but also in the city bob hainsey who tristan works that's how he called
him i guess in his press conference uh i think he's ready and this is the next man up thing that
you don't expect to happen but here we are day two or day three of training camp and your start
your stud probably out until
we get confirmation but probably out for a bit yeah i mean you would know more but i would assume
anytime they're bringing the card out like that it's usually not like a guy's going back in and
he like sprained his knee or whatever i mean maybe i don't know i see paul pierce what poop
right i'm saying in the nfl i think you know when a guy's getting carded off yeah exactly usually
not good but also like you never want to lose a guy like this but like you were saying like if you do have to lose him this is kind of the best time to do it
right because now hainsey or whoever is going to get the you know most of the reps he's going to be
the starting center throughout all of camp and then by the time the first week rolls around it's
not like uh you know we lost our guy six days ago and i had to basically get ready right away like
you're going into the season now knowing like, okay, well,
I'm going to be the guy.
So like, you know, it kind of almost changes the approach.
I think Hainsey's mindset, you know, he was ready whenever.
I think he also has a lot of respect for Jensen.
We'll have to ask AQ, but AQ was Jensen's backup,
had a lot of respect for Jensen.
I mean, there is just, you know, that offensive line room.
And there's definitely some positives that we can find in that.
And I like your being a silver lining guy,
especially because you're a new dad
silver lining for
old Bob Hainsey but there's
never a good time to lose a guy like Judson and that's
just the reality of the NFL though is
at some point something like this is going to take place
throughout an NFL season because it is a
you know very physical
very violent game no matter how
many rules Dr. Alan Sills try to put in
to make the game survive longer and become you know okay for parents okay their kids to play the game for the
future generations to come it's always going to be violent there's always going to be collisions
especially in those trenches man i don't know how motherfuckers don't get hurt every single play
there's big bodies a lot of strength obviously a lot of emotion jobs on the line championships
on the line legacies on the line things you've worked for and
you're just in there like your knees are exposed at almost all times whether it's a running back
coming up behind you another offensive lineman a d lineman i don't know how people are able to
survive in there that's why i never was able to do so but jensen's quite a fucking blow he's good
for the nfl too he puts a shield on on. Fucking late hitting people. Long hair.
He's just out there doing his thing.
Go ahead, Tony.
Which Bucks O-lineman was thinking about retiring after this season?
That was Ali Marpet, who
did retire. Jansen was
free agent. Yeah, and he signed back.
Whenever Tom came back.
Kappa also left. The card thing's probably not good,
but I know yesterday at Steelers camp, a guy
got hurt or whatever, and he's fine. But the training room was just a fuck ton farther away than anyone ever
thought at st vincent college so they just take everyone on a card i think to the top to the
trainer's room and so it could be similar bucks but probably not i don't know was everybody huddled
around the guy no no no yeah that's normally the huddle around, like, hands-on. Like, that's – you see that with other players from other teams do it
whenever somebody off the – I was in Tampa Bay.
I was in Tampa Bay, and a guy on our team had a D-lineman.
Nasty.
Like, his leg just ended up going sideways.
I think it was a primetime game as well.
And Bucs players were out.
Everybody's, like, on a knee almost.
Like, hey, man, fucking hate to hear it.
I don't know what Jensen's injury is.
We can hold out hope that this isn't, you know, a season ender.
All signs are pointing to potential season ender.
And we'll have to get to the bottom of it with Rick Stroud
whenever we feel the beat here in a few minutes.
Other news coming out
of the nfl sheena quick yes sheena quick carolina panthers beat reporter was the first to tweet the
debo's deal seems to be coming up here yeah uh 70 million dollars in guarantees potentially is
what's been leaked he's in the middle of a current hold-in in san francisco he is at training camp
he's not participating in anything.
He's kind of off the field.
There's no reason to get injured right now before this deal gets done.
And it puts a little bit of pressure on the Niners to get the deal done.
Congrats to Debo.
Seems like he's going to end up getting money.
Congrats to Torrey Dondi, who is the wide receiver agent of the Stars,
who's had quite an offseason with Hollywood Brown, A.J. Brown, D.K. Metcalf,
who is either
holding in or still injured, maybe
getting his deal done, and then now
Deebo Samuel, which seems to be on the precipice
of a $70 million guarantee for the San Francisco
49ers. Yeah, and once they started talking
about that, I think it was Rap Sheet said that
the Jimmy G scenario basically
plays no part in this.
Weren't we just kind of assuming
like, okay, this is probably going to get done then?
I think him being there,
it made everybody assume that this was going to get done.
It says a lot.
I think that was that.
Now, does that deal get done
before Jimmy G's let off the roster?
Ian Rapport has told me yes.
It sounds like it.
It does not matter.
It does not matter at all.
I just think naturally, if you're going to give a massive contract somebody and you already have somebody
on a rather large contract and you're about to get rid of that 20 million dollars that just seems
like logical but i guess one does not have anything to do with the others yeah but like if you want to
do right by jimmy or you kind of want him to be able to go to his new team but not when you're
like halfway through training camp right or does it even matter and they're just going to cut them if they don't get any trade requests
in the next week or so?
I think they said they're going to hold on hope, right?
They said they're going to hold on hope that somebody will want to trade
because there might be an injury at some training camp.
Some quarterback, maybe Jimmy G, will become a little bit more expensive.
Somebody we all just assume is going to get cut,
and then he'll be a free agent.
We might be wrong.
We are Stooges.
Speaking of Stooges, us Stooges thought of a new segment,
and it can only happen during training camp because everybody seems to be at practices.
It's time to go to the people that know the teams the best.
It's time to go to the local reporters.
It's time to feel the beat.
Feel the beat.
Nailed it.
Oh.
Whoa.
Wow.
We'll go to some beat reporters that are here at the end.
We've got to put a still freeze frame at the end so we don't go to do the news.
Let's put that in series.
Let's remember that.
Let's remember that for tomorrow.
Joining us now, beat reporter for NBC Sports Boston of the New England Patriots
and has been doing so for, what, 50 years?
Yeah, just about.
Boots on the ground.
Made some news yesterday talking about who's the offense coordinator,
who's calling plays, who's doing what.
Ladies and gentlemen, friend of the show, Tom E. Curry.
Yeah, Tom E.
Oh, my God, this is amazing.
Crouch shot, great hat.
We're at practice.
It's training camp.
Let's go, Tom E.
How are you, pal?
I didn't know it was going to be that compromising.
Let's do this.
No, no.
No, it was a good shot.
It was a good shot.
It wasn't compromising.
It was a compliment.
I think everybody on the internet is like, holy hell.
Look at Tommy swinging out there.
You can do whatever you want.
Be comfortable, Tom.
How's camp?
How's the temperature?
Is it hot as hell up there?
It is not.
It was sweltering. It was Africa hot last week. It has actually cooled off a touch. It's camp? How's the temperature? Is it hot as hell up there? It is not. It was sweltering.
It was Africa hot last week.
It has actually cooled off a touch.
It's about 81, 82.
It's a little bit humid, but it is nothing to complain about.
And as everybody knows, and all the beat reporters should remind you of this, it's still a little
bit of an extension of what they call phase three.
So these guys aren't going full contact and full pads till the beginning of next week.
So that caveat should attach itself
to every camp observation.
Okay, so we're feeling the beat.
We are feeling the beat.
You made quite some noise yesterday
with a tweet saying,
you know, I'm nearing,
I don't give a fuck territory
on who's calling plays.
But then you chat about Matt Patricia,
his role, Joe Judge, his role,
Bill Belichick, his role,
and what Matt Jones has done. How do you see that panning out? Dan Orlovsky said this is his number
one fear going into the NFL season. Who's in Mac Jones' ear? You're obviously nearing not caring,
but what have you seen thus far? And are you worried at all about any of this?
I've got to correct on that. I don't give a flip of asking Bill because it's a constant shell game in asking him,
hey, what are you doing?
Who's the coordinator?
And the next thing you know, we've gotten into why does it matter to you guys,
which, of course, it matters.
Bill, every detail matters to you.
We're covering your team.
It matters to us.
It matters because if it were Nick Caley, for instance,
following a normal offensive coordinator track and was the unnamed offensive coordinator, it would make less difference.
What we have in Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, as they negotiate which guy is going to be the main person in Max here, and both are going to be there,
you have two guys who are failed head coaches who have never been full-time devoted offensive coaches or play callers.
And that's germane to the conversation
because the guy is a very good player and if dan olavsky points out rightly it matters this team
is going to be good going forward with that then it has to have matt jones in the best position to
succeed a good quarterback on a rookie contract is the most important thing in sports the patriots
got it don't piss away a year yeah and also because you can spend money everywhere,
but if Mac Jones sees
these guys get early
deals and have success,
Mac Jones played hardball with Bill Pelichick.
I'm sure that'll happen.
He's been there all... Yeah, go ahead.
He's a Condon. He's a
Tommy Condon. You remember Tom Condon when he was
Indianapolis-based guy, or Kansas-based,
whatever, that doesn't matter, but Tom Condon when he was, you know, Indianapolis-based guy or Kansas-based, whatever, that doesn't matter.
But Tom Condon was a longtime rival of Bill Belichick's as an agent
because Belichick always liked to try and win every negotiation,
and Tom Condon didn't want Belichick.
They finally stopped dealing with each other.
Well, Matt Jones is represented by Tommy Condon, Tom Condon's son.
Wow.
So you watch a Kyler Murray contract come down the pike,
and you say, well, Kyler Murray's the first overall pick,
and he's got these wonderful skills.
But I don't think we're ever going to see Matt Jones commit a blunder
like Kyler Murray did in the playoff game last year.
So the floor is going to be exceedingly high,
and that's where the Patriots will be stuck in a few years.
Is he a $250 million quarterback, or do they try and say,
well, you're a widget.
We could just find anybody to do what you do.
Okay, I don't think that's going to happen.
Obviously, the grass isn't always greener,
even though you have Bill Belichick.
Mac Jones, all offseason, has stayed in Foxborough.
He's allegedly in much better shape.
Is that obvious?
And do you see a different aura around Mac this year
as opposed to last year?
Just huge comfort level, Pat.
He comes in.
He doesn't have to compete with Cam Newton.
He understands what the practice field is, what they expect,
the tempo of the practices.
He is at a much better spot.
He does look more slimmed down.
He was a little bit bottle-shaped last year.
Not as much bottle-shaped.
We're more V there.
So it's what you're looking for.
You know, the Mac Jones calendar will be out,
and I'm sure that we'll all get a copy.
Okay.
I hope you send us one of those,
and hopefully he wears the same shorts you're wearing and
the same photo, you know, that'll really get the boys going.
You look great, Tom.
By the way, you look, hey, you look great, Tom.
Mac Jones ran a 4.6 when he was in your version of body shaming, whatever before.
You think, are they going to have him moving at all or is this just throwing all the time?
They do.
And that's what I'm fascinated to find out.
We've seen them
run a lot more stretch stuff in the running game which if they are going to pare down the offense
the way guys like kendrick one the receiver has indicated if they're going to do that if they're
going to pare it down in any direction pat they're going to pare it down i think and make it simpler
towards perhaps the san francisco offense which is the Shanahan offense, which is the Mike Shanahan offense, which is the John Elway offense,
which involves all that bootleg and rollout stuff and guys running grass.
So if you're going to do that, that means Matt Jones has to be out and on the run,
and I do think he can do it.
Yeah, they were talking about him not being an athlete at all,
I think just because he had that baby face.
In Sarkisian's offense, he just sat there and just picked apart the defense,
but then he made that jumping catch in his pro day.
That's right.
And he was able to move.
4'6 is a good 40 for anybody, let alone a quarterback that has lost a bunch of weight.
Go ahead, Connor, your question for your uncle, Tom E. Curran.
Yeah, Uncle Tom, I don't think that there are many concerns on the offensive side of the ball
for New England fans, but, I mean, on defense, we lost J.C. Jackson,
and all reports out of campus, the offense is just absolutely toasting them.
Is there a worry that this defense isn't going to be one of Belichick's
greater ones, or what do you think there?
This is why I feel the beat makes so much difference to your listeners right now
because the defense kicked the absolute shit out of the offense
just 45 minutes ago.
It was hysterical.
It's the second day of practice, and we have to attach all the caveats.
But the offense was 0 for 10 in the red zone trying to get in on that defense.
Yeah, we should have questions about it.
0 for 10 in the passing game.
No completions until they've got a chief in Hunter Henry.
I've got to have it at the end of the period.
But you're right.
It should be the area that has more questions because J.C. Jackson's gone elsewhere.
You have Terrence Mitchell's going to be the corner on the other side.
Most people are going to say, I don't really know who that is.
That's okay.
And then they fumigated their linebacker room.
So no Jamie Collins, no Dante Hightower, no Kyle Vannoy.
That's completely redone.
So it does really bring up the question of what exactly are the Patriots
looking at on defense, especially when they were so inept against the Bills in the last two meetings.
Well, I think you have one of the greatest defensive coordinator calls
in the history of defense in the NFL, defense coordinator on the offensive side.
You have Bill Belichick, one of the most notorious defensive studs
in the history of the NFL, greatest coach, greatest GM of all time.
He's on the offensive side.
Are you guys just about to get run out of buildings?
What is going on, Tommy?
Are you guys about to get run out of buildings, dude?
The bloodline is strong.
Is Connor there?
He's got to be concerned about this conversation.
You hear what I'm saying?
I'm saying the truth.
I do.
Yeah, I hear what you're saying, but, you know,
we got Gerard Mayo who is in charge of being a head coach.
I love the yelps.
He always does the yelps.
And we just talked about what you said with Bill Belichick,
one of the greatest defensive minds in NFL history.
Guess who's on the defensive side?
His own blood, his son, will be calling play.
Oh, yeah, that's always how it goes.
I'm not worried at all.
Hey, Tom, we appreciate you.
You're the first ever guest to feel the beat,
and I don't think we could have gone any better than this, pal.
Feel the beat.
That's a Robert Palmer.
You can look it up and you'll listen to it.
Some like it hard.
Okay, bye, fellas.
See you.
Tommy!
Tommy Curran is an absolute wild animal, that guy.
How long has he been covering the Patriots?
Everybody knows him up in New England?
Yeah, everyone knows Tommy.
I believe it is actually like 28, 29 years.
It's been a very long time.
He's been there through some bad days, some great days.
Now he's on the other side in the Mac Jones era,
and I think he's just wondering,
it seems like all the brain power is going to the offensive side.
Who's looking at the defense?
Well, it's an offensive-driven league, you know.
You need to score points.
What if Bill Belichick and Saban, right?
Saban came out.
He was sitting there, all was like, all right.
Like, he did that whole – I used to think you run the ball.
Play good defense.
Play good defense.
Control field position.
You win games.
Like, that is how – it ain't like that, all right?
That's like how he literally spoke at his computer.
We've all seen him.
He's in his basement sitting on that office chair.
Yep.
And he talked about how the game ain't like that anymore.
The game is fast.
You've got to score.
You've got to do all that.
Is that what Bill Belichick is thinking?
Like, all right, I've focused on defense my entire career.
I'm the greatest defensive mastermind in the history of the NFL.
I'm the greatest coach in the history of the NFL.
I'm the greatest GM in the history of the NFL.
I've been able to ride the wave and evolve over time like everybody else. The game
is now a high-speed, fast game.
Our defense is going to be good. Let's not
ever think that our defense isn't going to be good, but
also, they're going to get got.
We need to get ours more than we get got
though. That is what the NFL is.
This is another
segment of Feel
the Beat!
Let's hop on the Feel the Beat, Bird.
Let's go down to Tampa Bay.
Ladies and gentlemen, joining us,
beat reporter for the Buccaneers
for a long, long time, Rick Stride.
Mr. Stride, how you doing?
What's up, Pat?
I'm doing well.
How are you?
Great.
Thank you for taking time out of your day
to chit-chat with us.
Obviously, a very busy morning there in Tampa Bay.
Julio Jones and Tom Brady look fantastic, but that is not the main story.
Main story, Ryan Jensen goes down.
Sounded bad.
Todd Bowles said it's a knee injury.
What are your early expectations from being boots on the ground, Rick Stratt?
It doesn't look or sound good.
You know it's serious when not only do they bring the golf cart off,
you know, for the left knee injury, but then the entire team,
not just the offensive lineman, walks up to console Ryan Jensen.
So they say it's going to be a couple days, you know,
before they know MRIs and swelling and things like this.
But the initial look and feel and just the somber tone of everything
doesn't sound great.
And he's been a very durable player.
He started 81 games, I think, in his career since he became a starter.
Really hasn't missed much time.
He's played 97% of the snaps here.
So when you consider, Pat, that this was the first guy the Bucs signed after Tom Brady
decided to un-retire, that's not a coincidence.
Tom Brady, you know, it's very important to him who snaps the ball.
And right now it's not Ryan Jensen.
Okay, so obviously we're all fucking bummed to hear that in training camp.
That is what, I mean, the NFL has that.
The NFL has that.
You just got to hope it's not for you.
He's like leader too, big-time leader, not only in the locker room,
but the city loves Ryan Jensen, right?
He's beloved by everybody.
He really is. And he's one of the characters of the game.
You know, you see the flaming red hair, and he pushes guys over the pile,
and he'll get a penalty or two, but really a colorful guy that, you know,
is a make-it story in the NFL, you know, drafted very low out of Pueblo,
and so everybody loves Ryanyan jensen and the fact
that they re-signed him to a three-year deal at 31 years old tells you how much they're counting
on him to play in what is you know maybe tom brady's last dance here in tampa bob hainsey now
out of notre dame is the backup center he is i mean obviously we're hoping that it's not as serious
as it sounded and look for ryan jensen but i think brains will assume that this is going to be a bit for Ryan Jensen
before he comes back.
Bob Hainsey now, it is his job.
Tristan Wirfs, very confident, comfortable.
We know from following along with our friend A.Q. Shipley,
he's been training in Phoenix all offseason with A.Q.
He might be, you know, he might be more ready than he's ever been to do this,
even though he never could have expected or wanted this role.
How has the team responded?
Have you got any words about Bob Hainsey from any of the players or coaches
on what they expect from him going forward?
Yeah, we were talking to Tristan Wirbs,
and Hainsey has really worked hard in the offseason.
He's added some weight.
You know, they were trying to put him in the left guard mix
with guys like Aaron Stinney and Luke Godeke.
So now, of course, he steps into the center position.
It's a big responsibility.
He just hasn't played there.
And so, you know, you have an unknown commodity.
But they like the way he's developed.
And he's going to get the first bite of the apple.
I mean, he's going to get a chance to go out there and prove what he can do.
But, you know, they're not in pads until Monday.
This is unfortunate. It was supposed to be a non to go out there and prove what he can do. But, you know, they're not in pads until Monday. This is unfortunate.
It was supposed to be a non-contact drill.
Aaron Stinney looked like he pushed Logan Hall on an inside rush into Jensen,
and it's just one of those things that shouldn't happen this time of year.
Who pushed the person?
Is that a starter?
Yeah, I think it was Aaron Stinney, if I'm not mistaken, yeah.
Oh, can't have it.
That's a veteran team, too.
That shit does – yeah, you don't expect that at all.
Man, what a bummer.
Let's move on.
Julio Jones, Kyle Rudolph, two more vets called in to Tampa Bay.
Julio looked explosive, didn't he?
Didn't he look explosive?
He looked all the way back.
Last year there was all these conversations.
He's injured.
He didn't like the team.
He didn't want to practice.
He wasn't getting involved.
He's gone down to Tampa
His interviews have sounded like
Him and Tom on the same exact page
He doesn't want to step on any toes
And he looked good in those drills
Is that what everybody's thinking down there?
Vibes are very high about Julio being Julio again?
Yeah, Pat, he was outstanding today
And he showed that athleticism
You know, they threw some fade routes
He was lost, you guys
He stinks in football And he doesn't know the
playbook i mean this is the thing he knows what a hit is he knows what a fade is he knows what a
you know what the routes are but he really doesn't know the offense and just in the red zone alone
when you add a guy like julio jones to a to a mike evans and a chris godwin and you know maybe a kyle
rudolph or a cam brate um it's going to be very difficult for those defenses to try to double up on anybody.
So, you know, listen, I think they'll have him on a pitch count.
I think they're going to be very careful with him in terms of his workload, get him to the
regular season, get him through the season.
But, man, what an addition to, you know, it's as Tristan Wirth said, he goes, you know,
every day it's like you're playing a video game down here.
You know, who's the next superstar that's going to show up in the locker room?
And that's kind of the way it's been here for a while.
It's crazy.
He's picked up Canton and moved that right down here to Tampa.
Won a Super Bowl.
Season ticket sales through the roof.
There's cranes everywhere.
And we got Tom back for another year.
Life is good down in Tampa.
Aside from the gents, that's fucking sad.
But it feels like all other things are clicking on all cylinders go ahead tone dicks and you kind of
answered there what julio's role going to be but with adding him and russell gauge to an already
very very deep wide receiver room uh is is our friend scotty miller going to be the odd man out
down there you think scooter scooter's confident man he uh he's not he's going to go down with a
fight and i think he'll end up in the nfl if it's not here he's going to. He's going to go down with a fight, and I think he'll end up in the NFL if it's not here.
He's going to have to do some things on special teams.
That return game is up for grab with Jalen Darden and that.
But he's not backing down.
He had the turf toe injury last year, and when he came back,
guys like Brashard Perrim and Sauer Grayson stepped up.
This is a battle royal at receiver down here.
But it's July 28th.
We saw today injuries happen, so I wouldn't count
Scotty Miller out just yet. We're talking to Rick Stroud
here in our new segment, Feel the Beat.
Be right here for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
How long have you been covering Bucs?
Oh, you know,
Pat, I started when I was 16,
way back in like 1990, man.
Tommy Curran with the Patriots.
Now we got 32 years here covering the Bucs.
We appreciate you taking time.
Last question from me.
Todd Bowles, now the head coach.
Bruce is a consultant.
Has Bruce been around?
And have you gotten any differences
with Todd Bowles' lead team
as opposed to B.A.'s lead team,
even though it's a lot of the same parts?
B.A.'s doing what he always did.
He's driving around in his golf cart.
He's following the script.
He's getting out talking to Tom Brady and Byron Lefkowitz and doing a little
coaching on the side.
So he hasn't changed at all, and he's an extra pair of eyes and one that they
like.
I think the difference with Bowles is you've got a little more competitive
camp.
It's one practice field, not two.
You know, Bruce liked to put the young guys on one field and run kind of the
same practice over there.
And I think you see a lot more one-on-one, good-on-good, as they say,
the number one against the number one defense and offense.
It's been a more competitive camp.
It's only two days.
Maybe they have to dial that back after today's injury.
But I really think that you're going to see a lot more, even more accountability maybe
for what they do in practice and preparing under Todd Bowles.
Last question for me.
It just came up, and then Connor has one, and we'll let you go.
And we can't thank you enough, Rick Stroud.
Been covering the Bucs for 32 years, taking time here on field.
The beat.
Tom Brady retiring after this year.
What's your guys' consensus?
The local media that have been around him.
He wants to go.
Last year didn't end how we thought it was or didn't want it to.
Obviously, he has that $375 million sitting on the other side.
Congrats on that, Tom.
You need it, obviously.
Do you think, is the thought this is it,
or you guys haven't even broached that subject?
I think the thought is this is it in Tampa.
You know, he could have signed an extension here.
He chose not to i think
he wants to keep his options open be a free agent the way he was in new england he didn't have that
option this past off season so any designs he had on miami or some other place you know it was going
to have to involve some kind of compensation here but the difference is as you mentioned pat i mean
he now has a place to go if he wants to go there, right? Fox is going to hold that job for him until he retires 37 and a half mil. That's not a bad thing to do on the weekend. So I think
that's the difference, right? But it all depends. You know, the greatest players don't know when to
put the keys on the table, right? They keep staying, but this guy can absolutely still spin
it. He's one of the best quarterbacks in the league still. So why would you quit, right?
Arm looking good. yeah, still?
Fantastic.
It's unbelievable.
I don't know what he does, but a lot of credit to Alex Guerrero
or whatever they're doing over there.
It's certainly working for him.
Avocado ice cream too, Rick.
Last question here from Connor.
Yeah, Rick, why are people saying Leonard Fournette's 1,000 pounds
and how has he been looking at games?
That's you, by the way, Rick.
That's you.
That's you guys.
All right, let me set the record straight.
We wrote about it seven weeks ago, and at the way, Rick. That's you. That's you guys. Let me set the record straight. We wrote about it seven weeks ago
and at the time, Leonard Fournette
said he was 240-something.
I asked the coach if it was closer to 250-something
and he said more.
That was seven weeks ago. I haven't written about it
since. Then in the dead week
of the NFL, right around July 4th
of the week after, I was on my podcast
and somebody asked a question about the running back position
and I retold the story how
he looked like he was about a donut shy
of 260. So it is your fault.
So it is your fault. That is you.
It went viral, right? SI.com
everybody, you know you had Skip
and Shannon Sharp calling him Leonard
Baguette. I mean it went crazy.
Leonard fortunately has a good sense of humor
about it. He sent me an IM.
We're fine. He just
wanted to know why I was posting, which I
wasn't, but social media gets all
of us, Pat, sooner or later. All right. Well, you keep
getting those IMs and keep saying on a positive
side, Rick. We appreciate the hell out of your work.
Stop. Say, stop body shaming.
Come on. All right. Have a good one.
Thank you so much, Rick, and please keep
us updated on everything happening down there.
Rick Stroud.
Thanks, Rick.
32 years he's been covering the Bucs.
Tommy Curran, 29 years.
That's what Feel the Beat is, by the way.
Exactly.
We're going right into, hey, who's been there the longest?
We'd like some information.
We'd like a little chit-chat.
Let's continue to hop back on to the Feel the Beat.
Play. Let's continue to hop back on to the feel the beat.
Play.
There it is.
We got it.
Thank you, man.
Joining us now, beat writer from the athletic.
Yeah.
Yeah, from the athletic.
Jeez.
He's been a long time.
Very established for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ladies and gentlemen, Mark Cavola. Yay, Mark!
Hey, Mark. How you doing, Paul?
Oh, I'm doing great, Pat.
You know, not far from your hometown here.
About 30 miles up the road.
So, you know how it is.
Middle of July. A little
sweaty under the armpits right about now.
But, hey, you got to deal with it. Hey, Steelers
football is back, though, Mark. Let's go.
This is good news.
We saw the line of cars parked outside of day one.
People ready to get in there and see guys running around in shirts
and in jerseys without pads, without any contact.
What is the buzz around this team?
First year, 18 years, basically, with no starting quarterback,
no franchise quarterback, little bit of turnover.
What's the buzz up there with the fans and the team, Mark?
Everybody wants to see who's taking the snaps at quarterback.
We're out there charting them on a daily basis.
Now, I know it's only one practice, and it was only a 90-minute practice
because, you know, they were wearing those great Gazoo helmets
and had to feed the easier way in.
But it was pretty much even day one.
It's Trubisky, Pickett, Rudolph, and may the best man win.
And I'm not quite sure if Mason Rudolph is going to get a legit opportunity,
but at least day one it was pretty even in the name of snap counts,
and that's all we're doing here week one, snap counts.
I know a lot of people and a lot of yinzers are certainly bummed to hear that
about Mason Rudolph, maybe not.
I hate it.
Not getting into it as much.
What, you like Mason?
I think Mason hasn't gotten much of an opportunity.
When I say opportunity, I don't mean the field.
I agree.
Thank you.
This is where I'm saying that.
Hear me out here.
Hear me out here.
He got bonked in the head with his own helmet.
He got bonked in the head with his own helmet.
They brought him as a third-round pick, put a first-round grade on him,
and all of a sudden they promote their quarterback coach.
He doesn't have a quarterback coach in two years.
So you don't do that.
All of a sudden he's a first-round guy.
He gets no reps during practice the first year.
Ben blows out his elbow.
They said, Mason, take us home.
How do you expect that guy to do?
What do you want Mason to do, Tone?
Would you like to speak for yourself?
Mark knows I'm a big Mason supporter.
He knows it.
He's seen it.
No, no.
This guy hates it, and I don't know if he speaks for all Yinzers,
but I don't know what the vibe is.
Feels like he is, in your words, not given much of an opportunity thus far.
It's going to happen again.
You spend your 20th pick on a a guy and then you bring in a vent and pay him eight mil over two years those two are probably going to get a lion's share of the opportunity whenever you look at him
is the is it kind of just understood and i think this is me outside looking in but understanding
you know potential stealer football the the common sense thought would be Mitchell Trubisky starting
and then at some point Kenny Pickett's going to come in right is that just understood or is there
a chance Kenny Pickett started day one in your mind and in the conversation around local reporters
up there uh not in my mind I don't think Kenny Pickett has much chance of starting day one
don't ask Mike Tomlin because he's probably going all the way down to the fourth stringer
and thinks he has a shot here just to play it that way.
But, I mean, you're right.
I mean, you've got a free agent quarterback you brought in
and has some experience, some success.
And you've got the 20th overall pick.
Who's going to get the most opportunities here?
Those two guys.
Mason's not going to be around next year.
Only way Mason Rudolph gets a legit opportunity,
a lot of bad things are going to have to happen for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I mean, Mitch Trubisky's going to have to get hurt.
Kenny Pickett's going to have to prove that he cannot jump in there
and start week one.
Then Mason Rudolph will get a chance.
But it's Pickett, Trubisky.
At this point, it's going to be hard, in my opinion, for Pickett to overtake trubisky and at this point it's going to be hard in my opinion for pickett to uh
overtake trubisky he's going to have to have an absolute stunning training camp to do that now
history says eventually those first round picks get in there week one or or year one so i wouldn't
totally right pick it off for the entire year but i can't see a way that
trubisky is not starting the season in cincinnati i think bye week i think bye week is nine so that's
like almost you you think to yourself okay for the rookie quarterback where's the bye week at
for him to potentially come in afterwards right this happened with tua down in miami it's happened
in a lot of places it's week nine but the games that follow by if not fucking that is not where
you would want to start a,
a rookie at.
I don't think Kenny Pickett looks like he got it though.
You think like early thoughts about how he handles himself,
the way he does interviews.
Yeah.
Handle himself.
I think he's great throwing the ball so far.
Hasn't been so great,
but it's just,
you're there.
We're not looking good.
What's going on? Well, you know, it was the beat. You're there. We're not. It's not looking good. What's going on?
Well, you know, it was the first day of practice yesterday, so it wasn't my best.
Jeez.
Mason Rudolph. Once again, we're doing walk-through type stuff underneath type throws,
and he was off a little bit through an interception to end practice.
But once again, it's one day.
But you add that to what we saw in the spring,
and you saw him taking all third team reps i mean how is he possibly going to get ready in three weeks or 15 days to play a game
three weeks or a month to start this season it's it's he's in a bad situation to start the season
but he's going to play he'll play this year if we just don't know when and i don't know pat think
about it the steelers got 11 three games in the first 11 days.
So that could be a jumping off point going in from the Cleveland Thursday
night game to week four too.
Ah, so you're predicting maybe week four there.
Oh, wow.
Maybe week five.
Because two games before the bye, I think, are gettable, right?
Who are they?
It's Dolphins and Eagles, I think?
And then Saints-Bengals after. Dolphins- Eagles. Yeah. And then he's Dolphins, Eagles by Saints, Bengals.
And then after the Steelers schedule sucks.
It is not a, that's not an easy, it's a murderer's row out there.
Tone digs.
Sounds like it's gloom and doom and same things.
No, we'll see.
We'll see.
Mark on a brighter note.
I don't know.
On a brighter note, Deontay Johnson seems like he's holding in.
Oh, that's brighter.
He's not even practicing.
Sarcasm.
Does it feel like it doesn't seem like a deal is going to get done?
Is he going to play this year?
What's the situation with Deontay?
Well, he has no choice to play.
He has no leverage whatsoever.
I mean, a fourth-year guy going into his final year of his contract,
he's going to have to go out there and put up pretty good numbers
if he wants to get, you know, Devontae Adams numbers
or, you know, anywhere in the plus-20 range.
So, I don't know.
He did the same thing during OTAs.
He skipped the first week.
It almost looked like he skipped the first week just to make a point.
Then he practiced the rest of the way.
He missed game or practice one here yesterday. Looked like he skipped the first week just to make a point. Then he practiced the rest of the way.
He missed game or practice one here yesterday.
We haven't went out there for practice yet today.
I don't know if it's a hold in, if it was just a statement number one.
But he's going to have to get on the field sooner or later because, I mean,
he needs this season to be able to make the money that he wants.
Are the Steelers going to give it to him?
I don't think so. I think it's going to be all up to Deontay Johnson, to be honest with you. money that he wants. Are the Steelers going to give it to him? I don't think so.
I think it's going to be all up to Deontay Johnson, to be honest with you.
Let me correct myself there.
I think the Steelers will put a number on the table, probably not what Deontay wants.
And if Deontay feels the need that he needs to take it, it will get done.
If not, the Steelers aren't going to move off that number,
whatever that number is.
And surely it's not more than $20 million a year.
So it's a tough situation for Johnson here here to hold out he needs to play to show his worth next year so interesting yeah
it definitely is interesting and also a new quarterback you know so i understand why deontay
johnson's like hey i'd like my money now because we have no fuck you're what he's saying about
kenny yeah and amazing we have no idea what this year is going to look like.
Let's go ahead and get our money now before what could potentially happen
with Canada's offense.
Last question here.
What do you think realistic expectations are for the Steelers around?
Like, what do you think expectations are?
Bengals obviously coming back off a Super Bowl.
The Browns have no idea when their quarterback is going to play.
The Ravens, Lamar is looking for a bag, so you can assume they're good.
The AFC North is always a problem.
What are some realistic expectations, you think, for this team, Mark?
Well, since Mike Tomlin never had a losing record, I'm going 8-8-1.
Oh, a tie.
Here we go.
8-8-1, right?
Does that sound about right?
Maybe sneak in there a little bit.
I don't know.
If they play like they did in 2019 when Duck and Mason were the quarterback and rely heavily on the defense,
they have an outside shot.
They have to get Najee and they've got that interior of the offensive line new.
They need to be able to run the ball a little bit.
It's an uphill battle, though.
I mean, you mentioned the division's tough
and they have to play in Buffalo as well,
and they've got to play some pretty decent teams.
So I'm just going to stock answer 8-8-1 because Mike Tomlin never had a losing record.
Hey, Mark, we appreciate you so much for joining us.
Obviously, we've seen your work for a long time.
Nice to finally get to chat with you.
Thank you for making time for us today.
All right. Thanks, guys.
Hey, will you ever hear Rudy's subs?
Rudy's?
All right. Fuck off, Mark.
I thought they closed them all, didn't they?
Mark, never have me back
How about that Mark, you can't do it
I believe they closed the one near where I grew up
Oh you know what, I think I had one once up somewhere in Forest Hills
They have one in Forest Hills?
Hey that's where my old man's from, Forest Hills
You in that area?
My brother lives there, so I'm always around that area at times
I think there's a Rudy's
Right on the Ardmore
Where are you from Mark? Where are you from Mark? so I'm always around that area at times. I think there's a race. Right on the Ardmore. Oh, Donner.
Where are you from, Mark?
Where are you from, Mark?
Well, I'm from Belle Vernon, and I live in Portview.
Me and Jesse James were neighbors at some point.
You're the man.
We appreciate you so much.
Keep up the great work, sir.
All right, see you guys.
Laser and Mark, boy.
Yeah, Mark.
Hey, feel the beat is lucky. Yeah, let's go. alright see you guys Deontay's eight. Sorry, Bobby. The old joke around the city is like you mention all those things,
but then at the end of the sentence, the guy goes,
gotta like their chances though, right?
Steelers though.
Steelers though.
88-1.
He's never lost.
He's never losing season.
Fucking love, Mark.
Thank you for joining us.
That is hour one on radio.
We'll be back in ten minutes for hour two,
and I'm sure more segments.
Got it in.
Perfect. Yep. That it in. Perfect.
Yep.
That was awesome.
Let's continue.
We got another.
Yeah.
We're feeling the beat.
We're still feeling the beat.
Are you feeling the beat right now?
We're feeling it all over the NFL.
It's the NFL season.
Let's keep doing it.
Let's feel the beat.
Let's feel the beat. Let's feel the beat, let's feel the beat, let's feel the beat, let's feel the beat.
Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen, we are feeling the beat.
Bouncing around to beat reporters and beat writers around training camps,
boots on the ground.
Joining us now, ladies and gentlemen, Sheena Quay.
Yeah, Sheena!
Carolina Panthers beat reporter, but I actually broke some news this morning about Deebo Samuel's deal almost done. Hey, you're plugged in, Sheena Quinn. Yeah, Sheena! Carolina Panthers beat reporter, but I actually broke some news this morning
about Deebo Samuel's deal almost done.
Hey, you're plugged in, Sheena, huh?
I'm a little plugged in, Pat.
How close are we to that Deebo Samuel deal before we get to the Carolina
Panthers training camp that you're at right now?
I'm hearing it can be done by the end of the weekend,
but that could also be a little bit of gamesmanship with DK Metcalf.
You guys know that they're both kind of similar weekend, but that could also be a little bit of gamesmanship with DK Metcalf. You guys know that they're both kind of
similar situations, both
second rounders, both really important
to their teams, but I'm hearing
as soon as possibly the end of the weekend.
Okay, Sheena, thank you for that information.
Hey, she's Carolina Panthers
beat reporter, by the way.
Other side of the fucking country.
I got a little bit of insight. We appreciate
you, Sheena. Let's talk about the Carolina Panthers.
A lot of conversation.
It feels like with the new ownership, he was now the second richest owner in the NFL.
It's like, hey, we are going to find a winner here.
And if we don't, we are going to move on.
Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, obviously all eyes on them.
Who's going to be the starting quarterback?
There's a lot of Baker chants.
Sam has to deal with it.
Does it look like they're getting along?
Because on the internet, it looks like they're getting along.
But could you see that becoming something maybe with the environment down there at training camp?
I don't.
And if there is, we'll never see it.
We'll never know because, you know, Sam's very stoic.
He's very pros pro.
You know, Baker might get a little chatty.
You know, he tends to do that.
But I do think that some of the things that happened this
offseason have humbled Baker a little bit. So he might just be boots to the ground. I've got to
win this starting job. Both of them know is very, very imperative for their futures. I think that
whoever loses out becomes a career backup. Okay. Matt Rule saying that it's an open competition
and are they both going to get legit shots at this or who do you think is favored early?
Matt Rule is saying that both are going to get legit shots at this or who do you think is favored early um he's saying matt rule is saying that both are going to get legitimate shots sam took all of the team one snaps yesterday first team snaps yesterday uh baker took all the first team
snaps today and you know politically it's open but to me i think baker's your starter oh wow
put it on the ticker put it on the ticker we Put it on the ticker. Put it on the ticker.
Okay, okay.
Here we go.
Talking to Sheena Quick, beat reporter for the Carolina Panthers,
joining us in the Feel the Beat segment.
Hey, this is the first time we've done this segment.
I think we need to do it more often.
Thank you for joining.
I'm the first.
You're part of the first.
Part of, yeah.
Part of the first.
I'll take that.
I'll take that.
We did DM you, though, before everybody else.
And then whenever you didn't get back to us until we were live on air,
big celebration behind the glass.
Sheena got back to us.
Ty, your question?
Sheena, obviously there's probably a lot of excitement with Baker
and a new quarterback,
but do you get the sense that kind of everyone down there knows that this is
kind of like the put up or shut up here?
Like even with like maybe Christian McCaffrey, Matt Rule,
both of the quarterbacks?
Is there kind of a sense where if they don't have success this year,
then David Tepper's going to blow everything up?
Oh, for sure.
I don't think he shifts CMC off necessarily,
but I do think that time is of the essence for Matt Rule,
which is why they were still looking to add a vet even after drafting Matt Corral.
I was a little shocked that they took a rookie,
because there is so much hinging on it.
Matt Rule needs to win right now.
It's not like he can draft a rookie and have time to develop him
and take time.
Not with Sam Darnold at the helm.
He needs to win right away.
You've seen what Sam has.
You've seen what Baker has.
And when each of them are at their best, Baker's the better quarterback.
And they can win, by the way.
And they can win.
They can win.
Expectation? NFC South obviously a problem. And they can win. They can win. Expectation?
NFC South, obviously a problem.
I know the owner is expecting to win right now.
What is expectations?
Everybody's like, hey, we can go if we got it?
Everybody thinks they can go if they've got it.
But the Panthers have looked really, really good on paper before.
It's actually putting those results on the field.
So we'll see.
I think that this is the more complete team that they've had in a couple of years
because you'll see the offense be, you know, efficient than the defense is,
or than the special team goes to sleep.
So I think this is the most complete squad they've had in a while.
Connor, your question for Sheena?
Yeah, Sheena, when the rumors started floating around about Baker going to Carolina,
Robbie Anderson tweeted about possibly retiring.
Do you know if they kind of squashed that beef,
or is everyone kind of on the same page now that Baker's officially there?
And was that all bullshit?
Yeah.
Oh, the retirement was definitely bullshit.
But see, Robbie tweets a lot.
And sometimes it's nothing more than song lyrics,
and everybody's like, oh, my God, what's going on?
I'm like, just chill.
That's a little Kodak lyric.
But yeah, it'll be like a little Kodak lyric,
and it'll just be a random Tuesday.
What's Robbie thinking? Isbie going to shoot somebody i'm like gosh chill chill that's just a little
baby that's just a little baby but i think that now that he's on the squad um you have to squash
the beef because everybody wants to win like when you have back-to-back five win seasons and
like robbie signed the the big um contract a couple years ago people are like okay
let's see what you can do earn that money so once you're on the team I don't think there's any room
for any beef not on the squad like the Panthers they need to win all right well Sheena we just
won because you got back to us thank you so much for joining us hopefully we'll get to talk to you
soon thanks for having me guys ladies and gentlemen Sheena Quick
let's ride into this hour too I don't know if it's going to top what happened in the first guys. Ladies and gentlemen, Sheena Quinn. Yeah, Sheena!
Let's ride.
Let's ride into this hour, too.
I don't know if it's
going to top what
happened in the first
hour.
No way.
Doubt it.
We were a fucking
real sports show in
the first hour, and
we will talk about it
for the next four
days, probably.
Have to.
Talk to the tables
here at Ty Schmidt
at Boston Corner.
One half of the
Hammer Cowboys
Tone Diggs is here.
And joining us now
from Attic in Ohio,
a man who's a college football national champion champion Super Bowl champion, Ryder Cup champion
COVID survivor, ladies and gentlemen
AJ
AJ, how you doing, Paul?
I'm good, how you doing? Is AQ on right now?
You came to me pretty quick
Nah, AQ's on in 20 minutes
I wanted to get to you this quick strictly because
Did you see what the fuck we just did as a show
In that last hour, AJ?
I got excited when I heard That tom e kern was coming on because i always love to hear what tom has to
say about about con man's patriots but then i saw uh who was just on she was great uh that's sheena
quick she's a beat reporter for the panther she was yeah she was unbelievable this was cool honestly
that's a legit like segment that actually is cool and very informative. We knocked out two.
We know.
We knocked out two.
We knocked out four teams.
We knocked out.
And obviously, we all know that that was thought about for weeks and weeks.
And there was focus groups.
And all four of them were certainly booked before this show went live.
Today was the day.
Today we said, you know what?
Thursday, July 28th, we need to debut this segment.
We've been pounding the pavement on
that's right for years and years and years today was the day and it came to fruition now
actual behind the curtain uh that segment was created at like 11 20 eastern that's 40 minutes
before we go live we had zero guests booked at that point for the entire show sent out a couple
hail marys put the thing together oh yeah what a beat beat what do we do what's about ride the beef and i think bruce was like feel the beat
right it's like yeah feel the beat zito need a fucking we need a graphic for an intro that thing
came to be in about 30 minutes maybe the greatest thing we've ever done aj maybe the greatest thing
we've ever done it's awesome i mean i sure learned a lot and also it gives like i think it puts a
spotlight on these beat writers too who who followed the team every day.
They know them better than anybody.
How about Mark Cabal again?
I mean,
most likely situation is Deontay is going to want something.
Steelers are going to give him a number.
They're never going to go to Deontay's number.
He's either going to take it or he's not,
you know,
that's it.
Yeah.
It's such a real take about it.
One of the holdings around the NFL agent,
we have a graphic about this.
You know,
the old school move was a holdout. The new CBA basically made holdouts impossible. The NFL
certainly wanted to get rid of that because PR-wise, it was bad. Leverage-wise, it was bad
for teams. They wanted to make it impossible for guys to not show up to work at training camp
because of a contract dispute. So what became immediately afterwards were hold-ins. Guys would
go to the building and then they wouldn't do shit.
They'd say, hey, listen, I'm coming, I'll watch film.
I am not getting on that field and getting hurt
like Jensen did this morning
before we lock in a long-term deal that I have earned
and what other people are paying.
So here is who is currently holding in around the NFL.
Debo Samuel, Sheena Quick says,
probably by the end of the weekend,
a $70 million guaranteed deal will be happening for Debo Samuel
and the San Francisco 49ers.
Sheena Quick, I don't think any of us knew existed this morning,
has come in and I think really.
Hey, Sheena, welcome.
Hey, we are thankful you have come into our world.
She has information on one of the biggest conversations that have happened.
Keep that graphic up.
She has information on one of the biggest stories happening have happened. Keep that graphic up a bit. She has information on one of the biggest stories
happening in the NFL across the country.
And she sat in a pocket there with us.
And we are a great...
Trading punches.
Absolutely.
Roquan Smith with Chicago.
They're using the PUP as a way to go about doing this.
His contract is still up.
Deontay Johnson.
He, we just talked to Mark Caboy.
Mark Caboy.
Ever in Pittsburgh, beat writer. He talked about it, how the Steelers are going to make an offer. Deontay Johnson, he, we just talked to Mark Caboy, ever in Pittsburgh,
beat writer, he talked about it, how the Steelers are going to make an offer, Deontay's going to want more,
and it's just going to depend upon
whether or not Deontay will take what the Steelers offer him,
or he'll actually just not play this year,
which is impossible, because he has to play to earn the money
that he wants to have, and that's kind of what Mark
Caboy said, boots on the ground, been around the Steelers
a long time. Derwin James, looking to become
the richest safety in NFL history, he has earned that, he said, boots on the ground, been around Steelers a long time. Derwin James looking to become the richest safety in NFL history.
He has earned that.
He has deserved that.
Not a lot of hype and fanfare around Derwin James.
He's an absolute dog for the Chargers.
DK Metcalf up in Seattle.
They don't know if he's still rehabbing a foot surgery that he had
or if he's doing an actual hold-in.
Nonetheless, all five of these guys are in the last year of their contracts.
They're the rookie contracts looking to get paid.
You can't blame them.
The hold-ins are happening in abundance.
A.J. Hawk.
Yeah, the coaches.
I promise you the coaches have no problem with it.
They get it, too.
Like, hey, yeah, Debo, we're getting close to a deal.
We don't want to get you hurt before that happens.
We understand that's what it works.
That's how it happens.
But with DK, he's the one I'm most intrigued by.
How close are they?
Do we have any kind of information on what they're doing with this deal?
You know, I'm trying to put myself back
into watching the clip.
Pete was chewing gum. Pete said, like,
you build around DK Metcalf, right?
I think it was, like,
alluded to heavily.
But is anything leaked, though, from anybody, like,
not from the team, where, hey, they're somewhat
close, or, like, what's happening? Remember, the seahawks keep that shit tight right yeah there's they're there john
schneider john schneider runs the tight ship out there and the owner i think the owner is also like
uh hey we don't have a sister right yeah yeah she doesn't talk to anybody they did report last night
that pete carroll said that they're they're in progress with getting something done with DK,
but I don't know if that's any different from when he said that a couple weeks ago.
And is he holding in right now because of contract,
or is it because of his foot?
You would think that would be clarified a little bit more?
Yeah, probably because of contract. Could be kind of both.
Because he also said, like, hey, I understand it's my time to be the leader
in the face of Seattle, but obviously you can't do that on a rookie contract
with one year left.
Nobody's doing hold-ins if it's like toxic and not happening right i feel like you only kind of
hold in yeah you definitely can't be toxic because you hold in if you have a decent relationship
because you're still going to be sitting in meetings you're still going to be seeing the
trainers and doing everything like you're you're living with them yeah i think you're close you
have to be that's why dionte is interesting Is he just going to hold in for a couple weeks and then just come back?
Maybe he'll take what they offer him.
And Mark Caboy, whose athletic beat report for the Pittsburgh Steelers
has been for a long time, I mean, he announced the death of Rudy Subbs
on his show.
You go to Pittsburgh, you find a fucking Rudy Subbs.
And Mark knows that.
He walked it back.
I think my brother over there in Forest Hills got one.
But you need to get Rudy's is absolutely fantastic.
He basically said Deontay's going to want more than 20
because that's what the wide receiver market is currently calling for.
And I think Deontay has better stats than a lot of the guys getting paid a lot of money
because he was really the only option there for a bit.
When Juju wasn't in or Juju was hurt, it was just Deontay and Ben.
They were five yards out, ten yards out.
Deontay's so fast, so explosive, able to make
plays. So he's expecting that.
Steelers are going to offer, what, $15 million probably?
Probably $15 million? Depends on how much
guaranteed. There was a rumor that last year they did offer
$15 million, or
that was what they were going to offer. There was
never an actual offer or something like that.
That'd be a very team-friendly
deal.
But the Steelers know that they have... They have the leverage.
Yeah, they have all these hold-ins.
The teams have all the leverage.
Yeah.
And basically, any negotiation in the NFL,
the teams have all the leverage.
Now, players can be upset and get traded
and things like that,
but normally during contract disputes,
if the team wants to say,
fuck you they
can they absolutely can and with the way the new CBA is written about you having to be in a building
or it's like 150,000 a day or so I forget what the it's an absurd price if you do any holdouts at all
it has put all the leverage into the team's hands but I think good business says like hey he's
showing up doesn't want to get hurt you guys want to make this right your fans don't want to see this the nfl doesn't want any bad pr either we can get a
deal done of some sort but the team is always going to take advantage of that situation pittsburgh
steelers anybody is going to take advantage of that situation for sure just because that's how
business is done yeah i mean debo is what the most dramatic whole storyline of this offseason as far
as skill positions wanting a new contract and the fact that he's there
makes me think that all these hold-ins
basically aside from Roquan Smith
because we don't know if he's there or not because he's on the pop list
are at least close or
are in negotiation. Hey, but all it takes
is one thing to either not
be given or
not be agreed upon and those
relationships in the middle of business things can
sour quickly.
That can happen.
What if Seattle was trying to sneak
an addendum into DK's deal?
Hey, you got to...
No dye hair.
Who knows what they want him...
No candy.
You cannot dye your hair any colors.
Okay?
Can't do that.
You can't wear the big cross
Barry Bonds earring
because we're worried
it might get ripped out
and you'll miss a plug.
Shorts have to go below kneecaps.
Okay? So, like, let's... And DK...'re worried it might get ripped out. You'll miss a point. Shorts have to go below kneecaps. Okay.
So, like, let's – and fuck this place.
Pete can't chew gum.
Can you still go out there in warm-ups in his little cutoff?
Pete can't chew gum.
Yeah.
Can I show off that I have a nine-pack?
Can I do that?
No.
Okay.
All right.
What if it is something as childish as that?
It could be.
Who knows?
Tony, what were you going to say about Dante?
Spotrek does this cool thing where they take the stats of other guys who have been paid and age and
comparable and they do like a market value
and he's comparable
to DJ Moore, AJ Brown, Mike
Williams, Terry McLaurin is who they have
and the average of that would be
21.5 is what
So they come at 18 million, 19
million. That saves them
They win in that negotiation
and Deontay is probably just going to take that deal, right? million. That saves them. They win in that negotiation.
And Deontay is probably just going to take that deal, right?
If he gets the right amount of guarantee,
he will, probably. How much guarantee
are in those contracts that those guys have?
AJ got 57. They're talking about
Debo getting 70 guarantees.
So if you're getting 19 mil, how many?
50? Terry?
55? 57? Yeah.
What about Roquan?
Are your Bears going to pay Roquan?
Yes.
In a heartbeat.
I don't know.
They put him on PUP.
That feels like the right way to do a holdout, you know?
Oh, yeah, because you can't hold out.
You legit can't really hold out anymore.
That's the game right there.
This is the –
This is a new thing.
This is what you're going to have to do if you have any kind of contract dispute.
But it will be weird.
I guess you'll just – The real toxic disputes will all take place in the offseason
when they don't have to be in the facility.
But then once camp hits, you better be at least somewhat close
so you can come have a hold in.
Now, let's say they're not close, right?
So Roquan's not doing a hold in, right?
He's clearly not.
He's on the PUP list.
I think he's not in the building.
The team had to do that as well.
Like, the team had to extend – like, them putting him on PUP saves him a massive fine
if he's not there.
Massive, massive.
So you would assume they're getting something done somewhat soon then.
They would have to have some sort of business.
You know what I mean?
If they're going to take care of him and say, yeah,
if it's completely egregious and you're like, hey,
you have three years left on your deal,
you need to play another couple years before we extend you,
then they wouldn't put him on that PUP.
They wouldn't help him out.
They're doing him a favor here. I think Pohl said a couple days ago that they're trying everything they wouldn't put him on that PUP. They wouldn't help him out. They're doing him a favor here.
I think a poll said a couple days ago that they're trying everything they can
to keep him in the building.
So I don't know about them putting the publicist showing that like,
oh, we're on your side.
We're trying to take care of this deal.
I assume the PUP was so he didn't have to be in the building every single day.
Yeah, just to avoid the fines and piss him off even more.
Maybe he means I'm doing whatever I can to get him in the building,
meaning get him to sign a contract.
Yeah, I wonder.
Is he in the building or not?
We should find out if Roquan is in the building or not.
If you're on PUP, you're usually there, I thought.
Unless you're getting treatment somewhere else.
There's been guys on my team that have had to go elsewhere.
Yeah, I guess if they go have some special kind of treatment
or special kind of rehab.
So I think PUP, you're allowed to be excused, I think if they go have some special kind of treatment or special kind of rehab, maybe. So I think PUP are allowed to not be in it.
You're allowed to be excused, I think, from the building.
Ian tweeted on two days ago that linebacker Roquan Smith,
not slated to participate, has also reported to training camp.
Okay, so he's in there.
So he maybe is a little bit injured,
and they are going through the entire thing.
So he is officially a hold-in.
He's like one of the only guys they have left,
because Mack and Akeem Hicks are gone. He's probably their best player on defense so he kind of knows that
like hey new entire coaching staff a defensive minded head coach i'm like the middle linebacker
of your defense like how about you pay me and then let's you know go get something hey absolutely a
valid point the name you mentioned in your sentence there reminded me of a sick press
conference moment from training camp zito showed me this and zito is roquan is there yep he's on
the field roquan is currently on the field right now okay so that you would have to think that
that's a good relationship you would just assume that it would be the whole we got to be close yeah
you would assume it would have to be yeah but maybe not maybe maybe guys are just like yeah
you know why i like yeah you know why
i'm here you know why i'm here i'm here so i won't fucking get fined we are nowhere near it i do not
want to be here i don't want to play here my hamstring hurts by the way i think for the next
17 games what's that so tj kind of did a hold in last year as well tj watt where right he would do
the individual drills and then not do team drills and that's what dionte is doing again this year
too is that what all the hold-ins are doing all right well I think a lot of them don't do even that individual
drills you can also get hurt in there too I mean the reason for the hold-in I thought was because
I'm not risking any chance of getting injured before this deal gets done so TJ doing an
individual drill and then kicking his agent out not only is he running the hoop and doing all that
he also had to put his boot up
his agent's ass that could have been a big toe that could have been an ankle let alone all the
individual drills i mean tj was really rolling yeah yeah i happily made it that's because he's
a wild it's also crazy like talking about all these holdings and then thinking about how lamar
jackson's you know he's been there since monday not even like i assume they're having negotiations
but he's doing all these, participating in everything.
Like, that feels like the guy that should be getting paid before the week ends out.
What if he's just, you give me 250, I'm guaranteed all.
He just bet on himself.
Don't you feel like Lamar just has supreme confidence in who he is,
what he can do, what he's still going.
Like, he's probably like, man, they haven't even seen what I can do yet.
Like, I'm only getting better and better as I get older he's probably hey as long as the longer we go the
price tag goes up so he he's absolutely betting on himself it feels like i love that by lamar i
love that move obviously i'm a massive fan of those who bet on themselves they offered him
garbage mass well then he wouldn't be they can't fucking offend him either with an offer right
because that's uh
that's your quarterback and he's negotiating for himself right so i think it's not like uh
uh hey uh agent has to shape why this was offered it's like straight to lamar and his mom like
we think you're 100 million dollars cheaper than deshaun like they can't do that you know like that
is uh as a human situation.
That's why I always enjoy guys negotiating for themselves because you really put the other team, the other side, like, let's hear what you, you know, as opposed to making this
run around to get a deal done so somebody else can get a percentage of the money that
gets done.
Why don't you just tell me exactly your thoughts?
Now, if Lamar is betting on himself, I find it fascinating that he put up a picture of
the, I need money money and then he also
I think he quote tweeted or liked the tweet
of somebody saying hey whatever Kyler
got just go ahead and add bonus bonus
bonus on top of that and that's
what Lamar's deal is you know so
I don't know if he's currently actively seeking
a new deal because the I need money
and the like of a tweet but by the way we're
on his side we want him to get all the
fucking money or if he is just like we'll talk about this after what i'm about to go fucking do this season as the
sea as the league has slowed down and i've maintained my speed well and they already pissed
him off during the draft too because once they traded hollywood brown he tweeted that i think
it was either a pissed off face or the swearing emoji or whatever the hell it was so like if they
if does that drive the price up because of the fact that it's like,
hey, by the way, you got rid of my best receiver,
and now I really just have Mark Andrews and a couple unproven guys
because Watkins was their other guy, but he's a free agent in Green Bay now.
Such a fine balance there, you know,
because we talked about the relationship or business negotiating spoiling.
It can just take one little thing.
Yeah, and the team like in certain situations
the team could be right though like the team has to make tough decisions that say your star
quarterback may disagree with but it may be the right move for the team i'm not saying this was
but i'm saying that does happen i'm talking negotiation i'm not talking about them moving
on from hollywood they gotta do what they gotta do they thought that was good and allegedly
there was only what like three people that knew that was happening. Yeah, still crazy.
Which I can't believe that happened in 2022.
Banana lands.
Now, there's been more comments
by Bernard
about how no wide receiver will
ever want to go play for Lamar.
And then everybody that has ever come out, that has
ever played alongside Lamar is like, that's not true.
That's not true. But Lamar has the ability
to run better than all of us.
So some throws are going to get taken out of the playbook
because in lieu of that particular pass,
guess what we're doing?
We're giving it to a fucking alien who nobody can tackle.
So that's always going to be a conversation piece
about whether or not Hollywood was a deal breaker for him.
But in the negotiation, if they were to put,
because they're negotiating directly with Lamar.
Imagine they put an addendum in, like,
all right, you can't dunk in flip-flops
in South Florida in the offseason.
Like, can't have this happen.
Stay away from jet skis.
Yeah, it's like those, yeah, him on that beach.
Awesome that he's doing it.
He fucking sicks him.
I mean, it was incredibly athletic. But that he's doing it. He fucking sicks him. It was incredibly
athletic. That's what
the difference is when you're dealing directly
with the person.
As opposed to a third
party that is negotiating.
Burkhart was doing the negotiating
for
Kyler with the Arizona Cardinals.
When the Arizona Cardinals present this
to Burkhart,
Burkhart probably immediately was like,
has anybody ever done this before?
And they go, no.
He goes, well, I'm not doing it.
And the Cardinals go, well, we're not doing a deal.
And you're going to let this be the thing that stops $160 million guaranteed?
So Burkhardt then softens the message to Kyler and to Kyler's people, right?
Because Burkhardt would like a $160 million deal to get done for sure.
And he would also think this is a good deal.
And he heard why the Cardinals thought it was.
And it's almost like he's just trying to get the deal, you know,
what he thinks is fair, $160 million, $230.5 million,
even though it's $103 million over the next three years
when you really dive into the details.
When you're dealing directly with somebody, I mean, it's a different ballgame.
Just as somebody who has actually had to hear what an agent said somebody said during negotiations,
and then me actually sitting in there going, okay, fuck off, basically.
And that is, you can be who you can afford to be.
Kyler Murray is a guy, obviously, who can directly act that way.
Lamar Jackson, also.
What do the Ravens do if Lamar,
now two franchise tags can still happen
after this year, so he can be there for another three years.
I think he'll make 90-some million or
107 million with this year
and then two franchise tags.
He'll make like 100-some million over the next
three years anyways, which is what Kyler is going to make.
Lamar knows that too. That's the thing. He knows
he can stay and get tagged and still
get big- time cash.
But there's no long term, right?
Like if something that fucking Jensen this morning,
that was non-contact fucking out of nowhere.
Don, everybody kneeling around him has not come out, but we assume.
Not great.
You have to assume.
But that's why these guys do these holdings though,
because it's like shit like that can happen.
Just what?
Two days before you're about to sign 60 million dollar deal life-changing money you know like this is
why this type of stuff happens well and you mentioned it with lamar like don't you think
there's a chance like they we've heard that the ravens want him to come in and like they've been
trying to get something done but he sees you know what kyler just went for him before that like
it's very possible that he's just like you know like we know he's gonna bet on himself he's not necessarily worried about getting hurt so why wouldn't you just bet
okay the floor is 250 million if you give me 250 million guaranteed this is done i re-sign if you
don't want to do that if you want to try to do 180 or 200 like that i'm not doing that i got 107
million coming over the next three years we're gonna ball we're gonna have a good time we'll
see how the chips fall. Kyler Murray is currently
speaking right now about
the addendum to the contract that the Arizona
Cardinals offered him. Allegedly,
Kyler Murray is having a surprise press conference where
he says the fallout from the homework
study clause has been disrespectful
and almost a joke.
We're going to go to it. Reporting at
Jay Jones 9. He would
follow up, Kyler Murray lists his accolades and accomplishments since high school.
Those things you can't accomplish if you don't prepare the right way
and take the game serious.
There's another one, I guess, also a follow-up from Jonathan Jones.
Zito has to pull it up from another computer.
I can't wait to see that.
Kyler chatting about it being disrespectful, which is, by the way,
I said if Kyler chatting about it being disrespectful, which is, by the way, I said if Kyler is
a film study guy,
them presenting that
should be a fucking
disrespectful thing.
Like, hey, listen.
He signed it, though.
He did sign it.
Get $106 million guaranteed.
I think he signed
whatever the fuck he wanted.
You know what I mean?
That's what he should say.
Hopefully in that press release
he's saying,
I don't know,
he's listing his accolades
that he's had.
Say you couldn't do this
without preparing.
But he should be like,
you know what?
They came to the right numbers that we wanted this was like a sticking point why not
i can i do this anyway who cares there's two more tweets here from the press conference
kyler murray surprise press conference there's multiple different ways to watch film of course
we all watch film that doesn't need to be questioned i refuse to let my work ethic and
preparation be in question i put in an incomprehensible amount of time in what I do.
Murray isn't interested in answering questions about the study clause,
willing to take questions about football,
but declined to answer a question about his feelings on the Cardinals,
including it in the contract for the first time in the history of contracts.
By the way, joining us now is a man who might know a little bit more about this,
played for the Cardinals for a long time,
played with Kyler his rookie year in Arizona.
Formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Super Bowl champion.
Played for the Colts, Ravens, Steelers, Eagles, Cardinals, Bucs.
Wow.
Super Bowl champion.
Stallion.
A.Q. Shipley.
A.Q.
I'm dealing with the same thing A. thing AJ was dealing with the other day.
My head's half the picture.
How do we get this thing right?
Well, you just move the phone.
I mean, Jesus.
No, see, like, I'm...
There we go.
Yeah, you just move...
It does show him weird, though.
Sometimes it's weird on your end, AQ.
I get it.
Yeah, I know.
I know.
Pat thinks he's got this whole thing fucking figured out.
I do got it figured out.
Fucking just turn the thing.
You look good. You're on a beach. Where are you? I mean, Jesus Christ, I got to just turn the thing. You look good.
You're on a beach.
Where are you?
I mean, Jesus Christ, I got to turn the thing sideways.
It's unbelievable.
Turn that thing.
Where are you right now?
It looks like a great time.
San Diego.
Place is unbelievable.
We had to get out of the heat.
It's uninhabitable in the month of July.
So we came out to California for the month.
He lives in Arizona full time.
Obviously, the Cardinals news just broke.
Hey, let me know you see any seals out there. Tell him we said thank you. I'm not talking about for the month. He lives in Arizona full time. Obviously, the Cardinals news just broke. Hey, let me know you see any Seals
out there. Tell them we said thank you.
I'm not talking about the in the water. I'm talking about
fucking Navy Seals.
You watching Terminal List right now at all?
Any chance you're watching Terminal?
I just finished it. It's an unbelievable show.
Chris Pratt. I'm really hoping there's a season
two. I don't know if there's going to be, but I'm really hoping.
I'm not at the end, so please no spoilers. They do set it up for a potential season two. All but confirmed hoping there's a season two. I don't know if there's going to be, but I'm really hoping. I'm not at the end, so please no spoilers.
They do set it up for a potential season two?
All but confirmed we are getting a season two.
Let's go!
Okay, good news.
Look for him out there.
Jack Corwin might be roaming around the streets.
Okay, let's dive into this.
I was going to talk to you about Tampa, obviously,
because you have a direct relationship both with Jensen and the backup Bob Hainsey. We will get to that after
this. That film study
clause in Arizona, and obviously you've
made Phoenix your home. You played for the Cardinals. You were with
Kyler his rookie year.
He's come out and said the conversation and reaction
around is disrespectful. He puts
in an incomprehensible
amount of work in all this. It's the
first time this has ever been done.
How do you feel about it?
Do you think Kyler is legitimately pissed off about this or just doesn't want to talk about it?
Well, let me start by saying I just caught the tail end
of what you and AJ were talking about.
And AJ brought up a great point, which I think is,
that's what I was like pointing at the camera.
I don't know if anybody saw me, but it's like.
No, we didn't.
If this is so disrespectful to put this clause in,
why the fuck did you sign it?
Okay.
$160 million guaranteed.
But is that really the real number?
Is that the real number?
Have we gotten the real numbers on that?
$103 million over the next three years is allegedly the real number.
But how does he sign it but then not talk about it?
Exactly.
Or now we talk about it four days later because now it's become a big deal.
I don't really get that.
And at the end of the day, if you're so, if you're so, you know, when you want to talk
about how well you prepare and all your study habits, then why, why are we holding a surprise
press conference four days into training camp?
If it, you know what I mean?
Like it's, I don't really understand this whole thing, but at the end of the day, like
to sit there and ask for somebody to what, put somebody to put four hours of film study in a week,
you talk to most quarterbacks, that's laughable.
They do that on a Monday morning.
Yeah, that's bare men is what I've—
Bare men.
Bare men there.
Now, Kyler, I think that would have been his answer.
That should have been his angle.
What's the angle?
Kyler should have been like, four hours is literally—this is not a big deal at all.
I can respect what they did.
I've done this before.
This will not become a conversation.
Move on, right?
Instead, it is a little combative, which I can understand.
But it should have been combative when they presented this in the contract, right?
That's what I think.
It should have been a little bit.
That's when he should have felt disrespected, I think, right?
Don't you?
100%.
Yeah.
I mean, like I said, if you're going to make it a deal handle it whenever it's
the situation at hand and you guys are discussing the terms of the contract don't don't sit there
and sign the contract and then now all of a sudden we come back and become combative three to four
days later so let's just assume that this is going to become something that isn't a conversation
unless end of season ends the same exact way as the last couple years have where everybody else
is getting smarter and better than they injuries happen all teams, but they seem to fall off a little bit.
You know Kime.
I think you know Cliff.
You know Kyler.
You know that Cardinals operation.
You know the strength coach.
You know everybody in there.
You think they're going to take big-time leaps,
and are you excited about the future with the Arizona Cardinals
and Kyler Murray studying four hours of extra film every week?
Listen, they got all the pieces.
It's just a matter of – and you know as well as I do.
I mean, there's plenty of guys and plenty of teams that look fantastic on paper
and they get to the first round of the playoffs and they're one and done, right?
So what is that effect or what is that reason that that happens?
I have no idea.
I mean, you can only know based on your culture,
based on what's going on inside that locker room.
But at the end of the day, on paper, they've got a fantastic team.
They've got a good offensive line.
All their guys are back.
They've got plenty of weapons on the outside.
Once they get DeHoff back after week six,
they've got a tough early part of the schedule.
If they can get through that, you know,
somewhere even in the 500 range and keep it moving and just kind of just
tread water until DeHoff gets back, I think they've got a great shot.
The problem is the NFC West is loaded.
They're loaded.
The NFC West is loaded.
And really, you know, there's a lot of teams on that schedule that they play early.
I mean, heck, they got the Raiders who are monsters on paper.
They got the Chiefs, I think, early, week one or two.
Monsters on paper.
They just signed Carlos Dunlap.
I mean, all these teams that are contenders are going to continue to sign these veteran guys,
as you're seeing in Tampa, as you're seeing in Kansas City,
that are just kind of being able to provide that extra piece as you move forward.
So, you know, like I said, I think on paper they got all the tools.
They got all the pieces.
They paid Kyler the money to take them to the next level.
Let's see if that happens.
Okay, and if four hours of film gets them to the next step, I think everybody will be like,
all right, pumped. Let's go ahead and do that. Let's get to Tampa Bay. We, and if four hours of film gets them to the next step, I think everybody will be like, all right, pumped.
Let's go ahead and do that.
Let's get to Tampa Bay.
We've got to get to six hours.
We've got to get to six hours if it doesn't get them past the first round.
All right?
At least a competitive first round game.
Yeah, I mean, it was bad.
Anyway, let's move down to Tampa Bay.
We're talking to A.Q. Shipley,
who bent over in front of seven number one picks in his entire NFL career.
Kyler Murray was the last one. You also played in Tampa Bay in front of seven number one picks in his entire NFL career. Kyler Murray was the last one.
You also played in Tampa Bay in front of pick 199,
who also happens to be the greatest of all time.
Ryan Jensen, former offensive lineman peer of yours.
I assume a guy you worked very close with whenever you were down in Tampa
on that Super Bowl run.
You subbed in, I think, a couple games for him whenever he got injured.
He came back.
You have massive respect for him.
I know that.
Non-contact drills this morning.
A couple days into training camp, still in phase three,
not even all the way in there.
It feels like Jensen's out for the fucking season.
What a bummer.
What a terrible thing.
And when something like this happens,
how does it affect the rest of the offensive line, you think, AQ?
Yeah, it's such a tough thing.
I mean, in my opinion, he's obviously a top ten lineman in this league.
I think he's one of the top two centers in this league.
And, you know, you and I have spoke about this.
I think you spoke about this plenty of times.
Beyond what he does physically for that team, he's the tone setter.
I mean, he's the absolute tone setter.
You know, you show up to a 1 o'clock game and you're playing a team
that you're supposed to beat and there's no energy during warm-ups.
We've all been there, right?
You've all felt it.
Oh, yeah.
He's the guy that brings it.
He's going to get a – you can call it a late hit.
You can do whatever.
He's going to start something after a play.
He's going to get that tone flipped around to get those guys rolling.
So he brings so much to that team.
I mean, it's such a – you know, if to get those guys rolling. So he brings so much to that team.
And it's such a, you know, if it does end up being a year-long thing,
I mean, that's such a big blow to that team because he brings so much more than what he is already as a top two center physically to that locker room.
AQ, for his backup who comes in, I assume that you know that guy.
Bob Hainsey.
What's his name?
Bob Hainsey. AQ's been training him the last, like, three months. backup who comes in and i i assume that you know that guy bob hansley what's his name bob hansley
aq's been training him the last like three months aq how would like how will teams early in the year
test that guy we know he's gonna be snapping the ball to tom brady like i would assume
he may be a little bit anxious early like how do you test the center to see if he if he has it
yeah so you see it a lot right you see teams that um you know they'll start running a bunch
of games inside right they'll start running a bunch of games inside,
right? They'll start running a bunch of double barrel to see how you kind of handle the two
linebackers up the A-gap. They'll cover you down, five down to make everybody go one-on-one,
see if he can hold up one-on-one, right? There's going to be a couple of those different little
instances or nuances amongst defensive coordinators that are going to try and test him and see what he
can do, see if he can pick up all these things. You're going to send a couple, you know, a Will Free safety,
a Sam Strong safety, see if he can get the guys on the right pickup, right?
There's going to be different tests that teams will send at him.
But, listen, I mean, this guy, I think he's awesome.
I mean, I think I trained him for four weeks in the spring.
I trained him for four weeks this summer.
And mentally, he's a year 10 guy mentally already and you know he's just
got to get the reps physically in there at center i mean he's a notre dame guy you guys all know the
way notre dame linemen come into this league ready to kind of play um thank you so he's more than
capable to kind of step in and do what he has to do and you know it's a shame what happened to
jensen but you know i think a lot of guys are probably looking forward to seeing what he can
do as well.
Okay.
Is Tom Brady the one calling out the blitzes or is Center in that offense doing it?
It's a little bit of both, right?
I mean, you know, Tom for as many years, he's so smart.
He kind of controls the whole thing.
Center's doing a lot of the stuff.
You know, but Tom always has, you know, kind of trump power.
I mean, he's – you know, there's a handful of quarterbacks
that kind of have that ability, that veto power.
I think Cam Drew, Peyton, kind of all those guys,
the superstar smart cerebral guys, they always have that ability
where they're kind of the final answer.
Trump card, you meant.
Is that what I said?
What did I say?
You said Trump power.
Yeah.
Like Donald.
Trump card.
Grammar police over here.
It's not grammar police.
You know, because there's people probably tweeting you immediately.
Hey, Bow White!
We're not allowed to mention that word anymore?
Well, it's a trump card.
It's the thing that's been said since the beginning of time.
I mean, there's literally, that's a...
I brought you January 6th.
Hey, that's AJ's birthday.
I was in San Diego.
That's AJ's birthday.
That's AJ's birthday, by the way, Jay.
That's what I was asking.
Heck of a birthday party.
Up there in D.C. at a heck of a birthday party.
I was in Columbus.
Oh, yeah.
I'm sure you were.
Come to Street Giant Town, please.
AQ, there's a lot of offensive lines who have, like,
two or more starters that are different than last year on the offensive line.
How long does it take for an offensive line,
for all five guys to feel comfortable with each other?
Is it an entire season?
Can it be done in a training camp?
How does that go?
Does it take beers?
Go ahead.
I mean, it's a great question.
Thank you.
I think it depends.
Honestly, I think it depends team to team, person to person, really.
I think, you know, some guys just, you know,
have great chemistry off the field to start.
And, you know, it might be a guard who's been a backup,
who everybody loves.
He walks in, he gets some work in the offseason with the guys,
and he's ready to rock and roll.
Or it's a guy that kind of gets, you know, slung into it really.
And, you know, here he is and he's middle of training camp and now you've got to really break him in.
It's like it could take some weeks. So I guess to answer your question, I think it's it's a case by case scenario.
It depends on kind of what the team is and probably it honestly depends on what position it is.
Right. Like breaking in a new center is going to be completely different than breaking in a new guard when you've got four guys around him, right?
So it's really just a case-by-case thing.
Bob Haynes he liked?
Very well liked.
That's good news.
Yeah.
Let's go.
That's really good news.
So they got Bob's young, right?
Listen, this Tristan, year three, right?
People call him future Hall of Famer.
Him and Tristan are best friends.
There you go.
Okay.
I guess the first day of camp, if it was going to happen,
is the best day for it.
That was a silver lining that Ty pointed out there
because now they have time to build it,
but you fucking lose a top 10 lineman before pads even go on.
I mean, Jensen's incredible.
I mean, what he's able to do at that position, he's incredible.
He's one of the most athletic dudes I've ever seen.
He's super physical.
He finishes.
He finishes everybody.
He finishes everybody.
Don't be standing around.
He's trying to put people
on the ground at all times.
Teammates love him.
Everybody else in the NFL hates him.
Correct. He's that guy.
A lot of celebrating this morning in other
locker rooms, potentially.
I think people also
like... They have respect.
They respect it.
There's a big respect there.
Anybody that's just willing to fucking literally fight
anybody on earth, I'm a fan of.
I'm a big fan. If you're just willing to just...
I'll go start shit with that fucking guy.
I like this.
This is a great story.
So I was in Baltimore in 2013 after I got traded from you guys at the Colts, right?
Well, I didn't do that. We drafted Jensen in the sixth round.
And he's had this mentality since day one.
He's that rookie that came in and, like, first day of OTAs,
he's trying to fight Pernell McPhee.
He's trying to fight Chris Canty.
He's trying to go after Suggs.
He's going after everybody.
And everybody's like, who the fuck is this lunatic?
Get him off the field.
And right.
So then like he just, I mean, he's been that way since day one.
So this is not like an act.
Like this is like he's a D2 or D3 guy or whatever he was.
And he comes in, six round pick,
and he's had a chip on his shoulder from day one
and has just been trying to fucking melee everybody since.
Leagues, you'll miss him this year.
Obviously, we're all hoping positive, but offensive linemen go down,
team around them in practice normally, right?
AQ, I'm not misreading this situation.
No, I mean, you hope for the best.
It's one of them things where it's, you know,
I think everybody's cautiously optimistic,
but at the end of the day, like when the card comes out
and people are on knees, it's not good.
It's not sounding good.
Hey, good luck with rehab, Jensen.
Peace and peace.
Appreciate everything you've done for a week, pal.
Ty, your question for AQ Shipley.
AQ is a guy like Bob Haney.
Is there, like,
Hainsey, excuse me.
Can you even...
This guy's Tom Brady's fucking center. I know he is.
Well, that's what I want to ask.
For a young guy about to start, can you even
quantify what it is that
Brady is his quarterback as opposed
to being on a different team and having
a young guy who might stink
playing quarterback? Can you even quantify how important that is and how quickly that could bring him along?
Every snap matters.
That's a great question, honestly, and it's so true, right?
If you're sitting there and you're a young guy and you've got a rookie quarterback,
who's, I don't know, maybe only getting a handful of study hours in on the week
and not really knowing sure.
Less than four hours.
Jeez.
That wasn't.
That wasn't.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Well.
And, you know, that's a super tough situation because now you're asked to do everything.
You're asked to see everything.
You're asked to see the blitzes.
You're asked to see the safeties cheating over this guy walking down. You're asked to see the linebackers at levels showing a cross dog. You're
asked to see two, three techniques, linebackers inside. What can come, right? There's a million,
there's a million different things that can happen. And, you know, when you've got a guy
that's been doing this for 23 years, he can really point you in the right direction a lot quicker.
And you really don't have as much stress on there to see everything so yeah that's a great question and you know there's not a better
person to have behind you whenever you're kind of thrown into the fire like this oh yeah aq what
kind of uh what kind of leader is kyle and murray out there in arizona listen i you know i was with
my rookie years i haven't been there his rookie a while. His rookie year. His rookie year. His rookie year.
Yeah, I'm all over the place.
I'm sorry.
A lot of beach time over here.
I'm enjoying the beach.
Sorry.
This guy's smoking dope.
Dope, dope.
This guy's all dope, dope.
Smoking dope over there.
Dope head.
Jesus.
From his rookie year. Come back down to Earth, man.
My God.
Come on down.
Jeez.
Hi, guys.
Bring it down.
All right. Come on. Now, from his rookie year until now, I mean, the team Jeez. All right, guys. Bring it down. All right, come on.
Now, from his rookie year until now, I mean, the team's improved.
He's improved.
He's obviously taking control of that team and taking control of that locker room.
He's the guy now, right?
I mean, that contract says you're the guy.
So now I think what they're going to ask of him now is to take that next step as a leader.
So, you know, I think you come in your first year and you've got Larry Fitzgerald
and you've got some other guys in that Chandler Jones,
some other guys in that locker room, right?
That you don't have to be counted on
as to be that guy and that leader.
Well, now you're the guy, you're the leader,
you're the contract, you're the franchise, right?
You're the face of that team.
So they're going to ask more of him,
obviously moving forward as a leader.
And I think he's obviously,
he's been a proven winner at every level he's been at
and he'll continue to do that
here. Okay, and he's only
going to get better. Guys watching film.
That's disrespectful for us to even
say, but it's the first time something's ever been
done, and there's a way of tracking it all, so
let's just move on. He's going to be better than ever. Last
question for us before we let you get back to your vacation
because, honestly, you deserved it.
You've earned it.
Is flexibility the number one thing for offense alignment?
Because this video hit the internet, Mr. Lovelace, who ended up at USC,
and I've seen him do stuff you ain't never think about doing,
and it just kind of confused.
Can we please run this?
Can we run?
Do we have it?
There it is.
This is going to help, right?
That's the hamstring. There's the low back. Have you? This is going to help, right?
That's the hamstring.
There's a low back.
Low back, hamstring, ankle, groin, all just popped.
Hey, this is good though, right?
This is going to make him.
Listen, at the end of the day.
Look at him zoomed in.
He's just as close.
That guy just do a full swing.
Have you ever seen that before? That guy doing a split roll.
6'5", 320.
Able to do all this, AQ.
Listen, I think flexibility is key.
I think, you know, I think at the end of the day, I've seen guys.
The guys will be great.
The guys will be great.
I think I've seen guys that can't touch their fucking kneecaps that go on and be all pros.
So listen, at the end of the day, you know, it's yeah, you had Usman on yesterday.
There's a lot of heart and mental mindset that goes into this game of football.
How about that?
How about he's given that was a pretty awesome interview.
Dude, he's given us two like speeches.
Both times he's been on.
That's like, oh oh this guy is a motivational
speaker like legit motivational speaker as well you might have got better technically i did too
he said but i'm not fighting your moves i'm not fighting your skill set i'm fighting your fucking
heart i am trying to kill you basically that is and i'm not i will break your will i mean it is
that guy's a dog i would love to have him on the Colts.
Let's get him on the Colts.
There has to be a position for that.
He'd cover a kick, right? Oh, yeah.
Slot receiver, maybe.
Whatever he wants.
AQ, we appreciate you, pal.
Please tell the family we said hello and enjoy yourself.
Hey, always a pleasure, boys.
All right, ladies and gentlemen, AQ Shipman.
Yeah, AQ!
Joining us now, Chief Medical Officer.
This guy's in the C-suite.
Hey, this dude is in the C.
Chief Medical Officer.
First ever in the history of the NFL.
Came into his title March of 2017.
Ladies and gentlemen, the man who said, we're playing football.
Okay, Dr. Alan Sill.
Yeah, Doc!
How are you? Hey, I'm doing great. Dr. Alan Sill. Yeah, Doc! How are you?
Hey, I'm doing great.
Thanks for having me on.
Doc, before we get into this, can I call you Doc?
Sure.
Doc, before we get into this, I don't know if your family or friends ever celebrate you
for the decision that you made, which was the first of its kind in the time that we
were in, in COVID, Dr. Anthony
Fauci was the protocol giver. Hey, this is what we're doing. The entire world was like, all right,
we go as Fauci says we go. Then he actually came out and said the NFL should not do what they are
have a season or anything like that. And then a week after that, this is when we got introduced to you.
Dr. Alan Sills said, hey, we appreciate you, Dr. Fouch.
Okay, thank you for everything you said.
We've done our research.
We think we can have a season.
We can have games.
Protocols are put into place.
There were some delays and some movement, and there was outbreak.
But it feels like got through a season, had no deaths,
feel like you're overcautious, and people are talking about how, like, hey,
that's a monumental decision that was made.
I hope you celebrate that every once in a while,
and we as NFL fans appreciate the hell out of you for that.
Well, I'll tell you, it was a really remarkable achievement,
and the credit doesn't go just to me, but to really everybody involved.
I mean, we talk about teamwork in football.
There was never a better example of teamwork when you think about the sacrifices made by coaches, players, you know, owners, team administration and the league and the players union all just working together to get the games done.
And as you said, we're really trying to find the middle ground.
We certainly wanted to keep people safe and we took this very seriously.
But we also felt like we'd like to move forward with life and some of the things that we
all enjoy. And so it was quite a journey, but the credit goes to the entire league and it's
something I'm really proud of. And something a lot of people may not know along the way,
we contributed a ton of knowledge to the scientific community. I mean, we basically
were meeting with CDC and FDA and others and sharing with them the data that we had, because
we had some of the best data around
and we ended up publishing a couple of things with them.
So it was, I think, a proud moment for the NFL,
not only to be able to stay and keep going forward,
but to contribute a lot of knowledge that helped a lot of people.
I agree.
Everybody had to buy in, okay, around the NFL.
But, hey, your ass was on the line with that doc.
You know what I mean?
Like, you are a doctor i was like this is
if that goes the other way because at that point i think none of us had a clue none what was going
to happen and obviously you're much smarter than us thank fucking god but you are much smarter than
us but honestly that could have went the other way so you putting your name out there in everything
and you know standing by the nfl being able to operate I just we are
very grateful for it we are very very grateful and you should be applauded for that for a long
time now let's move on when you got hired March of 2017 did you know and did was it explained
like hey we obviously are having some issues medical wise long-term wise we're learning a lot
more we need somebody to come into place that can break things down, numbers down more.
Is that how the job started?
And is that why you have cared so much about the rule changes?
And now we're wearing these guardian caps on helmets.
Is it all kind of tied in together?
And when you were introduced to the NFL, what was it like, Hey, this guy's going to save
our league basically, or what?
Well, I think when the
NFL reached out to me first of all I've been involved with pro sports for several decades
and also college sports you know I've been a team doctor really at every level at high school level
to college level and I've worked in in pro basketball and pro hockey and worked with the
NFL so you know my interest and background was in sports concussion but I'd also taken care of a lot
of other athletic conditions and you know when the league came to me, obviously, as you said, concussion was issue number one.
And they really said, we want to get this right.
We want to be on the right side of this.
We want to make the game as safe as we can for our players.
We want to do it from a scientific standpoint, and we'd like you to help us get there.
And I found that to be true.
I mean, I think everyone from the commissioner down, owners, coaches,
they're interested in having the safest environment that they can for players.
They just want good data to drive those decisions.
And that's what we've always tried to do is not just give opinion, but actually go and do the hard work and do the research that generates that kind of data.
One thing that the commissioner said to me early on that I really, really agree with and I think is a mantra for all of us the game can be made both safer and more
exciting those are not mutually exclusive goals and that's what we're really trying to do is
figure out how can we make the game safer while still preserving the excitement that we all love
and what makes the sport as great as it is. Doc with the guardian caps and I see them you know
when training camp opens up we see all these teams wearing them. Can you explain what exactly they do, how they help the players,
and also why isn't every player wearing them?
I saw Aaron Rodgers jumping out to the field there not wearing a Guardian cap.
What?
Make sure he gets one on his helmet.
Can we put one on his head?
We need one.
Yeah, I've actually got one handy here that I'll show you.
You've got them on the picture.
But it's basically a soft layer of padding that you can see
that fits over the shell of the helmet, and it's meant just to absorb force, so it fixes to the helmet with some of these little Velcro scraps that you see.
And the idea is that when the helmet is struck, that you've got a force reduction.
Our engineers and the union's engineers working together tested this in the laboratory,
the same testing we do for helmets, and found that any time the helmet is hit,
when the Guardian Cap is on, you've got at least a 10% force reduction, in some cases more.
If you've got two players wearing the guardian cap, you get an additive effect, so it's 20%
or more reduction.
Now, we started with certain positions.
What about three, Doc?
Say it.
Three guys coming in the ball, maybe 100.
I want to see 11 guys in the shot at the end.
That's what you start doing, 110%.
Holy shit!
You were two caps.
Let's go!
Our research focused on who are the position groups
that have the highest rate of head contact.
When you look on the field,
the people that are getting hit the most in the head right now
are linemen, O-line, D-line, tight ends, and linebackers.
Then if you look at the period of the year,
when during the season is the most contact, it's during those first two weeks of training camp. That's when their
contact practices day after day. A lot of people don't realize that our teams only have about 14
contact practices through the entire season once the season begins. There's not a lot of contact.
And you guys, if you go out and go to practice, you know that. But during training camp, there's
a much more focused period. So we said, let's start with the people who seem to have the most head impacts. Let's start with a period of
time where they tend to be occurring. Let's study that. Let's gather more data. So we think the lab
science is strong, but we want to see the real world data. We want to get the feedback of players.
We'll see what effect it has on concussions and other injuries. We've also got some players wearing
instrumented mouth guards so we can measure the force and we'll be able to make on-field measurements of how effective were
these caps in reducing force. But let me add one other point to that, guys, that may not be
immediately obvious. It's not just about preventing concussion in that moment. We also believe there
may be an accumulation of hits that happens that none of any one of those produces injury,
but as they accumulate over the course of the season that they may predispose the athlete to injury so we're just trying to reduce the number of hits and the force that are being felt early on
in the hopes to making that athlete safer throughout the whole season doc i know a lot
of players probably didn't like that especially the old school players how heavy is this thing
are these guys running into huddles you know with like extra
weight on the how heavy is the guardian doc you know you're you're talking about 12 to 14 ounces
as you can see it's it's really flexible out of a flexible material so it's it's it's a negligible
amount of weight and and don't forget that guys have used pullover caps on their helmets for a
long time again if you go to practice you see them practicing special teams and other assignments so
putting something over the helmet is something that's happened for a long time. Again, if you go to practice, you see them practicing special teams and other assignments. So putting something over the helmet is something that's happened for a
long time. It's just this particular design is new with the padding that it has. Okay, so the guy
that is on the far right side of this screen on your left right there, his name is AJ Hawk. He's
the all-time leading tackler for the Green Bay Packers. He's from Ohio, so you know what that means, Doc. You've probably met some people from Ohio.
He's laughing.
He was obviously zero documented concussions.
He didn't wear a mouthpiece because he actually thought that that kind of set
your mouth a little bit more for a potential concussion.
Now, he is an anomaly, though.
I think he has a much thicker skull than other people.
Once again, we're going back to Ohio.
Is that a thing, Doc? Is that going back to Ohio. Is that a thing, Doc?
Is that a thing?
Yeah.
Is that a thing?
Skulls do have a great thickness.
You know, in my other job, I'm a neurosurgeon, so I operate on people's brains, and I cut through skulls, and they definitely do have different thicknesses.
There's no question about that.
Okay, so like some of these things, you guys from your research, like there's just some people who have heads that just aren't going to get affected by this. Is there a way to find out who's more likely at risk? So then you can target
a little bit more on like, Hey, you should probably wear this. You should wear this or
maybe make changes for them through practice or no. Well, I think that's a really active area
of research because it's not just the thickness of the skull. It probably has to do with a whole
lot of other factors with brain volume and the volume of fluid around the brain and some genetic
factors. And we don't understand all of that. But we are already on a roadmap of looking at
position specific helmets. So one of the things that our research has showed is different positions
suffer concussions in different ways. For example, quarterbacks tend to get concussions from falling
backwards. They're throwing, they're falling back unprotected. They hit their back of their head on
the ground. And so it's the back or the occipital area that suffers the blow. Offensive linemen tend
to get a lot more blows directly in the front of the helmet. So last year, we saw the introduction
of the first offensive line specific helmet, a helmet called the trench helmet that was worn by
a few players. And I think you will see more of that type of innovation over the coming couple of years
so that a running back and a quarterback and a defensive back and a linebacker, they may
be wearing different models or types of helmets for that specific reason that it reduces their
specific risk of injury.
So, Doc, like the quarterback helmet would just look like this out the backside of it.
Is that is that maybe to that but the idea
is yeah you want to put more padding and more reinforcement wherever the blows tend to occur
that are causing injury for that particular player well this just makes sense right because in cars
you put where do you put the airbags out probably where you're ending up at that's kind of how
you're thinking it yeah exactly and and a lot of the design work comes out of automobile safety
some of the engineers that work with us have worked in auto safety.
You've seen cars become incrementally so much safer because of some of these same principles.
So they've gone back.
Our engineers have gone back.
They've looked at every concussion that's happened in the league over the last seven years by video
and studied all the variables of exactly how it's happening, who's hitting who and where.
And helmets have gotten dramatically better.
I mean, we estimate that the rate of improvement in helmets,
it's about nine times greater than it used to be.
And so our helmets today are clearly better than they were even five years ago,
certainly 10 years ago, and that will keep improving.
So that alone won't keep us safe.
We've still got to work on reducing head contact,
but there's no doubt that helmets are safer and better today
than what we've seen in the last decade.
Doc, is there anything with the Medulla and Bogota right here?
I'm impressed.
You got the right terminology, and you definitely want to keep that safe.
Okay, all right.
I didn't know if we're getting enough.
Thank you, Dr. Myron.
Go ahead, AJ, your question for Dr. Alan Sills.
Doc, I've never had the chance to actually wear one of those Guardian caps
on top of my helmet.
The only thing I thought of when I first saw it, though,
we used to get in the basement and beat each other up with boxing gloves when I was a kid, growing up high school.
When we would throw headgear on, those shots felt way worse to me. They were like a weird, dull thud where I felt like rocked my brain a lot more than when I wasn't wearing the headgear.
Does the Guardian do anything like that?
Well, we obviously, in in the laboratory we think it reduces
the force and then we've also talked with a lot of people who have experience in college so over
100 ncaa colleges and universities have used these over the the last few years and all the big name
programs i mean alabama georgia ohio state clemson all these schools are using them player feedback
there has actually been the opposite direction most players have said they feel less force for
a helmet impact or they feel better after a practice wearing the guardian cap. So we obviously want to
get that same feedback from NFL players because there's no substitute for the real world feedback.
But what we've been able to glean from college players plus the laboratory data makes us think
that that it should be the opposite effect in players. How about since it's adding, you know, like size to the helmet, is there more
grazing and passing contact than maybe ever before? And does that have any effect long term?
Yeah, that's something that we studied because the concern was, you know, does it increase the
friction or increase the time that the helmets touch each other? And our engineers looked at
that in the laboratory, thought that it was a fairly negligible effect. One interesting thing
we've seen, though, is some of the the rams where wore this guardian cap last year the
entire season and several other teams use them on their linemen specifically because they thought it
would protect quarterbacks from breaking or injuring their fingers you know when guys are
throwing it and they accidentally hit a helmet that's a common mechanism of injury as you guys
know and so some of the teams were wearing them for that reason alone because they thought
it was going to make a higher margin of safety for quarterbacks operating in the pocket.
Go ahead, Diggs.
Doctor, do you ever see a time where you'll recommend that these are actually worn during
the game?
And secondly, is there a difference between turf and grass as far as concussions?
So taking the first question, I think we've got a lot more data and a lot more work to
do there.
Again, we'll get a lot of data out of this preseason and where we see the results taking
us.
And so, I am confident that helmets will continue to get better and the technology will get
better, the design will get better, the materials will get better.
Everything about it will get better.
But you know, we started with what we thought were the most vulnerable people at the most
vulnerable time of year, and we'll go from there as to what makes thought were the most vulnerable people at the most vulnerable time of year.
And we'll go from there as to what makes sense as the set of next steps. In terms of concussion rates on turf versus grass, we've not seen appreciably different rates in that.
One of the things we're starting to understand, though, not to dive too far in the weeds, is when you start talking about surfaces,
when you group them and say artificial versus natural,
that's really not the best distinction because there's so much variability inside each category.
Kentucky bluegrass.
Kentucky bluegrass.
How about the grass in Green Bay in August versus the grass in Green Bay in January, right?
I mean, that's very different.
And the same way with artificial surfaces.
grass in Green Bay in January, right? I mean, that's very different. And the same way with artificial surfaces, it has a lot to do with how you maintain them and how much they're groomed and
change out and things like that. So we've got a lot more work to do. We've really, really put a
lot of time and energy into studying surface, more so around foot and ankle injuries and knee injuries,
because we're trying to see how does surface contribute to that. But as we dig into this
topic, we find out it is really,
really complicated. It's not just as simple as grass is good and synthetic is bad or vice versa.
There are so many subcategories that we have to account for. We're starting to better understand what is it about the surface, the actual properties that may contribute to injury.
Doc, one thing that changed as far as rules for players when I was in the league, when I first
got in the league, you didn't have to wear any pads in your pants. A lot of guys, you would see your pants are way above your knees, not wearing any pads because you like to feel fast, feel good. Then they started making us wear knee pads. Instead, the knee pads had to go over your knee and all of that. I never knew. I'm like, what are we doing this for? They told me that knee pad is for when someone's running and their head hits your knee, it lessens the blow.
That knee pad is for when someone's running at their head, hits your knee, it lessens the blow.
But the knee pads that we wear were less than a quarter inch thick pretty much.
So I thought, how much data is there that actually helps?
Yeah, I don't think we have nearly as much data as we do on helmets and concussions and things like that. But certainly we do see people that have thigh contusions and hematomas.
You know, one of the problems that happens when you take a direct helmet to the thigh muscle, to the quadricep, it is the biggest muscle in the body. And so you can have bleeding
inside that muscle that really causes, you know, a significant amount of disability and can keep
people out for a while. So I think the goal in there is trying to reduce the incidence of that.
But obviously, we've got a lot more work to do on other areas of the body. One of the things we're
studying, for example, are shoulder pads.
You know, shoulder pads really have not been analyzed and studied the way we have helmets.
There have not been a lot of changes in shoulder pad technology.
If you think back to like the 80s and 90s, you remember guys that had these big, giant, huge shoulder pads that, you know, came halfway up their head.
Now we've gone to the other side, the minimal, really thin shoulder pads.
But we don't really have data about which one's better or safer. So we're working on that really actively and hope to have some recommendations within the
next year or so. But I think the larger point is we need to think about the whole body,
including the cleats. We do a lot of work on footwear, what cleats people wear and how that
might relate to injury. We actually track every cleat. We have a little RFID chip in the cleat,
so we know what footwear every player
is wearing and we're trying to begin to sort out which ones may be more associated with injury
there. When did you start doing that? Tracking shoes? Last year. Personal shoes at home too?
No, no. Just ones that are worn on game day. Oh, okay. Yeah. Cause I remember you guys had those
guys wearing like the tracking things, right? What you had to do in the building and see who.
Yeah. That was for, that was for COVID contact tracing. tracing that that's different no this is just a chip to measure
what type of shoe we do the same with helmets so we know what helmet a player is wearing and that's
what has allowed us to make these rate calculations so we know the injury rate on field for every
helmet and we can tell the guy hey that helmet has the lowest injury rate for concussion or that has
the highest you know we think that's important data that players should have.
Players still get to choose their helmets,
but at least they'll have the data sort of like you have when you go to shop
for a car.
You know the safety test results and you can decide, you know,
what's right for your situation.
Last question here, and we can't thank you enough for joining us.
We know you're very busy trying to make the game that we all love much safer
and hopefully, you know, last forever.
Of course.
That's what we all want, last forever.
How much have you been told, and you don't have to pat yourself on the back,
we will do this because obviously the game has advanced so much
and it feels like people are safer and more healthy than they've ever been.
Even though it's a violent game, people are always going to get hurt.
That stinks.
It sucks.
But how can you help prevent it as much as possible?
You were the first chief medical officer in the NFL in 2017.
How many different occasions pop up where they go, oh, thank God we got a doc around?
Is that something that I would assume on a very regular basis? Has it been like openly chatted
about like, how did we get all the way to 2017 without a chief medical officer in football?
Is that ever talked about? And how was your feeling of how you were introduced and welcomed into the NFL chief suite? Well, I can't speak to what happened prior
to 2017, but I can tell you that it's been a terrific partnership from my view. I've had
nothing but collaboration and cooperation, again, from the commissioner to the owners,
to all the league execs, to coaches. I mean, for example, this offseason, we met one-on-one with all the head coaches
and their staffs talking about certain aspects of lower extremity injuries.
So I think people have welcomed it.
They want the game to be safer and to last, as you said, and as we said before,
I think it can be safer and still be very exciting.
I think our best days are in front of us because I don't personally accept
that there's a certain amount of injuries that have to happen. I think we can do a lot to of us because I don't personally accept that there's a certain
amount of injuries that have to happen. I think we can do a lot to drive those injuries down across
the board, whether it's concussion or knee ligament or a foot and ankle. And we like to say
there's really no finish line for health and safety. We want to constantly look to innovate
and make the game better and safer. And we've got great partnerships. The union has been a great
partner of ours in that as well. And so there's a lot more to do, but I like the course that we're
on. All right. Well, we appreciate the hell out of you.
Connor, last question here.
Yeah, doctor.
In a hypothetical world, let's say a fullback and a linebacker, you know,
run into each other at practice,
and then the linebacker has like a tooth that disintegrates completely.
Would you test them both immediately right after for concussions?
Or would you like maybe mix up the mouth guard
and make sure they have all the proper equipment?
Well, we always want players to have the best equipment.
And we spend a lot of time doing education on that.
As you know, we put a poster out every year that ranks all the helmets on how they do on our helmet testing
and also how they do on field, as we were talking about a minute ago.
And anytime somebody suffers a blow to the head, we've got a certain checklist of visible signs that are watched.
So whether it's at practice or at a game, the medical staff is going to be looking certain checklist of visible signs that are watched. So whether it's at practice
or at a game, the medical staff is going to be looking for any of those signs. And if they see
any of those signs, they're going to pull that player out for a concussion evaluation. I mean,
that's just what our concussion protocol is designed to do. So not every big helmet contact
or not every big collision produces one of those signs, thankfully. But if it happens, it's no
different in practice than it is in a game. And we want to make sure the players get the appropriate care. So again,
I give credit to our team medical staffs, our team docs and athletic trainers. They're at practice
every day, as you know, and they're really providing the same type of care at the practice
field as we would have on game day. Through your research, have you seen like just being
like a super toxic person as a side effect from concussions?
I don't know that I can speak to that one. So it sounds like you got somebody in mind. I'm not going to ask you. It's a guy you're right next to right there. And since it came up, there is
a lot of studies that say mouth guard helps with concussion, like kind of taking care of precautions.
guard helps with concussion um like kind of taking care of precautions yeah i'm not i'm not in i don't agree with that i would say that most studies say mouth guards don't affect the rate of concussion
mouth guards are really good at preventing dental trauma for getting teeth knocked out
here we go doc they don't do a lot for protecting concussion So that's what the title says. Hold on.
Doc, CMO, Chief Medical Officer of the biggest league in the world.
Wow.
Okay.
Neurosurgeon?
Yeah.
Neurosurgeon.
Do you know that man that we just told a story about
where he ran headfirst into somebody
and his tooth disintegrated in his mouth?
And he's the all-time leading tackler for the Green Bay Packers in the helmet the helmet era and he has zero documented concussions and wore
no mouthpieces he's been saying this since the beginning like mouthpieces do not change i said
protect your teeth i said exactly what doc said protect your teeth that's what it does doc did
you speak to this guy when he was at the packers and say hey this i don't think he and i've ever
spoken before so wow that's kind of a common misconception, isn't it?
Yeah, I think it is.
And again, there's certainly a protective effect on teeth
and there's dental trauma, oral trauma, things like that.
But as far as reducing the force for a concussion,
we've not seen mouth guards provide a whole lot of benefit.
Doc!
Unreal.
Anytime you have anything to say,
we would be honored for you to come on here and do it.
Thank you so much for sharing your wealth.
Thank you for this full-time.
Obviously, you're chief.
You full-time with the NFL now these days?
Yeah, I still practice a little bit.
I'm a neurosurgeon down at Vanderbilt,
so I still take care of some patients there,
but it's a pretty full-time role with the NFL.
Well, thank you for your service to the game.
We can't wait to see what happens next in the evolution of the league that we love.
Ladies and gentlemen, the CMO of the NFL, Dr. Alan Sims.
Thank you.
Thank you, Dr.
Let's bounce around to a bunch of random training camps, shall we, A.J.
Hawk, and just see how excited the NFL fans are.
Hey, let's go to Pittsburgh real quick.
Let's see how it is.
The stands are filled for Pittsburgh Steeler football.
Who's our quarterback?
We don't know.
Yins won't go up.
St. Vincent, we do.
Everybody's there.
They've been packed.
AJ, look at the Pittsburgh Steeler fans.
Is this a home game or is this a training camp practice?
Boom, first day of training camp.
Not even wearing pads.
Still in phase three.
Let's bounce.
Let's go to Denver.
Russell Wilson. Let's ride to training camp, not even wearing pads, still in phase three. Let's bounce, let's go to Denver, Russell Wilson.
Let's ride to training camp.
Look at this place packed out.
Russell Wilson tucked in game pants.
Nobody else wearing that because you're not wearing pads yet,
only wearing shorts and uppers.
He's wearing the jersey, the pants, and he's riding around Denver
saying we are back.
There's the John Elway era.
There's the Peyton Manning championships.
Welcome to the Russell Wilson era. There's the Peyton Manning championships.
Welcome to the Russell Wilson era.
Slapping hands, kissing babies.
He is getting the fanfare in Denver that he deserves.
And maybe this team's all the way back with the richest owner in the NFL in that Broncos country.
Let's ride.
Road, right there, asses into training camp, didn't they, AJ?
Look at this.
Look at this group.
I love how Russ is in his full gear, full pants full pants full jersey tucked in when no one else is wearing
pants yeah that's what we love he said if you tell me you need to do an x amount of things i'm
gonna triple it he literally said that just yesterday just one day after he showed up at
training camp wearing his own jersey in public russell wilson the prototype and obviously
denver's excited let's go over to the Chargers.
You know, the second team allegedly in L.A.
Hold it.
Shit.
Look at the fans for the Chargers in L.A.
They got Herbert.
They got a brand-new squad.
Derwin James currently holding in.
But the Chargers faithful are going bananas, AJ.
This is amazing.
I mean, the Chargers, are we used to them having this kind of crowd at training camp?
They couldn't get this at the stadium that they were playing in the MLS.
StubHub.
StubHub saying congrats to the Chargers.
Look at their fans.
All right, let's go to Green Bay.
You know, they're going to pack the house, aren't they?
Oh, yeah.
Of course.
Leachersville, the NFL's back.
Our team's back.
Back-to-back MVPs has come back-to-back-to-back to Green Bay on a new deal.
We lose Devontae, but, hey, we're going to ball out on the defensive side.
That's right.
Let's go to New England.
Oh, the dynasty under a new era.
Look at all the bleachers in the back.
The place is packed.
Randomly, let's bounce around the NFL now.
Let's go to Washington and see the commanders.
Let's dot.
Oh, you got to be shit.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
They're dead.
Oh, no. When was dead. Oh, no.
When was this from?
That's how the show just ended.
What's this?
Did we know this?
Wait, what?
This is a joke.
This is some sort of goof.
Yeah, come on.
Go to the place where they're actually. Is this 10 hours before practice starts?
It has to be.
It has to be.
That had to be in the middle of summer.
They were just practicing for training camp.
This is 11 a.m. this morning.
So it was practice tonight at midnight?
Yeah, no.
Like a midnight madness?
No, yeah, it must be a midnight bonanza.
Has to.
Has to be, yeah.
They're all waiting to watch Dan Snyder's subpoena.
Oh, that's where they're at.
They have a watch party.
Don't judge them by this.
They're watching Snyder perform at the oversight committee.
I think it was over before 11, though, his entire thing.
No, there was a tweet.
That is an all day.
He's been still going.
Yeah, they're watching.
Obviously, the fans are watching.
All right.
Don't worry about the Commanders fans being not excited at all for their team to be back.
Let's talk about how great this is.
Look at all those other teams showing up at training camp.
Look at their fans getting excited for the season.
Also, I mean, having the old logo front and center there in that picture.
No one's buying the new merch.
No one's excited for that team.
Yeah, but it's not about that.
It's about everybody else excited the NFL's back.
Ain't that right, AJ?
Yeah, it is.
I mean, that's a bit concerning for Washington, I feel like.
I hope it filled in later.
I hope there was later rivals.
Carson Wentz, this is what his introduction to the Commanders is.
He probably loves that.
It does explain a lot, too.
What?
New stadium only holds 50,000 people.
That's probably why they're doing it, because they know they're not going to have that many fans.
Used to be a great franchise.
Yeah.
They had diehard fans, too, though.
Oh, yeah.
They used to put pig costumes on.
And go in like 100 degree weather.
Those guys probably loaded up on autographs, though.
Those two guys in the front row.
Yeah, they got every player on the team, signed their ball.
The commander social media team's like, can you guys pack together a little bit?
From this angle here.
They're going to start busting schools in now.
That's awesome.
Yeah, you mentioned that earlier, by the way.
And we had –
I didn't know we had a segment. I'm sorry it's all right a couple segments today three segments today yeah holy
shit a block b block c block that's unbelievable wow look at us wow yeah we did it actually four
because you got to include the uh hold in hold that it's just true all right let's get out of
here huh i appreciate you all so much. AJ, hope you had fun today.
You got a chance to talk to a new-
I mean, come on now.
You guys thought you were burying me.
You thought you set me up.
I didn't know-
No, not at all.
No, not at all.
I just wanted to see what-
And guess what?
All my anecdotal research and evidence that I have for mouthpieces strictly comes from
me and my brain.
I've never tried to research anything.
I've said, you know what?
This works for me.
Glad to see that science backs me up.
Well, I'm glad to see that you took
a stand. You believed in yourself.
I'm taking all the mouthpieces out of my kids'
helmets now, too. Boom. What about their teeth?
Fuck their teeth? Fuck these kids' teeth? We can fix. They can fix
teeth. Most of them still have all their baby teeth, so we're
good. It makes it impossible to breathe.
Can't speak. You gotta speak
when you're playing. It makes you, hey,
maybe safer. It's being able to
communicate hey watch out that guy's gonna kill you then you're now your buddy can hear you oh
wow instead of right then so big dentistry uh-huh yeah the mouthpiece because remember it was being
linked to concussions that's how like yes they got in on the concussion wave remember they say
like your teeth compress down on there and it dissipates the blow and like it does kind of make sense when
you show me the picture of it but then that's all it goes from there no one has any follow-up but
it feels like in every other sport that involves like people being knocked out if your jaw is loose
and it gets hit feels like that's a little bit more devastating. So when you have the mouthpiece in,
you're forced to have a loose jaw.
You're forced to, unless you bite down on it,
but normally your mouth is going to sit a little bit open.
And I think like when you watch, you know,
fists normally go through faces when it's just like a little bit loose.
Yeah, the jaw is always.
It's meh, you know what I mean?
And not that you could stop that from biting down or whatever,
which you would do on a mouthpiece or whatever,
but it makes you sit in an uncomfortable.
I could never get into it.
I didn't grow up in a football community, though.
I grew up in the soccer community.
Then I got into football.
Soccer, I guess there's some weirdos wearing them,
but, like, nobody's wearing them.
And then you get into football.
Yeah, there was.
There's a couple people.
There might be more NBA guys wearing mouthpieces than NFL.
A lot of them. There might be more NBA guys wearing mouthpieces than NFL.
A lot of percentage.
Percentage was.
Yeah.
Yeah. But remember, it used to be forced in the NFL.
College, though.
College.
College.
Oh, yeah.
He definitely is forced in most levels.
Yeah.
And it's all big dentistry.
College.
They used to send us in after warm up to put our hip pads in.
If we didn't have hip pads.
When Dennis.
I heard you ask about the knee pads, by the way.
That's the dumbest thing ever.
He had no answer.
Yeah, he went to the thigh.
He went to the thigh.
Well, you know what?
We had to wear pads.
Big Mike McCarthy, we'd always wear, like on Fridays or Saturdays,
he'd make us wear our pants with pads in them, no shoulder pads on them.
One of the really bad ones.
For a walkthrough?
No, for like our Friday practice, not walkthrough.
We'd like to actually practice a little bit.
Oh, Fast Friday. Oh, Fast Friday.
Yeah, Fast Friday.
So, okay, we want you to wear pants,
and you don't want to wear pants with pads in them,
especially with no shoulder pads.
And he would say, I remember I asked him one time,
he's like, if I lose a guy to a thigh bruise,
I'm never going to forgive myself.
And I said, Coach, if I ever sit out of a game for a thigh bruise,
you can cut me on the spot.
Dr. Allen Sills, he said it would be disabling.
It would be very painful, yeah, that you've got to play through.
Disabling, I think he said.
No, depending on who it is.
Well, I'm just telling you, Dr. Alan Sills,
I'm just telling you what he said,
because as I heard him talking about a contusion,
I thought to myself, okay, I don't know anybody
that's going to play in a position
that could potentially get a thigh contusion
who wouldn't play through a bruised thigh or whatever,
because, you know, oh oh we didn't even ask
didn't even ask about fucking tard all right oh yeah oh geez yeah oh my god
next time next time we do doc talk yeah chat with the cmo of the nfl it feels like we're doing it
once a week now but he did he did avoid your he went right to the yeah thigh talking he wasn't
there though he luckily for him He wasn't there, though.
Luckily for him, he wasn't there to mandate the knee pads to help with concussions because a quarter-inch thick pad on top of somebody's knee is definitely going to help.
It's actually probably going to make somebody swing harder at their knee
because they think it's a weapon because they have a little thing.
Pretty insane he's the first one.
It only started in 2017.
Yeah, that was my last question.
Do they just say, like, how the fuck did we do this without a doctor
yeah how did they not exactly
how did no one come forward
well we didn't want to fucking pay a guy
aren't you just such a genius
in hindsight Jesus
Dr. Alan Seals how much do we pay
we pay you well how much do you get paid
blah blah blah a million
that's why
then fucking Will Smith became a doctor
and now Dr. Alan Seals and we are all thankful he is here that's why. Yeah. Okay. Then fucking Will Smith became a doctor.
And now Dr.
Alan Sills has been,
and we are all thankful he is here.
Yeah.
We are all that,
but that is why we didn't make that decision until 2017.
No,
no more fucking questions like that.
Pretty good gig.
Just moonlighting,
having fun doing brain surgery every once in a while,
bro.
Yeah.
Jeez. That's like Dr.
Myron roll talking about the pressure and the calmness whenever you're a brain surgeon and everything,
because just like literally any mistake is potential life altering.
Millimeters.
I'm happy it's Dr. Howell.
He's sawing through.
You're sawing through people's skulls to get to their brain.
That's a pretty important job.
Oh, the thick skull thing wasn't real, it sounded like.
No, it is.
He said people definitely have thicker skulls than others.
He didn't say we don't know who is more apt to,
who is more prone to concussions, though.
Would you go sit in a quick CT or CAT scan
and just let your brain get scanned for four or five hours
so they can see how thick that fucking cranium is?
I would.
I've gotten emails from the league on different things
where former players can go and get the full run-up of tests
and all that stuff.
I've thought about it.
Shit.
What if they weren't bringing you in there just to see,
this dude's got to have the thickest skull?
Yeah.
Four inches.
He's got a platform now, too, so he's saying, like,
yeah, no mouthpiece, no concussions.
We got to prove this.
What is this anomaly of a head?
You're like, yeah, this is the most Ohio guy of all time.
His skull is.
His brain's the smallest somehow.
Yeah.
But it's protected
so much that he uses more of it it's unbelievable this guy i mean after terminalist i don't know
how many ct scans you're gonna be wanting doing lately oh my gosh that's a great point so the
first two episodes yeah so good so good gosh it's actually awesome it's awesome and it's so good
and it's it feels like it's going i just stopped watching because like
i like me i gotta go to sleep at some point like it was one of those things where i was
going to continue to watch yeah so my wife the first night we watched uh she fell asleep in
the middle of the episode because she was like exhausted or whatever and then the next day i
told her i was like yeah i was up to like two no i didn't i didn't i didn't i didn't move on
because that is a full sticking point because I'm never home to watch anything.
So if I, you know, that's a show we are watching.
But she said, did you watch four episodes?
I was like, no, no, just there was zero chance of me falling asleep after.
I was just, I was putting together the show in my head 15 different ways
on how it would go.
Every episode is like.
That was very propulsive.
Very propulsive.
It gets right into it, too.
We're watching these things 11, 15 at night.
My brain can't do that.
My wife is able to just go to bed.
I'm going to be up until 4 a.m. because of this fucking show
just because it's like...
That was me last night. I had to turn it off. I had to stop
because I was like, I might watch the whole series and just not sleep.
What's that Citizen movie?
Law Abiding Citizen. Boom. I watched that before
a game, Saturday night before a game,
because I thought I would just be able to fall asleep.
Saturday Night Live wasn't good.
Let me turn this thing on.
I was up until 4 a.m.
I'm like, I can't fucking do it.
Can't do it.
I fought through Ambien because I was just so.
That show is awesome.
It is.
It's terminal.
It is.
And it really does.
That's no bullshit.
The first two are awesome.
It kind of just.
You really do it.
David Koresh is in it, too.
Your guy, Ty. He is. Taylor Kits it. David Koresh is in it, too.
Your guy, Todd.
He is.
Taylor Kitsch.
Taylor Kitsch is great.
His brother.
Yeah, his brother.
I always go stand-up right after.
You know, ease into going to bed because you really can't just go to a show like that and try and go to sleep.
Yeah, I try to go over.
I've been bouncing over to Late Night Sports Center.
Oh, okay.
I haven't watched Sports Center in years. But I've been going over to Late Night Sports Center Oh okay I haven't watched Sports Center in years But have been going over
Like I don't watch ESPN
At the house unless it's live sports
Here we watch
It's on air
So I just kind of stick away from it
Sports Center
It was up for an Emmy obviously
They inform me of a lot of shit
I think they still have a very
Real role in society.
As long as they're...
But you do got to seek it out, I think.
Just do the sports.
What else do they do?
Tony, what do you mean?
I mean, breaking down trades and stuff.
Well, that's part of it.
Oh, okay.
All right, you're talking.
Like baseball trades.
That's not what he's talking about. What's he talking about? We know what he's talking about. You not what he's talking about
What's he talking about?
We know what he's talking about
We're not supposed to talk about it
The more we talk about it
The less likely it is to happen
We don't want fanfare
Trades from PGA Tour to live?
Bubba Watson, want to live
Congrats Bubba, probably got another $100 million for his family
Congrats Bubbs
People aren't happy about it. Still not happy about it.
What is Diggs talking about?
He's talking about Brittany Griner.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
How's that going?
Well, we've done it in the past.
We've traded people.
I know.
This is a big part of, like, I think.
Two for one as well.
Prisoners, right?
I mean, this is kind of, this is a massive part of history in this entire thing.
You know, this has happened uh but it is awesome to hear these sports people break down the history of
every trade and you know they broke down the history when we traded humans top five yeah
i didn't know that no everybody just you know there for a bit everybody was a stock market
fucking expert you know there for a bit everybody was a crypto expert yeah there for a bit everybody's
a political expert you know and then now we're at the point where everybody's a goddamn war expert
top 10 prisoner exchange they're breaking down the list today i need to go check that out yeah
they did not do that that's not real that did not happen that is a wild situation that is does involve
sports right because britney griner obviously legendary women's basketball player in the
history of america how tall is she six nine there's no way so she's hanging completely
off any bed she has in that prison for sure life no fun yeah that prison's not built for
someone her height i'm guessing no fun at all I guess she has played in this league for three years now.
Third season.
So they know her over there pretty well.
I'd assume it's just,
we don't know.
I mean,
hopefully who does?
Yeah.
No idea.
But that buddy's on the cover of time.
Who time or some magazine?
I don't know who,
who Ukraine guy, him and his wife. I saw't know. Who? Who? Ukraine guy.
Him and his wife.
I saw he was turning this morning when I woke up.
People weren't happy about that.
Really?
Why?
Me and AJ.
Of course.
Well, people aren't happy about anything,
and we will continue to hopefully make more happiness in the world
with our dumb ass and our sports conversation.
We'll be back manana.
Feel good Friday.
Ooh. I will be calling in tomorrow okay okay you leaving tonight you up for something yeah oh yeah breaking news so doesn't break disney
this is a big deal oh no no can't break it yet okay all right
This is a big deal.
Oh, no, no.
Can't break it yet.
Okay.
All right.
Little tease.
This is a big deal.
Good tease.
Hey, great tease.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Yeah, it was pretty big news coming.
I did say yesterday I'll break news tomorrow.
I want to let you know that the news I'm breaking today is that I'm breaking news next week.
Here we go.
Monday.
All right. Monday.
I mean, that is fucked up of me to do, but also I think it deserves much bigger than just, oh, yeah, fuck, we're breaking news.
Great way to start August.
Boom.
How you doing?
Keep it moving.
Boom.
All right.
Everybody have an incredible night, an incredible day.
See you guys tomorrow.
I'll be calling in tomorrow for, I think I'll be on for a good bit.
AJ will be guiding the program from his house.
Hey, boy, AJ.
Hey, baby, AJ.
Hey. There you go, Hawk. AJ will be guiding the program from his house. Hey, boy, AJ. Hey, baby AJ. Hey.
There you go, Hawk.
I'll be here.
You excited about it now that you're basically a fucking neurosurgeon?
Yeah, I am, but I feel bad for Mitt.
Mitt's going to have to work the – like if I'm – how's he going to work the cameras?
You, wherever you are, me, the boys, everybody.
It's going to be a tough deal.
So I'll just be a FaceTime in just like other people are,
and then he'll just cut to the boys as if they're the boys and your shot would just be this shot i think right okay yeah we got
it aj don't worry that'll be me that's what i'm saying you guys make very difficult things look
easy so mitt i appreciate you yeah mitt has been um that is not easy i can't yeah you know what
that tech did i you know i always i'm always asking the boys i
wish i knew how to just basic edit a basic video like it's tough yeah it's i mean that is not
necessarily what mitt is doing currently two different tasks but all of them very impressive
to do he is literally just a switcher right now like a director would be for any other show
but he has his own thing and has to do it. Him and Zito work hand-in-hand uploading videos into outputs, I believe,
and then output and a preview, preview and a program.
There's a lot, yeah.
And he just kind of got dropped into it because, obviously,
something happened to a member of our team that is super, I mean,
out of nowhere.
And, you know, unfortunately, we miss Foxy.
We hope life is good, buddy.
But, yeah, you've done an incredible job pal
You're getting better even though you're going to fuck up at this forever
You're doing great pal
Doing great man
Because everybody's going to fuck up at your job forever
It is literally a non-perfect position
So we appreciate your hard work pal
Hell yeah thank you
Good hair too the hair's going good
You know you got that thing cut up yesterday by who
Back porch barber Back porch barber.
Back porch barber.
Have a little respect, okay?
That guy is a barbecue.
All right, we're out of here.
See you all so much.
Have an incredible day.
Hey, Summer Samuel, sir.
Hey, here we go.
We'll talk about tomorrow.
I'm feeling good.
I think this is the lightest weight I've been
and maybe the quickest I've felt in some time.
Wow.
Oh, wow.
I mean, so might be a long program on Saturday.
No, it's going to be quick.
The program has been happening.
I am always preparing to be more explosive than the other person.
I'm always expecting the thing to end four seconds into the entire match.
I'm always walking in with a plan that will make me a winner,
just like I was at WrestleMania undefeated in sanctioned matches.
Hell yeah.
So this thing, I'm planning on ending quick,
but I do feel very confident in the place that I've gotten my body to
that if this thing does last a little bit longer,
because he is a tough son of a bitch.
He's insufferable, but, you know,
he is a tough guy,
but are you really that tough whenever,
pew, same foot that can hit
a 124-mile-an-hour soccer ball
hits you right in that dumb head?
Ain't wearing one of them guardian caps either, so.
That's right.
You're going to find out.
We'll get in there.
We'll get in there, but yeah, I feel good.
Thank you, AJ.
Can you find that, can you find the football that vince mcmahon punted
through your lungs and punt it into baron corbin it's still going actually yeah you're right
probably a ball i mean could you ever prepare for something like that is dude perfect gonna be there
are they starting off again i don't think dude perfect's gonna no it's kid rock oh yeah he's
got the song song's called shake don yeah he's riding the penis over the stadium well i mean
after i just hope none of his fans show up or else that ring will get absolutely destroyed dude
perfect still in cutter i think yeah oh yeah oh jeez forgot about it way to go nick hope you're
happy yeah great thursday july 28th. That was Nick.
Tyler and Kobe didn't deserve that.
Maybe they did.
They kind of did.
Any other ones?
What are their names?
Jack.
They call one of them the Purple Hoser.
I know that.
He's got a hose.
They all look the same and sound the same kind.
Cody?
Is there Cody in a Kobe?
Oh, it's Kobe.
Yeah.
There's no Cody.
Purple hoser?
Yeah, they call one of the guys the purple hoser.
He's really funny.
He's got a gun.
For Kobe's ire.
Let's see how B-Y.
These are selling out arenas.
It's Kobe.
It's Kobe Jones.
It's all mine.
It's all mine.
Yeah, I am.
It's Kobe. I mean, all mine. It's Colby.
I mean, it was pretty disheartening that they were in Qatar.
All right.
Listen, dude, perfect.
I got a chance to meet them.
Obviously, OGs on the internet.
Yeah.
Trick shot extraordinaires.
They were very nice to me.
Great guys.
You need to remember that.
I never forget it.
They were spitting on the people that built those stadiums over there?
No, they weren't.
Don't be spitting anywhere over there.
Yeah, seriously.
I can't spit?
No.
Cut your tongue out.
I am excited to see the players, though, that maybe get a little.
Yeah.
Oh, God.
What happened there?
I didn't even thought of that.
You guys spit into your hands and rub it on your head, cool down a little.
It is good for.
Anyways.
Does Cutter have a good team? No, they are fucking dog shit. Yeah, I think they do, actually. I think they did. Might be a surprise to him. your hands and rub it on your head cool down a little it is good for anyways does cutter have
a good team no they are yeah i think they do actually i think they did might be surprised
dude i think they do i thought they were terrible no i think they uh brought in yeah they started
an academy oh really i think yeah it's like a b in every system over there i'm not sure they're
in our bracket though i think they're in our group they're fucked man they're not making it up are
they in our group no i think it's us no iran you making it up. Are they in our group? No, I think it's us. No.
Iran.
Yeah, us, England, Iran, and not.
Is it Canada or no?
No, because we can't be because we're too cold.
Oh, good.
Then, I don't know.
Those are three of them, though.
Like Algeria, maybe.
Who cares?
We're winning.
Exactly. That's right.
Don't matter.
Name was grayless faces opponents.
Dude, perfect.
Did hit that first try, though. Yeah, of course. I know. I saw it. What do you mean? We all saw it. We're back opponents. Dude, perfect. Did hit that first try, though.
Yeah, of course.
I know.
I saw it.
What do you mean?
We all saw it.
We're back tomorrow.
They will be.
I'll be a little bit.
You all are the best.
Next week should be fucking electrifying, as will tomorrow's show.
What will we learn?
Who will we hear more about?
What teams will be propelling to the Super Bowl while other teams are dealing with bullshit?
That's what tomorrow's going to be.
See you then.
Goodbye. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. so Thank you.
