Local news is in decline across Canada, and this is bad news for all of us.
With less local news, noise, rumors, and misinformation fill the void,
and it gets harder to separate truth from fiction.
That's why CBC News is putting more journalists in more places across Canada,
reporting on the ground from where you live,
telling the stories that matter to all of us,
because local news is big news.
Choose news, not noise.
CBC News.
Okay, when I sell my business, I want the best tax and investment advice.
I want to help my kids, and I want to give back to the community.
Ooh, then it's the vacation of a lifetime.
I wonder if my head of office has a forever setting.

of 1%.

We are Master Money over on YouTube.
We're putting out two videos every single week, a fresh comment.
for you guys to check out.
Now today, we're going to be talking about the amazing power of 1%.
And your boy may be sounding like some sort of motivational speaker today because today,
this is a special episode.
This is episode 100 of the Personal Finance Podcast.
And today I'm going to let you in on my little secret.
And let's get real.
I'm here every single week to motivate you guys.
So if I sound like a motivational speaker today, the reason why is I want to motivate
you guys to build wealth every single week.
for your families to build generational wealth because I believe each and every single person
listening to this podcast can build generational wealth.
Wealth isn't something where you have to take away from everybody else.
Wealth is something where you create abundance for everybody.
And that is what this podcast is all about.
We're going to talk about how to build that wealth today.
And today we're going to be talking about something incredibly powerful.
And something that you may not think is truly impactful, but boy, oh boy, is it powerful.
Because see, I'm constantly looking for ways to optimize.
And this is the way that I figured out how to optimize every single thing in my life.
And I've wanted to talk about this topic for a long time.
So getting into this topic is going to be something I'm truly excited about.
And that's why I wanted to save it for episode 100.
So as I look for a bunch of different ways to improve my situation,
my brain begins to associate every single thing with numbers.
So I'm looking for ways to improve my health through.
working out, lifting weights, making sure I get cardio in, to eating right, and making sure
my diet is on track, to getting enough sleep every single day so I can increase productivity.
In addition, I'm looking for the best ways to build wealth, from increasing my income, to
investing my dollars, to building businesses, all of these different things.
And the only way to do some of these things is to optimize goal setting and actually
achieving my goals. So I'm setting up systems so that I can achieve those goals.
and I want to build up skills because the more skills you have,
the more money you can make and the better overall your wealth path can be.
In addition, I want to devote time to my family and hobbies,
and I want to devote more time to building the right habits,
things like reading more or learning as much as I possibly can.
And all of this stuff are the pieces in my life that I'm looking to optimize.
And a lot of you are probably looking at the same pieces
and maybe you have some additional things you want to optimize as well.
See, because what I'm about to talk about today,
it's the most simple concept in the world.
In fact, a child can unlock this discipline, but there's a kick.
And the kick is that this is a tortoise approach.
It's a slow-moving approach.
And it feels like sometimes you're not improving at all.
But guess what?
We're in this game forever.
We're in this wealth-building journey forever.
And because we're in this thing forever,
it makes everything extremely powerful
because everything compounds over time.
And what I like to call this, I like to call this silent success,
where you don't know that you're improving every single day,
but what happens is you look back on your life
and then all of the sudden everything has improved
where it doesn't feel like anything is improving
and then all of a sudden you look back and everything is improved.
And a lot of you have probably felt the same exact situation,
whether it's your wealth, whether it's your health,
whether it's your family life.
It doesn't matter what it is.
If you're looking for ways to optimize
and you're always looking for ways to improve,
you're going to figure out the best ways to do that.
And today, this system, the 1% system is going to teach you
exactly how to do that. If you're struggling to improve with your wealth, if you're struggling
to improve in any situation in your life, you want to increase your income, you want to make more
money, you want to become a better investor, you want to build up your emergency fund. It doesn't
matter what you want to do. This system is going to do it for you. But you have to be patient and
understand this is a long game, my friend. And anybody who tells you that wealth building is a quick
thing that you can get rich quick, tell them to get a vest with a bunch of pockets to grab a big
old stick and take a hike, dude, because there is no get rich quick scheme out there that
works.
So focus on noticing that silent success because it's going to creep up on you.
And if you stick to your plan, it is almost guaranteed to work with this system.
So if you're the guy or gal who likes to read articles about how to get rich quick or six
pack abs in six days, I'll catch you on the flip side.
Because this is not for you.
But if you're willing to stick to a plan and gradually see your results and your skills
developed, then stick around for a while.
Because take this podcast, for example, we're in episode 100.
When we started off with this podcast, the only people listening to this podcast were probably
my mom.
Each day, we tried to get better.
We tried to teach as many people as possible how to build wealth.
That's the entire goal is to teach as many people as possible how to build wealth.
And guess what's happened thus far?
Thus far, we've grown from zero listeners and zero audience whatsoever to well over 300,000 downloads a month.
Now, for us, we want to keep building up so we can teach as many people as possible how to build wealth.
And on a day-to-day level, it doesn't look like you're growing that much.
But when you look backwards, all of a sudden, you can see all the growth that you made.
Year in, year out, month in, month out, day in, day out.
That's exactly what happens every single day.
Our growth, to be honest, is all thanks to you guys.
It's all thanks to you guys sharing this podcast with your friends.
It's all thanks to you guys leaving a five-star review for this podcast.
You guys are in this as much as I am.
We are all in this thing together, and we all worked to grow this so we can teach as many
people as possible how to build wealth.
You guys are doing an amazing thing by sharing this podcast.
You guys are doing an amazing thing by leaving that five-star review because what you're
doing is promoting wealth to people and helping people understand that wealth is an
abundance mentality. Wealth is not scarcity. You're not taking something away from somebody else.
Instead, what we all can do is build wealth. We can all build wealth together. And my goal is to teach
people who are in poverty, how to pull themselves out of that poverty and build wealth for
their family. And they could change their family's tree. My goal is to help the middle class
person who has been struggling for a very long time living paycheck to paycheck, how to change
their situation and build a multi-million dollar portfolio. That's what we're here. We're here.
to do and we're all doing this thing together.
So on a daily level, nothing has changed.
But if you look backwards and look at the difference that we are all making together,
the difference is massive.
And so that's one thing on episode 100 here.
I want to thank each and every one of you who have helped share this podcast or who have
left a review.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart because I appreciate each and every one of you.
And we're going to keep on doing this thing.
We're going to provide as much value as possible for you guys so that we can continue to
grow this movement that we have here.
And that's a great example of what we're.
we're trying to do here because what I have is one focus and one focus every single day.
I want to get one percent better every single day. That's it. One percent. So think about this for a
second. What if you implemented this to the things that matter most to you? A few things are going
to happen. The first one is you're going to gradually improve beyond trying to get things done
quickly. In addition, you're going to reduce your stress level because you're getting better every
single day. Your health is getting better. Your mental health is getting better. Your stress levels
are dropping. You're building up wealth so you don't have that money stress anymore.
Another thing it can happen is if you grow 1% every single day, you're going to grow 365% in
one year. Now this is a massive difference where in one year you're going to see a completely
different person who is 365% better than they were last year. And one of the amazing things
is you're not going to quit because guess why? You're going to see progress. And those marginal
gains, those marginal gains compound over time and it's going to benefit you. It's going to benefit
your life forever because if you get one percent better you're going to be one percent better for
the rest of your life and those gains are going to stick with you for life so as we're talking about
this think of things that you want to focus on where you're going to get one percent better every
single day now one big thing here is i understand you can't get one percent better every single day
and everything take fitness for example when i started to lift weights early on i could barely
lift weights that are extremely light now. But gradually, my strength increased. And if I wanted to
increase my strength 365% per year, there's no way I can do that. It'd be physically impossible
to do that. So at a certain point, I have to adjust my goals when I have a complete plateau. And
with finite growth, with things like this, you have to make adjustments. So another example of
this would be something like cutting back on your expenses. You can only cut back on so many
expenses before you have to fulfill your needs.
You can't just continue to cut back on expenses every single day by 1% or you would literally
not have any food or water.
So you have to make sure that you understand that you're going to have to adjust your goals
once you get to a certain point.
Don't overcommit to things, but adjust your goals as time goes on.
We're going to talk about exactly how to do that today because this system is going
to take you to reach your goals.
I promise you that.
If you follow this system, it will take you to the goals that you want to achieve,
especially when it comes to your money goals.
So let's take a look at Warren Buffett, for example.
Warren Buffett, if you don't know,
we talk about him on this podcast all the time
because in my opinion,
he is the greatest investor of all time.
And what I'm looking at here is I have a chart of Warren Buffett,
and when this episode releases,
I will put this chart on my Instagram at Master Money Co,
and I'll throw it on TikTok as well at Master Money Co,
so that you can see this visually as I'm looking at it here.
But this is a chart of the net worth of Warren Buffett over time.
So when Warren Buffett was 14, he already had $5,000, which at that time, when he was 14,
that's a lot of money because he actually side hustled and did a bunch of things.
At the age of 21, he had $20,000.
And by the age of 26, he had $140,000.
Then by the age of 30, Warren Buffett was already a millionaire when at a time, a million
dollars really was a lot of money.
And he did this through investing in a number of different things.
And as you're going to see over time at 32, 33, he went from $1.4 million to $2.4 million.
Compound interest is working here, and it's absolutely amazing.
Then from age 36, he went to 8 million.
Age 44, he was at 19 million.
Age 52, he was at 376 million.
So 44, he was at 19 million, and at 52, he was at 376 million.
Think about this for a second as I'm saying this.
Warren Buffett is building up his portfolio by more than 1% every single day.
And this is the amazing result of this.
So by age 53, he jumped from 376 million to 620 million.
By age 56, he finally reached a billion at 1.4 billion.
And by age 59, he had 3.8 billion.
But then all of a sudden, compound interest really starts to work for him.
And by age 66, he had 17 billion.
72, he had 36 billion.
And 83, he had 58.5 billion.
Today, Warren Buffett is worth 116.7 billion.
This is starting off as a poor young man.
who really just started to hustle on his own
and started his own side business
when he was a teenager 14 years old.
This is the amazing power
and this is one of the drastic examples
of the amazing power of looking at your goals
and breaking them down by 1%
and being amazingly consistent with your goals.
Consistency is what's going to help you win this here.
And you can utilize these principles of compound interest.
This is why we talk about compound interest so much
because compound interest is part of the principle
of what's going to happen if you improve 1% every day or every week or every month,
all of the sudden those things are going to compound.
This is why compound interest is one of the best things in the world,
because you can compound anything, whether it's your money,
whether it's your fitness level, whether it's your business,
all these things can compound together.
So when you have finite growth potential,
the things that I've talked about where you can't increase the amount of money
that you're saving every single month because you only have so much income,
or you can't lift more weight because you can only lift so much.
weight as a human being. When you have that finite growth potential, you need to change your goals
from 1% per day to different chunks of time. So maybe it's 1% a week. Maybe it's 1% a month. Maybe it's 1% a
quarter biannually or maybe 1% a year. And all of these examples are the way that you break this
out further if you have these finite goals. But as we talked about earlier, the compound effect of this
is massive. Because the compounding effect that you're going to see as you do this over time and
become laser focused on finding ways to make things more valuable is going to change everything for you.
See, because early on, a lot of people tend to quit because they don't see results early on.
But if you stay laser focused, if you're looking at your goals and making sure that you consistently day in and day out do this,
it's going to absolutely change everything for you.
So if you're thinking about this to yourself and you're saying to yourself, hey, I don't know how to do this.
I don't know how to get started right away.
Here's a couple of things that you could do right now.
And then we're going to get into a million things that you can do to start improving by 1% every week.
day, month, depending on what it is.
So how can you do this right now?
The first thing that you can do is have a selective attention span.
So what I mean by that is you want to cut out everything that's negative
and you want to add in everything that's positive.
So for me, I have a selective attention span where I cut out anything news related whatsoever.
I don't want to consume any news that is negative in my life.
In addition, I cut out all the negativity and negative people in my life.
I cut out unmotivated people.
And the things I do pay attention to are things like my family.
and personal growth and wealth building.
All of these things are what I focus on.
So pay attention to what you're paying attention to.
Because it's incredibly important to do that
so that you're in the right mindset
to do this day in and day out
because you have to continue to want to do this day in and day out
every single day.
And you can read the book Atomic Habits by James Clear.
It's one of the best books out there.
And he talks about the amazing value of 1%
and getting 1% better every single day.
And that is truly how you build the lifestyle you want.
I remember when I needed to hire someone fast, but finding the right person quickly felt impossible.
And if you've ever been there, you know how stressful this can be. That's where Indeed comes in.

So lately, I've been noticing how fast things are changing at home.
The kids are growing like crazy, clothes don't fit anymore, and routines are changing.
And it just hits you.
Life is expanding.
And when your life grows, your responsibility grows with it.
That's something I've been thinking about more this spring, making sure the safety net we
have in place actually matches the life that we're building.
And that's where PolicyGenius comes in.
PolicyGenius isn't an insurance company.
They're an online marketplace that helps you compare life insurance quotes from some of the top insurers in America, all in one place for free.

So they help you find the right coverage for your situation without all the guesswork.

Amazon presents Jeff versus Taco Truck Salsa, whether it's Verde, Roja, or the orange one.
For Jeff, trying any salsa is like playing Russian roulette with a flamethrower.
Luckily, Jeff saved with Amazon and stocked up on antacids, ginger tea, and milk.
Habiniero? More like Habinier, yes. Save the everyday with Amazon.
There's more to life than finding the perfect car. But finding the perfect car
can help you get the most out of life. Like the SUV that handles everything from drop off
to off road, and the car that hulls groceries and hockey teams, or the van that's gone from
just practical to practically family.
Whatever you want, wherever you're going.

Canada's car marketplace.
Now what we're going to get into here is a bunch of ways where you can improve by
1% to give you a ton of ideas.
If some of these are things that you want to do,
I would suggest you write them down and you're going to put a plan together.
And what I'm going to do is I'm going to give you guys a spreadsheet
because one of the biggest things you have to do when you're setting these goals up
is you have to become laser focused on these goals.
And one of the best ways to do that is to actually track it on a physical spreadsheet.
Or you could do something like Ryan Paneda does with The Wealthy Way.
And if you haven't heard the episode with Ryan Paneda,
at the end, he's talking about his project called The Wealthy Way,
where he has something called The Wealthy Way Planner that's free.
And what that does is it's a way he just checks a box every time he accomplishes his goal for that day.
It allows him to progress forward.
I do the same exact thing.
What I utilize is a spreadsheet.
I'll get it away to you guys for free.
Check out the show notes for the link for it if you want it.
And the spreadsheet, what I do is I say,
hey, here's how many times I want to work out this week.
Here's how many books I want to read this week.
Here's how much time I want to spend on figuring out new wealth building principles.
And what I do is I go through each of those things.
Each and every day I look at this spreadsheet and it tells me if I'm on track or not.
And if I do it that day, then I put an X.
And at the end of the week, I just review that spreadsheet
to say, hey, did I progress in these areas that I wanted to progress in?
If not, I need to review why that is and maybe adjust the way that I'm trying to progress
1% every single day and maybe make it weekly or monthly or whatever else.
And then in addition, what I do is make sure that those goals are met so that I'm moving
forward every single day.
Now, here are some things that you can work on.
We're going to break these up into categories.
So let's say, for example, you want to progress in your career.
Now, one of the biggest things that you do to progress in your career is to increase
your income at your job.
And we wrote an e-book on exactly how to do that.
So if you want to check that out,
it's in the show notes as well.
What we're talking about here, though,
is negotiating your salary or asking for a raise.
So maybe you want to get a raise
because you want to increase your income,
which is the biggest catapult to building wealth.
If you want to build tremendous amount of wealth,
you want to increase your income
and focus the majority of your time
on increasing that income.
So how can you do that in your career?
One thing you could do is increase your productivity
by 1% every single day
or improve your company.
meeting efficiency by 1% every single day.
Or improve your company's quarterly results by 1% every quarter.
Or increase your business's revenue by 1% every month if you have a business.
Or increase your income by 1% every month.
Or increase your clients by 1% every week.
This is something that you can do where you're using the 1% principle
to progress in your career every single day.
Or you can take a different route and you can extend your career education.
So maybe you read more business books that are surrounding the career you're in.
I'll tell you what, I've learned so much more from reading business books than going to business school.
It's incredible how much more I've learned from books than from actually going to college.
Or you can take an additional classes and certifications that are in your field.
Maybe you're a nurse and you can take additional nursing certification so that you can get paid more.
Maybe you're a plumber and you can take additional plumbing certification so you can make more per hour.
Or you can go back to college and take MBA classes or go to college so that you can increase the amount of money that you make every single year.
So career education is another way to increase by 1% every single day.
Now, this is some of the big stuff because increasing your income at your job is the first place that you want to increase your income.
But let's say, for example, you want to go the other route and you want to look at your personal finance.
Well, one place to look at that is if you're in debt, one of the best ways to do this is to get out of debt.
So maybe you pay 1% more towards your debt every single week or every single month.
So you can get that debt paid down because high interest debt is a pants on fire emergency.
Now, what is high interest debt?
We classify it here as anything above 5% is an emergency when it comes to paying down debt.
Or maybe you make a debt plan so that you can pay that debt down faster.
And we're going to talk about that in our free course.
So sign up for our free debt course while leaving a link down below so that you can check that out and have that available to you.
Or you can improve your credit score.
So paying down your debt helps you improve your credit score.
Improving your credit score will save you six figures over the course of your lifetime.
We have an episode talking about that.
I'll link it up in the show notes.
where you can do that and ensure that you can save over six figures over the course of your lifetime
if you have better credit score if you have bad credit right now.
Or maybe it's refinancing your mortgage because you have a high interest rate.
Or you're taking advantage of a 0% APR balance credit card where you're transferring over some debt over to a credit card,
high interest debt that has maybe 15, 20% on a credit card and you transfer it over to a low interest credit card
or a 0% credit card to save that interest rate on your debt.
Or maybe you want to focus on saving.
So maybe you want to increase your savings rate,
by 1% each and every month.
And at the end of the year,
if you increase your savings rate
by 1% each and every single month,
you're going to save 12% more by the end of the year.
This is absolutely the best way to save more money.
It's not trying to rip the whole Band-Aid off
unless you are motivated enough to do that.
But the best way to do it is to do it gradually
so you don't feel the pain.
In two years, if you did this in two years,
you'd be saving 25% of your income,
which is where we recommend that you at least try to start.
Now, in a lot of situations, that's tough.
But if you do this slowly over the course of two years,
and then you eventually start to save 24% of your income,
all of the sudden what you're looking at here
is you're looking at building a tremendous amount of wealth
and you're going to be able to retire that much faster
because you did that.
Or maybe you're trying to save for multiple savings goals.
We have an episode we just did talking about that,
so I will leak that up in the show notes as well.
So you want to increase the amount that you're saving for a house
or maybe a wedding or a car
or that dream vacation that you've wanted to have for your mental health.
All of these are amazing goals to have for your savings.
but increasing that amount by 1% every month or 1% every other month
is going to make a tremendous difference over the course of that savings goal.
Or maybe you just want to save more money overall,
so you want to cut out the things that don't bring you value.
Because what we talk about here on this podcast is if you want to save more money,
what you want to do is look at everything that you spend money on,
and if something you spend money on doesn't bring you value, cut it out.
So you can spend lavishly on the things that do bring you value.
So if you love to go on vacation but don't really care about having a family,
fancy car, get rid of the fancy car, get a normal car, and go on more vacations with the excess money.
This is the cheat code with money that a lot of people just don't utilize because spending money
and your dollars on the things that you value means that you're going to enjoy life more.
And in addition, you're going to be doing the things that you love every single day and you don't
have to be spending money on things you really don't care about.
A lot of people spend money on things they really don't care about to try to impress other people
instead of just spending their dollars on the things that bring them value.
And that's exactly what you should be doing with your money.
So figuring out what those priorities are, maybe help you to get 1% better every single day with your savings rate.
This is the incredible power of doing this.
It's figuring these things out.
Or maybe you want to increase your safety net and your emergency fund.
So you want to increase the amount that you send your emergency fund by 1% every single month.
That's 12% additional every single year.
So you can fund up that emergency fund.
So if something happens in life, which it will eventually, then you can go ahead and have the money just.
There. And having the money there is the most stress-free thing that you can have in your life.
It's absolutely amazing to have the money just there. Or maybe you want to save your tax refund
towards your emergency fund. Or you get extra cash, maybe from a bonus or unexpected gifts,
and you could put that towards your emergency fund. See, these are some of the amazing things that
you can do by getting 1% better every day. Focusing on getting 1% better in the category you
want to focus on so that you can get better at it every single day. Or maybe you want to focus on the
big three. You want to reduce your housing expenses so we improve your insulation or you change your light
bulbs out to LED. You're reducing your housing expenses over time. Or you downsize your house because
your kids are all grown up. They've gone to college and all of a sudden now what you want to do
is you need to downsize and you can sell your house, especially right now, for a fortune and then you
can have that extra money to put towards what you want to do in life. Or maybe you want to
reduce your transportation cost. And we're at a very unique time right now.
where a lot of people have used cars that are the same price as new cars.
And maybe this is the time where you can reduce your transportation cost.
And if you haven't listened to our episodes on how we talk about buying vehicles and buying cars,
check them out below.
We have two of them that we've utilized.
First one is how much to spend on buying cars.
And the second one is how you can actually have a free car for life.
And the way you do that, spoiler alert is that you buy assets, things like rental properties.
And the way you do that, spoiler alert, is you buy assets,
things like rental properties where the cash flow from that rental property will pay for your car payment every single month.
This is the amazing hack of wealth where you can have a free car for life if you do something like that.
Or maybe you want to evaluate your investing, where you want to eliminate fees,
or increase the amount that you invest every single month by 1% every single week or month.
Or you want to increase the amount that you're sending to your 401k or your Roth IRA by 1% every single month.
This is how you build it up to the point that you want to get to is you increase it.
it slowly and gradually.
And over a year or two, all of a sudden,
you're hitting your goals and you're going to retire that much faster.
Now, if you're trying to pursue fire, you want to retire in 10 years,
you got to rip that band-aid off and do it right now.
But if you're not going for that goal,
then you can do some of these things and change your life forever
just by gradually doing it and you won't feel the pain.
If you're prone to giving up when things get hard,
especially with your money, then doing this slowly and gradually over time
is the best way to do it.
Or maybe you want to increase the amount that you know about investing.
you're listening to more investing podcast like this one,
or you're reading more books about investing.
There's so many different things that you can do to increase it by 1%.
Or maybe you're looking to get more time back,
more time with your family,
or doing more of what you love.
So the way you do that is build out better systems.
You get 1% better every single day at time management.
Maybe you're starting to batch things together.
The way I do it is I batch tasks together each and every day
so that I'm doing the same thing and I get them done faster.
or you can do time blocking.
In our episode with Jordan Harbinger,
he talks about how he time blocks every single day
where every hour of his day is mapped out
so he can have more time with his family.
And he said he gets two times the amount done
that a normal person does in the same eight-hour day.
Or maybe you want to give more money to the causes you love.
Maybe you want to give 1% more to causes you love.
Or you want to spend 1% more time every single month
giving back to causes in your area.
These are amazing goals to help you out with that.
Or maybe you want to evaluate your health care
and you want to start contributing to an HSA.
We have an entire episode on the amazing power of the HSA.
I would definitely check that out if you can.
Or you can evaluate your plan every single year.
See where you can save on that
because you can save a tremendous amount of money
doing stuff like that.
Or you want to work on your personal development
where you want to learn more.
So you want to spend 1% more of your time
with your family every week.
Or you want to read 1% more,
give 1% more, get 1% more back every single day.
These are amazing goals to have.
These are amazing ways to look at the 1% rule.
But think about ways that you want to do this in your own life.
Because as we're wrapping this episode up,
what I want you guys to figure out
is write down your goals of exactly how you want to do this in your own life.
Because focusing on a few of these at a time
is going to compound over the time
and then all of a sudden you get comfortable with it.
And then now you can add more things in over time
that you can focus on getting 1% better every single day
and all of a sudden your life is completely changed.
It's completely turned around by you doing this.
And this is why it is so incredibly important
to focus on things like this.
And I'm sorry this episode sounds preachy.
It sounds motivational.
But this is something that is absolutely life-changing for most people.
It's the small incremental differences that will absolutely change everything for you.
So listen, I hope this inspired you.
I hope you got value out of this episode because this is the way, my friends,
this is the way to change everything in your own personal life.
And if you've been struggling for a long time, this is the exact way to turn it around.
