Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, everybody, Peter Zines here. I am above Glendue Bay at Lake Wanaka in southern New Zealand, and today we're talking a little bit about El Salvador's new drug mega-prison. Now, there's a lot going in here, there's a lot of ideology in all sides, and the ideas that these people who traffic drugs and run the gangs deserve to be locked up, throw away the key. Number one, when you put a lot of people in a stressful situation, they tend to form their own hierarchies and their own bonds.
Starting point is 00:00:30 where we get ethnicities. It can be a little darker like the Russian or the Chinese. So we're actually encouraging the rival gangs here to kind of form a mega gang. And then second, this is El Salvador. This is a country that had a dictatorial military junta. During the 1980s, it killed tens of thousands of their own people. And now we're taking some of those violent people who have come from this sort of system and putting them all in a maximum security place where we're encouraging them to bond with one another. This is a country of only a few million people.
Starting point is 00:00:58 and so they are basically generating the political party of the future. El Salvador at this point has not been a narco state. Now it will be. All right, that's it for me. See you guys next time.
