Sup you beautiful bastards, hope you're having a fantastic Tuesday.
Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco show and let's just jump into it.
The first thing we're gonna talk about today is the controversy and backlash against Dunkin Donuts,
which I'm gonna keep calling Dunkin Donuts. I know they're doing the whole name change where it's just Dunkin.
The name change doesn't matter, but it's just too new and weird.
It feels like when I'm saying it that I'm talking about a guy named Dunkin, not a donut establishment.
But that said, the reason we're talking about them is what happened at a Syracuse Dunkin' Donuts
over the weekend.
On Sunday, there was a video posted
where a Syracuse Dunkin' Donuts employee
was seen dumping a pitcher of water
onto a man with his head down,
who has now been identified as Jeremy Dufresne.
And to start things off, I'll just let you watch the video.
You wanna sleep?
Yo, you're gonna fall asleep.
It's time to let you want to sleep.
How many times I got to tell you to stop sleeping in here, my a**hole?
You're here all day.
You have enough time, man.
How many times have customers and the people going to tell you to stop sleeping in here?
It was an accident.
No, it was an accident, bro.
You know I'm not playing with you.
I ain't going to call the cops on you like I said.
You're going to get out of here.
Yo, you got a bad phone on you. You got a not playing with you. I ain't gonna call the cops on you like I said. You gonna get out of here. You're gonna get out of here. I'm gonna pour that water out of your
like, you're shy of food, God.
So the video was taken, put online,
it ends up going viral,
garnering over 42,000 shares on Facebook.
Following that, there were calls for a boycott of the store,
for the employees to be fired.
On Monday, you had Alameen Muhammad,
who runs the homeless outreach, We Rise Above the Streets,
confronting the store manager
and leading a protest of around 20 people.
Some holding signs, reading homeless lives matter,
homeless are human.
We also saw the owner of the Dunkin' Donuts franchise,
Kimberly Wollack saying in a statement,
"'We were extremely disturbed by the behavior
"'of our employees captured in the video.
"'It not only violated our written policies,
"'but goes against our core values as an organization,
"'which include creating a welcoming
"'and hospitable environment
"'and treating everyone with dignity and respect.
"'The employees involved in the incident have been terminated,
and we will be contacting the individual in the video to apologize for the negative experience.
And regarding that victim, we've learned more about him since the video was posted.
Reportedly, Dufresne sleeps outside most nights and has schizophrenia.
Also, as far as why he was there, he said that he sometimes goes to Dunkin' Donuts to charge his phone in order to call his mother,
which he does every night.
And he said on the night that the video was taken, he wasn't sleeping, he just had his head down on his hands
while he was waiting for his phone to charge.
And he also said he was surprised
when the employee poured water on him
since they usually treated him kindly,
sometimes even giving him food and drinks.
And regarding the worker that did this to him,
Dufresne said he probably had some personal problems
of his own and needed someone to talk to.
And he took it out on someone else like me.
Additionally, with this situation,
we saw a GoFundMe started for Dufresne.
It appears to have been started by the same person
that posted the video.
It has quickly surpassed its $150 goal.
And as of recording this video, it has passed $12,000.
So at the very least, it appears that we have this kind
of good silver lining to an otherwise shitty situation.
And with like the good and the bad
that the internet can provide,
I'm happy the good that was provided here.
Because really without this video and the internet,
it's just another day where a shitty person
did a shitty thing to someone that was down on their luck.
And especially with homeless people,
there are a lot of people
that don't even look at them as people.
And so it's nice to see from this story spreading
that humanity hasn't been lost
and people reached out to help.
And let's talk about why since Saturday night,
Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson have been in the news.
If you don't know the comedian and the singer,
they're currently engaged.
And on this last Saturday Night Live,
Pete Davidson was joking about their relationship,
and at one point he said this.
Yeah, last night I switched her birth control with Tic Tacs.
No, I believe in us and all.
But you know, I just wanna like make sure
that she can't go anywhere.
And what followed was a lot of disbelief and anger.
Marissa Cabas tweeting,
Pete Davidson just joked about switching Ariana's birth control with Tic Tacs, really?
Francesca Ramsey tweeting,
Reproductive coercion is a form of domestic violence.
And then what followed were all these articles that popped up,
and as far as my personal takeaway from it,
I am not one of the people offended by this.
I personally took it as a harmless joke,
the joke being that it would be such a ridiculous, horrible thing to do.
Pete Davidson making self-deprecating jokes about himself, this kind of is a dark humor joke about how much Ariana Grande is better than him.
And that's him joking about the relationship, although in a public setting, and it's kind of like how you would, in the same vein of you joking about Instagram models poking holes in NBA players' condoms.
Right, and I'm not saying that doing those things is okay. Anyone that would actually swap out someone's birth control
or poke a hole in a condom, monster, horrible, scary person.
But with this specific Pete Davidson moment,
I just see it as a harmless joke.
He's not doing, endorsing, or normalizing.
It's dark humor.
And if you're not familiar with Davidson's brand of humor,
it's kind of dark humor, shock jock,
nothing is sacred kind of humor.
For example, the Pete Davidson story
that was in the news before this.
He was on Howard Stern, he was talking about
how he lasts longer during sex, and he said,
"'I was just thinking of my dad being burned alive.
"'That's what I do.
"'I just think of my dad seeing that fire
"'coming right towards me.'"
And if you're unfamiliar, Davidson's father
was a firefighter that died on 9-11.
And so I personally see that joke as his dark humor way
of dealing with his father's death.
And then with the Ariana Grande joke,
which I'm not saying those are apple to apple jokes. I feel like that's his as his dark humor way of dealing with his father's death. And then with the Ariana Grande joke, which I'm not saying those are apple-to-apple jokes.
I feel like that's his kind of dark comedy way of joking past people saying that he is garbage compared to Ariana Grande.
But the longer the relationship goes, the more he is associated with being her fiancé than him as an individual.
To the point that when I was looking up clips to check on Pete Davidson jokes,
in a comedy clip where she is not mentioned on the Comedy Central stand-up YouTube channel
They use the tags Ariana Grande Pete Davidson Ariana Grande boyfriend. And of course keep in mind. This is my opinion
This is the PDS. It's the show my opinion then I pass the question off to you and you don't have to agree or disagree
With me, but I want to know what do you think about this?
But also with this story while I personally like it once again, I'm not against Pete Davidson here
I do want to take this opportunity say, if you are in a relationship where you're with someone
that you think is tampering with your birth control,
they're trying to pressure you not to take it,
there are resources out there for you,
like the National Domestic Hotline.
You can go to hotline.org, they have 24 seven online chat,
because no, the actual doing the stuff
that is joked about, horrible.
But the joking, once again, my opinion, not.
Then, in a story I meant to cover last week,
but the news cycle kinda just railroaded over my plans,
according to preliminary data from the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention,
80,000 people died from the flu last season.
And that's an incredibly large number.
According to CDC.gov, in recent years,
influenza-associated deaths in the US
ranged from a low of 12,000 to a high of 56,000.
Now, as far as why we saw such a huge spike
as the H3N2 virus, and that specific flu virus
is reportedly harder to prevent with the flu vaccine.
And last year, according to a study,
the vaccine only had a combined effectiveness
of around 33%.
But still, even with all of that said,
consider this your friendly reminder to get a flu shot.
Even if this year's flu vaccine,
the effectiveness rate against H3N2 is not stellar,
it will offer you better protections against the other flu viruses that are out there right now,
and according to the AP, health officials have said that the flu that has been detected is a
milder strain and early signs are that the vaccine is shaping up to be a good match. But then also
adding, we don't know what's going to happen, but we're seeing more encouraging signs than we were
early last year. But ultimately where I want to end this story is just to get out into the world,
it is better to be safe than sorry.
If you've not gotten your flu shot yet, get it.
And it's not just me saying that,
it is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
saying anyone over six months old, get it.
If you have most any insurance,
there is a place where you can get your flu shots for free.
Additionally, the county health departments
will give out free flu shots to the elderly and children,
sometimes even giving it out to just regular adults.
Or if you just have no coverage
and there is no free place near you,
you can go to a place like a CVS
where it's gonna cost you around $40.
Or, and this is, I don't know if this is a secret,
if you go to Costco, members and non-members
only have to pay $19.99.
And I guess really with that,
the final note of this story is
I've given you the information,
I've given you the options,
and now if you act on it,
you get the flu shot and you live.
Whereas in another timeline where you did not watch
the Philip DeFranco show, you did not,
that means that I'm a hero in both timelines,

And two, according to reports,
they're going to be putting out an interactive episode.
And oh my God, 12-year-old me is so excited. The only books I ever got end of the year. And two, according to reports, they're going to be putting out an interactive episode. And oh my God, 12 year old me is so excited.
The only books I ever got out of the school library
were Choose Your Own Adventure books.
Well, those and the Hardy Boys, but mainly those.
And if you wanna see the full versions of everything
I just shared, the secret link of the day,
really anything at all,
links as always are in the description down below.
And then let's talk about the massive news
around Amazon today.
And as you might recall on this show,
in the past we've talked about Amazon workers
saying they're not paid enough, the treatment's poor.
In the political world, we've also seen politicians
like Bernie Sanders firing shots at Amazon,
asking current and former Amazon employees
to share their experiences.
Regarding Amazon saying,
"'The taxpayers in this country should not be subsidizing
"'a guy who's worth $150 billion,
"'whose wealth is increasing by $260 million
"'every single day.
"'That is insane.
"'He has enough money to pay his workers a living wage.
He does not need corporate welfare.
And our goal is to see that Bezos
pays his workers a living wage.
And he there of course is talking about Jeff Bezos,
who is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Amazon,
also the richest man in the world.
But with all of that said, the big news today,
the reason we're talking about this today
is because Amazon announced they are raising
the US minimum wage for Amazon employees to $15 an hour.
And this is massive news, not only because it's going to have an impact on 350,000 US workers,
that including 250,000 standard and 100,000 that are hired for the holidays,
and not only because their UK employees will be paid £9.5 minimum,
but because when you have a company that is just so incredibly massive, like Amazon is,
and they make a massive change like this, we may see a ripple effect that affects other businesses and the thing is according to the statement
It appears that is exactly what Jeff Bezos wants to do and keep in mind
This could just be PR but in the statement
He said we listen to our critics thought hard about what we wanted to do and decided we want to leave
We're excited about this change and encourage our competitors and other large employers to join us. And in addition to this, it appears that one of their new
goals is to change the federal minimum wage. In that same press release, you had Jay Carney, the senior VP of Amazon Global Corporate Affairs,
saying, we will be working to gain congressional support for an increase in the federal minimum wage. The current rate of
$7.25 was set nearly a decade ago, and adding, we intend to advocate for a minimum wage increase that will have a profound impact on
the lives of tens of millions of people and families across this country. And following this announcement, And adding,
And following this announcement, we saw Bernie Sanders praising Amazon and Bezos, tweeting,
And here's what I'll say as far as my personal takeaway.
With a situation like this, I think it would be very easy
for me to be incredibly cynical and go, you know what,
they were under a lot of scrutiny,
people were criticizing them, they thought,
this is a good PR move, let's just make this change.
And the thing is, yeah, this could be
a completely soulless move, it's all about
trying to get that good PR.
But also on that note, the way that they are making
this change is meaningful.
While Bezos is saying we're leading the charge,
there are other companies that have announced a $15 change.
Reportedly, you have Target planning to go to $15,
but that is expected to go in 2020.
Back in August, you had Disney announcing
that they were raising their minimum wage to 15 by 2021.
And Disney, like a lot of other companies,
when they talk about how their employees are paid,
has a long-term rollout plan to increase by $1 each year.
Amazon here is cutting straight to the chase
right before holiday season.
This goes into effect November 1st.
And a big thing to note is all of this is happening
in an environment where people can say that they care
where their stuff comes from, most don't.
And we don't have to use some disconnected comparison.
One of the stories we covered this year during Prime Day
was that you had Amazon employees boycotting
because of bad working conditions.
And it didn't change a damn thing,
Amazon still broke sales records.
And so I personally commend Amazon and Jeff Bezos
for making this change.
Then let's talk about a story that really kind of fell off
the radar for a lot of people,
thanks to the Kavanaugh hearings.
You may remember that over the summer,
there was a ton of coverage of undocumented migrant children
coming into the United States.
And this is in large part because of an announcement
by Attorney General Jeff Sessions,
saying that there would be a zero tolerance policy
for undocumented immigrants crossing into the United States.
That led to adults who crossed the border with their children being separated from their kids while they were detained and went through the legal process.
This was a massive move because before, federal authorities usually opted to release entire families from detention rather than separating them and keeping the parents detained.
So this policy and move received major backlash, eventually led to a judge ordering the government officials to reunite nearly 3,000 children with their families.
It also led to President Trump signing an executive order mandating that families be kept together.
But despite those last changes in policy, we've recently learned that the number of detained migrant children has actually increased.
Last month, the New York Times released an article based on a report submitted to members of Congress.
And that report found that even though hundreds of migrant children have been released from custody and reunited with their families,
the number of children held in federally contracted shelters has skyrocketed to 12,800.
That is the highest number ever recorded.
I mean, just to give you a little perspective here,
if we just go back to last year, in May of 2017,
there were only 2,400 children in custody.
We're looking at five times
what we were looking at last year.
And reportedly, the vast majority of these children
crossed the border alone without their parents,
many of them teenagers from Central America,
in particular, Guatemala.
Also connected to the high number of children, reportedly since May, shelter capacity has approached nearly 90%.
In comparison, it was at 30% a year ago.
And according to Mark Greenberg, who is the former head of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families,
the closer they get to 100%, the less ability they will have to address anything unforeseen.
And adding, even if there's not a sudden influx, they will be running out of capacity soon unless something changes.
And so the question becomes,
why are we seeing such high numbers here?
Why are we so close to the capacity?
And so if you're like me,
the first thing you think is,
well, okay, maybe more child migrants
are crossing the border.
But according to the report we're talking about today,
the number of crossings is roughly the same as years past.
And according to the Times,
the reason why so many of these shelters are a capacity
is that fewer children are being released to sponsors,
such as extended family members or friends.
And this appears to be partly because many sponsors who may be undocumented themselves
are scared to step forward and out themselves to authorities to sponsor unaccompanied kids.
And for the ones that do step forward because of the new policy put in place by the Trump administration in June,
they and all adult members of their household have to wait weeks or even months to be fingerprinted and vetted by authorities.
And regarding this, you had Evelyn Stauffer, a press secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services,
saying this is to ensure the children's safety, saying children who enter
the country illegally are at high risk for exploitation
by traffickers and smugglers.
And so because the fingerprinting process takes so long,
monthly releases of children have dropped
by two-thirds since last year.
And all of this buildup brings us to today.
A new report that came out this week
and claims to have found that hundreds of migrant children
are being moved from their shelters
to what is being described as a tent city in Tornillo, Texas.
And the facility we're talking about here is an emergency shelter surrounded by chain-link fence and barbed wire that contains bunk bed style housing.
According to the report, it was only meant to temporarily house up to 400 people when it opened in June.
But since then, it's reportedly been expanded and can house 3,800 people.
It's expected to be operational at least through the end of the year.
Also, according to the report, more than 1,600 children have been moved to Tornillo since June.
But also, the number of children that have been moved to the facility, more than 1600 children have been moved to Tornillo since June. But also the number of children that have been moved
to the facility isn't really surprising.
In fact, the administration announced last month
that they would be tripling the size of the tent city.
But with this report, we're now learning the details
of how that process works.
According to the report, there were several shelter workers
who spoke with them anonymously for fear of being fired.
And they said the children are moved to the shelter
in the middle of the night.
They're usually given very little notice
that they're going to be moved.
And this is reportedly in order to prevent escape attempts.
Also, according to the reports,
there are major differences in the shelters
that these children are coming from
in the emergency tent facility in Tornillo.
For one, state child welfare agencies
license and monitor more permanent shelters
and have strict requirements regarding education,
safety, and the training and hiring of staff.
Children in those shelters are also required
to receive regular school and have access to attorneys
who can help them with their immigration cases.
But according to the report,
the tent facility in Tornillo is not overseen by any state agency
and is only regulated with loose guidelines implemented by the Department of Health and Human Services.
And with those guidelines, you have differences like it doesn't require the children to be educated at the facility.
Instead, the children are just given workbooks that they do not have to complete.
And regarding legal services for these children in Tornillo, it is limited.
And so then you might have the question of, well, why are these kids being moved if they're already in shelters?
Well, reportedly, many of the more permanent shelters are now close to overflowing.
And so the administration has decided to make room for new arrivals by sending children usually 13 to 17 years old
who have been in the US longer, who are closer to being released as sponsors to the Tornillo facility.
And while the children are only supposed to be in the facility for a short period of time,
the average length of time that the children are spending in custody has doubled from 34 days to 59 days over the past year.
And those numbers are coming from the Department
of Health and Human Services.
Also in addition to this,
according to Democratic Representative Rosa DeLauro,
the cost of keeping a child in the Tornillo facility
is $750 a day, which is three times the amount
it would cost in a typical shelter.
And according to DeLauro, these facilities, quote,
"'Are flying in the face of child welfare
"'and we're doing it by design.
"'You drive up the cost and you prolong the trauma
"'on these children.'"
Now on the other side of this, you have Health and Human Services arguing that the Tornillo facility is safe
and it has climate-controlled canvas tents. Additionally saying they offer a full range of services including recreational and educational activities.
You also have members of Congress who have toured the Tornillo facilities saying that the conditions are good, that the children have access to food, showers,
medical care, they're allowed two 10-minute phone calls each week.
However, you have Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro saying it goes a little bit deeper
than that.
And also seemingly trying not to villainize the employees that are around these children.
Saying,
It's clear that the staff are doing their best to care for the kids.
Still, the fact that they're out here in 105 degree weather in the desert is a symptom
and I think a moral failing on behalf of the United States government.
And so that's where we are right now.
It will be interesting to see how this situation develops.
And I do want to pass a question off to you. Do you agree with that last quote?
Do you find this to be a moral failing of the United States?
Also, how do you feel about this tent city due to the overcrowding? And really any and all thoughts here
I'd love to hear from you in those comments down below. And that's where I'm going to end today's show.
And remember with this show, I also want it to be a conversation whether it be between you and I or you guys together.
