Stop the steal! Stop the steal!
Every time I take a few weeks off,
as if the world needs my public disappointment
to somehow stay on the tracks.
But with that said,
welcome back to the Philip DeFranco Show.
It is Monday, January 11th, 2021.
And let's just jump into the news of the day
so you can get back to yours.
To start things off, let's jump into some quickie news
before we get to the heavy and deep stuff.
So first thing up, Bitcoin.
If over the last week you got yourself some Bitcoin
for the first time, you now understand the word volatility.
It can be good times and bad times.
For example, if you're one of the people
that bought back into Bitcoin back in March
when it was just $5,000 or on December 14th-ish
where it was just under 20,000,
you were ecstatic over the weekend
when Bitcoin surpassed $40,000.
But if you bought in at that $40,000,
you are probably less than ecstatic that today,
and this, once again, volatility,
could be higher or lower as of recording, it is at $32,500. But all that said, and this once again, volatility could be higher or lower as of recording,
it is at $32,500.
But all that said, it will be fascinating
to see where it goes from today to December 31st, 2021.
Boom or bust, time will tell.
Then in creator news over the past few days,
it's actually been pretty light,
which is I think in part why we saw so many people
click baiting that one of the massive creators
on the platform right now,
Corpse Husband was quitting.
I watched the clips,
in no way did that seem like the situation.
It sounded like he was talking about his chronic illness
and as far as what his plans were,
as far as his life in general,
moving forward realistically.
Which is why after we saw a number of those videos go viral,
we saw Corpse take Twitter to say,
"'Lots of headlines about me quitting YouTube
and the clips they're all using.
I was talking about how I realistically see the longer term.
I'm not imminently quitting anything. Thank you.'"
But the unfortunate thing is I believe
that we're gonna still continue to see
this sort of thing happen,
especially because Corpse Husband
is one of the biggest personalities out there right now.
Guy literally released a three second audio clip
of him breathing,
and it got over 3 million views on Twitter
in less than 20 hours.
Also in celebrity news, we had Zendaya in the news
for good and controversial reasons.
This after Netflix released a trailer
for Malcolm and Marie, which stars Zendaya
and John David Washington.
With many quick to point out and have issue
with a significant age difference between the two actors,
Washington's 36, Zendaya's 24.
Some saying Zendaya looks too young,
that the difference makes the relationship feel creepy. But others pushing back against that backlash saying Zendaya is 24, Some saying Zendaya looks too young, that the difference makes the relationship feel creepy.
But others pushing back against that backlash
saying Zendaya is 24.
She's a grown ass woman.
The difference is her choice.
In fact, the role was written for her.
She's producing the movie.
Also of note here for comparison's sake,
she's actually older than Margot Robbie was
and Wolf of Wall Street and Keira Knightley was
in Pride and Prejudice.
Right, and they both had older male co-stars
in those movies as well.
Also to that point, others have maintained
that it's not Zendaya specifically they have issue with,
rather Hollywood's tendency to constantly cast couples
with young women and older men,
or as they call it in the industry, the DiCaprio.
Then in a pivot to serious news,
we got tragic news from Indonesia,
where on Saturday, a Boeing 737-500 crashed
into the Java Sea with 62 people on board four minutes after leaving Jakarta.
Local fishermen reporting that they heard
a massive explosion around 2.30 PM on Saturday,
but initially were unsure what caused the sound.
And as of right now,
it is officially unclear what caused the crash.
It was raining heavily.
The visibility was poor,
but that also may be solved soon
as the search teams managed to find the location
of the plane's black boxes on Sunday.
With divers working around the clock
to retrieve the devices.
Although initial findings suggest that the plane was intact
when it hit the water since the debris was confined
to a fairly small area.
Then in COVID news, while many are waiting
for President-elect Joe Biden to take office January 20th,
where a timer will start because he has promised
to give 100 million Americans the COVID-19 vaccine
in 100 days, there are concerns that many of the current issues
that are plaguing Trump's vaccination effort
will likely continue into the Biden administration.
This in part because sending out millions of vaccines
is a logistical nightmare,
and it's actually the states, not the feds,
that often control the practical implementation
of the vaccination.
And many states are struggling with vaccinations.
For example, in Florida, seniors who are the first in line
report that it is a free-for-all
in getting a vaccine right now.
We as a country have been falling short, right?
The Trump administration made a promise back in December
that 20 million vaccinations would be done
by the end of the month.
They only managed 2.6 million.
By January 8th, only about 6.7 million Americans
have been vaccinated, which is a start,
but things do need to get better,
which is why you have a lot of people concerned
that Biden has decided to keep on General Gus Perna
in his role as Chief Operating Officer
of Operation Warp Speed.
Right, with people saying that he's the man
who promised 20 million vaccinations
and barely got to 2.6,
but at the same time, Perna has on-the-job experience
and losing that could put them behind their goals.
And then let's talk about the aftermath
and some of the fallout from last Wednesday.
Some have referred to it as the Capitol riot
and unorganized sloppy coup,
but at the end of the day, it is really,
it's just domestic terrorism.
A dangerous and violent mob that went from hearing
Donald Trump and others speak to the steps of,
outside the doors of, and then inside the Capitol,
where among other things,
they chanted for things like hanging Mike Pence.
From all of this, democracy was shaken,
five people were killed,
but the more stories that come out,
the more it's easy to realize
that this could have been so much worse.
And there's just far too much to talk about
for it to just be in this video,
and that's why this week and in the coming weeks
we're gonna be talking about different aspects.
But where we're gonna start
is with the social media crackdown that we've seen
in the wake of last Wednesday's events.
Mark Zuckerberg announcing that Donald Trump was suspended
from Instagram and Facebook,
at least until there is a transition of power on the 20th.
Twitter, which had put a temporary suspension
on Donald Trump, then even went further,
permanently banning Trump and removing his tweet history.
Twitter citing the risk that he could incite
further violence, which is against Twitter's rules.
Snap locked Trump's account.
Twitch indefinitely banned Trump's streaming channel,
Shopify permanently took down Trump's campaign merch store,
PayPal deactivated an account that raised money
for Trump supporters, some of whom traveled to the Capitol.
Also, in addition to aiming at Trump,
we saw Google and Apple removing Parler,
which think of it essentially as a right-wing Twitter.
All right, so they removed the app from their app stores,
but then Amazon said that it would no longer host Parler
on its AWS cloud, which is a much bigger hit
than anything Apple or Google could have done
because that makes the site essentially unusable.
With Amazon saying in an email that they made this decision
because of a steady increase in violent content
on the platform, including threats
to systematically assassinate liberal leaders,
liberal activists, BLM leaders, and supporters,
and adding, given the unfortunate events
that transpired this past week in Washington, DC,
there is serious risk that this type of content
will further incite violence.
And after receiving this email Parler CEO said on Saturday,
there is the possibility Parler will be unavailable
on the internet for up to a week as we rebuild from scratch.
Also going on to accuse big tech companies
of a coordinated attack to kill competition.
And following all of this, we saw a split reaction
with some saying that this is censorship.
It is the crackdown on freedom of speech.
But also at the same time, many others praising
these companies are taking steps to curb speech
that has the potential to incite more violence.
Though, as of this morning, we've seen Parler suing Amazon,
accusing it of violating antitrust laws
and breaching its contract, right?
And so we'll have to wait to see which way that goes.
Also, a quick note here, regardless of if you're for
or against these decisions,
according to multiple legal experts,
Twitter deciding not to participate
in disseminating someone else's message,
it does not violate the first amendment.
Or the first amendment protects us all
from government censorship and Twitter and Facebook
are not part of the government.
And regarding Trump specifically,
he still has a number of government platforms
that he's able to utilize at any time.
But also I do wanna point out,
and this is not gonna be received by everyone
because it feels like nuance is dead.
That is also not to say that these companies' massive power
and how much we rely on social media,
that it does not raise questions and concerns.
The power that these companies have
over an overwhelming number of people
is incredibly disproportionate.
Are you talking about select groups
of non-elected individuals and the thousands,
and if you combine these companies,
hundreds of thousands that make decisions
and provide paths and block certain roads
for billions of people.
Then let's talk about how there are nine more days
until Donald Trump leaves office,
but you also have lawmakers on both sides debating ways
to make this happen sooner.
Just this morning, we saw House Democrats
introducing an article of impeachment,
charging Trump with incitement of insurrection.
Also rolling out a resolution calling on Mike Pence
to invoke the 25th Amendment,
effectively declaring Trump unfit for office
and installing Pence as the president
for the remaining days in office.
But there we saw House Republicans blocking the first attempt
to pass the resolution,
meaning the Democrats will have to bring it
to a full House vote tomorrow.
And following that, once passed,
Nancy Pelosi has said that Pence will have 24 hours to act
before Democrats take matters into their own hands
and move the impeachment article to the floor for a vote.
Though there have been contradictory reports
as to whether Pence would take this route or not.
Last week, it was reported that he was opposed
to invoking the 25th, but then just this weekend,
it was also reported that he had not ruled it out.
But also of note, let's say this moves forward.
In addition, depends, you'd also need a majority
of Trump's cabinet to also agree
to deploy the 25th amendment.
And while yes, there have been reports
of discussions among cabinet members,
it is unclear if a majority supports this.
Especially now that education secretary, Betsy DeVos,
and transportation secretary, Elaine Chao,
have now resigned, effectively removing themselves from that decision,
which some people have argued
is part of the reason they did this.
And while Democratic leaders have pushed
for this method of removal
because it would be faster than impeachment,
there's this mindset of we have to get him out
of this powerful position
because he could abuse it again before he's out.
We actually have many other Democrats saying
they favor impeachment for two main reasons.
First of all, it would make Donald Trump
the first president ever to be impeached twice.
Something that a number of them believe
will hold Trump accountable and make it clear
that the insurrection crossed a line,
even if the Senate does not vote to convict.
And secondly, if Trump was impeached by the House
and actually got convicted by the Senate,
not only would he lose major benefits
awarded to former presidents,
including his $200,000 a year pension,
his lifetime secret service, security detail,
and his travel allowance.
The move would also enable the Senate to vote
by a simple majority to ban Trump
from ever holding federal office again.
Something that is incredibly notable,
given the fact that he has openly floated the idea
of running for president again in 2024.
But a thing to note there is that is not incredibly likely.
Despite the fact that the Democrats
will actually have a simple majority in the Senate now,
once Ossoff and Warnock are sworn in.
It turns out that Donald Trump's campaign strategy
of saying that the election in Georgia is rigged,
but also please vote in this said rigged election
was not a winning strategy.
And so now there's a 50-50 split in the Senate
with Kamala Harris being the tie-breaking vote.
In order for that last scenario to even happen,
to get to the point where a simple majority
could do something,
Trump would have to be convicted by the Senate
with a process that requires a two thirds vote.
And while yes, we have seen a number of Republicans
saying they believe that Trump should resign or be removed,
no Senate Republicans have outright said
they favor impeachment.
So far, you only have Ben Sasse saying
that he would consider convicting the president,
Lisa Murkowski and Pat Toomey having both said
they want Trump to resign,
but neither have said if they would impeach.
And while Toomey described Trump's actions
as an impeachable offense,
he also said there is not enough time to impeach.
Which actually also brings up another issue,
whether or not a president can be impeached and convicted
after they leave office.
Because while yes, the House could act quickly
to make Trump the first ever president to be impeached twice,
it is a different story when it comes to the Senate.
Once the House hands off the article,
the Senate must hold trials
before they can bring the issue to the floor.
And those trials could take weeks, if not months.
In which McConnell has also explicitly said
they would not even begin until January 19th,
which is the day before the inauguration.
Which also brings up another concern.
Democrats are worried that the impeachment proceedings
in the Senate would hold up
Biden's first few days in office.
A fact that McConnell seemed to promise in a memo detailing
how the process would impact cabinet nominations
and Biden's push for more coronavirus relief.
And so as a result,
while speaking to reporters over the weekend,
House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn said that Pelosi may wait
to send the article to the Senate saying,
"'Let's give President-elect Biden the 100 days he needs
"'to get his agenda off and running,
"'and maybe we'll send the article sometime after that.'"
But for now, we essentially have to wait
and see what Pelosi and Democrats will do.
But if there is a final point here,
if you were hoping for some accountability
for something with Trump,
at the very least you should expect a solid wait.
Also, as far as other fallout,
in the days following the Capitol attack,
we've seen the US Justice Department
now conducting dozens of arrests.
This, including a number of riders
that have gone viral in recent days, including
the man who was walking around with a horned hat
while carrying a spear with the American flag on it,
the man who was spotted carrying away Nancy Pelosi's lectern,
the man who was photographed sitting in Pelosi's office,
and the zip tie guy, right?
The man who was seen with large zip ties,
typically used by law enforcement as restraint devices,
with many other arrests consisting
of Republican Party officials, GOP political donors,
far-right militants, white supremacists,
and QAnon supporters.
Meanwhile, we're seeing reports of another death
following Wednesday's storming of the Capitol.
Yesterday morning, Capitol Police announced
an off-duty death of one of its officers.
And later in the day, that officer was identified
as 51-year-old Howard Leibengood, who died by suicide.
With former Capitol Police Chief Terrence Gaynor
describing Leibengood's death as a line of duty casualty
and adding that it was no different than the death
of a fellow officer who died last week
from injuries that he suffered during the attack.
Though, to be clear, we still don't officially know
if Liebengood's death is connected to the attack.
However, it has been confirmed
that he was among the officers on duty
at the Capitol on Wednesday.
Also, on the note of officers,
there is a video of a police officer
seemingly being chased through the Capitol
by a group of insurrectionists during Wednesday's attack
that has gone viral.
Don't destroy my company, man!
Fuck off!
I don't like you enough!
I don't like you enough!
Second floor!
Fuck off!
Fuck off!
Fuck off!
Fuck off!
Well, initially shared,
because it's just such a horrifying video,
it also didn't reflect the full story that we learned later.
The video begins by showing that officer identified
as army vet Eugene Goodman,
first trying to block a door from a mob of insurrectionists.
And he's doing this all alone.
Goodman then pushes the leader of that mob back
past the doorframe, but they continue coming.
From there, he grabs a baton off the floor.
That then leads to a situation
where we see him running up the stairs,
those insurrectionists chasing behind him.
As they go farther up the stairs,
they come to what just appears to be an empty hallway
that we later found out was an unguarded hallway
leading to the Senate chamber.
One that was reportedly still in the process
of being secured.
In fact, Vice President Mike Pence,
as well as several senators,
were reportedly still inside the chamber at that time.
And that is when Goodman takes action.
He pushes the leader again, reportedly hurling insults,
does everything he can to distract the man,
think that, oh, I'm backing away this way,
this is something that I'm trying to block.
A move that appears to be successful
with everyone essentially lemming towards him
until Goodman ends up finding other officers.
Which touches on just one of the many ways
that this situation, once again,
could have been so much worse.
It's also why we're seeing an overwhelming amount of love
and praise sent Goodman's way from everyday people,
as well as politicians.
Representative Bill Pascrell saying
that he saved the lives of those inside.
God bless him for his courage.
Also of note there, the leader of that mob
has now been identified as Doug Jensen,
and he's since been arrested on five federal charges.
And overall, we should expect more arrests,
especially as more footage comes out over the weekend
in a video that's now gone viral
that I'm not gonna show you
because it is truly troubling.
You see a mob of Trump supporters
dragging a Capitol police officer down the stairs.
Mob is stomping on him, they're beating on him.
You see a guy who appears to be hitting him
with a pole that has an American flag on it,
all while chanting USA.
And as time goes on,
more and more people have been getting identified.
Some being identified by family and friends,
some just regular internet sleuthing.
A lot of people have also essentially
been telling on themselves.
So many people that were a part of this
sharing content to social media, which by the way,
if you are one of these people and you're like,
the one good thing about Parler going down
is maybe no one will see the evidence.
According to reports, Parler posts, some with GPS data,
have been archived by an independent researcher.
And that my friends is where I'm going to end today's show.
Although final note today,
once we get through this comeback week,
which are always the hardest weeks,
just because there's so much and it's such a mess.
Next week, I wanna take some time to talk about
some of the differences this year,
different tweaks, different changes,
including a daily newsletter that I'm looking at launching
and I'm very, very excited about.
So click the bell, turn on the notifications.
We'll talk about it then.
But until then, my name is Philip DeFranco
and this has been News That Matters for people that care.
I'll see you tomorrow.
