Sup you beautiful bastards, hope you've had a fantastic Wednesday
Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco show and let's just jump into it
And the first thing we're gonna talk about today is the latest version of something from the past coming back and people having a problem
With it news with YouTube's own Trisha Paytas in the news who of course is a big youtuber in her own right
She's more recently in the past year been known as a member of David Dobrik's vlog squad because those videos are like on a bad
Day get 4 million views over the past few days
There's been kind of more and more backlash slowly building up against Trisha.
There was a clip from one of her old videos going around
where she's wearing a Trump shirt
and she says this about immigrants.
There are so, so many.
Taking our jobs, not paying taxes,
which are two horrible situations
in regards to our horrible economy.
So you're taking our jobs, you're not paying taxes,
we're paying for you.
Same thing goes with the women who come over here
to have the baby to give the American benefits.
They come over here pregnant, have the baby, they can stay,
and now they're reaping the benefits of Americans
without having to do the duties that Americans,
we have to do as Americans.
And this clip blew up.
I mean, just on Twitter alone, it passed 4.3 million views.
There's people pointing out that David Dobrik himself
is an immigrant, he's tweeted things in the past like,
I paid 400,000 in taxes last year and all I got
was a free trip back to Slovakia, hashtag defend DACA.
So all of this then resulted in her releasing
an apology video titled, I Do Not Support Trump.
It's like 24 minutes long, I'm just gonna,
I'm gonna try and squish it down.
She starts off by explaining that she's apologized
for this before, that she's willing to do it again
because there are people that might not be familiar
with this, and in the video she kind of rambles,
but at around six minutes in she says,
I'm truly, truly sorry.
Like this is not damage control, this is nothing.
This is like me just like, it's weighing on me.
Charles has said regarding Trump,
she never thought he would win the presidency,
never really cared about politics or supporting Trump,
adding that she's also never actually voted
because she believed that politics didn't affect her.
I don't know if it's public record, but you can look up,
I've never voted a day in my life.
Like that might be, that also might be ignorant
and also might upset left wings,
white wings, like people just might be angry
because I've never voted.
I'm 30 years old and I never,
I've just never voted because I'm just not,
I've never cared about politics.
I've, and maybe I should, and like that's the other thing,
like I should, and like I think because it's never
like directly affected me, I should and like I think because it's never like directly affected me
I never really like paid attention. Then saying she realizes that it does affect her
She's grown and met more people that have helped her think differently then adding that in the past
She used to repeat things that she heard from people from her hometown or just say things she thought were controversial for attention
She also specifically mentioned her old Mitt Romney videos as an example early on if you guys don't know my youtube career like I
I think my first couple viral videos were about Mitt Romney videos as an example. Early on, if you guys don't know, in my YouTube career, like I, I think my first couple viral videos were about Mitt Romney.
And I did Mitt Romney,
I don't even think Mitt Romney got the nomination.
Did he? I don't even know.
Maybe he was, maybe he was a candidate.
I don't remember.
Keep going.
I did videos like supporting Mitt Romney
and I very overtly like dumbed myself.
Like I just overtly dumbed myself down like
I'm voting for Mitt because my cat's name is Mittens and what was so funny for me is like big
channels like the Young Turks were picking that up and like critiquing the video like this is a
Mitt Romney supporter and that Mitt Romney video I remember at the time it made me like it wasn't a
ton of money now like looking back hindsight but I, it paid my rent, you know what I mean?
And I was like, whoa.
And I was like a stripper at the time, right?
So I was just like, dang, like I just gotta do more
of these like controversial videos.
Kind of long story short there, she says she goes on
to say that she personally realizes
that she's maybe hurting people.
She stopped making those videos, apologizes once again.
She then goes on to kind of hit on the title of the video,
saying she does not support Trump,
but also saying that she is not anti-Tr at about 21 minutes in she addresses her comments and thoughts about immigrants
I'm thankful for people who do work hard in this country and
You know
However, you've gotten in this country if you were born into it if you worked hard to get in it if you were brought
Into this as a baby unknowingly, you know, whatever, however you got here,
like, you know, people who work hard in this country,
people do, and it's like,
I'm thankful for them because, you know,
I have been blessed, I have a, you know,
pretty easy job now, but even before this,
I was a stripper, and like,
what is that contributing to society now?
And the response was mixed,
although depending on where you looked,
it's always hard to tell.
For example, on our YouTube video as
Of recording this has more likes than dislikes
But all the top comments are really negative things like quote politics don't affect me dumb ass as always another reading
I don't like Laura Lee at all
But you called her out for her BS apology video where she blames a small town
She grew up in girl you literally gave half the same excuses
She did others just really not believing her saying you supported Trump
You made a video educating your audience about Trump own up to it and stop doing these apology videos
He also had others thinking that she was being misleading because in the video she says five years ago
Trump video was from 2016 but also at the same time to kind of defend Trisha here
She may have actually been talking about the Mitt Romney videos which were from around six years ago
But as far as our coverage, that's where this one's gonna end and as far as my opinion on the situation and Trisha
I it's one of those things where when you see someone online you don't really know them.
I've always personally hoped that Trisha was just like a really exaggerated
character that she was trolling, but I do not know her and so I can't speak to that. Actually,
I do want to note there that that's not based off of whatever her political leanings or political feelings are, like that's not it.
That's more related to like she's posted several videos in the past where she seemed to be in crisis and
It was just like is it real is it fake also as far as people evolving past who they were before
What they were putting out there? I mean, I feel like I'm an example of that
I don't know ultimately everyone themselves gets to decide but looking at the situation as the outsider than I am in this one so many of
These characters that we see on social media and specifically YouTube have the ability to really hyper grow from controversy.
Trisha specifically is put in this kind of weird place.
Because if you were offended by the comments
from her past video, there is the possibility
that you do not believe her apology now.
Or based off of her reaction around the Laura Lee situation,
you think that she's being hypocritical.
But also a big chunk of this group is going to defend her
or just not care, right?
It's something that's in the past.
And then on the other side, you would have people
that would possibly support her and defend her
if she was someone that just you know
Supported Romney back in the day supported Trump back in the day, but in her apology by saying that you know her opinions have changed
She somewhat denounces those comments says that she was trolling dumbing herself down for those videos
So you're probably not gonna get as much support as you could have there
Yeah, that's really where this story is right now. And of course like with everything I talked about on the show
I'd love to know your thoughts if you have any then very very briefly, let's have a segment called Today in Cringe.
And what we're talking about today, I wish I could take this moment, put it into a blender
and just sip on it. But what we're talking about today is we have a CNN legal analyst by the name
of Areva Martin. She's on the SiriusXM show for David Webb, who's also a Fox News contributor.
In their back and forth, we were given given this moment i've chosen to cross different parts of the media world done the work so that i'm qualified to be in each one i never considered my
color the issue i considered my qualifications the issue well david you know that that's a whole
another long conversation about white privilege and things that you have the privilege of doing
that people of color don't have the privilege of how do i have the privilege of white privilege and things that you have the privilege of doing that people of color don't
have the privilege of how do i have the privilege of white privilege david by virtue of being a
white male you have white privilege with this whole long conversation i don't have time to
riva i hate to break it to you but you should have been better prepped i'm black okay then
i see you went to white privilege this is the fall suit in this
you went immediately with an assumption your people obviously or you didn't look you're
talking to a black man who started out in rock radio in boston
and that's all there really is to the story.
I just, I don't care if you're left wing, right wing,
middle of the road, sometimes, it's just kind of fun
to sometimes see people get dunked on.
And that's really all there is to this one.
Then in actually massive news
in the tech slash music streaming world,
Verizon has announced that if you have their
beyond unlimited or their above unlimited plan,
you now get an Apple Music subscription for free.
And also for those that have their go unlimited plan, you get get an Apple Music subscription for free. And also for those that have their Go Unlimited plan,
you get a free six month trial for Apple Music.
So massive news, albeit not a completely
out of nowhere move.
We've seen other companies offer
other collaborative free perks.
Certain plans for T-Mobile get free Netflix.
There's also a Sprint plan that gives people subscriptions
to Hulu and Tidal.
But as far as Apple Music is concerned,
as far as the fight for music streaming,
I mean, this is massive.
They've already had an amazing year
just gobbling up music streaming market share
where Spotify had previously just been
kind of the unadulterated king.
But with that said, a question I'll pass off
to those of you that have a music subscription.
Which service do you use and why do you prefer it?
Personally, I have Spotify and Apple Music,
though I think I actually prefer Spotify.
I like the playlists that are created there more
and I feel like I find more interesting music through that
But that's also just kind of been my personal experience. Then in a quickie update just 72 days before the UK is supposed to be
Leaving the European Union we got news. Following yesterday's news of the colossal defeat of Theresa May's Brexit deal today after labor leader
Jeremy Corbyn called for a vote of no confidence Theresa May and her government barely survived
Thanks to a vote of 325 to 306.
Ultimately, that's where we are right now. That historically denounced Brexit deal is still there.
They're no closer to having that figured out. Remember, they're still just 10 weeks out from
when they're supposed to leave the EU. And ultimately, we're gonna have to wait to see
what happens. But I have been seeing more and more people speaking up about having a second
referendum. And really, with the way everything has gone, I feel like everything is as likely as the other option.
But we'll see.
And then let's talk about this horrible situation
in Nairobi.
And what we're talking about is on Tuesday,
explosions followed by gunshots were heard
in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.
And that was because a group of assailants
attacked the luxury Doucet D2 Hotel
and the surrounding complex in the middle of the day.
The hotel and complex of shops and restaurants
is located in the neighborhood of Westgate
near central Nairobi.
It's a common spot for business people to work and others to come for lunches or to shop.
And as we often see with these events, details during the attack yesterday were scarce all over the place, unverified,
but we now have a clearer picture of events. Although some details are still up in the air, but here's what we know.
At 3 p.m. local time CCTV footage saw at least four black clad heavily armed gunmen enter the complex,
although right now they're unsure if more men were involved in the attack
The assault reportedly began with an explosion at the I&M Bank, which is located right next to the Doucet Hotel
They targeted three vehicles. Then according to Joseph Boynette, Inspector General of the police
This was followed by a suicide explosion in the foyer of the Doucet Hotel where a number of guests suffered severe injuries
Hundreds of people were seen fleeing the complex while others barricaded their buildings
to stop attackers from entering.
Throughout the attack, gunmen fired as people fled
and the shots could be heard from around
the nearby areas of the city.
Following this, there were widespread calls for help
from people in the complex, both on the ground
and via sites like Twitter.
We've also seen stories from survivors
which gave more details of the attack.
Like the details provided by John Monege,
a worker at the Secret Garden Hotel.
He said, there were a flash of lights and a loud bang. When by John Monege, a worker at the Secret Garden Hotel. He said,
There were a flash of lights and a loud bang.
When I peeped outside, I saw a human leg
which had been cut off.
We hid in the room and then some police officers
rescued us.
And reportedly the last place the gunmen entered
was the hotel where they held a lot of people hostage,
although the exact amount is unknown.
Now quickly after the start of the attacks,
police entered the complex and began clearing it
of attackers building by building.
According to reports, the attackers decided
to fortify themselves into the
seven-story hotel against the responding Kenyan police, which led to a 19-hour siege. And throughout the night there was sporadic gunfire at around
3.30 a.m.
nearly 12 hours after the attack began, dozens of hotel guests were rescued, and then everything ramped up in the morning with a gunfire
intensifying between police and the attackers, all until mid-morning on Wednesday when the complex was finally secured.
Officially, 21 people have died with at least over a dozen others injured.
The US State Department has said that one American has died, while there are confirmations about a British national dying as well, in addition to Kenyans.
And while it's obviously important to talk about this horrible, horrible attack,
I think it is also important to mention and show how much people are willing to help in times of crisis. In the middle
of this just complete horror show, we've seen countless videos of people helping others escape in the middle of this attack.
It's incredibly important we mention and praise the rescue crews who entered the complex to help the wounded and storm the hotel
despite the gunfire. This is something President Kenyatta also touched on in his speech.
For every act of evil
that led to injury yesterday,
there were dozens of acts of compassion,
overflowing patriotism, and individual courage.
And as far as who is responsible for this,
police initially suspected that yes,
this is a terror attack,
especially considering that the nature of the attack
seemed to target wealthy Kenyans and foreigners.
And they saw this as a telltale sign of an attack by Al-Shabaab, a terror group in especially considering that the nature of the attack seemed to target wealthy Kenyans and foreigners, and they saw this as a telltale sign
of an attack by al-Shabaab, a terror group
in neighboring Somalia.
They target wealthy areas to undermine foreign investment
and confidence in the emerging Kenyan economy.
And they're active in Kenya for a few reasons,
some religious, but mainly political,
because of Kenya's involvement in the Somali conflict.
In the past, they've also been responsible for things
like when they attacked the Westgate Mall,
killing 67 people over a four-day siege.
Or more recently, back in 2015, the group attacked the Universitygate Mall killing 67 people over a four-day siege. Or more recently back in 2015 the
group attacked the University of Garissa killing 148 people and in fact the group did end up taking credit for the attack.
And so as far as the attack and what we know that that's where we are right now.
I like many others are enraged by the monsters behind this attack. My heart heart breaks for those affected, those those killed, their family, their friends.
It's a senseless horrible attack and whether it be something on our shores or
elsewhere, it's something that we should really never be numb to. I feel like with how constantly so many of us are aware of the
news, it just, it has a way of just beating you down. But it's really important for us to remember that all of these numbers,
those were people. It's one of the reasons why with every one of these horrible stories,
I always try to highlight the heroes in an everyday life. I didn't see the person in front of them as a number
They saw them as another human being they wanted to help but also kind of with this thinking one of the last things I want
to touch on with this story is something that really stood out to me and understand that this part is just so much less than
Just the horrible actual story
It was something that I was interested in your opinion on following the coverage of this attack
One of the places that was hit with a lot of backlash was the New York Times. And that was because the New York Times put out an article by Kimiko de Freitas Tamura,
and it featured images of people injured, people killed.
It showed the nightmare that these people were living through.
We saw the backlash online, some using the hashtag
Deport Kimiko, others using Someone Tell New York Times.
And the backlash was around the showcasing of those graphic images,
with people saying that it was disrespectful to the victims of the attack with others saying that there was a double standard on how this story was covered because it was
In Africa some of the tweets saying this is how New York Times covers terror attacks from various parts of the world notice
No images of dead victims others sharing images like this one what the New York Times won't report a patriot has brought breakfast for the
Rescuers united than ever Kenyans are also donating blood all over.
Terrorism will never triumph."
And in response to the backlash,
the New York Times said in a statement,
"'We have heard from some readers upset
with our publishing a photo showing victims
after a brutal attack in Nairobi.
We understand how painful this coverage can be,
and we try to be very sensitive
in how we handle both words and images in these situations.
We want to be respectful to the victims
and to others affected by the attack.
But we also believe it is important to give our readers a clear picture of the horror of an attack like this this includes showing
pictures that are not
Sensationalized but that give a real sense of the situation and adding we take the same approach wherever in the world something like this happens
balancing the need for sensitivity and respect with our mission of showing the reality of these events and so with this situation
one I personally want to take a deeper dive into seeing if there is a double standard
because a lot of people are sharing kind of the front page
or whatever the picture of the link is.
But also, two, I wanted to hear from you regarding
what do you think is the best way
to showcase a story like this?
Right, kind of how, like I mentioned before,
I think a lot of people, if it's not directly affecting them,
they can be numb to things like this.
Right, and so should the news organization go,
this is the reality of the situation,
without sensationalizing,
because you see the aftermath of an attack
and you understand this is why this is such a big deal.
Or no, you think that it is wrong, it is disrespectful,
maybe even what the monsters behind the attack want.
Or no, once again, it is the job of a news organization
to show you the reality of the world.
I know, it's something I've been thinking about
because of this story, but that's also why I wanted to end on this
and pass the question off to you.
And that's where I'm going to end today's show.
