Starting point is 00:00:00 Sup, you beautiful bastards. Hope you have a fantastic Thursday. Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco Show of Note. Today is the final Philip DeFranco Show of 2019. Thank you for just a fantastic year. It's been a crazy one. I felt less alone just knowing that there's someone else to talk about this with. Yeah, with that said, let's go out on a high note today. Definitely hit that like button. Otherwise, I may have to punch you in the throat. I put that said, let's just jump into it. And the first thing we're gonna talk about today is this controversy surrounding Camila Cabello, right? And if you didn't see, yesterday she apologized
Starting point is 00:00:31 for a racist and offensive language that she used on social media in the past. But really all this started when a Twitter user posted a thread where they said, "'Exposing Camila Cabello is racist "'and downright disturbing' Tumblr reblog." A thread. And this person then shared screenshots
Starting point is 00:00:43 from a Tumblr account that they say belonged to Camila several years ago, pointing out that it appears that an old photo of Camila is the profile picture. That and the account was called Vous Etes Belle. And Camila once said on her main Tumblr that this account belonged to her. And as far as the posts in question,
Starting point is 00:00:56 they were shared around 2012 and 2013, when Camila would have been around 15 or 16 years old. And it appears in one original post, she uses the N-word, also reblogging several other posts with racist messaging. And also with Tumblr, if you're unfamiliar, think of reblogging as kind of similar to retweeting. Those posts included things like what the Twitter user called an extremely racist GIF that stereotypes
Starting point is 00:01:14 an African American child. And screenshots of that GIF, you can see the child excitedly looking at KFC and watermelon. Also reblogging another post playing into the stereotype. There are also several other reblogs that use the N word. Also racist jokes made at the expense of black, Mexican and Asian people. Also a controversial post joking into the stereotype. There were also several other reblogs that used the N word. Also racist jokes made at the expense of black, Mexican and Asian people. Also a controversial post joking about the abuse
Starting point is 00:01:28 Rihanna faced when dating Chris Brown. Right, and this thread goes viral, which also caused a ton of backlash. You had people calling out the racism in these posts using the hashtag Camila Cabello is over party. Though also notably you had people coming to her defense. People arguing that this was years ago, that she was young when she made those comments or reblogged.
Starting point is 00:01:44 But others still saying people should know better regardless of age. One notable tweet that blew was years ago, that she was young when she made those comments or reblogged. But others still saying people should know better regardless of age. One notable tweet that blew up here read, "'Camila Cabello is so annoying. "'Like, oh wow, you were so young at 15, "'you didn't understand racism. "'My 14 year old brother broke down to me the other day "'because a stranger on the bus called him a n-word.
Starting point is 00:01:58 "'So forgive me for not giving two fucks "'about the excuses for your racist phase.'" Others also arguing that many of the people defending or forgiving her were white and also asked, how do you forgive words that weren't directed at you? Right, and so this is blowing up. We also, during this time, see the Tumblr account go down, which also appears that someone took that URL
Starting point is 00:02:13 and now they're using it to promote K-pop star, Loona. And all of that then brings us back to where I started this story with Camila apologizing, posting on Twitter and her Instagram story. And though she didn't mention the post specifically, she started by saying, "'I'm sorry from the bottom of my heart. With the post going on to say,
Starting point is 00:02:27 when I was younger, I used language that I'm deeply ashamed of and will regret forever. I was uneducated and ignorant. And once I became aware of the history and weight and the true meaning behind this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply embarrassed I ever used it.
Starting point is 00:02:40 I apologize then and I apologize again now. Also saying she can't go back in time and change things, even though she wishes she could. So all she can do is know better moving forward. And then saying, I'm 22 now, I apologize again now. Also saying she can't go back in time and change things even though she wishes she could. So all she can do is know better moving forward. And then saying, I'm 22 now, I'm an adult and I've grown and learned and am conscious and aware of the history and the pain it carries in a way I wasn't before.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Those mistakes don't represent the person I am or a person I've ever been. I only stand and have ever stood for love and inclusivity and my heart has never even then had any ounce of hate or divisiveness." And ultimately, that's where we are with this story. We haven't seen any other statements from Cabello. There are people still talking about this online,
Starting point is 00:03:12 but in general, a lot of the focus as far as like, which celebrity is under fire today, that appears to be going to JK Rowling. And so Camila definitely benefiting from that. But with this story, I would love to know your thoughts. Where do you land with a story like this? Do you feel like this is toxic cancel culture of using something from years ago to tear down someone now?
Starting point is 00:03:28 Or do you think, no, this is just holding people accountable, trying to create a learning moment? Maybe it's somewhere in between. Any and all thoughts you have on this, I'd love to see in those comments down below. And then it's that time of year again, Forbes has released the top 10 list of highest paid YouTubers for 2019.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Now, before we hit the top 10, I do wanna note, this is not, in in my opinion a definitive list because as Forbes explains their methodology, this is based off of all earnings estimates from June 1st, 2018 to June 1st, 2019. Figures are pre-tax fees for agents, managers, and lawyers are not deducted. And the earning estimates themselves are based on data
Starting point is 00:03:58 from Captive 8, Social Blade, and Polestar. As well as interviews with industry insiders. And regarding estimates, I mean, if you look at a place like Social Blade, if you look at, let's say the Philip DeFranco channel, they estimate based on ad sets that we make between $3.9 thousand or $63.2 thousand. Big range.
Starting point is 00:04:14 And I mention that because I think we should always be skeptical. And also, this is not me co-signing the list. So regarding the top 10, according to Forbes, you have Vanoss Gaming, Dan TDM, Markiplier Tied with PewDiePie, Preston Arsman, who's a new name to me personally, followed by Jeffree Star, followed by Rhett and Link.
Starting point is 00:04:29 Then taking home bronze, you have Anastasia Ryazinskaya. This was also a new one to me. She's reportedly a Russian-born five-year-old who's become one of the world's fastest growing creators. Then taking home silver, you have Dude Perfect. And finally, you have the YouTube phenom himself, Ryan, and his parents. He of course took home gold last year,
Starting point is 00:04:47 and if you've walked into any Walmart, you see that success has not gone away. He's aligned with over 100 toys, clothing, a Nickelodeon show now. So yeah, there's that. React however you wish. Feel inspired or infuriated or nothing because you're just tired and empty
Starting point is 00:05:05 inside wondering because you decided over a decade ago you wanted to make your content about the most polarizing thing happening that day and not fun videos playing with toys I'm fine congratulations everyone on this list I'm fine but actually with this story I would love to know your thoughts on seeing this list and the money involved because it does feel like it's constantly changing I mean we've talked about it on the show before. I remember when I was on YouTube early days. Back in the day, if you put a sponsorship in a video,
Starting point is 00:05:30 people lost tons of subscribers, and now it's like people celebrate someone getting a sponsorship. Yeah, obviously everyone has different feelings. There's also different kinds of creators. So yeah, I'd love to know what you're thinking. And of course, the final thing that we're going to talk about today is impeachment.
Starting point is 00:05:47 And if you even slightly glanced at news or social media since last night, you probably already know that the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Trump, that making him the third president ever to be impeached. And actually, the House voted on two articles of impeachment. The first article alleging that Trump abused his presidential powers
Starting point is 00:06:00 by pressuring Ukraine to investigate his political rival, Joe Biden, by withholding a White House meeting and nearly $400 million in military aid. And the second article claiming that Trump obstructed Congress's impeachment inquiry by refusing to cooperate and hand over key documents in addition to blocking subpoenaed witnesses from testifying.
Starting point is 00:06:14 And that decision and folk came after the House spent pretty much the entire day debating, or in my opinion, performing. Most everyone knew who was gonna do what at the beginning of the day. While we saw a lot of arguments from the Democrats and Republicans that we've seen throughout this whole process, there were also some moments that can only be described as unusual. Things like this clip of
Starting point is 00:06:30 Republican Representative Barry Loudermilk. When Jesus was falsely accused of treason, Pontius Pilate gave Jesus the opportunity to face his accusers. During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than the Democrats have afforded this president in this process. Right, seemingly comparing Donald Trump to Jesus and Democrats to the Roman governor who ordered Jesus's crucifixion. Another moment coming from Republican Representative Mike Kelly, who referenced Pearl Harbor. But also on December 7th, 1941, a horrific act happened in the United States. And it's one that President Roosevelt said, this is a date that will live in infamy. Today, December the 18th, 2019, is another date that will live in infamy.
Starting point is 00:07:09 You know, ultimately after hours and hours of the debate, people doing their dance, the House officially holds the vote. And there, because there were two articles, there were two separate votes on each one, with members voting on the abuse of power article first, and there we actually saw another notable moment, this one, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi
Starting point is 00:07:22 announces the vote total. On this vote, the yeas are 230, the nays are 197, present is one, article one is adopted. Right, and that look and gesture from Pelosi is incredibly important because Pelosi has continued to say that impeaching a president is a sad event,
Starting point is 00:07:45 repeatedly calling it somber, and trying to paint it as not something that she wanted to do, but rather that Trump gave her no choice. This also to push back against a common Republican argument that Democrats are just impeaching Donald Trump because they didn't like him and never wanted him in office. Which actually, on that note, I mean,
Starting point is 00:07:57 we even saw reports leading up to the impeachment vote that, quote, House Democratic leaders told caucus members not to cheer or applaud when today's impeachment vote totals are announced. But even when the second vote total was announced, there was still at least one yay, which resulted in Pelosi holding her hand up, kind of trying to stop or warn them. Also, regarding the vote totals, you can kind of see they happen pretty much along party lines. Right, no Republicans voted in favor of either article.
Starting point is 00:08:16 Pretty much all Democrats voted yes on both, though. Two voted no on the first article. Three voted no on the second article. Though, we should know that one of the Democrats who voted on both articles recently announced that he plans to join the Republican party. But one of the most notable Democrat votes was a vote that wasn't yes or no, but rather present. And that vote coming from 2020 presidential candidate
Starting point is 00:08:35 and representative from Hawaii, Tulsi Gabbard. A vote that resulted in this reaction from former Senator Claire McCaskill. Tulsi Gabbard, who was mysteriously missing all day, is in the chamber and has voted present. Claire McCaskill, what does that mean? It's just stupid. Now, as far as Gabbard's reasoning for this specific vote,
Starting point is 00:08:57 she tried to explain her decision in a video posted on Twitter. After doing my due diligence and reviewing the 658-page impeachment report, I came to the conclusion that I could not in good conscience vote either yes or no. I am standing in the center and decided to vote present. I could not in good conscience vote against impeachment because I believe President Trump is guilty of wrongdoing. I also could not in good conscience vote for impeachment because removal of a sitting president
Starting point is 00:09:29 must not be the culmination of a partisan process fueled by tribal animosities that have so gravely divided our country. Right, also saying that she had introduced a censure resolution, which is basically a strong rebuke of the president, saying that the resolution would still send a message to Trump and future presidents
Starting point is 00:09:46 while still leaving the question of removal to voters in 2020, and then concluding. My vote today is a vote for much needed reconciliation and hope that together we can heal our country. But also with that vote, it resulted in a trending topic on Twitter, things like Tulsi Coward, as well as Tulsi is a Russian asset. Right, so there was that, but also while the impeachment vote was happening, interestingly enough, Trump was at a rally.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Specifically, he was campaigning in Michigan. Trump actually delayed going on stage for about an hour to watch the tail end of the debate. And when he did finally come out, he did speak about the impeachment. It doesn't really feel like we're being impeached. The country is doing better than ever before. We did nothing wrong. We did nothing wrong. And we have tremendous support in the Republican Party like we've never had before. That rally lasting more than two hours,
Starting point is 00:10:36 during which time Trump also criticized Democrats, saying that they were trying to nullify the votes of millions of Americans. Also saying former President Barack Obama deserved to be impeached more than him. Also at the moment that he was being impeached, Trump was telling a story about stealth bombers being invisible.
Starting point is 00:10:49 That helps, stealth. It's actually called super stealth. There's also a moment where protesters unfurled a banner that read, Don the Con, you're fired. And as you'd expect, the audience starts booing. They even try and cover up the signs. Protesters end up being escorted.
Starting point is 00:11:02 While that's happening, Trump chimes in. But there's a slob, there's a real slob. Wait. Wait a minute. She'll get hell when she gets back home with mom. But then really, one of the main key moments here that just people really honed in on was when Donald Trump decided to attack John Dingell
Starting point is 00:11:23 and his widow. And for those who don't know, John Dingell was the longest serving member of Congress in American history. He represented Michigan from 1955 to 2015. And his wife is Democratic Representative Debbie Dingell, who also voted yes to impeachment. And John died back in February. And so last night, Donald Trump said this of Debbie and John Dingell. Debbie Dingell, that's a real beauty. So she calls me up, like eight months ago, her husband was here a long time, but I didn't give him the B treatment,
Starting point is 00:11:51 I didn't give him the C or the D, I could have. Nobody would have, you know. I gave the A plus treatment. Take down the flags while you're taking them down for ex-Congressman Dingell. Oh, okay, do this, do that, do that. Rotunda, everything. I gave him everything.
Starting point is 00:12:09 That's okay. I don't want anything for it. I don't need anything for anything. She calls me up. It's the nicest thing that's ever happened. Thank you so much. John would be so thrilled. He's looking down.
Starting point is 00:12:21 He'd be so thrilled. Thank you so much, sir. I said, that's okay, don't worry about it. Maybe he's looking up, I don't know. I don't know. Maybe. Maybe. But let's assume he's looking down.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Right, so seemingly the president insinuating and joking about John Dingell being in hell. And shortly after this comment, we saw Debbie Dingell responding to Trump on Twitter, saying, Mr. President, let's set politics aside. My husband earned all his accolades after a lifetime of service. I'm preparing for the first holiday season
Starting point is 00:12:53 without the man I love. You brought me down in a way you can never imagine, and your hurtful words just made my healing much harder. And today we also saw Debbie Dingell going on to CNN where she said that she didn't make any of those requests that Donald Trump talked about. Also pointing out that her husband didn't lie and stayed in the rotunda and saying that it was actually Donald Trump who called her to tell her that he would be lowering the flags.
Starting point is 00:13:11 With her spokesperson later telling the Washington Post that Trump wasn't even involved in the arrangements at all and that he called her after the arrangements had already been made. And just to insert myself a little bit into the situation, like I feel like everyone already knows Donald Trump is a douchebag. Even people who support him are like, yeah. For some, that's part of the reason they voted for him. But the way, even though we're several years in, that he is able to just hit new levels of douchebaggery
Starting point is 00:13:35 is genuinely astonishing. And the thing is, I don't think that trend will ever really stop. And that's because, yes, today you have Republicans rebuking the president. Now when Lindsey Graham was asked about this today, it looks like he's at a point where he's dying. He jokingly implied that the congressman's in hell. If he said that, he should apologize.
Starting point is 00:13:53 That would be a very, that would be a bad thing to say. If he said that, he should apologize. Because John Diggle's a fine, fine man. Look at that face. That face says, what am I supporting? But to continue moving the story along, since all of this, we've seen the president unsurprisingly active on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:14:10 As of recording this video, there's a pinned tweet with a picture of him reading, "'In reality, they're not after me, they're after you. "'I'm just in the way.'" Over the last few hours, there were just kind of pages and pages of him retweeting conservative lawmakers and supporters. This morning, he also tweeted,
Starting point is 00:14:22 "'100% Republican vote, that's what people are talking about. The Republicans are united like never before. Trump then tweeting kind of a recurring slogan for himself, presidential harassment. You know, ultimately that's where we are. Also last night, a fun little side thing. Y'all got to learn who knows what impeachment is and what impeachment isn't.
Starting point is 00:14:38 Saw a number of tweets from random people last night going, yes, he's not president anymore. Another's reading he's not impeached until it goes through the Senate. No, that's removal. Being impeached doesn't mean that Trump will be removed, which yes, removal is decided by the Senate. Unless something really unusual happens,
Starting point is 00:14:52 Trump is expected to be acquitted, right? The Senate would have to vote against the president with a two thirds majority, and the Republicans already have a majority in the Senate. Now on the note of the trial, even before the House voted, the Senate was already gearing up to hold the impeachment trial.
Starting point is 00:15:03 And as expected, it's already contentious. On Tuesday, we saw Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejecting Democrats' demands to call for White House officials as witnesses, saying that there were no reasons for the Senate to agree to hear testimony from officials who could help the Democrats' case. In addition to that, we saw McConnell criticized on Tuesday
Starting point is 00:15:16 for telling reporters that he would not be an impartial judge in the trial. Right, so that raised more questions about whether or not McConnell would hold a fair trial. Which I will say, if you really think about it, Senate trials are weird. Right, just because, think, for anyone else, right? You or I, we have to have a trial, right?
Starting point is 00:15:28 We know that the jury will not be only comprised of enemies and friends. But I get that it's the process. Though, I will say, at this point, it looks like the trial in the Senate might actually end up being delayed. And this was because Pelosi last night said that she would delay sending
Starting point is 00:15:40 the articles of impeachment to the Senate. And for her part, Pelosi said that she's holding these articles until it's clear that the Senate and McConnell would conduct a fair trial. So far we haven't seen anything that looks fair to us. So hopefully it will be fair. And when we see what that is, we'll send it. What Pelosi looks like she's specifically trying to do here
Starting point is 00:15:58 is to slow down the impeachment process to force Senate Republicans to set procedures that Democrats find more favorable. And that decision has stirred up its own fair amount of controversy. On that matter, this morning we saw President Trump say, "'Pelosi feels her phony impeachment hoax is so pathetic, "'she is afraid to present it to the Senate, "'which can set a date and put this whole scam into default
Starting point is 00:16:15 "'if they refuse to show up. "'The do-nothings are so bad for our country.'" We also saw McConnell attack the move on the Senate floor this morning. And it was made even more clear last night when Speaker Pelosi suggested that House Democrats may be too afraid, too afraid to even transmit their shoddy work product
Starting point is 00:16:31 to the Senate. Mr. President, it looks like the prosecutors are getting cold feet in front of the entire country and second guessing whether they even want to go to trial. But then Pelosi responded to McConnell in a press conference this morning. We would hope there would be a fair process, just as we hoped that they would honor the Constitution. By the way, I saw some of it, I didn't see it,
Starting point is 00:16:54 but I heard some of what Mitch McConnell said today. And it reminded me that our founders, when they wrote the Constitution, they suspected that there could be a rogue president. I don't think they suspected that there could be a rogue president. I don't think they suspected that we could have a rogue president and a rogue leader in the Senate at the same time. And ultimately, that is where we are right now. And it's gonna be interesting to see what happens moving forward. So what I'll say is now that the timeline is the most interesting thing to me, because we know a Republican led Senate is not going to vote against the president, right? So
Starting point is 00:17:21 then the main focal point becomes, how does this effect the 2020 election? Right, if this drags out, does that hurt or help Trump? Or on the other side, you know, you've had McConnell and Republican Senate leaders saying they wanted to hold this trial in January, make it as fast as possible. Does that hurt or help Trump? Right, because Trump could play the angle of,
Starting point is 00:17:37 oh, the Democrats were thwarted. But also there's the potential of Democrats saying, hey, we did what the Constitution told us to do. Right, we tried, we went through the process, even though we knew this would die in the Senate because of a Republican majority. You know, checks and balances only exist if levers are pulled.
Starting point is 00:17:49 And then with the impeachment circus behind them, not grabbing the headlines every single day, and they could instead focus on and campaign on issues that move people in their party, things like climate change, healthcare, school debt. And that is where we're going to end today's show, the last show of the year, the last show of the year, the last show of the decade.
Starting point is 00:18:07 Feels a little bit like we're ending on a mid-season cliffhanger, especially for the show that is America. Yeah, if you liked today's video, definitely hit that like button. Also, if you're new here, hit that subscribe button. And also just for, even if you're already subscribed, make sure you have your bell clicked
Starting point is 00:18:20 and it looks exactly like this. Otherwise, when the show comes back in January, you may not get a notification, and then what? You just walk around in your life, acting like it's normal not to be filled in? Just an empty existence? I don't know what I'm saying. Once again, thanks for watching this show.
Starting point is 00:18:33 Thanks for watching this year. I love your faces, and I'll see you next time.
