Starting point is 00:01:53 beautifulbastard.com. Get what you want while you can. Do not miss out. With that said, I have a big show for you today, starting with this. ICE has arrested and is trying to deport a well-known Palestinian activist, despite the fact that he has a green card, a move that many experts say is a violation of free speech rights under the First Amendment. Right, and this is also incredibly significant because it appears to mark the first publicly known arrest under Trump's broader promise to revoke student visas
Starting point is 00:02:16 and deport non-citizen students who joined pro-Palestine campus protests last year, with him claiming that the students no longer had the right to stay in the country because they supported Hamas. And while this is something that Trump has been promising for a while, this latest news notably comes after he brought this whole thing to the next level last week, with him writing on Truth Social.
Starting point is 00:02:31 All federal funding will stop for any college, school, or university that allows illegal protests. Agitators will be imprisoned or permanently sent back to the country from which they came. And adding American students will be permanently expelled or depending on the crime, arrested. Though this, as many have noted, that the White House hasn't really clarified
Starting point is 00:02:47 what they consider to be an illegal protest, given the fact that these activities are usually protected under the First Amendment. But regardless, the administration has made it clear that Columbia is its first major target, with it announcing on Friday that it had canceled $400 million in grants and contracts to the school,
Starting point is 00:03:00 and now going after one of the most prominent protest leaders there. And specifically, the activist in question is Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia graduate student with Palestinian heritage who graduated with a master's in December. And while he was still at the university, last year, he became a leader of the protest movement, with Khalil describing his role to reporters as a negotiator and spokesman for the school's pro-Palestinian group. And according to a statement from his lawyer, Amy Greer, over the weekend, Khalil was stopped by ICE agents who
Starting point is 00:03:23 told him his student visa had been revoked. And saying that when he told them that he was a lawful permanent resident with a green card because his wife is a US citizen, they detained him anyway. And this is Greer also said that she doesn't know where Khalil's even being held. But they're saying that she was told Sunday morning that he was being detained in Elizabeth, New Jersey,
Starting point is 00:03:38 a fact that was also listed on an ICE detainee locator website. But then adding, when his wife, a US citizen who was eight months pregnant and was threatened with arrest as well by the ICE agents last night, tried to visit him there today, she was told he is not detained there. So now you have Greer saying she received reports
Starting point is 00:03:51 that he may have been transferred as far away as Louisiana. Several outlets have also since reported that records suggest that Khalil is indeed being held in custody in Louisiana. The attorney then going on to say that she has filed a habeas corpus petition on Khalil's behalf, challenging his arrest and detention, and adding, We will vigorously be pursuing Mahmoud's rights in court and will continue our efforts to right
Starting point is 00:04:09 this terrible and inexcusable and calculated wrong committed against him. And with that, saying that the arrest follows the U.S. government's open repression of student activism and political speech, specifically targeting students at Columbia University for criticism of Israel's assault on Gaza. Adding, the U.S. government has made clear that they will use immigration enforcement as a tool to suppress that speech. But as far as exactly why Khalil's being detained, that remains unclear right now.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Right now with that, I'll say in a statement last night, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said that he was arrested in quote, "'Support of President Trump's executive orders prohibiting antisemitism.'" Adding, Khalil led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization, and saying, "'ICE and the Department of State are committed to enforcing President Trump's
Starting point is 00:04:46 executive orders and to protecting US national security. With also Secretary of State Marco Rubio sharing a link on X to an AP article about Khalil in writing, "'We will be revoking the visas and or green cards "'of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported.'" And then today we saw Trump himself chiming in on Truth Social writing that Khalil had been apprehended
Starting point is 00:05:02 and that his arrest was just the first of many to come. And adding that his administration knows of more students who have engaged in what he called pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity and claiming without evidence there that many are not students, they are paid agitators. With Trump then going on to say, "'We will find, apprehend, and deport
Starting point is 00:05:18 "'these terrorist sympathizers from our country, "'never to return again.'" But very notably here, none of those official statements have said what specific crimes Khalil had actually been charged with. And that ends up being super significant because experts say that it is true that DHS can revoke green cards
Starting point is 00:05:31 and deport their holders for a wide range of criminal activity, including support for a terror group. While the agency's statement seems to indicate that they are trying to revoke his green card on those grounds, it's been widely reported, including in the same AP article Rubio shared that Khalil hasn't actually been charged with a crime.
Starting point is 00:05:46 And according to the AP, his arrest appears to stem from an investigation by a Columbia University office that has brought disciplinary charges against many. With Khalil potentially facing sanctions for helping to organize a quote, unauthorized marching event where participants glorified Hamas' October 7th attack, as well as playing what they called a substantial role in circulating social media posts criticizing Zionism
Starting point is 00:06:03 in addition to other acts of alleged discrimination. But as of right now, from what we've seen, those are just allegations under investigation. And even if he's found to be culpable, we're talking about disciplinary action from the university, not necessarily anything with actual immediate legal implication. Which is why with all this,
Starting point is 00:06:17 you have so many experts questioning the legality of this move and some just calling it blatantly unconstitutional. And so with all this, we've seen many arguing that he's just being detained for protesting and expressing views protected by free speech. And that criticism notably has even come from within the halls of Columbia.
Starting point is 00:06:30 We're seeing the director of the Immigrants Rights Clinic at Columbia Law School saying that revoking Khalil's green card in retaliation for his public speech, that is prohibited by the First Amendment of the US Constitution. One legal expert even going a step further telling CBS, if he's a green card holder, slam dunk, there's no way to arrest him.
Starting point is 00:06:45 He had not been charged with a crime, or if he's, you know, if there's something more than that, really there's no way. Number one, because you're dealing with a legal resident alien, which means you're dealing with the green card holder who has a lot of rights in our country." Right in this is you've had others questioning
Starting point is 00:06:57 what legal authority the Trump administration would even have to revoke green cards, noting that usually such an action would require a hearing before an immigration judge. But then, of course, beyond what the experts have been saying, we've also seen a massive reaction to the arrest online, with one example being a petition for his release getting more than a million signatures online as of recording. Many also slamming the move in posts, including big names like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who tweeted,
Starting point is 00:07:19 if the federal government can disappear a legal U.S. permanent resident without reason or warrant, then they can disappear US citizens too. Anyone, left, right, or center, who has highlighted the importance of constitutional rights and free speech should be sounding the alarm now. And to her point there, we've seen people across the political spectrum raising concerns.
Starting point is 00:07:35 I mean, for example, you even had right-wing Ann Coulter tweeting, "'There's almost no one I don't want to deport, "'but unless they've committed a crime, "'isn't this a violation of the First Amendment?' But also very notably on the other side, we've seen plenty of people and groups praising this move, including the Columbia Jewish Alumni Association,
Starting point is 00:07:50 which applauded Khalil's detention in a series of posts on X. With him claiming that he was a ringleader of the chaos at Columbia, you also had the Anti-Defamation League cheering on the arrest, writing, "'We appreciate the Trump administration's broad, "'bold set of efforts to counter campus antisemitism, "'and this action further illustrates that resolve
Starting point is 00:08:06 by holding alleged perpetrators responsible for their actions. Though notably, even they seem to acknowledge the questionable legal ground here, adding that any deportation action or revocation of a green card or visa must be undertaken in alignment with required due process protections. Very notably, we ended up seeing the ADL
Starting point is 00:08:21 getting some flak for that post from many, including major commentators like Pisan Paigiker, who shared that post and wrote, The ADL thinks it's okay to revoke the green card of student activists. This is supposed to be a civil rights organization, by the way. But for now, you know, that is where we are. Of course, this is a developing situation. Things are subject to change. So while we keep an eye on this, in the meantime, I got to pass the question off to you.
Starting point is 00:08:40 What are your thoughts here? Depending on where you go online, drastically different reactions. We've seen people cheering on the move, horrified by the move. I mean, you've even seen takes with thousands of likes of people blaming Joe Biden for this, saying that he's complicit in what the Trump administration is moving to do today. Any and all takes, any and all reasoning, I'd love to hear from you in those comments. But then shifting gears to a very different news story today, let's talk about Diddy, Drewski, and Odell Beckham Jr. Because a complaint that was
Starting point is 00:09:05 filed by a woman by the name of Ashley Parham back in October has now been amended to include the last two's names. With a suit originally claiming Diddy overheard Ashley tell one of his friends that she believed Diddy was partially responsible for Tupac's murder. But then Diddy allegedly saying she would pay for that comment. And about a month after this incident, that same friend apparently invited Ashley to his home, only for Diddy to then show up with the suit claiming that he and others raped her. And the now amended version of the suit goes into incredibly explicit details about the alleged assault. With page six saying they obtained a copy, and in this, Diddy allegedly instructed Druski to rape Ashley. But before doing so, it's alleged that he doused her with oil and jumped on her, treating it like a slip and slide and knocking the wind out of her. The suit also claiming that during the alleged assault,
Starting point is 00:09:46 she heard the defendants refer to someone else who allegedly raped her as Cornelius. And she has reportedly now learned that that was OBJ with his full name being Odell Cornelius Beckham Jr. And this incident reportedly didn't stop after the alleged assault. Right according to Variety, Ashley left the apartment carrying a knife
Starting point is 00:10:00 that was used to threaten her earlier and then allegedly stabbed Diddy in the back with it, prompting gunshots to fire. She then fled the scene and allegedly ran into a man pretending to be a law enforcement, but was really a Diddy associate. Multiple outlets also said that she reported the incident to the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department,
Starting point is 00:10:14 but they gave a statement to USA Today saying the claims they investigated were unfounded, though they did not go into the nature of the report. The outlet also said that Ashley got a rape kit done at a hospital and reported the allegation to the Walnut Creek Police during that, though she apparently did not name Diddy there, right? And so with all this, notably Diddy previously denied the claims against him, and now both Druski and OBJ are doing the same. With Druski writing, this allegation is a fabricated
Starting point is 00:10:36 lie. I wasn't a public figure in 2018. I was broke, living with my mom without any connections to the entertainment industry at the time of this allegation, so the inclusion of my name is truly outlandish." And going on to say, my heart breaks for actual victims of abuse, but I'm fully confident that the evidence will expose this falsehood and the individuals who are maliciously trying to game the legal system
Starting point is 00:10:54 to peddle false narratives. And this is OBJ responded to that post by writing, "'Boy, I'll tell you what, this world makes absolutely no sense. I am covered by God. He will prevail. I know who I am. I know who you are. Keep your head. That name will be cleared. Shit's stupid.
Starting point is 00:11:08 In all of this, as you people noting, this isn't the first time big names have been brought up in the mounting cases against Diddy here. With, for example, Jay-Z being named in a lawsuit last year, but that has since been withdrawn, and Jay-Z is actually now suing the former accuser and her lawyer. Though this obviously, as there are dozens of suits against Diddy, and that on top of the indictment that he's facing and currently behind bars over. With notably that trial set to start at the beginning of May which is really just around the corner now. And then, you know, we'll get to more news in just a moment. Starting point is 00:12:26 But then from that next step today, we need to talk about Mark Carney. And that because Canada's Liberal Party just elected the guy to be its new leader. Because Justin Trudeau, the current prime minister, resigned as party leader back in January after nearly a decade in office. And notably after becoming deeply unpopular
Starting point is 00:12:40 due to a number of issues. Some of the biggest ones being a nationwide housing crisis and the rising cost of living. But after all that, Carney notably won the party election in a landslide, taking more than 85% of the vote. With more than 150,000 people reportedly casting ballots in the race, and now he's expected to be sworn in as prime minister sometime this week.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Now, one of the things that's a standout here is that Carney has actually never served in elected office. In fact, he'll be only the second prime minister in Canadian history without a seat in parliament. And because of that, he's expected to call an election soon after being sworn in, especially because if not, opposition parties could force one with a no confidence vote later this month.
Starting point is 00:13:13 But really, either way, Carney and his party may benefit from having it as soon as possible, which is actually a wild thing to be saying because just a few months ago, it seemed almost impossible to imagine any sort of scenario that didn't involve them getting absolutely smacked in the face in the next election. But I mean, back in January, when Trudeau resigned, the rival conservative party was up by more than 20 points in the polls. But now what we've seen are liberals riding a wave of national unity sparked by Donald Trump,
Starting point is 00:13:36 his tariffs, and his threats to annex the country. And so you've got polls showing the two parties now neck and neck. And as far as support for Carney in particular, in polling, he is reportedly widely viewed as the most trusted federal leader to navigate the current trade crisis because of his extensive economic background. He ran the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013, steering the institution
Starting point is 00:13:54 through the global financial crisis. And then in 2013, he became the first non-Brit to head up the Bank of England since its founding in 1694. And in that capacity, he oversaw UK monetary policy through Brexit. But in any case, on the flip side, the popularity of Carney's conservative party counterpart, notably, may be suffering as a result
Starting point is 00:14:09 of his perceived similarities to Donald Trump. And in fact, you had Carney in his victory speech criticizing his opponent for being too complimentary of Trump in the past. So Donald Trump thinks, thinks he can weaken us with his plan to divide and conquer. Pierre Poilievre's plan will leave us divided and ready to be conquered. Because a person who worships at the altar of Donald Trump will kneel before him, not stand up to him.
Starting point is 00:14:50 You know, with that, a good chunk of Carney's speech focused on Trump, including what he described as his unjustified tariffs. He's attacking Canadian families, workers and businesses, and we cannot let him succeed. And we won't. And to that point, Carney announced that he would continue the retaliatory tariffs Canada has put in place, saying my government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect and until they can join us in making credible and reliable commitments to free and fair trade. Carney also addressed Trump's threats to annex Canada and make it the 51st state. America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form. We didn't ask for this fight. We didn't ask for this fight. But Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.
Starting point is 00:15:35 So the Americans, they should make no mistake. In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win. But also, you know, it should be noted that Carney touched on other issues as well. Like for example, one of the biggest issues facing his country is how and whether to use its vast natural resources, including oil, gas, and coal, as well as a fertilizer ingredient called potash,
Starting point is 00:15:55 rare minerals and uranium needed for nuclear energy. Also, as in the US, immigration has been a major issue in Canada. So with that, you had Carney pledging to secure the country's borders, which notably is also a key demand of Trump, who has accused Canada of failing to control the flow of migrants and fentanyl going south. Although to be clear there, there's not a whole lot of either one coming into the US through the northern border. In general, border crossings are down and
Starting point is 00:16:15 the fentanyl crisis is improving. But also talking about Canada specifically, just 0.2% of fentanyl seizures at the border are on the Canadian side. And only one and a half percent of border control encounters with migrants happen there. And what's more, on the topic of things that Trump has said that just are not true, that he has said to try and justify his plans, I mean, Trump has wildly exaggerated the size of the US trade deficit with Canada,
Starting point is 00:16:34 with him reportedly claiming that it's somewhere around 200 billion, sometimes even describing it as a subsidy when in fact the real deficit is in the neighborhood of around $40 billion. But you know, with that, we're gonna have to wait and see what happens, both with these elections that are sure to happen soon in Canada,
Starting point is 00:16:47 and also how that and other things shape the country's relations with the US from here. But then, next up in some big international news, we gotta talk about some of the worst violence we've seen in Syria in years. Because according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 1300 people have been killed in Syria over the past several days,
Starting point is 00:17:03 including at least 973 civilians. But the group also reporting that the vast majority of civilians killed have been killed in Syria over the past several days, including at least 973 civilians. With the group also reporting that the vast majority of civilians killed have been Alawites, which is a minority sect, an offshoot of Shia Islam, making up roughly 10% of the country's population. And notably, the Assad family, who ruled Syria for more than half a century, belonged to the Alawite community. With that meaning, members of the group often ended up dominating the ruling class in the upper ranks of the military.
Starting point is 00:17:23 And of course, with that, there is also evidence that Alawite security officers were involved in the atrocity of the Assad regime, including the killing and torturing of thousands of civilians. Within all of that, fueling sectarian hatred toward the Alawite community, even those who had nothing to do with any of it.
Starting point is 00:17:36 And that brings us back to the events of the past few days, because the killings have largely taken place in the coastal provinces of Tartus and Latakia, the main home to Syria's Alawite community, and also an area once seen as a bastion of support for the Assad regime. And notably, some Assad loyalists there and elsewhere have refused to give up arms,
Starting point is 00:17:51 with some reports suggesting they're now forming a resistance group in the mountains. In fact, a former high-ranking officer in Assad's army has reportedly announced a new rebellion against the current government, claiming he's establishing the military council for the liberation of Syria. And last Thursday, some Assad loyalists
Starting point is 00:18:05 ambushed and killed members of the Sunni rebel group that led the rebellion that ousted the former Syrian leader. And so in response, security forces responded by sending reinforcements to the region, but also they were reportedly joined by armed supporters who were more interested in revenge, with residents who spoke to the Washington Post
Starting point is 00:18:18 reportedly describing the militants as roaming house to house, killing occupants in summary executions and pillaging what they could find. And this is there are plenty of reports and videos circulating documenting atrocities that have taken place with, of course, everyone now worried about where things
Starting point is 00:18:31 are gonna go from here, right? Ahmed Alshara, also known as Abu Muhammad Al-Jalani is the country's interim president. He was also the head of the rebel group that led the operation to Al-Sasad in December, which is a group that was once affiliated with Al-Qaeda, which of course had a lot of people skeptical when he came to power and promised to lead a more unified
Starting point is 00:18:46 and inclusive government representative of the country's diverse religious and ethnic groups. So now this latest violence, it's raising serious questions about both whether he's willing and whether he is able to rein in the various armed factions still operating across the country. Right on one hand, he's vowed to hunt down anyone involved
Starting point is 00:19:00 in harming civilians, also forming a committee to investigate the violence. But then even as the state has tried to distance itself from the killings, it's not clear that there weren't at least some government forces involved. There were some witnesses reportedly saying the gunmen were indistinguishable from government forces, and others also noting that foreign fighters
Starting point is 00:19:15 appeared to be among them. But you know, with all that, the Syrian government's now saying that its official operation in the region has ended, claiming that its forces neutralized Assad loyalists in several towns and were paving the way for life to return to normal. But there have also now been skirmishes in the capital of Damascus,
Starting point is 00:19:28 which seem to have been contained, but have just added to the fears that the violence isn't really over. For now, you know, really, we're gonna have to wait to see how this plays out. But then from that, for your once daily DeFranco-recommended good news vitamin of the day, I'd like you to meet Jackie Dennis.
Starting point is 00:19:41 You see, she's a special education teacher at Huron High School in New Boston, Michigan. And back in 2020, she was 36 weeks pregnant with her daughter, Mia, when she went into the hospital with a cough, a headache, and breathing problems. Turns out she had COVID and was admitted to the hospital. And a week later, the doctors decided to induce labor
Starting point is 00:19:56 and Mia was born. But Jackie's health, it took a turn for the worse, right? She developed pneumonia and her lungs were rapidly deteriorating. And she actually ended up spending a little more than a month on life support before she received a double lung transplant. With the medical director of the lung transplant program at the hospital saying, her lungs were completely destroyed by this inflammatory response to the virus and without the transplant, she would not
Starting point is 00:20:14 have been able to be alive. But because of that transplant, Jackie was able to return to work and raise her daughter. And in the years since her surgery, Jackie has always remembered the gift that she was given and what the cost of that was. Saying that she regularly contacts her donor's family. I'm lucky enough to have such a good relationship that I can send pictures of my daughter. I can send pictures of what my students are doing and I can just show her the impact that her daughter has made on me
Starting point is 00:20:37 and her little sisters get to see that and that's so beautiful. So this year in remembrance and gratitude, Jackie organized a workshop for the students of Huron High to make comfort blankets for the loved ones of organ donors. They're saying that while many families of donors don't have any contact with the recipient of the donation, these blankets will hopefully help them understand
Starting point is 00:20:53 how grateful that recipient is. And when looking at it, this event seems to have impacted the kids participating as much as Jackie herself. With for example, one of the organizing students saying it meant a lot that so many of her classmates wanted to step in and adding that Jackie is quote, "'A kind person. And I'm really glad that the whole community of students has stepped up to help around. You know, hopefully this can serve as a small little daily
Starting point is 00:21:12 reminder that while the world may feel like it's constantly on fire, there's still so many good people out there. And just looking at this story, yes, Jackie Dennis is a BAMF living and after death donors. They are BAMFfs. People that care and then do something about it, even if it's just something like making a comfort blanket, you are a bamf. You know, we exist in this world where it feels like things are just constantly happening and people are saying a bunch of shit. And it's just very easy to forget. There are so many people that then do something, whether it be to support another or even save another. But then finally today, let's talk about y'all's comments on that last show and some comment commentary.
Starting point is 00:21:48 And the big standout was just how positive the comment section was. With a lot of the conversation just really centering around the feel good story. With y'all saying, thank you, thank you, thank you for the story about David and Christina. Saying more than any of your good news stories this week, this one hit hard, no victims, no exploitation,
Starting point is 00:22:03 just good people being good people. Queen Mimic saying, love the video store story, autism runs in my family and I don't think people often understand how damaging routine changes can be. And adding, when my autistic cousin got diagnosed with cancer at age four, he had a really hard time not being able to go to school anymore, but his teachers did everything they could for it.
Starting point is 00:22:18 People who take the time to notice and care are angels. And Victarra is sounding off saying, gotta be real, the story about Dave's video store and Christina had me tearing up. As a neurodivergent person who has set routines, I get how important the video store was to Christina. Starting point is 00:22:34 people are capable of. We should all try to follow Dave's example. True bamf." But then, you know, separately from that, there was a lot of conversation around Trump, Trudeau, all that mess. Age Believer saying, "'The irony of Trump saying Trudeau
