Starting point is 00:00:00 Presidents Trump and Bukele say they will not return the man wrongly deported to El Salvador's so-called torture prison as Trump leaned into the idea of sending American citizens as well. We've got disturbing updates to the Josh Shapiro assassination attempt. Feral Minecraft movie chaos as people pissed off and saying the theaters are negotiating with terrorists as it becomes the biggest movie of the year. And then a positive news story to help keep you sane. We're talking about all that and much more on today's brand new Philip DeFranco show. A lot we have to talk about today, starting with
Starting point is 00:01:01 this. This White House press conference today started off crazy and then just went off the rails. Because today you had President Trump hosting Salvador and President Nayib Bukele at the Oval Office, where they celebrated the deportation of immigrants from the U.S. to El Salvador. Deportations mostly of Venezuelan migrants, which critics, among other things, have called inhumane because they're now in a high-security prison that have been likened to a forced labor camp. A move that also many have called illegal because a judge ordered a plane carrying migrants there to turn around and come back, with the White House then ignoring them
Starting point is 00:01:28 and Bukele posting, oopsie, too late. So what you saw at today's event where some reporters taking the opportunity to ask both men about that, and specifically, Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Right, that Maryland man whom the White House previously said was mistakenly deported due to an administrative error.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Reportedly, he's a father of three with no criminal record and a court order shielded him from deportation. And so with that, you had a federal court ordering the White House to facilitate and effectuate his return. But we saw the White House resist saying that it would do so if the Supreme Court ordered it to, which is what happened. You had the Supreme Court upholding the lower court's order.
Starting point is 00:01:56 But then what you saw is that on Sunday, the White House argued in a court filing that it was still not obligated to actually help the man get back home, which then brings us to today where you had someone asking Bukele directly if he would let Abrego Garcia go. I mean, the question is preposterous.
Starting point is 00:02:10 How can I smuggle a terrorist into the United States? I don't have the power to return him to the United States. But you could release him inside and out of the country. Yeah, but I'm not releasing, I mean, we're not very fond of releasing terrorists into our country. So you have Bukele claiming he doesn't have the power to return Abrego Garcia, the White House claiming it doesn't have the power to return a Brego Garcia,
Starting point is 00:02:27 the White House claiming it doesn't have the power either, and Attorney General Pam Bondi saying- That's up to El Salvador if they want to return him. That's not up to us. Right, and also during this, you had White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller claiming that Garcia was an MS-13 member, that he was illegal, and that the White House was obligated to deport him.
Starting point is 00:02:42 It's very arrogant even for American media to suggest that we would even tell El Salvador how to handle their own citizens as a starting point. This issue was then, by a district court judge, completely inverted. And a district court judge tried to tell the administration that they had to kidnap a citizen of El Salvador and fly him back here. That issue was raised with the Supreme Court. And the Supreme Court said the district court order was unlawful, and its main components were reversed 9-0 unanimously, stating clearly that neither Secretary of State nor the President could be compelled by anybody to
Starting point is 00:03:17 forcibly retrieve a citizen of El Salvador from El Salvador, who again is a member of MS-13. But then you had Secretary of State Marco Rubio seeming to suggest the president can deport people whether the courts agree or not. The foreign policy of the United States is conducted by the president of the United States, not by a court. And no court in the United States has a right
Starting point is 00:03:36 to conduct the foreign policy of the United States. And you know, you had Stephen Miller immediately agreeing with that. And so you had many saying it's unclear whether he thinks they've been okayed by the judiciary or the judiciary's opinion just doesn't matter. But when a reporter sought clarification from Trump himself, this happened. Mr. President, you said that if the Supreme Court said someone needed to be returned, that you would abide by that. You said that on Air Force One just a few
Starting point is 00:03:55 days ago. And they said that it must be facilitated. Why don't you just say, isn't it wonderful that we're keeping criminals out of our country? Why can't you just say that? Why do you go over and over? And that's why nobody watches you anymore. You have no credibility. Please go ahead. And then, when the next reporter asked how many illegal immigrants he wants to send to El Salvador, he replied, as many as possible, and even seemed to suggest that US citizens should go as well. We also have homegrown criminals that push people into subways that hit elderly ladies on the back of the head with a baseball bat when they're not looking that are absolute monsters. I'd like to include them in the group of people
Starting point is 00:04:37 to get them out of the country, but you'll have to be looking at the laws on that, Steve. And when a reporter asked him to clarify if he meant US citizens, he was like, yeah, duh. Yeah, yeah, that includes them. What do you think, there's special category of person? They're as bad as anybody that comes in. We have bad ones too.
Starting point is 00:04:54 And so for a lot of people, this felt like watching America slowly becoming a police state, and now even citizens, not to mention legal immigrants, are scared. But for now, while we wait to see how this continues to play out, I gotta pass a question off to you.
Starting point is 00:05:05 What are your thoughts here? Because as I often say, yes, this is a new show, but I also want it to be a conversation, and some of your comments may pop up in tomorrow's show. But then, next up from that, we got the news that the White House just murdered thousands of innocent people on paper. Right, and what I mean there
Starting point is 00:05:18 is that the Trump administration selected over 6,300 immigrants, revoked their temporary legal status, and then declared them legally dead. And they're doing this by moving their names and social security numbers, which they had reportedly obtained legally into the death master file,
Starting point is 00:05:31 a social security database of deceased people. And as anyone who has mistakenly been declared dead intimately knows, this completely turns your life inside out with experts even likening it to digital murder and being financially paralyzed overnight. And this is because the database is used by government agencies, employers, banks, creditors, and landlords to check the status of people they work with.
Starting point is 00:05:49 So if you're falsely declared dead, you could be cut off from your legal employment, your bank accounts, your credit cards, your government benefits, your insurance, and your loans, meaning that your home could be foreclosed on, which is why you have experts telling the New York Times and the Washington Post that this move by the White House is clearly illegal.
Starting point is 00:06:02 Right, I mean, first of all, it strips living people of privacy protections on the presumption that they're dead. With us seeing an attorney here telling the post that social security sells its death information to creditors, pension companies, life insurers, and credit reporting firms. And then secondly, if done knowingly, which the White House has admitted is true,
Starting point is 00:06:17 the move could amount to illegally falsifying government records. I mean, just to be clear about what's happening here, sources told the Times that the immigrants were given fake dates of death. And this is, according to the Post, agency staff had been warned that this might happen as early as February, right?
Starting point is 00:06:30 Because they realized that anybody granted the appropriate permissions could just arbitrarily declare people dead without having to actually prove the death, you know, by, for example, citing medical records or a death certificate. But apparently, that flaw wasn't patched, and so now over 6,000 people have effectively
Starting point is 00:06:42 been made non-persons to get them to self-deport. Though this is, reportedly reportedly at least some officials recognize the illegality of what was happening and tried to resist. For example, a senior administrator who oversaw a staff of hundreds of technology experts reportedly pushing back against Scott Coulter, an investment firm founder installed
Starting point is 00:06:57 as the new chief information officer by Elon Musk last month, telling him that the plan was illegal, cruel, and risked declaring the wrong people dead according to three sources. But then last Thursday, security guards reportedly showed up at the administrator's office in the agency's Maryland headquarters
Starting point is 00:07:08 and marched him out of the building. With the Post then reporting that he was placed on paid leave, possibly severing his 25-year career. And to be clear, the White House is not denying that it did all this. We have the press secretary claiming that in declaring immigrants dead,
Starting point is 00:07:20 they were just protecting lawful American citizens and their hard-earned social security benefits and ensuring illegal immigrants will no longer receive such economic entitlements. And then adding, anyone who disagrees with the common sense policies of this administration can find a new job. And so the White House claims
Starting point is 00:07:33 that the people it's declared dead are convicted criminals and suspected terrorists. But this is, it hasn't provided any evidence of those claims or explained how it concluded that. And we've already learned from the post that the affected migrants include a 13-year-old, a 14-year-old, two 16 year olds, and one person in their 80s and a handful in their 70s.
Starting point is 00:07:48 But then also the Times reporting, in addition to the 13 year old, there were seven other minors. And in case you're wondering, reportedly some agency staff have since checked some of the youngest immigrants against data that the agency typically uses to search for criminal history and they didn't find anything.
Starting point is 00:08:00 And this is a thing to keep in mind is by all accounts, these were not illegal immigrants. They were people who entered the country and obtained their social security numbers lawfully. And as we wait to see how all this plays out, you have some officials saying that the White House is going to expand the death database method to even more people. And pretty soon, a lot more are about to become potential targets, especially because over half a million Cubans, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, and Haitians who arrived under Biden's parole program are set to lose their legal status this month. And the government has already begun revoking parole
Starting point is 00:08:25 for nearly a million more people who entered the US using the CBP-1 app. This also is at the same time we're seeing legal challenges brewing. For example, the Social Security General Counsel's Office reportedly preparing an opinion that the death database move violates privacy law. And that is a lawsuit already filed against the agency
Starting point is 00:08:38 is now using this news to argue that the White House violated a temporary restraining order blocking those from the agency systems with personally identifiable information. But also, you know, while this is particularly shocking, I mean, this death database thing, it's just one way that Trump is repurposing government agencies for immigration enforcement.
Starting point is 00:08:53 Like in February, for example, Social Security reportedly agreed to hand over the latest known addresses of nearly 100,000 people to the Department of Homeland Security, which is something that officials say has never happened on this scale before. And then you've got things like the news that the Treasury agreed to hand over tax data to the DHS
Starting point is 00:09:07 so they could track down and deport migrants, with the acting head of the IRS even recently resigning over the move. But for now, we'll have to wait to see how this continues to evolve. But then, shifting gears from that, next up, we gotta talk about this Minecraft movie chaos. Because while Minecraft is in movie theaters
Starting point is 00:09:20 all across the country, it just beat out the new Captain America to become the biggest box office hit of the year so far in the US. With it in just 10 days making $280 million domestically, earning $550 million globally, it has also come with a healthy side portion of anarchy. Or with clips popping up online
Starting point is 00:09:36 of things like Jack Black's character shouting, "'Chicken jockeys!'' Something's happened in the movie. People in the theater just going absolutely batshit crazy, screaming, jumping, throwing popcorn. Sometimes people climbing on each other's shoulders. And in at least one case, someone brought a real chicken. All of which, as you can imagine, at the very least creates quite a mess in the theater, which is a former usher. Go fuck yourself for that. And while obviously every show is now full mayhem, it's been such a big deal. I mean, we're seeing things like a theater
Starting point is 00:10:00 in New Jersey banning unaccompanied kids from seeing the movie without adult supervision. With the theater also giving a little parenting lecture on Facebook, writing, large groups of unsupervised boys engaged in completely unacceptable behavior, including vandalism. If your son was at Township Theater last night, we strongly encourage you to have a conversation with him about his behavior.
Starting point is 00:10:15 Also, you had local news in Alaska reporting the police had to escort a group of teenage boys out of a theater over their behavior. And according to the Salt Lake Tribune, in the case of the people who brought a real life chicken, they were kicked out as well. And this is other theaters have had to issue general warnings about bad behavior during the film. And so with this, we've seen a lot of people sounding off online, writing things like, buying a huge bag of popcorn just so you can piss the cinema workers
Starting point is 00:10:34 off when Jack Black says chicken jockey is frankly quite insane and rude. Right, arguing that it's disrespectful both to the people who just wanted to watch the movie with their families and to the people who work minimum wage jobs in the theater. But this also is some have defended the trend, including the movie's director, Jared Hess. With him, for example, telling Entertainment Weekly, "'I'm just so happy that people are finding joy "'in going back to cinemas and seeing things as a community, "'as a group of people.
Starting point is 00:10:55 "'It's like we've become so isolated on our devices "'and it's just fun to experience things "'as a group of human beings.'" And it's funny because I think it's just literally cheering and throwing popcorn, which is so funny to me that cops are being called for popcorn, but man, I'm just glad people are making memories with their friends and families.
Starting point is 00:11:09 You also had some tweets noting that Jack Black visited a theater recently and warned against throwing popcorn and joining the chicken jockey trend. With that, based on the video, some have argued that it seems less like a reprimand and more like him joining in on the joke. Please, no throwing popcorn, and also no lapis lazuli, and also absolutely no chicken jockeys!
Starting point is 00:11:35 I am Steve. Right, and all of this playing out as the film again has been a huge box office hit. And in fact, another thing that we're seeing are theaters trying to find kind of a happy medium. With for example, Regal Movie Theater is announcing so-called chicken jockey screening. It's in 40X, so it has those chairs that are moving around
Starting point is 00:11:57 and they tweeted, dress up as your favorite Minecraft characters, whoop, yelp, clap and shout chicken jockey. Which hey, if you can compartmentalize the chaos, I think that could be a happy middle ground. Though you also have people online equating this to Regal negotiating with terrorists. You know, with this, I also got to pass the question
Starting point is 00:12:11 off to you, what are your thoughts? Also, if you went to the theater, what was your experience? For me, I brought my kids the first Friday that it was out. It was a packed theater. There were a lot of kids. There were like, there was some excitement and cheering, but there was nothing crazy. But this movie, like it definitely found its audience. Like there were like middle school age children standing up at the end,

But then next up from that, we got to talk about how someone tried to kill Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro by lighting his house on fire while he and his family were asleep inside.
Starting point is 00:13:42 According to the Dauphin County District Attorney's Office, video surveillance showed the man climbing over a wall and entering the grounds of the mansion at around 2 a.m. With him then successfully evading the governor's security detail outside the residence, then using a hammer to break a window of the mansion, and then throw a Molotov cocktail into the residence. With it igniting what officials described
Starting point is 00:14:00 as a substantial fire, and then after that, he moved to another window and was able to enter the residence where he then started two more fires with two other Molotov cocktails before fleeing over the same wall. And when police said that the fires caused significant damage to the mansion, thankfully, the governor and his family were safely evacuated and no one was injured
Starting point is 00:14:15 during the attack. Now with that, as far as the suspect, according to a police affidavit, a woman who identified herself as his ex-partner contacted the authorities to tell them that he had confessed to the attack. And not long after that, the man turned himself in to state police and admitted that he had started the fires.
Starting point is 00:14:28 With then state troopers arresting and charging him with attempted homicide, aggravated arson, burglary, reckless endangerment, terrorism, loitering, and two counts of aggravated assault. Now notably, officials have not yet publicly released a motive for the attack, but what we've seen is that the affidavit says that he admitted that he harbored hatred for Shapiro
Starting point is 00:14:44 and that he knew it was possible Shapiro and his family were inside the mansion and could have been harmed by his actions. And actually, when the authorities asked the man what he would have done if he had found Shapiro inside, he told them he would have beaten him with his hammer. But beyond that, we generally don't know a lot about this man right now. According to reports, he describes himself as a certified master mechanic on social media and has a criminal record, and he has had several run-ins with the law in Pennsylvania. And in addition to several traffic violations, multiple outlets have reported
Starting point is 00:15:08 that he was charged with forgery in 2015 and sentenced to 18 years of probation. Also in 2023, he was charged with assault, a pending charge for which he was scheduled to appear in court this week. You also had NBC reporting that he pleaded guilty to forgery again in 2016. And beyond that, it's also been reported
Starting point is 00:15:22 that he was critical of the government on social media and shared various anti-Joe Biden posts with NBC, writing that he seemed to reject Biden's 2020 presidential win. But this is also at USA Today, claiming that the man does not appear to be a Trump supporter either, noting at least one post where he wrote a disparaging thing about Trump and other political leaders more broadly. But of course, with stories like this, it is a developing one, so new information will continue to pour in as the investigations continue. And in fact, just this morning, you had state police saying in a press release that the man had been taken to the hospital
Starting point is 00:15:48 and was receiving treatment due to a medical event not connected to the incident or his arrest. And with all this, as far as how Governor Shapiro has responded, we saw him describing his version of events in an emotional press conference yesterday in front of the visibly damaged residents. Last night at approximately two o'clock in the morning,
Starting point is 00:16:07 while my family and I were asleep upstairs here at the governor's residence, one of the state troopers assigned to our detail banged on our door, woke us up and told us we had an emergency and needed to leave immediately. Together, we secured all of our children, our two dogs, our family that was staying with us, and the troopers safely evacuated us from the governor's residence. Last night, we experienced an attack not just on our family, but on the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, here at the governor's residence. With Shapiro then going on to say that the attack was targeted,
Starting point is 00:16:51 and he gave this very passionate statement. This type of violence is not okay. This kind of violence is becoming far too common in our society. And I don't give a damn if it's coming from one particular side or the other. Directed at one particular party or another or one particular person or another. It is not okay. And it has to stop. We have to be better than this.
Starting point is 00:17:29 And we have a responsibility to all be better. We then also saw the governor going on to raise the possibility that the attack could have been motivated by anti-Semitism, with him noting that it came just hours after he and his family had hosted a Seder to celebrate Passover. If he was trying to terrorize our family, our friends, the Jewish community who joined us for a Passover Seder in that room last night. Hear me on this. We celebrated our faith last night proudly, and in a few hours, we will celebrate our second Seder of Passover again proudly. No one will deter me or my family or any Pennsylvanian from celebrating their faith openly and proudly. And throughout the entire presser, we saw the governor repeatedly applauding law enforcement for their response and adding that the FBI is also investigating the situation and thanking both President Trump and FBI Director Kash Patel for their support. Though also to that point,
Starting point is 00:18:29 you had state police leaders saying that there will be a security review to prevent future incidents. And this is, at least publicly, it's unclear right now how the man was able to get into the property and enter the mansion without getting stopped by Shapiro's security details. You know, there's a lot of moving parts
Starting point is 00:18:41 and unknowns right now. But also as this plays out, we've seen many other politicians from both sides of the aisle condemning acts of political violence. For this, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who issued a statement slamming the act and adding, Political violence of any kind is never acceptable, and it is especially unconscionable to attack a Jewish family during the first night of Passover. Everyone responsible must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. You also had Vice President J.D. Vance echoing that and posting on X. Thanks be to God that Governor Shapiro and his family were unharmed in this attack.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Really disgusting violence, and I hope whoever did it is brought swiftly to justice. And that is, while, you know, other people in the administration have made very similar remarks, expressing relief that Shapiro and his family were safe, Trump himself had a, we'll call it a different approach. For example, late last night, nearly a full day after the attack, reporters asking Trump if he had a comment on the arson with him responding, "'I just heard about it.
Starting point is 00:19:29 No, I'll have to look into it.'" And then when asked about the matter during a press conference today, Trump focused on distancing himself from the attacker. The attacker was not a fan of Trump, I understand, just from what I read and from what I've been told. The attacker basically wasn't a fan of anybody. He's probably just a whack job.
Starting point is 00:19:46 And certainly a thing like that cannot be allowed to happen. So you had a lot of people saying he seemed more focused on not getting kind of tied to the attack, but also people saying, hey, at the very least, it is better than his reaction
Starting point is 00:19:56 to the Pelosi's being attacked. You know, like I said, this is a developing situation. There are investigations underway. And so we'll have to keep our eyes out for new information. But then from that, next up,
Starting point is 00:20:05 what the hell is going on with tariffs? Right, that is what more and more have been asking, especially after the latest confusion starting last Friday when US Customs and Border Protection announced a huge list of electronics that would be exempt from the massive tariffs that Trump enacted. A list that included pretty much every electronic
Starting point is 00:20:19 that consumers could think of, and it was a welcome surprise for many people, especially as critics have long claimed that targeting electronics just didn't make a ton of sense. Because if the tariffs are supposed to drive up US production of these goods, you'd think it was even possible to make them in the US. But really, until US manufacturing and workers
Starting point is 00:20:33 do a lot of catching up, a lot of this is literally impossible to make here. And so for consumers and tech companies, this was all around great news. But also you had critics of the administration feeling this was a sign of weakness, writing things like, Trump just blinked. Here's a list of Chinese electronic products
Starting point is 00:20:46 "'that he exempted from tariffs late last evening. "'So no, you're not going to have to pay double "'for your next mobile phone or tablet.'" But then also adding, he also just exposed Beijing exactly where our trade weaknesses are. And this is others like Senator Chris Murphy claim, this was actually just a favor to the companies
Starting point is 00:20:59 that supported Donald Trump. So Donald Trump just announced a massive series of exemptions to the tariffs. And the exemptions are good for the multi-billion dollar companies that are paying Trump money. With Murphy then going on to say that it doesn't make sense to lift the tariff
Starting point is 00:21:15 on the high tech jobs that the US wants and keep tariffs on the other markets that the US could never sustain anyways. And then what you ended up seeing is that Trump had an issue with the way that critics like Murphy were talking about the tariffs with him writing on Truth Social. Nobody is getting off the hook for the unfair trade practices and non-monetary tariff barriers that other countries have used against us, especially not China, which by far treats us the worst.
Starting point is 00:21:35 And saying there was no tariff exception announced on Friday. With Trump then going on to say that Friday's announcement was just putting electronics, which are mostly from China, in a different tariff category. So instead of getting hit with a 145% tariff, they'd now only be getting hit with the 20% baseline tariff that Chinese products are facing. Which obviously, that is a huge difference, but also notably a 20% tariff, it's still backbreaking for many consumers and businesses. Now as far as what else we ended up seeing,
Starting point is 00:21:58 you had Trump blaming the confusion on the so-called fake news, who he claims knew that the tariffs are just being recategorized. Which brings up the question, well, did outlets lie or even lie by omission? And well, obviously, I haven't seen every single outlet that's covered this.
Starting point is 00:22:10 The major players, I mean, they generally just stayed to the facts. So for example, you had Al Jazeera reporting it as smartphones, laptops, and a host of other tech components will be spared from the Trump administration's so-called reciprocal tariffs, including steep 125% duties on imports from China, according to a notice issued by U.S.
Starting point is 00:22:25 Customs and Border Protection. You know, looking into it, nowhere in the article does it explicitly state that electronics would still be hit with a 20% tariff. And instead, it kind of relies on the reader knowing that there is a 20% baseline tariff and that the 125% increase was on top of that number. Which, you know, if you wanted to get nitpicky, it isn't really a given, especially since the Trump administration is having to clarify that. But really, to say the fake news, which is just news companies that he is not a fan of, presented the tariffs in this way, it's just not true. I mean, just looking around, CBS News explicitly stated that there would still be a 20% tariff on goods, and that was done before Trump's true social post.
Starting point is 00:22:55 And you would see NBC similarly saying that a 20% tariff would still be around, and that was even going out on a limb because at the time, the White House hadn't given them clarification. I mean, even had the king of fake news in Trump's eyes at New York Times similarly mentioning there would still be a 20% tariff. You know, I'm not gonna hit every single outlet, but you kind of get the point. Right, overall, like this seems to be more of an issue
Starting point is 00:23:12 of people only reading headlines, which by their nature boil down the information to just the essentials. With this entire situation actually bringing up a discussion that we have internally all the time, and that is at what point is a piece of information too much? Especially on stories that are kind of continuations of news that you're covering hour to hour
Starting point is 00:23:27 and day to day already, right? How do you maximize something being consumable and information dense while not being just clunky and oversized, but also then to connect everything and tie the story off with a bow, the misunderstanding or confusion or whatever you wanna call it, it's, hey, you know that $100 electronics product
Starting point is 00:23:41 that because of my tariffs, it was gonna be $245. I didn't make it go back to $100. I made it go back to $120. And in general, it just feels like all a mess. And it's understandable why it feels like for many, it just like, they're just coming up with stuff as they go. But then switching gears from that for a different kind of news, I want you to meet your BAMF of the day, Doug Roosh. Because back in 2021, Doug was diagnosed with prostate cancer and he went through radiation twice. But then in January, he learned that his cancer had spread to the bones in his leg and his liver and it had become terminal. And so his options were to go through chemotherapy and get maybe two years or to skip treatment altogether and die in roughly 18 months. So after some
Starting point is 00:24:17 reflection, Doug decided that he wanted to spend his last days helping people, saying, I thought to myself, I have two choices. I can sit at home and wait to die, or I can go out and live.'" And that is when Doug's plan came into being, right? He was going to volunteer in every state across the country. With him calling his project Dying to Serve, and he started a GoFundMe to fundraise because he spent his life savings on cancer treatment.
Starting point is 00:24:37 So as Doug's story has spread across social media, that GoFundMe has raised thousands of dollars. With Doug quitting his job, packing up his Chevy Malibu with all his stuff, finding a good cross-country route to follow, and signing up for several shifts through several different volunteer organizations. With his journey starting in Dallas, Texas at a food pantry where he sorted, packaged, and distributed food. And since then, he's been to Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Southern and Northern California, Oregon,
Starting point is 00:25:01 and Washington State. Where he's worked at food pantries, food banks, soup kitchens, senior centers, and hospitality houses. You know, serving lunch or dinner to people who are unhoused, elderly, or medically ill, sorting and packaging goods to be donated to food pantries, and delivering meals to homebound individuals. And since kicking things off in Texas, he's driven over 4,000 miles. With him at first scheduling volunteer shifts
Starting point is 00:25:20 for every day or so, but also the physical limitations that his cancer has caused, it's forced him to drop to working a shift roughly every three days. And as he's taken this trip, he's also finding ways to do things for himself, like taking the scenic routes and going to baseball games. But also as much as he's enjoying the volunteering that he's doing, there are still things
Starting point is 00:25:35 that Doug worries about, like whether or not his health is gonna stay good enough to finish, whether his car is gonna break down, and if he can make the GoFundMe cash stretch long enough to finish his project, which to that last point, he's accepted some help along the way, taking discounts at hotels and restaurants and auto repair shops after the owners heard his story.
Starting point is 00:25:49 And right now he's headed South from Seattle and he says that he's hoping to hit the East Coast by June and then fly out to Hawaii and Alaska and hopefully finish up this project by the fall. But I'm also saying if his health keeps up after visiting every state, Doug says that he will keep on volunteering. Saying, if I can inspire hundreds
Starting point is 00:26:03 or thousands of people nationwide to volunteer, even if it's three or four hours a month, then I can die happy. And so with that, I wanna say three things. One, Doug, you've inspired me. I've thought about donating my time to an organization like this, even if it's just a few hours every month.
Starting point is 00:26:17 I'm gonna finally do it. Two, I also wanna help you a little bit on your journey, so I'm gonna give you $1,000 on your GoFundMe. Starting point is 00:26:47 which will return tomorrow, but feels kind of impossible today to do because this is the first show coming off of deep dive week where you had just four very dense episodes of deep dives that it feels, once again, impossible to just put into a small segment here at the end of the show. I wanted to do kind of a catch up and recap. And I'll start here by saying, I was happy to see that most of you love Deep Dive Week.
Starting point is 00:27:08 Lots of interesting conversation. The videos did 60 to 90% of what a PDS does. And I was like, I didn't know if I should expect like 30%. And in general, last week, there were a lot of things I learned from what we did and a lot of the testing. So for example, one, we've been playing around with the idea
Starting point is 00:27:22 of adding a sort of Sunday Philip DeFranco show, which would be two deep dives. You kind of essentially got a testing of what that format would be for a Sunday show. I likely wouldn't add that test run until the end of June. There's a lot of pre-shooting that has to happen. Additionally, two, I learned, I tested this on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of last week, that it's pretty easy to carve out around 45 minutes of downtime to shoot shorts, which we uploaded to Instagram, TikTok, and even here on this channel for the shorts. A few of those did really great numbers. And it was interesting to learn that on YouTube, if you do not see my face, the videos can still do well. But on like
Starting point is 00:27:55 TikTok and Instagram, it was pretty bad. Also, I'm not stressing it too much, but it seems like there is some sort of crackdown that's happening in the news space, or at least with select news creators. We got kicked out of their creator program while I was on break. I've seen a few other adjacent creators in the space saying that their accounts are now restricted. So we'll see what happens there. Hopefully it's a bug, a glitch, and not a feature of whatever the new TikTok is going to be. But yeah, in general, last week gave me an appreciation, both work and personal. And I was really thankful to be able to spend time with the kids, do fun stuff. Also, I mean, it was kind of like a validation of all the health changes that I've done over like the last three, almost four years now where, you know, the whole thing kicked
Starting point is 00:28:33 off because I was like, I don't know if I'm going to be able to like play with my kids and like live the dad life that I want. And I used to not be able to go out on kayaks because all the extra weight and I would mess with my back. And, you know, I was able to able to go out on kayaks because all the extra weight would mess with my back. And, you know, I was able to actually like go out with the kayaks with the kids and just like burn through it, even though it was like crazy water and wind conditions on certain days. Not in these photos. It's a beautiful day. And then at the same time, it gave me an appreciation for work where it was like, you know, when you're not or at least when I'm not in the daily hustle and bustle of the day and having to think about and manage the show and the several companies, like all the opportunity and just the privilege we have to be in this position. And then more specifically, you know, getting kind of a noise-free, distraction-free chance to think of like how you want to move things around,
Starting point is 00:29:20 evolve the show, pull certain things back, expand in different ways. And I'm going to really try and hold onto that energy because it's the difference between like having a daydream and actually having an action plan. You know, one that expands behind put wallpaper up and turn your desk and camera. But that my friends, you beautiful bastards is where your Monday show is gonna end.
