I take my three day weekend, I come back
and the first thing I see is just blatant misinformation
and or lies from the mainstream media.
Like how do we effectively combat this?
And today I'm specifically speaking to you, Kotaku.
You have the audacity to put out a headline
like you don't want Resident Evil Village's
tall vampire lady to step on your face, excuse me?
One, the fake news has gone too far.
Two, how dare you?
You don't know my life.
And three, in your article, you reveal to the masses,
you expose to the masses that your head would get crushed
as if that was the risk and not the point.
How dare you be better?
But to everyone else, hey, welcome back
to the Philip DeFranco Show.
It is Monday, April 19th, 2021.
I had to double check.
Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco Show,
your daily dive into the news.
Hit that like button, definitely subscribe.
A brand new subscriber for the month of April
will get $5,000.
But with that said, let's just jump into it.
And the first thing up today,
we have online entertainment slash business news,
starting with the what the hell even is this
Jake Paul versus Ben Askren fight
that happened over the weekend.
There, we saw Jake Paul easily beat Ben Askren
in under two minutes. Well, yes, you did have Jake Paul win. You had some saying that Ben Askren fight that happened over the weekend. There we saw Jake Paul easily beat Ben Askren in under two minutes.
Well, yes, you did have Jake Paul win.
You had some saying that Ben Askren didn't technically lose.
Some saying that the fight was rigged.
Ben Askren essentially got paid to fall.
People's reasoning seemed to be that he used to be able
to eat so many shots in the UFC from like professional,
big real-time killers.
And he got dropped so easily by Jake Paul.
Though it is important to remember he is a retired fighter
who did yes, eat all those shots,
and when you take shots like that, it takes away your chin.
But also people who believe that the fight was legitimate
saying that Ben Askren won because he got a payday
for an event that he really shouldn't have been in.
With his official purse coming in at half a million dollars
though we don't know the specifics of his deal,
if he had any backend points or anything like that.
And as far as my opinion, here's what I'll say.
I don't think that Ben Askren took a fall.
I don't think any professional fighter wants to get dropped.
As fine as Ben Askren seems to be
with people trying to troll him,
I think there is still a pride thing involved.
I don't think he would take a fall.
But yeah, too, I would argue that he got his payday.
He wins in that way.
And really the only person that lost
is if you bought the pay-per-view
in hopes of watching Jake Paul get knocked out.
Which I wouldn't be surprised
if that was an accurate descriptor for hundreds of thousands ofview in hopes of watching Jake Paul get knocked out. Which I wouldn't be surprised
if that was an accurate descriptor
for hundreds of thousands of people.
Because according to Jake Paul,
there were 1.5 million pay-per-view buys.
Saying $75 million was generated.
And that likely made Jake Paul a ton of money.
Reportedly he had a guaranteed payday of $690,000,
but he also got some of the pay-per-view buy.
Plus he has equity in Triller,
which of course put on the entire event
So just know if you're someone that hates Jake Paul and you're buying the pay-per-view that he's the headliner of you are
Benefiting him though from this event if there was kind of a people's champ from whatever the hell happened over the weekend
That would probably be Pete Davidson that in part because while trailer muted this portion of the event appeared the Pete Davidson asked Jake
About the recent sexual assault
allegations made against him to his face. Well over the course of the entire event making fun of both Ben Askren and Jake Paul
specifically roasting Jake Paul. Saying no one actually likes him, he's a piece of shit among other insults.
And so hey, at least part of the money generated by this event went to a guy that called Jake Paul out at his own thing.
But that is also kind of just a thin silver lining because you know, if you are someone that dislikes Jake Paul, you hate Jake Paul out at his own thing. But that is also kind of just a thin silver lining because you know, if you are someone that dislikes Jake Paul
you hate Jake Paul, you bought the pay-per-view
and hopes that I don't know he was gonna get
what was coming to him or he was finally gonna get caught.
He has effectively monetized your hate.
Like there's a tension and that's something
that naturally comes with news coverage
and talking about a social event.
And then there's whipping out a credit card.
I mean, that's the unfortunate truth of the situation.
So, you know, just something to think about.
Then we should talk about updates around the Dirty Dom,
David Dobrik situation.
Right, most of this, of course,
stemming from that insider report last month,
where you have a girl claiming
that she was with the vlog squad to film a video.
She was too drunk that she was assaulted by Dirty Dom.
There was a substantial fallout from all of this.
David Dobrik taking the brunt of that.
Dobrik issuing multiple apologies, losing major brand deals.
He even had to step down from his position at his own app, Dispo. the brunt of that? With Dobrik issuing multiple apologies, losing major brand deals, he even had to step down from his position
at his own app, Dispo.
And following all of that,
some of the updates that we've seen
were some of the people that actually had spoken out
about Dobrik saying that Dobrik reached out to them,
apologized them, saying that they feel
like he's being legitimate about it.
As well as many people kind of being of the mindset of,
okay, that happened with Dobrik,
that the focus needs to be back on Dirty Dom.
Right, he is the alleged perpetrator of this horrendous act.
But as far as Dom, I mean, he started posting
on social media again last week, returning on TikTok,
posting as usual as if nothing had happened.
But over the weekend, he finally acknowledged
the allegation in his Instagram story.
And it is very odd in my opinion,
because it's an apology, but not an apology in any way.
Writing, I want to sincerely apologize directly
to the women involved in this incident. I definitely empathize with the pain that everyone has suffered in any way. Writing, I want to sincerely apologize directly to the women involved in this incident.
I definitely empathize with the pain
that everyone has suffered in this matter.
But then adding, with that being said,
as far as I am concerned,
everything that occurred during the night in question
was completely consensual.
I believe the statements that have come out against me
are entirely misleading and shed an incorrect light
on my involvement.
My character is being unfairly attacked
and the statements that exist in the public eye
are unfairly defaming and assaulting
my character and reputation.
And then adding that he has donated thousands of dollars
to women rights groups to show his support
for the unjustified and unnecessary struggles
that women endure in our society on a daily basis.
And as far as my reaction to this statement,
I'm kind of at a loss.
He's apologizing for a thing that he is saying
did not happen, right?
I mean, help me if I'm reading this wrong.
It kind of sounds like he's saying, I'm sorry that you think I did this.
That must be hard for you,
even though it didn't happen as far as I'm concerned.
Also with this story, we saw the author
of the insider piece on Dom responding to this statement.
Writing first, Dom hasn't directly apologized to Hannah
or any of her friends once.
Second, Dom was sent every allegation in the story days
ahead of time to comment on on and he didn't respond.
And adding, Allie, Hannah, the anonymous women from 2017
and the women who have come forward over the past month
aren't something that can be explained away with quote,
misleading statements.
And you know, as far as ultimately my opinion,
and once again, this is an opinion and not a legal statement
this to me feels less like Dom issuing an apology
and having some sort of empathy or understanding
or maybe even learning from this event.
To me, this feels like thinly veiled victim blaming
from a disingenuous scumbag.
You had all this time and it just feels pathetic, Dom.
Hey, that's a story, some of my opinion on the matter.
And now of course I pass the question off to you.
What are your thoughts with all of this?
Then in Oh How Things Have Changed news,
we should talk about marijuana.
And this, because according to a new survey
from the Pew Research Center,
91% of US American adults believe
that marijuana should be legal.
Of that 91%, 31% believe that it should just be
for medical reasons, 60% believe for medical
and recreational reasons, and ultimately only 8% believing
that it should be illegal.
And while for many of you, you're like,
yeah, that makes sense, this is a massive change over the last two decades.
But if you compare surveys from 2000 to 2019,
the share of Americans who wanted to legalize marijuana
more than doubled.
I mean, hell, I remember 2007, 2008
doing a really horrible version of this show
mentioning that I was pro-legalization
and losing tons of subscribers.
I wasn't like, hey kids, you should smoke weed.
No, I was just like, it should be legal and weed.
And so as far as my opinion,
I hope that means that as far as like on a federal level,
we're closer to legalization.
Because I think it's great that more and more states
have said, yes, let's legalize it.
But it's still crazy to me that you can go to jail
for having marijuana.
It's just dumb in my opinion.
It feels like it's more about preserving the pipeline
to prisons and the prison industrial complex
than actually trying to make society better.
You know, it goes a step further too.
Legalization and decriminalization are great,
but also there are tens of thousands of people
who are either still locked up
or haven't had their records expunged
for minor marijuana convictions.
That is something that also has to be addressed.
But from that, let's take a second to pay some bills
and thank the fantastic sponsor of today's show, Stamps.com.
Did you know that with Stamps.com,
you can get up to 40% off post office rates

Then let's talk about why your friend
that absolutely loves soccer may have been furious
for the past 48 hours.
Right, so last night, a group of 12 elite European
soccer clubs unveiled a plan to create a breakaway
competition called the Super League.
Some of the main teams behind the project include
Real Madrid, Manchester United, Liverpool,
also inviting eight other clubs to join like Barcelona
and AC Milan from Italy,
with the goal reportedly being to have a full allotment
of 20 clubs each season,
fleshed out by a rotating cast of five more teams
chosen through some sort of formula
that the organizers haven't gotten around
to deciding just yet.
The 20 teams will reportedly be split into two divisions,
10 teams in each,
and then play one another home and away.
At the end of the regular season,
the top four clubs in each division will progress
through a knockout tournament that will be familiar
to viewers of the Champions League.
Though noting the difference is that those playoffs
will be held over the course of four weeks
at the end of the season.
And the Super League will have permanent members
who face no risk of missing out on either the matches
or the profits.
There's no real risk of relegation.
Reportedly, each founding member stands to gain
around $400 million merely to establish
a secure financial foundation.
With reports noting that's four times more
than Bayern Munich earned
from winning the Champions League last season.
With reports also noting the clubs believe
that selling the broadcast rights for the Super League
as well as the commercial income will be worth billions.
But you know this if you have that friend
or maybe you are that friend, people are furious.
We've seen widespread condemnation from fans,
announcers, politicians.
With a number of the criticisms resembling
you're blowing up the entire sport for money.
Reports noting the national leagues
would be rendered largely irrelevant
and even the national associations,
the people who actually run soccer,
would be helpless bystanders.
Adding, most of all, it would explode the idea
that anyone can, in theory,
rise and fall on their own sporting merit.
This is also still a developing situation.
We're now seeing the union
of European Football Association saying
that any player who takes part in this breakaway league
will be banned from the World Cup
and European Championships.
We're also seeing the beginning of fan protests
against the Super League.
You've got the Global Players Union warning
that this Super League could have an impact
on the fabric and cultural identity of football.
But like I said, this is still a developing situation.
We have to wait to see what happens.
But until our next update, I do want to ask you,
especially if you are a fan of the game,
what are your thoughts about all of this?
Where do you stand on this?
And what do you think will happen and why?
Then in vaccination news, as of today,
adults in all 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico,
who want the COVID vaccine can now get one.
And this with now, according to the CDC,
half of all American adults receiving at least one shot
and about a quarter of the entire population in the US
now being fully vaccinated.
And right now the United States is on track
to have 70% of the population vaccinated by mid June.
But that said, there are still two major factors
that are going to impact herd immunity, right?
When the shots will be approved for children
and vaccine hesitancy.
Currently only people 16 and up can receive the vaccine.
And actually it's only Pfizer that's approved
to be given to 16 and 17 year receive the vaccine. And actually it's only Pfizer that's approved to be given
to 16 and 17 year olds.
Now notably Pfizer did announce this month
that it applied for an emergency youth authorization
for children ages 12 to 15.
Moderna is also set to release results
from its trial on adolescents as well.
But you also had Dr. Fauci saying just yesterday,
he doesn't expect children of all ages to be eligible
until the first quarter of 2022.
And then as far as vaccine hesitancy,
the good news here is that polls have found
that vaccine hesitancy is declining overall,
especially among black and Latino communities
where it was previously very, very high.
But at the same time, the poll also found
that fewer than half of Republicans said
that they had received at least one dose
or intend to get it,
which is concerning for a lot of people
because despite the very high vaccination rates,
the US is still seeing a high number of COVID cases
with the country averaging over 67,000 new cases a day
over the past seven days.
The last thing that we're gonna talk about today
is kind of the preparation for what's gonna go down
in Minneapolis this week.
Right, the trial of Derek Chauvin for his role
in the death of George Floyd, it's coming to a close.
Today, we saw closing arguments of the prosecution
essentially saying, just believe your eyes.
We've all seen that video, the nine minutes and 29 seconds
that Chauvin put his knee on Floyd's neck.
Meanwhile, the defense argued the prosecution
didn't meet the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
And for now we have to wait and see what's going to happen
with the charge of second degree murder,
third degree murder, as well as second degree manslaughter.
With Chauvin with those charges facing up to 40 years,
25 years and 10 years in prison.
Right now you have officials, business owners
and residents worried about what will happen
if a not guilty verdict is handed down.
There are many concerned that the city may see
the same unrest and violence that I saw
the summer after Floyd was killed.
And so with this, we saw last week,
thousands of Minnesota National Guard troops
deployed throughout the city.
City and state officials saying the move
was a necessary deterrent to prevent looting and violence,
but it's also been condemned by many residents.
Arguing that militarizing the city
ignores the community's trauma from the summer
when police responded to mostly peaceful protests
with tear gas and violence.
In fact, a number of leaders believe
that it was actually the aggressive response
that spurred on the violence and destruction.
Those concerns have also ramped up in recent days
as members of the National Guard have used similar tactics
on protesters in Brooklyn Center
where Daunte Wright was killed,
with the mayor and council calling on law enforcement
to scale back the response,
including their use of tear gas.
But public safety officials have refused,
arguing that they are needed to maintain peace
and safety in the area.
And so as a result,
we've seen many Minneapolis city council members
publicly condemning the tactics used in Brooklyn Center,
and also expressing concerns that this is just a preview
of what's to come after the verdict.
Which is why we've seen buildings,
including police stations and public offices,
secured with concrete, fencing, plywood,
many businesses beginning to board up
their storefronts as well.
And so for now, we're kind of just having to wait
and see what's gonna happen,
but it feels like we're waiting to see
if the bomb's gonna go off or not.
You know, just like what happened
after the death of George Floyd,
this isn't just a local matter.
This is something that could easily turn into national
and international incidents.
And ultimately with this story,
or actually anything that stood out to you today,
I'd love to know your thoughts
in those comments down below,
because this is the end of today's show.
As always, thank you for watching, liking, subscribing,
all the good stuff.
If you're looking for more to watch,
I get covered right here with more news,
or maybe my brand new podcast would call me Chris.
