Oh, sup you beautiful bastards.
Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco Show.
I'm definitely not faking this energy, baby.
Running at a hundred percent.
Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco Show.
Hit that like button if you want me
to punch you in the throat and let's just jump into it.
Y'all first up today, you know,
over the last 24 to 36 hours,
there's been a lot of talk about Biden
very much leaning towards forgiving up to $50,000
of student loan debt.
And it's resulted in headlines like student loan forgiveness to $50,000 of student loan debt. And it's resulted in headlines like,
student loan forgiveness of $50,000
is getting more and more likely, says top Democrat.
But today, this is what we saw.
All my faults!
No, I'm sorry, wrong clip, this one.
Secondly, I am considering dealing with some debt reduction.
I am not considering $50,000 debt reduction,
but I'm in the process of taking a hard look at whether or not there will be additional debt
forgiveness. And I'll have an answer on that in the next couple of weeks.
The timing of this decision or whatever the hell is going to happen, it is important because the
Biden administration has continually extended the moratorium on loan payments and interest, with the most recent extension being right around the corner, August 31st. It was
the sixth time the freeze was extended, and according to a report last month from the Federal Reserve
Bank of New York, nearly 37 million borrowers have saved about $195 billion from the moratorium
through April of 2022. And that same report also reportedly found that student loan borrowers who
didn't benefit from the extended moratorium had 33% higher rates
of delinquency on other debt excluding mortgages
than those who did.
And personally, I'm very interested to know your thoughts
on debt forgiveness because according to polls,
people are actually very split.
According to a recent Harvard Youth poll,
more than 80% of Americans between the ages of 18 to 29
want the government to take action
when it comes to student debt relief.
But less than 40% of that group think that it should be cancelled for everyone. Which of course, while less than 50%,
is a bump from 2020, which was five points lower. It was also interesting to look at the demographics
of those who took part in the poll. As far as cancelling debt for everyone along party lines,
48% of Democrats backed it, 39% of Independents, 20% of Republicans. Though of Republicans,
Forbes noting even 73% of Republicans want the government to take some form of action. There also appear to be a difference based on race.
For supporting debt cancellation for everyone, you had 50% of black, 43% of Hispanic, 38% of Asian,
and 33% of white supporting. And for me personally, like, I don't know what the actual solution to
this problem is, but I think the first thing is understanding this is a genuine problem. I do
think there needs to be relief of some sort, and I'm not personally of the mindset that just because I
struggled with student loans and it stressed me out and it was a hurdle that I had to overcome,
that the loans just need to ruin other people's lives. The way higher education is set up in this country is fucking stupid.
Like, hey, do you want to do the thing that we all say that you have to do to like have a good job?
Well, you're gonna take on a possibly insurmountable amount of debt.
I want you to shoot for the stars,
but just really quick,
if you could put on these cement slippers.
The cost of higher education in this country
and the loans that people have to take,
it's all predatory, it's exploitation,
so they can milk you for years and years
until you're in the ground.
But at the same time, I'm not an economist
and I don't know what the actual answer
and what the actual solution is,
but I don't think that overburdening people is going to be good for, one, people in general, but also, two, for our entire country.
Like, every day, more and more young people are getting priced out of the American dream.
The cost of college has increased at an absurd rate.
Houses sell for ridiculous sums of money, where we're slowly, we're more and more becoming a nation of renters.
It's because those with money and power monetarily benefit based off of making you an economic slave.
But yeah, that's the story. A little of my opinion, and then kind of just some blind rambling.
It's been a long week.
The main thing, I'd love to know your thoughts.
Actually, let me do something stupid. This, why?
Well, I don't have the answers for and can't really impact all student loan debt
I can impact and potentially just drastically change someone's life right now
So going to the text line shoot out a text to the top most active people and whoever gets the link to work first
That paid also my camera's about to die cool.
The biggest thing is,
is right now I'm currently about $40,000 in debt.
But you know,
you gotta get in debt apparently
in order to survive in this country.
Like, it's ridiculous.
Because every year it's just expensive.
It's the fees,
it's the coursework, it's all of those extra things. And I live at home. If I were living on campus, I would have to pay for
the college housing and all of that extra stuff too. So it would be even worse for me in the end.
I'm trying to think of how to say this next part, because it's a little bit sensitive.
I, every now and then, like to try and do something nice to trick myself into thinking I'm a nice person.
And so what I'd like to do is to pay off all your loans right now.
Wait. Wait, really?
Yeah. So the 40 that you're facing now, we'll just, I'll get that to you.
Um, sure.
Yeah, no, that would super,
like that would help out a ton.
I'll have my lawyers and accountants yell at me tomorrow
and we'll figure out how to do it.
And then we'll do it.
But from that, I want to take a second
to thank the fantastic sponsor of today's show,

And then in massive news, going into the 2022 midterms,
Democrats can gerrymander too, they just kinda suck at it.
Whereas where I'll start is that yesterday,
New York's highest court struck down a congressional map
drawn by the state's Democrats.
In the decision, the New York State Court of Appeals
agreed with Republicans who had argued
that the map was unconstitutionally gerrymandered
to benefit Democrats,
with the court calling the map unconstitutional
as drawn with impermissible partisan purpose,
which also sounds like the name of an alt-DC punk band.
Notably, the court also condemned the Democrats
for ignoring a constitutional amendment
approved by voters in 2014
that aimed to limit political influence and redistricting,
including by creating an independent entity
to draw a map that the legislature would then vote on,
but the commission literally created to prevent partisan gerrymandering was unable to decide on a map that the legislature would then vote on. But the commission, literally created
to prevent partisan gerrymandering,
was unable to decide on a map
because of its own partisan stalemate.
So with no final map produced,
the Democrats basically said,
"'Well, we just can't not have a map,
"'so if you won't make one, we will.'"
But the version the legislature passed
and New York's governor signed into law
redrew lines that the Democrats could have gained
as many as three new seats
in the US House of Representatives,
which would be massively significant in an election
where Republicans are expected to make major gains,
both because of public sentiment
and because of gerrymandering in other states.
So of course, Republicans sued,
with the lower court also striking the map down.
And as far as what happens next, in their order,
the appeals court justices took away
the legislature's ability to make the map
and instead delegated it to a court-appointed neutral expert.
While the judges did say there was enough time
to finish the map before the election in June,
they also added the congressional primary elections
will likely need to be moved to August.
And ultimately where I'll end this story
is kind of on the note of Democrats
sucking at gerrymandering.
Because unfortunately, gerrymandering
is part of our political landscape, it just happens.
But the two primary parties that we have in this country
handle it completely differently.
As Dave Wasserman explained in a thread yesterday,
"'Shorter 2022' redistricted.
It's permissible to brazenly gerrymander in some states,
mostly red, but not others, mostly blue.
As long as that's true, you're not going to end up
with a fair or equitable national house map.
Then going on to list the 13 states on track
for GOP gerrymanders versus the seven states on track
for Democratic gerrymanders.
And as far as court or commission maps,
listing the state and noting it's 181 districts in states
that Biden won, and as far as states that Trump won,
it was only 26 districts.
And it feels like the really unfortunate lesson we get
from this story and this situation is that the more willing,
and actually willing might not be the right word,
the more able you are to disenfranchise voters
and manipulate maps in your favor,
misrepresent populations, communities, breakdowns,
the more likely it is that you will get power,
which is a pretty fucked up prerequisite to get power.
It feels like a common thing in life,
and it's not a uniquely American thing
that we penalize those who will not shed integrity.
So I guess, yeah, just naturally,
why wouldn't we expect more people and groups
attempting to exploit the rules?
And the last thing that I wanna talk about today
is actually, it's an apology.
It's not even like a fake apology,
like how I do 99% of the times.
This is gonna be the end of the video
because I'm not great right now. I think, uh, today I just,
the last two and a half months of health problems and with COVID be this week
being the cherry on top. And, uh, this week just happened.
Stance happened to be a short staff, just issues. Uh,
I I've just beat down and I should have listened to a lot of you who said I should
at least have taken one day off this week. And I didn't. And so some of you were right and I was
wrong. It pains me when I can't be the best version of myself. I always try and keep it
going because I feel like if I don't, you know, I'll drown. You just got to keep swimming. So I'm
going to treat today not like a failure because I still got to change at least one person's life, to put out a slightly watchable show. I think that by next Monday, I'll be good.
The tires are just very thin right now. I gotta go in for a tire change. By next Monday, I will
evolve from depressed, tired DeFranco to fantastic asshole DeFranco. But until then, where I'll leave
you is with my name's Philip DeFranco,
you've just been filled in, I love yo faces, and I'll see you next time.
