Sup you beautiful bastards.
Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco show.
Hit that like button to support the video.
Hit that subscribe button for your chance to win $5,000
at the end of the month.
And let's just jump into it.
And the first thing we have to talk about today
is exposing YouTube's own Rhett and Link
for who they really are the Philip DeFranco way,
which is by having a thoughtful conversation
for about 90 minutes where I ask at times uncomfortable
and intrusive questions about their friendship,
their lives and their workplace.
And if you'd like to watch any and all of that
ooey gooey goodness, go to youtube.com slash ACW
or click that link in the description down below
after this video.
Candidly, I will say, I'm honestly surprised
they said some of the stuff they did in that podcast,
especially about working with YouTube.
But I really, really appreciated the honesty.
Then we got the news that the mayor of Flavortown,
Guy Fieri, has signed an $80 million food network deal
for the next three years.
With this, according to Forbes,
it makes him the highest paid chef on cable TV,
but the numbers actually do make sense.
Reportedly, just last year, his show,
"'Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives'
generated more than $230 million in ad revenue."
And then we've got Moderna saying
that their COVID-19 vaccine strongly protects people
as young as 12 years old,
with them also saying that they'll submit their data
to the US Food and Drug Administration
and other global regulators early next month.
Notably, if this all moves forward as expected,
it puts them right alongside Pfizer,
who the United States and Canada have already authorized
to be used starting at the age of 12.
Also, this week we're seeing a lot of questions
about the upcoming Summer Olympics.
This, because as Axios notes,
while preparing for 20,000 athletes and support staff
from 200 countries, Japan remains in a state of emergency
with 70,000 active COVID cases
and only 5% of the population vaccinated.
A situation so dire that in fact this Monday,
the surge prompted the CDC and the US State Department
to warn Americans against travel to Japan.
Which is why even though it appears
that everything is moving forward with the Summer Olympics,
you have people like Marissa Fernandez writing a paper
in the New England Journal of Medicine saying,
58 days until the Summer Olympics opening ceremony,
scientists warn that canceling the games
may be the safest option.
But despite what appears to be growing opposition,
both locally and internationally,
to have the games, there's no indication
that the International Olympic Committee
is going to change anything.
Then we had Seth Rogen in the news further stirring
the debate around cancel culture.
This because while on Good Morning Britain yesterday,
he said he didn't understand why comedians complain
so much about cancel culture.
Saying terrible things is bad.
So if you said something terrible,
then that's something you should confront
in some way, shape or form.
I don't think that's cancel culture.
That's you saying something terrible,
if that's what you've done.
But notably, this is also being said
in the same kind of time period, time window,
where you have Chris Rock saying that comedy
is becoming boring and unfunny
because comedians are scared of cancel culture.
Likes of Billy Crystal saying that comedy
has become a minefield. Here, you have Seth Rogen in his interview saying that comedians are scared of cancel culture. Like Billy Crystal saying that comedy has become a minefield.
Here you have Seth Rogen in his interview saying
that comedians just kind of need to accept that some
of the stuff they say, it's not going to age well.
They need to accept if something is said in the past
is not okay and just own up to it.
And reportedly when asked about his own controversial jokes
that he made in past films, he said,
there are certain jokes that for sure have not aged well,
but I think that's the nature of comedy.
I think conceptually those movies are sounds.
And I think there's a reason they've lasted as far
as people still watching and enjoying them today.
Jokes are not things that necessarily are built to last.
When it comes to this belief of just owning up
to old bad jokes, it seems that that is something
that Seth Rogen is trying to do himself.
Right, just earlier this month,
saying that a joke that he made about James Franco
messaging a 17 year old was a mistake,
telling the Sunday Times.
I do look back at a joke I made on Saturday Night Live
in 2014 and I very much regret making that joke.
It was a terrible joke, honestly.
And while yes, you did have some people supporting this
saying, yes, this is really level-headed,
but on the other side, you also have people saying
that he was cheerleading the cancel culture mob
and even comedians like Andrew Scholl's tweeting,
"'No one cares what Seth says about anything.
"'Stop pretending this is real.'"
Then in one day, Amazon just gonna own everything new
as Amazon announced that it will be acquiring MGM Studios
for $8.45 billion.
And as far as what that means for you,
if you have Amazon Prime, this is gonna be great news.
Which actually, according to reports,
MGM has a library of more than 4,000 movies
and 17,000 TV shows.
So very likely there's a ton of new stuff
coming to Amazon Prime Video.
But that also means like we saw with Disney Plus
and franchises such as Marvel,
that this deal will certainly mean that MGM movies
and shows are gonna be pulled from other streaming platforms.
So there are going to be definitive winners and losers here.
Then we've seen critical race theory a lot in the news
as of recently, which does make sense.
Right now, Republicans in at least nine states
are trying to crack down on critical race theory.
Some calling to ban it,
others specifically trying to avoid that word
while also eliminating it.
For example, a new bill that was passed in Texas
prohibits any conversation around current affairs
or controversial issues of public policy slash social affairs
keeps teachers from discussing the concept of superiority
in any race, sex, or the idea that any race or sex
bears responsibility for actions they committed in the past
and exempts teachers from bias training
if it causes them psychological stress.
If a fellow is unfamiliar with critical race theory
as Axios explains, it's a framework that was developed
in the 1970s by legal scholars, including Derrick Bell
and Richard Delgado that argues white supremacy
maintains power through the law and other legal systems.
Dismissing the notion that racism stems from acts
of individuals saying that it comes from how the nation
formed and that only through attacking routine practices
and institutions through color conscious efforts
will racism be dismantled.
And with this pointing to things like in the declaration
of independence, native Americans were referred to
as savages, as well as things like the US constitution
counting enslaved black people as three fifths of a person,
as well as highlighting things like one of the worst acts
of racial violence in our nation's history,
the Tulsa race massacre, where city officials
and white mobs that were never brought to justice
destroyed Tulsa's black wall street,
killing 300 innocent people.
Whereas those who are arguing to get this stuff
out of the classroom say things like,
it's intended to divide them into affinity groups.
They are oppressor or they are the oppressed.
It focuses on collective guilt.
If you're white, we're going to white shame you.
We're going to make you atone for your white privilege
and your internalized racial white privilege.
And also it's very much neo-segregation.
Those words specifically coming from former Georgia teacher
Courtney Stokes, who Fox News also noted,
mentioned the hard work the United States has done to quote,
move beyond racial differences.
But from that, let's take a second to pay some bills
and thank the fantastic sponsor of today's show,

Then we have President Biden today asking
the US intelligence community to quote,
"'Redouble their efforts in investigating the origins
"'of the coronavirus,' calling for a report
"'in the next 90 days that could bring us closer
"'to a definitive conclusion.'"
But they're reportedly being generally understood
by this community that there are two likely scenarios.
One, there was some sort of human contact
with an infected animal, right?
We've heard a lot of people talk about bats.
Or two, it was the result of an accidental laboratory leak.
And regarding that second one, while yes, reportedly,
a joint team from the World Health Organization and China
issued an inconclusive report back in March
that described the so-called lab leak theory
as extremely unlikely,
but that report has actually been criticized
by both the US and World Health Organization leadership
for its methodology and lack of transparency
from the Chinese government.
And you know, the timing of this does make sense
because the debate around this has been reignited.
And this in large part because of the Wall Street Journal
very recently reporting that three researchers
at the Wuhan Institute of Virology fell ill enough
to be hospitalized in November of 2019.
But also I will say, I don't expect us to get any definitive answers on this
because it's China.
The words transparency and forthcoming
really aren't attributed to China.
And unfortunately that is where the evidence
and truth lies.
Then in big international news,
we may be on the verge of seeing India crack down
and maybe even ban certain social networks.
And this because in India today marks the start
of major new social media regulations.
With companies like Facebook and its subsidiaries,
Instagram and WhatsApp alongside Twitter,
kind of just scrambling for the past three months
to try to comply with these new rules.
And I mean, the Indian government's being very heavy handed.
I mean, most recently they fought with Twitter
because Twitter marked a tweet from a member
of the ruling party as manipulated media.
Right, and that because the person retweeted
a doctored image of a COVID-19 information toolkit
from the opposition
in an attempt to discredit it.
With that fight getting so ridiculous and serious
that the government even raided Twitter's Indian offices.
And here's the thing, if a company does not comply,
despite the headlines, they would not be instantly banned,
but pretty much, I mean, it would be the case.
If they don't follow the rules,
they lose their intermediary status,
which grants them protection
from content posted on their platform.
So what that means is if it was revoked,
they'd essentially be hit with lawsuit after lawsuit.
And at that point, the lawsuits would probably be so ridiculous and rampant
that it'd be easier to just pull out of that market.
And actually, in a quick update that came out just as I was recording this,
at least one company, WhatsApp, has just sued the government
in the Delhi High Court in an attempt to stop the rules from going into effect.
Although whether or not that is going to work, we're going to have to wait and see.
Then in a story that will not result in me apologizing
to the Communist Party of China or John Cena,
the country of Taiwan has accused China
of actively hindering its efforts to obtain more vaccines
as it struggles with the slow vaccination campaign.
And even more concerning with that,
they are seeing a surge of cases right now.
While we saw the Taiwanese officials hinting,
even back in February, that China was hindering efforts
for them to get the vaccine from Pfizer,
this morning you had the president of Taiwan
explicitly accusing China,
saying we had almost completed the contract signing
with the German manufacturer at one point,
but it has been delayed till now
because China has interfered.
Though Beijing here has long denied
putting up a roadblock to the vaccine
with a spokesperson for the foreign ministry saying,
Taiwan's access to vaccines from the mainland is smooth.
However, it should be noted,
China has only offered domestic vaccines to Taiwan.
But Taiwan doesn't want that, with their president saying,
"'Only by purchasing the vaccines
"'from the original manufacturer
"'can we obtain direct guarantee in quality and safety
"'to avoid legal and political double risks.'"
But ultimately, that is where we are.
In the meantime, they've also been trying
to develop their own vaccine,
though it's believed that the earliest that could be ready
is in July, and right now, I mean,
the country's in a near state of complete lockdown until June 14th. And the last
thing that we're going to talk about today that we really can't go in depth, it's still a developing
situation. There's an investigation ongoing. Officials have not released a possible motive,
but we have learned from officials that there was a mass shooting in San Jose, California.
I can confirm with you at this point that there are eight victims that are
pronounced deceased at this point and there's one suspect that's pronounced deceased. This is still
ongoing like I said the numbers can change okay so this is still a fluid and active ongoing
investigation. We have all the resources out here from city, county, and federal agencies out here
including the FBI and the DA and Homeland Security out here to city, county, and federal agencies out here, including the FBI and the DA
and Homeland Security out here to assist with this investigation. According to reports, the shooting
happened at the BTA light rail yard in San Jose, California, with authorities saying while they
have not identified the suspect yet, he was a BTA employee. But like I said, as of recording this
video, it is still a developing situation. It is something that we are going to update. According
to a San Jose fire spokesperson, there are multiple active scenes connected
to the investigation into the shooting.
According to a deputy with the Santa Clara County
Sheriff's Office, a bomb squad is on scene
searching for explosive devices.
This is because reportedly they received information
that there were explosive devices
located inside the building.
But the White House also saying
that they are monitoring the situation now.
And adding, we still don't know all of the details,
but what's clear, as the president has said,
is that we are suffering from an epidemic
of gun violence in this country,
both in mass shootings and in the lives
that are being taken in daily gun violence
that doesn't make national headlines.
And adding, that's why he has already taken
an initial set of actions on gun violence
that will save lives, and that's why he's calling
on Congress to take action, including calling
on the Senate to pass the three bills
to strengthen background checks that have already cleared
the House with bipartisan support,
and which have the overwhelming backing
of the American people.
And ultimately with this story or actually anything else
that stood out to you today,
I'd love to know your thoughts in those comments down below
because this is the end of today's show.
