Republicans just passed what's being called the worst piece of legislation in modern history
And you might need to buckle up for what's coming in the next one to three years
This love island situation is crazy
It has gotten so much bigger than some reality tv drama argentina's president became part of an ai porn smear campaign
And the teacher just lost his job because an obituary outed him
We're talking about that and much more on today's brand new philip defranco show you daily dive into the news starting with this
on today's brand new Philip DeFranco show, your daily dive into the news, starting with this.
The House just passed Trump's big, beautiful bill today.
A bill that's been described as the worst piece
of legislation in modern history.
A bill that's predicted to have sweeping,
devastating impacts for just countless Americans.
Taking Medicaid away from 17 million people,
gutting access to food stamps,
and just generally hurting the poorest people in America
while delivering trillions of dollars in tax cuts
that'll benefit the rich.
Because when we last talked about this yesterday,
you know, I said, I think this is going through,
but it was unclear at the time
if the house was gonna successfully pass it,
at least by the July 4th deadline
that was set by leadership.
Because you had the more moderate members upset
about the fact that the Senate package
made even deeper cuts to Medicaid than the version
initially passed by the house in May.
But then at the same time,
you had conservative hardliners angry
that the Senate had made additions
that would increase the cost of the legislation
and remove some of the cuts that the House bill had made
to food stamps and other programs,
with it actually turning out that the fiscal hawks
were the biggest hurdle.
And many in that faction were upset
that House Speaker Mike Johnson was just plowing ahead
with the Senate version of the bill
without allowing the lower chamber to make changes,
demanding that they be allowed to negotiate
and effectively stalling procedural votes necessary
to move the bill to the floor for debate.
Despite their so-called strong objections,
a big question was, you know,
was this group gonna ultimately cave to pressure
from Trump as they've been known to do?
And wouldn't you know it, history repeated itself.
Though, you know, keep in mind,
they were essentially holding up the bill
because they were like,
I don't know if this hurts enough Americans.
The main thing, you know, Johnson and his leadership
were ultimately able to secure enough support
from the holdouts after fighting tooth and nail
in a series of lengthy conversations yesterday
that went late into the night. And ultimately, they were able to secure enough support from the holdouts after fighting tooth and nail in a series of lengthy conversations yesterday that went late into the night.
And ultimately they were able to pass the bill 218 to 214
with two Republicans joining all Democrats to vote no.
Right, and as for those two Republicans,
you of course had Thomas Massie,
who voted against the original House version
and has been very clear about his opposition,
making him a major Trump target,
as well as Brian Fitzpatrick,
who's a moderate from a battleground district
in Pennsylvania who had raised concerns
about the cuts to Medicaid,
food stamps, and other social safety net programs.
Which, on the note of food stamps,
according to reports, this could be particularly
devastating for people who also voted for Trump.
Snap participation, it's pretty even
between Republicans and Democrats,
but snap participation is especially high
in a lot of districts in the South and the Midwest
where Trump won.
And that is, you also have one progressive think tank
calling this the deepest snap cut in history
and warning that over 2 million kids are gonna lose
at least some of their snap benefits.
Though also you have to imagine it was Trump
that just jammed this thing over the line.
Right, because while you had Trump claiming
on True Social at around 9 p.m. last night
that everyone was unified after talks that he had
with members earlier in the day,
with him writing,
it looks like the House is ready to vote tonight.
We had great conversations all day
and the Republican House majority is united.
But then night turned into Thursday morning
and Trump was seemingly mad at this party
that had proved him wrong.
The lashing out shortly after midnight writing,
what are the Republicans waiting for?
What are you trying to prove?
MAGA is not happy and it's costing you votes.
With him then adding just before 1 a.m.
For Republicans, this should be an easy yes vote.
Ridiculous.
And then at around 3.30 in the morning,
the house cleared that final procedural hurdle.
Between 219 to 213 to bring the bill to the floor for debate
or to sign that there was enough Republican support
to pass it.
With Johnson telling reporters that he secured enough votes
to pass the BBB before the July 4th deadline
and insisting that the leadership had not made any promises
to the holdouts to secure their vote
and claiming that they just needed a little more time
to understand the changes in the Senate bill
before they could back it.
But notably here, many of the Republican holdouts
who eventually backed the bill have indicated
that they caved after getting some kind of concession
from Trump.
And while the exact details are unclear,
several said that the president had offered up
executive orders and other actions
to address their concerns about the bill.
And then all of that is you had Democrats
kind of trying to do anything they could to block the bill,
but also understand they can't do much.
You had many continuing to put public pressure
on their GOP colleagues to vote no.
Or with representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,
for example, urging Republicans to think
of their constituents over the demands of leadership.
Writing, leadership does not know your community, you do.
Their job is to psychologically isolate you
and apply ungodly amounts of pressure.
Your job is to stand up for your people.
You can also add her accusing some
of her Christian colleagues of hypocrisy.
Saying, House Republicans voting for cuts
to every single American on Snap
in exchange
for some signed merch, voting to starve babies,
the disabled, the poor, and they have the audacity
to try to brand this as Christian.
What does that word even mean to them?
Wearing a necklace?
You then also have leader Jeffries echoing those criticisms
in a marathon floor speech that he used to stall
the passage of the BBB.
Because under House rules, party leaders are allowed
to speak for an unlimited amount of time during floor debate,
which is a legislative tool widely known as the magic minute.
Jeffrey is actually breaking the record
for the longest speech given on the house floor,
clocking in at eight hours and 45 minutes.
And during this record breaking speech,
you had Jeffries repeatedly railing against the bill
and slamming his Republican colleagues,
recalling out some of the vulnerable Republicans
whose seats the Democrats are hoping to flip
in the midterms.
He also at times turned to scripture to make his case
and read letters from Americans urging Congress
not to pass the bill and expressing their concerns
about losing essential benefits.
Or with Jeffries delivering some very powerful moments,
drawing cheers and applause from members of his party.
This reckless Republican budget is in a moral document.
And some of the loudest applause for Jeffries
coming after accused Republicans of being corrupt.
Talking about draining the swamp, guess what?
You are the swamp.
We've never seen anything like this.
The type of corruption
that has been unleashed on the American people. Jeffries then concluding the speech by vowing to the American people that Democrats will continue to press on and fight for them as members
around him yelled press on.
Press on for the rule of law. Press on for the American way of life.
Press on for democracy. of law. Press on for the American way of life. Press on for democracy.
We're gonna press on until victory is won.
I yield back.
But whether you thought it was a powerful speech or not,
it essentially just delayed the inevitable.
For the Republicans, they'd just been waiting in the wings
until he finished so they could wrap up debate
and call for a final vote.
With several Republicans criticizing Jeffries, calling on him to wrap it up and Johnson slamming the
speech as an utter waste of everyone's time. And ultimately with Johnson getting the final word,
delivering a 20 minute speech on the floor where he talked about how actually amazing
this bill is for Americans and he praised President Trump for being such a good leader.
With one big beautiful bill, we are going to make this country stronger, safer,
and more prosperous than ever before.
And every American is going to benefit from that.
President Trump is the creator and the champion of the America First Agenda.
We will deliver upon that today.
We had a sense and we believed that we would have unified government.
We would have this moment where the Republican Party would be given control of the White
House and the Senate and the House.
And we determined to ourselves that we would not waste
that historic opportunity.
We've had spirited debates, we've had months of deliberation
and now we are finally ready to fulfill our promise
to the American people.
Now, as far as what happens next,
the bill will be sent to Trump's desk
and he's set to sign it during a ceremony
at 5 p.m. Eastern tomorrow.
You know, time will be the ultimate judge
of if this bill
will ultimately benefit every American, as Johnson said.
But especially as you have countless nonpartisan reports
and expert analyses indicating the exact opposite.
We're saying that this is actually gonna be
incredibly harmful to millions and millions
of the most vulnerable Americans.
Well, this touches on every single American.
Unfortunately, it's those people who are gonna be
the guinea pigs for the most extreme of what's to come.
And yeah, time will tell if these people
end up being collateral damage for Trump's tax breaks.
You know, one thing that Johnson said here is true.
The American people gave Republicans the trifecta,
the people who voted, the people also who did not vote,
especially because so much of what we're seeing here
is what they said that they would do.
You know, while some of the people who voted for this
are gonna end up in a fuck around and find out situation
because it's gonna negatively impact them.
It's going to affect way more than that.
So with some of the impacts here
going to be felt immediately in others
over the next one, two, three plus years,
these Americans can often have a tendency
to have a short-term memory.
Remember this moment, who enabled it
and who pushed it through.
But for now, as we wait to see how this plays out,
let me know your thoughts in those comments down below.
But then, next up in the news day,
we gotta talk about the situation that is insane,
but is also unfortunately becoming kind of the standard.
Because there's this AI generated pornographic videos
is being used right now to drag a journalist
through the mud in Argentina.
And the country's president, Javier Millet,
he's just been taking the chance to pile on
with his own attack.
And this is just the newest episode in a long running series
to undermine press freedom in the country.
But also to fully appreciate this situation,
you know, we got to talk about the journalist in question.
Her name is Julia Mangolini,
and she's got a radio show and she's a critic of Millet.
And once she joked on TV that Millet was in love
with his sister who also happens
to be his top political advisor.
But she never said anything about a sexual relationship,
and she later clarified that she wasn't implying
anything sexual.
What you're seeing is that Millet's supporters
have seized onto that comment to try to justify
a fake pornographic video depicting Mangolini
with her own brother.
And while Millet, he didn't share the video himself,
he made it very clear that he considered
the smear campaign fair game.
With Millet writing, it seems that when she lashes out
with her lies, it's fine, but when the tables turn,
she cries and wants to take it to court.
Millet kind of got obsessive about it.
In just a couple of days, he ended up posting
or reposting at least 65 messages on X
targeting the journalists.
With the barrage being called by the New York Times,
one of the most extreme episodes in a pattern
of escalating attacks against journalists by Millet.
Within many adding that Millet's misogynistic,
sexually charged and often false attacks
are eroding press freedom
and raising the risk of real-world violence.
With one law professor and former judge calling this
an attack on freedom of expression
because it's a form of indirect censorship
as this sort of thing obviously tends to inhibit speech.
Right, and Millay's fire hose here,
it's not just for Mangalini.
She is just one of several high profile journalists
who have recently been targets of Millay and his allies.
With Amnesty International even saying that since he took off
as in December of 2023, he has publicly insulted
at least 41 journalists.
Though observers have said that it's actually gotten worse
in recent months.
Right, I mean, for example, you had Maria O'Donnell,
who's another journalist who's been on the receiving end
of Millais insults saying,
there used to be an idea of an eye for an eye.
You come for me, I come for you.
Now he openly promotes hatred, insults,
and outright disparagement.
There's been a shift and it's gotten far more aggressive.
And that shift appears to have started
after Millais secured a long awaited $20 billion deal
with the IMF, a deal that led him to making changes
that led some economists to raise questions
about his government's management of the economy.
With then, Millet not long after,
coining the catchphrase,
we don't hate journalists enough.
Or which you may have noticed,
ties to things that we see here in America.
Or which is very similar to the,
you don't hate the media enough mantra
that's popular among Trump supporters,
as well as you know,
the you don't hate the legacy media enough
that we hear from Elon Musk.
Which also, not surprising,
we've seen these kind of communities and movements
pulling from one another.
And actually, just like with Trump,
we've seen Malay go on the offensive, the legal way.
Because Malay has now filed a complaint
against Mangalini for slander.
And that came hours after she announced
a lawsuit against him.
Though again, this is not limited to Mangalini.
Malay has actually filed defamation lawsuits
against at least three journalists
who he accuses of labeling him as a Nazi.
And that, as we're seeing things like in May,
there was a leaked intelligence report
that suggested that his government had approved a plan to enable
the surveillance of journalists, politicians, and economists.
So as far as Malay, he confirmed the existence
of a new intelligence plan,
but they denied that it would be used for that.
But definitely it's a situation and a country to keep eyes
on, especially because there are a number of situations
that feel kind of parallel
to what's happening in the United States.
And then I'm gonna get you right back into the news,
but I gotta take a minute to thank a sponsor today.
And with that, ask you the question,
how many brilliant ideas are just rotting away
in your notes app right now?
Because somewhere in that dusty graveyard
of some day ideas, you've got your side hustle,
your escape, maybe your next step.
And so I want you to make today the day that you commit
to taking that idea to the next level.
You know, for me, it was my book club.
I put that off forever.
But then, DeFranco Book Club, it went from some day
to launched in under an hour,
thanks to today's sponsor, Squarespace.

But then shifting gears to a different kind of news,
we need to talk about Love Island.
Because what started as a show about love,
it's now seemingly a pressure cooker of racism,
cruelty and real world consequences.
And this week, it just exploded with it,
sparking debates around who reality TV chooses
to throw to the wolves and what it says about our society.
And the biggest villain, you have many arguing
it's not even anyone on the cast.
And if you don't watch Love Island USA, don't worry.
I'm gonna start with the latest scandal
and we're gonna work our way back.
And it's really bigger than the show.
Because currently there's a lot of heat
on a contestant named Sierra.
And that because there's an old social media post
where she used a racial slur for Asian people
that resurfaced.
And in the post, she's discussing getting Botox
and other work done.
And she says she can look a little insert slur here
when she smiles.
With that being met with swift backlash
and people arguing she should be removed from the show.
Especially since at the start of the season,
people resurfaced racist comments
that a different contestant previously made,
including the use of the N-word
and she was booted right away.
So with some arguing, you can't allow one and not the other.
Racism is racism.
As well as racism against any race should be held
to the same severity of racism against black people.
Ulyssa was kicked off and so should Sierra.
And amid this backlash,
Sierra has been losing followers like it's her job.
But that drop of just hundreds of thousands of followers
might be due to the fact that many people are upset
with her behavior on the show,
which ties into another aspect of this whole thing.
And that is the bullying debate.
With many of you saying, yeah,
there's bullying coming from the contestants in the villa,
but also with people watching.
Where the viewers that are watching
this social experiment play out.
Which to explain it all, just quick TLDR of how Love Island works. The show is happening in real time, but also with people watching. With the viewers that are watching this social experiment play out, which to explain it all,
just quick TLDR of how Love Island works.
The show is happening in real time, like as we speak.
Right now, you've got a bunch of contestants
currently isolated in a Fiji villa without their phones
or access to social media.
So they have no clue what anyone thinks of them.
Right, and the goal of the show is to couple up
with someone in the villa, find a connection,
but then there are also challenges and evictions.
And so the goal is also not to get kicked out.
And the audience at home, they get to vote
and call some of the shots as to what goes down
in the villa.
At the start of the season, there was a lot
of conversation focused on a contestant named Huda.
Cause I guess to just put it plainly, people hated her.
She coupled up immediately with a guy named Jeremiah
and people thought she was incredibly controlling,
possessive and toxic in their relationship.
So a lot of the people that watched the show,
they one made their opinions of her well-known online
and two, they also made their thoughts known to Huda
by voting to break them up
and couple Jeremiah up with a new woman.
And in fact, the backlash got to such a point,
the host of the show had to issue a statement
asking viewers not to dox the contestants
or contact their families.
You even had Huda's real life ex,
who's also the father of her child,
writing a statement on social media telling people,
at the end of the day,
I hope everyone remembers we're human.
Her going on the show to find love
or whatever you think it was she's doing.
Remember, she's still human.
She has a daughter and a life.
And adding, it's crazy I have to involve myself in this,
but I don't want my daughter's mom to get out
and see this and her mental health goes down a hill.
That last part, it's a huge part of this.
And not just with social media in general,
but it is there, but specifically with this show,
two people who were contestants on the UK version
of the show, they later committed suicide.
You know, while contestants,
they complete psychological evaluations before filming
and have access to psychologists on site in the villa,
there's probably nothing out there that can prepare you
for reentering the world after millions of people
have been watching you the last six weeks of your life
and just picking apart every single thing you did.
And so then with that, at the end of an episode in June,
you had the show releasing a statement saying,
"'We love our fans, we love our islanders,
we don't love cyber bullying, harassment, or hate.'"
The hoodah is far from the only one
who has gotten tons of hate online.
There's another contestant named Vanna
who received tons of brutal comments about her appearance
from those speculating about classic surgery she had done.
And then she saw all of it as she got voted out
and said it made her break down crying.
All the things that these people were pointing out to me,
like I never saw in myself,
like they're kind of pointing out like new insecurities,
I guess.
They were just things that I never looked in the mirror
and like didn't like that about myself.
I mean, the situation has gotten so big.
You had the New York Times even running a piece saying
the show has a new villain this season, the viewers.
But then with that, you have many viewers slamming the show
and the producers, right?
Arguing that you're doing this,
asking how are you going to be anti-bullying, but you let it happen in the producers, right? Arguing that you're doing this. Asking how are you gonna be anti-bullying
but you let it happen in your house, right?
And that because this week,
bullying between contestants in the villa,
that's taken the main focus.
With everything then reaching a breaking point
during Tuesday night's episode
during a challenge called Standing On Business.
Right, and for that challenge,
the producers had the contestants
write each other questions or notes
and each person had to stand in front of everyone
to address their messages.
So it's just a big airing of grievances.
And so you can imagine things got heated.
A girl named Maya was reduced to tears
after three men ganged up on her
because they didn't like that she, one, cries,
and two, calls people babe.
Which yeah, if you're not watching the show,
I am being serious.
That is what they were mad about.
And they did like a huge pile on attacking her for it.
Then the Daily Beast calling a misogynistic bullying
that went too far and even had hope walls, right?
The daughter of former VP candidate Tim Walls making a video calling these men toxic and arguing that they
represent how the Manisfier has made it so that men view feelings and empathy as a weakness. Also
you had people switching up from hating Huda to rushing to her defense after they felt three
contestants ganged up on her and bullied her during the challenge. But there's a huge difference
between bullying and entertainment and that's something Love Island clearly doesn't understand.
Last night's episode was actually unacceptable.
Get Shelly, Orlandia, and Ciara out of that villa right now
because the way that they are bullying Huda is not okay.
It is not okay that all of America is watching that happen
in the front of our eyes.
And I know that the producers see this.
I know that they see this and they think
that we're eating it up because it's content,
but it's not okay.
They're bullying her.
You're putting someone's mental health at risk.
And then because fans are so frustrated
with how things are playing out in the villa,
news actually broke this morning
that fan voting records for Love Island USA
have been broken this season.
With it seemingly somewhat to be connected
to fans feeling like they need to step in
and correct the actions of the islanders.
But also it brings up the question of
what is the actual lesson that's gonna be learned here?
Because if views are up, engagement is up,
you're breaking records.
It's very possible, if not arguably likely,
that there are gonna be a number of producers that go,
well, you've eaten the slop, so we're gonna keep making it.
You know, with all that said,
I gotta pass the questions off to you,
whether you're a big Love Island fan,
or you've really never watched
or even heard of this show before.
What are your thoughts based off of what we're seeing
and how things have been playing out?
And then there's even more we've gotta talk about
in a second, but I'm going to take a second
to sponsor myself and say, hey, if you haven't already,
you've got probably 24 to 36 hours to jump in on this.
And that is not only our brand new drop
over at beautifulbash.com, which I love,
full of microplastics and existential dread.
It is what it is and it's pretty terrible.
Things are less than ideal.
And our cat stand and fight tee, which by the way,
one, we initially launched us on Monday,
our quantity stuff was messed up.
So if you tried to get it and it was sold out,
I apologize.
Two, they're restocked and in new color ways.
And three, even though these are summertime tees,
if you want less fabric, you can also get our tank tops.
Oh, and four, probably the most important thing,
if you use code two bits before 4th of July ends,
you will get 25% off.
And that's off your entire order,
whether it's this new drop or best-selling classics,
all available at beautifulbasket.com.
Links in the description.
But then next up from that and the news today,
we've got to talk about this Louisiana music teacher
who taught at this school for more than 20 years,
and then he lost his job for being gay,
which just that alone is crazy,
but the how it got to this point, crazier.
Right, so this is Mark Richards,
and he started a relationship with a guy
who eventually became his husband in 2001.
And then in 2003, he starts working
at the St. Francis Xavier School in New Orleans.
Great Knit is a Catholic school,
which is important to the story.
Cause you see Mark's annual renewable employment contract,
it has a morality clause.
And specifically it banned teachers
from entering into a quote,
"'Marriage in violation of the rules of the Catholic Church,
"'actively engaging in homosexual activity
or participating in any other activity,
conflicting with the teachings of the religion.
And while all the teachers at schools affiliated
with the Roman Catholic archdiocese of New Orleans
have agreed to this,
a big key thing is that it has been selectively enforced
throughout history.
And Mark basically said that he signed the contract
because that seemed to be the case
and explaining that he never kept being gay a secret
and he was offered the job anyway.
And so, you know, he gets the job.
He is part of the community.
He is helping raising these children.
All of which then led to 2023, where there was heartbreak.
Because Mark's husband, he died of a heart attack.
And while, you know, he counted on the sympathy
and support from many members of the St. Francis community,
that ended up changing a few weeks ago.
Because some parent ended up finding
the almost two-year-old obituary,
realized Mark was gay, and then complained to the school on the archdiocese. With then, just a little over a week ago, a few weeks ago because some parent ended up finding the almost two-year-old obituary realized
Mark was gay and then complained to the school on the archdiocese. With then just a little over a
week ago the school telling him that they wouldn't be renewing his contract and claiming that he had
lied about his lifestyle in the past. Now with this I'll say this is not a situation where the
whole community is on the same page or when the news got around you had other parents organizing
a petition and they actually have now collected almost 5,000 signatures calling on the archdiocese
to reverse the decision and describing Mark as a beacon
of kindness and understanding.
But despite that, in an email to the community,
you had school officials saying this decision is final
and will not be revisited.
And then with that, you might be thinking,
okay, well, this is probably gonna get legal.
And to that point, Mark's spoken to a lawyer
to see if there'd be a way to get rid
of the morality clause going forward.
But I mean, looking into it,
legally his options may be limited.
Because as it turns out, there was one recent court ruling
that actually upheld a North Carolina Catholic school's
decision to fire a gay teacher
for planning to marry his partner.
But then looking into this even further,
even if this doesn't move forward,
the New Orleans archdiocese,
one more lawsuit would probably be
the least of their problems right now.
But for one, the organization's five years
into bankruptcy proceedings
tied to decades of child sexual abuse allegations,
with it recently agreeing to settle a case
involving more than 500 people who say they were abused
by clergy for nearly $180 million.
And then regarding St. Francis specifically,
a couple of years ago, the church's own pastor
actually pushed the state to release a priest
who had already been convicted of raping a child,
saying that it was justified on medical compassion grounds.
And then actually the attorney who helped him
with that campaign, he eventually got convicted
of molesting a child himself.
And so one, but you know, God forbid,
a gay man teach at a school.
And two, I've mentioned all that.
So you understand who is casting this person out.
You've got people doing the most bigoted bullshit
hiding behind.
Think of the children.
Meanwhile, you've got people on your staff
thinking of children.
But also let me stress, this is not a swing
at all religious people, not all Catholics,
anything like that.
And also, props to the families that stood by
and supported this teacher.
But then my friends, is the end of today's show.
Thank you for watching, thank you for subscribing,
and I hope you have a great weekend.
I'm looking forward to this one.
Wife and kids are back, gonna have some July 4th, whatever.
I might even destroy this room and get an actual set instead of just a wall.
Or maybe I'll procrastinate for two more weeks.
That one feels kind of more likely.
But either way, I'll see you right back here on Monday
because of course I got a brand new show for you
every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
at 6 p.m. Eastern, 3 p.m. Pacific.
Love you, mean it, bye.
