This may come as a surprise to you because I obviously look like a man who is
But I am not a gardener by trade.
But, you know, during the pandemic, we got a home garden because that's what you did.
You just like you did different things.
I don't know if you're aware of this.
I didn't know.
You're supposed to pick zucchinis when they're like seven to nine inches because they will
just continue growing.
What is this?
This is ridiculous.
I posted this on Twitter,
and someone told me that their mom calls these homewreckers,
which is the funniest thing I've ever heard anyone say.
Moms saying dirty stuff,
never not the best thing in the world.
But yeah, all of that to say is,
if anyone would like some zucchini bread, let me know.
But with that incredibly important update out of the way,
welcome back to the Philip DeFranco Show,
you beautiful bastard.
It's July 1st, 2021.
We're halfway through the year already.
How did that happen?
Also, I'll start you out with some fun trivia.
The sponsor of today's show, the Chinese Communist Party.
I'm kidding, obviously, not the sponsor.
One of the biggest threats to the world,
the Chinese Communist Party,
had turned 100 today, kind of.
As it turns out, the Communist Party leader Mao
was one of 13 people who attended the first party Congress
in July of 1921.
But that actually happened on July 23rd,
and Mao, he just remembered the wrong day
and established a holiday for July 1st,
which I think brings us to the most important truth
in our world.
If you say something with confidence and or you have immense power, reality can be whatever you say it is. Then let's
talk about obviously one of the biggest stories in entertainment right now, Britney Spears. News
came out and of course there's been big reactions over the last 24 hours, but I think there's also
been some misunderstandings. So as you may or may not have seen, there were reports yesterday saying
that a judge denied a motion
to remove Britney Spears' father, Jamie,
from his role as a conservator of her $60 million estate.
While that might sound shocking for a lot of people,
especially given Britney's emotional testimony
in court last week,
this move is actually not a direct response to that hearing.
Instead, this decision that's being reported on
is in response to a previous request
filed by Britney's attorneys back in November of last year.
At that time, her lawyer had argued
that Britney was afraid of her father and would refuse to perform again if he continued attorneys back in November of last year. At that time, her lawyer had argued that Britney was afraid of her father
and would refuse to perform again
if he continued to be in charge of her career.
So this was her team asking that Jamie be removed
as sole conservator upon the appointment
of the financial company Bessemer Trust.
And while the judge ultimately declined
to suspend Jamie from the conservatorship,
they did not rule out future petitions
for his removal and suspension,
though they did also appoint Bessemer Trust
as co-conservator.
So essentially what we're talking about here is the finalization of a decision that was already made. And as lawyer
and legal commentator Emily D. Baker noted on Twitter, this isn't a new ruling and this wasn't
a new motion, with her adding that really the only new thing here is Britney's father's opposition
to appointing Jodie Montgomery as a conservator. But the news being reported yesterday was not
completely pointless. I mean, it also serves as a way to keep the spotlight on this story. Because
once again, I mean, all of this coming out,
it feels like it has drastically changed public opinion
on this topic, as well as seemingly changing the opinion of
and actions of people involved in this matter,
or at least nearby.
For example, as I was finishing up today's show,
Bessemer Trust actually asked to withdraw
as co-conservator, reportedly saying in its filing
that it had not known of Ms. Spears' objection
to the conservatorship that governs her life,
saying it was told that Ms. Spears' conservatorship
was voluntary and that she had consented to the company
acting as co-conservator.
And ultimately here is saying
they want to respect her wishes.
So that's, I mean, that's a massive update,
especially as we get closer to the next pivotal date
in this being of course, July 14th.
And then, I mean, as far as other people's reactions
or kind of speaking out with this,
maybe it was affected by the new reports around this story, but we saw Iggy Azalea speaking up, writing a statement on social media.
And notably there, in addition to showing support for Britney Spears, she also talked about working
with Britney back in 2015, saying she personally witnessed some of the behavior that Britney had
described regarding her father, writing, I just want to back her up and tell the world that she
is not exaggerating or lying. I saw her restricted from even the most bizarre and trivial things,
like how many sodas she was allowed to drink.
Iggy also talking about an instance
where Jamie Spears allegedly waited until moments
before a performance with Britney Spears
to tell her that she wouldn't be allowed on stage
if she didn't sign an NDA.
Jamie Spears has a habit of making people sign documents
while under duress, it seems,
and Britney Spears should not be forced to coexist
with that man when she's made it clear
it is negatively impacting her health. Then we should definitely talk about this absolutely explosive news with
the LAPD blowing up. And for, I believe the first time, I'm not just using colorful language there,
like this was an actual explosion. So if you live in South Los Angeles and you heard or you
experienced some sort of loud boom,
that might've been when a police truck exploded.
It reportedly injured 10 officers, an ATF agent,
six civilians, though the good news here,
the LAPD has described all the injuries as mild to moderate
with no one in serious condition, so that is good news.
And as far as what happened, right,
what led to this craziness,
reportedly the police were tipped off
that a house in the area contained 5,000 pounds
of commercial grade fireworks.
And after raiding the house and arresting a 27 year old,
most of the explosives were loaded onto trucks
and moved off site for destruction.
However, officers discovered that the home also contained
what has been described as improvised explosive devices.
And with this technicians reportedly decided
that it would be safe to load those onto a police truck
made for destroying explosives
and get rid of them immediately.
But then something went catastrophically wrong.
The explosions caused cars to flip,
windows to be shattered in a two block radius.
And as for what went wrong,
the LAPD really isn't sure right now.
You have an official at the agency saying that quote,
"'Something happened in the containment vehicle
that should not have happened and we don't know why,
but we intend to find out why.'"
With the agency also requesting that the ATF
send more agents to figure out what exactly went wrong.
So we'll have to wait and see what happens there. but if there is a way that I can end this story,
I mean, I want to be like, hey,
if you live in California or an area experiencing extreme drought right now, maybe be careful over the weekend,
but I know it's not gonna really stop anyone. Like yeah, most fireworks are already illegal in California,
but every single year, and it's usually like a video from a plane, you see no one really cares.
So what I'll say is at the very least,
just please don't be stupid, stupid,
like stay away from forest areas or any,
there's gonna be a fire, we know there's gonna be a fire.
And I mean, it's also not just a California concern,
Portland has now banned fireworks
as the hot dry weather raises the chances
of forest fires dramatically,
as have several areas of Southwest Washington.
So you know, since it's gonna happen,
maybe the advice here is get a go bag ready
if you live in a dry area.
And or maybe just for 2021,
plan out some like random things
that you could do with a drop of a dime
because right now experts believe that 2021's fire season
is going to be worse than 2020's,
which was already one of the worst on record.
So enjoy that fun news.
From that, I wanna take a second to thank
the fantastic sponsor of today's show, Omax Health.
Many of you probably experienced some pain
that prevents you from relaxing, sleeping,
or everyday chores and exercise.
And when it comes to exercise,
I know recovery plays a huge role in sustaining motivation,
helping stick to a routine.
I mean, I'm constantly looking for reasons
why I shouldn't be doing this thing.
I was definitely feeling that way this morning,
but that is where Omex Health comes in.
They've developed a 100% natural non-prescription
cryo-freeze CBD roll-on.
And this triple action pain relief roll-on
is specifically formulated to reduce inflammation,
block pain receptors,
and improve joint and muscle flexibility.
It goes to work instantly to block pain and soreness,
which honestly has come in handy,
whether it be after my scooter accident a while back,
or is now a part of my new fitness routine,
which I have called Operation Look Dope While Having Sex.
Let's see if Omax lets me keep that in.
The main thing, whether it be, you know,
the more extremes or the everyday stuff,
Omax has helped in my recovery.
Best of all, right now they're offering 20% off,
not only their cryo-free CBD roll-on,
but site-wide when you use code DEFRANCO
at omaxdefranco.com.
That's O-M-A-X Defranco.com,
code Defranco for 20% off your entire purchase.
Then in big money and business news,
we should definitely talk about Robinhood
getting a smack in the face or on the wrist
if you really think about it.
And that is because FINRA,
the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority,
just imposed its largest fine ever on Robinhood.
Right, as you might remember,
Robinhood took a massive hit to its credibility
back in January during the GameStop AMC meme stock frenzy.
There've been a number of things.
I mean, one of the more recent ones back in April,
Robinhood's crypto trading crashed twice
while Dogecoin was multiplying in value.
And so, you know, with all of these things,
we've seen congressional investigations as well
as regulatory agencies and even everyday users of the app
accusing it of operational and regulatory lapses,
lapses which also resulted in many customers losing big.
And even before all of that,
you had the Securities and Exchange Commission
fining Robinhood $65 million for misleading customers.
And now FINRA is fining the company another $70 million
for that same reason as well,
as for the harm suffered by customers
during system outages from 2018 to 2020.
You know, with all this,
while Robinhood has said
that its mission is to democratize finance for all.
FINRA is also finding the company specifically
for giving customers the wrong information
about how to trade on margin, AKA with borrowed money,
as well as for not properly vetting some customers
who were approved for trade-in stock options
despite red flags.
So because of that, $12.6 million of the fine
will go to restitution for thousands of harmed customers.
Who, I mean, yes, if you followed the news
around Robinhood recently, also will include the family
of a 20 year old man who committed suicide
after he mistakenly believed that he had lost $75,000
in a risky bet on the app.
Yeah, I mean, the reason I say it's a bit of a slap
in the face, but also a slap on the wrist.
I mean, last year they reported that they did
about a billion dollars in revenue.
So for them, it gets to kind of just be the cost
of doing business in a shitty manner.
And I mean, as far as me personally, I'm never going back to the app, which I mean, also,
I will say for transparency reasons, after they really fucked up this year, I ditched them. I
ended up investing with and then partnering with public. So if you are someone that you're not
content with, like your money just kind of becoming less and less due to inflation in a
bank account, you want to start thinking about your future, definitely look into public.
You can use my code.
That's great.
There's a lot of cool, specific things
as far as why to use public.
But I think one of the biggest ones is,
you know, there are companies out there
that say that they are for the people.
And then there are companies out there
that are actually for the people.
Then we should definitely talk about this huge news
out of Canada.
I mean, it's a big story in its own right.
It's an update on something we've talked about before.
But where it starts is that today is Canada Day.
It's a day that marks a major milestone
in Canada's history towards full independence
from the United Kingdom.
But what we're now seeing this year
are many celebrations being canceled
amid calls to cancel the holiday
as the country continues to face its past
and come to terms with how it treated indigenous peoples.
I mean, we've talked about it some.
Over the last month or so,
over a thousand unmarked graves have been found
in British Columbia and Saskatchewan on the location of former residential schools.
With those schools having been around for about a hundred years into the 90s and were largely run by the Catholic Church and with funding from the Canadian government.
With their ultimate goal reportedly being to, quote, civilize indigenous peoples and what the government now recognizes as cultural genocide.
And the recent revelation of unmarked graves has emphasized how horrible the schools were as nearly every corpse was an indigenous child.
With the most recent of these finds being announced
by Lower Katooni Band on Wednesday,
revealing the ground penetrating radar exposed the bodies
of 182 at St. Eugene's Mission Residential School.
You know, the discovery of so many unmarked graves
is bittersweet for indigenous people.
I mean, for decades, they have claimed
that children would go missing at these schools,
but they were largely ignored.
So yes, there has to be validation in going,
"'Yes, see, we were telling the truth,
"'but also the truth is horrifying.'"
And with this, we've seen Canada seemingly trying
to reconcile its past by setting a commission
to investigate crimes and other injustices done
to Inuit, Metis, and First Nations.
With that commission estimating that 4,100 children
went missing in the residential school system,
but Murray Sinclair, who used to run the commission for nearly a decade,
thinks that that number could be well beyond 10,000.
The discoveries of so many of these unmarked graves not only caused cities to cancel Canada Day celebrations,
but also led to the Prime Minister addressing this issue in his Canada Day speech.
Following the horrific discoveries of hundreds of children at the sites of former residential schools in BC and Saskatchewan,
we all stopped to reflect on the historical and ongoing injustices.
And we, as Canadians, must be honest with ourselves about our history.
Because in order to chart a new and better path forward,
we have to recognize the terrible mistakes of our past.
Also, what's been interesting to see here
is while resentment towards the Canadian government
for the involvement in these injustices
towards indigenous people does remain split,
nearly all are still angry at the Catholic church
for its involvement.
With one of the big notable reasons being
that it has refused to apologize.
Right, the Canadian government has apologized
saying that it's working towards reconciliation.
You have the largest Protestant Church denomination
which ran a sizable minority of the schools also apologizing.
But the Catholic Church has not. Though there may be some movement on this front. The Pope has now agreed to meet delegates from
three of Canada's largest indigenous groups later this year to discuss the problem,
although that doesn't mean that there will be an apology for sure. Also, it appears that the overall frustrations here possibly have turned violent. This because
reportedly four Catholic churches
have been burnt down over the last week
and what police believe are suspicious circumstances
and possibly linked to the church's involvement
with residential schools.
Then, in interesting political news,
we should definitely talk about the house now
approving legislation to form a select committee
to investigate the January 6th insurrection.
And what was actually really cool
and it made me feel like proud to be an American
is that the vote was very bipartisan.
We already knew that all the Democrats
were going to vote for it, but then Republicans,
I mean, two of them, two of them voted with the Democrats.
220 Democrats and two Republicans.
With those two unsurprisingly being
Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.
Now, as far as what we know moving forward,
this new select committee will reportedly be designed
similarly to the panel formed
by the Republican controlled house in 2014 to investigate the Benghazi attack.
The body, which will have subpoena power,
will consist of 13 members, eight named by Democrats,
five appointed with input by Republicans.
Also, reportedly among other elements
of the January 6th attacks,
the panel will specifically look
at former President Trump's role
in inspiring the violent mob,
something the Republicans have largely rejected
despite their initial condemnation
of the president at that time.
Myth, notably now, members of the Republican party
slamming this new committee as a partisan power grab.
People like Jim,
please don't Google my wrestling coach background,
Jordan saying,
I know I've got real concerns
that this is all just political
and that this is impeachment three against president Trump.
But on the other side,
you have Democrats for their part,
painting this move as a necessary one with Pelosi saying,
you know, this is her second choice.
She would rather have a bipartisan committee,
but Mitch McConnell killed that possibly happening
in the Senate, saying Republicans left them no choice
and adding, we have a duty to the constitution
and to the American people to find the truth of January 6th
and to ensure that such an assault on our democracy
can never happen again.
And rather than being frivolous with the facts,
we are going to be prayerful and patriotic
and honor the concerns of the American people
by seeking and finding the truth to protect our country.
Now, as far as what happens next,
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has actually already now rolled
down her list of panel appointments,
which include seven Democrats,
and Cheney Hu has said she is honored
to be on this committee.
And that, you know, is very significant,
especially because it's been reported
that McCarthy told his members behind closed doors
that he would strip them of their committee assignments
if they accepted an appointment from Pelosi.
Now McCarthy, for his part, during a press conference today,
denied making that alleged threat, but added,
let me be very clear,
I'm not threatening anybody with committee assignments.
What I'm saying is, it was shocking to me
that if a person is a Republican,
they get their committee assignments
from the Republican conference.
For somebody to accept committee assignments
from Speaker Pelosi, that's unprecedented.
But ultimately, that is where I'm going to end today's show. I would really love to know your
thoughts on anything that stood out to you today. Also, thank you in advance for liking that video,
subscribing if you're new here, all the good stuff. Hopefully I made consuming the news a
less miserable experience for you. But with that said, of course, as always, my name's Philip
DeFranco. You've just been filled in. I love your faces and I'll see you next time.
