We have to talk about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.
Very likely, you've already seen the video of the shooting.
I'm not going to show it again here because YouTube will suppress this video
and there's a lot of really important stuff we need to touch on.
Right, this happening to the former president of the United States,
possibly our next one as well, at a rally in Pennsylvania.
The men, after the shooter was down, standing up triumphantly,
blood running down his face, raising a fist to the crowd and saying,
fight, fight, fight, with the crowd then erupting in USA chants.
And while all of that happened on Saturday,
there is still so much we have to talk about with this.
I mean, we have everything we now know about the attack,
about the man behind it, also what we don't know.
And then of course, there's all this discourse
that's been triggered about the Secret Service,
political violence, conspiracy theories,
and just the fate of American democracy as we know it.
But to properly get to all those places,
we need to start with the basics.
But with the first thing to note being that
while a bullet just grazed Donald Trump's ear,
one rally goer was actually killed
and two others were critically injured.
With the man killed being a former fire chief
and father of two who reportedly spent his final moments
diving down in front of his family,
protecting them from gunfire.
With of course, many left and right sending love,
thoughts and prayers to his family,
including the likes of VP Harris, who said,
"'Doug and I extend our deepest condolences
"'to the family of Cory Comparatore,
"'who was tragically killed
"'at former President Trump's rally.
"'He was a husband, father, and firefighter
"'who was shielding his family from gunfire.
"'Our hearts break for this loss
"'from yesterday's abhorrent violence.'"
Though this also is there was another reaction
from people online who said, they'll get over it.
With a lot of people sharing a screenshot
of a social media reply he posted saying, they'll get over it, With a lot of people sharing a screenshot of a social media reply he posted saying,
"'They'll get over it,' the Japanese did."
To a Sky News article that said,
"'Over a million people have fled their homes in Gaza
"'with many following Israeli warnings
"'to evacuate to the south.'"
And really that's just one example
of the drastically different reactions we're seeing
from everyone on almost every single topic here.
But with all that said, right,
with Trump seemingly being the target here,
the shooting is being investigated
as both an attempted assassination
and as an act of domestic terrorism.
And as far as the shooter who was reportedly killed
by a Secret Service sniper after getting off those shots,
he was a 20-year-old man from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
Reportedly, he had no apparent history
of mental health issues or previous threats.
He wasn't on the radar of federal law enforcement.
You also had the FBI saying
that he appeared to have acted alone,
which is to say that law enforcement
hasn't found any evidence of there being a larger plot or connection to any foreign powers, for example.
But this is they're also not ruling out any possibilities until the investigation is complete.
As far as the weapon that he used, it was an AR-15 type semi-automatic rifle that his father had legally purchased.
With the FBI saying that it wasn't clear whether the father gave his son the weapon or whether he took it without permission.
It was also revealed that bomb making materials were found inside the shooter's vehicle and his home.
But you know, with all that,
the family is reportedly cooperating with the investigation.
And of course, one of the biggest mysteries right now
is why did he do this?
As of filming, the shooter doesn't seem to have left behind
any statement on social media or otherwise
that could easily explain his reasons.
And then regarding the two pieces of information
that we do actually have that gives some sort of hint
towards his political beliefs,
they point in two opposite directions.
Because in 2021, as a junior in high school,
the gunman reportedly donated $15
to a political action committee
aligned with the Democratic Party.
But then eight months later,
he registered to vote as a member of the Republican Party
and even voted in the midterms.
And so as of right now,
you have FBI officials continuing to look
into his background and social media activities
while also working to get access to his phone.
Of course, that hasn't stopped people online
from speculating.
With so many people just making claims.
Or you have people who don't want him to have been a Republican saying,
oh, he was only registered as a Republican
because he wanted to vote in closed primaries in Pennsylvania.
The real thing about where he was aligned, that was with the donation.
But then you have people who don't want him to have been a Democrat going,
oh, that $15 donation, there's an easy answer for that.
Claiming because he donated on January 20th,
that that's obviously a date of when you would donate money if you lost a bet. Others then speculating that it was just a
donation because he was so horrified by what he saw on January 6th. And then really more in the
middle, you have others going, well, just look at the timing. He made that donation, but there's no
shortage of people on this planet that were for one side and then switched to another. Though again,
in actuality, we don't know the answers right now. Though as far as other information we do have,
we have news organizations speaking to his former classmates
and they've revealed some seemingly relevant details.
For example, we learned that he apparently tried out
but didn't make his school's rifle team.
He was also apparently bullied at school
and sat alone at lunchtime with him specifically being mocked
for wearing clothes like hunting outfits.
Images of the shooter have come out showing
that he was wearing a Demolition Ranch T-shirt
when he carried out the attack.
Right, and that's a gun channel on YouTube
with over 10 million subscribers.
And with that, there's been a lot of discourse,
some people blaming them,
others saying that it's not an outright political channel.
As far as the shooter wearing the shirt,
some saying, well, obviously he's a supporter,
others saying that he's wearing it
just as a way to fit in at the rally.
And all this even getting to the point
that Matt Carriker of Demolition Ranch
had to upload a video today,
with him appearing as shocked and heartbroken
as so many others, sending well wishes to those affected,
right, the man who was killed, those who were injured. also noting the obvious right no one's you know vetting people
that are buying their merch with matt then also plainly stating no matter what side you're on
politically none of us want violence this channel was never meant to incite violence or hate it
never has it isn't and it never will be a channel that does that i don't want any violence or hate. It never has, it isn't, and it never will be a channel that does that.
I don't want any violence or hate anywhere around me. I have a wife and little kids. I want them to
be safe and secure forever. And the videos I put out, I want to make sure that is the same for
everyone who watches my videos, that they aren't in any more danger because of my videos. Now,
with that said, going back to the shooter
and his classmates making claims,
you hear the Philadelphia Inquirer saying
they spoke to Max R. Smith,
who was a former classmate of the shooter,
with Max reportedly saying he definitely was conservative.
It makes me wonder why he would carry out
an assassination attempt on the conservative candidate.
Reports also saying Smith shared an American history class
with the shooter and remembered a mock debate
where their teacher made students stand on one side
or another to signal their allegiance, which at the very least sounds incredibly problematic and
inappropriate if it actually happened. But Mack's saying the majority of the class were on the
liberal side, but the shooter, no matter what, always stood his ground on the conservative side.
That's still the picture I have of him, just standing alone on one side while the rest of
the class was on the other. But again, we've just been getting bits and pieces of information and
claims since the shooting happened. And I'm a big believer that we need to wait for more and more information to come in and to see what comes from
the investigation. Then of course, also with this, you know, one of the big questions is how this
20 year old who apparently couldn't make his high school shooting team almost pulled this off. With
a massive thing there specifically being the question of how was he able to get within 150
meters of where Trump was speaking, which understand is a distance from which any decent
marksman could reasonably hit a human sized target and is basically the minimum requirement for recruits to the U.S. Army. And
there, what's actually wild is he did reportedly attract law enforcement's attention at the rally,
with one witness even saying, we noticed a guy crawling, you know, bear crawling up the roof.
We're pointing at him. The police are down there running around on the ground. We're like, hey,
man, there's a guy on the roof
with a rifle.
And the police were like, huh, what?
You know, like they didn't know what was going on.
And another saying.
I was up at the fence line,
saw the guy move from roof to roof,
talked, told an officer that he was on the roof.
And so reportedly this all sparked a search,
but officers were unable to find him.
That is until one officer actually climbed to the roof and found the shooter, who then pointed his rifle at the roof. And so reportedly this all sparked a search, but officers were unable to find him. That is until one officer actually climbed to the roof
and found the shooter,
who then pointed his rifle at the officer.
But some reports saying that then forced the officer
back down the ladder,
others saying when someone pointed a gun at him,
he accidentally fell off the officer he was underneath.
But then either way,
that seemingly gave him the time
to fire quickly toward Trump.
And all this is at the same time,
more people on the ground noticed the gunman
in the seconds before he opened fire.
Fire!
Fire! Fire!
Fire!
So the fact that this guy was apparently seen on rooftops
before he started shooting,
it's at the very least a bad look for the Secret Service.
In fact, some have called it the Secret Service's
most stunning failure in decades.
With former Secret Service agents telling outlets
that the shooter should have never been allowed
to gain access to the roof.
And notably adding there that such a lapse
could have been caused by officers neglecting their posts
or a flaw in the event security plan.
Although there you do also have people
praising certain individual agents for their swift action.
Right, like the guy who actually took the shooter out
with one former agent saying,
this counter sniper made an amazingly quick decision
and clearly saved Trump's life.
But you know, with all this,
you now have House Republican leaders saying
they'll launch a full investigation
into the secret service's handling of the event.
You also have President Biden saying
that he has directed the Secret Service
to provide Trump with every resource to ensure his safety.
He's also called for an independent review
of the security measures at the rally.
And there, you know, we've seen President Biden,
who's already addressed the incident several times,
really focusing on condemning political violence in general.
There's no place in America for this kind of violence,
for any violence ever.
Period.
No exceptions.
We can't allow this violence to be normalized.
You know, the political record in this country
has gotten very heated.
It's time to cool it down.
Though this is we're seeing a number of different reactions
from Republicans.
You know, you have the likes of Republican House Speaker,
Mike Johnson saying everyone needs to turn the rhetoric down.
Though this is you have folks like Mike Collins,
a Republican from Georgia making totally unfounded claims
that Joe Biden sent the orders.
With him then calling for the Republican district attorney
in Butler County, PA to immediately file charges
against Biden for inciting an assassination.
With that, referencing a comment from Biden
that said it's time to put Trump in the bullseye.
With the apparent context of that statement
being the Biden campaign's efforts to step up
its criticism of Trump rather than it be all the other chaos.
Also the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene
not listening to Mike Johnson.
With her tweeting,
we are in a battle between good and evil.
The Democrats are the party of pedophiles
murdering the innocent unborn,
violence and bloody, meaningless, endless wars.
They want to lock up their political opponents
and terrorize innocent Americans
who would tell the truth about it.
The Democrat party is flat out evil
and yesterday they tried to murder President Trump.
Which of course, in addition to the usual pushback
you see against the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene,
you had people saying it especially does not make sense in this specific situation. With of course, in addition to the usual pushback you see against the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene, you had people saying it especially does not make sense
in this specific situation.
With of course, among other things,
people pointing to the shooter
being a registered Republican.
There's also in this situation,
a lot of fighting around who is causing what, right?
You have the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene
and others saying, you know,
the real threat is from Democrats.
We've also seen people from both sides getting angry
at the likes of Joe Biden and Governor Gretchen Whitmer
referencing the multiple acts of violence
that have happened on both sides in the past.
Or with Governor Whitmer saying,
"'The shooting of former President Trump
"'was a disgusting act of violence
"'that caps off an alarming years-long trend
"'in our politics.
"'There have been incidents we all know,
"'a shooting at a practice
"'for the congressional baseball game,
"'the plot to kidnap and kill me,
"'the storming of the Capitol,
"'and an in-home assault on the former speaker
"'of the House's husband.'"
And as far as how saying that could anger people
from both sides, you have a number of people
from both sides saying it's a false equivalency.
Right, a number on the right don't see January 6th
as a real thing, some then going further saying
that that was referenced to almost like make it okay
that this happened to Trump.
But then on the other side, you have a lot of liberals
and Democrats saying a lot of the violence and the threats,
it's actually coming from just one side mainly.
And actually regarding this topic and debate,
you had a lot of people pointing to Reuters.
And that because they've documented hundreds of threats
to local election officials by Trump supporters
angered by his false claims that the election was rigged.
As well as saying they found that violent threats
against judges handling Trump's various criminal
and civil trials spiked after the former president
criticized those judges.
And in general, they said they found that while violence
has been committed in the name of all sides,
attacks on people from beatings to killings
were mostly by suspects acting in the name of right-wing political
beliefs and ideology. And then, you know, going further, you also had a lot of people pointing
out how differently people have reacted to the different attacks. With many there, raising the
example of what happened to Paul Pelosi. Right, Nancy Pelosi's husband, right, the guy who was
attacked with a hammer back in 2022. There you had Trump mocking the two of them, his sons and
other supporters sharing all sorts of false claims related to the attack on Pelosi.
But in any case, with whoever you think gets the blame
on a number of these issues or with whatever,
an unfortunate fact is that violence
in American politics has been normalized.
And that's scary for a lot of reasons,
including that experts on democratic decline say
that rising political violence is one of the warning signs.
And notably, when someone on one side is attacked,
the other becomes more likely to respond in kind.
And so really like the coming months,
and especially this week,
are gonna be very interesting to watch.
Do we potentially see both sides sort of recalibrate?
And with that, is there an attempt to ease tensions,
or is it to lean in and incite?
What will we witness at this upcoming RNC,
and then the DNC, and just in general?
With the very least, right now,
both sides have issued their own calls for national unity. With Trump, for example, telling news outlets that he's actually rewriting
a speech that he plans to give at the Republican National Convention to focus on the topic. Also,
another big thing that ends up actually being connected is that Trump announced his VP today,
and that ended up being J.D. Vance, a man who Fox News even reported in the past said,
I'm a never Trump guy, never liked him, terrible candidate, idiot if you've ever voted for him. He
also suggested he may be America's Hitler. That said, in recent years, he has become one of the biggest diehard Trump
supporters. So big news, a lot playing out, but as far as how things play out from here, we'll have
to wait to see. But hey, while you leave a comment on any and all of that, or you just sit back,
you're just trying to take it all in, I just want to say hi, welcome back to the Philip DeFranco

But then to shift gears, let's talk about Cody Cook
because he has absolutely blown up online
in the past 24 hours.
And if you don't know, he's a massive YouTuber,
content creator, podcaster, he DJs now.
And the reason his name's popping up
all over the place right now
is there's this massive wave of pressure
for him to address allegations
that he had sex with Tana Mongeau back when she was 17.
But those allegations reportedly just kind of simmering
quietly in the open for a while,
but then they started making waves earlier this year
when Tana mentioned it on her podcast.
But really this whole situation has blown up
in the last 24 hours after D'Angelo Wallace
made a video about it.
And it's prompted a ton of discussion online.
And we'll start with some of the claims at hand, right?
So a lot of this first started getting attention last month when Tana did a live show of her podcast and said,
Who's the smallest dick you've ever had?
Oh my God, did no one look at me. Cody Coe.
Wendy's most important deal of the day has a fresh lineup.

Restrictions apply. See in-store or online for details.
I can say that I was literally 17.
And once that clip made it to TikTok, people started doing the math, realizing that if Tana was 17, Cody would have likely been 25 at the time. With Tana herself then further clarifying the claim on her podcast later in June saying,
yeah, people did the right math. This isn't just some crazy tea. It was a crime. I hooked up with
Cody Cole when I was 17 and he was 25. When I look back at the Cody situation, it is, I definitely
am like, why was he doing that? You know what I mean? But I don't associate
or hold it with trauma because I am such a comparative person where I'm like, so many
worse things have happened to me. And that's bad. With Dana saying that she was such a big fan of
his and as an adult, it's easier to look back and say she was taken advantage of, but she's not sure
she felt that way. But also saying that even though she doesn't feel traumatized, she knows it's wrong with her.
Then going on to Trisha Paytas' podcast and adding.
But at the same time,
like if I had a 17 year old daughter
or a little sister or something,
like I would kill.
Well, seemingly all these things
got certain pockets of the internet to pay attention.
I mean, the situation did not blow up
the way it has until yesterday.
D'Angelo posting a video titled
An Uncomfortable Conversation About Cody Co,
which racked up over a million views as of this morning.
With him going through these allegations
and condemning Cody for not addressing them.
With him noting that, yes, right now,
they're just allegations, but they are serious.
And D'Angelo further arguing that Cody has every right
to share his side of the story,
but so far, his silence makes him look really bad.
Even if what Tana says is false,
your silence is still grossly incompetent at best.
Why are you choosing the path that would
be your only option if you were guilty? With them also pointing to some of the responses people have
seen, which include people trying to dismiss Tana's claims by calling her a liar or saying
that she's doing this for attention and saying. The person has tried to come forward about her
experience and has been met with the most vitriolic victim blaming I've seen in years.
She's been dismissed, discredited, and disbelieved
before anybody ever gave her a chance
because it's Tana, which sets a horrible precedent
that if a person runs out of goodwill,
they lose the right to come forward with their experiences.
That's actually something Tana touched on
during her own podcast.
I have seen so many comments of people like,
on some like, but what was she wearing?
And then I just like,
I feel so bad for all of these young girls because then they see that and then it makes
them not want to come forward. And then I am like, wow, everyone. Yeah. Like seeing people not
believe you is so crazy. And there she said, you know, if she had more public favor or even if
Cody had less, the responses would be totally different. With this, you also had D'Angelo
saying that it appears Gabby Hannah previously backed Tana's story Tana saying
that Gabby kind of witnessed this and tried to intervene and D'Angelo saying that he found an
old clip where she told this story one time I told a guy I saw him making out with a girl at a party
who was underage and I pulled him aside and I was like hey man you probably don't know I know she
like looks a little older she's underage watch it and he's like, hey man, you probably don't know. I know she like looks a little older, she's underage.
Watch it.
And he was like, oh my God, thank you for telling me.
And then he tarred that.
So the responses to all this have been massive.
People slamming Cody in his Instagram comments.
And folks on Twitter are saying things like,
people being okay with Cody Ko hooking up
with an underage Tana because it's Tana
is actually disgusting and further plays
into the idea of the perfect victim.
Someone can be a terrible person and still be a victim.
Her controversy does not take away what he did to her.
Now there you also have some people talking about
the age of consent in different states,
but regarding that, you have a number of folks
countering that saying things like,
a lot of grown adults spend a lot of time trying to,
well, actually the age of consent and it's vile.
17 year old is a minor, minors are children,
children cannot consent.
And even in areas where it's not quote illegal,
it's immoral and wrong 100% of the time.
But ultimately that is where we are with this right now.
Though I don't think that this is gonna be where it ends.
Like I mentioned, this has been getting more
and more attention while D'Angelo Wallace's video
on YouTube has just passed a million views.
Over on Twitter, a lot of the clips
and the segments have multi-million views.
Other big commentary channels are now chiming in
like Moist Critical.
One of the big consistent things we've seen
are pushes for Cody to actually address the claims.
But for now, we'll have to wait to see
how all this plays out.
And of course, if and when he does,
I'll wanna update this story,
but ultimately that's where we are right now.
And then, y'all, the Copa America game in Miami was wild.
And not just because Argentina had a record-breaking win
or because Messi got injured,
but also because of the fans and the stampede
that happened before the game.
With many who reportedly didn't have tickets
trying to get in, rushing Hard Rock Stadium,
pushing through security, actually delaying the game
because of all the mayhem.
I mean, you had people climbing walls
and trying to get into air vents to enter the stadium.
With the stadium spokesperson saying,
"'The situation is unprecedented,'
and adding that there was real concern
that people were gonna get crushed."
And then beyond that, you also had reports saying
that people were trying to hold up others
suffering from the heat,
with there being videos of people being carried,
seemingly unconscious or about to lose consciousness.
And Miami-Dade fire rescue confirming
they were having to treat people with heat-related issues.
So you have people concerned not only that this happened,
but also they're concerned that Hard Rock Stadium
is set to host a game of the World Cup in 2026,
which is also why the Miami-Dade mayor
and the chief public safety officer releasing a statement
saying the local police provided more than 550 officers
for the game and adding,
that they are outraged by the unprecedented events
at Sunday's Copa America final.
Saying it is disappointing that a night of celebration
was impacted by unlawful and unsafe behavior.
And adding, let's be clear,
this situation should never have taken place
and cannot happen again.
We will work with stadium leadership
to ensure that a full review of tonight's events
takes place immediately to evaluate the full chain of events
in order to put in place needed protocols and policies
for all future games.
And this is the Columbia head coach
reliving the heat of the moment,
saying, imagine from the locker room,
we were trying to communicate with family members,
with friends to see if they were in trouble or not.
It was overwhelming.
Them calling the situation chaotic and adding,
we tried to keep the team calm, but there was anxiety.
So it'd be interesting to see
if this is just a taste of what is to come
with the World Cup,
or if this was just an outlier,
or if this is the shakeup that they needed to make sure
that things are prepped for the World Cup.
But then in huge tech news,
OpenAI is allegedly blocking its employees
from coming forward with safety concerns.
With whistleblowers from OpenAI sending a letter to the SEC
with some wild allegations.
They're saying that the company made staff sign
overly restrictive employment severance
and non-disclosure agreements that could have led to some serious consequences for workers
who raise concerns about OpenAI to federal regulators. And also, like, when I say overly
restrictive, I'm not using that term lightly. See, according to the letter, those agreements required
OpenAI's employees to waive their federal right to whistleblower compensation and demand staff get
approval from the company before disclosing any information to regulators. They also allegedly
didn't create any exemptions
from their non-disparagement clauses
for employees telling the SEC
about securities violations within the company.
This is the attorney representing the OpenAI whistleblowers
said that these agreements threatened criminal prosecution
and quote, severe sanctions
if employees reported problems to federal authorities.
And according to the letter,
these agreements break longstanding federal laws
and regulations meant to protect whistleblowers.
With one of the letters authors saying in the Washington Post, these agreements break longstanding federal laws and regulations meant to protect whistleblowers. With one of the letter's authors saying in the Washington Post,
these contracts send a message that we don't want employees talking to federal regulators. And
adding, I don't think that AI companies can build technology that is safe and in the public interest
if they shield themselves from scrutiny and dissent. Now, notably, this letter was sent to
SEC Chairman Gary Gensler on July 1st, and a copy was reportedly provided to Congress, which is also
how we know about it because the Washington Post recently acquired
it from Senator Chuck Grassley's office and they published it. There the senator is saying in a statement,
OpenAI's policies and practices appear to cast a chilling effect on whistleblowers rights to speak up and receive due
compensation for the protected disclosures. In order for the federal government to stay one step ahead of artificial intelligence, OpenAI's
nondisclosure agreements must change. And that change is exactly what the whistleblowers are asking for here. With the latter urging the SEC to require every non-disclosure
agreement OpenAI has issued to be presented for inspection and fine them for each improper one
found. Also, they're saying that OpenAI should be required to contact all their past and current
employees to notify them of the company's violation, as well as inform them that they
have a right to anonymously contact the SEC to report anything illegal within the company.
Now with that said, a spokesperson for OpenAI
has responded to this situation saying in a statement,
"'Our whistleblower policy protects employees' rights
to make protected disclosures.
Additionally, we believe rigorous debate
about this technology is essential
and have already made important changes
to our departure process to remove non-disparagement terms.'"
But with that, also, it should be noted
that we don't know whether the SEC
has actually opened an investigation
into these allegations yet.
But there's only a knowing that a spokesperson told Reuters
in an emailed statement that the commission doesn't comment
on the existence of a whistleblower submission.
But either way, something that should garner
at least some attention since we're talking about a company
that wants to build AGI.
But as far as the whistleblowers, I'm sure they'll be fine
as long as they don't have any concerning information
that they wanna share about Boeing.
But then in other big Trump news we have to talk about,
a Trump appointed federal judge just dismissed
the classified documents criminal case against him
in an absolutely stunning decision
that goes against decades of precedent.
Right, just this morning,
US District Judge Aileen Cannon
tossed the case in its entirety
based on the long shot argument by Trump's team
that the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith
violated the constitution.
With Cannon ruling specifically that Smith's appointment
as special counsel by US Attorney General Merrick Garland
went against the constitution's appointments clause.
With that saying that officers of the United States
must be appointed by the president
and confirmed by the US Senate.
With Cannon writing there that Garland didn't have
the authority to quote, appoint a federal officer
with the kind of prosecutorial power wielded
by special counsel Smith.
You know, this decision, it's a massive bombshell
for a number of reasons.
First of all, it goes against numerous other court rulings.
I mean, court decisions going all the way back
to the Watergate era have upheld the legality
of the process for naming independent prosecutors.
And it also rolls back nearly three decades of precedent
for how special counsels get their jobs.
And secondly, because of all that,
this legal theory had been widely considered
a far-fetched argument, unlikely to go anywhere.
I mean, Trump's team didn't even start pushing it
until they were urged to do so by conservative legal groups.
And also a very key thing here is they didn't ask
the Democrat appointed judge overseeing
the election interference case in DC
to dismiss the case on the same grounds.
That's even though Garland also appointed Smith
to oversee both the DC and Florida cases
in the same exact way.
In fact, I mean, in hearings on the matter last month,
Judge Cannon herself acknowledged a precedent
appeared to support Smith's appointment by Garland,
where they're saying that there would be a high legal bar
to overturn that decision.
But then two weeks ago, of course, something happened.
The conservative majority of the Supreme Court,
they granted Trump and President
sweeping immunity against prosecution.
And notably, in a totally bizarre concurring opinion,
Justice Clarence Thomas questioned
whether Smith's appointment was constitutional
and urged lower courts to consider the matter.
And that's despite the fact that Smith's appointment
wasn't being considered by the court at all,
and they hadn't even raised it in the case.
But the thing is, while Cannon's decision
is absolutely wild, it's also not surprising.
And not with what was just mentioned, right?
Since the get-go, Cannon has made a ton
of super unusual decisions and controversial rulings,
widely seen as favoring Trump,
with those including hearing out many far-fetched
and sometimes totally bogus claims
that experts say most federal judges
wouldn't have even considered.
But this decision, dismiss the case on these grounds,
is totally beyond anything we've seen,
and it marks another huge victory for Trump
on the heels of the immunity ruling
I mean
Especially because Trump's team has long viewed the documents case as the strongest of the four criminal cases against it in part because it concerned
Actions that he took after leaving office
So it was seen as less likely to be impacted by the immunity ruling which is expected to influence the other criminal cases against it
As far as what happens next here one, you know
Cannon's ruling here will not immediately affect the DC case against Trump,
where Smith is also serving as special counsel.
And that's because only the DC Circuit Court of Appeals
and the Supreme Court can direct the judge
overseeing that case.
Though also to that point, Cannon's ruling
is all but certain to be appealed
and might even eventually make its way up
to the Supreme Court.
And while things seem geared to play out in Trump's favor,
really, no matter how that plays out,
at least for the short term,
this is a massive win for him.
Because while there was a belief
that maybe the documents case wouldn't go to trial
until after the election, this all but ensures.
And then if and when he wins the presidency,
he can just use his power over the DOJ
to effectively stop the case.
