Sup you beautiful bastards, hope you're having a fantastic Friday.
Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco Show, and if you're new here, on Fridays we do things a little bit different.
On Fridays, if I can, I try to cover stories from earlier in the week that we wanted to get to, we didn't get to, and more viewer-requested stories.
And so with that said, let's just jump into it.
The first thing we're going to talk about today is a viewer-requested story.
We had Dua Lipa in the news this week, and this is because when she was performing her second of two shows in China,
there was video of people in the audience being dragged out by security.
Now with that video, there were allegations
that the people being pulled out,
they were being pulled out because they were standing.
According to the caption with that video,
fans were forbidden to stand and were forced to sit down.
There were also other videos and allegations
that people were being pulled out
because they were waving rainbow flags.
Following these moments, we saw Dua Lipa address the crowd,
seemingly about to break into tears.
I want to create a really safe environment for us all to have fun.
I want us all to dance, I want us all to sing, I want us all to just have a really good time.
We're not here for much longer, we have only a few more songs.
And I would love for these last few songs for us to really really really enjoy ourselves. How about that?
And following the event she went to Twitter and wrote, Last night I did it for my fans, a promised show. I stood by them, sang with them, and danced with them.
I will stand by you all for your love and beliefs,
and I am proud and grateful that you felt safe enough to show your pride at my show.
What you did takes a lot of bravery.
I always want my music to bring strength, hope, and unity.
I was horrified by what happened, and I send love to all my fans involved.
I would love to come back for my fans when the time is right
and hopefully see a room full of rainbows.
I love you, Shanghai.
So just kind of your daily reminder that you're normal, you're standard as far as human beings treating other people.
That is not other people's normal and standard way of life.
And while disappointing and hopefully people in those areas talking about it more it leads to change,
it's also a reminder of why we should be thankful for our positions.
Then we had some community and entertainment news.
First up, there's a channel on YouTube
you've most likely never heard of before
if you are not a parent, and that is Little Baby Bum.
They're a channel that features nursery rhymes for kids.
It also features 3D animation.
It is immensely popular.
In fact, it is the ninth most watched
YouTube channel of all time.
It's most popular video, just a video,
has over 2.1 billion views.
And reportedly, the company was recently acquired
by Moonbug for an estimated eight to 11 million dollars.
And I know there are some people that would see that
and go, wait, so for this kind of stupid nursery rhyme
channel, someone paid 10 million dollars, that's stupid.
To that, what I would say is if those numbers are accurate,
Moonbug got a deal.
I've seen what some of these channels at these levels
can make and oh boy did they get a deal.
And, according to reports reports Moonbug will also
Be trying to bring this to linear TV. So all of a sudden you're diversifying revenue stream just from a business standpoint
It's going to be very interesting to watch then according to ad week some of those YouTube premium shows and maybe you've wanted to watch
But you didn't want to sign up for YouTube premium
Well, according to Susan Daniels YouTube's global head of original content
They may actually bring it out for a short period of time.
Telling Adweek,
I think we're going to win with giving a lot of shows, maybe 50%, maybe two-thirds, an AVOD window of some sort.
Maybe a day, a week, a month.
And AVOD is ad-based video on demand.
Essentially, it would be out there, ad-supported, instead of behind a paywall.
And if that's the case, I think that's a fantastic idea.
Because while originally they used to be YouTube Red originals, now YouTube Premium originals,
while at the beginning there weren't really a lot of good pieces, I mean, there have been some really good hits that have come out.
Cobra Kai, of course, is the one a lot of people talk about, and I think rightly so.
It's a really good series.
Also, Liza Koshy's was good.
YouTube's also been smart in serving fandoms, like with their BTS coverage.
But for me, what I really wonder, and, you know, I can pass the question off to you for those of you that have YouTube Premium.
Do you personally have and subscribe to YouTube Premium because you want access to those originals?
Or is it really more of just you know no ads your supporting creators, you know background play all the stuff that comes with it
Is it more of that because and I could be wrong here? I'm not in your brain
I feel like it's more of those features rather than the originals in general at least for the reason of why you would be subscribed for
An extended period of time and finally in community news
We had Logan Paul and the news for two reasons. The first being
that yesterday his immensely large YouTube channel appeared to be hacked. There was a video put up
called Giving Away 1500 iPhones that had a bunch of bit.ly links that seemed incredibly sketchy,
and that video remained up, I believe it was at least one to two hours, and so I'm personally
just wondering how many of these, like, very young kids clicked the link. But also, too, he was in
the news because there's just been more and more talk
about him genuinely fighting in the UFC.
And not with just some throwaway fighter,
there is an exciting name being attached to this
and that is Sage Northcutt.
Which if you're not familiar with the UFC,
who Sage Northcutt is, he is a freak of an athlete.
And regarding the potential fight, Sage says he's on board,
he thinks it could be massive.
But then also interestingly enough, he said it doesn't even need to be UFC, he would be willing to box him.
And that could actually be an option because as of last week, Sage Northcutt announced that he was a free agent.
So who knows, we may be getting closer and closer to a real deal situation from something that originally started with,
ah, that would be stupid.
And once again, I say from a business standpoint, it just might make sense.
I mean, just think about how many people purchased the KSI Logan Paul fight because they wanted to see Logan Paul get beat down
But in this situation you'd be swapping out a KSI who was training incredibly hard
But with an actual UFC fighter money moves and in this situation money may also in a separate UFC quickie
Conor McGregor is being sued you might remember back in April Conor McGregor attacked a bus. The incident left several people injured. Conor McGregor was
arrested and charged with three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief. With his criminal charges,
he entered into a plea deal and he pled down to just one count of disorderly conduct. All he was required to do was
perform five days of community service and three days of anger management counseling.
But the news broke this week that one of the fighters that was on that bus, Michael Chiesa is suing McGregor for assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
And according to the court records,
he alleges that McGregor quote,
"'Without permission or suitable reason
"'and without provocation entered a room
"'and or area at the subject location
"'and did take a hand truck, a barricade
"'and or other heavy objects and throw it slash them
"'into a bus in which plaintiff and others were occupying,
"'causing property damage to the bus
"'and physical damage and injuries to the plaintiff.'"
And according to the report, Michael is also suing the Barclays Center for allowing McGregor to enter what should have been a secured location,
also claiming that security failed to prevent or intervene in the incident.
So, I mean, as we mentioned around that incident, we knew this was going to happen, and now this is the first of what we're seeing.
But from that, I want to share some stuff I love today, and today in Awesome, brought to you by DraftKings and DKPhil.com.
Now, if you're not aware,
I've been a huge fan of fantasy football for years. I actually used DraftKings before they came on as a sponsor. DraftKings, if you don't know, is the fantastic place to play daily fantasy.
I personally mainly use it for fantasy football. Also, congratulations to everyone who did better
than me with last week's free contest since I lost, which I will say was kind of a shot to my
ego. But very awesomely, I've teamed up with DraftKings
again this week using DKPhil.com again.
And just for people in the nation, beautiful bastards,
there is a free $1,000 contest.
They literally made the contest just for us.
There's $1,000, first place gets 100.
All you gotta do to enter is sign up, it's free.
But very awesomely, if you use DKPhil.com,
you deposit your first $5, they give you a $20 bonus.
And then you could use those bonuses to enter more fantasy football contests and compete for much higher cash prizes.
So if you're interested, you want to check it out, you want to test it out, see the website for details.
Eligibility restrictions apply.
And the first bit of awesome is just a friendly reminder.
You have 12 to 14 hours left to be able to use code FACTS for 15% off the YB Informed or the Don't Be Stupid Stupid shirts.
Links to those down below.
Then, if you haven't seen, Eminem right here on YouTube
has been slowly releasing a full interview with him.
And in it, he talks about a lot of things,
including some of the fallout that has come from his album.
I thought I'd share it because it's really interesting
and it's just, it's also cool to see such a big person
utilize the platform.
Then we had Bon Appetit showing how to make
12 types of sushi with 11 different fish.
Granted, I'll never actually do it, but it's a fun watch.
Then we had Bebe Rexha breaking down some of her favorite Instagram accounts. We had LaKeith Stanfield breaking down his fashion looks.
We had Paul McCartney answering the web's most searched questions. We got the Honest Game trailer for NBA 2K19.
Then we got a bunch of awesome from yesterday's Nintendo Direct. We got a peek at Animal Crossing that'll get released in 2019.
Cities Skylines was released on the Switch if you were a fan of SimCity back in the day, it's great.
And there's a bunch of other stuff.
I'll link to it down below.
Then if you're looking for different kinds of funny
on Netflix, one, season five of BoJack Horseman
came out today, as well as two,
a comedian by the name of Daniel Sloss came out
with two Netflix specials on Netflix today.
I've only gotten through the first one so far,
but it is fantastic.
Obviously a lot of people have different ideas
about what is funny, but ooh, he is in my opinion, truly amazing. And if you wanna see the full one so far, but it is fantastic. Obviously a lot of people have different ideas about what is funny, but ooh,
he is in my opinion, truly amazing.
And if you want to see the full versions of everything
I just shared, the secret link of the day,
really anything at all,
links as always are in the description down below.
And then let's talk about some interesting news
out of Georgia, which I'm always fascinated by news
out of Georgia because Georgia feels like
three different places depending on where you live there.
You know, you have your Alpharetta's, downtown Atlanta.
I lived in a studio apartment in Buckhead for a while
that I definitely could not afford.
But today we're specifically looking at a part of Georgia
I have never heard of before called Hepzibah.
And the reason we're focusing there is there is a school
there that has made national news because of a consent form
they sent out to parents.
And their consent form wasn't for a field trip,
it was for permission to hit your child
with a wooden board.
The school, which is the Georgia School for Innovation and the Classics, which is a kindergarten through ninth grade charter school,
they bring back paddling as a form of discipline. According to the superintendent, when speaking with the media, around 100 parents sent the consent
form back with one-third approving. Superintendent Jody Bolano saying, in this school
we take discipline very seriously. There was a time where corporal punishment was kind of the norm in school
and you didn't have the problems that you have. Adding, it's just one more tool that we have in our disciplinary toolbox that we can use.
There's also a screenshot of the alleged form that was sent home to parents, although it has not been independently verified to be accurate.
The document says that there is a three strike policy. Upon that third strike, they may get paddled. The parents would be notified.
Apparently the student would be taken into an office and the door closed.
The student would then place their hands on their knees
Or piece of furniture and will be struck on the buttocks with a paddle and a paddle that it specifies would be made out of
Wood and should not exceed the 24 inch length 6 inch width and 3 quarter inch thickness
No more than three licks should be given now if you're wondering okay, how is this even legal?
It very much is legal and in fact, it's not only legal in Georgia
It turns out it's also legal in 19 other states
But of course as previously mentioned the parents can also opt out of this
Although according to reports the parents then must agree that the children can be suspended up to five days
That is a thing that is happening as far as my takeaway one
I know that people have different opinions when it comes to corporal punishment
My personal choice is I'm not going to hit my child
I was both spanked and hit as a kid
and all it did was make me hate that person.
I believe that I became a not so garbage person
in spite of it, not because of it.
But the idea of having someone at the school hit your kid
is so weird to me.
Because even just the idea
of someone putting hands on my child
makes me want to put my fist through their face.
With that said, that's a story, my opinion,
and I pass the question off to you.
What are your thoughts about this?
Do you think this is a good idea or no, it's horrendous?
Any and all thoughts, I'd love to know.
And then let's talk about why the NRA,
the National Rifle Association,
made national news this week for a non-gun-related topic.
And oddly enough, this happened in connection
to Thomas the Tank Engine.
So last Friday, the United Nations announced
that it was partnering with Mattel,
the toy company that owns the rights to the Thomas the Tank Engine franchise, as part, the United Nations announced that it was partnering with Mattel, the toy company that owns the rights
to the Thomas the Tank Engine franchise,
as part of a new initiative aimed at preschool audiences.
And according to the UN, the collaboration with Mattel
involved introducing children
to the UN's sustainable development goals.
And that includes things like quality education,
responsible consumption and production, and gender equality.
And in order to educate children about these topics,
those themes were being incorporated
into nine new episodes of Thomas and Friends the series.
And that's a show on Nick Jr. for preschoolers featuring Thomas and his train
friends. And specifically in regards to gender equality, there was a new character named Nia
that was being added to the show, who was a female steam engine from Kenya. And for some reason,
this decision and these moves caught the attention of the National Rifle Association. And so on the
September 7th episode of a show called Relentless on NRA TV, NRA spokesperson Dana Lesh says. Thomas the Tank is now bringing gender balance to the show by adding girl trains.
Seriously, one of those trains, Nia,
will be from Kenya to add ethnic diversity to the show.
And which that, by the way, that's where it gets really strange to me,
because I've looked at Thomas and Friends at their pictures and I see gray and blue.
Am I to understand this entire time that Thomas and
his trains were white, cuz they all have gray faces. How do you bring ethnic
diversity? I mean, they had to paint what I guess they thought was some sort of African pattern on
the side of Nia's engine. I mean, how do you bring ethnic diversity to a show that literally has no
ethnicities? Because they're trains. They don't even have skin pigmentation.
Was there some concern that the show had racist undertones? Because, I mean, Sir Topham Hatt
clearly is white, but the trains? I mean, I'm looking at this picture and I'm really,
really struggling to understand how in the world there isn't any diversity. It's truck month at GMC.

In any of this, oh, was it because I see it, it was the white hoods and the burning train
tracks. Okay, fine, fair point, fair, I get it.
Seemingly to try and make a point, I guess someone at NRA TV photoshopped white KKK hoods
on Thomas and his friends. And seemingly burning tracks in reference to burning large crosses.
A thing that the KKK would place on the lawns
of black people in order to intimidate and scare them.
Interestingly enough, although maybe not the most surprising
because they don't have crazy viewer numbers,
the segment didn't get a ton of coverage initially,
but then it started making its rounds
and then more and more people saw it and it blew up.
Even getting to the point where Mattel had to issue
a statement to the New York Times,
writing, we are not associated with images
that promote hate and denounce any images of our brands
"'that are being used to convey a message
"'not in line with the values of the company.'"
Also, as far as reactions from everyday people,
there were some people that supported the organization,
but in general, we saw widespread condemnation,
and also people just generally confused.
Judd Apatow writing,
"'Such a hateful nightmare they are.
"'We are all so exhausted by dumb, vicious people.'"
One journalist tweeting,
"'What does this have to do with rifles?' Another asking, are we gonna talk about how Dana Lasagna and the NRA attacked Thomas the Tank Engine, a
show for toddlers for promoting acceptance and diversity? Another writing, NRA TV depicts attack Thomas and Friends kids show over promoting diversity because you know,
gun rights. As far as my personal reaction to this, I am just perplexed.
I just don't know what to do with this kind
and this amount of stupid.
Like it's not even infuriating,
it's just a weird, like who thought
that this was a good idea?
It feels like they are doing what many people accuse
SJWs of, of making something out of nothing.
Also, I quickly looked into it and what I imagine
was 1 20th of the time it took to Photoshop
KKK hoods on Thomas, it turns out the inclusion of trains from different locations is pretty standard.
In a previous film featuring Thomas characters, they had Carlos from Mexico,
Yong Bao from China, Rajiv from India.
So they've never had a train from Kenya on the show before. Who does this hurt?
How does exposing children to different people, or I guess personalities with different backgrounds, a bad thing?
And two, they've had female characters on the show for years years so I don't even know where she's getting that from.
And it's just a weird, sad, pathetic swing from them
and I really think that it showcases
that what they're trying to do here
is really stoke the fire of a culture war.
That's where I'm gonna end it,
because like I said, I don't know what to do with this stupid.
Then we had an update around the horrible situation
with Botham John in Dallas, Texas.
If you didn't see that story,
Botham is a man who lived in Texas
who was shot and killed in his own home by a police officer, specifically Officer Amber Geiger, who reportedly said she thought she was walking into her own home, turned out she was on the wrong floor, and she shot and killed this man.
And there was outrage and controversy with this situation, many saying that Geiger was given special treatment because she wasn't arrested for several days.
And one of the updates we got with this story yesterday is that reportedly they searched his apartment and they found marijuana. And
following this being reported, there were a lot of people that lashed out at Fox 4 saying,
okay and? The top tweet in response to this article saying, wow, that totally justifies
stumbling into the wrong house and shooting him dead for absolutely no fucking reason. Thank God
the police protected us from this man who used a harmless drug recreationally in the safety of his
own home. And we also saw Lee Merrittet, the attorney for John's family, saying,
I think it's unfortunate that law enforcement begins to immediately criminalize the victim. In this case, someone who was clearly the victim that has absolutely
no bearing on the fact that he was shot in his home. Adding, I would love to see more information coming out about the warrants executed
on the home of the shooter who lived just below him.
I haven't seen any of those. And particularly for it to be on this day, the day that we remember and celebrate him.
To see the common assassination attempt on the victim that we often see in law enforcement involved shootings.
And actually on the note of the shooter, Amber Geiger, there has been some criticism regarding her accounts of events.
And this is because according to a search warrant obtained by Dallas police, it says,
an unknown male inside the apartment confronted the officer at the door.
But then there's another affidavit obtained by the Texas Rangers to arrest Geiger three days after the shooting, saying John was, quote, across the room when the officer walked
through the door. But regarding those accounts, reportedly, according to Dallas News, one of the
law enforcement officials said Geiger has always said she was confronted while she was in the
doorway, but John was not. And continuing, the same official said John was 12 to 15 feet away
from the door when first responders arrived. Also, another thing in relation to this story I feel is
important to mention, Lee Merritt, who is the attorney for John's family,
he has said two independent witnesses came forward
and said that they heard knocking the night of the shooting.
Merritt saying one of the witnesses saying
they heard a woman's voice say,
let me in, let me in, and then they heard gunshots.
But on the other side of this,
you had a law enforcement official speaking with Dallas News
saying the police spoke with one of those witnesses
and they did not give that account to police.
But adding, law enforcement is looking into those accounts.
One of the last things that has been mentioned
with this story is according to reports,
there had been noise complaints against John.
And you had Lee Merritt telling CNN
that the complaints came from quote,
"'Immediate downstairs neighbors.'"
But he also did not say specifically
if it was Geiger who complained.
But still Merritt and the law enforcement official
that was speaking with Dallas News did say
that there was a noise complaint on the day of the shooting.
So there are a lot of questions regarding the case itself
and as far as the marijuana found in his apartment
and this being a breaking news event,
it's ridiculous and sad and disgusting.
That does not change any key part to this story
and the main key part is that someone walked
into someone else's home and then shot them dead.
But yeah, we're gonna be paying attention but that's where I'm gonna leave this be paying attention, but that's where I'm going to leave this story for now.
And that's where I'm going to end today's show.
But of course, remember, I want all of these to also be a conversation.
So whether it be the last story, the first one, anything in between, let me know what you're thinking in those comments down below.
