Sup you beautiful bastards, hope you're having a fantastic Wednesday.
Welcome to the Philip DeFranco Show and let's just get right into it.
Oh wow.
I have to laugh at the end.
I'm in the whitest version of me.
Another Wednesday, another new PDS host that I have to fire. She wasn't even open to growing
another 12 inches to match my frame. Amateur. But even though I just fired Liza Koshy,
if you'd like to listen to our podcast, which I actually just uploaded before uploading this video,
one, you can either listen to it the classic way
on iTunes or wherever the hell else, link down below,
or two, you can listen to it and watch her dumb faces
on the brand new YouTube channel,
youtube.com slash convo with.
I really loved having her in and having this conversation.
I knew we were gonna have a fun time,
but it was really interesting and educational
to kind of get a peek behind the curtain
of someone that's so just such a big personality,
so positive on camera and has been just doing a lot
very openly.
Yeah, after today's show,
I definitely recommend you check it out.
It'll be a top link in that description.
But with that said, buckle up, hit that like button
and let's just jump into it.
And the first thing we're gonna talk about today
is Edward Buck being back in the news.
And his name might be familiar to you.
One, he is a prominent democratic donor,
but also two, back in January, we talked about him.
And that was because two men had been found dead
in his apartment 18 months apart.
And notably, both of those men,
both January of this year and July of 2017,
both of those men reportedly died
of a methamphetamine overdose.
Regarding the 2017 death,
reportedly the admissible evidence at that time
was insufficient to prove beyond a reasonable doubt
that Buck was responsible for the man's death.
Then this year, the mother of the young man who died
filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
And reportedly that lawsuit accused him of wrongful death,
sexual battery and assault.
And reportedly the complaint describes Buck
as a wealthy white man who quote,
"'had a predatory and injurious system
of soliciting black men and watching them cling to life.'"
Then that death in January of this year was Timothy Dean.
He was a 55 year old man.
Reportedly he and Buck had been friends
for a very long time.
There, Dean's death was ruled accidental
by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
But obviously now that we're talking about this story today,
you know that is not where the story ends
because it is now being reported that Ed Buck
is being charged among other things
with running a drug den.
This because reportedly just last week,
another 37 year old man had an overdose,
although this time it was non-fatal.
But yeah, Buck has been arrested at this this time, he's currently facing felony counts
of battery causing serious injury,
administering methamphetamine,
and maintaining a drug house.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's
Office, if convicted, he could face a maximum sentence
of five years and eight months in state prison.
And while Ed Buck's lawyer in the past has said things like,
"'Yes, Ed does have individuals he associates with
"'who have problems with drugs.
"'He tries to talk them out of it.
Sometimes they bring their problems into his apartment
and that's where the problem is.
In this most recent event, according to court documents,
prosecutors say that this latest overdose victim
went to Buck's apartment on September 4th,
where Buck personally and deliberately administered
a large dose of methamphetamine.
Concerned he was suffering an overdose,
the man left the apartment to get medical help.
Then adding, he returned to Buck's apartment
on September 11th, when Buck again injected him
with two dangerously large doses of methamphetamine.
Prosecutors then go on to say
that Buck thwarted the man's attempt to get help,
but the man eventually fled the apartment
and called 911 from a gas station,
where he was eventually taken to a hospital for treatment.
Also of note here, Sheriff's investigators say
they found hundreds of photographs in Buck's home
of men in compromising positions,
which appears to go along with prosecutors saying
that Buck
is a violent sexual predator who preys on men
struggling with addiction and homelessness.
From his home in a position of power,
Buck manipulates his victims into participating
in his sexual fetishes.
And adding, these fetishes include supplying
and personally administering dangerously large doses
of narcotics to his victims.
And so ultimately, that's where we are right now.
And I guess the kind of thought in my head right now is,
how the hell has it taken this long?
I mean, even when we were covering this back in January,
it was baffling, right?
Maybe you have one victim, okay, there's some smoke here.
Second victim within 18 months, it seems like a fire.
Then just months later, we're talking about a third victim.
All of a sudden we're hearing things like hundreds of photos
and you're wondering how many victims are there?
But yeah, that's where this one ends.
One, it's gonna be interesting to see what happens
related to these charges, but also two,
if we see anything else come from this.
Right, are there more stories, more victims, right?
Because for me personally, it feels like
there's a very big blank to be filled in here.
But yeah, to completely shift tone from that news,
let's kind of knock out two quickie pieces of news today.
First up, you had Olivia Jade in the news,
who some know as just kind of a massive online influencer.
Others, especially after all the news
of the college admissions cheating scandal,
nor is the daughter of Full House actress,
Lori Loughlin, Aunt Becky.
Now notably, out of all the people accused,
Loughlin did not plead guilty.
She didn't take a plea deal.
Which actually regarding that,
we are seeing the punishments come through.
Felicity Huffman, for example,
just received a 14 day prison sentence.
But pulling back to Olivia Jade,
the reason she's in the news
is because according to reports,
Lori Loughlin's daughter deletes controversial photo
after report lawyers, quote,
"'begged her to stay off social media.'"
As far as the photo in question,
if you do not remember it,
it showed Olivia Jade flipping off the camera
with the caption having the handles of several outlets,
as well as at every other media outlet.
Hashtag close, hashtag source, hashtag says.
And here's the thing, I imagine if you're as big of a figure
as her in such a high profile case,
there's gotta be a lot of frustrations.
You know, there needs to be an understanding
that wildly flailing or lashing out,
especially while your parent is charged,
in a situation where we are now seeing other parents
getting jail time, it's not helpful,
especially when you're one of the people
that allegedly got into this school because of what happened.
But also, maybe I'm wrong.
Maybe the judge will take into account how many likes
and how much support you got from other blue check marks into consideration.
Then in quickie streaming wars news,
there are reports that are a little all over the place
regarding this deal.
But you have places like Cord Cutter News
saying for billions of dollars,
but also places like Variety citing industry sources
saying that for $600 million,
Warner Media has gained the exclusive rights
to the 12 seasons of Big Bang Theory for TBS
and notably HBO Max.
Right, and this is a standout moment because one,
it shows that the streaming wars are heating up,
but I think also too,
while it shows us that all these services, right,
one of some of the biggest polls are,
hey, look at our new original content.
Some of the biggest potential polls for the platform
are older bingeable shows, right?
I mean, as Variety pointed out in their report,
this news is coming right after earlier this week,
Netflix committed an estimated $500 million
for the Seinfeld archive.
You had HBO Max committing about $425 million
to reclaim the streaming rights to Friends from Netflix.
NBC Universal has a whole new service
that we haven't even talked about before called Peacock.
And they've reportedly committed $500 million
to relocate the office from Netflix starting in 2021.
So I guess kind of with this story, I wanted to ask you,
one, regarding all of these different places
getting these big exclusives, what are your thoughts in general? There's been
this big debate that with all these different streaming services already out there launching,
everyone's getting exclusives, things are kind of thinning out. By having to get multiple services,
things are getting back to the cable package prices or that it's just going to lead to more
piracy. But then also too, and this is probably more directed towards fans of these shows,
do you actually find yourself kind of watching through them?
And also if so, why?
I don't think I personally know anyone
that watches Big Bang Theory,
but I definitely have a number of friends
that they just go back, even though they've seen everything,
they binge watch Friends and Seinfeld.
And I truly hope this part doesn't come off as dismissive
because it's not, but why?
Why do you think you go back to that
rather than actively like seeking out new content?
Then let's talk about a story
that won't be polarizing in any way, Israel.
And specifically, we're gonna be talking
about the recent election in Israel,
which I mean, we've talked about the Israeli elections
a few times over the last few months,
but if you haven't seen that previous coverage,
here's a very quick TLDR.
Back in April, Bibi Netanyahu's Likud party
beat the opposition Blue and White party
and its leader, Benny Gantz, by a fraction of a percent.
And in fact, that election was so close
that both parties ended up both getting 35
out of the 120 seats in Israel's parliament.
And so because neither party won an outright majority,
they had to form coalitions with smaller parties
until they could get a majority or 61 seats.
Now normally, whichever party wins the most seats
gets the first chance to form a coalition government,
but due to the tie, it came down to whoever had
the best chance to build a majority.
And because a group of right-wing parties
were expected to back Netanyahu
had won a larger block of seats,
Gantz conceded the election. So Netanyahu was given a max of 42 days to form a majority, and because a group of right-wing parties were expected to back Netanyahu had won a larger block of seats, Gantz conceded the election.
So Netanyahu was given a max of 42 days to form a majority,
and those 42 days came and went,
and Netanyahu was only able to get a coalition of 60 seats,
so he was a seat short, meaning one,
he didn't have enough seats to become prime minister,
and two, it marked the first time in Israel's history
that a prime minister-elect couldn't form a government
after an election.
And so what followed was Netanyahu proposed a bill
to dissolve parliament, and parliament voted to dissolve itself, triggering new elections that would be held in September. And so what followed was Netanyahu proposed a bill to dissolve parliament and parliament voted
to dissolve itself, triggering new elections
that would be held in September.
And for those who have not looked at a calendar
for 18, 19 days, it's September.
And that highly anticipated election,
the second in five months, it happened yesterday.
And with the results still rolling in
and about 95% of the vote counted,
right now it's looking like Gantz's blue and white party
is just eking out a one seat lead over Netanyahu.
Gantz currently holding 33, Netanyahu 32.
And so once again, we're not seeing an outright majority,
but we are seeing a number difference.
And so as far as what happens from here,
there are two main options.
The first option is for the Likud
and the blue and white parties
to form what's called a national unity government.
Under that system, the two parties would come up
with a power sharing agreement
and pool their seats to form a majority.
Although there is a big catch here,
Gantz has said that he will not form a unity government
with Netanyahu as the leader of the League,
who since he is facing indictment.
As we've talked about in previous shows,
as well as, I mean, we have a whole deep dive,
Netanyahu is currently facing charges of bribery, fraud,
and a breach of trust that stem from
three different corruption cases.
He has though denied the charges
and is set to have a pretrial hearing
starting on October 2nd, so just in two weeks.
This of course, after he was granted a request
to push an earlier scheduled hearing back.
And so as a result of that stance,
Netanyahu is unlikely to agree to a unity government
where he is not the leader.
Especially because many people believe
that in that position, he would try to get parliament
to pass a last minute immunity deal for himself.
Which is something that many experts say
could be his only shot at avoiding possible indictment.
So there's that.
Then the second option is for Netanyahu and Gantz
to try to piece together coalitions
with smaller parties to form a majority.
Right, and so for that to happen,
we have to look at the blocks.
Right, the alliances that parties form based on their political
and ideological opinions.
And there are two main blocks in Israel's parliament.
You have the center left block,
which includes the blue and white party,
and the right wing block, which includes the Likud.
And once again, this situation gives us a big question mark
because according to the current unofficial election results,
both Gantz's center left block and Netanyahu's right wing
block are expected to get 56 seats.
And of course, keep in mind that these are not the final official results,
and so things are subject to change,
but regardless, based on what we're seeing,
it appears that neither bloc is enough
for an outright majority.
Okay, so then you do a little bit of math,
and then you say, okay, well, what about the other eight seats?
Well, all of those are expected to go to just one party,
Israel, our home, a secular, ultra-nationalist party
led by Avigdor Lieberman.
Now, the party's political leanings
would normally place them in the right-wing bloc,
and in fact, Lieberman even served in Bibi's cabinet in the past. But Lieberman has Now the party's political leanings would normally place them in the right wing block. And in fact, Lieberman even served
in Bibi's cabinet in the past.
But Lieberman has actually been at odds with Netanyahu
and is unlikely to throw his weight behind him.
As you might remember from the last time we covered this,
Lieberman was refusing to form a coalition with Netanyahu
after he won the election back in April,
unless Netanyahu would support a bill
that would require ultra-Orthodox men
to participate in Israel's mandatory military conscription.
But if Netanyahu did that, right,
he supported that bill,
he would then lose the support of the ultra-Orthodox,
which held 16 seats that he needed.
And so all of that, of course,
resulted in Netanyahu dissolving the government
and holding new elections.
And so once again, the power to decide
the next prime minister is in Lieberman's hand,
which is actually also why the Israeli media
often refers to him as the kingmaker.
And as far as what Lieberman wants, for his part,
he has said that he wants a unity government
between his party, the Blue and White Party, and the Likud.
But once again, Netanyahu remains adamantly opposed to a unity government between his party, the Blue and White Party, and the Likud. But once again, Netanyahu remains adamantly opposed
to a unity government.
In fact, speaking in an announcement
after meeting with members of the right-wing bloc, he said,
"'We decided unanimously that we're going forward together
"'to negotiations that will establish a government
"'led by me,' and then adding,
"'Now there are only two possibilities,
"'a government led by me, or a dangerous government
"'that depends on the Arabs.
"'Now more than ever, with the vast security challenges
"'that lie ahead for the country,
a government must not be established
that depends on anti-Zionist Arab parties.
That's our commitment to the country and to our voters."
Which once again, that coming from him is not surprising.
The stakes for him have never been higher.
I mean, you can see that desire,
and if you want to call it desperation,
reflected in the efforts of he and his party.
Last week, he announced that he would annex
part of the West Bank if reelected.
After that statement, Israel's central election committee
fined the Likud $8,500 for illegal propaganda.
Last Thursday, it was reported that Netanyahu's
Facebook page's chatbot was shut down
for violating hate speech rule.
This after sending a message that said,
"'Israel's Arab politicians want to destroy us all.'"
That Facebook account though was later brought back,
but then this Tuesday, his Facebook page's chatbot
was suspended after it violated regulations
that prohibit publishing of voter surveys on election day.
Also, reportedly the day before the election, Netanyahu gave two radio interviews, breaking the law that bars candidates from promoting themselves after 7 p.m. on election night eve.
Also, there were allegations that the leakhood persuaded an Israeli television station to report that surveillance cameras were being installed at, quote, dozens of polling places in Arab areas, which some experts have described as part of an effort to suppress Arab turnout.
Though, we should note there, if that was the desire,
it did not work.
And I say that because reportedly the turnout
from Israel's Arab population,
which comprises of just 20% of the whole country,
was much higher in this election than the last election.
But ultimately, that's where we are right now.
And once the final votes are in,
Israel's president will choose the candidate he thinks
will have a best chance of forming a majority government.
And I mean, we'll have to see what happens,
but it's incredibly unlikely that Gantz
can get Lieberman on his side.
And you know, technically Lieberman's party
is ideologically right wing.
So will they just go with Netanyahu
even though they can't get their way on one thing?
Or if we end up in another stalemate,
there is also the third option,
which I didn't mention previously.
There is also a possibility
of a third election early next year.
Yeah, ultimately that's where we are.
And of course I love to know everyone's thoughts on this,
but also specifically if you live there
or you have family there,
I'd love to know your thoughts about what's happening.
And that is where I'm going to end today's show.
Of course, as I always overemphasize,
I'd love to hear from you.
