I remember having my 14th birthday at a place called the flamingo club and it we we hired it out and it was proper sticky floor and we were only 14 so I think we were like had I don't know maybe we had an odd Bacardi Breezer but I remember playing Mambo number five on repeat on repeat I don't know how we would play the music out loud anyway has everyone dropped off listening Louis Vega are you there um did with your friends did you say and we got and you went around your friends in my life a little bit of Tina yeah if you listen to the lyrics now, it's absolutely horrendous. Okay, so where were you growing up when you were 14 and what was on your bedroom walls? Okay, so I grew up in St Ives in Cornwall. Lovely. Yeah, yeah. Very, very gorgeous. And on my walls, I had Hanson. Yeah, Taylor, Zach and Isaac loved them I had Bewitched I had Spice Girls and I had a Friends poster all classic was it the Friends poster where they've all got their heads yes yes they're having a one uh Rachel and Ross sharing a milkshake. Oh, that's a classic poster.

Who did you fancy in Hanson? Taylor. Which one's Taylor? The only one that's fanciful in my mind. Is it the middle one? That was about three years old. Yeah, the middle one. Okay, the middle one.

so okay so leonardo's also been rejected that's sad for him okay what kind of music are you into is it just pop quite fussy uh let me think so spiceice Girls like I thought I was the biggest Spice Girls fan ever Oasis I was listening to Oasis on cassette I remember that um and the beach I used to love the beach boys and I loved musical theatre so I was just listening to all the musicals so was I me and my sister were talking about this the other day like I was a real loser I'd be like doing like a what I was a real loser. I'd be, like, doing, like, a walk. My friends would come round and I'd be, like, singing Tell Me on a Sunday. And I'd be, like, doing a bit of Jesus Christ Superstar.

What the hell must they have thought? I made my best friend, Katie, come round to my house, sit down, and I'd put on, like, music of the night and dance for her. Good. Like like what the hell what the hell poor Katie anyway thank you Katie she probably will listen to this but you know what um actually if you're still friends with Katie I'm still friends with the two people that I used to dance Melissa and Rachel so maybe it was a winning recipe for making friends yeah I think so and I would still do that to Katie as well if there's if there's a really big musical theatre salon I will still

put it on and dance for her because it's just funny my sister and I um always sing I know him so well we have got that down like an absolute back to back oh Oh my God, we're going for it. Oh wow, you've done a routine. Oh God, yeah. Barbara, she goes, does she go first? I think she goes first and then I go. And we've got the harmonies. I mean, I do that with my sister, but my sister can't sing, so. Well, I'm not saying we can sing to be fair I didn't say I didn't say it was good I said we did it okay so what kind of school did you go to and where were you in the hierarchy oh I went to a um public school state school um uh state school the same as public school isn't it i don't know did i say public school and it just sounded really i went to a state school because i think a public school boy is just for the public no i don't think it is i think a public school boys okay

a private school which is weird because why would it end up the call the private school i was gonna say don't edit that out emma because I'm sure lots of people would make the same mistake, or maybe they wouldn't. And now no one's going to be interested in anything I have to say. I feel like a public school boy. I feel like I'd say it like that. I don't know, man. I went to state school.

Okay. State school. All right, Dick Van Dyke, you went to a state school. All right. Yeah, in Cornwall. And, yeah, it was lovely. think in the heart the did you say what did you say was the second like in the hierarchy like were you like cool were you nerdy where did you kind of like I was not cool I was not cool um I had my little group of friends

we were kind of like the drama group right okay yeah so we had our own little thing but I was desperate there was a group called that the really cool girls were called the munch bunch and they all got their boobs early and they all had really beautiful hair and they would wear really good shoes I remember thinking their shoes were good I'd get all my shoes from like you know they would be called like Knox or like Abbey Bass or you know like I'm not like like I and I remember they always had really good shoes anyway I was desperate to be in the munch bunch and I remember once it's so like mean girls they weren't mean they were just I don't know beautiful and cool but one of them said hi to me once in the corridor and it made my day yeah I was like oh my god she she said she said hi she said hi and then one of them came

and watched one of the shows we did and she came the next day she was like Carly you can come sit with us if you want and I was like oh my god it's literally like Mean Girls it literally is Mean Girls yeah but I didn't go and sit with them because they didn't ask Katie and I wanted to stay with Katie. Oh, my God, you are. Oh, this needs to be made into a Netflix film. That's what I think. You can play yourself.

I should be playing me. Yeah, you will play you. Katie can play Katie and I'll be a teacher in the background. This is a lovely story. What are they called, the Munch Buns after the yoghurt? I don't know. I don't know who gave them that name. I think the boys gave them the nicknames because all the boys fancied them.

My first snog was so bad yeah it was just really horrible yeah it was I won't say the name no because they'll all be listening it's millions of listeners yeah well yeah well just yeah just in case because if I'd said it was really good I'd say the name but they weren't it was so do you know what he said to me he took his his he took my face in in his hands and he went and he went I'm gonna kiss you like they do on neighbors and then he went

and I was just like I literally my mouth just must have been like oh it's so disgusting it was absolutely repulsive i wouldn't just was he thinking harold were you madge i was probably madge how awful is the name madge. Is it? What's it short for? Margaret. Yeah, because you call Madonna Madge. I wouldn't call a Madge to her face, Madonna. I don't think she'd like that. I wouldn't call her Madge.

God, I literally, because we grew up in in st ives we were very surfy so we were wearing a lot of like i remember i had a big t-shirt that said fat willies surf shack and when you said surfy i

thought fat willies that's that literally surf shack and then i had this um hoodie jumper that was like a billabong jumper that I was obsessed with basically I used to wear I remember flares came in didn't they were we 14 when flares were back I think it was flares clogs and a big like fleecy jumper and then my hair like scraped back because it was really fuzzy so I used to just try and scrape it back as as severely as I possibly could with all my acne just out on my forehead just out and proud yeah fat willies is a classic when I used to when I went on a girls holiday to Nuki when I was 18 I kind of would have gone into that do you know you've been I presume you've been to Nuki oh yeah infamous sailors sailors arms yes where I famously

had a boy stop me go oh my god you look like someone famous and I went yeah and he went yeah Sharon from EastEnders and that kind of ruined the rest of my heart you look like someone famous and he's like yeah Sharon from EastEnders and I was like yeah okay thank you livid

there's nothing wrong with Letitia Dean but you don't want to be compared to Letitia Dean when you're a teenager you do not want to be compared to Letitia Dean when you're a teenager. She's got great legs. I will say that, Letitia. I'd love a set of pins like that. So is there anything you would have wore then that you would wear now? I've still got my Fat Willie surf stuff. Yeah yeah I wear it to bed to be fair but uh what did I wear then yeah I'd wear some flares I probably would wear quite a bit of stuff yeah why not I think nowadays you can wear anything can't you really it's different it's not no, you have to wear, no one's wearing that, that's not cool. It's like anyone just wears anything they fancy.

Yeah, it's very relaxed because I've got teenagers and my daughter's 13. It's a very comfy look they're all going for. They're going for the big hoodies. Lounge wear. Yeah, lounge wear. Big hoodies, leggings, youwear big hoodies leggings you know um like trainer very comfy cozy in any scenario if I was going oh I'm going to a wedding this afternoon what you wearing leggings and a hoodie it's just what they all wear

and a slip how how like refreshing though like to not feel the pressure to wear anything other than that god I would have loved that growing up yeah just leggings in a hoodie with a slip back bun and a bit of clear mascara and she's like right i'm ready for the wedding mom lovely i was like trying to shoehorn myself into like jeez oh my god yeah i was in like i was in jane norman dresses oh are you the first person that's mentioned jane Jane Norman on the podcast? You might be. Maybe. Jane Norman.

that's weird i'm not a bloody dj but he would have had but listen i walk around carrying my headphones so do you walk around carrying your headphones, I don't understand how else I'm going to carry them, Emma. Yeah, because, again, I don't know what i'm supposed

to do with them what with these with the big things no the little ones i'm fine no i just got these because the little ones i think my ears are too small my ear holes are very small fun fact small holes noted um so yeah i can't have i don't like an airpod either i like an old-fashioned you like the security of a wire i do and sometimes i think it makes me look a bit kooky when i'm walking in the streets oh look at her she's she's not down with modern trends she's still wearing little headphones yeah they've done um okay so fashion we've covered fashion um what was your greatest ever teenage success oh god my greatest it can be something daft it could be like i've got to be in drama or whatever it could be anything oh no i'll tell you what it was I um won the surfing competition um but it was like a local one

on Porthmere Beach and I won it and I was so proud of myself did you get in the local paper oh yeah Times and Echo I was in the Times and Echo yeah with a little picture of me in a web in a website in a website in a website picture of me on a website it's a whole different thing you've won a picture of you in a wetsuit oh yeah with my medal and my little goodie bag I was so pleased yeah I got some serious points with the boys for winning that as well oh it could never happen in Birmingham because we just have canals I was not I wasn't really surfing. Can you still surf now?

oh my god so many things, I think that age is so vulnerable like I think I was so desperately in love with this boy who just treated me so badly actually he was like one of my best friends but I was just so in love with him but he he kept kind of going out with all my friends never me and it was just so in love with him but he he kept kind of going out with all my friends never me and it was just so mortifying every time it was so embarrassing unrequited love is an absolute rite of passage the pain I still remember that like it hurt it hurt so badly um what else so that was always embarrassing um what else was embarrassing I was really

embarrassed with my skin I had really bad acne on my forehead um I was always really embarrassed with that so I was trying to kind of cover it up with like you know when you get the two bits like yeah because I couldn't have a fringe because my hair's naturally curly and that was just a disaster no wouldn't look good it's wild now how the kids, like, if they've got spots, they'll, like, put little stars on them and they'll just go out with, like, it's cute, isn't it? I like it. I just love that. I love that. I'm so excited because I've got two girls and I'm like, oh, thank God.

Like, when you get acne, we can just stick stars on. Just make the solar system on your face. Yeah, in our house, we've got Hello Kitty ones. We've got stars. we've got hello kitty ones we've got stars we've got hearts and she'll often just pop off to the you know i'm going to cost her or wherever she's going and they've got little stickers on i think it's really cute we just didn't we yeah we didn't and of course they do like skincare we didn't we had soap oh my god very best i don't even think i know I think clearacil maybe was just a coming out I think I had clearacil like a or neutrogena neutrogena clearacil um apricot scrub because it was Sarah Michelle Gellar I remember she was on the adverts for neutrogena going like that

I was if she used she never used that absolutely I absolutely never did. But Carla thought she did. And so she ran down to Boots with her pop it money. Pop it. Pocket. And got some. Yeah. There was apricot scrubs. There was.

Yes. Apes and Ives apricot scrubs. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know if that still exists because it can't be healthy for your skin. Just rubbing like seeds. I don't know. It's just.

Was it apricot seeds? And it would just leave because i used to obviously do my skincare in the bath yeah obviously yeah yeah so then when you get out my mom would be like so just be like loads of little bits of shit all over the bottom of the bath a little bit of grit in there um yeah the skincare now is is much better um my daughter just a bit has has has a whole like skincare thing skincare thing down um unrequited glove i think is a rite of passage and um is truly horrific and we've all we've all been through it i wonder if boys get boys must go through it as well oh yeah boys have had yeah I know that

my husband's definitely had a girl that he was so in love with and I think he made her something and she just didn't even know he existed I remember when he told me that I was like oh but let me see a picture of her is she beautiful beautiful now? Yeah, I'm going to find her on Facebook and really assess the situation. We had Giles on the podcast who, did he paint a picture? He did some, I think there was some sort of portrait that he posted to a girl's house with no response. Oh, no. I know. Oh, it's very love actually, isn't it?

I think what is incredibly wholesome about having a teenager and like a tween is I think the relationship as a mother with a child is a bit deeper because they can contact you on whatsapp they can send you a gif they can send you a funny video they say you know also does it remind well there's I couldn't really have that communication with my mum she was like at work I might have like phoned up at work but that's really cute and like sitting down watching a box set together I probably wouldn't have done that with my mom you kind of like there weren't much so yeah I like that that's nice so like me and um me and my daughter have watched like Gilmore Girls together and me and my son watched like YouTube videos so that's that is really nice and they are still they are still

kind of wholesome the kids it's not oh good good. They don't play outside. That's one thing. There's no... There's no 40-40 in the streets. There's no, there's nothing like that. There's just because we're scared that they're going to be stolen. But our parents didn't seem too scared. My mum and dad literally left the door open and just let us play in the street until the lamps went on until the street lamps

went on and then we had to come home and bear in mind in summer that was like 10 o'clock at night and we were just out knocking about with our mates yeah they're just sat at the table having a nice romantic dinner it must have been so easy it must have been so much easier. Jeez, like the ease. Yeah. Yeah, I wouldn't do that. I'd be like, I'm life 360, because that's what, you'll get that when they're teenagers, and you just stalk where they're going. Yeah.
