Starting point is 00:00:00 My big problem with all these things is there's always going to be extreme examples where this is a great thing. Like I said, if that Waymo stopped a school shooting, amazing. The Waymo would be the hero. Amazing. But are we going to like, that's the 0.01% of life and the other 99.9% is now going to be surveilled and I just don't like that. What's going on guys? Today we've got a great conversation with Kevin Clancy, better known as KFC from Barstool. In this conversation, we are going to go deep into what the heck is going on with all this new technology and how it is going to impact your lives.
Starting point is 00:00:31 And we get super weird. We talk about Waymo and how it may have helped get some kids arrested. We also talk about flock cameras, ring cameras, and how everywhere we see cameras infiltrating our lives and what the impact is. And then we get into some of the really weird technology that is starting to be used on a daily basis.
Starting point is 00:00:47 I think you will find it fascinating that both he and I have very unique thoughts on how this technology, what's good about it, what's bad about it, and how it is going to possibly negatively affect you. All that and much more in this conversation with KFC. All right, KFC, you are here to help me understand one thing, which is the everyman experience with technology is about to get very fucking weird. It's about one of the only things I can help explain to people is the everyman experience, because that's just what I am.
Starting point is 00:01:10 That's just what you are. All right, let's talk first about Waymo. So everyone's really excited about self-driving cars, but there's a story recently that there's two 15-year-old boys out in California. They were driving around in the Waymo, or being driven in the Waymo, and they had like a paintball gun, essentially, and they were drinking. So underage drinking, and they were shooting people out of the windows. Drinking in guns. America, baby. I don't see what. So where is the problem?
Starting point is 00:01:33 What's the story? They didn't see a problem, obviously. Long story short is that Waymo allegedly only realized this because it was unique experiences through their cameras inside the vehicle. They realized that these kids were shooting the paintballs out of the car. They called the police. They disabled the vehicle. They tricked the kids and told them they were having some car trouble.
Starting point is 00:01:54 Just stay in the car. And then the cops show up and get them in trouble. I think they got arrested or whatever. Yeah. Self-driving cars sound awesome. Getting essentially kidnapped by the car. By Waymo. Even if they're waiting for the cops.
Starting point is 00:02:06 That sounds like this is going to get really weird. Yeah. I'm not one of the, I'm not one of these like doomsday conspiracy guys when it comes to technology more often than not. Just being in the space I'm in, like I find technological advances to be a good thing. And then the tinfoil hat people start to go crazy.
Starting point is 00:02:23 And a lot of times I'm like, all right, relax. But when you start to see like, oh i i'm starting to see how this could be an issue like you know in a case like this like if that was a real gun probably be a good thing right we'd be saying like wow waymo stopped uh these kids from i stopped an active shooter right right and it's not it's like i understand where the confusion could have happened in this specific instance but you know the old slippery slope sort of thing like where do you draw the line if you are somebody is you know on the phone like screaming at someone in the back of a waymo can they decide that that person is dangerous or i
Starting point is 00:02:54 I don't know, you have some drugs on you or whatever. What's supposed to be in a private moment. If Waymo is just watching and probably watching, like, who can we call the cops on? You know, is it weirder that they have cameras that they're watching? Because they claim that they don't watch the cameras all the time, which I find that very hard to believe. But that's what they claim. Right. Is that the weirder part?
Starting point is 00:03:11 Or is it weirder that they, like, disabled the car and, like, were able to essentially keep the kids there? Well, I feel like you can't, like, really have one without the other. It's like they both feed each other. it's i if the waymo like locked you in the car that would be crazy i mean it sounds like they kind of just tricked two dumb kids into thinking there was car trouble but maybe they did lock them and they just don't want to say it yeah like we don't know fucking nuts so like would that change your view of this and you'd be like all right that was too far if they locked them in the car because all right so like i have a gun on me in this car and the real gun yeah who knows
Starting point is 00:03:43 We don't know. Right. But I don't know what if it was because I it was a self-defense. I'm going to save my kids who are and I have my gun and you lock me in the car. And I like, you know what I mean? Like in California, that's still illegal. Like all of these are obviously extreme scenarios, but yeah. But also two 15 year old kids drinking and shooting paintball guns is an extreme scenario. This is a good point. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's the other thing, too. It's like, am I, am I really too bent out of shape that two 15 year old kids who were shooting people drunk, uh, you know, shooting at, but also, you know, you don't, I see some
Starting point is 00:04:18 kid driving by with a painted black gun out the door. I'm not thinking, oh, that's probably an Orbeez that he's shooting at me. So, you know, if you're two kids who are about to go wreak havoc, I'm not going to cry for you. But when you start to play out all the other scenarios where a car might surveil you, stalk you, spy on you and lock you in a car or call the authorities, it's like, so now some security or operations person at waymo is like judge jury and executioner on your behavior it's kind of crazy right it also takes the joy out of childhood a little bit too right if you if you feel like at
Starting point is 00:04:49 any given moment like well maybe it makes it more fun i don't know like you might get caught by the waymo surveillance cameras we might be getting watched by the satellites in space like how are we going to get away with this but yeah i mean it's it's it's a lot harder to get away with anything it's funny you say that because uh obviously flock um i don't for those that don't know flock is like this whole uh camera system uh that they put up in residential areas usually uh they have license plate readers all this stuff i saw um who's the guy uh adam he uh like jump adam adam 22 no jumper yeah that guy right um he had on i'm pretty sure they were like the two ringleaders of like some sort of san francisco or california-based like criminal enterprise
Starting point is 00:05:30 and they were talking on a podcast with their real faces visible yeah saying we can't steal cars anymore because of flock and i was like wait what and i just saw a clip online and they were basically saying that because the license plate readers it's very easy but the cops also have drones now so they were like yeah if we steal a car they just shoot the drones up in the air they start tracking us wherever you go then they got the license plate reader and the cameras so like hearing the people who are openly admitting like we used to steal cars we can't do that anymore because of this technology positive development yeah same time is there's a lot of people who are fighting all the flock installations and being like what do you mean i
Starting point is 00:06:08 just was like driving down the street you're just videotaping me for no reason right i mean the story i saw a flock was a an amazon package was stolen off of someone's front porch okay that was first of all we knew that because of a ring camera because there's just constantly surveillance oh the ring camera caught somebody stealing that person okay and that was like we need to identify who that person is now they went to uh someone in that neighborhood who did look extremely like this girl so i could understand why it was like a suspect but the only evidence they had they came back to her with a you know folder paper that said you were in this town from 11 52 to 1209 and that's exactly when this crime happened you did it and that i mean that was it oh because
Starting point is 00:06:47 what they did is they took the ring camera and knew it was a woman who kind of sort of looked like this and then they and then they had the license plate reader or something and so they put together these two pieces of data and they went to her and said you stole the package and and she was they were like why else would you be there and she was like i drive to work there that's my route to go to and from work you will catch me there like all the time and then she had her own video evidence showing that her car was actually in this town and it was a picture of you know other evidence that they just would not look at because it sounded to me like they were excited almost to be like we used our new system and we got you and so she used some type of surveillance
Starting point is 00:07:26 It was AI versus AI, surveillance versus surveillance. And she did eventually get off, but she had to like, I think she had to go to court. She had to do all this nonsense and it was all over some petty theft. But, you know, what if it's not? What if she matched the description of a hit and run or a murder or something crazy? I'm surprised Bezos hasn't invented like a unstealable package. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:47 Like locks to the ground somehow, like extra gravity from space. You can't lift it up. Or, you know, like when people rob a bank in the movies. Yeah, it explodes on you. The ink powder. Like, if you steal an Amazon package, there should be powder that comes out of the box. Isn't it Amazon's policy? Like, if it does get stolen or break, they just, like, whatever, we'll send you a new one, right?
Starting point is 00:08:07 Probably. It's, like, an insane amount of, like, we'll just accept that. We print so much money. We want to make you happy. Right. Yeah. It is nice. They will do it on, it's happened, if I get, like, Uber delivery to our office building,
Starting point is 00:08:18 you know, every, I don't know, one out of every hundred times, the food delivery guy says, I'm not going to figure out where to put it. He just puts it outside on the freaking sidewalk in New York City. Like, dude, what do you think is going to happen? By the second that they upload the photo, right? And you're like, oh, man. And you get down there, it's over, right? And so then you like message the Uber guy and you're like, someone stole it.
Starting point is 00:08:38 And they're like, send evidence. It's not here. I'm hungry. That's the evidence. I'm still hungry, jerk. I don't have it. And I'm like, look, he put it on the sidewalk in New York City. What do you think happened to it?
Starting point is 00:08:52 You think I got it? um all right so like but do you worry about though i think flock i just like caught that news story and i started to see it bubbling i think that's gonna be the next especially because it's got a name like we're gonna it's gonna be flock cameras and there's gonna be people who are pissed about that there i think is it different than ring cameras like ring i think people maybe they understand the residential use case also you choose you put up your own ring like i don't have a ring camera because i i think it's a little bit weird or i also a ring camera outside home protection fine it's like the people who have like nest cameras in all their rooms
Starting point is 00:09:24 their houses and it's like i don't know man i want to like pick my nose in my living room and not worry about someone looking at it you know when you're like when your kid was younger did you guys have a camera watching the kid for like the yeah in the nursery yeah yeah yeah so like like that's the other thing though is i've seen stories where those can get hacked pretty easily oh wow now i don't know what you do i don't know what you do with like a camera feed of like an infant sleeping yeah you know creepy but it's weird right like if you're a parent you're like wait a minute hold on a second here like if you're if you're putting any sort of like device smart something or other you're gonna always be susceptible to that i don't know if this is true
Starting point is 00:10:02 but i was i i heard that after the holiday with the 78 degrees with mom donnie that um somebody was saying that if you have like a smart thermostat they can just lock you at that like they can go in there and be like we're making it 78 so that we don't lose any power and you have to know how to kind of like circumvent it and hack it and get in there because they and i don't know if that's true jailbreak thermostat yeah yeah that's what it sounded like you need to do and like you know there's some 14 year old kid on craigslist right i will jailbreak your thermostat for a hundred dollars yeah exactly and i'll gladly pay for you bro 278 degrees 200 if you could be here in a half hour yeah and like and like extra hack it so it can go down to like 41
Starting point is 00:10:41 I want to live in a freezer, man. Yes, it is weird, though. Like, I think it's maybe a good heuristic of like, if you put the ring on yourself and your own property, that's one thing. But if you then go in your neighborhood and somebody else got to decide that the camera is there, your homeowners association or a mayor, a local, whatever. And they're just like, we're going to be watching you always. And it's like my big problem with all these things is there's always going to be extreme examples where this is a great thing. Like I said, if that Waymo stopped a school shooting, amazing. The Waymo would be the hero.
Starting point is 00:11:15 Amazing. But are we going to like, that's the 0.01% of life. And the other 99.9 is now going to be surveilled. And I just don't like that. I always think this technology, though. I think it from major things like this down to like umpires in baseball with the challenge. Like, I don't like it. My generation feels like it's robotic and we need an umpire and the human element.
Starting point is 00:11:36 and you know when they're overturning calls that are microscopic i don't like that we're like the only generation in history that's we're gonna die out and the new people who have grown up with it this way are not gonna get twice about it they're just gonna have to so yeah cameras follow you when you drive through your neighborhood don't do anything stupid cameras watch you at home don't you know scratch your balls like i i think they're just gonna grow up with that as standards so i don't think there'll be much outrage long outrage i think we'll be you know a period of outrage for people like us who are dinosaurs and the rest of people it's just the way the world goes before we move on we talk about umpires let's give uh your boy a shout out the uh the baseball umpire on
Starting point is 00:12:12 instagram is electric dude what what is this yeah what is this thing sit down dude so this this is a uh uh we'll put his uh handle on the screen he's truly one of my favorite followers in a long time he's a umpire for local beer leagues and little league but he calls out how ridiculous the kids are and how much money they spend and how they act so he'll like play a little clip and then it cuts back to him and he just goes sit down kid and it is so good every time because now that i'm doing some youth sports stuff myself these there are just times you want to like the parents or a little kid you just want to wring their neck sit down he's like uh sir your son it did not uh strike out because i'm bad at my job he just has 1400 for the gear and he can't hit a baseball that's
Starting point is 00:12:59 Yo, man, you want to talk about business? The business of youth sports? It's crazy. Insane. And it's almost become cliche. If you consume a lot of that youth sports content, it's like, we're all saying it. So it's not a novel concept, but it is goddamn true.
Starting point is 00:13:13 I mean, the amount of money. Like, what do you spend money on for? Oh my God. So like, you know what the craziest is? Dance for my daughter. Dance? Dance is like 10 grand. It's nuts.
Starting point is 00:13:22 What? Because they got to pay for like, they're in these competitions. Now my daughter does a lot of dance. So she's in like seven different things. So it's a lot. but tap, ballet, hip-hop, I'm like, just pick one dance and do it.
Starting point is 00:13:35 But they need to rent out these arenas and theaters for the competitions, and that costs money, and they all have to have the costumes, and then they're also putting it in their fat pockets. A hundred percent. So there's that. You know how you know sports, you sports is making money?
Starting point is 00:13:50 It's private equities involved. Yeah. If private equity sniffs you out. If they say, hey, this is a good spot for us to be in, that means that money has ended up in someone's pocket, and they want a piece of it. And we know they're going to ruin it even more. Like, they ruin everything else in the world.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Private equity, goddammit. But, you know, even soccer. What about at these sporting events? Are the parents, like, recording everything and editing and, like... Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Everyone is now a videographer. Everyone is, you know...
Starting point is 00:14:14 For, like, fun on Instagram? Or, like, my kid's going to go play college sports? Both. But the delusion, the amount of, like... You know, if your kid playing even, like, high school varsity in any of these sports is probably pretty slim. it is infinitesimal that you're going to play college and it is a zero percent chance you're going to play pro and everybody out there just i guess thinks like i never even once considered it
Starting point is 00:14:37 i was like i will i just hope my kids are on the team in high school and like or in sports is a fun thing in their life i've never even considered college thinking your kid's gonna go pro you better have like a superstar but yeah these people are constantly filming the the arguing the fighting it is so embarrassing and i know again it's nothing new you'll see a million pieces of content out there every day but i just could never fathom being a person at a game with like seven year olds and you're cursing and screaming and picking fights and like because it's not the kids it the kids are fine i mean the kids are a little bit like spoiled they do have too much gear that shit but for the most part the kids just want to like play ball yeah and it's the parents
Starting point is 00:15:16 and the coaches and they're the real problems you know even when we make fun of people are uh when the whole participation trophy angle was a big thing the kids are not the ones giving out the participation trophies that was the parents that was that generation so when people kids are soft these days they want participation trophies like they didn't decide to give those out they just showed up to the field you guys gave them so i i think you know kids are always pretty innocent until the technology the parents the world gets into them and then they everyone's part of the problem but yeah it is my thing about soccer the whole reason soccer even is the thing that the junk or not that it is is because you need a ball and like some sort of square to kick it into and
Starting point is 00:15:55 the poorest kids in the world could play it and now it's like two grand to play travel soccer what could that pop where's that money going where's that money going you need no you need orange slices that is and you know yeah if you if that came with like cleats and everything you need but i don't think it does i think it comes with a ticket to play at your crappy field and i just put two grand in my pocket because why because people will pay yeah you know i i have a dream of like starting my own little league league and like the first rule is going to be no bat can be over 99 if i see the bat is five there are 500 bats for kids who are seven years old and are like holding the bat they don't even know how to hold it 500 yes like the the big bat
Starting point is 00:16:38 would be like $499 and so so no no bats uh and no other equipment you can't have a sliding mitt you can't wear jewelry you can't just show up i used to have like a hunk of metal and like you know a helmet that probably wouldn't have even worked if i got hit in the head and that was it like that's how we played so yeah it's gotten absolutely you know at a store we all probably grew up on that uh i don't even know if it exists anymore but like young kids probably have no clue about is play it again sports oh my god just to go in there that just triggered i didn't know what you were gonna say there play it again sports right and it was just like yes you'd go and you'd buy something that somebody else had already used and it was awesome because your parents
Starting point is 00:17:17 let you get extra shit because it was cheaper than if you went to you know whatever there is an app i can't remember the name but one of the one of the other baseball dads once was like don't spend the 500 bucks you can get it for like 100 over here a little bit used so there is some app that i think is pretty successful but it's just like the whole world is just if i can make money off of you i will and i think there used to be a little it's always that way especially in capitalism in america but i feel like there used to be some discretion the other thing about you sports that i think is gonna be fascinating is uh have you seen these apps where they're using ai to like track the kids on the field yet wow so like what they'll do it's like let's say you're
Starting point is 00:17:52 a college football you know coach you're watching game tape of your own players right what they're starting to do now is they'll say like okay almost like a video game you get to circle around the like the the feet of the video game player follows and they're like follow right very cool but now it's coming into youth sports i've seen multiple people that have young kids who are posting on instagram and they're like here's my kid like playing soccer or playing football or whatever and it's following where they are so one it does help visually to see where they are sure but it's also measuring like how fast they're running you know what i mean like my kid's top speed of the game like uh okay you know i remember going to college i played football in college and i remember
Starting point is 00:18:27 the coach used to say they would measure how many steps for every five yards if you took two steps in the five yards that meant you ran at least a four six or four six or faster we'll just extrapolate that yeah yeah yeah i have no clue if that's actually true or not but that's what they used to say so like now they have like technology but at least that's college we're talking you're tracking you're like seven year old running on the soccer field like dude top speed top speed i mean it is a weird thing because i i fall i fall victim to it also it's like if my kid hits a home run or does something cool or my girl's on stage dancer solo like i want to film that and i and and we use social media to like show our lives but inherently it's also like
Starting point is 00:19:06 who gives a shit about your kid dude like i don't want to watch that you know you don't want to think about the surveillance though that has uh i think been uh put some people's brain in a blender is take like a cop body cams so if i remember correctly the body cams were actually instituted because it was like the cops are beating people up the cops are planting things the cops are xyz thing the cops are bad and this i think that the body cams have done more to help the cops a lot of people are like well that guy was being an asshole like that or just like violent or dangerous or whatever just like what you're saying is not true the cop did not plant that like the cop opened your bag and you had drugs it's true man i mean it can help it's like
Starting point is 00:19:48 if you are a good cop yeah you should you should want the body cam not only because you're not or anything wrong but you're gonna prove and you're gonna show sometimes i see those and i i have more respect for i'm like damn like that was that was confrontational that was dangerous that was probably scary and it was just like a traffic stop and it wasn't anything crazy but yeah there are definitely times i see that footage and it makes me it's probably having the opposite effect of what the people who posted think it's gonna did you see the uh cop who shot the guy with the uh sword in the subway a couple weeks ago oh dude this this like this one really was crazy that's not the most like new york so you know the guy just put the sword in the subway he got
Starting point is 00:20:24 shot by the cops so like i think what happened is this guy he had like slashed two people or something and so he's in the subway it's at grand central and uh the body cam footage i saw is the cops got his gun out and he's basically like put the sword down man put the sword down and he's like obviously like he's getting like more and more ratcheted up and there's like people in the background who are like oh shit there's a cop with a gun and a guy with a sword like i'm getting out here right and the cop is like come on man put the gun or put the sword down put the sword down and at some point he says something to the effective put the sword down i don't want to shoot you i don't want it like and you can just tell he is in his brain preparing himself i have
Starting point is 00:20:59 to shoot this guy yes and any of the guy and he's walking towards him with the sword and he's by the way he's yelling like shoot me or you know whatever right yeah and he's like essentially begging the guy don't make me shoot you i do not i did not come to work today with like let's go shoot somebody right right but you're like i don't know man that guy's got a sword who if i remember correctly he's already slashed two people and he is moving towards you like what else is open and close as possible you don't try to disarm them right right and so you're like watching this and again people will be like oh you should have shot him in the leg or this or whatever nonsense right i feel like they always say like if you're gonna shoot if you're gonna
Starting point is 00:21:33 fire it like you got to make it count so and so we don't know well you know people i don't know all the details engagement for when you're in you know all i know is that when i watched it my personal reaction was this cop everything he did was against his own like what he wanted to do right right but that body cam it made me feel sorry for the police officer who was like this is my job i'm here like think about it to me as the police officer with training and all this stuff then like some random dude who's gotta like disarm a guy with a sword right but also you're like what do you you know what would you do in that situation and so like the technology in a weird way it actually like gave tons of context to what would have other just been a headline like
Starting point is 00:22:13 cop shoot guy with swords she said like you have no idea yeah i mean i i always think about like the the one bad apple type argument but it's like yeah the vast majority of these guys are going to work like thinking uh you know i might pull somebody over for a ticket and all of a sudden you're involved in a subway sword fight what but that's also why i would just never be a cop it's a crazy job who makes that and uh and the other thing is do you know when you turn on the body cams that it goes back like 30 or 60 seconds so if you're a cop and let's say because you can turn them on right but it's always like kind of recording i believe and so when you hit it off it's capturing but i guess it's like auto deleting or something right but like let's say that uh you
Starting point is 00:22:53 come up on a scene so you hit it and i think you're supposed to like hit it when you get out of the car there's like all these rules but it goes back 60 seconds and it starts the like saving the recording from that so i saw one time a video of a guy who 100 planted drugs like threw it in the grass and then picked up was like i found it and then turned it on and i caught that oh but then it was like no dude like you forgot that he has a 60 second delay or whatever and they're like uh you're gonna get in trouble for this but again it goes back to like having the body cam was actually a positive thing for this guy who was like no dude he planted the drugs Yeah. I mean that, that I feel like body cam should just be on all.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Why has he been an on and off option? I don't know. I guess the only time you're turning it off. I guess there are some practical, but like if you were turning it on and off, there's probably a reason why you don't want it to be on. How many, how many times is it like, ah, my battery was dead. I'm sure. Dog ate my homework.
Starting point is 00:23:48 Right, right, right. Today's episode is brought to you by TikTok for business. If you run a company, you are probably already spending a bunch of money on ads, search X, maybe meta, but there's a platform your competitors are sleeping on. and the window to move first is closing. TikTok has over 200 million monthly active users
Starting point is 00:24:06 in the US alone, and 51% of that reach is unique, meaning that those users aren't reachable on any other major platform where you are already buying. Unlike follower-based platforms, TikTok's algorithm rewards strong creative, not audience size. That means a well-made video from a brand no one's heard of can reach millions of relevant users.
Starting point is 00:24:24 For companies trying to acquire users cost-effectively, that's a fundamentally different model. TikTok for Business gives you full funnel tools built for performance. Whether you're looking to drive awareness, introduce your products, or convert new audiences, TikTok is becoming an important discovery engine for businesses and cryptocurrency alike. If you're a founder, a CMO, or growth lead, and you haven't run a TikTok campaign yet, now's the time to change that. Click on the link in the description or go to anthonypompliano.splashthat.com.
Starting point is 00:24:55 Again, click on the link in the description and go check out TikTok for business today. proof but my generation was so obsessed with the idea of or were told to be obsessed with the idea of owning a home and i just i mean i'm very lucky to be in the position i was where i could if i didn't get if i didn't work at barstool and i just kind of continued as an accountant like i probably would have been able to afford one but not great and it probably would have wiped me out and it would have been you know and it's like when you just see how much housing's gone up and how much salaries have gone up there i mean that's it there's you know what i mean it used to be somewhat comparable it's like i remember you know my i think my dad was making like 90
Starting point is 00:25:59 grand in like the early 90s my mom i don't think was working that was enough we like family of four or five of us buy a house have a backyard a pool now you know and i guess you know living in new york is pretty extreme but i just don't get how anybody could do it and i i think i would have just abandoned the idea of being a homeowner. If I didn't have the job I had and I wasn't lucky the way I was, I think I would just rent. Like, this is not a possibility. One of the things I find interesting is if you do the math, it's not clear that always buying the home is the right financial decision. And that was what beaten into us. Yes. To my generation of just like renting is stupid. You don't own anything at the end of the day. You're flushing your money down the toilet.
Starting point is 00:26:41 And I really did think that. And now I'm like, yeah, wait a minute. Wouldn't it kind of just be like a mortgage versus rent and you have a super and uh someone to take care of everything and you know like when i first maybe i don't want to own anything honestly owning shit is just more my whole life is just like i just don't want responsibility and then i went and got kids and a house and it's like all i have is responsibility now but you know like the first time i i owned a house everyone's saying oh it's gonna cost a lot to maintain that and i'm thinking like i'll figure out how to do the landscaping whatever you know and then a tree falls down and it's like that'll be 15 000 to get those two trees removed otherwise the next one's
Starting point is 00:27:17 going through your living room so i'm like oh okay that sounds bad thousand dollar bill i didn't expect and like and this pops up and that pops up and it is yeah it's it feels impossible especially i'm in westchester new york i mean try it if you if you want a school if you want a house in the school district with a good school you have to be rich you have to be successful how much do you think those houses are like i'm in the bronxville area and that again that's extreme that's like roger goodell lives there i think it's like one of the most expensive neighborhoods you and roger are boys you know in my never-ending battle with dave the the best thing i could do for content would be boys with roger goodell just like going out to dinner with him hey dave uh but i mean
Starting point is 00:27:59 you know the taxes there are like 50 grand a year and the houses are you know decent for like two million dollars and it's like it's a home but it is not a you know a two million dollar house when i was growing up if you told me that your house was two million dollars you're you're michael jordan you're a professional athlete like and yeah so i i just give a basketball court inside the house actually yeah all right i i may and maybe again this is to go back to what i was saying earlier there's going to be one generation in the transitional period that this like blows their mind but you know the even just the phrase like you're a millionaire that does not mean what what it used to mean you can have a couple million bucks and depending on where you live and what
Starting point is 00:28:36 your lifestyle is and you can get it done have you seen recently the uh the conversations online about uh there's people make a million dollars in new york city but they're living paycheck to paycheck and people outside you're still like that's that's crazy that's crazy whatever and the breakdown that i saw was like all right so make a million dollars half of it goes to the government right out of the period okay so 500k still that is a ton of money yeah five times more your dad was making you know as a um in the 90s right but then people start to say okay well uh i need a two-bedroom because i have three kids plus you know my wife all right that means that's going to be uh nine thousand dollars well hold on that's 20 percent of you know just for shelter
Starting point is 00:29:18 yeah okay then they're like and then groceries and this and that and oh by the way i want my kid to go to a private school well there's all the money it's gone like and and you know i'm not i'm sure there are people out there way less fortunate who say well that that's my dream i would love that i understand that but for when you that used to be an amount of money that would get you your dream life and it is getting you a house and your kids school that's it you know and for context for people um i actually think that there's this very weird thing in new york where um you can get uh two good experiences you can go to a private school and you can get a great experience or you can go to a public school and get a great experience as well and i think that
Starting point is 00:29:57 people who are like oh uh all public education is like horrible they're dumb and i think people who are like all private education is like elitist bullshit whatever like they're dumb too so it's like there's this like stratification but the private schools in new york city to send your kid uh i don't know middle school 70 grand yeah i mean the sunday numbers are absolutely nuts when i started when my kids hit like i guess pre-k like preschool and i got an email saying tuition is due and i was like tuition can we can we at least just call it something different because i'm thinking tuition is college i'm paying for college maybe a private high school i'm paying tuition for a four-year-old and it's thousands of dollars for you to paint macaroni things and like
Starting point is 00:30:42 go there for a couple hours you're a glorified babysitter i'm paying you five thousand dollars and i mean especially in new york in westchester it is you know you're paying the taxes of a town with a good public school or you're paying the tuition of a private school and it's you know kind of pick your poison and i was kind of of the school of of thought that uh in the westchester area all these schools have you know this is a blue ribbon school this is rated nine out of ten and i'm like what are these because i grew up in this area i've been to all these schools they all seem like pretty comparable but then i start to learn like well ivy league schools take a bigger percentage from these schools and not those schools and it's like i i always hate my main
Starting point is 00:31:20 thing that i hate is to like kind of give in to the rat race and some of the things that i'm like morally opposed to but what am i going to do like not give my kids a chance the the best chance they can to live their life so you got to like play by those rules but man some of them seem like these are just if not designed to they inherently keep the little guy down or don't give anybody a shot unless you are like really successful one of the funniest things that i've seen recently is a friend of mine he's got uh kids probably three years old and uh he was applying to go to like preschool or whatever and he said that he was getting interviewed he was getting interviewed and then he was like yeah so if uh if they need to like a reference will you do it i was like
Starting point is 00:32:01 you want me to be a reference for your three-year-old he goes no no he goes no not for the three-year-old for me i was like wait a minute they're gonna call and they're gonna call me and ask me if you're good so that your three-year-old can go to their school i said man your whole family's got to be in order to get your kid into preschool i said i don't know what the details of the school are but sounds like i should maybe i should go go you know sign some of these kids the nil deals or something already i need to get into some sort of charter school business and charge these parents whatever i want oh this is crazy when it when it comes down to parental stuff and and for your kids like i i do feel pressure of like well if i don't pay this or
Starting point is 00:32:40 enroll in this like i'm harming my kids and it shouldn't be that way but it just kind of is like i don't know how to i don't even i wouldn't even know how to begin to fix it like there's so many problems in this world that i'm like i can't even think of a solution on the home ownership thing one of the things i do find interesting though is maybe people under the age of 35 there's still a lot of folks that i know who they they want to be in a position to be able to afford a home which is some marker of like financial success but they are like but i don't want to own the home because actually enjoy working remotely traveling you know having flexibility like all this stuff it's like it is this weird like the boomer narrative of like everyone should own a home and then there's
Starting point is 00:33:19 a bunch of people who are like no lifestyle wife i don't actually want to own a home then don't do it yeah yeah or get married have kids like there are just like three or four major life things that i feel like i was never even explicitly taught it it was just like this is the way it goes and so i did everything at the right time i was supposed to when i should have recognized like for myself and i'm sure other people out there have different scenarios but similar of like my life is kind of going down this alternative path with the internet and barstool and all that so i i'm probably not going to fall into those traditional buckets but i tried to like live a normal life anyway and kind of all got jacked up it's not a right fit what your parents think
Starting point is 00:33:56 when you told them about barstool uh they were they were outwardly supportive and inwardly like are you out of your goddamn mind uh but you stayed at the um at the audit firm or whatever for the first couple years so i was at deloitte uh and and barstool what a sellout oh dude it was i my deloitte story is like my favorite thing so it was like i won i like stuck it to the man i get this job that i have no business getting in the first place i have an auditor i it was a weird it was uh we called it agreed upon procedures instead of an audit and i wasn't a traditional know like i didn't go client to client we stayed in one office and we just worked on whatever uh monthly cdos were given to us sounds like nerd shit in total nerd shit and i was terrible at it
Starting point is 00:34:41 and i hated it but it was in 0809 and it was the exact financial instrument that was bringing down the economy was what i was working on and maybe those two things are related and so and i know i don't know what i'm doing every day i was like i don't know any of this and then and then i go home and i see like cnbc is like collateralized debt obligations is ruining america and i was like did i start the recession like this this might be my i think i'm like one percent responsible for the recession so uh but i i knew i was terrible at it and i started my own blog just for fun and that's when dave saw that right when he was looking to expand and long story short he wasn't able to pick just one person so i worked barstool part-time and deloitte part-time for
Starting point is 00:35:28 two years. Did Deloitte? No, but Deloitte didn't know I was working as a blogger and the blog readers didn't know I had a job. And I was talking like, oh, I used to be an accountant. They didn't know I was like actively an accountant. Well, hold on. You said that you worked part-time at Deloitte. Did Deloitte know you were part-time? No, no, it was a full-time job. I'm saying like, I, yeah. Yeah, I got you. It was actually the perfect storm. If I had any other job, I don't think I'm at Barstool because this job, it was paying well out of college and I had benefits my parents were like you're set don't worry don't do anything stupid um but the way that job worked was you get all your work for the b it goes monthly you get all your work for the
Starting point is 00:36:07 month up front oh and they were like as as long as you get it done you get it done and it mostly was was evenly spread out but right around like the 15th would be crazy so i would stay late i would go nuts but then i was free to blog like i just had my desk like nobody would check in on you if you got your work done. So I would just blog from my desk. And I ended up just like getting double paychecks for a few years. I got severance. They were like, you're so bad. We're going to transfer you to a new department. And I was like, no, thank you. And they were like, no, no, no, you're not understanding. Like if we don't transfer you, you're getting fired. And I was like, cool. And they won't do it. So I kind of gamed the system on that one as best I
Starting point is 00:36:46 could. I'm always like, I stuck it to the man. When you think about the rise of Barstool, the one aspect of it that's always hilarious to me is like there was the newspaper then there was like a blog now it's just like free run on twitter and it's like in the ether yeah yeah there's no form it's just like i think all of us grew up in an age where it became not taboo to just say whatever was on your mind and if you look back actually the people who just said the truth or said what they were thinking they're the people who accumulated the audiences everyone else was like oh i can't say that because my job would like see authenticity reigns supreme man it always has always will but i feel like we're in an era right now especially with ai and the algorithm and people
Starting point is 00:37:29 just it used to be i'm going to do something interesting and cool and i'm passionate about it and that will translate and that's why it will grow and now it's like what does the algorithm already reward i'm going to do that it's just a whole copycat league you know and uh there let me this is actually interesting way to think about it you listen to podcasts yeah some of them when's the last time you found a really interesting new podcast i think it's very hard to find get kind of set net new podcast right yeah and so like i don't know i've gone through different like seasons if you i used to listen to joe rogan a ton and then it's just like okay cool i get it every once in a while he's a guest like i'll listen you know taylor sheridan was not recently
Starting point is 00:38:09 excellent episode yeah awesome then uh they're similar genres so like the sean ryan's of the world drug crush right three hour episodes all stuff then you've got like business podcast right or whatever but i started thinking the other day i'm like i don't know maybe once a year maybe once every six months i find a new podcast it's i mean the whole industry has exploded to a level of like i don't think that that happens anymore yeah but i find a new twitter account true every day or every other day because it's but it's also it's just more of a commitment i read your tweet it looks fine i follow you whatever whereas like am i gonna not i'm gonna listen to you for 30 minutes an hour two hours but more importantly are you good
Starting point is 00:38:54 enough that i'm not going to listen to joe rogan and sean ryan i feel like when i started especially started podcasting i started in 2012 it was you know you could buy the equipment and start and if you had a good friend dynamic and you just were funny it works you could be success i was that was me you know now it's like are you gonna listen to me and my buddies are you gonna listen to your favorite basketball players who are now telling all the secrets of the nba the rappers who get together talking about being on tour everyone's an entertainer it's like it became hollywood where you know growing up i would have never said i'm gonna act in movies Cause I know I'm not Leonardo DiCaprio.
Starting point is 00:39:30 I'm not George Clooney, but you could be like, I, you know, I can be a podcaster and it's true. You get your equipment, you get it out there. People like it.
Starting point is 00:39:40 I don't think that's the case anymore, man. It's like, why should I listen to you when there's a lot more intriguing and interesting people? I mean, you have to be either be a star, a real talent,
Starting point is 00:39:52 or have some sort of angle. You're either grandfathered in a net bow, baby, whatever it is for people to tune into your like two hour podcast i also don't know how much the audiences move right like that that's always interesting to me where um let's say you've got a really big podcast and you like vouch for somebody not like it used to i mean look at rogan if you got on rogan 20 10 years ago 15 years ago your your your career is made andrew schultz talked about it he's like dude this guy he's like look schultz is hilarious right and like substance
Starting point is 00:40:21 wise he's a plus but he's publicly talked about it he's like joe rogan was incredibly important for my rise in my career yep rogan maybe he's still like a one of one and so he can still kind of king make a little bit but there's not many people like that yeah i mean joe will for sure give you a boost no matter what but like yeah he could take you out of obscurity and make you like a superstar with like just a mention you know that the uh the sushi chef he rolls with philip franklin lee he was like i had a food truck at a festival joe ate one he said hey can i get a reservation at your restaurant and he was like oh i don't actually have a restaurant here it's just a food truck he was like if you open a restaurant i will plug it so this guy just on a like on a
Starting point is 00:41:01 promise opened a sushi sushi restaurant in austin joe talked about it and he was like i was booked for six straight months like and now my career is and i think joe might have anybody i keep saying joe but i think the king makers i think might have a easier time anointing like go to this restaurant yeah something versus like go listen to this other content it's like i'm listening to you man i don't wanna i ran into that with my podcast we we hit the the comedy revolution at the right time we i like to i would like to think we were part of it as well uh and all of these really funny guys coming on the show and they at that point were pretty undiscovered they were on their way but you know getting schultz on the rise getting krista stefano when they're on the come up
Starting point is 00:41:44 and my my podcast was successful as a result but then they all started their own podcast and it's like they used to only be able to get it from me or a couple other guests hosts and now they have their own thing and i actually wish i my big regret is i wish i saw that writing on the wall a little bit more because had i thought to myself we're on a good run right now but this is going to end because of that let's start to pivot i think we would have been in better position instead we just kind of held on as long as we could but um and yeah you think ai could uh do the podcast like is ai going to replace a lot of the content no i i i started looking into ai in terms of like production and editing and there's a couple good uh companies out there the one we i was
Starting point is 00:42:25 really working in like looking into was opus and they have a great product for like if you don't have a producer this will listen to the show and it'll identify the the good moments and it'll clip it and subtitle it and all that stuff for you but it always like just there's just a limit at least at this iteration it doesn't quite get humor yet it doesn't get like it can it can sense when somebody was yelling on the podcast but was that really funny and so there's still i think when it comes to content you the creator still really does matter uh because if if the edit couldn't even be like fully done i don't think it can just produce do you watch any of the like ai influencers on instagram i don't like seek them i've seen them before but i think you're insane if you like
Starting point is 00:43:07 follow that and watch that right like that's not and it's usually like some hot girl that's clearly fake and just kind of i've seen i've seen jewish rabbis i've seen italian mafia men you know what maybe i've seen and i don't realize you don't realize that's the other thing man i like i love when when when the second when the video of alex preddy came out that was kind of like damning of his behavior and everyone just automatically that's ai that's fake and i had posted people were killing me for it and then it turned out to be real it's like the new the new i was hacked or whatever is like that's ai if something happens to say that people still say that it's like dude oh my my twitter account got hacked uh it was three o'clock in the morning and here's a picture
Starting point is 00:43:50 of you on the flock camera drinking last night and it's like what else happened during this alleged hack they just logged in and sent one tweet and that's it like get out of here but yeah i uh that happened to be at the person talking to you right but i you know i don't even pretend if i get it wrong i'm like how i'm not like a film expert it's it's fake i'm sorry i got duped like the best one you who should have said they got hacked was uh paul pierce with the live stream if he if he had somehow come on a live stream yeah that wasn't me man yeah like hey man what what happened there somebody hacked my phone i feel like that was one of the like wait what is going because wasn't it like two o'clock in
Starting point is 00:44:32 afternoon on like a tuesday he was just like loaded drunk i get i was he's a great but that like you can't even if ai gets to the point where it really can understand humor and conversation you're not going to get like a wild moment the ai is never going to be like all right now let me say something crazy and controversial to go viral and like that has to be a human like oh i fucked up i shouldn't have said that and that's why we like live and that's why we like authentic content i don't think you can do that yet but i don't know who knows so from all these things like uh we're talking about housing we talk about like all the technology what ai can do can't do uh humanoid robots i think it's like what sign me up you're in give me that jetson's life what was
Starting point is 00:45:13 her name betty that little like i saw something you put one in your house i i jokingly say i would and i'm like lazy enough and hate like housework enough that if you told me like this thing can do your dishes and like vacuum the floor i'd be like i'll do that but then i think about like the flock cameras and everything we were discussing where it's like that thing will be hacked and spying on you in two seconds do you have like an amazon or alexa or anything like that i don't i i think my tv has it like enabled but i don't i don't use that i don't i don't uh i don't use any of that what about the like a cleaning robot uh a roomba like a room i don't have one but i would you would but i guess when you start to think that like anything's hackable i don't know well it was
Starting point is 00:45:51 rumored i don't know bite your ankle i chase you around it's listening or something i'm giving out my secrets i don't know yeah but like that's the thing right it's like there's a lot of people who have the alexas there's a lot of people who have like the rumbas or medics or whatever so like isn't the human kind of just like i mean yeah sure it's got arms and that's what i'm saying like when when rumba came out we weren't like this is crazy stop yeah no people were like clean my house right and so but now you know maybe me and you are a little uncomfortable with like this human thing walking around but again that's a small generation we're going to kick the bucket, and then the people who were
Starting point is 00:46:25 raised in a world where there's humanoids in your house, it's just fucking normal. Yeah, it's normal. I saw there's a Roomba competitor, I think it's called Matic, if I remember correctly, and I saw that when you get one, they send stickers, but the stickers,
Starting point is 00:46:41 you can put it on in certain places, and it makes it look like it's a dog. Man, we're getting weird, dude. I think about this all the time. By the way, if they send the stickers, you got to put them on, right? gotta have a robot dog what do you think is going on right now that we will look back on society will look back on us thinking like they were so stupid they you know when we were like
Starting point is 00:47:05 can you believe they used to think that the earth was the center of the universe oh yeah like there's something going on right now that we all think as logical intelligent people like this is 100% the case oh that's gonna be fake right a bunch of stuff what do you think what do you think like the main one of the big ones is they let humans be the doctors or or the drivers too yeah people you're gonna let the robots drive the car they're gonna go you let the humans 100 drive you know a 5 000 pound vehicle 100 miles what do you while they're texting and doing this yeah you know whatever right so like like that uh the doctors um you should do surgery with your hands instead a laser have i not told you the story of uh i have uh two young twin boys and uh
Starting point is 00:47:46 they would probably still be here without ai but there's a very good chance that there could have been a different decision um well my my wife set up my wife was pregnant uh we knew that it was twins but she goes to get checked and uh they do the scan and i'm there and the doctors uh you know like dark in the room she puts down the scanner she turns on the lights and she sits down she's we need to have a conversation and i'm like oh here we go right what do we have a conversation about and she's basically like all right so you have twins there is no uh membrane wall between the twins so they're in the same like sack and there's one placenta i'm not a doctor i don't know shit about babies other than she then says this is about the highest risk twin situation that
Starting point is 00:48:37 we could have great that didn't sound great great news yeah so i immediately you know i'm a problem solver i go to like so what's the solution right and she got another membrane in there so she's like pretty much almost everybody who's in this situation would terminate the pregnancy you met my wife is just like you know distraught all this stuff whatever right and it was like it was the first scan so like that's supposed to be you know this like great memory and like also right especially for her and so we leave i'm like i don't even know what conversation to have you know i'm trying to console her all this stuff whatever so when you leave the scan for anyone who hasn't had a kid before they give you the like sonogram or whatever like pictures yeah and so uh
Starting point is 00:49:18 my wife takes it and she takes a picture she puts it in chat gpt and she says the doctor told me blah blah blah whatever what do you see and chat gpt comes back and says no looks fine there's only one placenta but the membrane wall is like in between two babies because like there was like definitely like i'm not a doctor but like i don't know there's like a line like what's the line and so my wife then takes it she circles and draws an arrow to the thing and uploads it back into like the doctor portal and is like hey just out of personal curiosity like what's this before i go killing my babies like right and so um the doctor calls her and basically it's like i'm so sorry i must have been distracted i don't know what i was looking at but whatever like yes that
Starting point is 00:50:04 is the memory oh thank god it's still you know a higher risk but it's not as risky as you know if that wasn't there whatever and i was like it's a big mistake first of all you are not the doctor anymore malpractice you're out we're a doctor for anybody we're gonna go find a different could you imagine man and you would have never even known because you would have like never followed up you probably just had that and it's always like you know you don't know what you would have done like i think just like morally right we wouldn't have made any different decision we've been like look we're gonna go forward with this you know and have the babies and like we'll see what happens whatever but like i don't know if i i don't know if that'd be the case for me like but i'm like
Starting point is 00:50:41 wait a minute a lot of people are like oh ai this that i'm like no no dude every single person who goes to the doctor you should take whatever the doctor tells you and feed it into one of these systems and be like are they right right because you don't know having a bad day they're going through their own trauma they're drunk i don't know whatever like or they're just dumb or there's bad yeah there's bad yo that's that's my biggest problem with the world is it started when i myself was working on those as an accountant and i was like this is some pretty important stuff and and they're relying on me a 22 year old like and i don't know what i'm doing uh and then even like the managers and the people who i worked with were getting promoted and people were making partner
Starting point is 00:51:20 and i was like that person's dumb so i witnessed you play the game well but you are stupid i mean that's how i was so bad at my job and and because the recession was happening everyone was getting laid off and i kept making it to the point that people were kind of getting mad they were like i'm getting fired but kevin's still there and it was because i you know i could have a beer and talk with a partner and like so some people got brains some people didn't have to work the system it's just you know that's different different folks right but uh but what i've learned is like every profession every job there's somebody who's just like snake it till you make it i don't really know what i'm doing but when you're talking about doctors and lawyers and some of the people who
Starting point is 00:52:01 have like your life in their hands if they're having a snake until you make it day that's that's that's not acceptable it's crazy i just like uh i i now am like all right this ai stuff there's a bunch of probably negative side effects over time but whatever every single person goes to the doctor that happens to you once that erases the other 10 000 mistakes yeah so i also don't have i i don't know exactly how it works but sometimes i feel like it's a mirror to like who is using it because when i hear the stories of it like hallucinating and saying crazy things and telling me to like take my own life and all those wild extreme what did you say to it yeah that's what i mean like i always have very i just like asking a question gives me an answer and maybe
Starting point is 00:52:40 sometimes i'll question it and they'll be like actually you're right but i've never experienced that where so i'm like i don't know what you guys are putting in there i always wonder if somebody's like it made me run into the wall and then you're like what did you say to it you're like tell me to run into the wall and also at some level you have to have your own human brain it's like the episode the office where they drive into the lake because gps said so like just because the computer says something you don't have to stop but yeah today's episode is brought to you by bitget do you want to trade U.S. stocks using crypto but hate thin liquidity and idle assets? You watch the performance in
Starting point is 00:54:49 real time. And then only after all of that do you put real money in to go put it to work when you're 100 comfortable that's it no pressure no hidden fees no gotchas none of that nonsense go to archpublic.com right now and you can get started for free once you see how you can accumulate and manage crypto this way you'll never trade the same again archpublic.com go check them out today the uh so i think that's one is like uh human drivers doctors like that would be a big one the other one that i think is uh gonna be pretty interesting is that uh we used to have the phones because i think that at some point they're just going to be embedded in your brain you have to carry a thing around yeah like like this whole idea of it used to be outside
Starting point is 00:55:32 of whether it's computer because like we see all the glasses now yep we see uh here's a crazy staff i saw online that neural link you know elon's like brain computer interface thing they've implanted it in 26 people i thought we were on like number two yeah and how come we haven't heard like from them or hopefully hopefully it's not because they went bad right but like we're on the 26th person that's a way bigger number than that should be i mean i'm sure they're not going to document it until they know it's all good but imagine there was an account that was just like follow me the first neural linked human there is there is one guy shit out of that yeah and he's just talking about how it works yeah i forget what he posts but like there's the one guy who
Starting point is 00:56:12 is the first one he's definitely been like doing media and stuff but the one i saw the club i saw the 26th person because like here here's a good question um how many people have to have the neural link implanted in their brain safely and then you're like fine i'll do it i think it's gotta i don't know i don't know if i'd do it like if a million people and they were like you you will be smarter you'll make more money you'll do all these things a million other people have done it and it's all been safe have you seen this show pluribus no it's it's vince gilligan from breaking bad's new show and that this is basically the plot is uh it's it's either i don't think we really know i think it's like an alien guy collective comes down and there's like a they
Starting point is 00:56:56 basically put out a virus that uh makes you join this hive mind and there's 11 people on the planet left that didn't it just didn't work for them and the people who have this new you know whatever are like this is amazing like it's great we live in peace and paradise we all like work for each other but help each other uh you and and so they're working on like how can we figure out how we don't want to leave the other 11 behind we want you to join the hive and the main character the protagonist is like fighting for human you know it's actually a little on the nose with like ai versus humanity the whole show but she's like i'm not doing it and she has she's talking to her wife who is now a part of the hive and she's like please like come with us it's your
Starting point is 00:57:41 wife saying this to you and but it's not because it's not her brain you know and so she these characters these like 11 people like dig their heels in it's like billions and they're the last one standing and i i everybody who watches the show i ask him would you join or not and it's like i'd like to think i would be like no i gotta keep my humanity but if i'm if i'm one of the last ones left i'm jumping off the bridge too but if but if it's like not the whole world and like there's plenty of that's what i'm saying a million like i always go to like if a million people have done it safely would you do it i don't know i don't know it's almost more to me is everyone in my circle doing it i don't care of a million people who i never like
Starting point is 00:58:19 but if it's like my whole life is going to be this way and i'm the only one not i would probably do it out of like i don't want to be the pain in the ass who's ruining it for the group i'm so non-confrontational that i'm just like into it yeah give me a little you guys all got lobotomies do it to me too i don't want to be the odd man out but that is a great question because it's you know what is the tipping point and if someone says not no to a million 1.5 2 2.5 doesn't have to be 20 well if it's 20 why not 19 million what you know it's like or imagine now okay you go to high school you're competing against kids who have it and yeah you did you are you seeing this yet uh there's been an explosion of parents giving their uh kind of
Starting point is 00:59:02 like a puberty age kids hgh when they're when like there's no need for it's not like you're medically they're hitting their growth spurts and there's getting a little but and they're like in some cases doing it with like doctor supervision all this stuff and everything but it is helps them grow taller bigger athletic advantage you know all this stuff and you're just like well that's probably one of those things that 500 years from now they're gonna go you guys didn't take the medication that makes you better and healthier or do you out of your mind like it's kind of crazy right like i i think of that as kind of dystopian and like sci-fi and unfair and but it's it's like steroids too it's you know i remember all the major league baseball players
Starting point is 00:59:43 being like well i had to do it to keep up with the guys who were doing it so it becomes this rat race remember when mark mcguire and they're like we're not doing it mark mcguire did the smartest thing ever was he put andro which was like a loud creatine front and center in his locker so he'd be talking and there'd be this tub and he'd be like oh that's what i do it was almost like i'm going to admit to this and you know right behind that are the needles he's putting in but uh you know it's a fine line between bonds like the skinny dude and then he just became his head just monster growing but i think about that all the time if i was barry bonds they always say barry bonds was a hall of famer without it i'm good but if you're like a prospect who like might
Starting point is 01:00:22 make the league and might make like a five million dollar contract or you'll flame out and play in like a mexican league and then disappear or work at wendy's right or yeah nothing at all like and then you get caught you get kicked out but you made like two million bucks even if it's just a couple million bucks it's like i don't i don't i don't think i could stop myself from that yeah and um i do think that there's something weird about as people have gotten to understand this stuff better there's obviously like crazy stuff whatever like you know what scares the hell out of me is uh psychedelics did you see the bodybuilder recently the 31 year old uh bodybuilder so there's a 31 year old kid who's like very popular online i'd never heard
Starting point is 01:01:02 of him before but you know he had big counts and stuff um he went to thailand and uh the report that initially came out as he drowned in a lake and then like some more details come out you never like a hundred percent no so this is all like what people are at least reporting um he like did some sort of video that was a little deranged there was reports that he was acting deranged then he like uh painted like hit the room he was staying in with like weird stuff like there's like a lot of like odd behavior yeah and then he supposedly died but he like people said they saw him walk into the lake or something and then was he on uh like toxicology report showed he was on a psychedelic or something i don't know if it's toxic toxicology or people are like he was on
Starting point is 01:01:45 like a psychedelic uh like like going there for the second i don't know all the details but just like i heard enough i like luigi but then i've also heard these these other stories of people who were like i was a an addict for like 20 years and i think both are true yeah but but what what always scares me is it's like it sounds like whatever headspace you're in is kind of you had a bad trip because you're like stressed and anxious and depressed and all that but it sounds like people use psychedelics to cure those things so like i would be worried that all of my bad things that i'm trying to fix would then manifest during i always think about if uh if you got a good thing going doing it can only derail you right but i guess if you got issues yeah if you
Starting point is 01:02:29 got issues then it's like well the only thing it could do is help you because you already feel like you're or i don't know or like you know you walk into a lake and dry yourself yeah i don't know there's a lot of veterans who uh that go and they say it helps with the ptsd and stuff like that so like it's why like it scares me because it almost feels like it's a little bit of a lottery yeah now i have a friend christian agermeyer who um is very involved in the psychedelic space he's got a public company all this stuff um and uh i think it if he was here he would say well the bad trips or whatever happen because people are like irresponsible yeah not taking no different But then like, you know, alcohol is fine, but if you, yeah, you can kill yourself if you drink too much, right?
Starting point is 01:03:10 But still, in fact, that's one of those things where I know I don't know enough, and so it scares me. Same way that like the Neuralink, a million people that, I always use that as like, I'd get interested. But is it, do you want Neuralink, and you're just afraid? Can you imagine? Yeah, see, I don't, I go back and forth too, because there are times I- I can't remember the bodybuilder's name. I'd know it right away. I'd be like, bam, right?
Starting point is 01:03:32 But also, does that like, is that a be careful what you wish for sort of thing? course you realize they can hack my brain shut me down no but not even let's say it all works as it's supposed to and it's like you know everything now it's like nobody likes to forget things but i don't know maybe part of i i'm trying to go the other way i want to get dumber i i think being ignorant is the best thing in the world ignorance is bliss baby these people who who i'm not saying ignorant in like a hateful or racist way but just like i think about everything i wake up and my brain is going and i'm like well what about this and what is this gonna happen to my kids and if i don't do this what about my job and i'm always thinking and maybe that's partially why
Starting point is 01:04:11 i have ambition and i've had some success but i'm also like wouldn't it be nice to just wake up and be like i don't know see what happens today no big deal so in um 2022 um a bunch of business stuff the whole market started tanking crypto stock i mean just everything and so if you were involved at all in like the finance world wasn't fun yeah wasn't fun and uh i remember driving the car one day and my wife sat next to me and uh i'm in the driver's seat and i look out the window and there was a guy who uh worked at a landscaping company and this is like kind of like one of these like uh four lane you know highways that are uh um and he is edging the uh grass next to the uh hell yeah next to like the uh curb and he's got like you know the orange long sleeve
Starting point is 01:05:04 shirt on he's got the pants got the boots and then he's got like the hat with the flap in the back he's got sunglasses on right he's fucking rocking and i was just looking at him and my wife goes you okay what are you doing and i just looked at this like i'm jealous of that guy's simple life all the time and he probably he could have had like the most stressful life ever his wife hates him and this and that like but in that moment i was like i don't know man i've had that exact thought about edging the lawn sounds pretty good right now when you see like a construction crew of guys and they're just kind of hanging and then you know they're digging or doing something but it's hard work the shit but also and we see that it's amazing and then they're like yeah try it in
Starting point is 01:05:41 february when it's you know 10 10 below when i gotta go outside well it's funny because i did just see a guy on instagram he's got a hard hat on he goes boys let me tell you let me tell you whatever you can do get one of them desk jobs and he's got sweat pouring down his face and And he puts his heart out. He's always greener. Trust me, get one of them desk jobs. I made it through high school. That was it.
Starting point is 01:06:03 Get one of them desk jobs, boys. All right, I'll see you later. That's the whole video. I want to do paperwork. Do you love what you do still? Yeah, of course. But it's just like I think that everyone has days where it's not even that they don't want to do what they're doing. They always have days of like, what if?
Starting point is 01:06:22 What if this other day, like for one day, I could go do something else? would i enjoy it would it be fun whatever and um the uh the taylor sheridan uh thing he talks about um he was like on a movie set and uh or he was on the what's the movie or the uh episodic tv series uh where they're all the bikers um new one or old one it's an older one sense of anarchy so he was like a not an a-list you know actor but he was on that show right and basically everyone else he i think was getting paid like 20k per episode he was getting paid 15 and his agent was telling them like you got to pay him 20 just like everybody else like we ain't got the money for that so like he's getting 15 or whatever so he pretty much was like why not and they were like dude we could fill
Starting point is 01:07:06 that role in five seconds you are replaceable there's 20 dudes waiting for that happy with 15 and shut up yeah so he's like oh so he basically i'm not doing it kind of at a point of pride and so that's when he was like well maybe i should go and become a writer and a producer and he's this like stratospheric the right choice taylor correct right so like it worked out really well for him but like it takes some balls to be like i'm on this path like you're in legit tv shows you're fucking fifteen thousand dollars an episode would take two days to record the episode right whatever right like you're not struggling for money yeah but to still say like this thing's good but i want great i love i also think that's a little bit like chicken or the egg it's like
Starting point is 01:07:47 i think the the vast majority of us would be like 15 grand for two days like i'm just gonna shut my mouth i might do that today but the guy willing to to buck the trend is also the type of guy who probably will become taylor sheridan you know what i mean so it's like a little bit in your dna if you're even considering telling the studio to fuck off maybe follow your gut because that's that means you're probably one of those guys i it's it's so hard to you know it's hard to do those things take a risk or you know start your own thing or whatever i think about it with barstool all the time like there's there's like there's like one but you know we've all done pretty well but it's like there's probably like maybe you can count on one hand total the amount of people that
Starting point is 01:08:28 if they were gone barstool would like cease to exist otherwise you are you are replaceable man like there's very few people in this world who are not replaceable whether it's a sports team or whatever you're doing don't don't get it twisted you're not that special you know what i just remembered i can't believe we're talking about this in when churn and make the initial investment 2018 no a little earlier uh 17 something like that probably 17 or 18 somewhere somewhere in that time frame yeah right yeah and um i remember when i read it it was something to the effect of churnin is buying like 51 at like a 15 million dollar valuation and i being a complete moron went on medium.com and i wrote this whole thing and i said barstool is going to be a billion
Starting point is 01:09:12 dollar company and i had like some legitimate math but i was like look this thing and i knew because i uh got to school in northeast like i knew the yeah the the cultural importance and the like fandom and all this stuff and i put a line at the end and i was like basically this is gonna happen as long as dave doesn't sell too early and i remember that you reached out to me or you had a radio show something happened and you guys were like there's some dumb ass on the internet who thinks this is gonna be a billion dollar company get that motherfucker in here what is this guy smoking right dave dave was you were dave was saying the same thing there was a infamous rundown me dan cats but did he really and dave and he said there are people in board
Starting point is 01:09:59 rooms right now saying how can we be more like barstool and we were like no the fuck there is and you have to remember at the time uh we had a blind intern named blind mike that dave was throwing things at him to try to prove whether he was blind or not there was a squirrel that consistently would eat through the wires so we had no internet uh you know and just like things like that where it was like normal normal joke normal things normal things like what are you and and i we were a little tongue-in-cheek obviously we were we believed in it because we were but i did not think it was ever going to be like this and dave kind of going back to what i just said he was smart enough to do this but also dumb enough or crazy enough to be like we
Starting point is 01:10:40 are the ones and and then it was a kind of self-fulfilling from there because barstool is and i'm not just saying this because i'm a part of it i'm so thrilled that i'm a part of it but it's the most interesting story like ever it is one of a kind it will never happen again it can't happen again the timing was perfect our our timing our ages if dave's born five years earlier five years later it doesn't happen if boston starts their dynasty five years earlier or after or they don't start the dynasty at all doesn't happen if the internet does not evolve and become a blog if we're just a newspaper it doesn't happen and those those just kept happening edm music becomes a thing right when we were getting into like college fair uh spring weekend type things and all of a
Starting point is 01:11:21 sudden we have a traveling techno festival and it was just like now i guess we also deserve credit Because we were so like light on our feet, we could pivot and move speed kills, you know? So we took advantage of those things, but they all fell in our lap, man. And even like me, like I had that job that allowed me to blog on the side, which allowed me to turn it into this. Cause had I needed to be like, quit your job and do it or don't, if it was shit or get off the pot, I probably at that point, I was like, I don't know, I'm making like 75 grand. That's amazing.
Starting point is 01:11:49 You know? So all of these things, timing for like individuals to the, to the big picture, it was lightning in a bottle. it was it'll just never happen again and uh but those are the stories where it's like certain people believed you know i think that um the number one thing that made barstool successful is that you guys understood everything is content everything content over everything man yeah you know light switch lou i i've seen the video of him telling dave about bitcoin for the first time and he's walking he sounds like a fucking insane man well he's right and he's got his laptop and
Starting point is 01:12:22 He's like, it's like you can't have Barstool without like Dave, right? But in a strange way, not as equally important, but pretty important are like the weirdo characters who maybe are way less talented, not to be mean, but or just don't have the exposure or the ethic or whatever. But we need that guy who's the blind kid to throw things. You know, it's like the cast of characters that we assembled. Luck, I don't know. Was it luck?
Starting point is 01:12:52 was it a talent like did he not have an eye for that or some sort of combination of all of it is this alchemy that like those circumstances i don't think will ever be represented but it's also like what was uh big cat had like that corner in uh in one of the offices of just like shit that was piling up there it was like when you describe it it's like it was just a corner of a room but he just he there was so much shit it became like a character the corner yeah yeah and then i remember i remember being in a rascal scooter but that became a thing yeah i just remember coming to the office and and then just being like don't go near the corner and be like Cause it's like, there's probably, there might be a small child in there for all we know.
Starting point is 01:13:26 Any other business would be like, Hey man, you got to move this stuff. Like we're trying to like, when people are coming to the office, right. And other people are like, no, no, no, no. Like protecting the corner. Right. And so that, that corner was probably more valuable than like 30% of the humans in the company. I said about Dave, Dave's dog is, is probably like the third most important employee at
Starting point is 01:13:47 the company. It's like Dan, Dave, and then his dog, his dog gets bigger brand deals. then like all the humans work in there or even like our cleaning company once stole from us and we got out the cctv we made a whole story of you know going through drawers stealing people's money and weed and stuff like that the the security guard her name's ebony she used to just do security for the building and i kind of struck up a friendship with her next thing you know we just hire her to be our personal security everything and anything can be turned into content at all times it's also like a probably a wildly unhealthy way to live like i think i'm totally
Starting point is 01:14:19 warped and fucked but it makes for unbelievable because when reality tv became like not really reality it was kind of getting scripted we were like no this is real and people would always accuse us oh this is a bit you scripted this it's like all this was real and so you are getting like actual anger fights scandals whatever great when everything else started to get scripted we we went even more the other direction so all right where can we send people to find you on the internet uh at kfc barstool is the main thing on instagram right now so i i wrapped up the podcasts in january so right now i'm just kind of doing short form videos on all social media so you're a fuck out fire the short form is an interesting one man because it's like i think
Starting point is 01:14:56 that that's the way everything's going the same way i thought kind of podcasts was next i think it's all short form video but people are in the in this podcast mode of how to sell podcast ads and long form and so monetizing it is is a little bit i think i'm like still at the frontier of that but i i think uh short form is the way so i've been putting all my eggs in that basket and it's yeah business has been pretty good i'm like 50 million views a month i'm pretty proud of that so jeez 50 million views per month yeah just from and i mean i literally it's just i've seen you do it that's it you know what i mean so uh that's a good thing so maybe you're an actor wait before we go i got one question for you uh this private private equity like explosion in sports a lot of people
Starting point is 01:15:36 are basically saying that like the celtics just traded jalen brown because of analytics and and private equity why are why if you're so smart and you're as a private equity firm to know about like making money don't you think there's enough knowledge to be like let's not completely bastardize this thing that we've just bought and ruin it and make private equity look so bad no because because it still just makes more money name the person name the person who did it you can't yeah there's no like personal culpability what's the what's the company yeah like i think about private equity i don't care if you attack private equity it's like uh Years ago, I used to say this saying, I used to say, long Bitcoin, short the bankers.
Starting point is 01:16:14 And I would have people who literally are bankers be like, yeah. And I'd be like, yeah. And they're like, I'm not a banker. Like, oh, yeah. I mean, like, I hang out here, but, you know, I'm like one of you guys, right? Everybody wants to be one of you guys. When can you, I wrote it in the book. Can you just say something or do something to make Bitcoin go back up?
Starting point is 01:16:33 Just do it. Pull the button. Pull the lever, push the button, say the thing. Make it happen. You want it to just do what it does. You know, it's like. No, I want it to go up. I want it to do what I want it to do, not what it wants it to do.
Starting point is 01:16:43 I know, I know. Is there any concern for you think it's fine? Because I started to hear how the derivatives that are being made off of Bitcoin are now kind of eating up the actual market. The volatility will definitely come down, right? Just because it's gotten bigger. But my general view is if you buy Bitcoin, you should do everything in your power to just say, I'm going to give this to my grandkids. Yeah, that's how I view it. You psychologically do that.
Starting point is 01:17:08 in a weird way um i wrote this thing one time and everyone thought i was fucking nuts i was like uh the boomers had housing the millennials have satoshi because what do boomers do they like bought now can you live in your house of course you can't live in your utility to the house but you like bought this thing and you basically just held it for like 20 years yeah so your mortgage is a 30-year mortgage we're talking about a decades-long plan so you should do the same and so they just held it and all of a sudden they're like that $200,000 house i bought is now a million and a half dollars what the fuck you can do anything for that yeah bitcoin i think is very similar right is even the last couple years i mean it goes up it goes down at whatever
Starting point is 01:17:46 but i do think the difference is like houses will always exist whereas like if bitcoin disappeared from the world we it wouldn't we could keep going you know true but i think that there's plenty of housing markets where that's not true have you seen actually this is a good video on this have bloomberg recently had an article out uh around dallas texas there was a massive surge of h1b uh immigrate uh immigration there because a bunch of companies were moving their headquarters to dallas texas well when that happens h1bs a lot of them come from uh india because they're software engineers or it or whatever right so like whatever your thoughts are on immigration just wait but if you have a bunch of people from a single geographic area with a certain ethnicity
Starting point is 01:18:36 certain cultural norms all this stuff the people where they're moving start to adapt to that because they're like well i need to sell homes if i'm a home builder so bloomberg has an article where they're talking to this home builder and long story short what's happened is now there's a bunch of changes to these programs a lot of uh these folks are not having to move home or they're not having as much money so they're not buying these houses whatever but the homes they got built had things like uh a specific area of the kitchen for like a spice kitchen or they had like a room that was like a prayer room yeah now they're trying to like reconfigure it to be like a study or like whatever right yeah and so i look at this and i'm like okay housing yes to a degree
Starting point is 01:19:15 is this great long-term term store of wealth but in dallas texas home prices exploded and the whole article is about they're coming back down and here's the drivers of it whatever so it's like a very well done article that's like looking at the economic impact and that's like the focus but you learn some of these nuances you're like well actually if you bought a home in dallas texas three years ago i don't know if it was that great so 10 years from now is it going to be great 20 years from now like probably but i don't know right right and so like there's always risk i think is the the short answer and so it's like to me a home bitcoin gold you know whatever it's just like dude just buy some shit hold it for long what do you what do you think is uh like are you
Starting point is 01:19:59 are you of the thought that it's going to go to a million like when people say that hey sure is that just because of scarcity because there's a fixed like what does the government's never gonna stop printing money and so you think that like it's like gold so like all the other currencies will be less appealing to prop this up to the point that it'll spike that high i i just think that uh scarcity becomes very valuable in a world of abundance and we have an abundance of dollars and we're headed to a world of even more dollars and then also an abundance of intelligence through ai and so like things that are scarce now i think that um professional sport team owners super fed there's only 32 teams right it's like that's interesting um i've seen people buying up
Starting point is 01:20:41 like collectibles like uh the guys who bought the um uh pokemon card from logan paul super interesting right a couple called treasure trove um if you go and you take a look at uh bitcoin right gold like things that have scarcity to them are going to continue to perform really well because you just have an abundance of these dollars and so everything's and there is no way to get around this idea that there's a fixed amount like don't because i always think wasn't there a time where like the government would have been like no there's no more gold to back these dollars and then they just like made up a new system where they could print it is there a way that like of course but like actually where you're now making new bitcoins and then the whole system
Starting point is 01:21:17 if i remember correctly over the last 25 years gold is outperforming the stock market so even though they took away the gold's like reliance to the dollar or the relationship there gold is more valuable today right when they when they took off the gold standard if i remember correctly i think it was at like 35 an ounce okay and now it crossed over 5 000 now it's come down a little bit but like insane right so it's just like if you you know look i i give boomers a lot of shit they give millennials a lot of shit so it's kind of you know this like love hate relationship whatever but like if you're just 50 years ago bought a house and bought gold and chilled like dude you're a genius yeah right yeah so like i'll leave you with this you know what uh investment
Starting point is 01:21:56 strategy i think is highly underrated and will be very valuable in the future hit me the crazy uncle portfolio okay when you go to thanksgiving dinner what does your crazy uncle talk about land guns bitcoin and gold those are the four buy them up baby government ain't gonna get my guns right i'm gonna get on my land right like but like those four things are probably gonna do incredibly well it's so funny to think about those guys also being in bitcoin being like it's my guns and also i got my little seed phrase to keep my bitcoin safe dude a hundred percent right so it's like my wallet that i put it in yeah so all right kfc barstool on instagram that's where we're gonna send people that's what's up appreciate it thank you bro
